This album marks the end of era, as it's the last collaboration between Thompson and producer Joe Boyd, perhaps the only man who played as large a part in defining British folk-rock as Thompson himself. It finds Thompson in fine form, featuring his characteristic compositional mixof the acidic and the elegant. "When the Spell is Broken" and "She Twists the Knife Again" are the kind of harrowing love-gone-wrong tales that Thompson weaves like no one else. "Love in a Faithless Country" is among Thompson's more musically ambitious pieces, dipping into the 20th Century classical bag of ostensibly discordant harmonies. Throughout, Thompson is ably backed by old Fairport Convention buddies Dave Mattacks and Simon Nicol, among others.

MODUS boasts breakbeats with jazz sources and hip-hop structures, and a futurist vision that seeks to leap into the next millennium of rhythm while acknowledging the last twenty years. The best tracks on MODUS OPERANDI follow the trail of a piano trio through Kraftwerk's computer-game melodies, fusion-jazz grooves, and hip-hop's beat orchestration, with each influence taking the lead at various points.
"Hidden Camera" is guided by a skittering drum loop that is the sturdy middle in a conversation between synthetic wind washes and electric piano chords, with a bass propping the whole contraption up. "KJZ" is a percussive and rhythmic explosion. The title-track is an almost Mo' Wax-ian hip-hop affair with a mid-temporim-shot groove laid behind a soul-jazz keyboard composition. Transferred to the dance-floor, these tracks could be underground jams of the year. MODUS OPERANDI's ace-in-the-hole is its ability to cross over to the living room.

Since 1993's BLACK RIDER album consisted of music written by Waits and William Burroughs to accompany a Robert Wilson play, hard-liners consider '92's BONE MACHINE to be the last "official" Waits album before the seven-year wait that ended with the release of MULE VARIATIONS. Unsurprisingly, Waits lives up to the expectations engendered by that lengthy wait. In fact, there are more stylistic threads connecting MULE VARIATIONS to BONE MACHINE than to BLACK RIDER.
The chugging rock drive of the opener "Big in Japan" (featuring Primus) recalls "Goin' Out West." "What's He Building?" is a wonderfully devilish spoken word piece a la Ken Nordine (one of Waits' heroes) much akin to BONE MACHINE's "The Ocean Doesn't Want Me Today." Waits also continues BONE MACHINE's exploration/deconstruction of traditional blues and gospel, making for some of MULE VARIATIONS strongesttracks (the bluesy "Get Behind the Mule" and "Chocolate Jesus"). Ultimately, with a few exceptions, this is Waits' most low-key, ballad-heavy album in some time, and he's at his simplest and most affecting on tunes like "Take It With Me," which represent an unprecedented level of emotional nakedness in his writing.

An album that revels in an embarrassment of influences which the band bind, making their own. This was the Fairport that ranwith the psychedelic underground, flexing their muscles, a slumbering entity about to wake. This was their beatnik phase, producing such evergreens as Sandy Denny's beautiful 'Fotheringay', the first tangible examples of electrified trad in 'Nottamun Town' and 'She Moves Through The Fair' - neither song, incidentally, British. More significantly, Richard Thompson began to move in his own mysterious way, gifting 'Meet On The Ledge' which has since become their signature. Who would think to put the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Upsetters, obscure electronica artist MMM, and Nina Simone (singing her gospel breakdown cover of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord," no less) on the same mix CD Death in Vegas, that's who. Associated, musically speaking, with the likes of the Chemical Brothers and Jon Carter, Death in Vegas (a.k.a. Richard Fearless) is usually a DJ big on ambient collage and clubby beats. Here, however, he weighs in on DMC's BACK TO MINE series (compilations featuring personal mix selections by key artists) with a very eclectic and satisfying sequence.
There are some wonderful surprises here, including the spare, emotive folk of Songs: Ohia, the post-punk grooveof Au Pairs, a delicious turn from Italian film composer Piero Piccioni on "Psychedelic Mood," and Bo Diddley's exuberant, funky "Elephant Man." This is what a mix disc should be--a string of excellent songs that balance the familiar and the arcane, surprising in their juxtaposition but unified somehow in tone and sensibility. This is one of the best, and most consistently appealing, discs in the BACK TO MINE series.

Those eclectic ambassadors of Irish music are at it again, this time taking their act to Nashville for sessions with some of country music's most popular artists. On the one hand, you'd think that the most famous Irish folk group in the world would spend more time simply playing Irish music instead of guesting with artists from and dipping into seemingly every other conceivable genre. On the other, when you've recorded as much amazing Irish traditional music as exists in these guys' back catalog, you've pretty much got carte blanche to do whatever the hell youwant.
Anyway, Irish music played a major role in the coalescing of early country music, so DOWN THE OLD PLANK ROAD turns out to house a pretty good musical fit. Still, there are plenty of musical surprises afoot. It might not be a revelation to hear Lyle Lovett singing a traditional tune like "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down," but to hear it with added Celtic flavoring is quite an ear-turner. The lads work similar magic with everyone from Gillian Welch to venerable bluegrass patriarch Del McCoury, showing that this is one Irish outfit that refuses to be pinned down to a predictable sound.

Like his screen-writing brethren Cameron Crowe, Quentin Tarantino, and David Chase, filmaker Wes Anderson uses music as an integral part of his work. For THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS soundtrack, Anderson re-teams with Devo founder Mark Mothersbaugh for a mix of original instrumentals and semi-obscure cuts reminiscent of the duo's prior collaboration on the music for RUSHMORE.
For this bittersweet black comedy centered on the dysfunctional relationship between the children and parents of the Tenenbaum brood, some of rock's moodiest performers were tapped.
The soundtrack is bookended by a pair of Jackson Browne covers given a characteristically Teutonic reading by Nico ("These Days," "The Fairest Of The Seasons"). In between, Anderson throws in material by Elliot Smith (a jittery "Needle in the Hay"), Nick Drake (the gloomy "Fly"), and the Velvet Underground (the sparkling "Stephanie Says"). Other artists setting the mood are The Ramones with their chugging "Judy Is A Punk," Emmitt Rhodes (pop nugget "Lullaby"), and The Clash (their rock steady cover of Junior Murvin's "Police & Thieves"). Mothersbaugh's original score also impresses whether he's dabbling with raga on "Pagoda's Theme" or mixing reggae andbaroque classical music within the bars of "Lindbergh Place Hotel Suite".

EARTHLING is a strange album title coming from a man who's made a career out of ruminating on rock and rollers from Mars and other faraway places. But after all this time, it makes sense. Bowie's 1970s experiments in dance music, art-rock and other space-age pop forms helped lay the groundwork for modern styles like ambient and techno, and now he comes across as an astronaut inspired by what he's found and looking for a way to bring it all back home. If his most daring '70s albums were a conscious separation from rock and roll, then EARTHLING, for all its jungle beats, ambient noises and industrial dynamics, is a kind of return, an attempt to incorporate all he's learned into the music he started with.
EARTHLING sounds like no other rock album. The beats, which combine live drumming with loops, have thefast, herky-jerky drive of the techno style known as drum-and-bass; the guitars are an explosive mix of live action and samples; there's an occasional dub-reggae synth line; and Bowie's voice doesn't always come clearly through the clanging music. The disjointed arrangements alternately recall danceable rock bands like Big Audio Dynamite and rocking dance artists like Moby. But it's rock nonetheless, with strong, melodic verse-chorus-verse songs like "Little Wonder" and "Dead Man Walking" that use these sounds the way Nirvana used metal and Madonna used house music--as slaves in the service of the gods of pop.

Suzuki croons through one of Can's most luscious melodieson "Tango Whiskeyman," another glistening Karoli workout that also showcases the matchless rhythmic duo of Holger Czukay (bass) and Jaki Liebezeit (drums). Mooney delivers a memorable mood swing with the gut-wrenching funk of "Soul Desert" and "She Brings the Rain," a coffeehouse-quiet charmer. But it is "Mother Sky," the incomparable, 14:30 acid rock colossus with the swaying, trance-inducing Suzuki mumble, Karoli fireworks, seething Schmidt psychedelics, and brain-bending Czukay/Liebezeit groove, that is SOUNTRACKS' towering achievement.

The music of Solex couldn't have originated anywhere else but in the basement of a secondhand record shop, what with its mish-mash of musical styles, sounds, and samples from the farthest reaches of time and musical space. PICK UP seems to follow no discernible pattern as it creates a musical pastiche of various beats, bleats, and instrumental colorings that range from everythingfrom a calliope to power tools.
Elisabeth Esselink did indeed get the spark for Solex by experimenting with an 8-track machine in the bowels of her Dutch store. Furthermore, her music exhibits the sheer energy and joy of a music fanatic running up and back down the creaky stairs with every obscure record she could find to drop into the mix, along with a few better-known LPs, say Sugarcubes, Kurt Weill, and Jacques Brel. To sweeten the deal, Esselink layers on her own urgent and imploring vocals, pealing out abstract stories that form a seamless pastiche of their own.

Though it predates the the group's breakthrough 1972 hit "All the Young Dudes" by a year, Mott the Hoople's BRAIN CAPERS is easily the band's best and most consistent album. Mott's first two records, MOTT THE HOOPLE and WILDLIFE, were uneven affairs that found the quintet scrambling to find a signature sound, but BRAIN CAPERS has a confidence and vitality missing from those. Producer Guy Stevens gives the album a multilayered hard-pop sound akin to contemporaneous efforts bythe Pretty Things, and singer-pianist Ian Hunter's songwriting has grown exponentially. Any album that opens and closes with songs titled "Death May Be Your Santa Claus" and "The Wheel of the Quivering Meat Conception" requires attention, and the band's usual oddball covers--Dion's anti-drug anthem "Your Own Backyard" and a harrowing version of the Youngbloods' "Darkness Darkness"--sound more integrated than before. BRAIN CAPERS is a lost hard-rock classic.

Keyboard wizard Lonnie Liston Smith has worn many stylistic hats throughout his career (though his trademark turban has seldom left his head), starting out as a prime exponent of straight-ahead jazz piano before moving into more commercial waters. Those enamored of jazz fusion, R&B, and funk will be well served by the two-disc anthology EXPLORATIONS, as it draws from the late-'70s/early-'80s period that found Smith incorporating all of those styles into a very distinctive amalgam. Sweet soul vocals, funky bass lines, and elegant sax solos abound, but the focus throughout the four albums drawn on for EXPLORATIONS remains on Smith's scintillating keyboard work. It will come as no surprise to admirers of his early work to note thathe's an ace on the 88's, but Smith's dewy electric piano and crisp, percussive clavinet runs are equally impressive, embodying a certain '70s paradigm so completely that EXPLORATIONS feels like a time capsule intended to offer some grace and beauty to a less florid century.
