Brazilification (Remixes By Fila Brazilia 1995-1999)
BRAZILIFICATION is a collection of remixes. All lovers of great music--dance or otherwise--should be well acquainted with Fila Brazillia's incredible catalog of leftfield dance albums. Yet that's merely half of the Fila saga. Steve Cobby and Dave McSherry are also ace remixologists. The double-disc BRAZILIFICATION collects the cream of the Fila remixes that have graced elusive singles over the years. Trainspotters can finally relax and rejoice. BRAZILIFICATION's lineup reveals an all-star affair: Radiohead, U.N.K.L.E., Simple Minds, The Orb, Moloko, DJ Food, Black Uhuru, and Freakpower (otherwise known as Fatboy Slim) are among the lucky recipients of fabulous, Fila-style makeovers. When a distinctive vocal performance is at the heart of a track (Radiohead, Lamb, Phosphorus, Moloko), the boys from Brazillia tailor their dub-deep groove treatment to tastefully accentuate. The instrumental material allows Fila that much more elbow room to indulge in jazz acrobatics, synth shenanigans, and bouncy beat-freakery. In either mode, the remixes bring out the best in both Fila Brazillia and the musicians. Packing more than two hours of superlative groovemusic, BRAZILIFICATION is as fine a portable dance party as you're ever likely tofind. SKU: 6431632

Eudora
EUDORA features trackspreviously available only as vinyl B-sides, imports or on various artist compilations. Get Up Kids: Matthew Pryor, Jim Suptic (vocals, guitar); James Dewees (keyboards, background vocals); Rob Pope (bass); Ryan Pope (drums). Producers include: Alex Brahl, The Get Up Kids, Chad Blinman, Ed Rose, A.J. Mogis. Compilation producers: Ed Rose, The Get Up Kids, James Tweedy. Engineers include: Alex Brahl, Chad Blinman, Dale Lawton. Recorded between March 1996 and September 2000. In the communal world of indie-rock, between split singles, compilations, and the odd live favorite, the truly tenacious band can amass an overwhelming surfeit of residual rock. Kansas City's Get Up Kids are a prime example; over just a couple of albums and an equal number of EPs, the foursome racked up an inordinate number of such tracks up to 2001. Far from being mere byproduct, the covers, random tracks, and alternative versions collected on EUDORA are some of the most interesting work of one of the more intelligent bands balancing on that edge between pop and punk. While covers are the staple diet of punk bands, the Get Up Kids don't merely belt out over-caffienated versions of their favorite songs, but subtly restructure classics by everyone from the Pixies to Motley Crue to David Bowie with both novel tweaks and unwavering reverence. Take their reworking of New Order's 1992 top 40 tune "Regret;" heartfelt, forsaking the irony some in the genre might imbue in a pop hit by new wavers, while finding the passion in the words of a surprisingly striking and forlorn tune. Mixed with originals, particularly the lush reworking, replete with cello, of "Newfound Mass," EUDORA is one of the better B-sides collections. SKU: 1069784

Seal
Personnelincludes: Seal (vocals); Gus Isidore, Jamie Muhoberac, Bill Benham, Mike Brittain, Nick Busch, Laurence Cottle, Ben Cruft, Mike De Saulles, Charley Drayton, Andy Duncan, Joseph "Amp" Fiddler, Roger Garland, Luis Jardim, Pat Kiernan, Chris Laurence, Martin Loveday, Mark Mann, Harvey Mason, Perry Montague-Mason, Andy Newmark, William Orbit, Pino Palladino, Anthony Pleeth, Maciej Rakowski, Eddie Roberts, Jackie Shave, Roger Smith, Tony Stanton, Ian Thomas. Engineers: Tim Weidner, Carmen Rizzo, Steve Fitzmaurice, Steve MacMillan, Gregg Jackman, Robin Barclay, Paul Wright, Sean Chenery. Includes liner notes by Seal. All songs written or co-written by Seal. "Prayer For The Dying" was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male. SEAL was nominated for Best Pop Album and Best Engineered Album. "Kiss From A Rose" won 1996 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. British native Sealhenry Samuel is a tall, strikingly handsome son of Nigerian/Brazilian lineage, with a richly evocative voice that at times suggests the milieu of great song stylists such as Marvin Gaye, Peter Gabriel and Milton Nascimento. SEAL is decidedly sexy yet never descends into the ooh-baby smarminess so prevalent on top of the R&B charts; it is boldly eclectic yet never loses its tight, poppy stylistic focus; and it exudes real spiritual warmth without becoming sappy or preachy. Together with producer Trevor Horn (Art Of Noise, Rod Stewart, Yes), Seal has created a spacious sonic canvas that is as big and exotic as the singer himself, a colorful mixture of moods with a classic touch. On "Prayer For The Dying," Seal celebrates the ongoing dance between the living and the dead from both points of view, seeing it all as part of the natural order of things--not strictly tragic. On "Dreaming In Metaphors" he enunciates another personal journey of faith, and wonders aloud why we "Try to hold onto something we couldn't understand." On "Fast Changes," he mixes and matches folk, jazz and Indian sensibilities in an acoustic guitar flavored love song that recalls the Joni Mitchell of HEJIRA. Joni returns the favor by harmonizing with Seal on the hymn-like changes of "If I Could," the langour of the arrangement standing in stark contrast to the pleas of lovers drifting apart. All in all, SEAL is a vibrant, original vision of pop that should propel Seal to international superstardom. SKU: 1003121

Compilation producers: Bill Levenson, Jerry Rappaport. Engineers include: Bob Potter, Don Wershba, Joe Ferla. Includes liner notes by Ann Powers. Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves. Who could have predicted in the '60s that Marianne Faithfull, at the time Mick Jagger's beautiful and scandalous actress girlfriend, would one day emerge as our greatest interpretive singer? Theevidence can be heard on this extensive two-disc retrospective. It covers the period from Faithfull's 1979 comeback BROKEN ENGLISH--which reintroduced a confidently gritty singer thoroughly rooted in folk and rock--to A SECRET AFTERNOON, a spooky 1995 collaboration with film composer Angelo Badalamenti. It was 1987's Hal Willner-produced STRANGE WEATHER that finally showcased Faithfull's versatility as a singer, featuring originals by Tom Waits and Doc Pomus, Jerome Kern's "Yesterdays" plus an older and wiser reprise of her '60s hit "As Tears Go By." The second disc of this set is rife with previously unreleased material from the Willner years, including an updated version of the Billie Holiday suicide dirge "Gloomy Sunday." Faithfull's subsequent involvement with the songs of Kurt Weill (SEVEN DEADLY SINS) also invites an inevitable (and favorable) comparison with another 2Oth century singer of "experience," Lotte Lenya. We're A Happy Family (A Tribute To The Ramones/Limited Edition) [Digipak]
Contains 3 untitled tracks and the hidden titled track "Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World" following "Daytime Dilemma (Dangers Of Love)." Compilation producers: Johnny Ramone, Rob Zombie. Includes a booklet with color photos and liner notes by Stephen King. Finally arriving two years after Joey Ramone's death, WE'RE A HAPPY FAMILY enlists some of rock's biggest names to participate in giving this Forest Hills outfit its due. Not surprisingly, out of this impressive roll call of artists, the California contingent of third-generation punks come the closest to tapping into the amphetamine tempo of the original songs. Green Day rips through "Outsider," Rancid spits out a killer version of "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker," and Offspring's Dexter Holland is practically a vocal doppelganger of Joey on "I Wanna Be Sedated." Other cuts by bigger names take a different creative path. Marilyn Manson pours ethereal, goth-soaked nuance into "The KKK Took My Baby Away," Bono tosses out a well-mannered vocal on "Beat On The Brat," and Tom Waits pulls out a T.Rex-meets-Leadbelly "Return of Jackie & Judie." Kiss uses horns and screaming guitar to make "Do You Remember Rock 'N' Roll Radio" an infectious stomper, the Red Hot Chili Peppers make "Havana Affair" resonate with melodic rhythm guitar, and Eddie Vedderand Zeke rage through "I Believe In Miracles." Excellent liner notes by Stephen King make WE'RE A HAPPY FAMILY a keeper. Gabba Gabba Hey! SKU: 1080509

Decade Of Aggression (Live)
DISC 1 was recorded live at Lakeland Coliseum, Lakeland, Florida on July 13, 1991. DISC 2 was recorded live at Wembley Arena, London on October 14, 1990, and at Orange Pavilion, San Bernadino, California, March 8, 1991. From the first note of this two-disc live set, you know you're in for one hell of a ride (pun intended). From the classic metal of "Die by the Sword" to the demonic horror-movie music of "Dead Skin Mask," and the all-out stampede that is "Angel of Death," Slayer exposes its hungry fans to a huge helping of the best from its first 10 years. The band members' maturation as musicians to their current status as leaders of the flourishing heavy metal world is well represented here, with tracks hailing from the early SHOW NOMERCY to their most recent effort at the time of this release, SEASONS IN THE ABYSS. Slayer's raw, grinding, fiercely controlled guitar work, supported by speedy, thundering drums, is the prototype for many newer bands. It's hard to imagine a heavy metal world without Slayer, a fact that this disc, screaming crowd included, makes plain. SKU: 1071412

Resident Alien
Spacehog: Royston Langdon (vocals, bass, Moog, Hammond B-3, synthesizer); Antony Langdon (guitar, vocals, synthesizer, Hammond B-3, Moog); Richard Steel (guitar); Jonny Cragg (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Sean (background vocals). Recorded at Bearsville Studios, New York. All songs written or co-written by Antony Langdon and/or Royston Langdon. There's no denying the strong influence of '70's glam rockers like David Bowie and T. Rex on RESIDENT ALIEN. A few songs, like "Starside," sound uncannily like early Bowie, complete with spaceship sound effects. However, Spacehog goes far beyond just retro appeal, partly because of their refusal to take themselves seriously. Even their most hostile, snarling lyrics are bursting with wit, and the glittery surface of their music is simply the slick icing on top of a substantial cake made of gritty, rocking guitar and solid drum work. The icing includes Royston Langdon's theatrical vocals and strutting, stylish songwriting, which includes tongue-in-cheek lyrics like"So if you raise a glass/To love you passed/Raise a glass to me" (from "Shipwrecked"). Spacehog enjoys this kind of melodramatic posing, both in their lyrics and in their music, but they don't lose track of a song's dynamics, and their strong sense of timing lends a sharp edge to each track, never allowing its essence to get lost in the zealous glitter. Wedding Planner, The
Original score composed by Mervyn Warren. Director Adam Shankman conceived this Jennifer Lopez/Matthew McConaughey vehicle as an old-fashioned romantic musical comedy in the spirit of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. (Interesting historical note: this is probably the only album ever made that includes--or will include--the phrase "This album does not include a Jennifer Lopez recording" on its back cover). This commercially cannymix of contemporary pop stylings features Sister Hazel's post-Hootie "We'll Find It," alt-rock/hip-hop fusion in the form of Jessica Riddle's "Symphony," with its sample of Jean Knight's "Mr. Big Stuff," R&B balladry (the Goffin-King obscurity "Somewhere My Baby Waits for Me," sung soulfully by Lisa Stansfield), and sentimental '70s pop hits such as John Denver's "Annie's Song" and Olivia Newton John's "I Honestly Love You." There are also a few selections from Mervyn Warren's original film score, the most memorable of which is "Mary and Steve's Tango," heard during the picture's big Lopez/McConaughey dance scene. Split [Remastered]
The Groundhogs: Tony McPhee (vocals, guitar); Pete Cruickshank (bass); Ken Pustelnik (drums). Recorded at De Lane Lea Studios, London, England in November 1970. Always a bit unfashionable, Tony TS McPhee and his Groundhogs made a number of albums in the late 60's that succeeded purely on their instrumental ability. After the aptly named BLUES OBITUARY album, they moved on to guitar prog. SPLIT was a huge success; the opus-like length and popularity at live gigs guaranteed a good sale to fans. This spread as word of mouth went around that McPhee was an "amazing guitar." In reality he was, and is, pretty nifty: he used his wah-wah in all the right places in 1971. The reissued CD from BGOcontains the fascinating hallucinatory tale behind "Split," and explains just what it is all about. SKU: 1084574

Greatest Hits [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Pete Seeger (vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo). Producer: John Hammond. Compialtion producer: Lawrence Cohn. Recorded between April 28, 1962 and March 22, 1967. Includes liner notes by Pete Seeger and Arthur Levy. All tracks have been digitally remastered. As a solo performer and with his band the Weavers, Pete Seeger had many big hits from the late '40s through the early '60s, by which time he was attracting more attention for his social activism than he was for his music. The 12-track GREATEST HITS collects Seeger's most popular tunes, and in so doing emphasizes his musical strengths over his political beliefs, though there's undeniable social commentary to be found in the suburbia satire "Little Boxes," the anti-war ballad "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," and the union anthem "Which Side Are You On." Other highlights include the original versions of "Turn! Turn! Turn!" and "The Bells of Rhymney," both later popularized by the Byrds, and "Wimoweh," which the Tokens later adapted into the pop hit "TheLion Sleeps Tonight." SKU: 1073330

Lucky Town
Personnel: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, various instruments); Ian McLagen (Hammond organ); Roy Bittan (keyboards); Randy Jackson (bass); Gary Mallabar (drums); Patti Scialfa, Lisa Lowell, Soozie Tyrell (background vocals); Roy Bittan. Producers: Bruce Springsteen, JonLandau, Chuck Plotkin, Roy Bittan. Recorded at Thrill Hill Recording, Los Angeles, California. After a five year recording hiatus following the emotionally eloquent TUNNEL OF LOVE (and a subsequent world tour), Springsteen returned in 1992 with the tandem release of HUMAN TOUCH and LUCKY TOWN. Though released separately, both albums signalled the singer's more mature preoccupation with introspective, complicated themes of desire, despair and regret. The albums were also Springsteen's first without the full E Street Band. HUMAN TOUCH and LUCKY TOWN marry Springsteen's popular persona of fist-waving, stadium rocker with the more reflective, rootsier sound the singer favored on NEBRASKA. LUCKY TOWN's "Better Days" is Springsteen's forthright contemplation of his contradictory status as a multi-millionaire, working class hero. The slight Nashville lilt of "If I Should Fall Behind" is reminiscent of the sentimental balladry on BORN IN THE USA and "Leap of Faith" is a keening, raspy return to the Springsteen of anthemic yore. HUMAN TOUCH and LUCKY TOWN may never be revered in same way as some of his other releases, but both albums are immensely satisfying as a double shot farewell to the raucous rebelliousness of Springsteen's youthful rock and roll years. In Through The Out Door
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); John Paul Jones (synthesizer, bass); John Bonham (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. In the face of England's punk revolution, Led Zeppelin's last studio album simultaneously showed the musical might the quartet still wielded and the creative progression being made before John Bonham's accidental death. Recorded in Abba's Swedish studio, the eight songs comprising IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR ebb and flow through a variety of stylistic shadings. John Paul Jones' use of keyboards gilds the songs and give each a unique twist without drastically altering the band's overall sound. The ominous synthesizer intro of "In The Evening" eventually gives wayto some of Jimmy Page's more ethereal playing, while in "Carouselambra," the synth drives the tempo of this ten minute-plus epic. Led Zeppelin convincingly swings on "South Bound Suarez" and shows its range with "Hot Dog," a hoe-down that could have gotten the band a gig at The Grand Ole Opry. The last two songs, "All My Love" and "I'm Gonna Crawl" are showcases for some of Robert Plant's most passionate singing, equalled only by the pleading tone of Jimmy Page's guitar. SKU: 1084123

Til Shiloh [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Buju Banton, Wayne Wonder, Garnett Silk (vocals); Danny Browne, Firehouse Crew, Mafia, Fluxy (various instruments); Glen Browne (acoustic guitar); Lloyd Willis (guitar, keyboards); Dalton Browne (guitar); Dean Fraser (saxophone); Junior Chin (trumpet); Handel Tucker (keyboards, drums); Junior "Left Toe" Don (bass); Sly Dunbar (drums); Two Friends Crew, Marcia Griffiths, Twiggy (background vocals). Producers include: Bobby Digital, Buju Banton, Cell Block Crew, Donovan Germain, Steely. Reissue producer: Dana G. Smart. Recorded at Studio 2000, Digital, Penthouse, Cell Block Studios, Kingston, Jamaica in 1995. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Island Records "Reggae Classics" series. It was not pure ego that led Buju Banton to title his 1993 album VOICE OF JAMAICA; his unique voice is a gruff, melodic instrument, and his lyrics are precise. He built his career on controversial hits and slacker anthems, but has since helped spearhead a movement to swing reggae's pendulum away from sex and violence, back towards conscious lyrics and Rastafarian themes. On `TIL SHILOH, the voice of Jamaica has visibly evolved. Still, don't let all this consciousness talk scare you; Buju's strength is his ability to create hooks that buoy the weight of his words. The choruses of singles like "Murderer," "I Wanna Be Loved" and "Champion" drill themselves into your head and nest there for days. 'TIL SHILOH is also one of the most experimental dancehall releases ever, utilizing an a capella intro, a track built out of African chanting and percussion ("'Til I'm Laid To Rest"), and a song featuring an acoustic guitar ("Untold Stories"). A duet with the late Garnett Silk ("Complaint") provides a nice respite from Banton's trademark growl. For the most part, Buju and executive producer Donovan Germain steer clear of pandering to cross-over audiences, choosing instead to rely on innovative rhythms and Banton's natural pop sensibilities to win over listeners. While Buju may not yet be ready to inherit Silk's "Next Marley" tag, 'TIL SHILOH is without a doubt the most roots-oriented dancehall release of 1995. And if Banton continues to revitalize reggae's sound and vision, it will not seem strange to mention him one day with the same reverencereserved for Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Burning Spear. Hittin' The Note
Allman Brothers Band: Gregg Allman (vocals, piano, Clavinet, Hammond B-3 organ); Warren Haynes (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Derek Trucks (acoustic & electric guitars); Oteil Burbridge (bass); Butch Trucks, Jaimoe (drums); Marc Quinones (congas, percussion). Recorded at water Music Studios, Hoboken, New Jersey. 34 years down the line, the Allman Brothers Band shows why they've managed to remain a top concert draw and a vital musical presence. Even a cursory listen to HITTIN' THE NOTE reveals that the band never abandoned the agreeable blend of blues, rock, and country that earned them so much attention from the outset. Original guitarists Dickey Betts and Duane Allman arelong gone, of course, but singer/keyboardist Greg Allman and drummers Butch Trucks and Jaimoe are still on hand from the original lineup, providing a strong musical through line. The guitar team of Warren Haynes and young Derek Trucks (Butch's nephew) tears it up in a properly bluesy fashion throughout. Whether they're tackling an acoustic-based, country-tinged ballad like "Old Before My Time," a simmering slow blues with "Desdemona," or strutting their polyrhythmic stuff on "Rockin' Horse," it's clear that this is a band that has followed its musical vision without wavering, and the depth of its commitment is palpable on the aptly titled HITTIN' THE NOTE. Astro Creep
Full title: Astro-Creep 2000: Songs Of Love, Destruction And Other Synthetic Delusions Of The Electric Head. White Zombie: Rob Zombie (vocals); J. (guitar); Sean Yseult (bass); John Tempesta (drums). Additional personnel: Charlie Clouser (programming, keyboards). All music written by White Zombie. All lyrics written by Rob Zombie. Recorded at NRG. "More Human Than Human" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Singer Rob Zombie and his cohorts in White Zombie realize that the greatest and most intense horrors stem from simple and innocent sources. And that musical virtuosity plays little or no part in conveying the feelings of dread that the band specializes in. So rather than revel in extended solos, or write complex musical passages like most successful bands in the post-modern metal community, White Zombie achieve the desired effect (emotionally tweaking the listener) by concentrating on the little things: opening the heavy dirge of "Grease Paint And Monkey Brains" with an out of tune merry-go-round theme that slows down to a halt, or adding an eerie church organ to the full-on throttle of "Electric Head Pt. 1 (The Agony)." You know, real cool, B-grade horror movie-type stuff. White Zombie have long existed in that particular, aesthetic corner of the pop culture universe. But on ASTRO-CREEP 2000, the band embraces programming, samples and other effects as never before, placing the "future" emphasis of the title directly into the music. The more technologically advanced noises also make White Zombie sound faster, leaner, meaner--a laser-gun of angst-ridden heaviness, instead of the usual cannon. Just listen to the background voice loop on "Electric Head Pt. 2 (The Ecstasy)," driving the band with the techno mantra of "Go! Go! Go!" It's a moment indicative of much of ASTRO-CREEP 2000--taking the band's established themes and tempos, and placing them on the electronic super-highwayto hell. SKU: 3102250
