Pet Sounds Live
Personnel: Brian Wilson (vocals, keyboards); Jeffrey Foskett (vocals, guitar); Scott Bennett (vocals, keyboards, vibraphone, percussion); Jim Hines (vocals, drums); Taylor Mills (vocals, percussion); Andy Paley (guitar, percussion); Paul Mertens (flute, alto flute, clarinet, harmonica). Wondermints: Probyn Gregory (vocals, guitar, trumpet, French horn, keyboards, tannarin); Nick Wallusko (vocals, guitar); Darian Sahanaja (vocals, keyboards, vibraphone). Recorded live at The Royal Festival Hall, London, England in January 2002. Includes liner notes by David Leaf. The Beach Boys' 1966 opus, PET SOUNDS, proved to be one of the most significant pop records of the 20th century, its influence growing exponentially with subsequent generations of musicians enamored of its sunny-but-sophisticated West Coast sound. More than 35 years later, after decades of fractious Beach Boys history, PET SOUNDS mastermind Brian Wilson performed the album in its entirety for a wildly appreciative audience, backed by a skilled and sympathetic group of younger musicians. Virtually no detail was overlooked in arranging this mighty masterpiece forthe concert stage. Intricate layers of horns, keyboards, percussion, and guitars are laced together with the utmost amount of craft and care. Naturally, Wilson's trademark vocal harmonies are in the foreground, their complex, elegant tapestries carrying the songs aloft with transcendent grace. Wilson's own voice is a tad rough around the edges, but that element just adds an endearingly human quality to these pristine musical landscapes. SKU: 1072325

Greatest Hits Vol.2
Personnel includes: Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond (vocals). Producers include: Phil Ramone, Barbra Streisand, Gary Klein, Charlie Calello, Bob Gaudio. For the Streisand completist, purchasing every album she's recorded is money well spent. If you want to cover just the more well-known material in her career, you can buy GREATEST HITS or the JUST FOR THE RECORD box set. But GREATEST HITS VOL 2 is in itself an excellent representation of her 70's material. Included is "Evergreen (Love Theme From A Star Is Born)," possibly Barbra's most endearing ballad. The song is worth the price of the CD alone. But every song on this disc is choice Streisand. The monumental "The Way We Were" is essential, while "Sweet Inspiration"/Where You Lead" is a good sampling of Barbra's live performance. Taking a break from ballads, "Stoney End" is a classic rock-oriented track. The standout on the record is definitely "You Don't Bring Me Flowers," a duet with Neil Diamond. After their respective solo versions were released, inventive radio DJ Gary Guthrie spliced both vocals together to create the smash hit version on this album. It's amazing how one artist can represent a period of time, and that's the case with this record as many of the landmark tunes here conjure "memories of the way we were". SKU: 1004939

Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Includes liner notes by Kevin Smith. Jay and Silent Bob, the two suburban street urchins you grew to love (or at least acknowledge) in such Kevin Smith films as CLERKS and DOGMA, are fully unleashed in the comedic free-for-allJAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK. The album's soundtrack perfectly suits the mood of the film in that it's both sufficiently irreverent and often downright silly. Musically, this disc is a mixed bag that moves from the skater-punk of Stroke 9's "Kick Some Ass" to the Ryan Adams-penned "Choked Up" and classic parking-lot ass-kickers like Steppenwolf's biker anthem "Born to be Wild" and Run-DMC's hip-hop call to arms "Tougher Than Leather." Along the way, a number of brief comedic interludes appear, as if to reassert the utter cluelessness of the less-than-dynamic duo. A light-hearted mood is suitably maintained throughout the album, giving a good indication of what you'll experience if you opt for the full cinematic attack of JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK. Willard Grant Conspiracy: James Apt, Paul Austin, David Michael Curry, Robert Fisher, Erich Groat, Sean O'Brien, Chris Brokaw, Edith Frost, George Howard, Dana Hollowell, Peter Linnane, MalcolmTravis, Walter Salas-Humara, Peter Weiss, Nick White, David Zox. Recorded at Zippah Studio, Brookline, Massachusetts. An interesting mix of jangly roots rock and country with '60s psychedelia; the dominant feel here is a sort of rueful melancholy. Front man Robert Fisher employs vaguely sepulchral, Nick Cave-ish vocals, and has a fondness for lyrics like "Everything's fallen to pieces, and nothing stays the same." Predominantly acoustic instrumentation adds to the gloom. There's a hint of Fisher's noise-rock roots in the album's two prominent curveballs. "Go Jimmy Go," is a bracing piece of pop punk which juxtaposes Lou Reed-style solo lines with Ramones-like rhythm guitar, and the concluding "The Visitor" is a fuzz-drenched drone that sounds like the Velvet Underground with their amps turned to 11. Up At The Lake
The follow up to2001's 'Wonderland', 'Up At The Lake' sees the Brit-rock indie stalwarts recollect after their three year side-project led hiatus. The Tim Burgess fronted band spent a year in the studio with engineer Ken Nelson. The results - although a progression from 'Wonderland' - hark back to the thoughtful, melodic indie anthems of 1990's 'Some Friendly'. SKU: 6558372

Breakdown
This is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Melissa Etheridge (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Greg Leisz (electric, lap steel & pedal steel guitars, mandolin); John Shanks (guitar, autoharp, dulcimer, marimba, bass, Theremin, loops, background vocals); Jon Brion (electric & baritone guitars); Patrick Warren (keyboards, vibraphone); Rami Jaffee (keyboards); Kenny Aronoff (marimba, drums, shaker, loops); Pino Palladino, Mark Browne (bass); Steve Ferrone (drums, percussion); Matt Chamberlain (drums, loops); Jim Keltner, Abe Laboriel Jr. (drums); Loopalicious, Gota Yashiki, Brian Macleod (loops). Engineers: Marc Desisto, Neal Avron, Greg Goldman. BREAKDOWN was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Angels Would Fall" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song. "Enough Of Me" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance. During the four years between BREAKDOWN and 1995's YOUR LITTLE SECRET, Melissa Etheridge concentrated on starting a family and continued staying on the sidelines as her record label got caught up in corporate restructuring. This extended down-time had a settling effect on the leather-lungedvocalist that resulted in her sixth release being the most sedate and introspective record to its point. Gone is the bar-band banshee whose fervor on songs like "Bring Me Some Water" could peel paint off the wall. Instead, the native Kansan kicks back, digs deep and writes about the intricacies of relationships, yearning and loss in a way that would make her hero Bruce Springsteen proud. Infidelity is sunken into a dream state throughout "Into the Dark," thanks to lots of shimmering guitar and disconnected background vocals that hint at Kate Bush. Unrequited love also gets a thorough reading as Etheridge masterfully piles on the religious imagery throughout "Angels Would Fall." Although BREAKDOWN's darkest moment comes out within the jagged "Scarecrow," a tribute to murdered gay teen Matthew Shepard, Etheridge offers up a ray of hope with "Truth of the Heart," a jangly message of optimism that reflects her newfound parenthood. Live At Newport 1959
The Kingston Trio: Dave Guard (vocals, guitar, banjo); Bob Shane (vocals, guitar); Nick Reynolds (guitar, bongos, congas). Additional personnel: David "Buck" Wheat (acoustic bass). Recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival, Newport, Rhode Island in 1959. Includes liner notes by Mary Katherine Aldin and Frank Werber. This is part of the Newport FolkFestival Classics series. Recorded at the very height of their success, this live set at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival is something of a rarity. The downtown hipsters who were the primary audience of the Newport Folk Fetival tended to look askance at acts like the Kingston Trio (or the Highwaymen or the Brothers Four, etc.), seeing them as commercially-minded sell-outs who would disturb the purity of the folk scene. Interestingly, the trio meets the audience halfway over the course of this 12-song set. Performing only one of their hit singles, the New England-specific "M.T.A."--that's right, not even any "Tom Dooley"--the group otherwise sticks entirely to folk standards. "Remember the Alamo" and "When the Saints Go Marching In" may not win many points for originality, but they're solidly performed sing-alongs. The highlight is their set closer, a spirited rendition of the calypso favorite "The Zombie Jamboree"--they are, after all, named after Jamaica's capital--that seems to go over like gangbusters. Even the hipsters were happy. SKU: 1002302

"Tell Him" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. LET'S TALK ABOUT LOVE was nominated for the1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album. "My Heart Will Go On" won the 1999 Grammy for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Song Written For A Motion Picture Or For Television. The Bee Gees, Luciano Pavarotti, Carole King and Barbra Streisand all in the same place. Is it the inauguration of a new branch of Planet Hollywood? Naw, it's just an album by a little Canadian gal named Celine Dion. True to form, on LET'S TALK ABOUT LOVE the key word is big. Songs, arrangements, production, performance, it's all in Cinemascope and Technicolor with Surround Sound to boot. The grand musical gesture is what Celine Dion has founded her career on, and in that regard she certainly doesn't disappoint on this collection of seamless, radio-friendly pop. Her voice is a miraculous instrument and she exploits its range and tone to their fullest on such tunes as "Immortality" (written by and performed with the aforementioned Brothers Gibb) and "The Reason" (with Carole King). Catskills
Combining dream-pop with hip-hop must be the best idea anyone's had since someone thought of sticking a little pink piece of rubber on the end of a No. 2 pencil. And nobody gets the idea better than our gal Valfer. Samples on top of beats on top of synths form hypnotic and addictive motives that'll just groove the shoes off your feet. Now put her gorgeous voice singing a catchy little counterpoint on top of that, and you've got one helluva sound. And itsounds terrific through a set of headphones. Extra-especially nice is the sample of a boys choir that pops up in a couple tunes. But the pick of the litter has got to be "My Head Falls Softly," an honest-to-God ballad with hardly any "beats." Boys' choir, some backwards bass, vinyl hiss and pop, and more combine to make a track that is both beautiful and unique. Oh yes, the woman has skills. SKU: 1048922

Archiva Vol.2
As many longtime Asia fans know, the prog-rock supergroup amassed quite a substantial amount of B-sides, outtakes, and demos over the years. While the1996 collection ARCHIVES collected many of these oddities, there were more songs left over, hence the appearance of ARCHIVA VOL. 2 the same year. While the majority of the tracks comprising VOL. 2 may not be as instantly rewarding as those on its predecessor, many prove to be quite enjoyable with repeated listens, such as the synth-based "Moon Under the Water," the laid-back "Don't Come to Me," the pop rocker "Obsession," and the sweeping "Armenia." Scorpion King, The [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. "I Stand Alone" (Godsmack) was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Hard Rock Performance. This album features a staggering 16 bands of the heavy rock/nu-metal persuasion assaulting the senses with eardrum-decimating aural aggression. Oh yeah, it also happens to be the soundtrack to the cutting-edge film THE SCORPION KING. Whether or not you see the movie, the accompanying disc definitely stands up on its own. Things get off to a bone-crushing start with the pounding riffs of Godsmack's "I Stand Alone." System of a Down's RATM-influenced "Streamline" delivers the requisite mix of melody and thrash. Ozzy Osbourne, one of the men who started all this, collaborates with disciple Rob Zombie on the gothic metal of "Iron Head." Rather than ending with some melodramatic elegy, THE SCORPION exits on an appropriately energetic note with the growling rage of Coal Chamber's "Glow," putting a properly spleen-venting cap on this unrelenting soundtrack. Bends, The
Radiohead: Thom Yorke (vocals, guitar, piano); Ed O'Brien (vocals, guitar); Jon Greenwood (guitar, recorder, piano, organ, synthesizer); Colin Greenwood (bass); Phil Selway (drums). Additional personnel: John Matthias (violin, viola); Caroline Lavelle (cello). Producers: John Leckie, Radiohead, Jim Warren, Nigel Godrich. Engineers include: John Leckie, Nigel Godrich, Chris Brown. Recorded at Rak, The Manor and Abbey Road, London, England. On only their secondouting Oxford's Radiohead fulfilled their huge potential, fashioning an album whose relentlessly downbeat tone was offset by an ability to formulate consistently winning melodies. The title track and "Just" throw some customary rock poses, but for the most part the band displayed a far more expansive approach. Thom Yorke emerged from the woodwork with a new-found vocal confidence, revealing a striking falsetto on two of the album's strongest tracks, "Fake Plastic Trees" and "High & Dry." The last three songs build inexorably to the stunning emotional climax of "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" with a control and poise that showcased the band's new maturity. SKU: 1000954

Reggae Greats
Don't let this fossil from the dawn of the CD era fool you. Though it weighs in at a lightweight 35 minutes, this volume of the Island label series REGGAE GREATS features the distinctive pop reggae rhythm of Toots' first major UK hit, "Reggae Got Soul" as well as the exuberant "Sweet and Dandy." The latter combines a gospel feel with lyrics that concern hangovers after a pre-wedding celebration. This song and the glorious, skittering "Pressure Drop" (which was covered by the Clash) were featured in the seminal Jamaican reggae movie THE HARDER THEY COME. Also includedhere are the later, less successful Toots efforts "Spiritual Healing" and "Peace Perfect Peace," recorded in the mid-'80s after he had parted company with Maytals Nathaniel "Jerry" Mathias and Henry "Raleigh" Gordon. The take of "54-46 Was My Number," though not without interest, is an earlier, inferior version of the '60s Maytals hit about Toots' stay in a Kingston jail for possession of marijuana. But the band's cover of John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads" ("Almost heaven, west Jamaica...") remains a delight and even decades later, there's still no denying the mighty rock-steady rhythm of the group's first international hit, "Monkey Man." Who Stole The I Walkman
Isotope 217: Jeff Parker (guitar); Rob Mazurek (cornet); Matt Lux (bass); John Herndon, Dan Bitney (percussion). Engineers: Casey Rice, Malachi Ritscher, Graeme Gibson. This thirdalbum by Chicago (please don't call them post-rock) experimentalists Isotope 217 fulfills and expands upon the promise of its predecessors. Though plagued with the "Tortoise offshoot" tag from the start, Isotope really establishes its own sound here. The debut album featured slightly tentative--but still forward-looking--BITCHES BREW-isms, the second a bit more electronic flavor. WHO STOLE THE I WALKMAN, however, is a fully realized, sui generis concoction of free jazz, avant garde weirdness, moody electronics, and completely non-retro jazz-rock flourishes. An effective balance between composition and improvisation, lyrical melody and free-wheeling freakout is achieved. If anything, the influence of trumpeter Rob Mazurek's avant-jazz Chicago Underground group plays more of a role here than Tortoise, but admirers of either outfit should be drawn to this recording. Keith Sweat
Personnel: Keith Sweat, Aaron Hall, Gerald Levert, Ronald Isley, Buddy Banks, Athena Cage (vocals); Tizone (rap, keyboard & drum programming); "Pretty Russ," `Lil Bud, Tamica Johnson (rap); Charlie Singleton (guitar); Allan "Grip" Smith (keyboards); Karl Heilbron (bass, drum programming); Zack Scott (bass); George "Spike" Neally III (percussion); William "Billy Bad" Ward, Fitzgerald Scott, Donald Parks (keyboard & drum programmming, background vocals); John Howcott, Eric McCaine, C-Love, Alphonso "Doc" Walker (keyboard & drum programming); Kut Klose, Daryl "Dezo" Adams, Bobby Crawford, Traci Hale, Ol Skul (background vocals). Producers include: Keith Sweat, Eric McCaine, William "Billy Bad" Ward, Fitzgerald Scott, H.O.P. Productions. Engineers: Karl Heilbron, Eric McCaine, Mike Alvord. Recorded at The Sweat Shop, Deep Sound Music, Southern Tracks, The H.O.P. House and Tree Studios, Atlanta, Georgia. There aren't many artists who are recognizable 10 seconds into a tune. But from the opening bars of "Twisted," the first cut on this disc, it's clear we'relistening to the one and only master of the vocal slow grind, Keith Sweat. Al Green he ain't, but Sweat's nasal, midrange voice has come to define modern hip-hop-inflected soul. And these 12 tunes are the Sweat formula, beginning to end: light, mid-tempo funk, with just enough of an edge to keep your head nodding to the beat. Throw in the usual opening layers of harmonizing backing vocals, a few incidental raps, and you've got the Sweat method down. There's some high-powered help on this record, as Gerald Levert and Ronald Isley lend their generous talents to the cause. The ladies always seem to be more affected by Mr. Sweat's approach than the guys--understandably so--so they're probably going to be the ones running to the checkout counter with this one. DIG
Personnel: Boz Scaggs (vocals, guitar); Danny Kortchmar (guitar, programming); Steve Lukather (guitar, pedal steel); Ray Parker Jr. (guitar); Martin Tillman (cello); Roy Hargrove Jr. (horns); Greg Phillinganes (piano); David Paich (keyboards, synthesizer); Michael Rodriguez (keyboards, programming); Nathan East (bass); Robin DiMaggio (drums); Joe Bonadio, Robin DiMaggio (percussion); Monet (background vocals). Engineers include: Jeff Sutcliffe, Peter, Dennenberg, Steve MacMillan. Recorded at ATS Studio, Los Angeles, California; Acme Studios, Mamaronceck, New York; Meac Studio, San Francisco, California. Boz Scaggs's first recorded effort of the new millennium finds the velvet-toned Texan employing a big-tent stylistic philosophy, dabbling with a rich mix of R&B, jazz, rock and hip-hop. Aided by a core support staff featuring long-time friends Danny Kortchmar and David Paich, Scaggs wastes no time applying his dulcet tones to smoky ballads like the slow jam "Desire" and the simmering "Thanks To You" (featuring restrained accompaniment by trumpeter Roy Hargrove). With its slowed-down drum loop and fat-sounding guitar-picking by Scaggs, "I Just Go" finds the San Francisco native applying a modern touch to his trademark sound. Boz fans the flames slightly with the mid-tempo shuffle "Call That Love," delivers "Call That Love" with Latin pop flair, and flows over the chugging electro-funk of "Get On The Natch." But longtime fans will be relieved to know that blue-eyed soul remains a favorite on this rich musical menu. Among the head chef's tastiest dishes are the dreamy "Sarah," with its slow-burn vibe, and the equally laid-back "Miss Riddle" featuring Hargrove injecting plenty of Miles-like flourishes. Yet another triumphfor a wily music vet. SKU: 1066879
