Smiley Smile/Wild Honey [Remastered]
2 LPs on 1 CD: SMILEY SMILE (1967)/WILD HONEY (1967). SMILEY SMILE was recorded in 1967 as a quick replacement for the unreleased SMILE LP, which had been scrapped at the last minute. SMILEY SMILE contains 5 songs that were to have been included on SMILE: "Good Vibrations," "Heroes & Villains," "Vegetables," "Wonderful" and "Wind Chimes." The versions recorded for SMILEY SMILE are less experimental. Different versions of "Cabinessence" and "Our Prayer," two more songs from SMILE, were used on the album 20-20, released in 1969. Two other SMILE songs, "Cool, Cool Water" and "Surf's Up," appeared on the albums SUNFLOWER (1970) and SURF'S UP (1971). The Beach Boys: Mike Love, Carl Wilson, Alan Jardine, Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson. Reissue producer: Mark Linett. Includes liner notes by David Leaf. Digitally remastered using HDCD technology. SMILEY SMILE: Producer: The Beach Boys. Recorded at United Western Stuidos, Goldstar Studios, CBS Studios, and Brian Wilson's Home Studio, Los Angeles, California. Originally released on Brother (T-9001) on September 5, 1967. WILD HONEY: Producer: The Beach Boys. Recorded at Brian Wilson's Home Studio, Los Angeles, California. Originally released on Capitol (T-2859) on December 4, 1967. Here are two classic Beach Boys albums from 1967 that were critically dismissed in their day but are now rightly considered to be among their best, nicely remastered and fleshed out with bonus tracks. SMILEY SMILE was originally thrown together as a quick replacement for the doomed, unreleased SMILE album, a would-be masterpiece that had been scrapped at the last minute and has since achieved legendary status, the rock equivalent of the missing footage of Von Stroheim's GREED. WILD HONEY, which is in many ways the Beach Boys' soul album, was a deliberate retrenchment, and its stripped-downproduction anticipated both Dylan's JOHN WESLEY HARDING and the Beatles' WHITE ALBUM. Along with the R&B-influenced title track and "Darlin'" (not to mention a great Carl Wilson-sung cover of Stevie Wonder's "I Was Made To Love Her"), highlights include the great garage rocker "How She Boogalooed It" and the wonderfully breezy and mostly acoustic "I'd Love Just Once To See You" (as in "in the nude"). Pure joy from start to finish. SKU: 1058975

Blackjack David
Personnel: Dave Alvin (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Greg Leisz (guitar); Brantley Kearns (violin); Doug Wieselman (clarinet, organ); Chris Gaffney (accordion); Dillon O'Brian (accordion, electric piano, harmonium); Dan McGough (organ); Dave Jackson (acoustic & electric basses); David Pilch, Gregory Boaz (acoustic bass); Bob Glaub (electric bass); Bobby Lloyd Hicks (drums, percussion, background vocals). Recorded at Media Vortex Studio, Burbank, California from February to March, 1998. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Former Blasters guitarist Dave Alvin's deep, honest, no-bull vocal style provides the perfect vehicle for his musically adept and emotionally sincere songwriting on BLACKJACK DAVID. Produced by Greg Leisz, the album's eleven majestic cuts represent the best of what country and folk are all about--gutsy and real, powerful and brave, no production tricks, just pure, suberbly-crafted music. A striking feature of BLACKJACK DAVID is its use of wide open spaces--each song stretches and breathes, and each story ebbs and swells within a wide dynamic range. The wistful "Abilene" uses harmonium swells and tremolo guitar (courtesy of Leisz, who dips into a wide sonic pallette throughout the album) to propel its nomadic narrative."Evening Blues," an elegant acoustic number, sticks to gentle, evocative fingerpicking and harmonics, fleshed out with accordion and gentle percussion. Gotta Get Thru This
Personnel includes: Daniel Bedingfield (vocals); Solid R.O.C.K (rap vocals); David Okumu, Mark Johns (guitar); Leo Green (saxophone); Matt Holland (trumpet); Lewis Taylor (Hammond B-3 organ); Miles Bold (percussion). Producers: Mark Taylor, Daniel Bedingfield, Al Stone, Ali Staton. "Gotta Get Thru This" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Dance Recording. Sure, this young UK singer earned a smash hit in England straight out of the gate with his first single (which provides the title track for this debut album) by combining R&B grooves and pop smarts. But what he comes up with is ultimately more reminiscent of vintage Michael Jackson and George Michael than of any boy-band types. For one thing, you'd never guess he wasn't American, and for any R&B-based singer from Mick Jagger to the aforementioned Mr. Michael there is no higher praise. Also, as evidenced on the opening cut "Blown it Again" and the infectious "James Dean," he ups the lyrical content a notch above what's normally expected by purveyors of this type of sound. In this and in his forthright display of confidence and attitude to spare, Bedingfield brings to mind a younger, more innocent Robbie Williams, and displays no less potential. SKU: 1081481

Real Life
REAL LIFE, Magazine's 1978 debut, might be the first true post-punk album. Bandleader Howard Devoto had been the co-leader of Manchester's Buzzcocks, one of the first and most important U.K. punk bands, but he left shortly after the recording of their first EP, SPIRAL SCRATCH. Forming Magazine with guitarist John McGeoch, keyboardist Dave Formula and bassist Barry Adamson (later a noted soundtrack composer), Devoto married the manic energy of the Buzzcocks to a darker and more ambiguous lyrical and musical vision. REAL LIFE is undeniably bleak--"Motorcade" concerns the JFK assassination, and other titles include "Recoil" and "Burst"--but there's a certain black humor in tracks like "The Great Beautician in the Sky." Purists should note that the version of"Shot By Both Sides" here is a much different and somewhat inferior re-recording than the classic 7". That version is available on the singles compilation RAYS AND HAIL. SKU: 1003242

Headhunters [SACD]
Personnel: Herbie Hancock (Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet, synthesizer); Bennie Maupin (soprano & tenor saxophones, saxello, bass clarinet, alto flute); Paul Jackson (marimbula, bass); Harvey Mason (drums); Bill Summers (congas, shekere, balafon, agogo, cabasa, hindewho, tambourine, log drum, surdo, gankoqui, beer bottle). Recorded at Wally Heider Studios and Different Fur Trading Co., San Francisco, California. Includes liner notes by Scott H. Thompson and Herbie Hancock. Head Hunters has spawned a thousand copies and copyists, but is only strengthened through comparison. One of the most enduring works of the 70s' jazz/funk legacy, and surely one of Herbie Hancock's most enjoyable and infectious recordings, the album was released in the deeply groovy days of 1973,and soon became the best-selling record in jazz history. Loping along on a glorious bed of springy wah-wah and synth bass, the group used all the new technology of the time, and Hancock himself seemed to revel (as he still does) in the latest keyboard sounds available to him. Jazz/funk has never again sounded so exciting and dangerous. SKU: 1070865

Sopranos, The (Peppers & Eggs) [SACD]
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. PEPPERS & EGGS was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. For the second installment of songs from his hit series, SOPRANOS creator David Chase once again casts his net far and wide in compiling a fascinating cross-section of artists. Kicking off with an inspired fusion of the Police's creepy stalker ode "Every Breath You Take" and Henry Mancini's classic noir instrumental "Peter Gunn," Chase wanders all over the musicalmap, taking in styles as varied as Kasey Chambers' alt-country "The Captain," the classic soul of Otis Redding's "My Lover's Prayer," the lush, Dido-flavored electro-pop of "Certamente," and Cecilia Bartoli's impassioned performance of Vivaldi's "Sposa Son Disprezzata." Chase keeps the Rat Pack vibe going by including Cake's rumbling tribute to the Chairman Of The Board ("Frank Sinatra"), while Hoboken's favorite son himself delivers the Brazilian-flavored "Baubles, Bangles and Beads," and Bob Dylan cuts a bouncy take of Dean Martin's "Return to Me." Loyal soldiers and series cast members Miami Steve Van Zandt and Dominic Chianese also contribute to the musical proceedings. The E Streeter and his band The Lost Boys rip into the Boss-like rocker "Affection," while Chianese croons and whistles his way through the Italian folk song "Core'Ngrato." SKU: 1075736

Sign Of Truth
Personnel: Tish Hinojosa (vocals, guitar, piano); Marvin Dykhuis (guitar, charango, mandolin, 6-string bass, percussion, background vocals); David Grissom (guitar); Lloyd Maines (steel guitar); Eamon McLaughlin (violin); Chip Dolan (accordion, piano, organ, synthesizer); Joel Guzman (accordion, piano); Dan Torosian (saxophone); Rick White (trumpet); Randy Zimmerman (trombone); Glenn Kawamoto (bass); Rafael O'Malley Gayol (drums); Jose Galeano (congas, timbales, percussion); Fred Remmert, Dave McNair (tambourine); Sara Hickman, Margo Timmons (background vocals). Engineers include: Fred Remmert, Dave McNair, Bob Cobban. Recorded at Cedar Creek Studios, The Hit Shack & Brooklyn Bridge Studios, Austin, Texas; Studio 306, Toronto, Canada. Tish Hinojosa has been ahead of the curve of some time. Her music is a superb amalgam of country, American and Mexican folk, Tex-Mex/conjunto, and pop, and she's a worthy contemporary of similar performers such as Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris and Peter Rowan. SIGN OF TRUTH is something of a departure from her earlier releases. Here Hinjosa tries for a fuller "pop" sound, but it's pop in the BurtBacharach/Brian Wilson mode, rather than in the Britney Spears sense, with more keyboards and tasteful, restrained electric guitars. The jaunty, joy-filled "Wildflowers" could be an outtake from a late '60s Beach Boys album, with a hook recalling a mellow summertime of sweet soul music. The reflective "The Dreams I Have Seen" mixes jangly tremolo guitars, and sounds like R.E.M. playing Jimmy Webb, with Hinojosa's dulcet, clear soprano gliding towards the heavens. She doesn't forsake her roots, though, as evidenced by the haunting Tex-Mex/Western-flavored ballad "Mona Lisa By the Rio Grande." SIGN demonstrates Hinojosa's growth and range, with no compromise of vision. SKU: 1038002

In Your Mind [Remastered]
Personnel: Bryan Ferry (vocals, piano, synthesizer); John Porter, Paul Thompson, John Wetton, Chris Spedding, Martin Drover, Ray Cooper, Morris Pert, Frankie Collins, Paddie McHugh, Dyan Birch, Jacquie Sullivan, Helen Chappelle, Doreen Chanter, Preston Hayward, Phil Manzanera. Recorded at Air Studios, London, England in 1976 & 1977. Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (Gateway Studio, Portland, Maine). This is by far Ferry's most conventional rock record; there's little here that connects either with his earlier revisionist solo albums, his artier stuff with early Roxy Music, or the moonlight and roses romanticism of the band's later incarnation. Lyrically, Ferry is still a flop with chicks here, but his tunes are surprisingly straightforward, the arrangements conservative for a gent withhis pedigree, and the singing about as unironic as he gets. High points include the opening "This is Tomorrow," a straight ahead blues-based rocker complete with cowbell (Foghat could have covered it, and probably should have). "Tokyo Joe," an aesthetes ode to the allure of Asian women, anticipates David Bowie's "China Girl" by about six years, while the concluding "In Your Mind," a big, almost inspirational song, ends with some very impressive layered guitar solos (courtesy of either Chris Spedding or Phil Manzanera). Diabolus In Musica
Slayer: Tom Araya (vocals, bass); Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King (guitar); Paul Bostaph (drums). Principally recorded at Oceanway Studios, Los Angeles, California. The sledgehammer rhythms and churning guitars of Slayer remain in full effect on DIABOLUS IN MUSICA. Seldom has an album been more aptly titled, as the ominous, minor key riffs and modalities that power the band's compositions are the aural personification of darkness and evil, engendering an inescapable sense of foreboding. The tunes here, from "BitterPeace" to "In The Name of God," are streamlined metal, containing only the essential elements necessary to drive the band's message home. One aspect of the band's sound that makes them unique among their peers is that no matter how harried charcoal-throated vocalist Tom Araya's vocals become, they are always intelligible, revealing Slayer's preoccupation with politics and social, as well as personal turmoil. Under The Pink
Personnel: Tori Amos (piano, vocals, organ); Trent Reznor, Merry Clayton (vocals); Steve Caton (guitar), Steve Clayton (guitar, mandolin); John Philip Shenale (organ, keyboards); George Porter Jr. (bass); Carlo Nuccio (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Eric Rosse, Paul McKenna (programming). String personnel: Ezra Klinger, Nancy Roth, John Wittenberg, Francine Walsh, Michael Harrison, Chris Reutinger (violins), Jimbo Ross, Cynthia Morrow, John Acevedo (violas), Nancy Stein-Ross, Dane Little, Melissa Hasin (cellos), Dominique Genova (bass). Engineers: Paul McKenna, John Beverly Jones, Eric Rosse. Recorded at The Fishhouse, New Mexico and Westlake Studios, Los Angeles, California. UNDER THE PINK was nominated for Best Alternative Music Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. It's been a long time since an artist as quirky and defiantly personal as pianist-vocalist Tori Amos exploded upon the pop charts. With her debut effort LITTLE EARTHQUAKES, Amos avoided popular trends and convenient pigeonholes: all at once she evokes an era of thrush-like sopranos, folkish confessionals, and daring new wave artists. The resulting music on her second Atlantic release, UNDER THE PINK, is brimming over with innocenceand sensuality, spirituality and heresy. That she is able to confront all of these contradictions, let alone try to resolve them, makes for remarkably powerful music. In fact, UNDER THE PINK owes much of its potency to the feeling that we're watching Amos grow up before our very eyes. The daughter of a Methodist preacher, Tori Amos was a child prodigy on the piano, gifted with an exceptionally quick ear and a solid rhythmic feel. However, while pursuing her formal studies, she ran dead up against the rigidity of classical protocol, and her teachers tried to break her rather than channel her talents. Some of the emotional push and pull of this early artistic catharsis peeps through in the way Amos and co-producer Eric Rosse approach the multiplicity of piano sounds which inhabit UNDER THE PINK--sounds which symbolize the many feminine rites of passage depicted throughout the album. There are the child-like, half-remembered musings of "Bells For Her" and "Icicle" ("I think the good book is missing some pages"), and the vigorous attack of "The Waitress," "Cornflake Girl" and "God" ("God sometimes you just don't come through/Do you need a woman to look after you"). Here Amos' sense of alienation, rage and betrayal is echoed in offbeat rock textures and swooping vocal refrains suggesting the work of fellow traveller Kate Bush on THE DREAMING. Elsewhere, her vibrant vocal range and lush harmonies suggest early Joni Mitchell and even the ethnic-new age melange of Enya. The characters in her songs, however, are neither flower children nor navel gazers, but strong, vulnerable women coming to terms with their needs and longings in an often chilly world. UNDER THE PINK maps the inner journey of post-modern women and signals the SKU: 1004908

Blue Jeans And Moonbeams
Personnel: Don"Captain Beefheart" Van Vliet (vocals, harmonica); Dean Smith (guitar); Michael Smotherman (keyboards, background vocals); Mark Gibbons, Jimmy Caravan (keyboards); Ira Ingber, Bob West (bass); Gene Pello (drums); Ty Grimes (percussion). BLUEJEANS & MOONBEAMS emerged later in the same year that UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED was released and, like GUARANTEED, was produced by Andy DiMartino. This time however, Beefheart was without any of his previous Magic Band members--the new ensemble was assembled out of primarily session players. Conventional wisdom, in the hands of Beefheart's devoted following, has branded this album an outcast, an aberration generally not even mentioned. While it bears little of what his fans had been responding to in his output from 1967 to 1972, it is nonetheless a perfectly fine album of conventional pop filtered through variations of Beefheart's familiar poetics and swamp blues inclinations. If the name Captain Beefheart was not emblazoned across the cover, this release could easily be lauded as an engaging, albeit quaint, period piece. SKU: 1004164

Where It's At
Performers include: Clarence Carter, Arthur Conley, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin, King Coleman, Carla Thomas, Herbie Mann, Bar-Kays, Solomon Burke. Contains 26 tracks. Most of the Ace/Kent series of compilations drawn from the Atlantic vaults have concentrated on specific styles or eras. They have avoided duplication of tracks and generally favoured the obscure over the familiar. However, label boss Ted Carroll has indulged his own preferences on WHERE IT'S AT: SOUL IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR. Most of Atlantic's major players on the '60s soul scene, Clarence Carter, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin, Don Covay, and Solomon Burke are represented by several tracks. Many an album has boasted the likes of "Sweet Soul Music," "Land Of 1000 Dances," and "When A Man Loves A Woman." But here they rub shoulders with tracks that are seldom repackaged and songs that are better known in other artists' hands. Especially enjoyable is the juxtaposition of two instrumentals, Herbie Mann's "Philly Dog" and the more familiar "Soul Finger" bythe Bar-kays. Club-friendly Latin soul sounds come courtesy of King Curtis & Willie Bobo's "My Girl Sloopy" and Charlie Palmieri's "Uptight (Everything's Alright)." The inclusion of "In The Midnight Hour" in both Wilson Pickett's original version and as an organ-driven instrumental by Little Mac & The Boss Sounds makes for interesting comparison. SKU: 5076655
