Sweet Bird Of Youth
The Rock-A-Teens: Chris Lopez, Justin Davis Hughes (vocals, guitar); William Joiner (bass); Ballard Lesemann (drums). "This world is filled with such ugly things/Frightful visions is all it brings/All he needs is to hear some pretty sounds." Chris Lopez's quavering wail soulfully emits these words from the edge of sanity near the end of The Rock A Teens' third full-length SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH, and there can be no more appropriate finale to this powerful, sincere, unrefined record. Following the eye and ear-popping GOLDEN TIME, SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH offers testament to this Southern-fried band's position as a rising force infired-up rock & roll. Hailing from Cabbagetown, Georgia, on the outskirts of Atlanta, The Rock A Teens play a spirited, gritty, but melodic brand of '50s raucous, backwoods rock & roll. Their stocks-in-trade are hearty, dexterous, clever songs of life and love. While the organ-infused opening track "Car and Driver" plays off a relatively simple metaphor, it does so in an original and remarkable manner. SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH presents intelligent, hard-hitting rock as the Rock A Teens manage to cull from the music of the past without ever seeming even vaguely anachronistic. SKU: 1050551

Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back
Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Gordon Jenkins (conductor). Arrangements by Don Costa and Gordon Jenkins. Includes liner notes by Stan Cornyn. With this release, a classy common ground was found between early-'70s AM pop and Sinatra's signature style. While what's gone before is well represented by stalwart conductor/arranger Gordon Jenkins, he shock of the new is evidenced in the song selection, which includes a brace of tunes by Joe Raposo (perhaps best known as the composer of Kermit the Frog's signature song "Being Green,") as wellas Kris Kristofferson's "Nobody Wins." This albums calling card, of course, is Sondheim's "Send In The Clowns," from A Little Night Music. This tune is the very definition of self-deprecatory introspection, which is something Sinatra knows more than a little about. SKU: 1018129

Songs From The Wood [Remastered]
Jethro Tull: Ian Anderson (vocals, acousticguitar, mandolin, flute, whistles); Martin Barre (electric guitar, lute); John Evans, David Palmer (keyboards); Barriemore Barlow (marimba, glockenspiel, drums, bells, nakers, tabor); John Glascock (bass, background vocals). In terms of rustic, tights-wearing, elf-loving, flute-heavy, British/Celtic folk-tinged '70s prog-rock, SONGS FROM THE WOOD is the most Tull of all Jethro Tull albums. By 1977 the band had ventured far enough from its heavy blues-rock beginnings to create a completely unique, idiosyncratic sound, filled with European folk mythology, rural imagery and an endearing combination of art-rock and British folk-rock. Elaborate synthesizer fanfares mix with delicate acoustic guitar tapestries, complex arrangements and odd time signatures. SONGS FROM THE WOOD strikes the perfect balance between the proggie ambition of THICK AS A BRICK, the storytelling style of AQUALUNG and the courtly, medieval air of MINSTREL IN THE GALLERY. You Must Believe In Spring [Digipak]
Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Eddie Gomez (bass); Eliot Zigmund (drums). Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California from August 23-25,1977. Includes liner notes by Bill Zavatsky. Pianist Bill Evans's first album for Warner Brothers (after more than five years with Fantasy Records) features a title track by Michel Legrand, a French musician and songwriter who influenced Evans with his use of strong melody and sentiment. Evans turns both to his advantage on YOU MUST BELIEVE IN SPRING, managing as usual to avoid all but the merest hint of sentimentality. Evans's original songs, "We Will Meet Again," and "B Minor Waltz," are both subtly influenced by Legrand's ease with melody, and on both tracks Evans comes close to perfecting his ability to connect instantly with his listener. Included as well is an unusually sedate version of a perennial Evans favorite, the theme from M*A*S*H, which he often included in live performances. This final recording with long-time collaborator, bassist Eddie Gomez, was released in 1981, a year after Evans's death. SKU: 1054687

In Through The Out Door
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant(vocals); Jimmy Page (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); John Paul Jones (synthesizer, bass); John Bonham (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. In the face of England's punk revolution, Led Zeppelin's last studio album simultaneously showed the musical might the quartet still wielded and the creative progression being made before John Bonham's accidental death. Recorded in Abba's Swedish studio, the eight songs comprising IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR ebb and flow through a variety of stylistic shadings. John Paul Jones' use of keyboards gilds the songs and give each a unique twist without drastically altering the band's overall sound. The ominous synthesizer intro of "In The Evening" eventually gives way to some of Jimmy Page's more ethereal playing, while in "Carouselambra," the synth drives the tempo of this ten minute-plus epic. Led Zeppelin convincingly swings on "South Bound Suarez" and shows its range with "Hot Dog," a hoe-down that could have gotten the band a gig at The Grand Ole Opry. The last two songs, "All My Love" and "I'm Gonna Crawl" are showcases for some of Robert Plant's most passionate singing, equalled only by the pleading tone of Jimmy Page's guitar. SKU: 1004941

Good Morning Blues (The Essential Recordings Of Leadbelly)
Includes liner notes by Les Fancourt. The 20 tracks on GOOD MORNING BLUES mostly date fromthe relatively early days of Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter's professional career, after the mid-'30s Library of Congress recordings that made his name. Though he's been primarily thought of as a blues player, Leadbelly from the beginning fused acoustic Delta blues with traditional folk music, jazz, and then-current pop, creating something entirely unique in the process. Besides the well-known title track, GOOD MORNING BLUES features such Leadbelly standouts as his hit "Goodnight Irene," the trad-folk "Gallis Pole," the guitar showcase "Rock Island Line," and the pointedly political anti-racist "Bourgeois Blues." There are many multi-volume Leadbelly retrospectives, but for a good one-disc introduction to one of the 20th century's most unique artists, GOOD MORNING BLUES is tough to beat. SKU: 4126684

Brand New Dance
Personnel: Emmylou Harris (vocals, guitar); Richard Bennett (guitar, mandolin guitarophone, tambourine); Chris Leuzinger, Bruce Bouton, James Hollihan (guitar); Stuart Duncan (mandolin, fiddle); Pete Gorisch (cello); Cindy Reynolds Wyatt (harp); Liam O'Flynn, Davey Spillane (uilleann pipes, whistles); Jo-El Sonnier (French accordion, triangle); John Jarvis, Pete Wasner (piano); Bobby Wood (keyboards, organ); Glenn Worf, Garry Tallent, Bob Wray, Roy Huskey, Jr., Dave Pomeroy (bass); Milton Sledge, Kenny Malone (drums, percussion); Harry Stinson (drums); Iris Dement, Barry Tashian, Kostas, Claire Lynch, Kathy Chiavola, Wayland Patton, Melba Montgomery, Marshall Chapman, Kieran Kane, Jamie O'Hara, Mary Black, Delores Keane (background vocals). The Nashville String Machine: Connie Ellisor, Carl Gorodetzky, James Grosjean, Lee Larrison, Ted Madsen, Robert Mason, Dennis Molchan, Laura Molyneaux, Pamela Sixfin, Mark Tanner, Gary Vanosdale, Kristin Wilkinson (strings). Recorded at Jack's Tracks Recording Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. 1990's BRAND NEW DANCE, Emmylou Harris' 16th studio album, is another in a line of excellent efforts by one of modern country's finest artists. The album was Harris' first (excepting a Christmas album and a gospel record) to fail to produce a Top 40 country hit. Abandoned by the commercial country machine (or liberated from it, depending on your take), Harris would soon begin experimenting with her sound, resulting in a successful collaboration with rock producer Daniel Lanois (WRECKING BALL), and a tour with an edgy backing band (SPYBOY). Nothing about BRAND NEW DANCE points to Harris' imminent commercial demise; the songs, playing, and performances here are typically impeccable and impassioned. Songwriter/husband Paul Kennerley contributes two of the album's best compositions, "Sweet Dreams of You" and the title track. Harris also plucks gems from the catalogs of Bruce Springsteen ("Tougher Than the Rest"), Robin and Lynda Williams ("Rollin' and Ramblin'"), and David Mallet ("Red Red Rose"). The album's overriding themes, yearning andheartache, dovetail nicely with the understated backing tracks and Harris' aching, quavering vocals. Those seeking evidence of modern country's demise might well start with the unjust fate this disc suffered. SKU: 1005232

Ass Pocket Of Whiskey
A ASS POCKET O' WHISKEY features bluesman Burnside backed by the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Born in 1926 in Coldwater, Mississippi, R.L. Burnside wasa contemporary and protege of the great Mississippi Fred McDowell, the bluesman famous for his statement "I do not play no rock & roll." Burnside, on the other hand, did and does on the surprisingly wonderful A ASS POCKET O' WHISKEY. Burnside is backed here by the punk-influenced avant-blues noisemongers of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. The combination is more credible than some blues purists might imagine. Burnside's distinctively gritty modal blues were an acknowledged influence on Captain Beefheart, and many of these 10 tracks recall nothing quite so much as the Captain's distinctively wild blues experiments-with Spencer's aggro-skronk guitar noises standing in for the Magic Band. Blues classics like John Lee Hooker's "Boogie Chillen" and the '40s broadside "Tojo Told Hitler" sound just fine next to Burnside's idiosyncratic originals. SKU: 3101332

Stevie Wonder's Greatest Hits Vol.2
Personnel includes: Stevie Wonder. Producers: Stevie Wonder, Henry Cosby, Don Hunter, Harvey Fuqua, Johnny Bristol. Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (PolyGram Studios). In 1961, discovered by Ronnie White of the Miracles, he was signed by Berry Gordy of Motown Records. His voice broke in 1964 but he re-emerged in 1965 with a worldwide hit, 'Uptight (Everything's Alright)'. His contract expired in 1971 and Wonder financed two experimental albums, playing almost all instruments. He pioneered the synthesizer's use in black music, and addressed racial and spiritual questions. Where I'm Coming From and Music Of My Mind put him at the forefront of black music. Talking Book (1972) provided hits with 'Superstition' and 'You Are The Sunshine Of My Life'. Innervisions (1973) consolidated his success while Talking Book gave the hits, 'Living For The City' and 'Higher Ground'. Songs In The Key Of Life (1976), perhaps his most ambitious album, displayed musical virtuosity. The highly successful Hotter Than July (1980) included a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, 'Happy Birthday', and a study in reggae, 'Masterblaster(Jamming)'. After Stevie Wonder's Original Musiquarium I (1982), Wonder composed The Woman In Red (1984). It included his biggest-selling single, 'I Just Called To Say I Love You'. In Square Circle (1985) and Characters (1987) returned to accessible melody. Wonder's image as a statesman of black music, and champion of black rights, was boosted by his successful campaign in the 80s to mark the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King with a national holiday. Journeyman
Personnel includes: Eric Clapton, Jerry Williams (vocals, guitar); George Harrison (guitar, background vocals); Robert Cray (guitar); Robbie Kondor (harmonica, keyboards, vocoder, synthesizer, programming); Hank Crawford (alto saxophone); David "Fathead" Newman (tenor saxophone); Ronnie Cuber (baritone saxophone); Jon Faddis, Lou Solof (trumpet); Richard Tee (piano, Fender Rhodes); Greg Phillinganes (piano, keyboards, synthesizer, background vocals); Alan Clark (Hammond organ, synthesizer, keyboards, programming); Gary Burton (vibraphone); Nathan East (bass, background vocals); Daryl Jones (bass); Phil Collins (drums, background vocals) Carol Steele (congas, tambourine, percussion); Chaka Khan (background vocals). Recorded at The Town House, London, England and Power Station, Skyline Studios, New York, New York. As the '80s drew to a close, Clapton's lifestyle included fraternizing with models and wearing designer suits to go with stylish haircuts. Amid all this jet-setting, Clapton released JOURNEYMAN, an album that found his songwriting involvement limited to cuts co-written with Foreigner's Mick Jones ("Bad Love") and Robert Cray ("Old Love"). Respected producer Russ Titelman twisted knobs as a number of famousguests contributed to the creative process. Old friend George Harrison contributed guitar, harmonies and a song ("Run So Far") while Clapton's band from AUGUST (Greg Phillinganes, Nathan East, Phil Collins) are also present. Although the slick production of most of Clapton's '80s work is evident, his passion is far from lacking. "Running On Faith" finds Slowhand looking deep inside himself as a gospel choir chimes away in the background. On Ray Charles' "Hard Times" Clapton reminds listeners that heartache is around the corner. The sweet nothings whispered in "Lead Me On" are made that much sweeter by the harmonies of Cecil and Linda Womack. E.C. also manages to have a ball with a shuffling "Hound Dog" and a rollicking take on Bo Diddley's "Before You Accuse Me." SKU: 1004931

Thirteen
Teenage Fanclub: Norman Blake, Gerard Love, Raymond McGinley, Brendan O'Hare. Additional personnel: Mike Hare (slide guitar); Joseph McAlinden (violin, saxophone); John McCusker (violin); Iain MacDonald (flute). Producer: Teenage Fanclub, Andy MacPherson. Recorded at CaVa Sound Workshops, Glasgow, Scotland and Revolution Studios, Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire, England. THIRTEEN contains 6 bonus tracks not listed on the CD packaging. Teenage Fanclub is one of the best unoriginal bands in pop music. Borrowing heavily (some would say plagiarizing) fromthe Byrds and Big Star, these Scots make beautifully simple--often formulaic--pop textured with lush harmonies and layered, chime-y guitars. Only the most curmudgeonly sort could resist pop this sweet. The Fannies' sweeping, infectious melodies rouse the adolescent rock & roll romantic in us all, evincing visions of summer vacations, cruising with the windows down, and the giddiness that accompanies first love. THIRTEEN is a collection of perfect, shining pop songs, and such tunes as "Hang On" and "Radio" are sublime examples of their kind. One of the group's finest and most cohesive offerings, this disc is further proof of Teenage Fanclub's enduring and irresistible charms. SKU: 1000527

5 [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Joan Baez (vocals, guitar); Gino Foreman (guitar); David Soyer (cello). Includes original release liner notes by Langston Hughes. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Released in 1964, as Joan Baez was cementing her role as the queen of the folk revival and palling around with Bob Dylan, her imaginatively-titled fifth album was a bigger mainstream commercial success than her earlier releases. Opening with a stately cover of Phil Ochs' excellent "There But For Fortune," the album moves effortlessly from the Leadbelly-style folk-blues of "Stewball" to a graceful version of Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" and beyond. Despite Baez's public persona as the doyenne of protest music, most of these 12 songs are basically apolitical, with only the Ochs cover and the anti-segregationist "Birmingham Sunday" packing much political punch. A version of the Brazilian art-folk song "Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5--Aria" shows a welcome openness in Baez's repertoire as well, and theguitar-and-cello arrangements are engaging but not showy. Katy Lied [Remastered]
Cassette available on MCA (1594). NOTES: Steely Dan: Donald Fagen (vocals, piano, keyboards); Walter Becker (guitar, bass). Additional personnel includes: Denny Dias, Rick Derringer, Dean Parks, Elliot Randall, Hugh McCracken, Larry Carlton (guitar); Phil Woods (alto saxophone); Michael Omartian, David Paich (piano, keyboards); Victor Feldman (vibraphone, percussion); Chuck Rainey, Wilton Felder (bass); Jeff Porcaro (drums, dorophone); Hal Blaine (drums); Michael McDonald, Sherlie Matthews, Carolyn Willis, Myrna Matthews (background vocals). Recorded at ABC Recording Studios Inc., Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. In 1975 after an extraordinarily successful run of releases which culminated in that "steely" masterpiece, PRETZEL LOGIC, the Dan shifted direction a bit and opened their music up on KATY LIED. The sound is warmer, the already sophisticated harmonies somewhat richer, a little bit closer to combo jazz. It's as if jazz pianist Bill Evans collaborated with Bob Dylan. KATY LIED contains Steely Dan's most emotional, evenpassionate music up to that point, matched only by the brilliant AJA a few years later. Donald Fagen's acerbic vocals forgoe the double tracking of the previous albums, the sarcasm melting into something close to vulnerability in a song like "Doctor Wu," maybe the greatest single tune Fagen and Becker ever wrote. KATY LIED is also notable for the appearance of vocalist Michael McDonald, whose grainy baritone blends particularly well with Fagen's unique sound. SKU: 1086211

Lost Chance
James Chance & The Contortions: James Chance (vocals, alto saxophone, organ); Jerry Agony, Chris Cunningham (guitar); Colin Wade (bass); Rolphe Rolle (drums); Cherie Marilyn (background vocals). Recorded live at The Misfits Nightclub, Chicago, Illinois in September 1981. The real question about James Chance's sound is not how he thought of it, but why no one thought of it before. The prime architect of downtown NYC punk-funk, Chance (also known as James White), applied the skewed aesthetic of the burgeoning NewYork art-punk/new wave scene to the syncopated rhythms of artists like James Brown. From his carefully crafted hairdo to his vocal exhortations, Chance is like a funhouse-mirror image of Brown. On this representative 1981 live recording, Chance works his exquisitely anguished yelp over funky vamps just off-kilter enough to let you know that LOST CHANCE is more CBGB's than JB's. Adding to the willful dementia is the avant-garde edge provided by Chance's sax and organ work, informed more by free jazz than funk. Chance takes on the Brown legacy head-first on the latter's "I Got You (I Feel Good)," and his manic, punky energy is a surprisingly workable replacement for the Godfather of Soul's funky mastery.
