Very Best Of Robbie Fulks, The
Personnel: Robbie Fulks (vocals, acoustic, electric & classical guitars); Kelly Willis (vocals); Jim DeWan (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Tuey Connell (guitar, electric banjo, background vocals); Robbie Gjersoe (guitar, background vocals); Randy Lee, D. Clinton Thompson (guitar); Tom Brumley, Marty Muse, Paul Carestia (pedal steel guitar); Greg Cahill (banjo); Grant Tye (dobro); Al Murphy (fiddle); Joe Terry (piano, background vocals); Lorne Rall (acoustic & electric basses); Lou Whitney (bass, background vocals); Bret Simons, Brian Hilligoss (acoustic bass); Jerry Eliason, Dallas Wayne, Brad Fordham (bass); Dan Massey (drums, doumbek); Bobby Lloyd Hicks (drums, background vocals); Lisa Pankratz (drums); Tim Miller (spoons); Laura Lee (loops). Engineers include: Craig Williams, Rick Barnes, Joe Hayden. Includes liner notes by Robbie Fulks. With his hot flatpicking, strong voice, extroverted showmanship, and barbed sense of humor, Fulks became a hero of the '90s alt-country underground. After a couple of albums for roots rock haven Bloodshot, Fulks made the leap to the majors for LET'S KILL SATURDAY NIGHT (not to be confused with the album of the same name by Fulks's talented pals the Five Chinese Brothers). After maverick Fulks's inevitable departure from said major, he gave Bloodshot the OK to fill the gaps in his discography with this collection of rarities (the album's title is typical of the musician's gallows humor). It's a testament to Fulks's consistency as both writer and performer that nearly every song herestands right up alongside any of his "official" album cuts. The spot-on "Roots Rock Weirdoes" displays his well-aimed satire at its best. Despite his iconoclasm, Fulks's reverence for classic country is apparent. "May the Best Man Win" is the best song Buck Owens never wrote, while "I Just Want to Meet the Man" is a smartly penned cuckold's tale that wouldn't sound out of place on a vintage George Jones album. Don't view this as a batch of leftovers--it's a vital addition to Fulks's impressive catalog. SKU: 1072304

Close To You
Cassette available on A&M (213 184). NOTES: The Carpenters: Karen Carpenter (vocals, drums); Richard Carpenter (keyboards, background vocals). Additional personnel: Jim Horn, Bob Messenger, Doug Strawn (woodwinds); Joe Osborn, Danny Woodhams (bass); Hal Blaine (drums). Digitallyremastered by Richard Carpenter. Karen and Richard Carpenter's third album, released in 1970, includes two of their signature songs, Bacharach/David's "(They Long To Be) Close To You" and Paul Williams' "We've Only Just Begun," a tune originally written as a commercial jingle for California's Crocker Banks. The rest of the album continues the siblings' exquisite taste in outside material, returning to Williams for "I Kept On Loving You" and to Bacharach for the Shirelles' "Baby It's You." Also featured here is an appealing version of the classic "I'll Never Fall In Love Again." Other fine covers include Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe" and an arrestingly mournful version of Lennon/McCartney's "Help." The album also includes four Richard Carpenter originals, with "Another Song" and the girl-groupish "Maybe It's You" the highlights. CLOSE TO YOU is one of the Carpenters' most commercially and artistically successful albums. SKU: 4125668

Jump Back (The Best Of The Rolling Stones 1971-1993)
Full title: Jump Back: The Best Of The Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger, Ron Wood (vocals, guitar); Mike Taylor (guitar, slide guitar, bass instrument); Keith Richards (guitar, background vocals); Bill Wyman (bass instrument); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel include: Bobby Womack (vocals); Sugar Blue (harmonica); Billy Preston (piano, keyboards); Sly Dunbar (percussion). Producers: The Glimmer Twins; Jimmy Miller; Chris Kimsey. Recording information: 1971 - 1993. JUMP BACK pulls together the Rolling Stones' biggest hits from 1971's STICKY FINGERS right through to 1989's STEEL WHEELS. Although the non-chronological sequencing can be disorienting (the set kicks off with 1981's "Start Me Up," then immediately rewinds 10 years to the 71 classic "Brown Sugar"), the sheer quality and comprehensiveness of the disc proves the band was still a powerful force after the '60s ended. The strongest material here is from the early '70s, with standouts like the gorgeous "Wild Horses," the anthemic "It's Only Rock 'N Roll," and "Bitch," one of the Stones' best-ever full-tilt rockers. As always, Mick, Keith, and company ride some funky grooves, too, especially on the disco-flavored "Hot Stuff"and "Miss You" (with its irresistible falsetto refrain). Of course, there are also good tunes from the '80s, including the wistful "Waiting on a Friend," a strong cover of Bob & Earl's 1964 hit "Harlem Shuffle," and 1989's "Mixed Emotions" (which recalls the group's earlier sound). Only the Stones could release a BEST OF collection comprised of material from the decades following their acclaimed peak years and still make it sound like a rock & roll rulebook. SKU: 3100885

Gasoline Alley
Cassette available on Mercury (824 881). NOTES: Personnel: Rod Stewart (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Harry (vocals); Ronnie Lane (vocals, bass); Ron Wood (acoustic, slide & electric guitar, bass), Martin Quittenton(acoustic & electric guitar); Stanley Matthews (mandolin); Dick Powell (violin); Ian McLagan, Pete Sears (piano); Dennis O'Flynn (acoustic bass); Mick Waller, Kenneth Jones (drums); William Gaffe (whistle). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Joined in the studio by drinking buddies and Faces members (often one in the same), Rod Stewart's made his breakout hit album GASOLINE ALLEY. The marriage of bottleneck guitar and mandolin, abundant barrelhouse piano and Rod the Mod's passionate rasp were the beginnings of an identifiable sound associated with Stewart up through the mid-'70s. After covering the Stones, Ewan McColl and Mike D'Abo on his debut album, Rod included tunes by Dylan ("Only A Hobo"), Bobby Womack ("It's All Over Now") and Elton John ("Country Comforts")for the followup. Although songs like the Stewart-penned "Lady Day" and "Jo's Lament" show off the bawdy Scot's more introspective side, "You're My Girl (I Don't Want To Discuss It)" is a hearty slice of rock'n'roll that could have appeared on a Faces album (seeing as Ron Wood, Ronnie Lane and Kenny Jones backed him up on it). With GASOLINE ALLEY serving as a stylistic blueprint for Rod Stewart, the table was set for many of this album's participants to return and partake in creating EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY, Stewart's most successful album ever. Scattered Smothered And Covered
Hootie & The Blowfish: Mark Bryan, Darius Rucker (vocals, guitar); Dean Felber (vocals, bass); Jim Sonefeld (vocals, drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Edwin McCain (vocals); Jon Nau (keyboards); Craig Shields (baritone saxophone); Gary Greene (percussion). Producers: Don Gehman, Tracy Schroeder, Don Dixon, Mark Williams. Principally recorded at N.R.G. Recording Services, North Hollywood, California and Reflection Studios, Charlotte, North Carolina. Still entirely comfortable with their reputation of being the ultimate bar band despite having released a debut that sold around 15 million copies,Hootie & The Blowfish regrouped for their fourth album with a covers record featuring rarities and previously unreleased material. Hipsters may sneer at the unassuming musical delivery and Joe Six-Pack personae, but the band's dedication to its fans extended to spearheading an Internet campaign that found voters picking a third of the songs on this collection. Of the five songs picked by web fiat, artists who get the Hootie treatment include Led Zeppelin (a mandolin-driven "Hey Hey What Can I Do"), The Smiths (a note-perfect "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want"), and the New Grass Revival (a harmony-laden "Let Me Be Your Man"). The Hootie selections that round out this surprisingly diverse bag include R.E.M., whose "Driver 8" is given a dirge-like arrangement, and a punky rendition of The Reivers' "Araby" that offers some redemption. Darius Rucker's soulful baritone continues to keep the Blowfish afloat and is best utilized on a rich reading of Roy Orbison's "Dream Baby," complete with Jordanaires-like harmonizing. SKU: 1047662

Van Lear Rose
Personnel: Loretta Lynn (vocals, acoustic guitar); Jack White (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, organ, percussion); Dan John Miller (acoustic guitar, percussion, background vocals); Dave Feeny (slide guitar, pedal steel guitar, dobro, percussion, background vocals); Dirk Powell (banjo, fiddle, bass guitar); Jack Lawrence (bass guitar, percussion, background vocals); Patrick Keeler (drums, percussion, background vocals). Recording information: Nashville, Tennessee (2004). Regardless of opinions about White Stripes leader Jack White's credentials to produce country-music queen Loretta Lynn (he toured with the legendary singer and dedicated 2001's WHITE BLOOD CELLS to her), there's no denying that VAN LEAR ROSE significantly kick-started Lynn's career both commercially and artistically. In a move similar to Rick Rubin's 1990s Johnny Cash productions, White enlists members of his garage-rock cohorts the Greenhornes, along with a couple of country ringers, to back Lynn, giving her the grittiest, most rock-tinged production of her long reign. Encouraged to come up with an album's worth of original tunes for the very first time, Lynn sounds plucky and full of fire. Her marvelous voice is as powerful and graceful as ever, as the septuagenarian singer gamely leads the band of youngsters through honky-tonk burners, bluegrass-tinged acoustic numbers, and even an evocative spoken-word recitation. Closer in spirit to Lynn's spunky '60s classics than anything she'd released in decades, VAN LEAR ROSE is built to reassemble the faithful and snare some new ears as well. SKU: 6557987

Pretty Toney Album, The (Parental Advisory) [PA]
Personnel: Ghostface Killah (rap vocals); Musiq, K. Fox (vocals); Sheek Louch, Styles P., Missy Elliott, Jackie-O, Jadakiss (rap vocals). Producers include: Emile, True Master, RZA, Minnesota, No ID. On the intro to his fourth solo record, Ghostface (aka Ghostface Killah, aka Tony Starks) makes pains to pronounce that the Wu-Tang Clan is still intact and working on their next record. However, THE PRETTY TONEY ALBUM may be the least Wu-Tang-flavored outing by any member of the crew. Among the many guest shots, there's not one appearance from a Wu-Tang member, and merely two tracks are produced by resident Wu guru the RZA. PRETTY TONEY does not suffer from this, however, as the record is rife with powerful beats and striking samples. As onemember in a legion of strong Wu personalities, Ghostface has been consistently underrated. However, he is an impressive rapper with a powerful throaty delivery who can hit hard (on "Beat the Clock"), while still revealing a softer side (on the pleading "Tooken Back"). Pulling out references from Bonzi Wells to Robin Leach, he shows off his skills on PRETTY TONEY with welcome ease, as if it's just second nature. SKU: 6557939

Vertigo [Remastered]
Personnel: Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Donald Byrd, Kenny Dorham (trumpet); Sonny Clark, Herbie Hancock (piano); Butch Warren (bass); Billy Higgins, Tony Williams (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on June 14, 1962 and February 11, 1963. Originally released on Blue Note (1085, 80118). Includes liner notes by Ben Sidran and Michael Cuscuna. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster. This is part of the Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series. Blue Note provides not one but two outstanding sessions with this reissue of Jackie McLean's stellar VERTIGO. The first five tracks constitute a session from 1963 that featured veterans McLean, Donald Byrd, and Butch Warren with the new recruits Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams. Williams, who, astoundingly, was in his mid-teens at the time, makes his recording debut here, just a couple of months before joining Miles Davis' group for which he would become legendary. The second half is from a session the year before with Kenny Dorham in place of Byrd and Sonny Clark and Billy Higgins filling in the rhythm section. With these two separate sessions, the listener is able to distinctly hear the contrasts between the hard-bop standard that had sustained McLean in the late '50s and the "New Thing" that would dominate the '60s. The straight-ahead swing that characterizes the '62 session is much more streamlined and crisp, while the influence of youngsters Hancock and Williams in '63 brings McLean closer toward the freer style that he would employ on the coming ONE STEP BEYOND and DESTINATION OUT. Highlights include the off-kilter "Dusty Foot," Hancock's bluesey "Yams," and the blistering "The Three Minors." SKU: 1075472

Permanent Vacation
Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, piano, harmonica); Joe Perry (guitar, background vocals); Brad Whitford (guitar); Tom Hamilton (bass); Joey Kramer (drums). Additional personnel: Christine Arnott (spoken vocals); Bruce Fairbairn (cello, background vocals); Scott Fairbairn (cello); Drew Arnott (Mellotron); Jim Vallance (organ); Morgan Rael (steel drums). The Margarita Horns: Tom Keelyside (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Ian Putz (baritone saxophone); Henry Christian, Bruce Fairbairn (trumpet); Bob Rogers (trombone). Recorded at Little Mountain Sound Studios, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. All tracks have been digitally remastered. A true comeback album, Aerosmith's PERMANENT VACATION featured the original line-up, and it gave the band its first top 10 hit in a decade ("Angel"). Thanks to Tyler & Perry's ground-breaking collaboration with Run D.M.C. in 1986 (on Aerosmith's old hit, "Walk This Way"), the band's visibility was high. The rehabilitated band took advantage of that opening with this album, a batch of hardrock songs that recalled their glory days of the 70s. SKU: 1070339

All You Can Eat
Personnel: K.D. Lang (vocals, banjo, ukelin, harp, keyboards, loops); Ben Mink (guitar, E-bow, ukulele, violin, viola, urhu, strings, keyboards, synthesizer, loops); JohnFriesen (cello); Ingrid, Isabel (strings); Teddy Borowiecki (piano, organ, pipe organ, Fender Rhodes electric piano, keyboards, synthesizer); David Piltch (bass); Randall Stoll (drums); Graham Boyle (percussion). Recorded at Placebo Sound, Vancouver, Canada. After the success of INGENUE, K.D. Lang and long-time music collaborator Ben Mink picked up and moved shop from glamorous L.A., returning to their native Canada to formulate the smoothest and most organic album of Lang's pop era. The cunningly titled ALL YOU CAN EAT shows Lang's emerging openness ("Sexuality"), but reflects a wariness of being a pop commodity. There is also the sensation that this is a self-realized album--not the gear-up for another Grammy, not a song-cycle directed to the hip confines of Los Angeles, but something of her own making. ALL YOU CAN EAT jaunts through "the warm scent of lust" where "the world of love begins" to show Lang's musical diversity through the different stages of romance. The delicate string arrangement behind "Infinite And Unforeseen" offers Lang's soaring vocals the chance to move in its ambience, and "I Want It All" is all dance-floor stride through soulful and modern R&B textures, with a bigger beat than much of her previous material. ALL YOU CAN EAT again proves Lang's grip on what makes contemporary pop work. The slickness behind the dance grooves combines assurance with a willingness to experiment, while her voice carries the material to its fullness. ALL YOU CAN EAT might not make her the "queen of popularity" ("If I Were You"), but it certainly covers many of the bases. SKU: 3100301

Jimi Plays Berkeley
Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar); Billy Cox (bass); Mitch Mitchell (drums). Compilation producers: Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, John McDermott. Recorded live at the Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley, California on May 30, 1970. Includes liner notes by John McDermott. While there's certainly no shortage of posthumous Jimi Hendrix concert recordings running the gamut in terms of quality, this one is something special. It captures Hendrix in a period of transition. He was ready to start a new chapter, having no way of knowing he'd be dead in a matter of months. After his Band of Gypsys phase, he had decided to reunite the original Experience, but bassist Noel Redding declined, perhaps convinced that his band, Fat Mattress, was bound for glory. Consequently, the visceral R&B of the Gypsys mixed with the fluid open-endedness of the Experience through the combination of Mitch Mitchell and drummer Billy Cox. On this night in Berkeley in 1970, the trio was on fire, roaring through "old" chestnuts ("Hey Joe," "Purple Haze") invested with new life, and pushing the boundaries with works-in-progress (embryonic versions of what would become "Straight Ahead" and "New Rising Sun"). It's interesting to note that while Hendrix's gut-wrenching solos on the evening's second set were among his most expressive, the song list tended toward the more blues-based numbers rather than the psychedelic masterpieces he'd been concocting in the studio. It's as fascinating to hear him make his way through the thickets where composition and improvisation meet, as it is tragic that we'll never know where he would have emerged at the other end of hisjourney. Thorns, The
This is an Enhanced CD, whichcontains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Thorns: Shawn Mullins (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, dulcimer, vihuela, keyboards, percussion); Matthew Sweet (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, baritone ukelele, vihuela, keyboards, marxophone, percussion); Pete Droge (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, ukelin, keyboards, zildjuans). Includes limited edition bonus CD. Additional personnel: Greg Leisz (acoustic, electric guitars, pedal steel, lap steel, & 12-string guitar, electric dulcimer); Brendan O'Brien (acoustic & electric guitars, hurdy gurdy, harmonica, keyboards, bass, percussion); Roy Bittan (piano); Jim Keltner (drums). Recorded at Southern Tracks Studios, Atlanta, Georgia. Any time a new "supergroup" is formed, fans of the combo's individual members are both excited and skeptical. In the case of The Thorns, these particular emotions ran especially high when it came to singer/songwriters as talented, critically lauded, and seemingly incongruous as power-pop icon Matthew Sweet, neo-folkie Shawn Mullins and Seattle rocker Pete Droge. Amazingly, the word that comes to mind upon first listen to THE THORNS is "band." Putting aside all prima donna tendencies in the service of finding a cohesive sound, the boys come up with a spectacularly lush, organic, and relaxed stylistic fusion. Recalling other extraordinary groups like Crosby, Stills & Nash and RUMORS-era Fleetwood Mac, the Thorns' delicately strummed acoustic guitars, sparkling yet rootsy production, and gorgeously full three-part harmonies paint a consistently uplifting sonic landscape that's distinctly retro, yet never purely imitative. Randy Newman
Personnel includes: Randy Newman (vocals, piano); Anthony Terran (trumpet); Herb Ellis, Jim Horn, Plas Johnson, Larry Knechtel, Carol Kaye, Al Casey, Milton Bernhardt. Includes original release liner notes by Stan Cornyn. Originally titled RANDY NEWMAN CREATES SOMETHING NEW UNDER THE SUN and released with a hopelessly unhip album cover, Randy Newman's heavily-orchestrated debut album has more in common with Van Dyke Parks's SONG CYCLE or Harpers Bizarre's ANYTHING GOES than the stripped-down sound of Newman's better-known '70s albums. (Uncoincidentally, both the latter werealso produced by Newman's childhood friend Lenny Waronker; Newman was involved in both songwriting and arrangement.) The album is best known for early examples of Newman's satiric gifts such as "Davy the Fat Boy," the middle-America-mocking "The Beehive State," and "So Long, Dad." But more serious and emotional songs like "Bet No One Ever Hurt This Bad" and the majestic "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today" (impressively covered by the likes of Judy Collins and Dusty Springfield) reveal a deeper side to Newman's songwriting that's sometimes overshadowed by the more overtly funny songs. Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1
Personnel: George Michael (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, percussion); Phil Palmer (guitar); Emily Burridge, Alfia Nakipbekova (cello); Andy Hamilton (saxophone); Chris Cameron (piano, keyboards); Tony Patler (keyboards); Deon Estus (bass, background vocals); Ian Thomas (drums); Danny Cummings (percussion); Shirley Lewis (background vocals). Recorded at Sarm West and Metropolis Studios, London, England. From its odd, defensive title to the announcement that none of the album's videos would include the photogenic singer/songwriter, George Michael's second solo album consciously repositioned the ex-Wham! frontman as a mature artist rather than a teenybopper idol. Indeed, the video for "Freedom '90," which shares only its title with Wham's 1984 hit, features the ritual burning of Michael's trademark leather jacket. Career intent aside, LISTEN WITHOUT PREJUDICE is an excellent adult-pop album opening with the tender "Praying For Time" and continuing through nine more excellent, well-sung, and melodic examples of smooth commercial pop, the highlight being the angry "They Won't Go When I Go." Although a more dance-oriented LISTEN WITHOUT PREJUDICE, VOLUME TWO was due for release shortly after the first volume, it was never issued. This projected follow-up may be yet another casualty of the protracted legal battle between George Michael and Sony Music that derailed the singer's career forover half a decade. SKU: 1000172

Battle Of The Field
Albion Country Band: Simon Nicol (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, electric dulcimer, synthesizer); Martin Carthy (vocals, acoustic guitar); Sue Harris (vocals, oboe, hammer dulcimer); John Kirkpatrick (vocals, accordion, concertina, melodeon, electric piano); Ashley Hutchings (vocals, bass); Roger Sallow (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Martin Nicholls, John Iveson, Colin Sheen, Paul Beer (sackbut); DaveMattacks (percussion). Recorded at Sound Techniques, London, England in 1973. By 1973 a full-time group, The Albion Band was originally the name given to the musicians assembled by Ashley Hutchings for Shirley Collins' 1971 album NO ROSES. It boasted folk mainstay Martin Carthy and acknowledged master of the accordion John Kirkpatrick in its ranks, with further colouring added by oboist Sue Harris. However, the line-up proved short-lived and this, their sole album, was shelved for three years, being issued by Island only once Hutchings had moved on to another label and unveiled the ambitious 12-piece Albion Dance Band. BATTLE OF THE FIELD was the first flowering of Hutchings' vision of an electric ensemble devoted to traditional English music, and featured additional original songs in the same vein, such as Richard Thompson's mighty "Albion Sunrise" and "New St. George." The combination of strong material and fine musicianship set a high standard for subsequent permutations of the Albion Band to equal. SKU: 3103304

Through The Years
Includes liner notes by Casserine Toussaint. With aband as long-lived and prolific as Jethro Tull, there are naturally compilations aplenty. So THROUGH THE YEARS, with its three-decade perspective on Tull, avoids the obvious choices. Instead of crowd-pleasing riff-rockers that radio listeners have been bombarded with for ages, this collection focuses on lesser-known Tull tracks, providing a kind of alternative history for the neophyte, and a walk through familiar-but-esoteric pastures for the longtime fan. Aside from an energetic live version of the flute-driven rocker "Locomotive Breath," the only "radio" song here is "Living in the Past." Beyond that, THROUGH THE YEARS explores the outer reaches of the Tull catalog. One of the lesser-known songs from the classic AQUALUNG album, "Wind Up" is a pointed, acerbic attack on Christian hypocrisy. SONGS FROM THE WOOD's "The Whistler" ventures into the more pastoral, progressive folk-rock side of the band's sound. This compilation isn't afraid to venture into the later volumes of Tull's history either, and the willingness to leave preconceptions beside makes it possible for THROUGH THE YEARS to present Tull in a fresh--if not entirely unfamiliar--light. Matriarch Of The Blues
Personnel includes: Etta James (vocals); Bobby Murray, Josh Sklair, Leo Nocentelli (guitar); Jimmy Z Zavala (harmonica, tenor & baritone saxophones); Lee R. Thornburg (trumpet, valve trombone); Tom Poole (trumpet); David K. Matthews (piano); Mike Finnigan (Hammond B-3 organ); Sametto James (bass); Donto James (drums, percussion); Ross Locke (percussion, background vocals); Goldman Redding (background vocals). Recorded at Fort Athens Studio, Riverside, California. Includes liner notes by Patricia Kannas. MATRIARCH OF THE BLUES was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Sandwiched between trad jazz excursions BLUE GARDENIA and HEART OF A WOMAN came MATRIARCH OF THE BLUES, a millennial outing featuring Etta James unleashing her powerful growl on a wide-ranging mix of soul and rock & roll covers. This outing found a then 62-year old Peaches roaring over a crack band equally at home pumping punchy horns and a slinky groove into the Born Again-era Dylan nugget "Gotta Serve Somebody" and laying down a funky bed for O.V. Wright'stasty "Don't Let My Baby Ride." Not surprisingly, James's strongest moments come on ballads like Ray Charles's gospel-flavored "Come Back Baby" and Ann Peebles's pleading "You're Gonna Make Me Cry." This veteran vocalist easily slips into the swamp-rock pocket of CCR's "Born On The Bayou" and rides herd over a particularly crisp reading of Big Mama Thornton's oft-covered "Hound Dog." Even The Rolling Stones' disco anthem "Miss You" is given an even more lascivious twist by an undulating mid-tempo groove that replaces the dance beat with flamenco-like nuances and luscious sounding horns. Kotache (marimba); Simon Johns (6-string bass); C. Taylor, Andy Ramsay (drums); T. Barnes (bongos). Producers: John McEntire, Jim O'Rourke, Stereolab. Recorded at Soma Electronic Music Studio, Chicago, Illinois between October 2000 & February 2001. How much is too much of a good thing? Depends where you stand on the thing to begin with. Such is the case with Stereolab. Detractors who were never moved by the group's sound to begin with will lament the fact that little new ground is broken on SOUND-DUST, especially after hints at new directions were dropped on 1999's COBRA PHASES album. It's true that this Gallic/British/American collective sticks to their usual blend of bubbling analog synthesizers, interlocking marimba and vibraphone ostinatos, odd-metered, cyclical rhythms, and Brigitte Bardot-with-a-Master's-Degree vocals. However, anyone who's attracted to the band's still-distinctive (despite leagues of imitators), retro-futuristic electro-lounge sound will be pleased that the group stood it's ground, dispensing large dollops of frothy joy on their first official long-player of the 21st century they've spent so much time foreshadowing. Besides, in the long view, the horn charts and sophisticated arrangements do show marked evolution from the group's Velvet Underground-reverent beginnings. To borrow the title of another British band's album, "enjoy the melodic sunshine." SKU: 1064488

50000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong (39 Golden Greats)
The Fall: Ed Blaney (vocals, guitar); Mark E.Smith (vocals); Julia Nagle (guitar, keyboards); Craig Scanlon (guitar); Dave Bush, Simon Rogers (keyboards); Steve Hanley (bass guitar); Karl Burns, Paul Hanley, Simon Wolstencroft (drums). Recording information: 1978 - 2003. From the late 1970s to the early '00s, almost every year brought with it at least one Fall album. Throughout the career of the ridiculously prolific British post-punk band, the one consistent element has been Mark E. Smith. With his unmistakably entrancing vocal sneer and oft-absurd lyrics, Smith is the hard-living heart of the Fall, stridently leading a nearly endless array of musicians under the band's banner. Nowhere is the Fall's longevity more evident on the first track of this two-disc collection, 1978' |
