Princess Superstar Is
Personnel includes: Princess Superstar, The High & Mighty, Kool Keith, Mr. Len, Beth Orton, 7Even, Sinista, J Zone, Bahamadia. Producers: Curtis Curtis, Dj Mighty Mi, Dart, Concetta Kirschner, Lenny Lacem. Recorded at The Vertical Corporation, New York, New York. Princess Superstar represents the rise of a rap archetype so obvious in retrospect that it's hard to believe the role was never played before. There have been plenty of nice Jewish boys taking up the rap mantle over the years, from the Beastie Boys to Blood of Abraham and the more parodic M.O.T., and there have been a precious few white female rappers (most notably Peaches), but it took the arrival of Princess Superstar for the Jewish princess to fully enter the rap fray. Princess Superstar brings to her rhymes a swaggering sense of entitlement that extends to sex, finance, the music business, interpersonal relationships, and more. The pure bravado she displays instantly qualifies her entry intothe hip-hop game. In carnal terms, she's as nasty as any of the boys has ever been (Kool Keith also turns up as a willing participant in her bedroom games). Verbally, she can sling it with the best of them, delivering breakneck rhymes whose adroit wit finds her name-checking everyone from Kid 'n' Play to Mantronix and Daft Punk. All this verbal action takes place atop appropriately luxurious beats and production that gives equal time to the dancefloor and the lounge. SKU: 1067436

Spider-Man
Original score composed by Danny Elfman. "Hero" (Chad Kroger/Josey Scott) was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance By A Duo OrGroup With Vocal. Admittedly, one of the main revelations gleaned from the film SPIDER-MAN is the fact that Willem Defoe always DID sort of look like the Green Goblin. Beyond this realization, and whatever additional pleasure may be inherent in the film itself, the attendant soundtrack album is a tour de force through the world of heavy rock/nu-metal/pick-a-name circa 2002. Chad Kroeger kicks things off with a power ballad remiscent of the Staind hit "It's Been Awhile," but from there on most of SPIDER-MAN is filled with raging guitars, pounding drums, and primal-scream-therapy vocals courtesy of Alien Ant Farm, Injected, and many others. The few divergences from the melee include the Stooges-after-rehab sounds of The Strokes and the Hives, the sultry neo-soul of Macy Gray, and a hard-hitting take on the original Spider-Man cartoon theme (the template for which opens the disc) by Aerosmith. Keeper Of The Vine, The (The Best Of John Renbourn & Stefan Grossman)
Personnel: John Renbourn, Stefan Grossman (guitar). This collection highlights two of the world's best (if little-known outside of acoustic music circles) acoustic guitarists, Stefan Grossman and John Renbourn. Renbourn made a name for himself as a member of the great British folk group Pentangle, as well as a solo artist in the Brit trad-folk scene. Grossman, who studied with blues/gospel legend Reverend Gary Davis, has played with John Fahey and Paul Simon and has, since the mid-'60s, kept the rich legacy of acoustic guitar in blues, folk, and ragtime alive. Together, they explore the guitar as few can, picking with incredible technique and confident grace. This set collects recordings from 1977-1987, with the duo playing mostly originals, drawing equally upon jazz, blues, ragtime, and various styles and eras of folk music. One of the highlights here is their version of the Thelonious Monk standard "'Round About Midnight"--the two keep the tune close to the blues, yet give it a stately feel that makes it sound like it could've been composed centuries ago by a Medieval troubadour. Burn To Shine
Full performer name: Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals. The Innocent Criminals: Ben Harper (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Juan Nelson (bass); Dean Butterworth (drums); David Leach (percussion). By using a wide range of influences and styles, singer/songwriter Ben Harper manages to create a harmonious gem with BURN TO SHINE. Fans of Harper will not be thrown off by his dynamic versatility. In fact, new listeners will be drawn to the buffet of moods and emotions. "Steal My Kisses" is an up-tempo folk track that features a bit of human beat-boxing underneath. Harper's soft ballad voice shines bright on "Beloved One." Other tracks to check out are "Alone" and "The Woman in You," which both show off the tender side of Harper's songwriting. Ifyou looking to rock outright, check out the title cut and "Forgiven." SKU: 5084618

So Glad I Found You
SO GLAD I FOUND YOU consists primarily of previously unreleased tracks. They preferred alcohol to acid, tight arrangements to lengthy jams, and went to college while others dropped out. So what were they doing on the mid-'60s San Francisco rock scene? Named after a misheard lyric from Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone," the Mystery Trend paid infrequent visits to the studio, releasing only one single during two years together, but gained the respect of fellow Frisco ballroom bands such as the Great Society. This collection of all of Mystery Trend's known studio recordings and usable demo performances documents the brief history of one of the great lost bands of the '60s. The Trend's precision-arranged two-minute masterpieceswere mostly self-penned, the two exceptions being Smiley Lewis' "Shame, Shame, Shame (Miss Roxie)" and a quaint Americanized version of "Substitute"-where the band takes great pains to avoid Townshend's lyric about the subject's dad being black! "There it Happened Again" has an almost Bacharach-like middle eight; "House on the Hill" has sinister undertones lurking behind that whimsical facade. A little ragged on the harmonies, perhaps, but up there with the best of the '60s garage set. The only mystery about the Mystery Trend is why these nuggets weren't issued the first time around. My Way
Personnel: Usher, Monica, Lil' Kim (vocals); Jermaine Dupri, Manuel Seal (various instruments, background vocals); Greg Phillinganes (piano); Babyface (keyboards, bass, drum programming, background vocals); Nathan East (bass); Randy Walker (Midi programmer); Jagged Edge, Trey Lorenz, Trina Broussard, Shanice Wilson (background vocals). Producers: Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Jermaine Dupri, Sprauge "Doogie" Williams. Engineers include: Phi Tan, Rob Williams, Manny Marroquin. Recorded at Somewhere In College Park, College Park, Georgia; Sony Studios, New York, New York; Brandon's Way Recording, Los Angeles, Califonia; Future Recording Studios, Virginia Beach, Virginia. "You Make Me Wanna" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. "My Way" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Awardfor Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Three years after his debut album, 18 year-old Usher returns with a newly mature, seductively smooth voice, and a palpable sense of self confidence. What remains so appealing about Usher's soulful crooning and sexy whisper, however, is a youthful freshness and vibrancy. This unpretentious approach is felt throughout the album in the simple, clean production, especially on songs like the Babyface-produced ballad "Bedtime," which has lovely background vocals by Shanice Wilson. Funkier, more up-tempo songs include the title track, an R&B-tinged song endearingly lacking the slightest hint of humility: "from this day forth you know I'm all about heat/And what I do be the major league/That's why your girlfriend's paging me." Soul To Soul [Remastered]
This 1999 reissue contains three bonus tracks not on the original release. Personnel: Stevie Ray Vaughan (vocals, guitar); Joe Sublett (saxophone); Reese Wynans (keyboards); Tommy Shannon (bass); Chris Layton (drums). Producers: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Double Trouble, Richard Mullen. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded at Dallas Sound Labs, Dallas, Texas and Riverside Sound, Austin, Texas. Originally released on Epic (40036). Includes liner notes by Timothy White. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (SonyMusic Studios, New York, New York). 1985's SOUL TO SOUL was Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's third album and on it, they are joined by keyboardist Reese Wynans whose contributions gives it a funkier edge than its two predecessors. Vaughan was always respectful of his roots and this time out he chose to included covers of songs by Hank Ballard ("Look At Little Sister"), Earl King ("Come On [Part III]") and Willie Dixon ("You'll Be Mine"). Even on songs he'd written himself, the Texas guitar slinger can be heard channeling Albert King's high-bent, string-squeezing technique on "Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up On Love," while a Jimi Hendrix-like combo of squalling leads and wah-wah-soaked rhythm playing saturate the infectious title track. Wynans fattened up the trio's sound and his use of Hammond organ is a perfect compliment to the Grant Green-like touch Vaughan gave to Eddie Harris' "Gone Home." "Change It" takes on an insistent edge as Wynan's organ swirls around SRV's crunching riffs. The bonus tracks include a 1989 interview with Timothy White along with the Slim Harpo-flavored "Slip Slidin' Slim" and a monster medley of Hendrix's "Little Wing/Third Stone From The Sun." Extrapolation
Personnel: John McLaughlin (acoustic & electric guitars); John Surman (soprano & baritone saxophone); Brian Odges (acoustic bass); Tony Oxley (drums). EXTRAPOLATION was guitarist John McLaughlin's first recording as a leader. The reissue of this 1969 debut by the then- 26-year-old John McLaughlin is more than just a trip down memory lane. The music reflects experimental, free jazz trends that influenced jazz in the 1960s. But McLaughlin puts a unique virtuoso spin on this electric post-bop, delivering 10 original compositions that, while highly improvisational, still build on well conceived melodic motifs. The British quartet's interplay is especially memorable on "Arjen's Bag" and "This Is for Us to Share," the latter featuring McLaughlin on both electric and acoustic guitars. A rubato feel adds charm to this lovely yet convoluted ballad's clever harmonic structure. The album endswith "Peace Piece," a subtle solo acoustic guitar tune that hints at the Indian modal music that McLaughlin would later explore with his group Shakti. SKU: 1011286

In My Tribe
The song "Peace Train" is no longer on this release. Natalie Merchantis one of those writers with an uncanny ability to portray the minutiae of life with pinpoint accuracy and detached humour. The songs on In My Tribe cover the difficulty of getting up in the morning ('Like The Weather'), her sister's wedding ('My Sister Rose') and childhood holidays ('Verdi Cries'), as well as relationships, drinking, corporal punishment and soldiering. Merchant writes free-flowing prose songs and performs them impeccably, ably assisted by the other Maniacs and the production of Peter Asher. All slightly off-the-wall, but none the worse for that. Barbra - The Concert (Recorded Live At Madison Square Garden NYC)
Personnel includes: Barbra Streisand (vocals); Marvin Hamlisch (arranger); Brian Koonin (guitar); Ralph Morrison, Lisa Brooke (violin); Julien Barber, Maxine Roach (viola); Jeane LeBlanc, Mark Shuman (cello); John Beal (contrabass); Lawrence Feldman, Bob Keller (reeds); Lew Soloff, Darryl Shaw (trumpet); Peter Gordon, Jeffrey Scott (French horn); Jim Pugh, Robin Eubanks (trombone); Dave Taylor (bass trombone, tuba); Randy Waldman (piano, synthesizer); Neil Stubenhaus (electric bass); John Robinson (drums); Bill Hayes (percussion). "Ordinary Miracles" was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female; and BARBARA - THE CONCERT was nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York and The MGM Grand Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada in January and June 1994. Includes liner notes by Jay Landers and Dan Pine. Barbra Streisand's triumphant 1994 American tour marked the diva's return to her roots in Tin Pan Alley. Having abandoned the concert stage some 27 yearsbefore, Streisand spoke to her musical fans exclusively through the medium of recordings (and movies). But as THE CONCERT demonstrates, nothing quite equals the experience of Barbra Streisand emoting before a spellbound, enthusiastic audience. As this resounding performance before a hometown crowd at New York's Madison Square Garden makes clear, Barbra Streisand hasn't lost any of her vocal range or dramatic stature--it's as if she simply took a year off from singing and came back refreshed and energized. Streisand delviers the type of charged performances and humorous repartee that distinguished the works of a previous generation's grand dame...Judy Garland. Accompanied by composer Marvin Hamlisch, a full orchestra, and a host of audio-video gimmicks, Streisand suspends her star power just enough to allow her audience an intimate glance at her own growing pains, youthful aspirations, and mature triumphs spanning four decades. Songs like "People" and "Don't Rain On My Parade" are delivered with plenty of her characteristic brassy power and projection. She transforms the closing "Somewhere" of ("West Side Story" fame) from a plaintive dirge into a triumphant anthem of limitless possibilities--by sheer force of will. And yet, it's the quiter grace, and soft imagery of her performance on "Lazy Afternoon" that best conveys the commanding power and stately presence of this gifted, multi-dimensional song stylist. Out Of The Blue
Electric Light Orchestra: Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Mik Kaminski (violin); Hugh McDowell, Melvyn Gale (cello); Richard Tandy (keyboards); Kelly Groucett (bass); Bev Bevan (drums, percussion). 1977 is remembered as both the year of punk and the year of disco. At the time, though, it was the year of Fleetwood Mac's RUMOURS and Electric Light Orchestra's OUT OF THE BLUE, two albums that were simply inescapable. But where overexposure made RUMOURS feel somewhat stale and dated, OUT OF THE BLUE sounds as fresh now as it did at the time. This is due in large part to the obsessive insularity of Jeff Lynne's aesthetic. He seems not to be ignoringmusical trends, but to be simply unaware of them. Lynne's mid-period Beatles fixation combines with his love of lush orchestrations and pristine production to create some of his strongest music, including the enormous hits "Turn to Stone," "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and "Mr. Blue Sky." However, the autobiographical "Birmingham Blues" suggests that Lynne was tiring of the rock-star grind, which might explain ELO's lowered profile after this release. SKU: 1004838

Essential Porter Wagoner, The
Personnel includes: Porter Wagoner, Merle Haggard. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of RCA Nashville's Essentials series. True to its title, this is an excellent, comprehensive introduction to the work of this important country music figure. The disc opens with a humble take on "A Satisfied Mind" that shows Wagoner's roots in bluegrass and gospel. In shortorder, though, we're treated to the rollicking, honky-tonk side of Wagoner, as he revels in the joys of drink as heartache antidote on "Eat, Drink and be Merry (for Tomorrow You'll Cry)" and I'll Go Down Swinging." Throughout much of his early career, Wagoner was heavily influenced by Hank Williams, but by the mid-to-late 1960s, he came fully into his own as a musical storyteller. The grim murder ballad "The Cold Hard Facts of Life," one of his finest moments, still sounds just as stirring and unsettling decades later, and the complex narrative of "Carroll County Incident" is in a class with Tom T. Hall. Even in the '70s, Wagoner was mixing downhome sentiments with baleful moodiness, as on the disc-closer "I Haven't Learned a Thing," which brings things full circle. SKU: 1016954

Afterswish 1984-1991
Contains tracks from Ozric Tentacles' first five cassette-only release: ERPSONGS, TANTRIC OBSTACLES, THERE IS NOTHING, SLIDING GLIDING WORLDS, and THE BITS BETWEEN THE BITS. Named after a fictitious breakfast cereal, the Ozrics (as they are fondly known) single-handedly resuscitated the old '70s chestnut known as space rock (think Gong, Steve Hillage, Hawkwind, Guru Guru, Eloy), and by breathing life into the withered vessel, called it their own. One of the best ways to get an initial Ozrics rush is via this double-CD compilation, lifted from a series of early, gig-only cassettes. Start with the opening salvo, "Guzzard," which spins wildy upon its ionized guitar axis, shot through with cyclonic gusts of electronics, retro-rocket drum rhythms, and bass from space. Then segue into "Chinatype," a track recorded exclusively for this set, whereupon the frothy patina of bells and chimes ring and dance in a no-man's-land of breezy synths and percussive haikus. Skip ahead (if you're up to it) to "Velmwend," as a slowly percolating sequencer builds into a cacophonous yet beautiful burst of psychedelic splendor. You've now gained a foothold into the Ozric Tentacles universe. AFTERSWISH is an ideal primer for the uninitiated and a solid representation of the band's humble beginnings. Let your mindroam free here. SKU: 4125312

Dead Letters
'Dead Letters' is the fifth album by the Finnish hard-rock/nu-metal act The Rasmus but the first to break through to the UK. Critics have compared their sound to fellow Finnish act, HIM. However, whilst both acts have deep vocals and 80's new romantic influences; The Rasmus draw on a much more electronic vibe anddisplay Europop influences. This is evident on their breakthrough single, 'In The Shadows'. SKU: 6556253
