Theory Of A Deadman [PA]
Theory Of A Deadman: Tyler Connolly (vocals, guitar); David Brenner (guitar); Dean Back (bass); Tim Hart (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Brian Larson (violin); Joshua Greenlaw (viola); Charles Inkman (cello); Robin Diaz, Danny Craig (drums). Recorded at Greenhouse Studios, Vancouver, British Columbia. With their self-titled debut, Theory Of A Deadman became the flagship act for Nickelback's label 604. Another fringe benefit came by way of the SPIDERMAN soundtrack, where this Canadian quartet's "Invisible Man" not only appeared, but the band's guitarist Tyler Connolly was invited to team up with Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger on the mega-hit "Hero." Kroeger further helped out by co-writing half of the material on Theory Of A Deadman's debut. In a quest to "appeal to 16-year-old girls as well as 35-year-old guys," Connolly steeps most of his subject matter in the muck and mire of love while tending a garden of crunchy riffs and pounding rhythms. Songs like "Nothing Could Come Between Us" and the chugging bittersweet "Point To Prove" switch from devotion to devastation on a dime while the squalling "What You Deserve" strikes a pose of defiance in the face of a flamed-out relationship. Aside from the introspective and anti-suicide "The Last Song,"Theory Of A Deadman keeps it basic for fans looking for a fix between Nickelback and Creed albums. SKU: 1074921

Songs From My Funeral
Snakefarm: Anna Domino (vocals, electric guitar, accordion); Michel Delory (acoustic, electric & classical guitars, dobro, banjo, keyboards, drum programming). Additional personnel: Stephen Ulrich (electric guitar); Paul Shapiro (flute, recorder, tenor saxophone); Paul Dugan (acoustic & electric basses). Recorded at Light Of Day, New York, New York. Combining trip-hop, funk, folk, acid-blues and a concoction of other genres, Snakefarm delivers a debut release that most veteran acts would find hard to top. The husband-and-wife team of American singer/songwriter Anna Domino and Belgian guitarist/programmer Michel Delory collaborates quite successfully, producing transient, vibrant and spacious grooves. Sweet, soulful yet folkish vocal performances from Domino make SONGS FROM MY FUNERAL a delight. "St. James," "Frankie andJohnny" and the swirling intro of "John Henry" are will stick in your head after one listen. Backed by drum loops and layered with tremolo guitar, SONGS FROM MY FUNERAL provides the listener with loungey, head-nodding tracks laced with vivid, evocative lyrics. It's an album full of blue collar stories and American pie served up trip-hop style. SKU: 1016845

Vespertine
Personnel: Bjork (vocals, programming); Caryl Thomas, Zeena Parkins (harp); Guy Sigsworth (celeste, Clavichord, programming); Jake Davies, Damian Taylor, Matthew Herbert, Matmos, Thomas Knak, Valgeir Sigurdsson, Marius De Vries, Martin Console (programming). Producers: Bjork, Thomas Knak, Marius De Vries. Engineers include: Jake Davies, Damian Taylor, Erik Gosh. VESPERTINE was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Bjork's first non-soundtrack album since HOMOGENIC is positively pastoral compared with that release's experimental electronic textures. Swathed in strings and laced with beautiful choral arrangements, VESPERTINE has more in common with SELMASONGS, echoing that DANCER IN THE DARK soundtrack album's meandering melody lines, while smoothing out and adding an ethereal sheen to the more angular approaches of the singer's previous work. Here the idiosyncratic Icelander lets loose with her full range of vocal stylings, though even her most innocent, little-girl-lost persona can't hide her steelyintelligence. The album-opening "Hidden Place" starts with foreboding electronic rhythms--it's about unspoken or unfulfilled desires, and it's simultaneously exotic-sounding and dripping with melancholy, a mood that persists until the gently cathartic "Undo," with its mantra-like line "It's not meant to be a strife/It's not meant to be a struggle uphill." Though VESPERTINE's textures might ostensibly seem smooth and seamless, beneath the surface Bjork's emotions run raw and exposed, as evidenced by the final naked outburst of "I love him" in the coda to "Pagan Poetry." VESPERTINE is Bjork's most mature, fully realized integration of her pastoral Icelandic roots and her contemporary electronica (electronic scamps Matmos are collaborators here) inclinations to date. Amerikkka's Most Wanted [Remastered] [PA]
This reissue contains the EP KILL AT WILL as a bonus. Personnel: Ice Cube, Yo-Yo, Chuck D, Flava Flav (rap vocals); Al "Purple" Hays (guitar, bass); Vincent Henry (flute, saxophone);Tim "Timteo" Rollins (piano); Dan Wood, Epitome Of Scratch, Krissta, Keith Shocklee, Sir Jinx, J. Dee, Ricky Harris, D.E.L., T-Bone, Son Of Beserk, Lil Les (background vocals). Producers include: Hank Shocklee, Ice Cube, Chuck D, Sir Jinx, Yo-Yo. Recorded at Greene Street Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Alan Light. As one of the MCs in the classic crew NWA, Ice Cube made a name for himself at an early age, helping to pioneer West Coast hip-hop. Ironically though, Cube's debut solo album, AMERIKKKA'S MOST WANTED, is deep-rooted in fast-paced tracks that are reminiscent of the East Coast sound that help define Public Enemy. In fact, it was the Bomb Squad who produced most of the album. Tracks like "The Nigga ya Love to Hate" and "Turn Off the Radio" are high-energy gems that show the fiery delivery that helped make Cube one of the industry's true stars. Recommended tracks include "Once Upon a Time in the Projects," "Rollin' Wit the Lench Mob," and "Endangered Species (Tales From the Darkside)," the last of which has a guest appearance from Chuck D. AMERIKKKA'S MOST WANTED is truly one of the defining albums of the rap age; an instant classic that's sure to stand the test of time. SKU: 1081544

Incesticide
INCESTICIDE is a compilation of material recorded for the John Peel Sessions, rare singles from Nirvana's tenure with Sub Pop, and previously-unreleased tracks. Nirvana: Kurt Cobain (vocals, guitar); Chris Novoselic (vocals, bass); David Grohl(vocals, drums). Producers include: Jack Endino, Steve Fisk, Miti Adhikari, Dale Griffin. Engineers include: M. Engles, F. Kay, John Taylor. Includes liner notes by Kurt Cobain. All songs written by members of Nirvana except "Turnaround" (Mark Mothersbaugh/Gerald V. Casale), "Molly's Lips" and "Son Of A Gun" (Eugene Kelly/Francis McKee). More than just a b-sides collection, INCESTICIDE culls together Nirvana's work before and around their now-legendary albums. Released between the groundbreaking NEVERMIND and the artsier IN UTERO, the rarities and outtakes which make up this album shed new light on Nirvana's oeuvre, filling in the gaps between official releases and providing fans with a wider variety of recordings from different sources. Highlights include three covers, taken from John Peel sessions: a Devo tune ("Turnaround") and two songs by Scotland's The Vaselines, whose purposefully vapid pop magic is given the force of a juggernaut, with the minimal production that best showcases the Nirvana's aggressive grace. The famous quasi-live recording conditions of the BBC sessions provide another standout, the surging, desperate "Aneurysm," which remains one of Nirvana's finest recorded moments. SKU: 1003248

Let It Rock (The Best Of Georgia Satellites)
Before the Black Crowes hit big with their sleazy Stones rock, the Georgia Satellites were letting it rip with the same formula, albeit it with a rougher, almost punk edge similar to the Replacements'. Although the Satellites released a total of four albums during the '80s, only their self-titled debut remains in print, so the 1993 compilation LET IT ROCK: THE BEST OF is of interest to the serious fan as well as the newcomer. At a whopping 20 tracks in length, LET IT ROCK shows that there was much more to the Georgia Satellites than just their two biggest hits, "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" and "Battleship Chains." LET IT ROCK: THE BESTOF is a solid set from beginning to end. SKU: 1009559

Myrrh
Personnel include: Robin Williamson (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, violin, cello, flute, oboe, piano, bass guitar, gong); Stan Lee Buttons (pedal steel guitar, organ, bass guitar); Janet Williamson (piano, organ). Liner Note Author: Alan Robinson. Recording information: London, England (12/1971). MYRRH was originally released in 1972, when Robin Williamson was at the time still a member of the IncredibleString Band, the ensemble he started with Mike Heron in 1966. These ten songs are all Williamson originals, with the exception of "Strings In The Earth And Air" by Ivan Pawle. Where his band's recordings were then getting increasingly electric, this is a return to a more acoustic bearing. This set includes some gorgeous, if overlooked, songs from the vast catalog Williamson has created. "Will We Open The Heavens" features a fragile guitar line accompanied by a contrasting backdrop of strings, flute, bass, and piano. His poetic sensibilities are in fine form, drawing on both the traditions and lore of his native British Isles, as well as the communal spirit of the era. This album contains all of the elements Williamson would continue to explore over the decades to follow. SKU: 6566717

Synergy
Personnel: Dave Weckl (drums, tambourine, percussion); Brandon Fields (soprano, tenor & baritone saxophones, keyboards, synthesizer); Jay Oliver (organ, keyboards, synthesizer); Buzz Feiten (electric, nylon string & steel string guitars); Tom Kennedy (bass). Recorded at Mad Hatter Studios, Los Angeles, California from January 18-22, 1999. Includes liner notes by Dave Weckl. Dave Weckl's second release with his band comes after the group spent a long, grueling schedule on the road to support their first album. Hence, the title, SYNERGY, reflects the band's tight cohesiveness, and their ability to lay down intense grooves and burn through stunning solo sections as if of one mind. Specializing in muscular rhythmic complexities, Weckl doeswhat he does best here while maintaining the clean, driving groove that has typified this project since its inception. With the support of electric jazz veterans like Brandon Fields (sax), Tom Kennedy (bass), Buzz Feiten (guitar) and longtime partner Jay Oliver (keyboards), Weckl has graduated from the over-the-top style that characterized his years with Chick Corea into a mature, thoughtful leader. The music covers many stylistic bases while always maintaining a signature sound. Not surprisingly, there is more rock and funk in the mix than real jazz, yet still with plenty of room for some intense, though concise, solo efforts for which each of these virtuosos are internationally known. Disc highlights include the uplifting "Highlife," the shuffling "Swunk," Weckl's percussion extravaganza "Cultural Concurrence," and a remake of his own "Tower Of Inspiration '99." SKU: 1005761

Once In A Blue Moon
Personnel: Lal Waterson (vocals); Oliver Knight (vocals, guitar, bass); Maira Gilbody, Norma Waterson, Jim Boyes, Barry Coope, Lester Simpson (vocals); Martin Cartby (acoustic guitar); Troy Donockley (whistle); Jo Freya (saxophone, clarinet); Ray Williams (drums). Lal Waterson was a member of the celebrated vocal group the Watersons in the '60s and '70s and has also recorded memorable albums with brother Mike and sister Norma. There was no greater album in 1996 than ONCE IN A BLUE MOON, a collaboration with her son Oliver Knight, who also produced the record. Rather like the song title "Flight of the Pelican," Lal's voice and words are a combination of the curious, the quirky, and the wonderful, often imbued with a melancholy reminiscent of Nick Drake. The words are closer to poetry than conventional song lyrics. Oliver Knight's guitar playing predominates, but brother-in-law Martin Carthy joins in for "How Can I Leave," which also features a clarinet. Norma Waterson sings on this and the finale, "Some Old Salty," whose seven voices also include acclaimed vocaltrio Coope, Boyes & Simpson. Elsewhere, saxophone, drums, and whistle are used sparingly. Songs as fine as "Midnight Feast" and "Stumbling On" are surely destined to enter the repertoire of many a discerning singer. SKU: 4112770

Chuck [ECD]
Canuck pop-punk brats follow 2002's 'Does This Look Infected' with this, their third album, named for the UN aid worker who saved their lives when they found themselves trapped in war-torn Congo. The experience seems to have sobered the band somewhat, as 'Chuck'contains less of their usual goofball antics and toilet bowl humour, and instead sports a heavier, harder and faster feel with more of a hardcore and metal influence. Songs Of Sanctuary [SACD]
Personnel: Karl Jenkins (conductor); Miriam Stockley (vocals); Robert St. John Wright (concertmaster); Pamela Thorby (recorder); Mike Taylor (quena); Frank Ricotti, Jody Barratt Jenkins (percussion); Mary Carewe (background vocals); The London Philharmonic. Recorded at Angel Recording Studios,Islington, London. The work of European composer Karl Jenkins, the Adiemus debut SONGS OF SANCTUARY is one of those late 20th century musical triumphs whose success came, oddly enough, through a Delta Airlines TV commercial in which the track "Adiemus" was featured. The exposure resulted in hefty sales for this initial Adiemus collection and ensured further releases. The music is grounded in Western classical structure but features a vocal technique drawn from Africa and executed exuberantly by a chorus of young children as well as the South African singer Miriam Stockley. Aside from the occasional line of Latin, there are few lyrics. Rather, the vocalists recite phonetic sounds, resulting in an album that can be understood and appreciated by many. SKU: 6476191

Ram It Down [Remastered]
Personnel: Rob Halford (vocals); Glenn Tipton, K.K. Downing (guitar); Ian Hill (bass); Dave Holland (drums). Includes liner notes by Judas Priest. Digitally remastered by Jon Astley. Judas Priest attempted to take the mainstream rock world by storm with 1986's TURBO, with its melodic tendencies and polished production. It performed respectably on the charts but wasn't the big crossover smash the band had hoped for. 1988's RAM IT DOWN proves that the real Priest was always lurking just under that high-gloss rock sheen. Resuming the band's previous straight-ahead heavy metal direction, RAM IT DOWN is not as lethal-sounding as its follow-up, 1990's PAINKILLER, and it has one or two relapses into pop-metal territory, including a cover of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." However, with highlights such as the title track and "Blood Red Skies," the album shows that Judas Priest was well on the way back to itsprevious heavy metal glory days. SKU: 1070234

Velvet Goldmine
Producers include: Randall Poster, Todd Haynes, Michael Stipe, Shudder To Think, Carl Glanville. Engineers include: Bryan Zee, Bil Emmons. Includes liner notes by Todd Haynes. In the '90s, the '70s nostalgia boom finally kicked in, working its wayinto fashion, TV, and of course, music and film. VELVET GOLDMINE is a sterling example of those last two media, a music-oriented film centered around '70s style and powered by a glam-centric soundtrack that features both the original era's artisans and new worshippers at the '70s altar. The pounding piano and art school dandy aura of Roxy Music's "Virginia Plain" is cultural ground zero for VELVET GOLDMINE. Roxy synthesist Brian Eno contributes one of his early pop tracks, "Needle in the Camel's Eye." Largely forgotten Roxy peers Cockney Rebel are represented by CR vocalist Steve Harley's "Make Me Smile." Naturally, no glam-oriented compilation would be complete without a cut from the original star-child Marc Bolan, and that requirement is ably filled by the presence of T-Rex's "Diamond Meadows." Kate & Anna McGarrigle
Personnel: Kate McGarrigle (vocals, banjo, piano); Anna McGarrigle (vocals, accordion); Chaim Tannenbaum (vocals, guitar); Peter Weldon (vocals, banjo); Jane McGarrigle Forsland (vocals, organ); Dane Lanken (vocals); Lowell George (acoustic & electric guitars); Greg Prestopino (guitar, piano); David Spinoza, Hugh McCracken, Tony Rice, Amos Garrett, Andrew Gold (guitar); Jay Unger, Floyd Gilbeau (fiddle); Joel Tepp (clarinet, harmonica); Plas Johnson (clarinet, alto saxophone); Nick DeCaro (accordion); David Grisman (mandolin); Bobby Keys (tenor saxophone); Tony Levin, Red Callender (bass); Stephen Gadd, Russ Kunkel (drums); Densil Lang (percussion). These Canadian sisters unsuspectingly recorded this album, which, like Love's Forever Changes, is a huge critics' favourite, yet deserves much wider acceptance. Spotted and recorded by the canny Joe Boyd it is an album brimming with melancholy. Kate was formerly Mrs Loudon Wainwright, and the excellent "Swimming Song" was written by him. Elsewhere, the evocative and anthemic "(Talk To Me Of) Mendocino" is a total joy and completely captures afeeling of being resigned to homesickness. Those who have not yet discovered this album will not be disappointed with this strong recommendation. Another quiet classic of great depth. SKU: 3101600

Wooden Leather [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Nappy Roots: R. Prophet, Scales, B. Stille, Ron Clutch, Big V Scream'n, Skinny Deville. Additional personnel: Anthony Hamilton, Raphael Saadiq (vocals). Producers include: Raphael Saadiq, Mike City, Kanye West, David Banner, Lil Jo. While NappyRoots have been gloriously reveling in their own "country" style since the mid-1990s, it wasn't until 2002, when their critically lauded debut WATERMELON, CHICKEN & GRITZ, featuring the crossover hit "Po' Folks," dropped that the rest of the world was let in on the party. Not content to simmer in success, the six-member hip-hop outfit swiftly followed up that record a mere year later with the solid WOODEN LEATHER. Hailing from Kentucky (well, two of the members are Oakland imports), Nappy Roots play an appealing hybrid of rap in the league of artists like Outkast, Mos Def, Organized Konfusion, and the Native Tongues, with wit betraying an understated intelligence and an ability to create an organic world that's distinctly its own. Nappy Roots also recognize a good hook when they see one, as evidenced by "Roun' the Globe," with its refrain "the whole damn world is country" over a frenetic Afro-folk landscape. They also prove their ability to scribe singable message songs on the should-be megahit "Sick & Tired" (best moment--the call and answer "I'm sick & tired of running and ducking/quit runnin' then"). Also, one of the most compelling up-and-coming R&B stars, Anthony Hamilton, drops by for the smoothly powerful "Push On." And it goes on and on as the Nappy Roots continue to carve a healthy niche for their brand of country in the hip-hop world. SKU: 1086695
