Bennett Sings The Blues (Playing With My Friends)
Personnel includes: Tony Bennett (vocals); B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt (vocals, guitar); Stevie Wonder (vocals, harmonica);Diana Krall, Sheryl Crow, Ray Charles, k.d. lang, Kay Starr, Billy Joel, Natalie Cole (vocals). The Ralph Sharon Quartet: Ralph Sharon (piano); Gray Sargent (guitar); Paul Langosch (bass); Clayton Cameron (drums). Recorded in Los Angeles, California and New York, New York. PLAYIN' WITH MY FRIENDS won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. "New York State Of Mind" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. PLAYIN' WITH MY FRIENDS finds Tony Bennett mixing it up with a broad range of musical veterans and a sprinkling of young turks on this collection whose material primarily draws from the late '40s/early '50s era when the lines between jazz, blues, and pop were blurred. Backed by the stalwarts of the Ralph Sharon quartet, Bennett's easy-going style conjures up an earlier era's definition of cool. The Astoria native takes on the trappings of a saloon singer whether he's flirting with Diana Krall on "Alright, Okay, You Win," commiserating with Ray Charles on the heavy-hearted "Evenin'," or flying solo on Jimmy Rushing's "Undecided Blues". Other collaborators who fare well are Billy Joel (the consistently endearing "New York State Of Mind") and fellow vocal great Kay Starr (a simmering take on Basie's "Blue And Sentimental"). Even when Bennett cuts loose, it's in a cool and collected manner that goes down easy like sipping whiskey. Louis Jordan's "Let The Good Times Roll" comfortably bounces along as fellow septuagenarian B.B. King squeezes off bluesy guitar riffs, and even the normally raucous Robert Cray-penned title track politely chugs along as Bennett's duet guests take turns stepping up to the mike. SKU: 1067415

Risotto
Fluke are the misfits of prescient big-beat, caught unawares between a public consciousness enamored with the likes of Fatboy Slim, the Chemical Brothers and their attendant media blitz. It's too bad. The bastard cousins of diminished capacity industrial forebears such as Front 242, Fluke, conquerors of the U.K., haven't been able to get arrested in the U.S. That is, not until the release of RISOTTO and it's accompanying signature tune, "Atom Bomb." "Atom Bomb" is a visceral ammunitions depot set ablaze in a cloud of sequencers and electronic attitude. It places the electronic body movement that swept the other side of the pond in cahoots with contemporary electronica.Fluke are more than just a sum of their 1980s influences. The nine-plus minute "Kitten Moon" is an exercise in power tool electronics set on slower revolutions per minute, kept afloat on a bed of surging synth gyrations and bass-heavy magma. Fluke's anonymity vanished once this meddlesome recording held court on listening stations nationwide. SKU: 1004959

Rainbow Man
Personnel includes: Jeff Bates (vocals, guitar); Larry Beaird, B. James Lowry, John D. Willis (acoustic guitar); David Grisson, Jeff King, Troy Lancaster, Michael Landau, Jimmy Yeary (electric guitar); Mike Brignardello, Kevin Grantt, Glenn Worf (bass); Lonnie Wilson (drums, tambourine); Eric Darken (percussion). Producers: Kenny Beard, ScottHendricks, David Malloy. In the late '90s and early '00s, the country charts saw a rash of successful artists who celebrated their urban and suburban backgrounds. Bucking the trend and recalling the proudly hillbilly legends of years past, Jeff Bates is possessed of a biography seemingly tailor-made to inspire classic country music. The rural Mississippi-bred singer, whose deep, rich baritone often sounds like a wedding of the vocal styles and timbres of George Jones, Charlie Rich, and Tony Joe White, has suffered though abandonment, divorce, prison, racial prejudice (Bates is of mixed heritage), and drug addiction. Luckily, Bates has been able to turn all his misfortune into autobiographical songs that resonate with a welcome directness and obvious sincerity. However interesting his lyrics may be, his ace in the hole is his voice, the sheer power and resonance of which easily stand toe to toe with the golden pipes of stylistically similar superstars like Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, and Travis Tritt. Matched with a tasteful mix of old- and new-school production values, that voice makes RAINBOW MAN a significant addition to the new traditionalist canon. SKU: 1084573

Late Night Final
Personnel includes: Richard Hawley (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano, organ, glockenspiel, drums, Theremin); Shez Sheridan (guitar, lap steel guitar); Liz Lipscombe (violin); Liz Hanks (cello); Simon Stafford (keyboards); Colin Elliot (acoustic & electric basses); Andy Cook (drums); Saskia Cocker (background vocals). Producers include: Richard Hawley, Colin Elliot, Alan Smyth. Recorded at YellowArch, 2 Fly, Priority Studios, Sheffield, England. Richard Hawley may have been best known as a guitarist for the likes of Beth Orton, Pulp, and others, but his first solo album LATE NIGHT FINAL firmly establishes his identity as a compelling singer/songwriter. Much of the album is occupied by dark, moody, late-night tracks where Hawley's Scott Walker-meets-Tindersticks voice hangs languorously over spare but elegant arrangements. Despite his downcast cabaret tendencies, though, Hawley is a popster at heart, and a number of songs here could very conceivably have been recorded 30 years ago by the likes of Harry Nilsson or Glen Campbell in that golden age of US pop radio. Hawley's songs are unburdened by overworked metaphor, instead relying on simple, evocative images to paint pictures of loss, despondency, and the occasional romantic ray of hope shining through the dimness. Songs From An American Movie Vol.1 (Learning How To Smile)
Full title: Songs From An American Movie Vol. 1: Learning How To Smile. Everclear:Art Alexakis (vocals, electric & steel guitars, banjo, percussion); Greg Eklund (vocals, ukelele, drums, percussion, bells); Craig Montoya (mandolin, bass, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Richard Altenbach, Vage Ayrikyan, Bette B. Byers, Frank Capp, Matthew Cooker, Wade Cullbreth, Cathrine Del Russo, Louise Ditullio, Bruce Dukov, Steve C. Durnin, John C. Eidsvoog, Arme Garbedian, James Hughart, Patricia Johnson (strings); Brandon Fields (saxophone); Greg Adams, Chuck Findley (trumpet); Nick Lane (trombone); James Beaton (piano, harmonium, organ, synthesizer); Lars Fox (percussion, loops, background vocals); Kendall Payne, Andrew Stevens, Erica Stewart-Giuhan, Sydnne Ebong (background vocals). Producers: A.P. Alexakis, Lars Fox, Neal Avron. Over its first three albums, the West Coast band Everclear provided consistent, fairly simple, breezy, catchy, modern rock with relatively few frills. On SONGS FOR AN AMERICAN MOVIE VOL. 1, the threesome, fronted by the outspoken, charismatic Art Alexakis, suddenly finds frills galore. The album opens on a country note with the short, soft ballad title track, before kicking into a zippy, hip-hop flavored "Here We Go Again," replete with Chuck D samples. "AM Radio" uses Jean Knight's 1971 classic "Mr. Big Stuff" to back an infectious exploration of late night radio listening long before the advent of MTV, followed by an almost breakbeat-meets-Celtic folk re-working of Van Morrison's classic "Brown-Eyed Girl." "Unemployed Boyfriend" and leadoff single "Wonderful," reminiscent in both flavor and theme to SO MUCH FOR THE AFTERGLOW's "Father of Mine," are closest to Everclear's traditional sound, while "Otis Redding," a sweet, retro power ballad, stands out as one of the most sincere and sublimely lovely songs the band has created. SONGS FOR AN AMERICAN MOVIE, VOL. 1 finds Everclear experimenting as much as ever with satisfying results. SKU: 1039603

Rule 3:36 [PA]
Personnel includes: Ja Rule (rap vocals); Christina Milian, Vita, 01, Tah Murdah, Black Child. Producers include: Lil' Rob, Tru Stylze, Irv Gotti, Da Mizza, Self for Self. "Put It On Me" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. Ja Rule is destined for stardom. After selling over a million copies of his debut album VENNI VETTI VECCI on the strength of one hitsingle ("Holla Holla"), and landing a major role in a Coca Cola campaign, it's no surprise that his sophomore album RULE 3:36 followed so quickly on the former's heels. RULE 3:36 is as solid as Ja Rule's first release. Produced by Murder Inc., the tracks vary from pop-influenced R&B to hardcore rap, so there's a little something for everybody. "Between Me and You" and "Put it on Me" are lighter, summery-sounding jams that will put bodies on the dance floor, but Ja Rule proves he's also got the rhymes to hang with the big dogs, on songs such as "Love Me Hate Me" and "6 Feet Underground." When Angels Speak Of Love
Sun Ra And His Myth Science Arkestra: Sun Ra (piano, Clavioline, gong); Marshall Allen (alto saxophone, oboe, percussion); Danny Davis (alto saxophone, percussion);John Gilmore (tenor saxophone, percussion); Pat Patrick (baritone saxophone, percussion); Robert Cummings (bass clarinet); Walter Miller (trumpet); Ronnie Boykins (bass); Clifford Jarvis (drums); Thomas "Bugs" Hunter (percussion). Recorded at The Choreographers Workshop, New York, New York in 1963. Originally released on (Saturn 1966). Includes liner notes by John Corbett and Natel Juni. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Sun Ra's prodigious output encompassed everything from high-octane swings and stomps to tribal chants, rhythmic tapestries, and open-ended tone poems. This album, comprised of sessions recorded in 1963, was originally released on Ra's own Saturn label, and impossible to find until its reissue on CD in 2000. This set opens with a nearly six-minute-long fanfare: Marshall Allen's oboe and Walter Miller's trumpet are manipulated with tape delay by recording engineer (and Arkestra percussionist) Tommy "Bugs" Hunter, creating a sonic realm that's nicely captured in the title it was given, "Celestial Fantasy." This is followed by "The Idea Of It All," a gracefully propulsive work layered with Ra's angular chords and cascading horn lines. The title piece is a simple ballad softly rendered, as if fractured through a prism of color. The album has a clear identity of its own, as it mixes Sun Ra's compositions and scoring with a communal/interplanetary sensibility and a glorious handful of impassioned soloists. SKU: 1044937

Point (From Nakameguro To Everywhere)
Cornelius: Keigo "Cornelius" Oyamada. The Japanese sample wizard's sophomore domestic full-length is less cut-and-paste and more fully realized than its predecessor, demonstrating Cornelius's developing technical smarts and sophistication. He combines airy vocals that recall such other pop experimenters as Chicago's Sea And Cake with a variety of cannily incorporated rhythmic backgrounds, including running water samples in "Drop," and bird calls. The tapestry is complex and varied, with multi-layered harmonies and acoustic guitars contributing to the pastoral atmosphere of many of the tracks. In contrast, there's the choppy funk of "Smoke," complete with apocalyptic guitar solo, the synthetic Brazilian rhythms of"Bird Watching At Inner Forest," and hard, amphetamine rock on "I Hate Hate," whose one lyric is a terse Japanese "Damn!" But the point where POINT's elements really take off is a beautifully set version of the classic "Brazil," where a gorgeous computerized vocal seems to embody both the song's Technicolor tackiness and its simple, lyrical yearning. Free Yourself
Personnel include: Fantasia (vocals); Jazze Pha (rap vocals); Tank, The Underdogs (various instruments); Charles Pettaway (guitar); Eric Dawkins, Missy Elliott, Tamyra Gray, Lil Steve, Jazmine Sullivan (background vocals). Producers: The Underdogs; Missy Elliott; SoulShock & Karlin. Recording information: The Underlab, Los Angels, CA; The Hit Factory, Criteria, Miami, Florida; Soulpower Studios, Los Angeles, CA; Quad Recording, New York, New York. The first seasonof AMERICAN IDOL built up to the final week where Kelly Clarkson won most of the spoils. The second season swiftly closed to a battle between Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard, with both achieving superstardom. In its third season, the variety show seemed to result in record deals for almost all of the finalists; however, it was the tough-edged, soulful voice of Fantasia Barrino that finally overwhelmed the judges. Recording simply as Fantasia, the young singer with the powerful and richly seductive style debuts with FREE YOURSELF, a collection showing off her immense range, as she tries her hand (and excels) at many different types of music. She opens with the classic, mournful soul of "Ain't Gon' Beg You," followed by back-to-back 1970s-inspired songs, the title track and "Truth Is." Fantasia has certainly mastered the treat-me-right R&B ballad, but she also shows a different side on her traditional rendition of the jazz standard "Summertime." On the other end of the spectrum, she doesn't slip when served with a Jazze Pha hip-hop background on "Don't Act Right." To win AMERICAN IDOL, Fantasia had to be proficient in many genres, and FREE YOURSELF reveals her victory to be no fluke. SKU: 6581674

Scratch The Upsetter Again
Though the lineup of the Upsetters continually shifted throughout the 1960s and early '70s, the group is widely recognized as one of the finest backing bands in reggae history. Under the direction of Lee "Scratch" Perry, who produced and often played with the ensemble (they were something of a house band for the many records cut at Perry's Upsetter studio), the Upsetters not only accompanied vocalists, but also recorded and released their own instrumental tracks. Their tight-knit, groove-oriented chemistry was often augmented by Perry's progressive studio trickery. SCRATCH THE UPSETTER AGAIN draws from sessions primarily cut in 1970, and finds the Upsetters straddling the fence between the R&B- and ska-influenced sound of the late '60s and the deep roots vibe developing at the time. There are also traces of Perry's emerging dub experiments, with many tracks sporting a skeletal rhythmic architecture, washes of reverb, echo, and shuddering sound effects. While a few songs feature lead vocalists, Dave Barker's version of "Will You Still Love Me," for example, and Prince Miller's proto-rap on "Mule Train," SCRATCH is largely instrumental, with plenty ofbouncing bottom and heady melody to satisfy reggae fans. The addition of 10 bonus tracks makes this collection a particular treasure. SKU: 6569843

Street Hassle
Personnel: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar, piano, bass); Stuart Heinrich (guitar, background vocals); Michael Fonfara (piano); Marty Fogle (saxophone); Steve Friedman (bass); Michael Suchorsky (drums); Aram Schefrin (string arrangement); Jo'Anna Kameron, Angela Howard, Christine Wiltshire, Genya Ravan (background vocals). Engineers: Heiner Friesz, Manfred Schunke, Rod O'Brien. Live tracks recorded in Munich, West Germany. Studio tracks recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York. Crossing the wrong side of the tracks, as most of Lou Reed's albums do, 1978's STREET HASSLE is the angrier, younger sibling to Reed's eloquent, mature NEW YORK,released over a decade later. The centerpiece of STREET HASSLE, the handsome, hypnotic and brutal title track evolves in three "symphonic" movements, and is a powerful, theatrical precursor to Reed's work with John Cale on SONGS FOR DRELLA and director Robert Wilson on the operatic TIME ROCKER. Bruce Springsteen makes an uncredited spoken-word appearance in the last movement of the piece, "Slipaway," and there's even a touch of E-Street-type brassy groove on "Wait." An album teeming with the lyrical hell of drug addicts and desperate misfits, STREET HASSLE does possess elements of Reed's pitch-black humor. "Gimme Some Good Times" playfully samples "Sweet Jane," and Reed sings the strangely sunny words of "Real Good Time Together" against a morbid wash of distorted guitar effects and vocals. A mix of New York studio recordings and fine live performances recorded in West Germany, STREET HASSLE is a curious and compelling coda to Reed's tumultuous and ever-changing '70s work. SKU: 1003111

All That Jazz (The Best Of Ute Lemper)
Despite the album title, taken from Ute Lemper's showcase song in the musical CHICAGO, jazz is only part of this remarkable singer's repertoire. A paragon of European art song in the Kurt Weill tradition (Weill, along with Marlene Dietrich, is one of Lemper's biggest influences, and Lemper essays several of his songs here), Lemper is equally fond of Broadwayshow tunes and cabaret. More so than any of her other albums, the best-of compilation ALL THAT JAZZ touches on every facet of her musical personality, from a handful of classic show tunes like CABARET's "Don't Tell Mama," to brilliant reinterpretations of Weill's "Alabama Song" and Edith Piaf's "La Vie en Rose." If you became intrigued with Lemper through her pop-crossover album PUNISHING KISS, ALL THAT JAZZ is an excellent summation of her earlier career. SKU: 1006178

Aoxomoxoa (Expanded And Remastered)
The Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Tom Constanten (keyboards); Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann (percussion); Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan. Additional personnel: John "Marma-Duke" Dawson, David Nelson, Peter Grant, Wendy, Debbie, Mouse. Recorded at Pacific Recorders, San Mateo, California in 1969. Includes liner notes by Gary Lambert. The Dead's first attempt at sixteen-track recording, AOXOMOXOA was remixed at Alembic Studios in San Francisco in 1971 by original engineers Bob Matthews and Betty Cantor. This is the mix used for the CD issue. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Named after one of famed San Francisco poster artist Rick Griffin's lysergic palindromes, the Grateful Dead's third album saw the band inject their acid-fueled sting into folk music of various ages. Hunter added a lyrical landscape perfect for the band's blend of exploration and tradition. Portraits of a rebellious mystic ("St. Stephen") and a dandy day-tripper ("Cosmic Charlie"), proper Olde English tales ("Dupree's Diamond Blues"), and hallucinatory excursions to the borders of Hunter's muse ("China Cat Sunflower," "Mountains Of The Moon") are remarkable in that their expansive overview is interwoven with precise detail. The elongated strides of ANTHEM OF THE SUN were replaced with short bursts that hinted at the music's timeless sources. "St. Stephen" is a raw clarion call from Temple Mount. "Dupree's Diamond Blues" sounds like it fell out of the bluegrass tradition into afield of poppies. "Cosmic Charlie" is built on a "Revolution"-like riff, but with a far more subtle thrust and sweetly contrary harmonies. And "What's Become Of The Baby" is a nearly nine-minute excursion into weirdness that clearly mapped out one of the interstellar musical spaces the Grateful Dead had begun visiting. SKU: 1079994

Joe's Garage Act I-III
Personnel includes: Frank Zappa, Ike Willis, Dale Bozzio, Denny Walley, Al Malkin, Warren Cucurrullo, Ed Mann, Terry Bozzio, Geordie Hormel, Barbara Issak. Originally released as a 3 LP set. The superlative repackaging and remastering undertaken by Ryko has put the original three-part, two-record set of this magnificent nonsense tale together for the first time. This is back to the madness of Freak Out, with more pop and doo-wop bursting through all the complicated stuff, letting you know that Zappa could write a hit single, if he could be bothered to do so. Joe's Garage is a hoot and harmlessly pornographic. The sleeve-note states that it is "a stupid story about how the government is trying to do away with music." It is absolutely no coincidence that throughout, the listener mistakes the "scrutinizer" as the "scrotumizer." Zappa was that rude, and that funny. SKU: 1005402

Good Will Hunting
Producers include: Danny Elfman, Craig Street, Rob Schnapf, Elliott Smith, Daniel Lanois. For a movie so ostensibly family-oriented, the soundtrack to Good Will Hunting contains some pretty damn disconsolate music. The bulk of the songs here are provided by Heatmiser main man Elliott Smith, whose melancholy solo work far outshines his more rockist band outings, and has gainedhim far more acclaim. Smith songs like "No Name #3" and "Miss Misery" plumb the depths of despair without ever getting too noisy about their self-pity. We would use Nick Drake as a reference, were the comparison not rendered moot by the way Drake's name is tossed about recklessly in connection to every moe with a Prozac prescription and an acoustic guitar. Every late-'90s soundtrack is required by law to include at least one retro '70s cut. This album makes good use of that requirement to slip in Al Green's delectable rendition of the Bee Gees' classic torch song "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart." Pass the headphones and the Kleenex.
