War All The Time
Thursday includes: Geoff Rickly (vocals); Steve Pedulla, Tom Keeley (guitar, background vocals); Andrew Everding (keyboards); Tim Payne (bass, backgroundvocals); Tucker Rule (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Big Blue Meenie, Jersey City, New Jersey and Longview Farm Studios, North Brookfield, Massachusetts. With WAR ALL THE TIME, former underground New Jersey sensation Thursday storms into the mainstream. Diehard fans will be pleased to discover that the leap to a major label hasn't softened the band's approach. If anything, it sounds like the members of Thursday worked extra hard to ensure that the band's vision would remain wholly intact. Kicking off with the thunderous, daring "For the Workforce, Drowning," singer/lyricist Geoff Rickly firmly establishes himself as one of rock-and-roll's most distinct voices. "Division St." and "Signals over the Air" capture the skillful synergy between guitarists Steve Pedulla and Tom Keeley. But it is "Marches and Maneuvers" that best encapsulates Thursday as a band. Hyperemotional and sensitive, yet abrasive and forceful, the song uses war metaphors to dissect a deteriorating relationship. Rickly maintains this war theme throughout, whether addressing religion or suicide or depression, resulting in an album that is passionate, challenging, and deeply affecting. SKU: 1087087

Undiscovered Soul
Personnel includes: Richie Sambora (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, handclaps); Mark Goldenberg (guitar, handclaps); Chuck Leavell (piano, electric piano); Greg Phillinganes (piano, background vocals); David Paitch (electric piano, synthesizer); Rami Jaffee (Hammond B3 organ, accordion, hand claps); Billy Preston (Hammond B-3 organ, background vocals); Robbie Buchanan (synthesizer); Jamie Muhoberac (synthesizer programming); Don Was (bass, Wurlitzer, handclaps); Pino Paladino (fretless bass); Kenny Aronoff (drums, percussion, handclaps); Paulinho da Costa (percussion); James "Hutch" Hutchinson (background vocals, bass, handclaps); Myrna Smith, Portia Griffin, Sweet Pea Atkinson, Harry Bowens, Hook (background vocals); Richie Supa. On this, his second solo album, Richie Sambora attempts to step out of the shadow of his vocalist/movie star co-writer. He does a fine job of it, as his singingand guitar playing have definitely evolved from his earlier work. UNDISCOVERED SOUL is a very personal, heartfelt album full of emotion and passion. The album consists of mostly mid-tempo, acoustic-based songs, going more for feel than flash. In other words, Bon Jovi fans shouldn't expect any lighning-fingered, '80s heavy metal solos here. Improving upon his blues-based debut release, Sambora combines the aforementioned mid-tempo tunes with soulful ballads. He has lined up a stellar band to get the job done, including Kenny Aronoff (arguably the finest technical drummer in rock), Don Was (who also produces), Billy Preston and Chuck Leavell. All in all, an excellent sophomore effort from a guitarist who deserves his time to shine. SKU: 1003142

Mister Heartbreak
Personnel: Laurie Anderson (vocals, violin, synthesizer, percussion); Nile Rodgers (guitar); Bill Blaber (soprano saxophone); Bill Laswell (bass); Anton Fier (drums, percussion); David Van Tieghem (drums, electronic & acoustic percussion); Daniel Ponce (percussion); Sang Won Park (kayagum); Atsuko Yuma, Connie Harvey, Janet Wright (background vocals). Producers: Bill Laswell, Roma Baran, Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson. Recorded at The Lobby, RCA, A&R, and 39th Street Music, New York, New York. A textured and kaleidoscopic bag of surprises by this supremely innovative musician and performance artist, Mister Heartbreak is a distinctively appealing release. Employing her Synclavier andthe help of guest musicians (who include, among others, Peter Gabriel, William Burroughs, Adrian Belew, Phoebe Snow and Nile Rogers), Anderson's songs project thrilling, exotic environments through which sonic effects and fragments of poetic narrative float like ghosts. At once uber-technological and organic (one envisions a cyborg wandering through a rainforest), Anderson's work reinvents biblical mythology (the slippery retelling of Adam and Eve in "Langue d'Amour"), gumshoe noir ("Sharkey's Night") and strive toward, in her synthesis of tribal percussion, bird calls and natural sounds, a reinterpretation of indigenous music. At times these tracks seem less like songs than "texts" meant to be read by the ear: evocative, varied and ambiguous. But they are beautiful music as well, and as such draw the listener into this richly imagined, artfully constructed album. SKU: 5059884

Sand And Water
Personnel: Beth Nielsen Chapman (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric slide dulcimer, slide whistle, keyboards); Michael McDonald (vocals); Bonnie Raitt (vocals, guitar, dobro); Steuart Smith, Dominic Miller, Pat Buchanan, Larry Chaney (guitar); Sam Bush, Jonathan Yudkin (mandolin); Jelly Roll Johnson (harmonica); Tim Lauer (accordion); Annie Roboff (bandoneon); Mike Haynes (trumpet); Barry Walsh, Matt Rollings, Kevin Savigar, Steve Nathan, Mike Utley (keyboards);Michael Rhodes, Dave Pomeroy (bass); Kirby Shelsted, Brian Barnett, Paul Leim, Jim Keltner (drums, percussion); Kim Fleming, Bill Lloyd (background vocals). Producers: Rodney Crowell, Beth Nielsen Chapman. Singer-songwriter Beth Nielsen Chapman brings her distinctly thoughtful, intelligent lyrics and acoustic folk style to the subjects of grief, loss, and healing on SAND AND WATER. Chapman, whose husband died of cancer in 1994, manages an amazing feat on this album, exposing her most tender and raw emotions with complete candor and without a hint of self-pity or maudlin sentimentality. Despite its deeply felt sadness, SAND AND WATER is also full of joy and life. The slightly exotic, percussive "Beyond The Blue" addresses a lost loved one, depicting death as a wonderful journey rather than a dark or frightening one. SAND AND WATER is filled with heartbreaking glimpses of a very personal, aching loss, yet somehow Chapman transcends the grief and moves toward a new appreciation for what it means to be alive. Axis: Bold As Love [Remastered]
This 1997 reissue of AXIS: BOLD AS LOVE is a newly remastered version that restores theoriginal album artwork. It includes a 24-page booklet with previously-unpublished photos and song lyrics. It is among the first batch of albums on Experience Hendrix, a new label controlled by Hendrix's family. The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, electic guitar); Noel Redding (vocals, bass); Mitch Mitchell (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, England. Originally released on Reprise. Includes liner notes by Jym Fahey. AXIS: BOLD AS LOVE was the follow-up to ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?, and represented a much more conscious use of the recording studio's possibilities. Where his live shows continued to showcase the raw rocking power of the Experience, the recording studio gave Hendrix the composer/arranger a broader palette. There are still plenty of powerful blues/rock-inflected songs, such as the menacing "If 6 Was 9," the rolling "Spanish Castle Magic" and the spatial title tune. But "Up From The Skies" is a jazzy trio romp, featuring Hendrix's bluesy, vocalized wah-wah pedal. And on the ballads "Little Wing" and "Castles Made Of Sand," Hendrix shifts the focus from the band to the silvery chord/melody accompaniments he often employed to complement his vocals. They are an orchestral effect unto themselves. SKU: 1005934

Moseley Shoals
Ocean Colour Scene: Simon Fowler (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica); Steve Cradock (vocals, guitar, piano); Oscar Harrison (vocals, piano, drums); DamonMinchella (bass). Additional personnel: Paul Weller (guitar, piano, organ, background vocals). Producers: Brendan Lynch, Ocean Colour Scene. Recorded at Moseley Shoals Studio, Birmingham, England. Includes liner notes by Brendan Lynch. Riding on a crest of late 60s retro rock, this band have received a disproportionate dollop of criticism since their considerable success with this, their second album. Revealing influences ranging from 10CC and the Idle Race ('The Day We Caught The Train') to the Love Affair and Beatles ('The Circle'), the derivative nature of this record is nevertheless highly palatable. Even a Randy Newman soundalike rears up in 'Lining Your Pockets' and Eric Clapton's Disraeli Gears wah-wah guitar can also be found liberally sprinkled throughout ('The Riverboat Song', 'Policeman & Pirates'). A necessary album for anyone with a magpie complex. SKU: 1004936

One Size Fits All
Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Napoleon Murphy Brock (vocals, flute, tenor saxophone); George Duke (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Johnny "Guitar" Watson (vocals); Bloodshot Rollin' Red (harmonica); Ruth Underwood (marimba, vibraphone, percussion); Tom Fowler, James Youman (bass); Chester Thompson (drums). Recorded between December 1974 and April 1975. Digitally remastered by Bob Stone. More than any of his other mid-'70s albums, ONE SIZE forecasts the direction Zappa would take in the '80s with the Ike Willis/Steve Vai/Chad Wackerman incarnation of his band, tackling socio-political issues while essaying virtousic jazz/rock/classical fusion with unprecedented facility. Aided by long-timers George Duke and Ruth Underwood as well as powerhouse fusion drummer Chester Thompson, Zappa turns out eight extended pieces that combine grand ensemble work with fiery solos (mostly from Zappa himself) and satirical lyrics that trade Zappa's former goofiness for a more incisive approach. On tracks like "Inca Roads" (arguably ONE SIZE's centerpiece), Zappa ventures into the realm of artsong; Duke's keyboards and Underwood's marimba navigate tricky time signatures, extended melodic lines and adventurous harmonic structures without ever sounding academic. Zappa's soloing, often coloredby effects, is at a high point here, highly evolved but not yet marred by the excesses of his latter-day output. SKU: 1003015

Hearts And Bones [Remastered]
Personnel: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar, drum programming); The Harptones (vocals); Dean Parks, Eric Gale, Al DiMeola, Nile Rodgers, Sid McGuiness (guitar); Marin Alsop (violin); Jill Jaffee (viola); Jesse Levy, Frederick Zlotkin (cello); Carol Wincenc (flute); George Marge (bass clarinet); Mark Rivera (alto saxophone); Peter Gordon (French horn); Greg Phillinganes, Richard Tee (Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer); Rob Sabino (keyboards, synthesizer); Rob Mounsey (synthesizer, vocoder); Mike Boddiker, Michael Reisman (synthesizer); David Nichtern (Synclavier, programming); Tom Coppola, Wells Christie (Synclavier); Mike Manieri (vibraphone, marimba); Anthony Jackson (triple contra-bass); MarcusMiller, Bernard Edwards (bass guitar); Jeff Porcaro, Steve Ferrone, Steve Gadd (drums); Airto Moreira (percussion). Producers: Roy Halee; Paul Simon; Russ Titelman. Casual listeners view GRACELAND as a comeback/rejuvenation for Simon, not realizing that throughout his recording career, he never stopped growing, with each album expanding on the artistic advances of the previous one. HEARTS AND BONES was the last link in the chain that led to the epiphany of GRACELAND, the adventurous bridge between that album and the poetic insights of ONE TRICK PONY. Simon hadn't yet given himself over to the impressionistic, non-linear lyrical style he would eventually pursue, but here he invests his more traditional story-telling lyrics with a high degree of poetic imagery. The arrangements are equally imaginative. The moving title tune, which details the breakup of Simon's marriage to actress Carrie Fisher, moves from a folky, acoustic feel to a sensuous, swaying rhythm and back, seamlessly. The witty "Allergies" calls on the services of an unlikely guest, Al Dimeola, to provide guitar pyrotechnics that perfectly capture the song's claustrophobic panic. As always, there are several elegant, harmonically brilliant ballads, such as the evocative "Rene & Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After The War." Only Simon could attach such a beautiful tune to such a pretentious title. HEARTS AND BONES is a vital, criminally underlooked part of the Paul Simon catalog. SKU: 6564905

Anthem (+DVD) [ECD] [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Less Than Jake: Chris (vocals, guitar); Roger (vocals, bass); JR (saxophone); Buddy (trombone); Vinnie (drums). Additional personnel: Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards); Luis Conte (percussion); Heather Tabor (background vocals). Recorded at Piety Street Recording, New Orleans, Louisiana and Morning View Studio, Malibu, California between October and December 2002. Still soldiering on in 2003 afterspending the prior decade being overlooked by the commercial masses during the pop-punk revolution, Less Than Jake hits the ground running with ANTHEM and its collection of songs touching on the insecurity and social woes afflicting the band's core teen audience. When this Florida quintet isn't bashing out songs about a girl on the verge of a nervous breakdown ("She's Gonna Break Soon") or lacking faith in yourself ("The Science of Selling Yourself Short") they're keeping the mood suitably bleak by singing about lacking direction in life ("The Upwards War and the Down Turned Cycle"). Amid all this doom-and-gloom, horn players Buddy and JR give the proceedings a peppy edge with a one-two punch that accentuates Less Than Jake's ska influences, particularly on the caffeinated "Plastic Cup Politics" and Mighty Mighty Bosstones-flavored "Look What Happened." Even though Less Than Jake take an unusually serious approach towards ANTHEM, this former Bon Jovi opening act manages to inject some levity by including a bonus cover of "Surrender" and doing Cheap Trick proud. I Say, I Say, I Say
Erasure:Andy Bell (vocals); Vince Clarke (various instruments). Additional personnel: The Choir Of St. Patrick's Cathedral (background vocals). Engineers: Andy Houston, Al Stone, Phil Legg. Recorded at Studio 142, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Windmill Lane, Dublin, Ireland; The Church, London, England; 37B, The United Kingdom. Erasure's first full album for three years, 1994's I SAY I SAY I SAY is a mature, often melancholy effort. It builds on previous gems like CHORUS and WILD! by amplifying those albums' ruminative lyrics and melodic richness while downplaying the Hi-NRG dance pop of the duo's earliest records. Andy Bell's lyrics are personal and thoughtful, with bittersweet nostalgia coloring many of the songs. In this context, even the cheerful "I Love Saturday" seems a little melancholy. Surprisingly, "Always," a poignant lost-love tale with an odd, almost discordant melody, was an American hit single. "Because You're So Sweet," is one of the duo's most beautiful songs, and the church choir on "So the Story Goes," and "Miracle," sounds perfectly integrated with Bell and Vince Clarke's quietly soulful tunes. Best Of Van Morrison Vol.1, The [Remastered]
Includes songs from Van Morrison's days with the group Them (1964-66) and his solo career. Personnel includes: Van Morrison (vocals, guitar); Cliff Richard (vocals); Them. Producers include: Van Morrison, Robbie Robertson, Bert Berns, Dick Rowe, Lewis Merenstein. Engineers include: Mick Glossop. Digitally remastered by Ian Cooper & Tim Young (Metropolis Mastering,London, England). They very wisely opted against calling this GREATEST HITS for obvious reasons, yet such a good package of songs only highlights the fact that they all could have been massive hits. Maybe it's becaus Van is a very private man and unlike Phil Collins or Eric Clapton, does not grant interviews often. Yet he is up there with the greatest of all time. His catalogue is one of the finest in popular music, and in choosing a best of CD the choice will be ultra subjective. This gets near to the mark, even though there is no "Madame George," "Listen To The Lion" or "Tupelo Honey." There we are again, purely subjective. The alternative is to have a standing order made out to purchase one Van Morrison album for the next 24 months. SKU: 5071896

Live In Concert
Procol Harum: Gary Brooker (vocals, piano); Mick Grabham (guitar); Chris Copping (organ); Alan Cartwright (bass); B.J. Wilson (drums); Keith Reid. Recorded live at The Hippodrome, Golders Green, London, England on March 22, 1974. Includes liner notes by Roland Clare. Given the only sporadic availability of LIVE IN CONCERT WITH THE EDMONTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and the dearth of any other official live releases, tapes of this March 1974 concert have long been coveted by Procol Harum fans. The Beeb had yet to wise up to the commercial value of it sessions and concerts, deeming it unnecessary to retain master tapes, so don't expect a more sophisticated mix to that which was originally aired. However, you do get the bonus of "Bringing Home the Bacon," which was squeezed out of the original hour-long broadcast. Opening withits then-most-recent hit, "Conquistador," the band concentrates on promoting its then-current EXOTIC BIRDS AND FRUIT. The set is interspersed with a handful of tracks from the band's previous two albums, plus the perennial "Whaling Stories" from HOME. This most stable of Procol lineups acquits itself well, particularly on "As Strong as Samson," "Grand Hotel," and "Nothing But the Truth." SKU: 1025644

Untouchables [PA]
This isan Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Korn: Jonathan Davis (vocals); James Shaffer, Brian "Head" Welch (guitar); Fieldy (bass); David Silveria (drums). Recorded at Conway Studio, Hollywood, California and The Village, Los Angeles, California. "Here To Stay" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. After THE UNTOUCHABLES, Korn can never again be accused of sounding like Limp Bizkit. Though in the past, they've often been lumped in with the likes of the Biz due to their penchant for mixing hip-hop and heavy metal, UNTOUCHABLES represents a step forward. Part of the reason may be the involvement of producer Michael Bienhorn, who old-timers will recall as a founding member of early-'80s avant rock/funk/jazz outfit Material. Whether its Bienhorn's influence or just the band's desire to progress (we're betting on a combo of both), the songs here are full of carefully delineated and sung melodies (though Jonathan Davis's sore throat from hell won't bring Frank Sinatra to mind any time soon). The attack of the guitars and drums is just as unrelenting as before, but the expanded song structures and grooves (somebody's been listening to early Killing Joke) will put the lie to all the naysayers who consigned these guys to the nu-metal scrapheap in the past. Regatta De Blanc [SACD]
The Police: Sting (vocals, bass); Stewart Copeland (vocals, drums); Andy Summers (guitar). Recorded at Surrey Sound Studio, England. The career of the Police was planned, controlled and timed to perfection. The three talented individuals probably always knew that they would attempt to conquer the world and then disappear to pursue their own musical interests. This is the second of their five albums and contains two number 1 hits. Both are interesting little vignettes from themind of Sting; 'Walking On The Moon', where he pleads 'I hope my legs don't break', and 'Message In A Bottle', which has a similarly desperate theme, with Sting observing 'seems I'm not alone in being alone, 100 billion castaways looking for a home'. Sting's theories do still hold water. SKU: 6515620

That's Him
Personnel: Abbey Lincoln (vocals); Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Kenny Dorham (trumpet); Wynton Kelly (piano, bass); Paul Chambers (bass); Max Roach (drums). Recorded at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, New York on October 28, 1957. Originally released on Riverside (251). Includes original liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. This 1957 release marked Abbey's first early peak. It's a wonderful and confident set with a stunning ensemble: Sonny Rollins on tenor sax and Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Wynton Kelly on piano, and a rhythm section of Paul Chambers on bass and Max Roach on drums. Lincoln opens with Oscar Brown Jr.'s "Strong Man"--Lincoln was one of the performers who regularly recorded his songs prior to his own debut as a recording artist in the early '60s. Kelly in particular is a wonderfully supportive accompanist, dancingaround her with grace and style. The gorgeous and dramatic "Tender as a Rose" is presented acapella. Throughout, Lincoln's singing easily mingles jazz, blues and folk influences and phrasings. This strong album pointed the way to her ABBEY IS BLUE, her essential work recorded two years later. Live In Tokyo
LIVE IN TOKYO (1983), the second live Public Image Limited album in three years, presents the listener with a different side of the band. The PIL captured here is very energetic. Even more surpisingly, John Lydon seems interested in having the audience like him. After castigating Christianity in "Religion," he goes so far as to greet his audience--in Japanese! Clearly riding on the chart success of "(This is Not a) Love Song," Lydon and Company's live version, the record's standout track, incites the previously quiet audience to sing along. The crowd continues to do just that, even after the song has concluded. In turn, the band plays a repriseof a few choruses for the fans. During the second half of LIVE IN TOKYO--"Death Disco," "Bad Life," "Banging the Door," and "Under the House"--the audience's excitement at the dynamic workouts given to their PIL favorites is mirrored in the band's enthusiastic performance. This is especially true on the last track, which, though shortened considerably from the studio version, features amazing drumming from Martin Atkins. SKU: 4122721

Musicology [Digipak] [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Candy Dulfer (saxophone, horns, background vocals); Maceo, Greg (horns); Renato Neto (Fender Rhodes piano); Rhonda Smith (bass, background vocals); John Blackwell (drums); Sheila E. (shaker); Claire Fischer (samples); Chance, Stokeley, Kip (background vocals); Ornella Bonaccorsi. Recorded at Paisely Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota; Metal Works Studio, Canada; The Hit Factory, New York, New York. In 1996, Prince parted ways with his longtime label Warner Brothers, inaugurating his own label and proceeding to do whatever he pleased for several years--three-disc sets, all-instrumental mood-music albums, declarations of his Jehovah's Witnesses creed, and more. While there was plenty of fine music made along that journey, much of it tended to slip through thecracks. In 2004, newly inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and signed to Columbia, Prince stood ready for a comeback with MUSICOLOGY. Accordingly, the album is his most concise since the early '90s, a punchy, funky return to form. On the title track, he pledges allegiance to old-school funk, both lyrically and musically, with propulsive results. From there, he ventures into slow jams, pop-rock, jazzy R&B, even political commentary. Whether he's turning out complex, Zappa-like harmonies or sweet soul music, Prince sounds fully committed on MUSICOLOGY, providing most of the vocals and instruments himself and displaying a clarity of purpose that should rekindle a fire in the hearts of wayward fans.
