Live [ECD] [Remastered]
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. AC/DC: Brian Johnson (vocals); Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Cliff Williams (bass); Chris Slade (drums). Recorded live during AC/DC's world tour in 1990-91. Originally released on Atco (92215). The 2003 edition of AC/DC LIVE includes liner notes by Don Kaye. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Up until 1992, AC/DC's only official live album was 1978's IF YOU WANT BLOOD...YOU'VE GOT IT, which featured the late Bon Scott on vocals. LIVE marked the first appearance of lead singer Brian Johnson on an in-concert collection. The album was recorded during the lengthy tour that supported the band's hit RAZOR'S EDGE release. More recent singles like "Thunderstruck," "Money Talks," and "Heatseeker" are featured, as well as four tracks from the band's classic BACK IN BLACK album--the title track, "You Shook Me All Night Long," "Hell's Bells," and "Shoot to Thrill." What makes LIVE interesting are the Bon Scott-era songs that Johnson handles exceptionally well--"The Jack," "Dirty Deeds," "Whole Lotta Rosie," "Highway to Hell," and "TNT." Add to it a couple of other '80s nuggets, "Who Made Who" and"For Those About to Rock," and you have an excellent, straight-to-the-point document of one of the greatest live bands ever. SKU: 1080642

Nativity In Black Vol.2 (A Tribute To Black Sabbath)
Full title: Nativity In Black II: A Tribute to Black Sabbath. Includes liner notes by Phil Alexander. As they're the undisputed godfathers of hard rock and metal, it's fitting that the tradition of paying homage to Black Sabbath continues with NATIVITY IN BLACK II. Here, a lineup of cutting-edge metal bands again interprets material from Sabbath's Ozzy-era catalog. Godsmack slams through a faithful rendition of "Sweet Leaf," adding James Hetfield (of Metallica)-influenced vocals, while on "Hole In the Sky," Machine Head rocks it harder than the original, brewing the intensity to soaring levels at the song's close. The first surprise in the set comes in the form of a techno-metal version of "Behind the Wall of Sleep" by Static-X.Rightfully making a return appearance to the NATIVITY IN BLACK series, Megadeth displays its signature technical prowess on "Never Say Die." Newcomers System Of A Down offer a decidedly original Mr. Bungle-influenced interpretation of "Snowblind." Returning for a gratuitous guest spot with Primus, Ozzy shows his metal offspring how it's done on "Nativity in Black," sounding both youthful and commanding. Finally, after missing the cut for the first NIB collection, Texas metal outfit Pantera gets to join the Sabbath celebration on "Electric Funeral." SKU: 1033485

Good News From The Next World [Remastered]
This is a limited edition of 5,000 copies, packaged in a "miniature" replica of the original vinyl LP's sleeve. Simple Minds: Jim Kerr (vocals); Charlie Burchill (guitar, keyboards). Additional personnel: Mark Browne, Malcolm Foster, Marcus Miller, Lance Morrison (bass); Mark Schulman, Tal Bergman, Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Stefani Spruill, Pat Hodges, Maxann Lewis, Julia Waters (background vocals). Recorded at Bonnie Wee Studios, Scotland; Windmill Lane, Dublin, Ireland; Conway, Westlake and Track Records, Los Angeles, California. Although Simple Mindspretty much dropped off US pop radar after 1985's hit ONCE UPON THE TIME, the band, effectively reduced to the duo of singer Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill plus session musicians, continued their success in the UK. The Scottish group was still popular enough there to be skewered in a scene in Nick Hornby's pop-geeks-in-love novel HIGH FIDELITY. 1995's GOOD NEWS FROM THE NEXT WORLD, the second album by the Kerr-Burchill duo, continues its predecessor's trend towards adult, reflective, mildly anthemic pop. It's less experimental and immediate than '80s classics such as NEW GOLD DREAM or SPARKLE IN THE RAIN, but less bombastic and pretentious than later records such as ONCE UPON A TIME and STREET FIGHTING YEARS. A sense of wistfulness pervades these eight spacious, uncluttered tracks, though there's plenty of joy to be had in songs such as "And the Band Played On." SKU: 1079079

14:59
Sugar Ray: Mark McGrath (vocals); Rodney Sheppard (guitar); Murphy Karges (bass); Stanton Frazier (drums); DJ Homicide (turntables). Additional personnel: KRS-One (rap vocals); David Kahne (programming). Engineers: David Kahne, John Travis, Steve Gallagher. After scoring big with their previous effort, FLOORED, Sugar Ray returns with their infectious blend of funky grooves, modern rock and hip-hop. The group manages to meld all of these styles into an excellently produced, exciting record. Opening with the deceptive, Sepultura style "New Direction," Sugar Ray glides into a mellower mode with the album's first single "Every Morning," a comfortable pop ditty. "Live And Direct" has a reggae feel and features veteran rapper KRS-One. "Someday" is a straight-ahead pop tune, with some drum loops and scratches thrown in. "Ode To The Lonely Hearted" combines smooth harmonies with catchy hooks. "Even Though" rocks harder, but still remains a slick, short and sweet pop tune. "Abracadabra" isa cover of Steve Miller's smash hit, with some extra keyboards and programming added. Sugar Ray is a rock band that fuses other elements into their sound for wider appeal. They don't pretend to be master MC's or turntable wizards, and 14:59 is a good party record from a band that doesn't take itself too seriously. SKU: 1006281

Universal Mother
Personnel: Sinead O'Connor (vocals, piano); Marco Pirroni, Ivan Gilliland (guitar); John O'Kane (cello); Irish Chamber Orchestra (strings); Phil Coulter (piano); Dave Clayton (keyboards, programming); John Reynolds (keyboards, bass, drums, programming); Matthew Seligman, Nicky Scott, Claire Kenny (bass); Tim Simenon (programming); Voice Squad (background vocals); Germaine Greer, Jake Reynolds. Producers: Sinead O'Connor, John Reynolds, Tim Simenon, Phil Coulter, Jake Reynolds. Sinead O'Connor has transcended much of the pain and anger of her public persona with this moody, evocative set of songs. Touching upon themes of fraternity and maternity with folkish grace and childlike metaphors, O'Connor's UNIVERSAL MOTHER reveals aspects of her longings and fears in cryptic freeze frames of song and sorcery that are haunting in their simplicity, and unsettling in their focus on doomed innocents. Consecrated to the world's mothers and children, and dedicated "as a prayer from Ireland," UNIVERSAL MOTHER opens with an invocation from Germaine Greer, and the ominous overture "Fire In Babylon." With its menacing bassline and swirling mix of jazz samples and keyboards, it echoes Peter Gabriel, P.I.L. and Robert Fripp with its portents of dissolution and doom ("Life's backwards/People turn it around/The house is burned...The children are gone.").The penultimate "Famine" acts as a psychic bookend. Following a wolf's cry and an echo of "Fiddler On The Roof," the arrangement lurches forward with a hip hop collage of Miles Davis and the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby," as O'Connor's narrative essays the destruction of Irish culture and history. In between, O'Connor's intimate confessionals are framed in folkish piano accompaniments, with spare brushstrokes of strings. From the tender "My Darling Child," to a poignant cover of Kurt Cobain's "All Apologies," O'Connor's dark chamber music focuses on the joys and heartaches of childhood, scary tales of abuse, alientation from her family, and other painful rites of passage. UNIVERSAL MOTHER is an enigmatic, deeply personal portrait of the artist in flux--a triumph of compassion over rage. SKU: 1000924

Greatest Hits
This reissue includes new deluxe packaging with original release liner notes, photos, and artwork. Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, harmonica, piano); Joe Perry (guitar, background vocals); Brad Whitford (guitar); Tom Hamilton (bass); Joey Kramer (drums, percussion). Producers include: Aerosmith, Adrian Barber, Jack Douglas,Ray Colcord, George Martin. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Originally decried by critics as an American rip-off of the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith blew these criticisms away by going on to become the biggest and best hard rock band of the '70s. Fronted by funky and fast-talking Steven Tyler, Aerosmith was anchored by the rock-solid rhythm tandem of Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer, while guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford were the instrumental gunslingers of the band. Much of Aerosmith's appeal lies in the band's outlaw personas, particularly on such incendiary cuts as "Back in the Saddle" and the equally powerful "Draw the Line." The flip side of these nuggets were arena anthems like the prototype power ballad "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion," a simmering classic written by Tyler about Perry's wife. Unlike many hard rock bands of the time whose sound was solely rooted in heavy blues-rock, Aerosmith was an unabashed fan of pop. Not only did the band cover the Beatles ("Come Together") and The ShangriLas ("Remember [Walking in the Sand]), but paid tribute to James Brown by writing its own "Mother Popcorn." SKU: 3102582

Best Of Broadside 1962-1988, The
Full title: The Best Of Broadside 1962-1988: Anthems Of The American Underground From The Pages Of Broadside Magazine. Includes a 158-page spiral-bound book. Compilation producers: Jeff Place, Ronald D. Cohen. Includes liner notes by Jeff Place, Ronald D. Cohen, Anthony Seeger, Josh Dunson. THE BEST OF BROADSIDE 1962-1988: ANTHEMS OF THE AMERICAN UNDERGROUND FROM THE PAGES OF BROADSIDE MAGAZINE was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Album Notes and for Best Historical Album. In the early 1960s the magazine Broadside was dedicated to publishing the lyrics to and articles about what were then known as protest songs, part of a long tradition in folk. These addressed, among other topics: war, accepted social mores, racism, the environment, social injustice, and the struggles of workers and immigrants. Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Malvina Reynolds and more got their first exposure from Broadside. BEST OF BROADSIDE documents a non-commercial folk movement (some mightcall it underground) that addressed the aforementioned topics where popular media did not. The spectrum of styles is broad as American music itself: the deceptively agreeable Phil Ochs, Dylan (known here as "Blind Boy Grunt"), and Janis Ian; the passionate blues-drenched gospel of Reverend Frederick Douglas Kirkpatrick; the raunchy folk-rock of the Fugs (the proto-punk "Kill For Peace"); and the embryonic soul sounds of the Human Condition and Nina Simone. For the sheer scope represented here, BEST OF BROADSIDE is essential for the devotee of American folk music and its part in the tumultuous history of the '60s. SKU: 1052070

MTV Unplugged
Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Mike Inez (guitar, bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Additional personnel: Scott Olson (guitar, bass). Recorded at The Majestic Theater, Brooklyn Academy Of Music, Brooklyn, New York on April 10, 1996. UNPLUGGED isn't Alice In Chains' first unplugged record; it's just the first official, MTV-sanctioned one. The EPs JAR OF FLIES and SAP are both low-key, mostly-acoustic outings that achieved a similar vibe without the benefit of an MTV appearance. Which is to say Alice In Chains isn't jumping on a bandwagon here; they're doingmore of something they do very well. UNPLUGGED features acoustic versions of songs from every record in the Seattle band's catalog except its debut, FACELIFT. And it heavily features guitarist Jerry Cantrell, who wrote or co-wrote 12 of these 13 songs, including the previously-unrecorded "Killer Is Me." Cantrell's vocals pace that one along with "Heaven Beside You" and "Over Now." Lead singer Layne Staley, meanwhile, finds a fitting outlet here for his creaky voice, particularly as he tackles harrowing images of drug addiction in "Sludge Factory" and "Down In A Hole." Fair Warning [Remastered]
Van Halen: David Lee Roth (vocals); Eddie Van Halen (guitar, background vocals); Michael Anthony (bass, background vocals); Alex Van Halen (drums). Recorded in 1981. Digitally remastered by Chris Bellman. Also available with "Women And Children First" on 1 cassette. A classic and gritty riff opens "Mean Street," and Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth are off and running. "Sinner's Swing" is a hard-rock take on the big-band sound, with Mr. Roth successfully capturing the vibe of the swing era. "Unchained" contains Eddie's hyperactive riffs and majestic soloing, while "When Push Comes To Shove" features a funky bassline by Michael Anthony, and a slinky rap from Roth. "SoThis Is Love" contains a sing-along chorus and a fluid, blues-based solo. Capping off the album is a synthesizer solo that foreshadows the 1984 album. If it's not broke, don't fix it--Van Halen relied for quite a while on the same infectious hard-rock formula that makes FAIR WARNING a winner. The album is questionably their finest moment and is a perfect place to start exploring one of hard rock's premier outfits. SKU: 1053845

Down To Earth
Original score composed by Jamshied Sharifi. Chris Rock's amiable update of HEAVEN CAN WAIT (and countless earlier Hollywood comedies along the same lines) is accompanied by an urban contemporary soundtrack that fits it like a glove. The Roots with Amel Larrieux kick things off with their contribution, "Glitches," a commentary on contemporary existence and the prospects of an afterlife, which reaches the very Zen conclusion "always enjoy the skin you are in." Ginuwine surfaces from between the sheets just long enough to croon a typical slice of Ginuwinealia with "Can You Tell It's Me," while Sticky Fingaz' "What If I Was White" is a hilarious litany of the social pluses and minuses associated with a lack of skin pigmentation. Elsewhere, 3LW are perky, and cute enough in a squeaky kind of way, Snoop Doggy Dog's "Gin and Juice" is badass in an old school kind of way, and Jill Scott oozes sophistication, as do, surprisingly, BoneThugs-N-Harmony, who take the Human League's "Human" to another level entirely. The best is saved for last, however, with Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything," which combines all the aforementioned elements in one neat, alluring, and thoughtful package. SKU: 1059540

Riot Act
Pearl Jam: Eddie Vedder (vocals, guitar); Matt Cameron (guitar, drums, percussion); Mike McCready, Stone Gossard (guitar); Jeff Ament (bass). Additional personnel: Boom Gaspar (Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Adam Kasper (piano). Recorded at Studio X, Seattle, Washington. Emerging from a three-year hibernation, Pearl Jam returns with RIOT ACT, a hard-hitting collection of 15 cuts that finds the band leaving behind the experimental nuances of BINAURAL and YIELD. Instead, Eddie Vedder puts on his hair shirt as he takes on both inner and outer conflict amid ambiguity. Hitched to the twin-guitar might of Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, Vedder treats Dubya scornfully on the howling "Bush Leaguer" and manages to turn the camera inward on the waltz-flavored chaos of "I Am Mine." The subtle presence of a humming keyboard on the driving "Get Right" is the sole concession to incorporating any contemporary nuance, and even then, howling guitars ensure this song remains firmly in the rock & roll camp. Other highlights include the thunderous "Save You" along with equally aggressive fret-driven tour de forces like "Ghost" and the slightly more ethereal "You Are." As one of the few survivors of the early-'90s grunge movement, (along with the often overlooked Mudhoney), Pearl Jam has managed to weather the choppy seas of pop culture and emergedwith musical chemistry as rock-solid as its convictions. All Killer No Filler (UK Version) [ECD]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Sum 41: Bizzy D, Brown Sound (vocals, guitar); Cone (bass); Stevo 32 (drums). Additional personnel: Greig "Capitol G" Nori (guitar, background vocals). Engineers include: Joel Kazmi, Joe McGrath, Alan Sanderson. Recorded at Metalworks, Toronto, Canada and Cello Studios, Los Angeles, California. This young pop-punk quartet might seem to be following in the steps of such bands as Blink 182, but they bring something of their own to the table on ALL KILLER NO FILLER. Though much of this album is occupied by bratty, post-Green Day melodic punk with the occasional, reverential nod to old-school punk rock ("Nothing on My Back"), Sum 41 seems self-aware enough to effectively spoof itself. "Maiden and Priest were the gods that we praised," they proudly proclaim on the satirical "Fat Lip,"which also finds them flirting with rap-metal. Meanwhile, the breathlessly catchy "Rhythms" has enough guitar hooks and melodic vocal harmonies to please any power-pop fan. While there's not enough of a sense of punk history displayed here to give you nostalgic memories of the Buzzcocks, Sum 41 does have enough going on upstairs to put them a step or two ahead of the rest of the pop-punk pack. Hallelujah
Sammy Hagar & The Wabo's: Sammy Hagar (vocals, guitar); Vic Johnson (guitar, background vocals); Jesse Harms (keyboards, percussion, background vocals); Mona (bass, background vocals); David Lauser (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Gary Cherone (vocals); Michael Anthony (bass, background vocals); Fran Sheehan, John "Sib" Hashian, Barry Goudreau, Patrick Badger. Whether or not you're a fan of Sammy Hagar and his larger-than-life persona, there's no denying the guy's in-concert might, which has earned him a flotilla of fans and landed him high-profile gigs fronting legendary hard rock bands like Van Halen and Montrose. HALLELUJAH is a live effort, featuring material culled from 2001 and 2002 gigs, that essentiallyserves as a chronology of the Red Rocker's career. After opening with the thunderous "Shaka Doobie" off the millennial TEN 13, this set list finds Hagar dusting off the Montrose classic "Rock Candy" before switching gears into pre-VH solo cuts like the super-catchy nugget "3 Lock Box" and often overlooked soundtrack cut "Heavy Metal." Hagar's lengthy stint with Van Halen is also represented, and finds VH bassist Michael Anthony (who was on the road as part of the brash singer's back-up group), lending a hand. Even more interesting is a cameo by Gary Cherone, Hagar's vocal replacement in VH on the power ballad "When It's Love." Dipping into the three best albums he recorded with Van Halen, (5150,OU812 and FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE), the California native delivers killer versions of "Dreams," "Top of the World," and "Right Now" sure to please die-hard Van Hagar fans. Transistor Radio [Digipak]
Personnel include: Jim James (vocals, guitar); Vic Chesnutt (vocals); Old Joe Clarks (whistle, bass instrument, percussion); Howe Gelb (piano); John Parish, Jordan Hudson, Rachel Blumberg (drums). On his second album for Merge Records, M. Ward refines his inventive indie-folk sound, opting for a pleasantly laid-back mood. The record opens with a beautiful instrumental reading of Brian Wilson's "You Still Believe in Me," a song so marked by Ward's distinctive acoustic-guitarphrasing that it's easy to forget it's a classic Beach Boys tune. Throughout TRANSISTOR RADIO, Ward is an idiosyncratic wonder--he sounds like he's been recorded at a turn-of-the-20th-century tavern on "One Life Away," while "Big Boat" conjures up the atmosphere of a 1950s Sun Records studio rehearsal. Despite this anachronistic quality, the record is remarkably cohesive, with each track confidently flowing into the next like a decades-spanning Americana broadcast. With his uniquely raspy voice and his wonderfully whimsical storytelling, Ward is shaping up to be one of the finest singer/songwriters of his generation, and TRANSISTOR RADIO makes that notion abundantly clear. Black Crowes Live
In early 2002, the Black Crowes posted a cryptic message on their website stating the band was "taking a hiatus." This translated to founding member and drummer Steve Gorman leaving the band and Chris Robinson dabbling with a solo debut. In the meantime, brother Rich went through tapes of the band's2001 tour to compile the two-CD collection LIVE. The result is a 19-song collection that draws from all the band's studio albums (minus 1999's criminally underrated BY YOUR SIDE). Casual fans will be thrilled by killer versions of radio hits like "She Talks To Angels" and "Twice As Hard" while die-hards will undoubtedly have flashbacks to live shows past thanks to in-concert favorites "Sting Me" and "Remedy." Mixed in with newer material like the effervescent "Soul Singing" and sassy "Lickin" from the band's last studio outing LIONS are welcome obscurities from AMORICA ("Cursed Diamond") and THREE SNAKES AND ONE CHARM ("Girl From A Pawnshop"). Unfortunately, the Crowes played it safe in choosing to go with their hit version of Otis Redding's "Hard To Handle" rather than throwing in one of the more eclectic covers they've been known for.
