Lennon Legend (The Very Best Of John Lennon)
Full title: Lennon Legend: The Very Best Of John Lennon. Personnel includes: John Lennon, Yoko Ono, The Plastic Ono Band, The Flux Fiddlers, The Harlem Community Choir. Producers: John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Phil Spector, Jack Douglas. Imagine a place where the personal, political, and emotional elements of John Lennon's music converge together seamlessly in one cohesive production. An assortment of his finest solo work, LENNON LEGEND: THE VERY BEST OF JOHN LENNON is of great interest to anyone who's ever been a fan of the Beatles, the Plastic Ono Band, Yoko Ono, or simply the genius himself. Ranging from a rendition of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" to the sounds of the PlasticOno Band and the Harlem Community Choir on "Happy Xmas" and the classic anti-war anthem "Give Peace A Chance," the recordings assembled here stand as a testament to one of rock's most complex and influential musical talents. If you believe that Lennon's greatest period of creativity came to an end with the Beatles, you owe yourself a listen to this album. SKU: 1001381

Gorgeous George
Personnel: Edwyn Collins (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums); Patrick Arbuthnot (pedal steel guitar); Martin Drover (flugelhorn); Sebastian Lewsley (ARP synthesizer); Claire Kenny, Dennis Bovell (bass); Paul Cook (drums, percussion); Vic Godard, Sean Read (background vocals). Recorded at New River, London, England. In Edwyn Collins' prior musical life, his group Orange Juice was an integral part of the Glaswegian pop revolution that rode the UK charts in the early '80s, but caused nary a murmur in the States. Over a decade later, Collins finally bends the ear of the American listening public with GORGEOUS GEORGE, a collection of pop that challenges and never panders. "A Girl Like You" will be remembered as the song that broke him in the colonies, thanks to its inclusion on the "Empire Records" soundtrack. With its heavy reverb, faux Motown beat and Collins' somber Iggy Pop-like vocals, "Girl" successfully melds these disparate elements of Detroit's musical legacy. Elsewhere, Collins displays a caustic wit, whether it's playfully swiping at '60s nostalgia ("The Campaign For Real Rock") or Guns'N' Roses("North Of Heaven"). While his supporting cast includes former punks like Paul Cook (Sex Pistols) and Vic Godard (Subway Sect), Collins' main musical love is classic R&B. The chugging beat, clean jazzy riffs and muted horn section of "If You Could Love Me" sound like The Style Council fronted by a YOUNG AMERICANS-era Bowie, while the Arp synthesizer used on "It's Right In Front Of You" is straight out of any early '70s Gamble and Huff song. Nostalgic but not retrogressive, GORGEOUS GEORGE is Edwyn Collins' pop passport to the the United States. SKU: 1003418

Masterplan, The
THE MASTERPLAN is a collection of Oasis B-sides of UK singles and EPs. Oasis: Noel Gallagher, Liam Gallagher, Bonehead, Alan White. Additional personnel: Paul Weller. Includes liner notes by Paul Du Noyer. After proving their staying power with 1997's BE HERE NOW, Oasis culls together b-sides and tracks which were previously available only as imports in the US on THE MASTERPLAN.This aptly titled collection fleshes out the legend, going back to older b-sides like "Fade Away" and "(It's Good) To Be Free" and newer flip-sides like "Stay Young." Opening with explosive live favorite "Acquiesce," THE MASTERPLAN will satiate the rabid completist but, with tracks as powerful as the slow-building anthem "Half the World Away," it's also sure to convert any newcomers. The ambitious (though, truth be told, not surprising) live cover choice of "I Am The Walrus" rounds out this energetic, often unexpected chapter in the story of this modern pop phenomenon. Nilsson Schmilsson [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Harry Nilsson (vocals); Peter Frampton, Gary Wright, Klaus Voorman, Caleb Quaye, Cris Spedding, Herbie Flowers, Jim Gordon, Jim Keltner. This is the album that brought about Harry Nilsson's commercial breakthrough in 1971. Produced by Richard Perry, it retains all of Nilsson's wonderful songwriting and warm singing, but presents them in a decidedly rock-based setting. As it turned out, the guy who represented a sort of Tin Pan Alley update could rock with the best of them! NILSSON SCHMILSSON received the contributions of a stellar cast of British and American studio regulars, and was recorded in London. From the opening notes of "Gotta Get Up," Nilsson is in complete control, fronting the proceedings with grace and ease. The album yielded a number of hits for him; "Coconut" (as in "put the lime in the coconut") and "Jump Into the Fire" were two, but his highest chart placement came with a song he didn't write, "Without You," a song penned by the English band Badfinger. The song seems like such a natural selection for Nilsson that it'soften assumed that Badfinger had covered Nilsson. This album ranks as one of his finest, along with HARRY and NILSSON SINGS NEWMAN. From The Cradle
Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Andy Fairweather-Low (guitar); Jerry Portnoy (harmonica); Tim Sanders (tenor saxophone); Simon Clarke (baritone saxophone); Roddy Lorimer (trumpet); Chris Stainton (keyboards); Dave Bronze (bass); Jim Keltner (drums); Richie Hayward (percussion). Recorded at Olympic Studios Barnes, London, England. FROM THE CRADLE won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. It was also nominated for Album Of The Year. Some 30 years after cutting BLUESBREAKERS with John Mayall, Slowhand is back--and he's plugged in, too. From the Elmore James-styled slide grunge that heralds Leroy Carr's classic "Blues Before Sunrise," to his sweet, pearly tones on an agonizingly slow "Third Degree," it's clear that FROM THE CRADLE really is your parents' Eric Clapton. Nearly every album Clapton's ever done has had a suggestion of his roots. But there's more than a suggestion of blues on impassioned, unhinged solos like "Five Long Years," "It Hurts Me Too" and "Someday After A While"--Clapton betrays a childlike pleasure in coming out from behind his pop persona, and the joy is infectious. That's because FROM THE CRADLE is recorded live...that is to say, everyone at once, with no instrumental or vocal overdubs (save for the sweetdobro obbligatos on an old-timey sounding "How Long Blues"). The slower tempos, like a lowdown "Sinner's Prayer" and the acoustic "Driftin'" really showcase his growth as a vocalist (particularly that bullfrog groan, by way of Muddy Waters, whom he honors with an especially faithful cover of "Standin' Round Crying"). And when Clapton leaves Earth orbit on Willie Dixon's "Groaning The Blues," you get the feeling Eric may never leave the blues again. More, please. SKU: 1005866

Dark Dear Heart
Personnel: Holly Cole (vocals); Mark Kelso (vocals, drums, tambourine); Steve Tavaglione (soprano saxophone); Jon Hassell (trumpet); Kevin Breit (autoharp, acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, bazouki, loops); Aaron Davis (piano, Wurlitzer piano, Fender Rhodes, Hammond B-3 organ); Jim Cox (Wurlitzer piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Larry Klein (organ); David Piltch (guitar, mandolin, bass); Dean Parks (guitar, 6 string bass); Greg Leisz (electric & pedal steel guitars); George Koller (bass); Iki Levy (drums, programming, loops); Helik Hadar (drums, programming); Alex Brown, Mona Lisa Young (background vocals). Recorded atMcClear Pathe Studios, Toronto, Canada; House of Blues, Encino, California; Worstword Ho!, Los Angeles, California. Song stylist Cole reaches into the catalogs of some of pop's finest composers on DARK DEAR HEART. The album opens with a technofied version of the Beatles classic "I've Just Seen A Face" that's deconstructed enough to make Paul turn over his grave (oops, he's not dead). There are two cuts from the criminally underrated Mary Margaret O'Hara (including the engrossing title tune) as well as the Joni Mitchell evergreen "River." The Joni connection runs a bit deeper, as DARK DEAR HEART was produced by Mitchell's ex-husband/producer/bass player Larry Klein, whose work here is a bit more straightforward and pop-oriented than his collaborations with his ex. Throughout, there are moments of jazzy acoustic introspection contrasted by state-of-the-art Adult Contempo-pop. SKU: 1003760

Long Distance Voyager
The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); Ray Thomas (vocals, flute, harmonica); John Lodge (bass, background vocals); Patrick Moraz (keyboards); Graeme Edge (drums). Additional personnel: The New World Philharmonic. LONG DISTANCE VOYAGER signaled the revitalization of the Moodies. After a six-year layoff, they'd regrouped for 1978's OCTAVE, which met with mixed reviews. Three years later, the updated sound of VOYAGER brought them back to the top of the charts. Ex-Yes keyboardist Patrick Moraz's synthesizers replace Mike Pinder's Mellotron, and there's a distinct early-'80s sheen to the upbeat hits "Gemini Dream," which chronicles the band's comeback efforts quite literally, and "The Voice." "Talking out of Turn" sounds like nothing so much as a more sophisticated Little River Band, but one cannot deny its gentle, bouncy appeal. Gentle, acousticballads like "In my World" and "Nervous," however, wouldn't sound out of place on ON THE THRESHOLD OF A DREAM. For the diehards, Ray Thomas (whose flute is conspicuously absent in much of this '80s-centric production) provides that essential element of quirky British theatricality with his closing, self-referential triptych of "Painted Smile," "Reflective Smile," and "Veteran Cosmic Rocker." The last of these offerings proves that the Moodies have more self-knowledge than their critics would like to believe. SKU: 1003608

Lovers Rock
Personnel: Sade Adu (vocals); Leroy Osbourne (vocals); Stuart Matthewman (guitar, woodwinds, programming); Andy Nice (cello); Andrew Hale (keyboards, programming); Janusz Podrazik (keyboards); Paul S. Denman (bass); Karl Vanden Bossche (percussion). Recorded between September 1999 & August 2000. LOVERS ROCK won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. Examining the career of former model/fashion design student Helen Folasade Adu, it's apparent that the span between studio albums increased exponentially. Eight years after LOVE DELUXE, the original members of Sade's band regrouped and here recapture the magic of the former ensemble. The vocals on LOVERS ROCK are unmistakably sensual and enchanting. Guitarist Stuart Matthewman steers clear of the crunchy electric sound that was his signature on LOVE DELUXE, the one exception being "Somebody Already Broke My Heart," which has some tasty understated percussive palm muting in the choruses. From an instrumental perspective, LOVERS ROCK leans a bit more to the electronic side, but technology doesn't dampen the atmosphere and simple beauty of the music. Not surprisingly, the focus continues to be the sweet, often mournful melodies of a unique pop vocalist. SKU: 1047020

Ol' Man Mud
Recorded between 1946 and 1948. This compilation represents an important period in Muddy Waters' career: the time between his earliest incarnation as a Delta bluesman and the full-band electric sound he established with Chess Records. The earliest cut here, a 1946 Columbia recording of "Mean Red Spider," is a curious combinationof rural and urban blues styles, with Waters' Robert Johnson influence rubbing shoulders with jazz sax and sophisticated piano work. A few more Columbia sides from that same year are included, more in line with Muddy's subsequent Chess work. The balance of this disc is a batch of tunes Waters recorded for Aristocrat (which would soon become Chess). Equal parts Johnson acolyte and Chicago modernist, the Aristocrat-era Muddy is wonder to hear. The Aristocrat sessions are anthologized completely and exclusively elsewhere, but their mating with the Columbia sessions on OL' MAN MUD presents a unique snapshot of this phase in Waters' work. Fever In Fever Out
Luscious Jackson: Jill Cunniff (vocals, guitar, bass); Gabrielle Glaser (vocals, guitar, drum programming); Vivian Trimble (vocals, piano, Hammond organ, Mellotron, keyboards); Kate Schellenbach (drums). Additional personnel includes: Daniel Lanois (slide guitar, mando-guitar, bass, percussion); Emmylou Harris, N'Dea Davenport (background vocals). Producers: Daniel Lanois, Tony Mangurian, Luscious Jackson. Recorded at Kate Schellenbach's house and Baby Monster Studios, New York, New York; Kingsway Studio, New Orleans, Louisiana. The four-woman band Luscious Jackson glides between rock, hip-hop, jazz, soul and funk with grace and enthusiasm, evoking a palpable mood of modern urban life. The voices of Jill Cunniff and Gabby Glaser are distantly pretty one minute and tough, up-front and plain the next. This time out, another possibility is added, with Emmylou Harris adding lovely harmonies to several songs. FEVER IN FEVER OUT was produced by that least urban of producers, Daniel Lanois, and his smooth, earthy style is as unmistakable as it is unexpected in this context. Lanois' style also points to a dazzlingly different direction for the band; his signature sounds surprisingly suitable written across smart, sexy Luscious Jackson lyrics like "I kiss the ground, run my fingers through the Earth/Yes, it feels so good to be alive." Dirty Mind
Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Lisa Coleman (vocals); "Dr." Matt Fink (synthesizer); Bobby Z (drums); Dez Dickerson, Andre Cymone. DIRTY MIND is the most focused and uncompromising of Prince's early albums. In 1980, the Purple one wasn't a superstar, he was an undeniably gifted weirdo, sort of a funk/R&B Todd Rundgren, composing, performing and producing everything himself. His singular vision combined a driving, spare R&B style driven by danceable drum machines, funk guitar and colorful synths, (a palpable new wave influence is alsoat work here) with a near-scandalous attitude towards sex. The unprecedently graphic lyrics of tunes like "Head" and "Sister" make rock & roll rebels of the past decades look like uptight puritans. Prince hadn't yet developed the panoramic production style that would define his greatest '80s album, but this leaner, more direct sound suits the visceral material well. SKU: 5048051
