For all but the absolutely obsessive, GREATEST HITS 1977-1990 is the definitive Stranglers album, and the only completely necessary purchase. Even in the group's earliest days, The Stranglers owed more to the Doors than they did to the Stooges, and they were really only a punk band by association. Yobbish, borderline-offensive songs like "Peaches," however, soon gave way to an oddly poppy post-punk sound that often made their singles extremely entertaining. For example, the throbbing "Duchess," featuring the most hyperactive bass playing this side of early John Entwistle, is a classic of its era, as is the delicate, waltz-time ode to the joys of heroin, "Golden Brown." However, the group's albums remained incredibly inconsistent--1981's MENINBLACK was a horrid, inscrutable concept album about aliens--and so this singles anthologyremains the best way to discover this uneven but often intriguing band. Proceed with caution after this, however.

A conscious reaction against "the myth of U2" (as guitarist The Edge put it), ACHTUNG, BABY was the result of two years work in Berlin and Dublin. Attempting to withdraw from the musical world and "re-invent" U2, the band secluded itself in studios, writing hours of material that was whittled down to 12 songs. The band's secrecy about the project aroused so much curiosity that early master tapes were stolen and bootlegged in Europe.
ACHTUNG, BABY reflects the band's interest in differing musical sounds. The quasi-industrial opening to "Zoo Station" and the hip-hop influence in "Mysterious Ways," define U2 as a group of musicians determined to challenge themselves and their audience.

Jin certainly isn't your typical rapper on the Ruff Ryders label; indeed, he's not typical by any standard. Born in Miami, Florida of Chinese heritage, Jin was raised on East Coast hip-hop, and freestyled his way to a record contract. The intro to his 2004 debut, THE REST IS HISTORY, lampoons a meeting between Jin and his fellow Ruff Ryders, as they ask him about the "Ryde or Die" lifestyle to his confused and hilarious responses. Unlike his labelmates, Jin isn't a motorcyclist, and he doesn't have a shadowy past or an intimidating bone in his body. What Jin can do is rap extemporaneously with amazing skill.
Jin's debut single, "Learn Chinese," which cleverly turns Asian stereotypes on their ears and features Wyclef Jean, earned decent R&B airplay at the end of 2003, and THE REST IS HISTORY followed in late2004. For the first few tracks on the record, Jin plays a bit to the Ruff Ryders sound, most notably on the rousing "Get Your Handz Off," but he does it in his own manner, as evidenced by the coy "Club Song." It's when he becomes immersed within his own aesthetic that he really shines, as on the ballad "Love Story" and the boastful "Karaoke Night." Jin presents a unique and refreshing voice in rap, and here he sounds like he's just getting warmed up.

After spendingmost of the '80s delving deep into Celtic imagery, Van Morrison made ENLIGHTENMENT, using the early rock 'n' roll and R&B of his youth for inspiration. "Real Real Gone" quotes lines from songs by James Brown, Wilson Pickett and Solomon Burke to reflect getting squarely hit by Cupid's arrow, while "In The Days Before Rock 'N' Roll" is where Morrison gets truly nostalgic about the music of his youth. As usual, the imagery used by the Belfast Cowboy is sharp and buttressed by gorgeous string arrangements.
Morrison's ruminations on love and life traipse some of the same dark corners as Frank Sinatra's more melancholy '50s work. The near-whispered vocals and low rumble of harmonica on "See Me Through" are soaked with a spiritual restlessness that contrasts the sweetness of "She's My Baby" and the upbeat spirit of "Youth Of 1,000 Summers" (a song ripe to be used as a comeback by any number of '60s soul vets).

Following the millennial release of FARMHOUSE, the members of Phish spent their time dabbling in spin-off projects ranging from Trey Anastasio's stint as a solo act and with superstar outfit Oysterhead to Page McConnell's Vida Blue and Jon Fishman's Pork Tornado. Creatively rejuvenated, this quartet of Vermont natives eagerly returned to the studio and emerged with ROUND ROOM, an improvisational triumph. Throughout the nearly 80 minutes that make up this outing, the members of Phish continually lock into one another with an ease that makes it seem as if the hiatus never happened.
As the songs unfold in a manner that's light years away from a traditional pop format, Trey and company flexing their musical muscles on the album's extended numbers that include the piano-driven "Walls of the Cave" and the twisting and turning opening cut "Pebblesand Marbles." Delightful nuances abound, like Anastasio's Afropop-sounding guitar riffs that pepper the bouncy title cut, the pitch-perfect harmonies sprinkled over the Dead-like "All of These Dreams" and the quirky time changes slipped into "Thunderhead." With ROUND ROOM, Phish has once again managed to cook up a complex musical meal that challenges the heart, hips and head.

Big Star's level of influence is inversely proportionate to their sales. Radio City, the second album by the band from Memphis, Tennessee, is the greatest example of this phenomenon. When it was first released, practically the only people who knew about it were rock critics. Today, it is universally recognized as a major inspiration for the indie and alternative rock movements, influencing everyone from R.E.M. to Teenage Fanclub. Although the term 'power pop' had been kicking around for a while, Radio City defined the genre. Best-known (or least-obscure) of its tracks is the sparkling 'September Gurls', which has been covered by many artists, including the Bangles and the late-model Searchers. Still very modern in sound, it is a landmark of the second pop era.
The commercial failure of Big Star is hardly an unsolved mystery--there's plenty of blame to go around. It still remains one of the pop music industry's biggest crimes, one that has been only mildly mitigated by the godlike status conferred on the band by the indie-rock generation long after these two records were made.
Alex Chilton, a soul fan who had been the gruff-voiced teenaged lead singer of the Box Tops, and high school friend Chris Bell, a Beatles freak, pooled their singing and songwriting talents on #1 RECORD. It was an audacious debut that aspired to the melodiousness and perfectly arranged feel of the mid-period Beatles, the raw rock kick of the early Kinks and the jangly country-rock beauty of the Byrds--all, it turned out, terribly unfashionable influences in the post-hippie, pre-punk era of the early 1970s. "Feel," "Don't Lie To Me" and "WhenMy Baby's Beside Me" feature stinging guitar licks, excited harmonies and hooks galore, and sound like someone discovering rock 'n' roll for the first time. Chilton's "Give Me Another Chance" and Bell's "Try Again," on the other hand, are acoustic ballads whose layered, Beatlesque harmonies and other touches, like the melodic slide-guitar lead and tambourine hits in "Try Again," are almost too beautiful. Chilton's "The Ballad Of El Goodo," a nod to Gram Parsons' country-rock, has a memorably optimistic chorus.

By the time they made this, their last record of the '80s, Jethro Tull was flush from its first unqualified success of the decade, 1987's CREST OF A KNAVE, which won a Grammy in the hard-rock category. Group leader Ian Anderson responded two years later with ROCK ISLAND, a record that seemed to confirm that he was willing to re-imagine Jethro Tull as a modern-rock act.
On 1989's ROCK ISLAND, there is little of the ornate Elizabethan grandeur of vintage Tull. Instead the band plays in a straightforward manner, with a decidedly polished sound. Anderson's flute, which once immediately identified a Tull record, is used sparingly. At this point, the core group of Anderson, Martin Barre and bassist Dave Pegg had solidfied into a cohesive trio, giving Jethro Tull a focused vision as the band enteredits third decade. The group shows a certain swaggering bravado on the opener, "Kissing Willie," and the influence of Southern rock on "Rattlesnake Trail."

Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) knows a little something about rocking house parties with a variety of textures. As drummer for the very Smiths-like Housemartins and later as producer/mastermind of the club-oriented Beats International crew, he has supplied the soundtrack to lager-swilling soirees of two polar subcultures. BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY is a smooth attempt to attract them both to the same shindig.
Throughout BETTER LIVING, techno and hip-hop beats and a variety of jazz/funk samples are married to a post-modern "rock" feel, utilizing mucho distortion, lots of analog squeals and coming up with a damn warm mix for an "electronic" album. The Bangles, a Los Angeles rock quartet, were the premier all-female band of the mid-'80s, stealing the crown from new wave goddesses The Go-Go's. Fronted by the doe-eyed Susanna Hoffs, the Bangles wielded imposing four-part harmonies in energetic pop arrangements. A DIFFERENT LIGHT is the Bangles' most successful recording, polished and powerful; and the substantial disc advances hit after hit, marking it among the best albums of the 1980's.
The group's first major hit, "Manic Monday," is not quite as funky as Prince's (the song's author) live versions, but it is rockier, more accessible, and infectious enough to bring the band to the top of the charts. The hook-heavy "Walk Like An Egyptian," a rollicking novelty song, effectively displaysthe band's exuberance and Susanna's sexy purr. "If She Knew What She Wants" is smart, sassy and perky. "Following," bassist Michael Steele's contribution, is an eerie, disturbing song about obsession and paranoia. The remaining songs are equally strong.
If The Go-Go's were the distaff punk cousins to the surf/girls/car-happy Beach Boys, then the Bangles were the female version of the polished, pop-perfect Beatles. On A DIFFERENT LIGHT it is obvious that these four women can sing, write and play their instruments as well as any of their male counterparts.

Fancifully described as the soundtrack to a non-existent French film about "political high and low life," 1988's WESTMINSTER AFFAIR is actually a compilation of the Monochrome Set's mid-'80s work for Cherry Red Records. Opening with the wittily politicized 1983 single "The Jet Set Junta," the 19-track collection continues through several other singles, including the slyly rude "The Mating Game," a handful of album tracks like "March of the Eligible Bachelors," and a few fairly rare B-sides, including the wild instrumentals "J.D.H.A.N.E.Y." and "Lester Leaps In," named for the band'sdrummer and guitarist respectively.
The packaging here is spectacular, though there's little rhyme or reason to the selection or its sequencing, and many of these tracks are available on more than one compilation. However, there's no denying the dry humor and casual intelligence of these songs, or their melodic strength.

Marley is in a mellow and happy mood as the album opens with "excuse me while I light my spliff" on "Easy Skanking" and maintains the feeling throughout. "Kaya" has one of the best bass riffs of any Marley song (played by the wonderful Aston "Family Man" Barrett). The hit single "Is This Love" is included and he sounds upbeat singing "She's Gone," although the subject is that his lover has just left him. Nothing fazed him; he was able to address political and emotional subjects with the same degree of feeling and his manner was truly saintly. KAYA is one of his finest moments.
