As a member of seminal indie alt-country outfit Freakwater, Catherine Irwin was already delving into the musical world of what critic Greil Marcus termed "the weird old America" when O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU was just a gleam in the Coen brothers' eyes. With Freakwater, Irwin merged alt-rock's postmodern, ironic attitude with the old-timey folk/country tradition. On her first solo album, recorded duringa time-out in Freakwater's career, Irwin concentrates more exclusively on the traditional end of things. CUT YOURSELF A SWITCH finds Irwin channeling the spirit of the Carter Family, Dock Boggs, et al. Working largely sans irony, Irwin achieves a purity of purpose here, but her no-frills indie background aids her in bringing a rawness to the style that's lacking in the work of many contemporary neo-bluegrass artists.

The Grateful Dead's first four albums reinforced their stature as a performing group, with a loose improvisational feel rooted in the blues, rock & roll, and modern jazz. But with the 1970 release of WORKINGMAN'S DEAD, Garcia, Weir, Lesh, McKernan, Kreutzmann, and Hart reined in their many spatial musical elements and found their true stylistic niche in the studio with an engaging blend of country, blues, and folk.
Where earlier studio releases strove to recreate the kind of freeform group improvisations that won the Dead a fanatical cult following in the Bay area, WORKINGMAN'S DEAD drew upon a rural American vernacular that was in many ways analogous to that of the Band. The resulting music has a rootsy, timeless quality, with tight instrumental arrangements, concise solo breaks, and a carefully wrought style of vocal harmonizing. The Dead won extensive airplay with tuneful songs like "Uncle John's Band" and "Casey Jones," while expanding their following well beyond San Francisco. Garcia's slithering pedal steel counterpoint and twangy banjo rolls make for a charismatic new style of bluegrass on "Dire Wolf" and "Cumberland Blues," while "New Speedway Boogie," featuring some of Robert Hunter's best lyrics, is a pointed personal metaphor for the tragic chaos at Altamont the summer before.

If in the kingdom of the pop ballad the chorus still reigns supreme, then Squeeze is sitting pretty in the pleasure palace. Despite being largely a cult success since the late '70s, the band hasn't lost its sense of fun or sacrificed its style in the face of the electronic revolution. Squeeze remains at heart the quintessential pop band, with fluffy riffs, music rich in appeal and variety, and lyrics to warm the cockles of any suburban heart.
Glenn Tilbrook's voice belies his age and still has the same home-grown tinge to it, occasionally doubled with the trademark octave vocals to hammer home thechorus hook. And while there's an overall sense that with the encroaching years that the pace of the band-members' lives has slowed, hints of mature crises appear, such as in "To Be a Dad" ("I went to the cleaners / And came back with my life"). The band turns in instrumental performances that put most modern acts to shame, and manages to explore some of the more complex harmonies to be found on the early 21st century British scene. This is honest pop with no hidden agenda, as appealing to the careful listener as it is to the casual.

After a five-year gap between albums (whichalso saw the split-up of Vega and her producer/husband Mitchell Froom), Suzanne Vega returned to the fray in 2001 with SONGS IN RED AND GRAY. Liberated from the trademark sound-stamp of Froom, Vega ventures into new sonic areas via the organic-but-inventive production of British journeyman Rupert Hine. From the angular, catchy "Widow's Walk" to the acoustic-oriented folk balladry of the anachronistic-sounding "Harbor Song," Vega's divorce obviously informs many of the lyrics here, but there are plenty of other topics at work.
"(I'll Never be) Your Maggie May" is an endearingly melodic folk-rocker that tackles the older woman-younger man issue from the opposite side of the fence from Rod Stewart, whose own song provides this one with a namesake. "If I Were A Weapon," with its insistent rhythm guitar and relentless rhythm uses the artillery metaphor to get at basic truths about the human psyche. Stepping away from her own material, Vega closes the album with a cover tune, "St. Clare," a gorgeous ballad written by New York underground folk legend Jack Hardy, an early mentor/supporter of Vega. It provides an elegant and touching end to an album full of raw emotions carefully sifted through surgically precise songwriting.

Another soundtrack that fared more favourably than the movie, 'Under The Cherry Moon', from which it came, this was alsothe record that marked Prince's return to the live arena. The record itself came with a high camp video and guaranteed hit in the shape of 'Kiss' (which a collaboration of Tom Jones and the Art Of Noise would later cover), a delightfully funky little number around which the world threatened to dance. Elsewhere, both 'Girls And Boys' and 'Anotherloverholenyohead' charted. While the lifting strains of 'Sometimes It Snows In April' rounded off a wonderfully whole album, nothing could quite save the film.

The anarchistic Sturm und Drang of Empire's popular Atari Teenage Riot project often overshadows the Digital Hardcore icon's chameleon-like solo career. Empire was originally the linchpin of Berlin's Force Inc. organization, a unique platform for "intelligent," anti-rave techno music. Prior to an ideological falling-outwith label head Achim Szepanski, the young, ambitious, innovative, and utterly uncompromising Empire was Force Inc's creative center, his influence galvanic for an experimental techno enterprise laboring beneath the Fascist heel of the rave hegemony.
LIMITED EDITIONS 1990-94, an essential document of German post-rave techno, collects Empire's earliest work for Force Inc's various outlets. The emphasis is on inventive melodies and charged, well-crafted, Detroit-style techno. Though more conservative than his later work, such tracks as "Sweet," "Chinese Takeaway," and "Silver Box" are effective and energetic, their impressively intricate programming clearly distancing Empire from the mono-rhythms of rave. "Suecide," "When Love Disappears," and "The Backside of My Brain" reflect Empire's growing fascination with non-traditional breakbeats and digi-dub deflections. The beatless "Limited 005" presents evocative electronic ripples and recedings, while the 13-minute "Civilization Virus" is an experimental tour de force in the ethno-ambient mold of Bill Laswell or Paul Schutze--a virtually orchestral storm of flutes, didgeridoo, and progressive "illbient" textures.

The oddly named Add N To X seem to lust after abiomechanical breakdown of the distinctions between man and machine. Coaxing salacious grooves out of vintage synthesizers and voice processors, this Sheffield trio forges futuristic aggro-electro from the sounds of robotics in revolt. Their affection for technology often borders on full-blooded fetishism. WIRES and NERVES are key words here, the constituents of the group's Cronenberg-ian miscegenation of technology and biology.
Grating white-noise sonics and bubblegum tunefulness make up the skeleton of a "Murmur One" or "Orgy Of Bubastus." The flagrant machine-funk of "The Black Regent" actually sounds like a cyber-pimp's misappropriation of Stevie Wonder's "Part Time Lover!" Such android anthems as "Nevermind," "Sir Ape," and the title track trip the oscillators fantastic, swinging like cybernetic arms locked in loving embrace. "Sound Of Accelerating Concrete," a seductive bleep-ballet for Ballard-struck automobile enthusiasts, even gets a little romantic--in a mechanically passionless sort of way. Creepy but charming, just like Add N To X.

After an extensive search for a producer, Rush struck gold with Peter Henderson. The band shared production duties with him, and completed the album within a few months. The continuous use of synthesizers and keyboards that began on the previous album, SIGNALS, is prominent here. Although Alex Lifeson's guitar always plays a key role, it's obvious the group could not shy away from the advancing technology in rock music in 1984.
The first single, "Distant Early Warning" is an excellent track that exudes a bleakness persistent throughout the record. "Afterimage" continues this dark outlook; the song is about a close friend of the band who dies in a car accident. "The Enemy Within" shows that fear is within us as opposed to being created externally and features the usual technical proficiency of drummer Neal Peart. Album closer "Between The Wheels" isa gloomy number about pressure and showcases Alex Lifeson's creative chord work. Underneath all the dark content in GRACE, there is a theme of hope. The band was considering breaking up at this point, and luckily didn't. The record features the trio's consistently tight musicianship and the keyboards enhance the songs instead of overshadowing them. Another fine record by the Canadian maestros.

This, their second album for Metal Blade, finds the Texas band sounding more confident and relaxed than previously. The songs here are slower and heavier, denser and fuller than King's X's characteristic metal; for instance, the opener, and overture, "Fish BowlMan," slips from a dissonant intro, to subtle beauty, to slow churning power and back.
Allowed complete creative control, and using its own recording studios and production know-how, King's X has created a small masterpiece. The stress-free atmosphere in the studio created free flowing easy songs sounding more than the sum of their parts, such as the Beatles-esque "She's Gone Away." Never a band to bow to commercialism, King's X isn't afraid to add snippets of spoken-word poetry to "Fish Bowl Man," or pen a gorgeous shimmering tune titled "Charlie Sheen." This album contains accomplished songwriting, beautiful melodies, three-part vocal harmonies and a huge full sound beyond the capabilities of many five- or six-piece bands.

Remarkably pale and frighteningly skinny--some artists shouldn't be allowed to pose for album covers with their shirts off--Johnny Winter is still a hell of a guitar player, and 1984's GUITAR SLINGER is among his best efforts. As the title suggests, Gonzalo Rubalacaba's INNER VOYAGE is a disc that finds the Cuban-born pianist digging deep within himself to bring out his most intimate performances on a series of very personal works. The focus here is on very peaceful, elegant ballads and lightly swinging numbers, along with the occasional fiery Latin piece--of course--on which Rubalcaba offers some of his most thoughtful playing. On most tunes he exhibits a gracefulness and sense of space not unlike the great BillEvans. The trio of Rubalcaba, bassist Jeff Chambers, and drummer Ignacio Berroa, who are joined on two pieces by the legendary Michael Brecker on saxophone, interact with great intimacy, seemly hanging on each other's every note. In all, this makes for a very pleasing set with highlights that include the gently rolling "Promenade"; the most intricate "The Hard One," which features Brecker in fine form; and a danceable read of the Ellington classic "Caravan."

Santana's initial trio of albums still sound incredibly alive and exciting. ABRAXAS is the best of the three as it imbues the Latin fusion of their debut with smooth edges. The relaxed opening elegantly slips into "Black Magic Woman," the finest ever interpretation of a Peter Green song. "Se A Cabo," "El Nicoya" and the memorable "Oye Como Va" give us the quota of Latin rock. They burst onto the scene at the onset of the '80s with a majestic, uplifting, earnest approach and a unique textural sound that endeared them to fans and critics alike. Fittingly, the album begins with the debut's "I Will Follow" a statement of commitment to pursuing truth and spirituality despite continual and inevitable misgivings. "Desire" mates Bono's lyrical fervor with a modified Bo Diddley beat to fine effect. New world meets old on the bluesy B.B. King collaboration "When Love Comes to Town." Closingthings out, "All I Want is You" shows the moody, reflective side of the band, giving Bono a chance to croon and the rest of the band to exhibit the understated side of their instrumental might.

Milt Jackson's image is set in stone for many as the vibes master of the Modern Jazz Quartet, playing a classy, cerebral variation on bop. In his solo recordings, though, Milt tended to leave the tuxedo in the closet and offer a less rarified, more swinging bebop sound. While this 1974 CTI release doesn't sport the amped-up jazz funk of the label's contemporaneous releases, it contains just as much energy and emotion. Jackson's vibes work is dazzling but never flashy, as he bounces off Cedar Walton's piano and especially Hubert Laws's flute in compositions that move from insistent swing to poignant contemplation with no disruption of tone or momentum. The title tune that closes out the album features some of Jackson's most lyrical soloing over mid-tempo backing that's at once buoyant and sympathetic.
