Complete RCA Victor Recordings, The
Personnel includes: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Jack Teagarden (vocals, trombone); Jimmie Rodgers (vocal, guitar); Edgar Sampson (alto saxophone, violin); Budd Johnson, Peanuts Hucko (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Bobby Hackett (cornet); Kid Ory, Vic Dickenson (trombone); Barney Bigard (clarinet); Teddy Wilson, Leonard Feather, Charlie Beal (piano); John Trueheart, Allan Reuss (guitar); Mike McKendrick (banjo, dobro); Bill Oldham, Red Callender, Arvell Shaw (bass); Chick Webb, Zutty Singleton, Sid Catlett, Yank Porter (drums). Esquire All-American 1946 Award Winners: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone); Don Byas (tenor saxophone); Jimmy Hamilton (clarinet); Charlie Shavers, Neal Hefti (trumpet); Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington (piano); Remo Palmieri (guitar); Chubby Jackson (bass); Sonny Greer (drums). Recorded between 1932 and 1956. Includes liner notes by Dan Morgenstern. Digitally remastered by Dennis Ferrante (1996, BMG Studios, New York, New York.) This 4-disc box covers Armstrong's two encounters with RCA/Victor. The first discs date from 1932 and 1933, a time when the trumpeter/singer was probably at the height of his powers. Backed by a 12-piece band, Armstrong gives rousing renditions of "I've Got The World On A String" and a re-recording of his classic "Basin Street Blues," featuring a wonderful scat vocal and a superb trumpet solo. The third and fourth discs cover recording dates in 1946 and 1947. These sessions, a handful of which are taken from live performances, feature some of Louis' best-known sidemen, as well as guest appearances by the likes of Kid Ory, Johnny Hodges and Duke Ellington. There are popular film tunes like "Pennies From Heaven" and Armstrong originals such as "Back O' Town Blues" and the wonderful "Some Day You'll Be Sorry." Satch's performances are stellar throughout (the awesometone, range and attack of his horn are as strong here as ever). Collectors will be interested in the rare alternate takes, the lengthy session notes, and hard-to-find treasures like the "comedy" cut "Laughin' Louis." A total of four hours of music, this is one of the definitive Armstrong sets, essential for collectors and a delightful introduction for beginners. SKU: 1068608

Sumday [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Grandaddy: Jason Lytle (vocals, guitar); Burtch, Dryden, Fairchild, Garcia. Picking up where 2000's celebrated SOPHTWARE SLUMP left off, SUMDAY continues to mine that particular vein of spacey, '60s-influenced indie rock practiced by the likes of the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, et al. That pleasantly stoned, slightly detached, wonder-of-it-all feeling is certainly present throughout the album. A mildly bemused attitude towards the world is at the center of the lyrical excursions, married to accessible, pure-pop moves. The debatable alt-country flavor that some heard on SLUMP is essentially absent here, with the balance tipped more in favor of that classic straight-eighths indie guitar style married to some gorgeous atmospheric production touches and some first-class melodic songwriting. With the combination of heavenly harmonies, hooky melodies, and kooky electronic effects, one is tempted to imagine what might have happened if the Electric Light Orchestrastarted out in the mid-'90s in a basement with a four-track and went on from there. Nude And Rude (The Best Of Iggy Pop)
Personnel includes: Iggy Pop (vocals); David Bowie, Kate Pierson (background vocals). The Stooges: Iggy Pop (vocals); Ron Asheton (guitar, bass); James Williamson (guitar); Scott Thurston (keyboards); Dave Alexander (bass); Scott Asheton (drums). Compilation producer: Wendi Cartwright Osborn. Includes liner notes by Iggy Pop. For those unfamiliar with the careening, death-defying life and music of Iggy Pop, NUDE & RUDE provides a concise and potent overview. Opening with tracks from his seminal late '60s outfit, The Stooges, the assault is immediate. "Search & Destroy," "No Fun," and "Gimme Danger" all possess an animalistic power to which many bands aspire but very few achieve. The countless cover versions that have surfaced over the years have only underscored the Stooges' bone-rattling urgency. Iggy's solo career has been more fitful. Beset by various forms of self-abuse, Pop resurfaced in the late '70s with David Bowie (who has produced Pop a number of times). Bowie tossed his pop agenda into Pop's molten rock. "Lust for Life" and"The Passenger" may not have the danger and excitement of Pop's previous work, but they are firm statements of renewed his artistic vigor. Pop returned in the mid-'80s and he has been here to stay ever since. The cannonball "Cry for Love," the uncompromising "Cold Metal," and the pop friendly "Candy" end NUDE & RUDE on a high note, in keeping with Pop's renewed sense of purpose. SKU: 1003633

Natural Born Killers
Producers include: Trent Reznor, Ron Goldberg, Hypoluxa, Hermes Pan, Count Ringworm. Compilation producer: Trent Reznor. Original score written by Trent Reznor. Samples include "Ted Just Admit It" (as performed by Jane'sAddiction), "I Put A Spell On You" (as performed by Diamanda Galas), "Checkpoint Charlie" and "Violation Of Expectation" (as performed by Barry Adamson). Tha Dogg Pound's "What Would U Do" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. Oliver Stone couldn't have made a better choice for the producer of NATURAL BORN KILLERS' soundtrack than Trent Reznor, alternative music's supermanipulator and Nine Inch Nails' frontman. Reznor's use of dialogue and choice of songs perfectly cut through Stone's blatant generalizations about media over-saturation and its effects on society. The songs and their placement in the soundtrack offer a disturbing commentary on our culture's inability to separate the rush of sex from the rush of violence. By putting Patti Smith's raging "Rock N Roll Nigger" next to the sweet seduction of the Cowboy Junkies' "Sweet Jane," Reznor stabs at this confusion, and rubs our noses in it. As a time capsule, the NATURAL BORN KILLERS soundtrack will remind listeners of an era of Dahmer Delicatessen jokes and "Free O.J. Simpson" t-shirts. The overwhelming elegance in Nine Inch Nails' "Born" seethes with equal parts pleasure and pain, and revels in the glory of alienation, declaring "I never was part of you." As a soundtrack, Reznor's use of dialogue from the script is scarily on-target. Telling moments between characters convey as much as the songs. The NATURAL BORN KILLERS soundtrack is a brutal take on social commentary, and one of the most revealing soundtracks of the year. SKU: 1002368

Distance To Here, The
Live: Edward Kowalczyk (vocals, guitar); Chad Taylor (guitar); Patrick Dahlheimer (bass); Chad Gracey (drums). Additional personnel: Christopher Thorn (guitar, slide guitar); Adam Kowalczyk (guitar); Michael Railton, Jerry Harrison (keyboards). Throughout much of the '90s, Live has been tabbed to inherit the serious rock mantle from R.E.M. and U2. On their fourth album, the four childhood friends continue down this path as theyonce again don their hair-shirts of tortured introspection and inquisitiveness. Former Talking Head Jerry Harrison returns behind the board after previous production stints on MENTAL JEWELERY and THROWING COPPER. As was the case on these previous Live albums, Harrison harnesses the band's chemistry in a way that reinforces frontman Ed Kowalczyk's weighty lyrics. Kowalczyk howls with controlled ferocity as he sings about various spiritual quests that occur via Western ("The Distance") and Eastern ("Meltdown") doctrines of religion. Guitarist Chad Taylor fuels this fervor with unbridled fury on the tempestuous "We Walk in the Dream" and the roiling "Sun." Live even updates its meat-and-potatoes instrumental setup by adding a dollop of loops to the already enticing "Voodoo Lady." For as much unchecked passion that this Pennsylvania quartet can muster, the band also demonstrates an uncanny mastery of dynamics, whether it's on the tortured gusto of "When Dolphins Cry" or the gorgeous ethereality of "We Walk in the Dream." You (Radio Gnome Invisible Vol.3) [Digipak]
YOU is the final installment in Gong's legendary "Radio Gnome Trilogy," and it marks an important turning point for the band. By 1974, the psychedelic hippie/folk-rock element of the sound that was leader Daevid Allen's most important contributionwas beginning to disappear. In its place was a more sophisticated musical vision that owed as much to jazz-rock fusion as to fellow space rockers like Pink Floyd or Hawkwind. Ironically, this is Gong's most "spacy" album, full of extended, ethereal passages that would inspire future generations of space rockers. The sound was equally defined however, by the jazzy flights of saxophonist Didier Malherbe and the sinuous rhythms of bassist Mike Howlett and drummer Pierre Moerlen (the band would eventually become the fusion-oriented Pierre Moerlen's Gong). Allen's songs still provide a crucial link to the rest of the trilogy, though the conceptual/mythological aspect is less crucial to YOU. SKU: 1086052

Under The Bushes Under The Stars
Tracks 19-24 are not listed on the CD package, but they are listed on the disc itself. Guided By Voices includes: Robert Pollard. Additional personnel: Tripp Lamkins (guitar); Shelby Bryant (strings); John Shough (piano); Shelby Bryant (strings). Engineers include: John Shough, Doug Easley, Davis McCain. Principally recorded at Cro-Magnon Studios, Dayton, Ohio and Easley Studios, Memphis, Tennessee. Pestered by complaints that they were wasting perfect hooks by not bothering to finish them, lo-fi pop avatars Guided By Voices set out to prove they could make a proper pop album if they really wanted to. Then they ditched it like just another melody line in Robert Pollard's overly fertile head. On the way to releasing this, their ninth album, the band tossed out most of a set of songs recorded with uber-producer Steve Albini and with Kim Deal of the Breeders, and replaced them with some random pop matter written and recorded on the fly after they were supposed to be done. Lo-fi and whimsical they remain, but much of the original pop ambition for UNDER THE BUSHES can beheard on the final product; it's easily the band's most accessible album. Verses and choruses repeat up to three times, songs clock in over three minutes, and someone plays a piano--by GBV standards, this is perfectly baroque. But among the rush of power-pop hooks and new-wave touches, there is also an anti-pop undercurrent. The gorgeous acoustic tone of "Acorns & Orioles," for example, is invaded by a howling noise that continues, unabated, through the next two tracks as well. What remains in the end, in the power-pop drive of "Your Name Is Wild" and the skittering guitar wallop of "Man Called Aerodynamics," is the one thing GBV couldn't ditch if they wanted to: hooks galore. Bob Marley & The Wailers: Bob Marley (vocals, guitar); Junior Marvin (guitar, background vocals); Tyrone Downie (keyboards, background vocals); Earl Lindo (keyboards); Aston Barrett (guitar, bass, percussion); Carlton Barrett (drums); Alvin Patterson (percussion). I Threes: Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt (background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Glen DaCosta (tenor saxophone); David Madden (trumpet); Nambo (trombone); Devon Evans (percussion). Producer: Bob Marley & The Wailers, Errol Brown. Reissueproducers: Bill Levenson, Maxine Stowe. Recorded at Tuff Gong Studio, Kingston, Jamaica. Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York) An interesting collection of singles and posthumously archived material created in the same way as Hendrix's CRASH LANDING and The Beatles "Free as a Bird," (albeit with most of the original musicians), CONFRONTATION is more consistent than one would expect and includes at least one certified classic in "Buffalo Soldier." The record features some very tasty guitar, good vocal performances and the always rock-steady rhythm section of the Barrett brothers. While not absolutely essential, it should certainly be the next purchase for anyone who already owns all of the official Marley albums. While the disc is perhaps a little light on variety, it's still a Bob Marley album and thus as good as the best work of many other artists. Overall, CONFRONTATION is great mellow summertime listening and a worthy addition to any reggae collection. SKU: 1063780

Recipe For Disaster, A
Personnel includes: Matt Black, Jonathon More, PC, Strictly Kev. The Ninja Tune label is partially responsible for creating a market for open-ended hip-hop compositions. These combined the jazz influences big in '90s hip-hop with the art of turntablism, and whatever else their artists threw in the mix. DJ Food is one of the label's strongest forces, a collaborative effort between popular DJs/producers Coldcut, PC, and Strictly. A RECIPE FOR DISASTER is the quartet's 1995 debut album, and a welcome contribution tohip-hop. Relying on a curious recipe of hip-hop drum loops, otherworldly synth sounds, and hints of jazz, the crew squeezes out tasty treats like "Insofan" and "The Dusk." If unfamiliar incarnations of hip-hop are your cup of tea, tracks like " Dark River" and "Scientific Youth" will make you happy that there aren't any mediocre emcees present to mess it all up. RECIPE is a must have if you've been searching for imaginative experiments in hip-hop. SKU: 1042286

Drummers Of Burundi
Peter Gabriel's Real World label has done the Western world a great service by recording outstanding music from all corners of the world--music Western listeners most likely would not have heard otherwise. THE DRUMMERS OF BURUNDI is no exception. Here, this centuries-old group, who play huge ceremonial drums with heavysticks and a staggering force and precision, unleash their thunderous, ritual-charged power. In Burundi, the drum is a sacred object, closely associated with fertility, the life cycle and nobility (the Burundi word ingoma translates as both "drum" and "kingdom"). The performance seems therefore doubly charged with significance and vitality, a feeling echoed in the ritual chants, cheers, and call and response woven throughout. While THE DRUMMERS OF BURUNDI may strike the casual Western ear as somewhat monochromatic, the recording is actually comprised of forty-one different rhythms--pulses and counter-rhythms, varying tempos, harsh, clacking side-stick accents--and each rhythm represents an important concept of Burundi society: the recognition of important figures, peace, respect, unity and the progress of their country. In this way, THE DRUMMERS... is not only a powerful musical statement, but also a window into the life of a vital African culture. SKU: 1007381

Flip Fantasia (Hits & Remixes)
US3: Mel Simpson (keyboards, programming); Geoff Wilkinson (programming, sampling, scratches). Additional personnel: Rahsaan, KCB, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Tukka Yoot, Kobie Powell (rap vocals); Ed Jones (soprano saxophone); Mike Smith (tenor saxophone); Alexander Pope Norris, Gerard Presencer (trumpet); Dennis Rollins (trombone); Gareth Williams (piano); Tim Vine (electric piano). Producers include: Mel Simpson, Geoff Wilkinson, Jim Hawkins, Nellee Hooper, Blacksmith. Compilation producer: Eli Wolf. On their two albums, 1993's HAND ON THE TORCH and 1997's 52ND AND BROADWAY, London natives Geoff Wilkinson and Mel Simpson showed excellent taste in jazz samples. The two producers had full access to the enormous Blue Note Records catalogue, and they showed remarkable facility in turning familiar phrases into slinky hip-hop riffs. Us3's excellent 1994 hit single "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)" lifts from pianist Herbie Hancock's mid-'60s post-bop classic "Cantaloupe Island" made the track an unforgettable archetype of the regrettably short-lived acid jazz movement. The rest of FLIP FANTASIA: HIT AND REMIXES, a ten-song condensation of Us3's two releases, is nearly the equal of that hit. Samples from such jazz giants as Freddie Hubbard and Benny Green power Wilkinson and Simpson's slick, glossy beats. Unfortunately, the accompanying raps tend to be uninspired and forgettable.Nonetheless, the jazzers are the stars throughout FLIP FANTASIA. SKU: 3101880

You're Gonna Hear From Me
Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Eddie Gomez (bass); MartyMorell (drums). Recorded live at the Jazzhus Montmartre, Copenhagen, Denmark on November 24, 1969. Includes liner notes by Eddie Gomez. This live set was recorded in Copenhagen in 1969. Pianist Bill Evans' trio at that time was bassist Eddie Gomez (who'd been with him since '66) and drummer Marty Morell (who'd recently joined as was to stay for six years). The trio was always a rich and ideal format for Evans; an ensemble small enough to breathe as one, but sufficiently varied and separate to allow for dazzling conversation. Throughout his career, Evans' trios would find each of the three members playing off of the other two in ways that would set a standard. Highlights ihere nclude "Someday My Prince Will Come," galloping along in a delightful blur, and Evans' own "Waltz For Debby," whose melody seems to spool out of itself as if it's being created anew each time it's played. Semi-charmed Life
Third Eye Blind: Stephan Jenkins (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, drums, percussion, programming); Kevin Cadogan (vocals, guitar, auto harp); Arion Salazar (vocals, piano, bass); Brad Hargreaves (drums). Additional personnel: Eric Valentine (guitar, piano, keyboards, programming); Ari Gorman (cello); Michael Urbano (drums). Recorded at Toast Studios, Skywalker Ranch and H.O.S., California. This San Francisco band's first album is a study in contradictions, presenting heavy, often melancholy, themes in the guise of catchy, tuneful power pop. The irresistible single "Semi-Charmed Life" is just one example of Kevin Cadogan and Stephan Jenkins' agile lyrical stylings. The delirious tempo aptly reflects both ahigh feeling and a sense of desperation, of things spinning out of control. The album is chock full of searching lyrics set against a background of lush, rhythmic music. "How's It Going To Be" has a palpable sense of nostalgia and loss. The funky "I Want You" expresses a yearning for connection: "Children love to sing but then their voices/Slowly fade away/People always take a step away/From what is true/That's why I like you around/I want you." Green Mind
Dinosaur Jr.: J. Mascis (vocals, guitar); Don Fleming (guitar, acoustic bass, background vocals); Murph (drums). 1991's GREEN MIND is Dinosaur Jr's major-label debut, following five years on the esteemed indie SST. It's kind of surprising that the band made it to the majors at all, because the original lineup of guitarist/singer J. Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph had imploded quite publicly and viciously in 1989. Though Murph drums on three tracks and noise-scenester Don Fleming plays acoustic bass on one, GREEN MIND is almost entirely a one-man show. The results are surprisingly tuneful and assured, with the leadoff single "The Wagon" being the catchiest, poppiest song Mascis had delivered to that point. Elsewhere, "Puke and Cry" and the pummelingly hypnotic "Thumb" are as powerfulas any of the noise-pop roars on indie releases like YOU'RE LIVING ALL OVER ME. While the album is somewhat uneven--what Dinosaur Jr album isn't?--GREEN MIND is a powerful and melodic grunge-pop nugget. SKU: 1015682

Feel The Spirit
Cassette available on Telarc Records (33362) [894083362]. NOTES: Also available in a 3-pack with LIVE AT ORCHESTRA HALL, DETROIT and HERE'S TO LIFE. Personnel includes: Joe Williams, Marlena Shaw (vocals); Jerry Peters (piano). Recorded at Conway Recording, Hollywood,California on September 20-23, 1994. Williams recorded this collection of spirituals for Telarc at the age of 75, just four years before his death. Though this is certainly a minor work in his catalog, Williams' performances here are very restrained and quite beautiful, and his voice shows little sign of wear. R&B composer Johnny Pate's arrangements are steeped in R&B, soul, and gospel but marred by the overuse of synthesizer. Nonetheless, they serve to bring out an R&B/pop side of Williams that is quite exciting. Several of the tracks feature duets with Marlena Shaw, who shows off her fervent Gospel side. The most moving tracks are the very simple and unadorned versions of "Were You There?," "In My Heart," and "The Lord's Prayer," each sung in an amazingly rich and resonant baritone and accompanied by Jerry Peter's sensitive piano. Days Like This
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, alto saxophone, Hammond organ); Shana Morrison (vocals); James Huntsman (electric guitar, background vocals); Ronnie Johnson, Foggy Lyttle (electric guitar); Teena Lyle (recorder, piano, vibraphone, congas, background vocals); Leo Green (tenor saxophone); Matthew Holland, James McMillan (trumpet, flugelhorn); Jonn Savannah (Hammond B-3 organ); Nicky Scott (bass); Geoff Dunn (drums, tambourine); Liam Bradley, Noel Eccles (drums). Engineers include: Mick Glossop, Walter Samuel, Brian Masterson. Recorded at Windmill Lane Recording, Dublin, Ireland; The Wool Hall and Real World Studios, Bath, England. DAYS LIKE THIS continues in the vein of `90s-era Van Morrison albums: covers of slightly obscure nuggets that reflect Morrison's love of classic rhythm and blues, an appreciation for the human condition in the throes of love, and a voice that has ripened with age. Many of the fine musicians who've worked with Van on his past releases reappear with exemplary results. Over half of the tracks are arranged by former James Brown cohort Pee Wee Ellis, whose charts punch up songs like "Perfect Fit" and the title tune. Brian Kennedy's pure falsetto is a gossamer veil that contrasts Morrison's gruff vocals--particularly on "In The Afternoon," Van's wistful ode to late-in-the-day love-making. Daughter Shana Morrison sings back-up on most tracks, and duets with her father on the two covers--Ray Charles' "You Don'tKnow Me," which gets a smoky reading with Shana playing Linda Ronstadt to Van's Brother Ray, and the countryish "I'll Never Be Free," originally done by Tennessee Ernie Ford and Kay Starr. DAYS LIKE THIS also maintains Morrison's ability to delve into the mysticism of his heritage and turn out reams of lyrical intrigue. The complex imagery of "Ancient Highway" refutes Van's claim that he is a simple tunesmith--made on the self-descriptive "Songwriter." The interior conflict of past wrongs and a shot at redemption is what fuels the twists and turns that "Highway" takes. On it, the Belfast Cowboy invokes Hank Williams, a Biblical parable and a town that skips in and out of reality as part of the metaphysical journey; and follows it up by playing acoustic guitar, harmonica and a soulful Hammond organ throughout this eight minutes-plus opus. Sign Of The Times
All tracks have been digitally remastered. James joins forces with the hot early '80s composer Rod Temperton, and the results are surprisingly enjoyable. The two composers contribute equally to SIGN OF THE TIMES, each bringing three songs to the finished product. Temperton mainly adds a disco flavor, while James' contributions mellow things out in his distinctive fashion. The opposing styles complement one another and create a well-balanced recording. James, who also produced TIMES, continues to hone his fine conducting skills here. On each track, he's backed by his usual orchestral counterpoint of strings, brass, and percussive instrumentation. Patti Austin, Val Simpson, and Luther Vandross contribute great background vocals, lending a nice R&B element tothe appropriately titled album. TIMES is a splendid mixture of jazz fusion and '80s pop. SKU: 1007304
