Extra Texture (Read All About It)
Personnel: George Harrison (vocals, guitar, piano, Moog synthesizer); "Legs" Larry Smith (vocals); Jesse Ed Davis (guitar); Jim Horn (saxophone); Tom Scott, Chuck Findley (horns); Leon Russell, Nicky Hopkins (piano); Billy Preston (electric piano); David Foster, Gary Wright (keyboards); Paul Stallworth (bass, background vocals); Carl Radle, Klaus Voormann, Willie Weeks (bass); Jim Keltner (drums, percussion); Jim Gordon, Andy Newmark (drums); Norm Kinney (percussion). Engineers: Norman Kinney, Phil McDonald. Recorded at A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California. Rebounding from a poorly received 1974 American tour, Harrison returned in 1975 with one of his most well-crafted albums to date. Having realized that the record-buying public was no longer particularly interested in listening to his musical evocations of Eastern mysticism (and songs with titles like "The Lord Loves The One Who Loves The Lord"), Harrison reigned-in his spiritual leanings and concentrated on making music with more general appeal. One of the best songs on EXTRA TEXTURE is the hit single "You" a driving, big beat helping of Motown-like pop that Harrison had originally written for Ronnie Spector in 1971. Other highlights include "This Guitar Can't Keep From Crying, " a cryptic, minor-key sequel to "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," the late-nightPhilly-soul of "Can't Stop Thinking About You" and "His Name Is Legs," a quirky rocker (featuring former Bonzo Dog Band drummer, "Legs" Larry Smith) that proved that the ex-Beatle had not lost his sense of humor. Tribute (Live)
Personnel: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Randy Rhoads (electric & acoustic guitars); Rudy Sarzo (bass); Tommy Aldrige (drums). Recorded live in 1981. Includes liner notes by Phil Alexander, Ozzy Osbourne, Delores Rhoads. Digitally remastered by Stephen Marcussen (Marcussen Mastering). Just prior to the death of guitarist Randy Rhoads, Ozzy Osbourne was planning on releasing a live album. With Randy's passing in April of '82, Osbourne felt that it would be more appropriate to shelve the album in favor of SPEAK OF THE DEVIL, a live double set that featured only versions of his Black Sabbath-era material. By 1987, Osbourne finally felt that the time was right to issue the originally planned live effort featuring Rhoads, titled TRIBUTE. TRIBUTE is simply one the greatest live heavy metal albums ever released. Rhoads' playing is consistently firey throughout, a fact that confirms how tragic his early passing was. The first eleven tracks are from the DIARY OF A MADMAN tour, including such exceptional Ozzy solo tracks as "Crazy Train," "I Don't Know," "Flying High Again," "Mr. Crowley," "Suicide Solution," and the Sabbath nuggets"Iron Man," "Children of the Grave," and "Paranoid." "Goodbye to Romance" and "No Bone Movies" are from an earlier solo gig, and the final track, "Dee (Randy Rhoads Studio Outtakes)," is a stirring solo guitar piece. TRIBUTE confirms that this early solo Ozzy line-up featuring Randy Rhoads was his finest. SKU: 1073056

End Of The Century (Expanded And Remastered)
The Ramones: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); Dee Dee Ramone (bass); Marky Ramone (drums). Additional personnel: Sean Donohue (spoken vocals); Steve Douglas (saxophone); Barry Goldberg (piano, organ). Recorded at Gold Star Studios, Excalibur Studios, DevonshireSound Studios, Sound Dog Studios & Original Sound Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Harvey Kubernik. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This has always been the Ramones most controversial album, thanks to the characteristically over the top production by '60s legend Phil Spector. Some longtime fans hold that the band is overwhelmed by Spector's trademark Wall of Sound, and the Ramones themselves have expressed some reservations with the album over the years, although that may have been a result of Spector's personal eccentricities during the recording sessions--at one point he reputedly held a gun on them. In retrospect, however, Spector's sound and the Ramones' buzzsaw guitar attack make an excellent match, and with the exception of a pleasant but pointless cover of Spector's "Baby, I Love You" there isn't a weak track on the album. Highlights include a Spector-ized version of the theme to ROCK 'N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL (markedly different from the cut on the movie soundtrack), "Do You Remember Rock 'N' Roll," (their ode to '60s Top 40 radio), "Danny Says" (their ode to manager Danny Fields), and "Chinese Rocks" (Dee Dee Ramone's often-covered ode to copping heroin). Sarah Connor
Personnel includes: Sarah Connor (vocals); Kay D., Rob Tyger (various instruments); Colin Rich (background vocals); TQ, Naturally 7, Wyclef Jean. Producers include: Bulent Aris, Dirk Van Gergcum, Kay D., Rob Tyger, Wyclef Jean. Sarah Connor grew up in Germany listening to sweet 1970s soul music like Marvin Gaye while cutting her teeth in countless gospel choirs. Between those two sometimes-disparate but undeniably intertwined worlds she crafted a special brand of music she dubs "green-eyed soul," a starkly sexual, dance-oriented mixture deeply rootedin pop know-how, and accentuated by Connor's powerful, multi-octave voice. SARAH CONNOR opens with breakout hit "Bounce," a simple but undeniably catchy dismissal of an unfaithful lover. From there, Sarah uses her strong, sultry voice to make it perfectly clear what topic is first and foremost on her mind with the hip-hop-infused "Let's Get Back To Bed - Boy" and the crooning, gospel-tinged "Skin On Skin." She channels Teena Marie on the gleefully sensual "One Nite Stand (Of Wolves And Sheep)" as Wyclef Jean slips in to play the Rick James role. Connor also delivers some powerful messages, as on the light hip-hop ballad "Love Is Color-Blind." SARAH CONNOR reveals a sexy young chanteuse with a powerhouse voice. SKU: 6557348

Prince Of Egypt
Original songs written by Stephen Schwartz. Original score composed by Hans Zimmer. Producers include: Hans Zimmer, Adam Smalley, Marylata E. Jacob, Jeff Rona. THE PRINCE OFEGYPT was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Soundtrack Album. "When You Believe" was nominated for 2000 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals and for Best Song Written For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. Talk about a marketing masterstroke; leave it to Speilberg's Dreamworks company to get three simultaneous soundtrack albums out of the same film. THE PRINCE OF EGYPT is an animated version of the story of Moses in Egypt, characterized by some famous voices (Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, etc.). While all three albums are related to the events depicted in the film, each represents a distinct musical style. The inspirational version features contemporary Christian artists, the country disc presents the best of modern-day Nashville and the third is a mainstream pop offering. So whether you go for Mariah Carey or Shirley Caesar, you're bound to find something to your taste on one of these releases. This disc features straightforward pop in the person of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston (the lush duet of the title song) and Boyz II Men (the sophisticated a capella harmonies of "I Will Get There.") There are also some selections sung by the actors; Michelle Pfeiffer, Ralph Fiennes, and even Steve Martin and Martin Short (the good-humored "Playing With the Big Boys.") A touch of local color is added by the addition of Middle Eastern chanteuse Ofra Haza's "Goodbye Brother." SKU: 1000221

Rush Hour
Producers include: Dutch, Joe, Irv Gotti, Lil' Rob, Dame Grease. Engineers include: Joe Watlick, Michael Ifversen, Joe Quinde. The soundtrack to the film RUSH HOUR bears an appropriately urgent, urban tone, consisting as it does of hot tracks by contemporary hip-hop and R&B artists. While this album is fairly eclectic, covering several bases of the rap world, it doesn't have the opportunistic, thrown-together feel that many hip-hop-based soundtracks do. The track selection seems carefully considered and RUSH HOUR flows like an album, not like a bunch of disparate pieces stuck together to fillup space. From Wu-Tang's "And You Don't Stop" to the smooth R&B of Jon B.'s "Glad That We Loved" and Too Short's unapologetic "Tell the Feds," RUSH HOUR keeps your ears and feet at attention. SKU: 1013908

Where I Wanna Be
Personnel includes: Donell Jones (vocals, various instruments, drum programming); Eddie Ferrell, Darren Lightly (various instruments); Sheldon Goode (acoustic guitar); Serban Ghenea (electric guitar); Tomi Martin (guitar); Kyle West (keyboards); Omar Phillips (percussion); Wesley Hogges, Scott Gaddy (drum programming); Left-Eye. Producers: Donell Jones, Eddie "Eddie F." Ferrell, Darren Lightly, Wesley Hogges,Eric Williams. Engineers include: Mike Alvord, Rich Keller, Andrew Cardenas. The man most known for penning the Usher hit single "Think of You," Donell Jones returns to the R&B music scene with his second effort WHERE I WANNA BE. His blend of smooth harmonies and mid-tempo grooves places him among an elite class of R&B artists. With his first album, Donell Jones maintained a low profile with songs made strictly for the clubs. But on "U Know What's Up," Jones keeps that underground feel, while managing to put a commercial spin on his music. Other songs like "Think About It (Don't Call My Crib)" and "Shorty (Got Her Eyes on Me)" showcase Donell's unique songwriting talent. With a sound reminiscent of the '80s R&B group Loose Ends, WHERE I WANNA BE is neo-soul meets bump-n-grind music. SKU: 1019923

Steel Rod EP
Pesonnel includes: Erica Fletcher,Heloise Williams, Rickety Boys Choir, Velvet (background vocals). Recorded at Studio Tropical, Brooklyn, New York and Plus/Minus Studios, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Although Oneida loves its psychedelic and experimental references, the Brooklyn-based band never sticks with one type of sound. On the STEEL ROD EP, garage, blues, and a bit of 1960s soul all get their say. In the organ driven din, guitars, bass and drums pound out repetitious blues riffs overlaid with squawky vocals. Skronking like a sax or squeaking like a pre-pubescent boy on the first song "XXY", the singer can be compared to Make Up frontman Ian Sevonius. Unlike Make Up, however, Oneida tends to add in more freak outs, odd sounds, and less structure. Not all of STEEL ROD EP is cacophonous, however. The soul/gospel of "Tennesee" brings in the choir and the familiar singing/talking vocals. The Creedence Clearwater Revival cover of "Sinister Purpose" will either leave you screaming in horror or bobbing your head in classic rock bliss. Where is the experimental fuzz and psychedelic guitar? It's on the hidden track, of course. SKU: 1043941

Difference Between Me And You Is That I'm Not On Fire, The
The follow up to 'Mclusky Do Dallas' is the Welsh trio's third full length and once again sees the band's production duties coming from Steve Albini (Shellac, Big Black, Nirvana). The album mixes discordant riffs with high-pitched vocals and rapid time changes to evoke bands such as The Pixies and The Jesus Lizard. However their own unique sound is stamped via their tongue in cheek titles to otherwise dark songs such as 'Without MSG I Am Nothing' andmain single from the album 'That Man Will Not Hang'. Heathen Chemistry
Oasis: Noel Gallagher, Liam Gallagher, Gem Archer, Andy Bell. Additional personnel: Johnny Marr (guitar, slide guitar, background vocals); Paul Stacey (piano, Hammond organ, Mellotron); Mike Rowe (piano, pump organ, Hammond organ); London Session Orchestra. Oasishas always been a band that favored the "big" gestures of rock stardom. Their fifth studio album, HEATHEN CHEMISTRY, doesn't change this stance, but what it does do is hone the band's best qualities to an impossible-to-resist machine-like precision, all gleaming chrome and super-high gloss finish. The basics are all here: the snarling, swaggering vocals; the massive, all-encompassing hooks; the faux-Beatles melodies; and, perhaps most importantly, the overwhelming sense that, while their records are playing, it is likely that they just might be the most unstoppable force known to rock or roll. Most of the songs fall into one of two modes, either rather sweet, sensitive (though never cloying) ballads or monumental stadium rockers that bow before no man. Standouts of the first are the torch (or perhaps cigarette lighter) song grandeur of "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" and the structurally bizarre "Little by Little," a track which demonstrates an unnerving but wholly effective synthesis of mid-period Pink Floyd with Cher at her most dramatic. Standouts of the second kind include all of the album's first three tracks but especially the steamroller that is "Hung in a Bad Place," a monstrous, spitting squall of true rock majesty. Reggae Gold 2002
Just as the NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC series has chronicled top-40 pop through numerous volumes, the REGGAE GOLD compilation discs have long been collecting the best of mainstream reggaein one convenient package. REGGAE GOLD 2002 is certainly no exception to this tradition. The two-disc set features everything from the extremely hip-hop influenced, sample-heavy "Gimme the Light" by Sean Paul to the tradition-minded roots stylings of the venerable Beres Hammond on "Come Down Father," and the feminine perspective on dancehall reggae offered by Lady Saw with the appropriately titled "Baddest Girl." The second disc is something of a bonus, featuring remixes by Jazzy T and DJ Kareem, adding value to an already impressive package. SKU: 1073442

Music Is Rotted One Note
Squarepusher: Tom Jenkinson. Squarepusher is the nom de disque of one Tom Jenkinson. Jenkinson made his name as one of the most innovative experimentalists of the drum-and-bass movement, taking the genre out of the "just-dance-music" realm and giving it an aura of serious compositional theory. Though there's a stylistic thread to be found here, MUSIC IS ROTTED ONE NOTE finds Jenkinson leaving drum-and-bass far behind, in favor of a hybrid that's as unprecedented as it is indefinable. He uses thetools and influences that made his previous work so successful; studio wizardry, electronic manipulation of sound, and a pronounced jazzy streak. On MUSIC IS ROTTED, Jenkinson combines modern electronica with old-school "serious" electronic music, Miles-influenced electric jazz and some ambient touches, eschewing breakbeats and recognizable samples. What he's created here is akin to what New Music composers sometimes refer to as a "sound environment," one that reveals new facets with each listen. SKU: 1069779

Mississippi: The Album [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Includes an untitled hidden track following "Outro". Personnel: David Banner (rapvocals, keyboards, programming); Smoke D, Lil' Jon, Lil' Flip, Pastor Troy, Ax, Sky, B-Flat, Marcus, Fiend, J Da Groover, Mississippi Shawty, Kamikaze (rap vocals); Billy Hume (guitar, bass); Patrick Hayes, Zafar S. Saood, Freddie Mac (guitar); L. Roc (strings, percussion); Horns Unlimited (horns); Robert MacDowell (keyboards); Bone Crusher (background vocals). Producers include: David Banner, KLC, Lil' Jon, Mixzo, Billy Hume. On his sophomore disc MISSISSIPPI: THE ALBUM, southern-centric hip-hopper David Banner delivers a fascinating mix of straight-up hardcore gangsta rap and politicized soul music in the vein of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Like Marvel Comics superhero the Hulk, whose alter ego provides the artist's pseudonym, Banner is one scary looking character, and his rapping style is as gruff, threatening, and hyper-aggressive as his appearance might suggest. Marrying his horrific lyrical scenarios to samples that often sound like low-budget slasher flick music or the WILD WORLD OF SPORTS theme gone astray, Banner puts the sex and violence right up front for all to see. Then, just as the listener thinks it's all been said before, the album switches gears, adopting a reflective, socially aware tone right out of WHAT'S GOIN' ON. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Banner isn't content to merely describe the societal ills he sees around him--he actually questions the motivations behind the problems. An ambitious project in what is too often a one-dimensional genre, MISSISSIPPI: THE ALBUM suggests that gangsta rap has the potential to offer more than simply a play-by-play account of urban culture's darkest moments. Greatest Hits 1980-1994
Personnel includes: Aretha Franklin (vocals, piano, keyboards); George Michael, Luther Vandross, Gloria Estefan, Bonnie Raitt, Sylvester, Michael McDonald, Lisa Fischer (vocals); Rick Iantosca (acoustic & electric guitars); Paul Jackson Jr., Dean Parks, Cornell Dupree, Corrado Rustici, Doc Powell (guitar); Marc Russo (alto saxophone); Kenny G. (tenor saxophone); Clarence Clemons (saxophone); Narada Michael Walden (piano, drums, percussion); Babyface (keyboards, programming); David Cole (keyboards, background vocals); Nat Adderley Jr., Burt Bacharach (keyboards); Nathan East (bass); Bernard Purdie (drums); Robert Clivilles, Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); L.A. Reid (programming); Cissy Houston (background vocals). GREATEST HITS (1980-1994) contains all of Aretha's hits since arriving at Arista records in 1980 as well as several new songs recorded for this release. "A Deeper Love" was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. This aptly named best-of album collects the creme de la creme of LadySoul's post-Atlantic Records work, a fruitful period in which she re-invented herself as an all-purpose pop diva. Highlights include several star duets, among them "United Together," a classic Burt Bacharach ballad done with Michael McDonald, and the perky "Doctor's Orders," with Luther Vandross; as well as more urban fare such as the tell-it-like-it-is "Who's Zoomin' Who" and "Jump to It." There's also a show-stopping rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream," the big number from the musical LES MISERABLES, and the brilliant crossover smash "Freeway of Love," an almost-rocker which introduced Aretha to the MTV generation. Seeds Of Love, The [Remastered]
This remastered version of THE SEEDS OF LOVE includes bonus tracks. Tears For Fears: Roland Orzabal, Curt Smith. Additional personnel includes: Oleta Adams (vocals, piano); Tessa Niles (vocals); Robbie McIntosh, Neil Taylor (guitar); Kate St. John (oboe, saxophone); Peter Hope Evans (harmonica); Jon Hassel (trumpet); Nicky Holland (piano, KurtzweilStrings, background vocals); Simon Clark (Hammond organ, synthesizer); Ian Stanley (Hammond organ); Pino Palladino (bass); Manu Katche, Phil Collins, Chris Hughes (drums); Carol Steele (percussion); Maggie Ryder, Dolette McDonald, Carole Kenyon (background vocals). Producers: Tears For Fears, David Bascombe. Reissue producer: Mike Gill. Includes liner notes by Richard Smith. Digitally remastered by Jon Astley and Chris Hughes (Close To The Edge). THE SEEDS OF LOVE completes a trilogy familiar to many careers: the tentative debut, the fully realized follow-up, and the grandiose third album. Four years in the making, it bears all the scars of struggle and indecision and is a fascinating account of a band torn between taking shelter in an MOR cocoon and fighting the zeitgeist that threatens to consign the band to the past. "Badman's Song" opts for safety, reveling in a sophisticated lethargy. "Sowing the Seeds Of Love" is an unashamed Beatles pastiche that predates Oasis' "All Over the World" by almost a decade, and the solemn "Woman in Chains" features Phil Collins whilst also introducing Oleta Adams. "Year of the Knife" is perhaps the focal point of the tension. Its admirable flamboyance makes for more fun than could be expected from a half-live, three-part, seven-minute swaggering rock & roll track packed with guitar solos. Each track is a five-minute-plus mini-drama with moments of delicacy and discomfort, restraint and excess, inspiration and creative exhaustion. As the last album to feature Curt Smith, it is a fitting end to an era. The 1998 remastered edition includes four bonus tracks. SKU: 4132518

Mothership Connection [Remastered]
Parliament: Bootsie Collins (vocals, guitar, bass, drums, percussion); Gary Shider, Glen Goins (vocals, guitar); George Clinton, Calvin Simon, Fuzzy Haskins, Raymond Davis, Grady Thomas (vocals); Michael Hampton (guitar); Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Boom, Joe Farrell (horns); Bernie Worrell (keyboards, synthesizer); Cordell Mosson (bass); Tiki Fullwood, Jerome Brailey (drums, percussion); Gary Cooper (drums, percussion, background vocals); Debbie Edwards, Taka Kahn, Archie Ivy, Bryna Chimenti, Rasputin Boutte, Pam Vincent, Debra Wright, Sidney Barnes. Recorded at Limited Sound, Detroit, Michigan and Hollywood Sound, Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by Tom Vickers (former P-Funk Minister Of Imformation). Parliament was one arm in George Clinton's funk army during the 70s, a large conglomeration of groups and musicians (including Bootsy's Rubber Band, Funkadelic, The Horny Horns and others) dedicated to rewriting the rules of funk, soul and rock. Clinton's bands sounded like James Brown gone mad, partly because of the inclusion of former JB sidemen Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley, but mostly because of the alternate universe they inhabited--a sort of drugged-out travelingsci-fi soul revue. MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION shows why Clinton's formula for funk domination of the free world worked so well. The music is tight and groovy, with heavy bass lines, precise horn runs and ultra-electronic keyboards (provided by Bernie Worrell). The lyrics are often no more than spaced-out spoken word excursions, sounding like Sly Stone reciting Isaac Asimov. And the whole concept and presentation was so totally freaked out that it would catch people off-guard, letting Clinton's teachings and philosophies seep into the unconscious. The most traditionally structured song is a love and bondage number called "Handcuffs," which shows how far Clinton and his P-Funkers had brought funk from the halcyon days of Otis Redding and James Brown. Songs like "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)" and "Tear The Roof Off The Sucker," with their extended interplay and dazed vocals, helped pave the way for the rise of hip hop as a commercial vehicle. Stuart Little II
Producers: Glen Brunman, Bonnie Greenberg-Goodman, Lia Vollack. The phrase "something for everyone" has seldom applied so perfectly as it does to the soundtrack of STUART LITTLE 2, the second installment in the cinematic exploits of everyone's favorite talking mouse. Suffice it to say that there has seldom been a single CD that runs the stylistic gamut to this extent. Things open witha bang courtesy of Celine Dion's anthemic, celebratory "I'm Alive" and Mary Mary's funked-up version of the classic "Put a Little Love in Your Heart." Before long, we're treated to Snowbell the cat (voiced by Nathan Lane") delivering a lounge-jazz version of the Three Dog Night hit "One," the Romantics' new wave/power pop nugget "What I Like About You," and Gilbert O'Sullivan's gorgeous ode to existential angst "Alone Again (Naturally)." If that's not diverse enough for you, throw in Steppenwolf's biker anthem "Born to be Wild" and a couple of lush orchestral pieces by film composer Alan Silvestri. If you can connect those sonic dots, you're a candidate for a MacArthur "genius" grant. SKU: 1073399

Uriah Heep Live 1973
Recorded live in England, January, 1973. Uriah Heep: David Byron (vocals); Mick Box (guitar); Ken Hensley (keyboards); Gary Thain (bass); Lee Kerslake (drums). As longtime Uriah Heep fans know, the band could really tear it up on stage during their '70s prime--and their 1973 release LIVE perfectly captures the band's in-concert excitement. Recorded at a tour stop in Birmingham, England during January of '73, the band cranks out high decibel renditions of many of their prog-metalmasterpieces. "Sunrise" proves to be just as intense and emotional in concert as the original studio version, while both "Sweet Lorraine" and "Easy Livin'" rock with the best of them. Uriah Heep's LIVE is a solid example of the whole early '70s in-concert hard rock experience. SKU: 1067701
