The Dead's first attempt at sixteen-track recording, AOXOMOXOA was remixed at Alembic Studios in San Francisco in 1971 byoriginal engineers Bob Matthews and Betty Cantor. This is the mix used for the CD issue.

Named after one of famed San Francisco poster artist Rick Griffin's lysergic palindromes, the Grateful Dead's third album saw the band inject their acid-fueled sting into folk music of various ages. Hunter added a lyrical landscape perfect for the band's blend of exploration and tradition. Portraits of a rebellious mystic ("St. Stephen") and a dandy day-tripper ("Cosmic Charlie"), proper Olde English tales ("Dupree's Diamond Blues"), and hallucinatory excursions to the borders of Hunter's muse ("China Cat Sunflower," "Mountains Of The Moon") are remarkable in that their expansive overview is interwoven with precise detail.
The elongated strides of ANTHEM OF THE SUN were replaced with short bursts that hinted at the music's timeless sources. "St. Stephen" is a raw clarion call from Temple Mount. "Dupree's Diamond Blues" sounds like it fell out of the bluegrass tradition into a field of poppies. "Cosmic Charlie" is built on a "Revolution"-like riff, but with a far more subtle thrust and sweetly contrary harmonies. And "What's Become Of The Baby" is a nearly nine-minute excursion into weirdness that clearly mapped out one of the interstellar musical spaces the Grateful Dead had begun visiting.

In the late '60s, New Orleans' The Meters became one of the main purveyors of the gritty, urban funk that would come to dominate 1970's black music. After working together as a session band, guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist George Porter Jr., drummer Zigaboo Modeliste and keyboardist Art Neville began to release soulful, instrumental party records in the marketable mould of Booker T. and the MG's. But The Meters' catchy, wicked licks, fiery rhythmic interplay and general hard-hitting pulse gave birth to an utterly new, influential sound.
Though the band would go on to refine their sound on Reprise discs such as REJUVENATION and CABBAGE ALLEY, their earliest releases are no less compelling. THE VERY BEST OF compiles some of the band's most irresistible jams from 1968 to 1976, a period which saw the creation of such classics as "Cissy Strut," "Look-Ka Py Py," both included here. The primitive production only enhances the rhythmsection's in-the-pocket punch, and Art Neville's swirling organ. This is a funk blueprint--tight, rhythmic, straight-up good time music in the finest New Orleans tradition.

Surf's up when it comes to the music featured on the BLUE CRUSH soundtrack. Providing musicfor this film about female surfers succeeding against the stacked odds of a sexist society and really gnarly waves requires the aid of artists able to provide visceral and cerebral thrills. Which means Lenny Kravitz gets to pump screaming riffs into the fuzz-guitar-driven "If I Could Fall In Love," Blestenation makes like Outkast on their remake of Bananarama's "Cruel Summer," and N.E.R.D. keep the needle in the red with a pounding Jason Nevins remix of "Rock Star."
Taking the edge off all this aggression are Beenie Man's bubbly dancehall anthem "Party Hard," Nikka Costa's slinky funk workout "Everybody Got Their Something," and Beth Orton's swirling "Daybreaker." Other notable performances include Damian Marley reinterpreting one of his dad's classics into "And You Be Loved," Chicken pumping up the rock-steady grooves on "Big Love," and Doves getting deep with their head-music instrumental "Firesuite." This solid batch of songs quashes any fears of wiping out on the rocks of a bad soundtrack.

JUSTIFIED may represent Justin Timberlake's attempt to break out of theboy band mold and be taken seriously as a musician, but 'N Sync and more specifically ex-beau Britney Spears continue to serve as red flag reminders of these specific times. Ballads like "Never Again" and "Nothin' Else" bear the markings of classic break-up songs but far from licking his wounds throughout the rest of this debut, Timberlake includes a number of cuts that celebrate being single including the Timbaland-produced cut "Right For Me" and equally the thumpin' "Rock Your Body." Other names this teen idol nabbed in a quest for credibility are red-hot producers The Neptunes and P.Diddy.
In keeping an R&B element as the touchstone for this debut, Timberlake dishes out a number of surprisingly stellar songs including the very mellow, Stevie Wonder-flavored "Nothin' Else," Latin-soaked "Senorita" and infectious "Like I Love You." In delivering such a mature record, Justin Timberlake has created a springboard to bigger and better future projects.

With EDEN, Broadway diva Sarah Brightman ("Requiem," "Cats") stretches beyond the constraints of what's considered show music. Here, she sings an assortment of classical adaptations, rock, and sleek modern pop songs.
The entrancing opener, "In Paradisum" combines pre-recorded nature sounds, atmospheric textures, and echoes of Gregorian chant, setting the regal and eclectic mood. "Nella Fantasia" is an adaptation of a tune by movie soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone, with Italian lyrics by Ferrau, and here the exquisite longing in Brightman's voice transcends all language barriers. She transforms Kansas' philosophical hit "Dust in the Wind" into a theatrical ballad that transcends time or setting. The production is lavish, judiciously mixing lustrous, gently throbbing modern pop textures, and conventional orchestration in a way that showcases the songs and the singer without being obtrusive or maudlin.

"Black Holes," the first song on this CD, has it all. Incredibly swinging rhythm section, beautifully consructed tune with recurring piano-and-bass ostinato to build excitement, open ended fade out to make us want more. The rest of this recording rises to the occasion of meeting our already-established high expectations. Besides being a pianist with a beautiful touch, Rosnes is an excellent composer and leader. Although there is plenty of hard swinging, this is an album of multilayered emotionality. The titular ballad is a highlight, reflecting the bittersweet feeling that is part and parcel of the improvisational jazz experience. Rosnes also chooses to interpret the late Tony Williams' "Pee Wee" and it is good to hear a fresh approach to this mesmerizing classic, with Jack Dejohnette's unique take on the 3-D drum and cymbal improvisations and Rosnes's slightly more romantic harmonic vision.

FLOWERS IN THE DIRT is arguably McCartney's finest album of the '80s (and '90s, for that matter). A large part of the credit is due to Elvis Costello, who cowrote several of the album's tracks. Costello provided the necessary artistic contrast that had been missing in McCartney's compositional process ever since his parting with Lennon. It doesn't hurt either that McCartney's melodic bass figures are at the heart of many arrangements here, a crucial element lacking in much of his previous solo work.
The Costello collaborations are predictably the strongest offerings: the opening "My Brave Face" is a cheeky, upbeat post-breakup tune, and "You Want Her Too" is an infectious expression of romantic rivalry. McCartney's own tunes are none too shabby, though. The warm, sentimental "Put It There" and the rocking "Figure of Eight" are among the solo-composed standouts.

The Jerry Garcia Band's 1978 album, CATS UNDER THE STARS affords the opportunity to hear the original versions of Hunter/Garcia gems that would become staples of the Grateful Dead's live set (the story-song "Rubin and Cherise," the biblical narrative "Gomorrah"). It also hints at a seldom-considered aspect of the band's work from that period; "Palm Sunday" and "Down Home" suggest the strong influence of gospel music, with which Garcia was infatuated at the time. While some of the Dead's outings showed hints of this inspiration, these cuts make those leanings abundantly clear. These spiritually flavored tracks also provide the perfect foil for more polite, studio-spotless (though still effective) items, such as the title track, one of Garcia's glossier efforts.
The 2005 reissue of the Jerry Garcia Band's 1978 album, CATS UNDER THE STARS, is a revelatory thing. There's a wealth of previously unreleased bonus material here that points emphatically to the strong influence of gospel music. The never-before-revealed likes of "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" and "I'll Be with Thee" make those leanings abundantly clear. These soulful, organic tracks provide a substantial enhancement to the original record.

Skewed heavily towards older, predominant UK classic rock artists, this 2-CD set serves up quite a number of stellar performances starting with David Bowie's one-two punch intro of Simon & Garfunkel's "America" and his own "Heroes."Among the most pleasant surprises was an invigorated set by The Who featuring molten readings of "Who Are You," "Baba O'Reilly" and "Won't Get Fooled Again."
Other elder statesmen checking in were Elton John ("Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters"), Eric Clapton ("I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man") and Mick Jagger with Keith Richards ("Miss You," "Salt Of The Earth"). Few other guitarists are as deserving of the box-set treatment as Beck. 1991's BECKOLOGY is a three-disc set, exhaustively compiled to represent every era of Beck's long and winding career. The set also includes a 60-page booklet with a bio, classic pix, and aBeck band-member family tree.
Starting with one of Beck's very first bands, the Tridents, Disc One mainly focuses on his work with blues-rock groundbreakers the Yardbirds ("Train Kept-A-Rollin," "Happenings Ten Years Ago") and Beck's early solo work ("Hi Ho Silver Lining"). Disc Two contains tracks with a then-unknown singer named Rod Stewart ("Shapes of Things," "Jailhouse Rock") and selections from the short-lived Beck, Bogert, Appice trio ("Black Cat Moan"). The final disc focuses on Beck's mid-'70s instrumental era ("Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," "Freeway Jam") and on such mercurial '80s work as Beck/Stewart's hit cover of "People Get Ready." BECKOLOGY is a fitting retrospective of this guitar legend.
