Swing Along With Me
Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra(vocals); Billy May (conductor, arranger). SWING ALONG WITH ME is part of that group of Sinatra recordings driven by the irresistibly swinging, jazzy arrangements of Billy May. A man of no uncertain gifts, May was possessed of the uncanny ability to write horn charts that could simultaneously fuel and tend Sinatra's vocal fire. There's no bittersweet introspection here, instead Sinatra lets loose on a batch of uptempo tunes that allow him to show off his chops. Sure, songs like "Don't Cry Joe" provide relief from the prevailing brisk tempos, but even the relatively placid moments here sparkle with such alacrity that they don't slow the pace. Even when Sinatra's delivering one of the most pessimistic lyrics of his career on the undeservedly obscure "The Curse Of An Aching Heart," he's backed by such an effervescent arrangement that he sounds like he's getting a cathartic thrill out of his tale of woe. Big Thinkin'
Personnel: Dallas Wayne (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric bass); Robbie Fulks (vocals, acoustic guitar); D. Clinton Thompson (electric guitar); Tom Brumley (lap & pedal steel guitars); Dave Wilson (mandolin, fiddle); Joe Terry (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Lou Whitney (electric bass); Bobby Lloyd Hicks (drums). Recorded at The Studio, Springfield, Missouri. Includes liner notes by Dallas Wayne. For fans of alt-country who worship at the altar of indie labels like Bloodshot Records, the big news on this album is the participation of Robbie Fulks, who co-wrote nearly all the songs and handled production chores. For those whose love of country music extends deeper, though, the most striking thing about Dallas Wayne's domestic debut is the way his old-school honky-tonk sensibility meshes with Fulks's postmodern insouciance. Wayne has a big, husky voice capable of massaging even the coldest of hearts, and when he leans it into Fulks's witty lyrics, he excises any callowness. The effect is not unlike that of '70s-vintage singer Moe Bandy's self-aware, humor-tinged take on Nashville bar room blues. Wayne gets equally impressive results when he lends his cavernous baritone to thegentle ballads here. In its combination of Fulks the postmodern wiseacre with Wayne the dyed-in-the-wool honky-tonker, BIG THINKIN' will appeal to country fans of any generation. SKU: 1047337

Taboo
Personnel: Arthur Lyman (vibraphone, marimba, percussion, bird calls); Ethel Azama (vocals); John Kramer (guitar, ukulele, flute, clarinet, bass, percussion, bird calls); Alan Soares (guitar, piano, celeste, percussion); Chew Moon Chang (moon harp, Chinese bamboo flute); Paul Conrad (piano); Harold Chang (xylophone, percussion). Producer: Richard Vaughn. Reissue producer: Tape Dave Greenberg. Includes liner notes by Sven "Tiki" Kirsten. Soon after Tiki combo leader and pianist Martin Denny scored a smash hit with EXOTICA in 1957, his vibraphonist Arthur Lyman, who unlike Denny really was Hawaiian, struck out on his own to ply his wares in the newly lucrative exotica market. Again, unlike Denny, who had a stately and stodgy, even clumsy approach to this material, Lyman possessed a soft and fluent touch on his instrument, a facility reflected in his own combo. Plus, Lyman's virtuosity enabled him to sometimes improvise at something near full speed, close to the pace of a credible jazz player, though he wouldn't win any cutting contests with Milt Jackson. Or he could playfully fool around with themes like the "Colonel Bogey March." Still, the musical concept on TABOO is by no means original (Lyman even lifts Denny's trademark bird calls), but the finer execution makes for truer easy listening, perfect for romantic candlelit dinners under a Hawaiian moon or its approximation right here at home. Princess Diaries, The
This is a Hyper CD which contains regular audio tracks and provides a link to the Disney website with the help of a web browser. The soundtrack to a Disney movie featuring Julie Andrews where the renowned songstress doesn't sing? Sorry mom and dad, the days of THE SOUND OF MUSIC are long gone. THE PRINCESS DIARIES focuses more on Andrews's teenage charge, played by Anne Hathaway. Accordingly, this disc is a trip through the not-so-wide world of teenpop circa 2001. Things kick off with Krystal Harris singing the tune that kicked off her career, "SuperGirl." Aaron Carter provides an interesting variant on the usual teen style with a modernized version of the great '50s R&B tune "Little Bitty Pretty One." The Backstreet Boys chime in with one of their patented heart-on-sleeve romantic ballads, "What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful)," and a perky, synth-driven arrangementpowers Nobody's Angel's insistent, danceable "Always Tomorrow." Ultimately, THE PRINCESS DIARIES can be seen as a teenpop compilation in the guise of a film soundtrack. SKU: 1069085

Dancehall king Beenie Man continues his quest for crossover success with TROPICALSTORM, an outing benefiting from the marketing muscle of Virgin Records and all-star guests drawn from the worlds of R&B, rap and reggae. Among the major names dropping in to mix it up with this Jamaican master are queen bee Lil' Kim and hip-hop producer DJ Clue on the percolating "Fresh From Yard," and Janet Jackson, who sweetens the bubbly "Feel It Boy." Superstar producers The Neptunes also check in to ride the board and pump up the relentless "Bad Girl," along with the infectious "Bossman" featuring reggae brethren Lady Saw and Sean Paul. Other island natives checking in are the So Solid Crew (the jacked-up "Yagga Yo") along with Tanto Metro and Devonte (a soulful "More We Want"). Amid the various talents coming and going on TROPICAL STORM, reggae legends Sly & Robbie stand out thanks to their skilled production hands. A gnarly funk loop defines the stripped down "You Babe" while the anthemic "Party Hard" (which also appears on the BLUE CRUSH soundtrack) features an infectious cadence that earmarks this cut for prime mix tape status. Mezzanine (Limited Edition)
Massive Attack: Mushroom, 3-D, Daddy G. Additional personnel: Horace Andy, Elizabeth Fraser, Sara Jay (vocals); Angelo Bruschini (guitar); Neil Davidge (keyboards, samples); Dave Jenkins, Michael Timothy (keyboards); John Harris, Bob Locke, Winston Blissett (bass); Andy Gangadeen (drums). Recorded at Massive Attack and Christchurch Studios, Bristol, England. What do you do when you've already changed the face of music once in a decade? If you're Bristol, UK sonicarchitects Massive Attack, you refine the model for the times. MEZZANINE, the third album from the producer/DJ crew who, for all intents and purposes, created the genre of trip-hop, is thicker, less spacious and far more guitar-heavy than their previous efforts. Then again, the blue-print remains: hip-hop beats, behemoth bass underpinnings and spare melodic overtones still control Massive Attack's drive. After all, one doesn't expect the inventors to abandon their discoveries just because every pop new jack is onto their gold mine. SKU: 1006639

Too Fast For Love (Expanded) [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include the "Live Wire" video. Motley Crue: Vince Neil (vocals); Mick Mars (guitar, background vocals); Nikki Sixx (bass); Tommy Lee (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Hit City West, Los Angeles, California. Includes interviews conducted by Alan K. Stout. Digitally remastered by Chris Solem (1999, Future Disc). Motley Crue led the early 80's glam metal movement in L.A. Borrowing elements of theatrical arena-rock from Kiss, trashy glam from The New York Dolls, and pop sensibilities from Cheap Trick, the Crue eventually became one of the most popular rock bands of the decade. TOO FAST FORLOVE, the band's debut, was first released independently but was soon remixed and reissued on Elektra. The music and its message may have been simple, but the metal underground immediately took notice of the Crue and its crude debut, and the group broke into the big-time with its next release, SHOUT AT THE DEVIL. "Live Wire," the rocking tale of an unstoppable, violent street thug, sets the tone for TOO FAST, one of Motley Crue's strongest and most consistent releases. "Come On And Dance," "Merry Go Round," "Starry Eyes," and "On With The Show" are melodic hard rock candy, while "Public Enemy #1," "Take Me To the Top," "Piece of Your Action," and the title track are all unruly rockers. The 1999 re-issue of TOO FAST FOR LOVE contains several previously unreleased bonus tracks, including "Stick To Your Guns" and "Toast of the Town." SKU: 1084766

Crusades Of The Restless Knights
Personnel includes: Ray Wylie Hubbard (vocals, acoustic & slide guitar); Lloyd Maines (acoustic & steel guitar, dobro, background vocals); Stephen Bruton (electric & baritone guitar, mandolin); Lisa Mednick (accordion, background vocals); Patty Griffin (background vocals). Recorded at Cedar Creek Studios, Austin, Texas. Warning bells sound when a folk singer straps on an acoustic guitar and harmonica and sets out to write songs about spiritual redemption, yearning, and other heavy matters. Too often, such efforts degenerate into sanctimonious dribbling. But there isn't a single sanctimonious bone in Ray Wylie Hubbard's haggard body. Life has left his bones chipped and battered, yet Hubbard makes no apologies. More importantly, he doesn't offer stifling moral lectures about how his hell raising past led him to his current state. CRUSADES is a rewarding album because Hubbard is able to stir a few slivers of hope into the blackness. His songs are dusty hymns-prayers torn from stained pages. Hubbard is not about to let past demons and present soul-searching overwhelm his mischievous side. "Conversation With The Devil," the album's centerpiece, finds Hubbard knee-deep in Hell and engaged with Satan himself in the most freewheeling verbal sparring any folk singer has ever put to record. It's a knee slapper in the best sense of the word. The echoes of Hubbard's '70s-outlaw image were clearly fading when he began his remarkable artistic resurgence in the early '90s. They are but dim remnants here, pushed aside to giveHubbard room to make such a startling and mature record. SKU: 5050754

Now We Are Six
Additional personnel includes: David Bowie (saxophone). Steeleye Span's sixth album, 1974's NOW WE ARE SIX, is one of the prolific and ever-changing group's most pop-oriented efforts. Not only wasthe album co-produced and mixed by Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, it features a cover of Phil Spector's "To Know Him Is to Love Him" complete with a sax solo by David Bowie! The rest of the album mixes the band's traditional English folk ballads with a heavy rock sound, particularly on "Seven Hundred Elves" and the powerhouse "Thomas the Rhymer." Elsewhere, oddities like the riddling title track and a bizarre but lovable version of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," that features the band's male members singing in childlike falsetto, hint at the humor that permeates all of Steeleye Span's best work. While not the band's poppiest album--that would probably be ALL AROUND MY HAT--NOW WE ARE SIX is a good introduction for rock listeners with minimal exposure to British folk music. SKU: 1045866

From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah
Nirvana: Kurt Cobain (guitar, vocals); Pat Smear (guitar, background vocals); Krist Novoselic (bass); Dave Grohl (drums, background vocals); Chad Channing (drums). Compilation producers: Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl. Recorded live between 1989 and 1994. Includes liner notes by Krist Novoselic. The electric smashes and thrashes compiled on FROM THE MUDDY BANKS OF THE WISHKAH were originally intended as half of a double album; the other half would have been the acoustic show released as MTV UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK. But after Kurt Cobain's death, UNPLUGGED was released on its own, and the task of putting together a live electric disc was put aside fora couple years. Now completed, FROM THE MUDDY BANKS OF THE WISHKAH (named for a river that cuts through Nirvana's hometown, Aberdeen, Washington) serves as a perfect mirror to UNPLUGGED. Where that one offered a recontextualization of Nirvana's oeuvre, this one offers a reaffirmation of the band's raw power. All the elements that made the band a legend are present here: piledriver rhythm section, scabrous guitar work that combines a Neil Young-ish tone with a punk sensibility, and Cobain's anguished, sandpaper vocal delivery. Many of Nirvana's best-known songs are included in versions that double the intensity and aggression (and sometimes the speed) of the original recordings. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" finds the band charging at a pace that suggests its life depends on reaching the end of the song. "Scentless Apprentice" is a raging howl that makes the original version sound like a beer commercial. SKU: 1019601

Results May Vary [PA]
Limp Bizkit: Fred Durst (vocals, guitar); Sam Rivers (guitar, bass); Mike Smith (guitar); John Otto (drums); DJ lethal. Additional personnel: Snoop Dogg (rap vocals). Producers: Terry Date, Fred Durst, Rick Rubin, DJ Lethal From the infamous open-call auditions to the eleventh hour recruitment of former Snot axeman Mike Smith, finding a suitable guitarist toreplace Wes Borland proved to be a daunting task for Limp Bizkit. Pushing off somewhat from their trademark rap-metal model, the songs that comprise RESULTS MAY VARY display a band reaching musically. "Gimme the Mic" carries on the spirit the band found success with on SIGNIFICANT OTHER, but the majority of this latest effort finds frontman Fred Durst and company leaning towards a more melodic and musical stance, both instrumentally and vocally. Nods to contemporaries sneak in on "Eat You Alive" and "Down Another Day," (with a clear Tool influence prevailing), and uber-producer Brendan O'Brien mixes in a crisp, biting production. The lyrics to the classic Who track "Behind Blue Eyes" struck enough of a responsive chord with Durst that he was inspired to cover it, going so far as to add an additional verse. Rap metal may be going the way of the dinosaur, but Limp Bizkit seems to have the staying power to carry on. SKU: 1087322

I Ain't Movin'
Personnel: Des'ree (vocals); Ashley Ingram (guitar, piano, Fender Rhodes, keyboards, bass, drums, programming, background vocals); Jeff Smith (guitar, keyboards, percussion, programming); Peter Lord Moreland (guitar, keyboards); T-Bone Wolk, Prince Sampson, Jimmy Haynes (guitar); Tracy Wormworth (bass); Rocky Bryant (drums); Norman Hedman, Thomas Dianni, Bashiri Johnson, Harry Morgan (percussion); Kevin Clarke, Peter Moshay (programming); Michael Sinclair (background vocals). Producers: Ashley Ingram, Des'ree, V. Jeffrey Smith, Peter Lord Moreland, Mark "Spike" Stent. Engineers include: Peter Moshay, Jeff Smith, Charlie Smith. Des'ree delivers a cool serving of dance, jazz-inflected R&B and pop on I AIN'T MOVIN'. The album is a mature, insightful collection of self-penned songs, with a subtle underlying social agenda. Des'ree can be "bolder, badder, and wiser," but she can also be cool, calm and introspective. The British singer/songwriter gently moves through several stylistic changes. "Little Child," which grieves for the plight of the world's children, boasts a percussive flamenco direction. "Crazy Maze" seemingly identifies Joni Mitchell as a major influence, while the rich, throaty "Feel So High" sounds like Joan Armatrading was an inspiration. The uplifting, yet pragmatic "Living In The City" yields to the inspirational spirituality of "In My Dreams." Throughout, Des'ree's vocals are lushly textured, deep and riveting. There's a loose, funky tranquility to her music; and I AIN'T MOVIN', Des'ree's sophomore album, is further indication that she has a strong career ahead of her. SKU: 1000942

Nu Yorican Soul
Nuyorican Soul: "Little" Louie Vega, Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez. Additional personnel includes: George Benson (vocals, guitar); Jocelyn Brown, India (vocals); Ira Segal (guitar); Anthony Posk, Melvyn Roundtree (violin); Kathleen Carroll (viola); Dave Valentin (flute); David Sanchez (saxophone); Edward Golazewski (baritone saxophone); Charles Sepulveda (trumpet); Richard Swartz (French horn); Steve Turre (trombone); Richard Genovese (bass trombone); Hilton Ruiz (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Eddie Palmieri (piano, synthesizers); Tito Puente (vibraphone, timbales); Vincent Montana Jr. (vibraphone); Gene Perez (bass); Tony Cintron (drums); Richie Flores (congas, bongos, percussion); Bobby Allende (congas, percussion); Jazzy Jeff (scratches). Producers: 'Little' Louie Vega, Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez. Engineers: Steve Barkan, Dave Darlington. Recorded at Bass Hit Recording, Sound Track Group, Axis Studios, Sound On Sound, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Carol Cooper. "Little" Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez, the duo who collaborate as the Masters At Work production team and are the musical guides for NUYORICAN SOUL have made a career out of pollinating dance floors with funky sounds for nearly two decades. Funk, jazz, house, R&B, hip-hop and a slew of Afro-Latin-scented rhythms are just some of the ingredients in their clubland stew, and their ability to consistently move the crowd is the chief reason the two have long thrived as DJs and producer on both sides of the Atlantic. Jazzy improv is at the heart of all the tracks, whether on the pure around-the-horn solo spotlights handed out to TitoPuente's all-star ensemble ("MAW Latin Blues"), in George Benson's guitar-vocal interplay ("You Can Do It"), or with Roy Ayers running his vibes all around a funky house beat ("Sweet Tears"). Jocelyn Brown brings diva flair to the psychedelic trip-hop of "I Am The Black God of the Sun," and the pure disco of India's "Runaway" breaks down into a sort of Philly Soul dub. NUYORICAN SOUL is dance music that sets a challenge for both the butt and the mind, just like George Clinton said it should. SKU: 4115540

Crazysexycool
TLC: Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Sean "Puffy" Combs (spoken vocals); Chucky Thompson, Dallas Austin (various instruments); Shorty B, Craig Love (guitar); Martin Terry (acoustic & electric guitar); Jerry Lloyd, Charles Nix (horns); Arnold Hennings (keyboards, drums); Sir Dean Gant, Tim Kelley (keyboards); Kenneth Wright (Wurlitzer keyboard); Jon-John (synthesizer, drum programming); Carlos Glover, LaMarquis "Marq" Jefferson (bass); Organized Noize (programming); Sol Messiah (DJ); Bebe, Thomas "Cee-Lo" Burton, Jermaine Dupree (background vocals). Producers include: Dallas Austin, Jermaine Dupri, Babyface, Chucky Thompson, Organized Noize. Engineers include: Jermaine Dupri, Alvin Speights, Leslie Brathwaite. CRAZYSEXYCOOL won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, and "Creep" won a 1996 Grammy for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Creep" and "Red Light Special" were both nominated for Best R&B Song; "Waterfalls" was nominated for Record Of The Year and for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The elements that had this precocious trio's debut album blasting out of playgrounds, top 40 radio stations and even rock critics' Walkmans are still here--infectious dance grooves, pop melodies and sassy raps that put '90s feminism into action. But CRAZYSEXYCOOL also launches TLC from girlhood into youngwomanhood, with, on one hand, Janet Jackson-esquepaens to sex ("Let's Do It Again") and, on the other, melodically downbeat ghetto ballads ("Waterfalls") that recall Stevie Wonder as a young man. The scratchy world-weariness of the lead vocal in "Waterfalls" is one of several nods to classic soul singing. "Case Of The Fake People," written by Dallas Austin, alludes to the O'Jays' "Backstabbers," and "If I Was Your Girlfriend" is a cover of Prince at his most sincere (oddly unreversing his role reversal). And the single "Creep" is a "Dark End Of The Street" for the '90s, a cheating song that walks a tightrope between young love and revenge. SKU: 1004828
