101
Depeche Mode: Martin Gore (vocals, guitar, keyboards, synthesizers); David Gahan (vocals); Alan Wilder, Andrew Fletcher (keyboards, synthesizers, background vocals). Recorded live at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California on June 18, 1988. This 2 CD set comes with an elaborate booklet. Perhaps thefirst indication that Depeche Mode's US following had expanded from a small but vociferous cult was the release of documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker's film DEPECHE MODE 101, which showcased a sold-out stadium concert in southern California. This two-disc set is the soundtrack to that film. If the idea of a concert film of a synth-pop band whose live performances are based on pre-recorded tapes and sequencers seems a bit odd, this may not be for you, but Depeche Mode fans often rank this one of their favorite releases. Away from their pristine studio settings, Martin Gore's songs and Dave Gahan's voice lose some of their smooth edges, and the vocally adoring crowd undoubtedly contributes to the general air of relaxed good humor, even on the bleaker tracks. "101" was reissued in Europe under the title TOTAL LIVE. SKU: 1032524

Faith
Personnel: George Michael (vocals, various instruments); Hugh Burns, Lord Monty, Lee Fothergill, J.J. Belle, Roddy Matthews, Robert Ahwai (guitar); John Altman, Mark Chandler, Steve Waterman, Malcolm Griffiths, Jamie Talbot, Steve Sidwell, Paul Spong, Rick Taylor (horns); Chris Cameron (organ, piano, keyboards); Betsy Cook, Danny Schogger (keyboards); DeonEstus (bass); Ian Thomas (drums); Andy Duncan (percussion); Shirley Lewis, Chris Cameron (backing vocals). Recorded at PUK Studios, Denmark and Sarm West Studios, London, England in 1987. Before Faith George Michael was, to the record buyer, one half (or more) of Wham!, with its trite pop material and sexy teen image. Faith was crafted to establish him as a mature artist and serious lyricist, and it accomplished exactly that. Having had two years in gestation, it sold over 10 million copies and launched Michael's new personal and artistic image. 'I Want Your Sex' was a guaranteed number 1 hit after being widely banned, and was followed by five more hit singles. Although now seeming dated by its club-style production and spoilt by some embarrassing lyrics, it nevertheless marked the emergence of a major pop talent for the 90s. SKU: 1002934

New Day Has Come, A
Personnel includes: Celine Dion (vocals); Dorian Cheah (guitar, violin); Michael Thompson, Paul Jackson Jr (guitar); Felipe Elgueta, Simon Franglen, Guy Roche (programming); Chantal Kreviazuk, Richard Page, Sam Watters, Mary Griffin, Sue Ann Carwell, Yvonne Williams, Joey Diggs, John Stoddast (background vocals). Producers include: Ric Wake, Gerald De Palmas, Robert "Mutt" Lange, Simon Franglen, Anders Bagge. This album represents Celine Dion's return to recording after a lengthy hiatus (nobody ever believed that "retirement" guff) taken to spend time with her family. As such, the aptly titled A NEW DAY HAS COME finds everybody's favorite French Canadian diva audibly reveling in her return to the vocation for which she was born. The title track finds Dion's elegant voice resplendent amid a pool of twinkling synthesizers, full of energy and joy. "Right in Front of You" opens with some attention-grabbing violin-sawingbefore giving way to a Euro-synth sound that falls halfway between power ballad and dance tune a la Cher. There's no question about the balladic nature of "Have You Ever Been in Love," it's the kind of heart-on-sleeve tune Dion's big, soaring voice was made for. Elsewhere, Dion stretches out a bit, touching on R&B with "Rain, Tax (It's Inevitable)" and a poignant version of Eden Ahbez's standard "Nature Boy," but that familiar vocal stamina is consistent throughout A NEW DAY HAS COME. Shanen Shah
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was the leading exponent of traditional qawwali music until his death in 1997. Developed as devotional music by the ancient Sufi poets, the qawwal often serves as a conduit between the worshipper and the Creator. This music also has a secular side to it, too, when it appears in the form of a love song, or ghazal. This CD features both songs of praise, and songs of love and beauty. For example, "Shamas-Ud-Doha, Badar-Ud-Doja" is based thematically around the worship of Mohammed, Allah's prophet, while "Kehna Ghalat Ghalat To Chhupana Sahi Sahi" is a ghazal sung in Urdu about a hypocritical lover. Nusrat was recognized as "Shahen-Shah-e-Qawwali," which means "The Brightest Star in Qawwali." SHAHEN-SHAH confirms this assertion. SKU: 1000714

Ruff Ryders First Lady
Personnel includes: Eve, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot, DMX, Drag On, The Lox, Parle, C.J., P. Killer Tracks, Eve, Diona, Eric, Grimy, Ron Martinez (vocals); Adam Gazzola, Rich Keller (various instruments). Producers: Swizz Beatz, Shok, P.K., Icepick. Engineers include: Eric Smith, Adam G., Anthony Sanders. FIRST LADY is the debut album from Eve, a self-described "pit bull in a skirt" and the only female MC in the Ruff Ryders crew. Though she was first signed onto Dr. Dre'sInterscope-funded Aftermath Entertainment, her deal expired before she was able to release an album. After working on posse cuts and guest appearances with Ruff Ryders, Blackstreet, DJ Clue, and the Roots among others, she released this album for Ruff Ryders/Interscope. The killer beats provided by producer Swizz Beatz, along with Eve's straight hardcore flow make FIRST LADY one of the most complete debut hip-hop albums in recent memory. "What You Want," which was first heard on the Ruff Ryders compilation album, had been burning up urban radio stations for months at the time of this album's release. Standout tracks include "Gotta Man," "Philly, Philly," and "Scenario 2000," featuring DMX, the Lox, and Drag-On. SKU: 5053264

Hell Among The Yearlings
Personnel: Gillian Welch (vocals, acoustic guitar, bass, kick drum); David Rawlings (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, snare drum); T-Bone Burnett (piano, Hammond B-3 organ). Engineers include: David Rawlings, Roger Moutenot, Gary Paczosa. Recorded at Sound City, Van Nuys, California; Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, California; Sound Emporium, MCA Music Studio and Nevada, Nashville, Tennessee. Gillian Welch lends her wise-beyond-her-years sensibility to a further exploration of the traditional musicof early 20th century Appalachia, returning to the territory of 1996's REVIVAL. With the exception of the up-tempo, rockabilly-influenced "Honey Now," the songs on HELL AMONG THE YEARLINGS sound so old-timey as to seem almost archival. T-Bone Burnett returns as producer, again making restraint and austerity work well with Welch's starkly beautiful songs, like the melancholic "My Morphine" and the desolate tragedy "One Morning," narrated with quiet poignancy by a dying man's mother. Welch's voice itself, harmonizing with acoustic guitars and banjo, has a gentle, twangy simplicity which speaks of another age. SKU: 1084160

Wondrous World Of...
Damon & Naomi: Damon Krukowski (vocals, guitar, drums); Naomi Yang (vocals, bass). Additional personnel: Kramer (electric guitar, clarinet, Mellotron, emulator, bass, tapes, background vocals). Recorded at Noise, New Jersey in summer 1995. Damon and Naomi's second release is a real beauty, again produced by Mark Kramer, who handled their debut as well as all the releases by their previous band, Galaxie 500. Kramer adds an assortment of instruments and effects to the duo's spare songs, creating emotional landscapes for each number. THE WONDROUS WORLD is probably the peak realization of this collaboration between artists and producer (perhaps realizing this, the pair struck off on their own with their breakthrough follow-up, PLAYBACK SINGERS). Moody, evocative, and poetic, the eight originals are accompanied by a trio of well-chosen covers. The surprise gem is the duo's rendition of Country Joe McDonald's "Who Am I" (originally recorded by Country Joe & The Fish in the '60s); perhaps more apt than surprisingis the set's closing number, The Band's "Whispering Pines" (and really, what could follow such a prayerful slice of solemnity?). Positivity
Incognito: Maysa Leak, Mark Anthoni (vocals); J.P. "Bluey" Maunick (various instruments, guitar); Patrick Clahar (soprano & tenor saxophones); Kevin Robinson (trumpet, flugelhorn); Fayyaz Virji (trombone); Graham Harvey (keyboards, vocoder, bass synthesizer); Peter Hinds (keyboards); Randy Hope Taylor (bass); Richard Bailey (drums); Thomas Dyani (percussion); Sarah Brown (background vocals). Additional personnel: Bud Beadle (baritone saxophone, flute); Richard Bull (keyboards, programming, guitar); Max Beesley (keyboards); Paul "Tubbs" Williams (bass); Ray Hayden (drums, programming, background vocals); Tyrrell (programming). Engineers include: Simon Cotsworth, Ray Hayden, Richard Bull. Recorded at Parkgate, Swanyard, Metropolis, The HitFactory, Opaz and Bump City Studios. Since the glory days of Earth, Wind & Fire, many groups have tried to extend upon Maurice White's classic synthesis of ethnic rhythms, salsa, soul, jazz and funk. Now, along comes Incognito, with their own suave brand of contemporary jazz/R&B. Rising from the ashes of the early 1980s British funk-jazz scene (which produced chart-toppers such as Level 42, Shakatak and Sade), Incognito is a hard grooving 12-piece ensemble featuring soaring horns, a dynamic vocal trio and a pulsing rhythm section. Taking off on the success of their two previous Verve/Forecast releases (INSIDE LIFE and TRIBES, VIBES AND SCRIBES), Incognito really gelled as a live band during their triumphant 1992 American tour, when their opening act often upstaged headliners Lee Ritenour and The Yellowjackets. Guitarist Jean Paul "Bluesy" Maunick is the creative force behind Incognito, and it was his strength of vision which kept the idea of British funk-jazz alive after the scene more or less collapsed in the mid-1980s. Maunick's writing/arranging skills were showcased on a pair of tunes he conceived for Maxi Priest's 1989 hit album, BONAFIDE, enabling him to re-tool Incognito in its present form. "Bluesy" Maunick's arranging skills are heard to particular advantage on the acid jazz groove "Deep Waters," where he sets up a lean, infectious pulse for his tale of sensual surrender, as the vocalists and rhythm players trade figures back and forth in wave after wave of warm harmonies. The resulting music is smooth, sumptuous funk. Lead vocalist Maysa Leak's horn-like fluency and effortless sense of swing contribute mightily to the group sound, which is part of Incognito's appeal: while Leak, Mark Anthoni and Sarah Brown set the melodic direction for each song, the overall effect (as on the James Brown-inspired anthem "Talkin' Loud") is of free-spirited interplay and melodic give and take--their vocal harmonies are often used as a compliment to the horn and rhythm sections. Amanda Marshall
Personnel: Amanda Marshall (vocals); David Wipper (acoustic guitar, mandolin); Tim Pierce (acoustic & electric guitars); Bob Mann (acoustic guitar); Tommy Byrnes (electric guitar); Peter Kent (violin); Erica Duke-Kirkpatrick (cello); T-Bone Wolk (accordion); Louis Taylor (soprano saxophone); David Tyson (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Leland Sklar (bass); Kenny Aronoff (drums, percussion); Diana DeWitt (background vocals). This Canadian singer has a pop-rock style reminiscent of Sheryl Crow, with a dash of Melissa Etheridge's growl. Her earlier influences range from folk-popper James Taylor (evident on "Trust Me [This Is Love]") to her countryman Bryan Adams ("Sitting On Top Of The World"). As in Crow's songs, characters from all walks of life populate Marshall's songs, whether it's the Southern homemaker escaping heralcoholic spouse in "Birmingham" or the lost soul looking for salvation in "Last Exit To Eden." Only 10 songs long, AMANDA MARSHALL is a tasty appetizer for what promises to be a delectable body of work. SKU: 1005214

Cut [Remastered]
The Slits: Ari Up (vocals);Viv Albertine (guitar); Tessa Pollitt (bass guitar); Budgie (drums). When they formed the band in London, the members of the Slits couldn't even tune their own instruments, but two years later, in 1979, they recorded this seriously strange and upbeat album, firmly planting a flag in the skull of punk for all of womankind. Under the producing wing of reggae giant Dennis Bovell, CUT rocks, rips, roots under, and rides over ska and punk cliches with unfettered glee and heavy bass. The sexy yowling on "Shoplifting" and "So Tough" shows how vocalist Ari Up connects Courtney Love, Kathleen Hanna, Bjork, and Kim Gordon on the female-singer family tree. Tracks like "Typical Girls" and "Ping Pong Affair" sprawl through complex sagas of drug addiction, sexual violence, forbidden love, and feminist declarations, all without losing either intellect or a goofy sense of humor. CUT obviously influenced everyone from 1980s New Wavers like Cyndi Lauper, the B-52's, and the Go-Go's to alt-rockers like Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's a landmark record, heavy with historical value, but also light with extreme fun. (Note: This reissue also includes two bonus tracks--a cover of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and an alternate version of "Love Und Romance," entitled "Liebe And Romanze.") SKU: 1046891

Classic Yes
CLASSIC YES includes extra live tracks originally issued on a bonus 7" EP as part of the original LP package. Yes includes: Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman, Bill Bruford, Alan White, Tony Kaye. Producers: Yes, Eddie Offord. Compilation producer: Chris Squire. Recorded between 1970 and 1978.Originally released on Atlantic (19320). Digitally remastered by Joe Gastwirt (Ocean View Digital). How do you effectively anthologize on a single record the career of a band known for side-long epics? You either pick some of their shorter songs, or their finest, most representative epics. Somehow, this 1981 compilation, which encapsulates the band's '70s career, manages to do both. The sparkling ballad "Wonderous (sic) Stories" and the poignant "Heart of the Sunrise," with its shifting dynamics and heartfelt vocal, are Yes at their song-oriented best. Longer, multi-part "suites" like CLOSE TO THE EDGE's "And You and I" and THE YES ALBUM's "Starship Trooper" present the more complex, structurally sophisticated side of the band, where the interaction between Steve Howe, Chris Squire and either Rick Wakeman or Tony Kaye is the key to the elaborate arrangements. It could have easily been a double or triple album, but for a concise snapshot of Yes in the '70s, CLASSIC YES fills the bill nicely. SKU: 1004746

Live At The Key Club
Pennywise: Jim Lindberg, Fletcher Dragge, Randy Bradbury, Byron McMackin. Recorded live at The Key Club, Hollywood, California. With a live album, you'd like to expect that the band do their best to capture themagic impromptu, of-the-moment performance. Devoid of fancy Pro Tools editing and track-to-track mixing, Pennywise have done just that with LIVE AT THE KEY CLUB. Born in the spirit of punk legends such as Black Flag and Descendents, Pennywise have become known for notorious concert goings-on and their brand of So Cal hardcore sounds super-charged here, especially on "Homesick" and "No Reason Why," the latter penned by founding bassist, the late Jason Thirsk, who's name is frequently and fondly mentioned during stage banter by vocalist Jim Lindberg. Face Dances [Remastered]
Originally released in March 1981, FACE DANCES was the Who's first album following the death of the group's original drummer, Keith Moon. He was replaced by Kenney Jones of the Small Faces. The Who: Roger Daltrey (vocals); Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar, keyboards); John Entwistle (vocals, bass); Kenney Jones (drums). Producer: Bill Szymczyk. Reissue producers: Jon Astley, Andy Macpherson. Principally recorded at Odyssey Studios, London, England from June-December 1980. The Who's first album of the '80s and their first without drum maniac Keith Moon was viewed with cynicism by many longtime Who fans, who declared the band a dead issue. In fact, FACE DANCES was arguably the band's last aesthetically successful album. The reckless abandon of the Moon era was irretrievable, but the Who's sound was maturing all along, and Moon's madness fit Townshend's mature, sophisticated tunes less and less. FACE DANCES is no bland-out, but the band mines the subtle end of their dynamic range more extensively and successfully than ever before. With the advancing years, the tension between Townshend's thoughtful lyrics and the rock-hero bravado of Roger Daltrey's delivery had grown more pronounced, charging these songs with subtextual energy. Guest Rabbit Bundrick's keyboards add color to Townshend's increasingly introspective examinations of adult relationships and responsibilites (sounds boring as hell, but really it's not) on "Another Tricky Day" and "How Can You Do It Alone." Entwistle's bass still rages and rumbles like a nuclear submarine, and the band's fire stillrages on FACE DANCES, albeit with a bit more finesse. SKU: 1019755

Debateable Lands
Personnel: Kit Haigh (guitar); Gregor Borland (fiddle, viola, bass); Kathryn Tickell (fiddle, pipes); Ron Shaw (cello); Troy Donockley (Uilleann pipes); Julian Sutton (melodeon); Nick Holland (piano). Recorded at Castlesound Studios, Pencaitland, Scotland. Kathryn Tickell is acknowledged as one of the principal players of the Northumbrian smallpipes, the quieter cousin of the Highland and uillean pipes. Tickell played piano from the age of six, took up the pipes at nine, and by 13 she was learning the Shetland fiddle style. She recorded her first album in 1984, the same year that the Lord Mayor of Newcastle-upon-Tyne named her official piper (the first person to hold that title in over 150 years). Tickell specializes in traditional Northumbrian music, Scottish and Irish tunes, and contemporary compositions, including her own. The 1999 album DEBATEABLE LANDS comprises a suite of 11 instrumental tunes and medleys inspired by the music and heritage of the Border Region. It opens with a dextrous hornpipe medley, followed by the stately "Our Kate," written forlocal writer Catherine Cookson. Moving through many moods the suite climaxes in the evocative medley "Stories From The Debateable Lands." A duet of "Our Kate" closes the album gently. Troy Donockley plays alongside Tickell, probably the first time a Northumbrian and uillean piper have played together on record. Each piece on DEBATEABLE LANDS is worthy of mention individually and they complement each other beautifully. SKU: 3104587

Alien Lanes
It ain't easy keeping up with Guided By Voices, who are averaging an album every nine months as they hit their stride. And that's not to mention all the EPs and 7-inch singles they toss out in between. By the time you get to the next paragraph, they'll probably have finished another one. Their records sound like it, too, with tapehiss and questionable notes intruding on songs that often seem unfinished and almost never exceed 2 minutes. But that's the price you pay for GBV's ridiculously bountiful pop talent; bandleader Robert Pollard's head is crammed with hooks, and he's always rushing ahead as if he can't wait to get to the next one. Where BEE THOUSAND was full of instantly catchy Beatles and Hollies hooks, ALIEN LANES has more of a '70s hard-rock mood, with two-minute blasts of muscularly melodic rock crashing into one-minute (and less) bits of arena-rock balladry and miscellaneous weirdness. It'll take a few listens before it all sinks in. "Motor Away" edits the simultaneous leaving and longing of Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run" down to two glorious minutes. It's one of several songs here that pare anthemic rock hooks and roaring guitars down to their pop essence. "Big Chief Chinese Restaurant," on the other hand, is one of those overture-like ballads with which hard-rock bands used to awe arena crowds, complete with a guitar lead that nods to Guns N' Roses. Being Guided By Voices, though, the lead goes as quick as it comes, the whole thing fades out before a minute is up, and another blast of Beatlesque hard-rock comes crashing in. SKU: 1005135

Producers include: Rick Nowels, Dido, Rollo, Duncan Bridgeman, Sister Bliss. Engineers include: Ash Howes, Phill Brown, Goetz. UK chanteuse Dido uses her undisputed pop vocal smarts to enchant the listener from the outset of her solo debut NO ANGEL. Captivating songs laced with electronica, trip-hop and rock combine effortlessly with the singer/songwriter's sultry vocals to create a fresh sounding, vibrant release. Tracks like "Don't Think of Me," "All You Want," and "Thank You," are strong and powerful but never overwhelming. There are also some more ambient-type cuts, such as "My Lover's Gone" and "Here With Me," where swirling, airy sound textures envelop the song. Throughout NO ANGEL, Dido's melting vocals enfold the listener. Disarming cuts like "Honestly OK," "My Life," and "I'm No Angel," are immediately engaging. The album also includes a bonus track, "Take My Hand." SKU: 1053695

And Then There Were Three [Remastered]
Genesis: Phil Collins (vocals, drums); Mike Rutherford (guitar, bass); Tony Banks (keyboards). Engineers: David Hentschel, Pierre Geoffrey Chateau. Recorded at Relight Studios, Hilvarenbeek, Holland. Digitally remastered by Nick Davis, Geoff Callingham & Chris Blair. When guitarist Steve Hackett left Genesis for a solo career after touring behind 1977's WIND AND WUTHERING, he was the second major defection the group had suffered in as many years. Instead of helplessly disintegrating, the remaining trio circled the wagons and bounced back with the solid AND THEN THERE WERE THREE. Rather than employ any outside studio musicians to take up the slack, Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford instead played every instrument themselves. Resolutely reflectivethroughout, this 1978 release finds Genesis populating its songs with a broad range of characters. Among the more memorable ones are the fast-talking record exec on "Down and Out" (a song that could be construed as a veiled swipe at the departed Hackett) and the larger-than-life cattle-driving cowpuncher on the synth-soaked "Ballad of Big." Although the songs on this record are more concise than Genesis' earlier, conceptual work, the band still retains the gift of capturing moods. The breathtaking "Snowbound" perfectly encompasses the feeling of stepping outside into a freshly minted snowfall. An air of yearning runs through "Follow You Follow Me," a romantic yarn that also became Genesis' first American Top 30 hit. SKU: 4125646

Untouchable (Tummy Touch Collectables)
Underground British label Tummy Touch's collection of 1998-99 bongo-led ditties for the dance floor commences with two breakbeat tracks. The first is soaring and somnambulant, the next, an Idjut Boys rework with a funky bassline, is more in Tummy Touch's mode of percussive floor action. The tempo builds for the first half of the album, the percussion gets more frenetic, and the sounds become steadily wilder. Groove Armada's "Wholemeal" is a Latino frenzy. Combining disco chord progressions with percussion straight from Cuba, it develops into a lush deep house affair. Los Chicharrons' stealthily catchy "Silence Before the Storm" offers a brief respite from the madness. Launching back into the fray, Tutto Matto's "Hugs and Kisses (Ja |
