Smash Mouth
Smashmouth's immensely appealing sound is the missing link between Green Day's pseudo-punk and Weezer's smart, edgy pop. It's savvy--the breezy "Pacific Coast Party" starts off with a quote from the LoveUnlimited Orchestra's "Love's Theme"--and unrelentingly jaunty. Main songwriter Greg Camp holds sway here with a fistful of incisive vignettes that range from chicks 'n' driving to somewhat darker, life-on-the-road subjects. "She Turns Me On" is high quality garage rock with a pop sheen. If "Out of Sight" betrays a creeping ennui with rock life, it's just a breather before the party starts again with "Force Field," which finds the band "Manning my station/taking control of the situation," the frenetic, space-age "Hold You High," and the mod 'The In Set." There's also the added bonus of a fairly faithful rendition of Neil Diamond's "I'm a Believer" that's updated in all the right places. SKU: 1068492

Happy Hour
Personnel: Ted Hawkins (vocals, guitar); Elizabeth Hawkins (vocals);Dale Wilson, Augie Brown, Night Train Clemons (guitar); Dennis Walker (bass); Johnny Greer (drums). Recorded at Music Lab and Sage & Sound, Los Angeles, California. Ted Hawkins' second album follows the blend of his first-a few selections with a band, the rest solo or in duet-with equally stunning results. He wrote 10 of HAPPY HOUR's dozen songs, and each is full of undiminished spirit, his tattered hopes finding footing wherever they can. Hawkins' deeply moving songs and singing mix equal parts blues, R&B, and gospel. Most of these songs are powered by Hawkins' lone strummed guitar, its big, thick, and simple chords ringing out with pulsing urgency. There's incredible beauty throughout HAPPY HOUR. A number of songs feature harmony vocals sung by Hawkins' wife Elizabeth, and the couple's interplay adds an extra measure of beauty and melodic tension. These numbers are instantly likable and full of grace and wisdom. They yield continual gifts and manage to touch on universal themes without ever resorting to cliche. HAPPY HOUR is highly recommended, as is its predecessor, WATCH YOUR STEP. SKU: 5078262

Greatest Hits Vol.1 (Parental Advisory) [PA]
This release includes a bonus DVD. Korn: Jonathan Davis (vocals, bagpipe); James Shaffer, Brian Welch (guitar); Fieldy (bass guitar); David Silviera (drums). Producers: Toby Wright; Jonathan Davis; Korn. Recording information: 1994 - 2004. GREATEST HITS VOL. 1 is a 17-track primer for Korn, a key force behind the "nu metal" tsunami that swept through pop music in the mid-to-late 1990s. Led by frontman (and former coroner's assistant) Jonathan Davis, these California natives weave low-tuned guitars, hip-hop-fueled bass lines, and bleak imagery into memorable songs like the bile-fueled stomp-fest "Right Now," goth-tinged "Alone I Break," andfrenetically raw "Freak on a Leash." Davis's struggle with family dysfunction is a consistent theme, from the band's self-titled 1994 debut (a foreboding "Clown"), right up through 2003's TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR (an uber-heavy "Did My Time"). Korn also keeps pace with peers Marilyn Manson and Limp Bizkit (who both recorded unlikely covers) by adding a pair of new tracks--a faithful reading of Cameo's "Word Up." and, in keeping with their anti-authoritarian bent, a slight tweaking of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall (Parts 1, 2, 3)." Fleshing out this package is a glimpse into the Korn concert experience via a DVD of a performance at New York City's CBGB, recorded in November of 2003. SKU: 6574889

Sleeper Wakes, The
Morgan: Morgan Fisher (keyboards); Tim Staffell (vocals); Bob Sapsed (bass);Mo Bacon (drums, percussion). Recorded at RCA Studios, Rome, Italy in February 1973. Includes liner notes by Morgan Fisher. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Morgan was a '70s prog-rock outfit led by keyboardist Morgan Fisher, best known for his work with Mott The Hoople and Love Sculpture. Though Fisher later pursued everything from post-punk experimentalism to instrumental covers of John Lennon tunes, THE SLEEPER WAKES is solidly in the vintage prog mold of ELP, Genesis, et al. With no guitarist present, Fisher bears much of the instrumental brunt handily, his organ, piano, and synthesizer work impressing with their facility, inventiveness, and even humor--a rarity in '70s prog. An equal amount of credit for the quality of THE SLEEPER WAKES must be given to singer Tim Staffell (forever doomed to rock footnote status as the singer in Smile, the group that eventually became Queen). Staffell is another commodity all too rare in the genre, a vocalist with a pure, clear voice and great range, but no affectation whatsoever. Instead of paying homage to classical music like many of their peers, Morgan flirted with touches of jazz and avant-garde experimentalism, further heightening the idiosyncratic appeal of this underrated album. THE SLEEPER WAKES is a little-known jewel in the crown of vintage progressive rock. SKU: 6416684

Alice
Personnel includes: Tom Waits (vocals, violin, piano, organ, chamberlain, Mellotron, vibraphone, glockenspiel, cymbals); Larry Taylor (acoustic & electric guitars, bass, percussion); Joe Gore (electric guitar); Myles Boisen (banjo); Bebe Risenfors (violin, viola, fiddle, clarinet, bass clarinet, marimba, bass); Dawn Harms, Carla Kihlstedt (violin); Matt Brubeck (cello); Collin Stetson (baritone saxophone); Ara Anderson (trumpet); Gino Robair (marimba, drums, percussion); Eric Perney, Matthew Sperry (bass); Andrew Borger (drums, percussion); Stewart Copeland (drums). Recorded at In The Pocket Studios, Forestville, California. Never one to be outdone, Tom Waits released ALICE and BLOOD MONEY simultaneously, both featuring music written for plays directed by Robert Wilson. Loosely based on THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, ALICE is much more low-key and ballad-heavy than its companion release, but just as incisive and affecting. The title track is a smoky, jazz-tinged torch song that conjures pleasant memories of Waits's evocative work for FrancisFord Coppola's film ONE FROM THE HEART. "Everything You Can Think" is an absurdist portrait a la the seminal RAIN DOGS. Waits opens the door to the freak show on "Poor Edward," a disturbing tune about a man with a female face on the other side of his head, and the more light-hearted "Table Top Joe," a swinging, jazzy tale of a character with no bottom half but plenty of rhythm. Despite the effective journeys into the bizzaro universe, perhaps the most stirring moments on ALICE are the wounded romantic ballads "Fish and Bird" and "I'm Still Here," where Waits's knack for a classic melody mates perfectly with a lyrical combination of wistfulness and regret. Everything I Have Is Yours (The Best Of The MGM Years)
Full title: Everything I Have Is Yours: Best Of MGM Years. Personnel includes: Billy Eckstine (vocals, valve trombone); Sarah Vaughan (vocals); Lester Young, Jimmy Guiffre, Ted Nash (tenor saxophone); Harry "Sweets" Edison, Shorty Rodgers, Roy Eldridge (trumpet); Harry Betts, Kai Winding (trombone); John LaPorta (clarinet); Teddy Wilson, George Shearing (piano); Dick Evans, Barney Kessel (guitar); Al McKibbon, Red Callender (bass); Denzil Best, Lee Young, Max Roach, Louis Bellson (drums); Sonny Burke's Orchestra, Hugo Winterhalter's Orchestra, Buddy Baker's Orchestra, Russ Case's Orchestra, Joe Lipman's Orchestra, Peter Rugolo's Orchestra, Woody Herman's Orchestra, Nelson Riddle's Orhcestra, The Lee Gordon Singers, Lou Bring's Orchestra, Hal Mooney's Orchestra. Compilation producers: Bob Porter, Richard Seidel. Recorded between 1947 and 1957. Includes liner notes by Lee Jeske. Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Polygram Studios). The singer Billy Eckstine has two distinct reputations, one within jazz, one in the world outside of it. The first is as leader of the innovative proto-bebop big band that boasted Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Art Blakey, Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon, and others within its ranks at some time or other. The other, far greater distinction is as one of the most powerful vocalists in any genre. EVERYTHING I HAVE IS YOURS collects the early MGM popular recordings that first established Eckstine as a major star. Billy Eckstine was once tagged "the sepia Sinatra." Apart from its slight condescension, the comparison is inaccurate in that Eckstine shared none of Sinatra's vocal frailties or his psychological complexities. As the jazz vocal expert Will Friedwald once noted, Eckstine "sang like a god." His instantly recognizable burnished baritone just drove the melody forward without hesitation or scruple, even to the point of undermining the lyric on his great hit "I Apologize." For a taste of Eckstine's pure romantic power, listen to his duets with the young Sarah Vaughan on the rhapsodic "Dedicated to You" or Cole Porter's"I Love You," as these two magnificent voices make beautiful music together. Rolling Stones Now, The [SACD] [Remastered]
This is a Hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both Super Audio and regular CD players. The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, harmonica); Keith Richards (guitar, background vocals); Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel: Ian Stewart (piano, organ); Jack Nitzsche (piano). Recorded at Chess Studios, Chicago, Illinois; RCA Studios, Hollywood, California;Regent Sound, London, England. Includes liner notes by Andrew Loog Oldham. THE ROLLING STONES, NOW! is a masterpiece of early British R&B, Rolling Stones style. Things start off with a powerful rendition of Solomon Burke's signature tune "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love." Elsewhere, the Stones take a tour of American music, from Bo Diddley's "Mona," complete with choppy, reverbed guitar, to a slow, churning version of Willie Dixon's blues evergreen "Little Red Rooster," probably the first version of the song to feature fuzz bass. Amid all this esteemed company, though, the standout tracks are the Jagger-Richards originals. "Heart of Stone" could have been a classic soul ballad appropriated from some great, obscure American singer, with its heartbreaking lyrics and poignant accompaniment. On "What a Shame," the Stones prove that they don't have to look to outside sources for their blues. Keith's penetrating slide here, as on "Little Red Rooster," foreshadows greater things to come. On The Threshold Of A Dream
The Moody Blues: Mike Pinder, Justin Hayward, Ray Thomas, John Lodge, Graeme Edge. Additional personnel: Pete Jackson (triangle). Originally releasedon Deram (1035). Includes liner notes by John Reed. Digitally remastered by Steve Fallone (PolyGram Studios). Where this album's predecessor IN SEARCH OF THE LOST CHORD dipped deeply into Eastern-flavored psychedelia, THRESHOLD is more of a straightforward rock record. Things open up experimentally enough, with a spoken-word vignette over electronic drones, but this leads straight into one of the Moodies' poppiest, most up-tempo songs, "Lovely to see You," which would remain a concert favorite for decades. Even notoriously theatrical flautist/vocalist Ray Thomas keeps his eccentricities in check on his effective ballad "Dear Diary." Keyboardist Mike Pinder takes a surprisingly lascivious vocal turn on the anomalous, leering rocker "So Deep Within You." Justin Hayward provides the lion's share of ear-tickling moments with pretty folk-rock tunes such as "Never Comes the Day" and "Are you Sitting Comfortably," while the most adventurous piece "Have you Heard/The Voyage" extends over three discrete tracks, featuring complex instrumental passages and lush harmonies. THRESHOLD doesn't come off as an attempt to cater to the mainstream, it's just a more song-based, less exotic recording than its predecessors. SKU: 1003059

To Whom It May Concern [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include "Lights Out" video and a behind the scenes look at the making of the video. Personnel: Lisa Marie Presley (vocals); Bruce Watson, Gus Walsh, Stuart Mathis, Steve Caton, David Walsh, Wendy Melvoin, Jon Brion, Lyle Workman, Doyle Bramhall, Rusty Anderson (guitar); Cameron Stone (viola, cello); Patrick Warren (piano); Eric Rosse (Fender Rhodes piano, organ, programming); Jim Cox (Hammond B-3 organ); Zac Rae (chamberlain); Paul Bushnell (bass); Matt Chamberlain (drums, tambourine, percussion); Gary Novak (drums, percussion); Abe Laboriel Jr. (acoustic & electronic drums); Lenny Castro (percussion); Danielle Keough, Benjamin Keough, Nicolai Dorian (background vocals). Recorded at Royaltone Studios, North Hollywood, California; Animas Studio, Hollywood, California; Capito Studios, Hollywood, California; Exactly Studios, Los Angeles, California. Bearing the brunt of being Elvis Presley's only child, Lisa Marie Presley wisely chose to sit back and experience life before emerging with her full-length debut album TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN. The results are surprisingly good, thanks to Presley's decision to sidestep becoming some prefabricated pop mannequin and instead take the creative reigns by penning all the lyrics, save the lament "The Road Between." Most of the record is steeped in dark imagery that goes well with her smoky phrasing and finds her serving up autobiographical tidbits like "Someone turned the lights out there in Memphis/That's where my family's buried and gone" from the mid-tempo rock of "Lights Out." A slow-burn vitriol that could be construed as being directed at former spouse Michael Jackson bubbles up throughout the simmering "Important," and willsurely have amateur biographers cocking their ears. Lisa Marie avoids making this musical outing one solely steeped in bitterness by including "So Lovely," a sweet ode to her children that's laced with crying guitar and a snatch of the theme from the film MIDNIGHT COWBOY. Personnel includes: Donald Fagen (vocals, acoustic & electric pianos, organ, synthesizer); Steve Khan (acoustic guitar); Hugh McCracken (guitar, harmonica); Larry Carlton, Dean Parks, Rick Derringer (guitar); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Ronnie Cuber (baritone saxophone); Randy Brecker (trumpet, flugelhorn); Greg Phillinganes (acoustic & electric pianos, clavinet, synthesizer); Michael Omartian (acoustic & electric pianos); Will Lee, Anthony Jackson, Chuck Rainey, Marcus Miller, Abraham Laboriel (bass); Jeff Porcaro, Steve Jordan (drums); Starz Vanderlocket (percussion, background vocals); Valerie Simpson, Zack Sanders, Frank Floyd, Gordon Grody, Daniel Lazerus, Leslie Miller (background vocals). Recorded at Soundworks Digital Audio/Video Recording Studios and Automated Sound, New York, New York; Village Recorders, Los Angeles, California. Quality will out. There was no need to put a great big Steely Dan sticker on this smooth little number, the radio programmers took care of that. No tracks jar, each has a big-smile middle eight and although it may be just too slick for some people's taste, mostly it is a tremendous solo album. 'I.G.Y. (International Geophysical Year)', 'New Frontier' and the title track are gloriously easy on the ear. The cover version of Leiber and Stoller's 'Ruby Baby' is so good itsounds like a Fagen original. New York Dolls
The New York Dolls: Sylvain Sylvain (vocals, guitar, piano); Johnny Thunders (vocals, guitar); David Johansen (vocals, harmonica, gong); Arthur Harold Kane (bass); Jerry Nolan (drums). Additional personnel: Buddy Bowser (saxophone); Todd Rundgren (keyboards). It's hard in retrospect, with all the alternative rock water that's passed under the bridge, to articulate the impact the New York Dolls' incendiary debut had on its release. The Stooges apart (and they were a different kettle of garage band entirely, in content as much as style), there simply hadn't been anything quite as confrontational, cocky and in-your-face as the New York Dolls before. From the classic Thunders/Johansen opener "Personality Crisis" onwards, the Dolls revealed themselves as the new rock outsiders. The album's pungent undertones of low-life street hassle and edgy drug deals and sharply observed narcissismset them apart. And every subsequent punk rock icon, from Joey Ramone to Johnny Rotten, took note. SKU: 1019786

The third disc contains collector's items that include material from soundtracks, other artist's albums and one song from the BUCKINGHAM/NICKS album ("Crying In The Night"). Personnel includes: Stevie Nicks (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano, synthesizer, percussion); Lindsey Buckingham (vocals, guitar, percussion); Tom Petty (vocals, guitar); Sandy Stewart (vocals, piano, synthesizer); Don Henley (vocals, drums); Kenny Loggins, Bruce Hornsby (vocals); Jesse Valenzuala (guitar, mandolin); Mike Campbell (guitar, keyboards, bass); Waddy Wachtel, Dean Parks, Steve Lukather, Joe Walsh, Danny Kortchmar, Mike Landau (guitar); Kenny G (soprano saxophone); Dave Koz (saxophone); Benmont Tench (piano, organ); David Foster (piano); Bob Glaub, Duck Dunn, Tony Levin (bass); Russ Kunkel, Stan Lynch (drums); Sharon Celani, Lori Perry, Carolyn Brooks, Marilyn Martin, David Crosby (background vocals). Producers include: Jimmy Lovine, Gordon Perry, Thom Panunzio, Stevie Nicks, Rupert Hine. Includes liner notes by Danny Goldberg and Stevie Nicks. The accompanying 64-page booklet contains lyrics, musician credits and previously unreleased photos. It makes sense that the first box set to come from a member of Fleetwood Mac is Stevie Nicks'. She has, after all, had the most successful career outside of The Mac. This box set spans her entire solo career in formidable fashion, and included is a lavish booklet with extensive liner notes and many never-before-seen photos. Aside from her solo career, the Mac gem "Rhiannon" (piano version) is included, along with "Gold" (with John Stewart), "Whenever I Call You Friend" (with Kenny Loggins), and "Long Distance Winner" (with Lindsey Buckingham). As for her solo work, hits from "Bella Donna" to "Street Angel" are here, as well as B-sides, soundtrack cuts, and demos. "Reconsider Me" (with Don Henley) is a fine ballad that compares with Stevie's best work. This is a comprehensive package that shows us just how much wonderful music has been created outside of Stevie Nick's Fleetwood Mac tenure. SKU: 1075634

You Won't Forget Me
Personnel includes: Shirley Horn, Miles Davis, Buck Hill, Branford Marsalis, Toots Thielemans, Buster Williams, Billy Hart. Shirley Horn focuses on romantic love songs on this third release for the Verve label. In addition to her powerful rhythm section (Charles Ables on bass, Steve Williams on drums) this release features guest appearances by some of jazz's luminaries: Miles Davis (long a champion ofHorn's music), Wynton and Branford Marsalis, and Toots Thielmans. Interestingly, Horn rarely takes a solo, but repeats the songs over and over, slightly changing the phrasing and continuously building on the piano to change the emphasis. Every cut is a masterpiece, but the stand out is the title cut. Drummer Steve Williams sets up a strange, repetitive quarter note pattern which sounds like a ticking clock over which Miles Davis' muted trumpet floats and soars as Horn sings and plays piano. The track is especially poignant, as it was one of Davis' last appearances on record. The effect is nothing short of breathtaking. This album is a wonderful jazz treasure. SKU: 3101079

Sword Of God, The
Quasi: Sam Coomes (vocals, various instruments); Janet Weiss (drums). Additional personnel: Stanley Zappa (saxophone). Includes liner notes by Sam Coomes. On the fourth album by postmodern popsters Quasi, the duo of Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss and keyboardist/maestro Sam Coomes moves further away from its indie-rock roots towards a realization of a pure pop aesthetic (albeit a slightly twisted one). Thoug Coomes's keyboards are often distorted and his singing often colored by alt-rock urgency, the songs' harmonic and melodic development seem rooted in nothing so much as late-period Beatles. For her part, Weiss keeps Coomes's lofty ambitions grounded in rock-solid rhythm, dressed up by the occasional fillip. Despite a spell as Elliott Smith's touring band, Quasiis more likely to be embraced by the underground than the pop mainstream, which means that Coomes's potential status as the indie-rock Todd Rundgren will be limited to the cognoscenti who are hip enough to purchase THE SWORD OF GOD. Take Off Your Pants And Jacket
Blink 182: Tom DeLonge (vocals, guitar); Mark Hoppus (vocals, bass); Travis Barker (drums). Additional personnel: Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (keyboards). Recorded at Signature Sound, San Diego, California, Larrabee Studios West, Cello Studios, Hollywood, California. Website: www.blink182.com Older and more successful but no less fascinated by the same things as their adolescent fan base (toilet humor, sex, and awkward social situations), Mark, Tom and Travis greet 2001 with another platter's worth of chugging guitar riffs, infectious hooks and plenty of moxie. The album opens with the sequel to thelast cut on ENEMA OF THE STATE. "Anthem Part II" is a generational rant focusing on the hopelessness felt by teens taken lightly by the world because of their age. Blink 182 does a fine job tapping into the universal theme of unrequited love ("Story Of A Lonely Boy"), divorce ("Stay Together For The Kids") and surviving the social perils of high school cliques ("Give Me One Good Reason"). Lest this become a musical equivalent to a Judy Bloom book, Blink throws in plenty of inappropriate moments of Sandler-esque proportions. There's the 40-second, jack-hammer fast diatribe against an ex-girlfriend involving unnatural acts with her parents ("Happy Holidays, You Bastard"), ennui-killing acting out ("Reckless Abandon"), and kicking back with a cute girl at a Vans Warped Tour show. Despite their goofy rep, Blink-182's combination of vulnerable lyrics and pop smarts blow away any notion of these guys being another dumb punk band. SKU: 1062887
