His Best Vol.1
Personnel includes: Howlin' Wolf (vocals, harmonica); Willie Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Jimmy Rogers (guitar); Adolph "Billy" Duncan (tenor saxophone); Ike Turner, Otis Spann, LafayetteLeake (piano); Willie Dixon, Buddy Guy (bass); Willie Steele (drums). Producers: Leonard Chess, Phil Chess, Willie Dixon. Recorded between 1951 & 1964. Includes liner notes by Mark Humphrey. This is part of Chess Records' 50th Anniversary series. Since even Howlin' Wolf's worst recordings are compelling in some regard, it should go without saying that HIS BEST, a collection of his finest Chess sides, is magnificent from beginning to end. Possessed of fine guitar and harp skills, a voice that could separate skin from bone, and a sheer magnetism and charisma that knew (and has known) no equal, Howlin Wolf is one of 20th century music's greatest performers. Every track here is stellar, and a few like "Evil," "Smokestack Lightnin'," "Back Door Man" and "Spoonful," will have listeners wearing out the repeat button on their disc players. Wolf's ferocious delivery can inspire terror and delight ("Three Hundred Pounds of Joy") equally, and the power of his voice can make you want to shout, laugh, cry or destroy some property. Though true fans may want to investigate the individual albums, HIS BEST is a consistently untouchable collection. SKU: 1011515

Dark Side Of The Spoon
Ministry: Al Jourgensen (vocals, guitar, slide guitar, banjo, saxophone, electronics); Paul Barker (vocals, bass, electronics); L. Svitek (guitar, electronics); R. Washam (drums, electronics). Additional personnel: Tycoon, Y. Age (vocals); Z. Hukic (guitar, electronics). Engineers include: J. Bacher, J. Dehaven, B. Kenny. DARK SIDE OF THE SPOONopens with Al Jourgensen screaming "I just shot a man to death" over grinding guitar riffs and an unrelenting, martial beat. Clearly, these godfathers of industrial rock show no signs of mellowing as they near their third decade of sonic terrorism. Longtime fans can rest easy, there are no attempts at mainstream crossover here--no string sections or sentimental ballads. True to form, Ministry delivers cut after cut of manic alienation. The savage, repetitive guitar patterns consolidate hard rock, punk and heavy metal into a new, uncompromising paradigm. Jourgensen revels in his angst, using it as a cathartic tool of expression. His tortured, filtered vocals bespeak a lifetime spent observing mankind's most heinous atrocities, but his knack for studio manipulation and sonic architecture makes the whole thing quite palatable, if not accessible. Shenanigans
SHENANIGANS compiles b-sides, an import-only release, and vinyl single cuts recorded during sessions for the band's studio albums. It also contains one previously unreleased song. Green Day: Billie Joe (vocals, guitar); Mike Dirnt (vocals, bass); Tre Cool (drums). Compilation producers: Rob Cavallo, Green Day. Serving as the perfect companion compilation to 2001's INTERNATIONAL SUPERHITS! collection, SHENANIGANS delivers an assortment of rarities, B-sides, covers, and previously unreleased material. Throughout this 14-track anthology, it's easy to hear how Green Day was able to successfully make the transition from scruffy skate-punks to unofficial heads of the nouveau-punk movement that became the mainstream in the mid-'90s. Staccato riffs, hooks aplenty, and lots of harmonizing are just part of the engine that drives cuts like the thunderous "Suffocate," the relentlessly driving "I Want To Be On T.V." and the pogo-worthy workout that is the previously unreleased "Ha Ha You're Dead." Surprises include the ambling pop of "On The Wagon," sterling surf instrumental "Espionage," and spot-on covers of the Ramones (a wildly infectious "Outsider") and The Kinks (a worthy "Tired Of Waiting For You"). SHENANIGANS reinforces Green Day's rep for creating quality pop-punk.This collection of odds and sods could easily pass as any other group's A list canon. SKU: 1073223

Reggae Greats
A CD reissue of an early '80s vinyl album, REGGAE GREATS is a brief but satisfying overview of Steel Pulse's early career. Covering only the band's '70s and early '80s releases on Island Records, REGGAE GREATS' 10 songs are a handy precis of Third World's golden age. All the very best tracks are here, from the Gamble and Huff-inspired "Now That We've Found Love" to the booming roots reggae of the classic "Jah Glory," one of the finest Rasta devotionals of the '70s. Other gems like the UK breakthrough hit "96 Degrees in the Shade"and the moving "African Woman" are also included. The remastering isn't perfect, but it restores a lot of the bass response the original vinyl version lacked. The two-disc REGGAE AMBASSADORS is more thorough, but if you're looking for a handy single-disc introduction, this is the one. SKU: 1011238

Brutal Youth [Remastered]
BRUTAL YOUTH is packaged with a 28-page booklet that includes rare photos and printed song lyrics. Personnel includes: Elvis Costello (vocals, guitar, piano, bass); Steve Donnelly (guitar); Andy Findon (piccolo); Steve Nieve (piano, harmonium, organ, keyboards); Bruce Thomas, Matt MacManus, Nick Lowe (bass); Pete Thomas (drums, percussion). Recorded between 1992 and 1996. Originally released on Warner Brothers Records (45535). Includes liner notes by Elvis Costello. After the rococo indulgences of MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE, Costello decided to return to his roots with BRUTAL YOUTH. Re-uniting with the Attractions, whose quirky, angular sound powered his finest albums, Elvis scaled down the arrangements to a more manageable level and brought his songwriting back to basics as well. The tunes here were the closest he'd come to rock & roll in several years, and there's a feeling of abandon that energizes the proceedings. As in the glory days, Steve Nieve's spindly keyboards provide most of the instrumental color as Elvis sings his spleen out on hard-hitting tunes like "Kinder Murder" and "13 Steps LeadDown." The black humor of "This is Hell" recalls the career-peak songwriting of Costello's SPIKE days, and the British Invasion-style raveup "Just About Glad" steals the show while exposing Costello's '60s influences. This is a bracing set, picking up as if eight years hadn't even passed since their previous outing (BLOOD & CHOCOLATE). Now expanded to a two- disc set, it's rich with alternate or early versions, a couple previously released B-sides (including the brilliant "Life Shrinks"). The version of "Favourite Hour" (the song from which came the album's title) recorded at an earlier session shows it to be brilliantly close to Procol Harum. While the formative takes offer some potent glimpses of the arrangement process, the officially released versions are a testament to Costello knowing what he was after. In addition, his liner notes are revealing and--not surprisingly--very well written. SKU: 1070350

No Code
Pearl Jam: Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard (vocals, guitar); Mike McCready (guitar); Jeff Ament (bass); Jack Irons (drums). Recorded at Studio Litho, Seattle, Washington; Chicago, Illinois; Atlanta, Georgia. Pearl Jam's ambitious and mystical NO CODE is no more a grunge album than Nirvana's MTV UNPLUGGED was a punk album, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody who's been listening all along. Even while helping to codify the droning heavy-metal blare of grunge, Pearl Jam has fought that code, breaking the rules of the music as defiantly as the band's business practices defy the rules of the music industry. By now, Pearl Jam can, and does, employ Indian drones, psychedelic rock, punk and folk without reaching. NO CODE, the band's fourth album, opens with "Sometimes," a prayer that slowly rises toward an anthemic chorus. But the song pulls back before it gets there, as if the band's goal is to embody the smallness of all of us. Pearl Jam still, clearly, believes in the awesome power of rock: In "Habit," Eddie Vedder nearly goes hoarse ranting at a friend who's picked up a dangerous one, and in "Red Mosquito," the band works up from a folk-rocky waltz into a '60s acid-rock whirl. But much of NO CODE finds Pearl Jam pulling away from such large notions. "Who You Are," one of a few songs that seemdirectly inspired by Vedder's recent collaboration with Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (on the DEAD MAN WALKING soundtrack), features droning guitars, tribal drumming and a Buddhist lyric. Even within the Pete Townshend-like electric-guitar strum and vocal wailing of "In My Tree," Vedder seems to be searching not for rock and roll experience, but for spiritual innocence. SKU: 1005248

Trash
Personnel: Alice Cooper (vocals); John McCoury, Joe Perry, Richie Sambora, Steve Lukather, Kane Roberts, Guy Mann-Dude, Mark Frazier, Jack Johnson (guitar); Alan St. John, Paul Chiten, Gregg Mangiafico (keyboards); Hugh McDonald, Tom Hamilton (bass); Bobby Chouinard, Joey Kramer (drums); Steven Tyler, Jon Bon Jovi, Kip Winger, Myriam Valle, Maria Vidal, Diana Graselli, Desmond Child, Bernie Shanahan, Louie Merlino, Tom Teeley, Michael Anthony, Stiv Bator, Jango, Jamie Sever, Joe Turano (background vocals). Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Woodstock, New York; The Power Station, Right Track Recording, Sigma Sound Studios and Mediasound, New York, New York. While Alice Cooper's late-'80s comeback was a success largely on the strength of his ever-popular stage show, his albums of the era, 1986's CONSTRICTOR and 1987's RAISE YOUR FIST AND YELL, failed to reap masscommercial success. All of this changed with 1989's TRASH, his first platinum-certified album in nearly 15 years. The album's top-10 single "Poison" made fans of '80s glam-metal fully embrace Cooper, a man who had almost single-handedly created the genre. As he did on his past couple of releases, Alice worked with one of the day's top producers, Desmond Child, who was known primarily for his songwriting talents (including hits for Aerosmith, Kiss, Cher, and others). Also, TRASH included several guest appearances from some of rock's top names--Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi play on "Hell Is Living Without You," while four of Aerosmith's five members appear at various points throughout. Other album highlights include "Bed of Nails," "House on Fire," and the title track. SKU: 1011481

Go For It
All punk bands must grow or die, or so the story goes. Rehashing the same three chords works for a record or two (unless you're the Ramones, then it's fine) but gets tired quickly. However, the converse is also true. Change too much and the fanscry "sellout!", an unenviable situation for any band, but particularly acute for Northern Irish firebrands Stiff Little Fingers. After producing two essential studio albums and one classic live album, SLF demonstrated on GO FOR IT that they could both adapt and remain true to the sound that had made them successful. Like their contemporaries The Clash, SLF looked to the looping rhythms of reggae (and particularly dub reggae) as fodder for an expanded musical palate. "Roots, Radicals, Rockers and Reggae" and "Safe as Houses" demonstrate that they had made a particularly astute choice. Along with reggae's influence are touches of subtle, effective pop on the sweet "Gate 49" and even a horn section (!) on the tongue-in-cheek "Silver Lining," one of the prettiest odes to bad luck ever written. Diesel And Dust
Midnight Oil: Peter Garrett (vocals); Jim Moginie (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Martin Rotsey (guitar); Peter Gifford (bass, background vocals); Rob Hirst(drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: John Ockwell (cello); Jeremy Smith (French horn); Glad Reed (trombone); Warne Livesey (keyboards). Recorded at Alberts Studios in Sydney, Australia. The opening track, "Beds Are Burning," has an infectious middle eight that goes: "how can we dance when our earth is turning, how do we sleep while our beds are burning." This seemingly harmless song offers irony about the plight of minority races in Australia. It continues with the second track, "Put Down That Weapon." By the time the record is finished the listener has learnt something about a part of the world that would not normally get any exposure. This is a clever way of getting their message across. Were the songs not so good, this could be like going back to school. SKU: 1001585

Goodbye And Hello
Personnel: Tim Buckley (vocals, guitar, 12-string guitar, slide guitar, kalimba, vibraphone); Lee Underwood, Brian Hartzler, John Forsha (guitar); Don Randi (piano, harpsichord, harmonium); Jerry Yester (piano, organ, harmonium); Jimmy Bond, Jim Fielder (bass); Eddie Hoh (drums); Carter C.C. Collins, Dave Guard (percussion). Recorded in Los Angeles in June, 1967. Includes a poem by Larry Beckett. Initially a folksinger, Tim Buckley quickly defied stylistic categorization. GOODBYE & HELLO offers a rich musical vocabulary, from plaintive love song to free-form expressionism, with the artist's remarkable voice at its core. Buckley's acrobatic voice dances around the melodies, coloring his material with raw emotion. His range is startling, from sonorous baritone to wild falsetto, but its utilization is never gratuitous. The beautiful, often-covered ballad "Morning Glory" is one of the highlights of this record. The haunting beauty of Tim Buckley's work is caught to perfection herein and continues to be influential. Iicons [PA]
Naughty By Nature: Treach, Vinnie Brown. Additional personnel includes: 3LW, Road Dawgs, Redman, Method Man, Pink, Rottin Razkals, Carl Thomas. Producers include: Allstar, Griffin, WOK, DJ Twinz, Against all odds, that salacious crew that declared itself "Down with O.P.P." back in the '80s managed to survive the ups and downs of the mercurial hip-hop world and make it into the 21st century. For those who only know Vinnie and Treach by that aforementioned Jacksons-sampling hit, IICONS may come as a bit of a revelation. While NBN still has the wild thing on its collective mind (as exemplified most effectively by "What You Wanna Do," to which Pink adds some sensuous crooning), there's more than unfettered carnality at work here. From the complex imagery and polysyllabic rhyming of the opening title cut to the cutting sociological critique of"Let Me Find Out," Naughty By Nature displays an impressive lyrical facility for themes that reach beyond the call of booty. Incendiary guest shots from Redman, Method Man, Queen Latifah, and others help spice things up, making IICONS an impressive offering from these rap veterans. SKU: 1076224

Police Live, The [SACD] [Digipak]
The Police: Sting, Andy Summers, Stewart Copeland. Additional personnel: Tessa Niles, Dolette McDonald, Michelle Cobbs (background vocals). Recorded live at The Orpheum, Boston, Massachussetsand at The Omni, Atlanta, Georgia between 1979 & 1983. By the time The Police broke up in 1984, they'd already traveled the world and played before millions of people in hundreds of countries. Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland had come a long way from their first American visit, when they drove across the continent piled into a van and played in any dive that would have them. LIVE chronicles The Police at opposite ends of their career. Disc 1 was originally recorded for Boston's WBCN-FM in November of 1979; REGGATA DE BLANC had come out months before and the band was still raw, a full year away from cracking the American Top 10. The stripped down sound The Police displayed shows a group not far removed from the evolving new wave movement, which dominated the charts in their native England at the time. The versions of "Walking On The Moon" and "The Bed's Too Big Without You" point to the heavy reggae undertones--whether in the dub-like dynamics of Summers' guitar playing, or the rhythmic interplay that Sting and Copeland tease each other with--that made the band's sound so unique. Rare versions of the band's first two independent singles, "Fallout" and "Landlord," are part of a set that was as close to punk rock as The Police ever got. Disc 2 is from The Omni, a hockey rink in Atlanta, recorded four years to the month from when the WBCN show took place. By now The Police were huge, having graduated from clubs and theaters to arenas and stadiums; "Every Breath You Take" and SYNCHRONICITY, their first and only chart-toppers, ruled the airwaves. Any remnants of the first tour's gritty feel was gone in favor of a pristine sound, and a trio of back-up singers doubled the number of musicians on stage. Predictably, newer songs like "Tea In The Sahara" and "King Of Pain" dominated the set list, alongside older standards like "Roxanne." The upside of all this time spent playing together was that the unit could incorporate different textures into their music, attracting new fans without alienating die-hards. LIVE shows The Police as a band able to leap the chasm separating the studio and the stage, with a brand of genre-hopping music that spawned imitators while defying categorization. SKU: 1079806

Personnel: Ray Charles (vocals, alto saxophone, piano, electric piano); Marjorie Hendricks (vocals); David Newman (tenor saxophone); Hank Crawford (baritone saxophone); Lee Harper, Marcus Belgrave, John Hunt (trumpet); Edgar Willis (bass); Richie Goldberg, Teagle Fleming (drums); The Raylettes (background vocals). Engineers: Harold Chapman, Tom Dowd, Ivan Miles. Recorded live at The Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 5, 1958 and Herndon Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia on May 28, 1959. Includes liner notes by Gary Giddins. Previously released as a 2 LP set. There are plenty of live Ray Charles recordings available, all supporting the theory that the man never gave a bad performance, but this one is something special. Recorded in 1958 and '59 (prime time in the Charles timeline), this album fully captures the fire and fury of Charles' Gospel/blues/jazz/R&B amalgam in all its churning, gut-punching glory. Things kick off with a couple of tunes that show Charles and band's instrumental might, the horns punctuating and sparring with Charles' soulful piano runs. Hits such as "I Got a Woman" and What'd I Say" are presented in near-definitive versions, complete with Brother Ray's lascivious call-and-response with his indefatigable Raylettes. Elsewhere, Charles gives a glimpse of his vision's breadth via "In a Little SpanishTown" and "Swanee River Rock." A key moment occurs in "Drown in My Own Tears," when Charles, testifying like an ecstatic preacher over the Raylettes' backing, finds the exact meeting place of emotional turmoil and very visceral catharsis. In short, this is the live Ray Charles album to get. SKU: 5075913

Moon And Antarctica, The
Modest Mouse: Isaac Brock (vocals, guitar); Eric Judy (bass); Jeremiah Green (drums). Additional personnel: Ben Blankenship (guitar, lap steel guitar, keyboards); Greg Ratajczak (guitar); Tyler Riley (violin); Brian Deck (keyboards); Ben Massarella (percussion); Chiyoko Yoshida, Tim Rutilli (background vocals). Recorded at Clava Studio, Chicago, Illinois. After wowing the college and indie rock world with two lauded independent CDs, THIS ISA LONG RIDE FOR SOMEONE WITH NOTHING TO THINK ABOUT and THE LONESOME CROWDED WEST as well as many EPs, Modest Mouse signed to a major. This is often a cause for apprehension with indie favorites, but THE MOON & ANTARCTICA weathers these concerns. While the band's lo-fi sound is a little higher-fi in this major label debut, the basic pop structures that have always tied Modest Mouse's music together are pushed more to the forefront, and the production works well. All sonic changes are slight, and the band's sardonic, slightly skewed lyrics, with their evasive take on modern life, maintain their bite. Even the poppiest tune, the breezy "Gravity Rides Everything," is fraught with tape-effects and arrhythmic percussion. The band also retains a punked-out, dissonant, discordant approach on some tracks, such as the infectious "A Different City" and the creepy "Alone Out There." THE MOON & ANTARCTICA finds Modest Mouse with its musical integrity still intact. SKU: 1038416
