It is always refreshing to hear a roots-based group perform an original set, and the Jayhawks do not disappoint. TOMORROW THE GREEN GRASS, as indicated by the hopeful title, brings it all back home to simple pleasures, radiant down-home joys and universal fears. It is apparent from the initial acoustic strums that this is an album that concentrates on music, not trends.
This Minnesota-based band combines the high lonesome aspects of bluegrass with the rough-edged, pining soulfulness of Burrito Brothers/Gram Parsons country-rock and the spirit of modern rock. The Jayhawksbind it all together with off-center harmonies, infectiously strong melodies and a powerful narrative sensibility. Whether the subject is suicide, unabashed love, hopelessness, child abuse or the unbridled love the band has for Victoria Williams (who is married to Jayhawk Mark Olson), it is presented with spunk and verve.
Sometimes sounding vaguely R.E.M.-ish, the tracks often portray a pained passion. "I'd Run Away," sung by a sweet voice and featuring synths instead of fiddles, could well pass for a Beatles tune, and the band furnishes it with proper grit and soul. "Miss Williams' Guitar" crashes with waves of shimmering, jangly guitar. And a left-field cover of Grand Funk Railroad's "Bad Time" is a rollicking treasure.
With TOMORROW THE GREEN GRASS, American Recordings has, once again, released a collection of heart-and-soul-felt songs by an American band worth a listen.

After years as Puff Daddy's main protege, Mase exploded to the pinnacle of hip-hop success with the multi-platinum albums HARLEM WORLD (1997) and DOUBLE UP (1999). Then, as swiftly as he achieved that fame, he gave it all up, announcing his retirement from the rap game to enter the ministry. While many wrote it off as a passing fancy, he stuck with it for five years, until his desire to make music could apparently be suppressed no longer, and he emerged with his third record, WELCOME BACK.
On the title track, Mase reworks a line from the classic WELCOME BACK, KOTTER theme song--"the game has all changed since I've been around"--which is impossible to debate in the ever-changing rap world, but Mase himself hasn't changed. He's still the easy-flowing, affable MC he was before the gospel grabbed him. He can still pin a clever rhyme on a catchy hook, as he does by incorporating Madonna's "La Isla Bonita" on "My Harlem Lullaby," or flex his muscles around a tender ballad as on "I Wanna Go." WELCOME BACK may follow five years of silence, but it sounds as if he never left.

If your knowledge of the Human League begins and ends with smoothly commercial hits like "Don't You Want Me" and "Human," get ready for a shock. In the late '70s, the Human League were a much different proposition, an arty synth combo more in line with early Cabaret Voltaire, The Normal or even ThrobbingGristle. Furthermore, singers Susanne Sulley and Joanne Catherall weren't in the band yet, and most of the music was written by Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh, who later left the group to form British Electric Foundation and Heaven 17.
The band's second album, 1980's TRAVELOGUE, opens with a less primitive re-recording of their 1978 debut single, "Being Boiled," and continues in that frequently gloomy vein through oddities like "Black Hit of Space," "Gordon's Gin" and "Toyota City." The results are occasionally ponderous, but surprisingly, this album sounds less dated than many of the Human League's later hits.

One of the things that made the Dead such a unique live act was the sheer variety of their influences. The vastness of the musical terrain they covered is well demonstrated on 1971's GRATEFUL DEAD, nicknamed "Skull & Roses" because of its cover art. It captures the band's live sound at a time when their marathon, acid-inspired concerts were swiftly becoming the stuff of legend and earning them legions of new fans.
This set conveys the typical arc of a Dead show. The band could be economical and straightforward, with brisk, stripped-down numbers like the lilting "Bertha," the straight-forward country of "Me and My Uncle" and Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried," and the country-folk of "Me and Bobby McGee." They could just as easily go into lugubrious album-side-filling improvisations like "The Other One" and pump out loose-limbed, groovy versions '50s rockers like Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" and Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." The set concludes with the laid-back, joyous jam of the traditional "Goin' Down the Road Feelin'Bad." Conspicuous in his absence is singer/keyboardist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, whose alcoholismwas beginning to take its toll.

Over three decades into a highly successful career as an interpreter of other writers' material, Emmylou Harris beats the odds by releasing her second consecutive album of original compositions. She's had plenty of time to learn from the best, and the lessons gained from digging into the work ofwriters like Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen, and Townes Van Zandt can be felt here, even if she can't be expected to equal their mastery. She works again with members of the Spyboy band that helped reinvent Harris's sound on WRECKING BALL, but as on RED DIRT GIRL, the churning, rhythmic feel of the former is underplayed in favor of a gentler, more folkish approach.
Years ago, few could have guessed that one of Harris's most valuable songwriting partners would be a former member of NYC funk-rockers Luscious Jackson, but Jill Cunniff is a worthy weapon in STUMBLE INTO GRACE's arsenal, co-writing the trenchant "Time in Babylon." Other esteemed writing partners include Daniel Lanois, ex-husband Paul Kennerly, and Kate & Anna McGarrigle, but this ultimately feels like a very personal statement straight from the heart of this seasoned artist.

Although the band were known first and foremost as arena rockers by the late '90s, most longtime ZZ Top fans knew that the Texas trio's roots lay in blues, especially evident in the classic early '70s Warner's albums. Yellowman ruled dancehall in the early '80s, scoring hit after hit for producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes. In the years directly following Bob Marley's death, Yellowman almost single-handedly moved reggae music away from The Wailers' blueprint of conscious lyrics, luscious harmonies, and Rasta redemption. Yellowman's new style used taut, hard-edged rhythm tracks and shifted the lyrical emphasis towards sex, comedy, and non-stop boasting.
ZUNGGUZUNGGUGUZUNGGUZENG! is one of the best releases of Yellowman's career, featuring great backing tracks by The Roots Radics and The Hi Times Band, wicked production from Junjo and Errol Thompson, and loads of The Yellow One's patented chats. The title track proved to be one of his most enduringhits, but there are many equally strong tunes here-especially "Who Can Make the Dance Ram," which successfully mixes Sammy Davis Jr. with "Three Blind Mice." This album also proved that Yellowman is more than just a sex-addicted braggart. His rootical lyrics to "Can't Hide From Jah" and "Jah Jah Are We Guiding Star" are some of the most cultural toasts he ever recorded.

Within the space of two short years The Cure mysteriously transformed themselves from a more accessible Wire/Buzzcocks hybrid into the grandiose-haired gloom merchants they still resemble today. While the international success of singles like "Boys Don't Cry" mighthave pointed to a continuation of the same formula, Smith decided to take the band into choppier waters. SEVENTEEN SECONDS marked the start of The Cure Phase II. Somewhat reminiscent of bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees (a group Smith played with for a few albums), SEVENTEEN SECONDS is not an album for the faint at heart.
The addition of perennial favorite Simon Gallup on bass and the short-lived but effective Mathleu Hartley on keyboards expanded the Cure's previously sparse sound, adding layers of texture that complimented Smith's longer, less accessible songs. While "Play for Today" hearkens back to the bands poppier days, "Seventeen Seconds" and "Secrets" show that the band was not about to turn back from its new approach. "A Reflection" is eerily beautiful, but the album's true highlight is the perky but sad "A Forest." Perhaps one of the least-known but most influential records of the early eighties and a sign of things to come down the road.

The Beatles' impact on popular music is inestimable. They changed the face of rock & roll, introducing new concepts and techniques again and again throughout their career, influencing both their contemporaries and the next several generations of rock & roll. In the early '60s, when the golden age of Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis had given way to prefabricated teen idols and bland, diluted versions of real rock & roll and R&B, the Beatles' brash, effervescent blend of '50s vintage sounds and bold, electric pop saved the world.
Not content with reviving rock & roll almost single-handedly, the Beatles continued to innovate. Borrowing a bit from John Lennon's hero Bob Dylan, they pioneered the progression from generic love songs to more personalized, introspective subject matter. Let loose in the studio, they were among the first in the pop world to use backwards tapes, feedback and exotic instrumentation (George Harrison's well-documented love affair with Indian music inspired a thousand sitar-infested pop tunes). Lennon & McCartney (and occasionally Harrison) were phenomenally gifted tunesmiths who merged a pre-rock harmonic vocabulary with R&B influences and a visionary streak to create a timeless body of work.

State of the art (back in 1960 and 1961, respectively) teen idol fodder. WISH UPON A STAR, Dion's final album with the Belmonts, is unsurprisingly the more doo-wop oriented of the two, withits title tune, a Bizarro World version of "Swinging on a Star," and a version of "In the Still of the Night" that doubtless would have puzzled composer Cole Porter.
ALONE, on the other hand, veers between portraying Dion as a sensitive hearththrob in the brilliantly sung and brilliantly exploitive "Lonely Teenager," and as an all-around pop entertainer now grown up enough to sing standards in front of a big swing band, a la Bobby Darin ("North East End of the Street") or string orchestra a la Johnny Mathis ("Fools Rush In").

Whereas Motley Crue's 1981 debut TOO FAST FOR LOVE was glam rock-based (both musically and visually), 1983's now-classic sophomore effort, SHOUT AT THE DEVIL, had more in common with heavy metal. The album served as TheCrue's commercial breakthrough, going double-platinum shortly after it's release (and eventually reaching quadruple-platinum status) and spawning several popular MTV videos. Motley Crue toured behind SHOUT as an opener for Ozzy Osbourne, and the success of the album also helped open the floodgates for the L.A. metal scene.
SHOUT AT THE DEVIL is undoubtedly Motley Crue's all-time best. The set includes anthems galore (the title track, "Looks That Kill," and the melodic "Too Young to Fall in Love"), lesser-known tales of sex, violence, and sin ("Bastard," "Red Hot," "Knock 'Em Dead Kid," "Ten Seconds to Love," "Danger"), and a vicious cover of The Beatles' "Helter Skelter." All the tracks are winners. SHOUT's satanic cover imagery and graphic lyrics drew fire from religious organizations, as did the band's rock mag-fueled hedonistic reputation. Nonetheless, SHOUT AT THE DEVIL remains one of the finest metal albums of the '80s.

An aggressive and unrelenting phone campaign to radio stations for their breakaway single "Kryptonite" snowballed into a showcase at New York's legendary CBGB's and a deal with Universal Records.
