This compilation of original Verve sessions (spanning '47-'53) comes highly recommended, not only for its earful of superb musicianship from the creators of modern jazz, but for the sound quality of the recordings. Many Parker releases, culled from poorly engineered live recordings or audience bootlegs, require tolerating so much sonic hiss and extraneous noise that it distances and distracts from the enjoyment. Not so with these Verve tracks, which are astonishingly clear and well-balanced throughout, highlighting Parker's dazzling technique and full, incisive tone to good measure.
Joined by the likes of Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, Thelonious Monk and Max Roach, among others, Bird and ensemble blaze through versions of "Mohawk," "Now's The Time," and "Laird Baird" (which Parker dedicated to his son). Those allergic to orchestral arrangements should be forewarned that several tracks, including "Laura," "April in Paris," and "Just Friends" (which includes the solo Parker reputedly claimed was his own favorite), are string-laden. Parker's playing transcends all, however, and THE ORIGINAL RECORDINGS is an outstanding collection for fansand newcomers alike.

Lauryn Hill of Fugees, Erick Sermon and Redman are among those who assist on the mic, lending a fresh sound to familiar tracks. The beats are sativa-heavy with haunted orchestrations: sweet strings, fuzzed jazz (trumpets, saxes) and droning keyboards. A stoner paranoia permeates the previously-unreleased "Whatta You Know" and the Tribe Called Quest remix of "Illusions." "Hits From The Bong" percolates through a slow, deliberate haze. After a brief retirement from the mid- to late-'70s (during which time Van Vliet devoted himself to painting), Captain Beefheart (a.k.a. Don Van Vliet) brought together a solid new Magic Band to record SHINY BEAST. The original tapes were recorded by Frank Zappa, but have never been released (the parenthetical part of the album's name was its original title). SHINY BEAST is the re-recorded 1979 release.
It marked the beginning of a solid three-album return for the Captain. DOC AT THE RADAR STATION and ICE CREAM FOR CROW followed before Beefheart finally stopped music for good, concentrating solely on hisvisual art (and ultimately finding a measure of financial success that eluded him in music). This may be one of the easier entry points for anyone daunted by the gorgeously dense complexities of his early classics. It's all here: the bluesiness, the verbal wordplay, the ecological concerns, the whole shimmeringly rhythmic onslaught that is the Magic Band.

Having blown the music world's mind with the Mothers, Frank Zappa made a left turn to indulge his childhood love of doo-wop. Recording with the rest of the Mothers, he created CRUISING WITH RUBEN & THE JETS, an album of "greasy love songs and cretin simplicity." It is also an album of authentically performed doo-wop songs that might have even been hits had they been recorded a decade earlier. From the falsetto voicesinging of unrequited love, street-corner background harmonies and "Earth Angel"- styled narratives in "Love Of My Life " and "Deseri" to the questionable production values, Zappa accurately recreated the doo-wop sound. You've got to hand it to pioneering singer-songwriter James Taylorfor staying the course decade after decade. His 2002 release OCTOBER ROAD is so much of a piece with his previous work that it wouldn't have sounded out of place as a follow-up to his 1970 breakthrough album SWEET BABY JAMES. The laid-back phrasing, slightly jazzy acoustic guitar chords, artful-but-humble lyrical themes, it's all there. Though the elements that make up the Taylor sound are never far away, OCTOBER ROAD is not just a rewrite of past glories. "Belfast to Boston," with its pennywhistle and (synthesized) bagpipes, is an ostensibly Celtic-themed song about the tragedies of war and hatred, but the song manages to be subtly relevant to its post-9/11 emergence. The good-humored "Mean Old Man" is a Taylor original that sounds like a jazz standard, partly thanks to the work of famed jazzers Larry Goldings (piano) and John Pizzarelli (guitar). While Taylor occasionally indulges himself in a little polite R&B bounce, though, the bulk of OCTOBER ROAD is cloaked in the gentle, contemplative folk-rock style that those familiar with the man's oevure will have no problem cozying up to.

It is hard to believe that Tom Petty first stepped onto the rock& roll carousel eighteen years ago. Hard to believe because the best moments of his sizable catalog--the perfect guitar pop of "American Girl," the faux-psychedelia of "Don't Come Around Here No More," the sharp-tongued putdowns like "Century City" and "Zombie Zoo"--have all developed a rare timeless quality. A quality that few, if any, of his contemporaries (Eddie Money, the Cars, etc.) were able to achieve. Harder, still, because in the course of his long career we've never noticed Petty gettin' on in years or becoming an anachronism.
So it is somehow appropriate that on WILDFLOWERS, his second "solo" ride without the full complement of the Heartbreakers, Petty's musings fall predominantly toward his current role in the world. Throughout these reflections Tom Petty plays the kid's game he's been good at for years ("but let me get to the point, let's roll another joint" he sneers knowingly in "You Don't Know How It Feels"). More often than not, the future the songwriter envisions for himself is full of doubts ("Time To Move On") and soon-to-be-dull memories ("Don't Fade On Me"). This makes WILDFLOWERS speak in a far more subdued and wistful tone than most Petty records, creating a darker self-conscious persona.
Tom Petty understands that he's far too established to keep playing a rebellious, one-dimensional rock & roll singer. On WILDFLOWERS he attempts to ground this understanding in a purposeful existence.

The first album from the greatest musical poet of the 20th century gave little indication of what was to come. Although released in 1962, it reeks of the 50s folk/protest movement. Many of the standards covered by Dylan had been sung by a thousand troubadours throughout the McCarthy era and the anti-war movement. Dylan sings like an innocent angel, and makes Eric Von Schmidt's lusty "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down" sound sweet. The seeds of greatness were apparent in the sensitive original "Song To Woody," asadly overlooked entry in the massive Dylan catalogue. A wonderful exercise in what was then and what is not now.

Between 1940 and 1952, folk legend Woody Guthrie recorded over 300 songs for the equally legendary folk producer Moses Asch. In 1997, Smithsonian Folkways released the first of four CDs chronicling the musical partnership between these two men, initiating in the process the definitive collection of Guthrie compositions and recordings. THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND is the first and most accessible of the volumes, including many of Guthrie's most popular songs.
Among the titles found on THIS LAND are the title track, "Philadelphia Lawyer," (later a hit for Rose Maddox), "Hobo's Lullaby," "Jesus Christ," "Do Re Mi," "Grand Coulee Dam," and "Pastures of Plenty." Some of the lesser-known tracks are primarilyof historical interest (such as a song tearing into Charles Lindbergh's opposition to U.S. entry into World War II), while others stand the test of time remarkably well. Three versions of the title song appear, among them a take (long presumed to be lost) including the famous "anti-private property" verse. Guthrie infuses his songs with ample servings of wit, which helps the politics go down smooth and easy.

The peculiarly packaged A SHORT ALBUM ABOUT LOVE is available as three separate CD singles or as a single box set that contains all three CDs. The album is the musically, lyrically, and conceptually unified effort suggestedby the simple and descriptive title. Recorded in New York City and backed by a 30-piece orchestra, the album allows Irish singer/songwriter Neil Hannon--The Divine Comedy's only constant member--to give full rein to his art-pop fantasies. The orchestral arrangements give Hannon's songs the lush romanticism he'd reached toward on earlier albums like LIBERATION and PROMENADE, and his wry, ironic lyrics are particularly well suited for the backing. A SHORT ALBUM ABOUT LOVE recalls Hannon's obvious heroes, '60s cabaret-pop weirdo Scott Walker and the brilliant though deliberately provocative French jazz-pop genius Serge Gainsbourg, as well as more recent pop artists like Momus, the Monochrome Set, and the Magnetic Fields.

While the songs used for the actual soundtrack to Michael Moore's unprecedentedly successful anti-George W. Bush documentary FAHRENHEIT 9/11 were not all explicitly political (many were used for more strategic narrative purposes), the companion disc SONGS AND ARTISTS THAT INSPIRED FAHRENHEIT 9/11 is a different story altogether. The bulk of the songs very directly address topics central to the film (war, jingoism, political activism, et al). Thus, we have Bruce Springsteen delivering a heartfelt live version of Bob Dylan's early ballad "Chimes of Freedom," Dylan himself performing his classic anti-war tune "With God on Our Side," and Pearl Jam's live take on yet another great Dylan protest song, "Masters of War."
Lest you think this is strictly a Dylan-fest, there's much more to be found here. Steve Earle offers the rabble-rousing rocker "The Revolution Starts Now," there's a live John Fogerty recording of his fire-breathing CCR gem "Fortunate Son," and the Black Eyed Peas even team up with Justin Timberlake for the tenderness plea "Where Is the Love" Though Moore's film didn't affect the 2004 election the way he'd hoped, it made plenty of people stand up and notice, as will this"soundtrack sequel."

Rumors abounded that Komputer was actually Kraftwerk in disguise. As Komputer's first two EPs were dead ringers for Mssrs. Hutter and Schneider's historical templates, it's easy to have made such a mistake. Mirroring groove for groove and blip for blip, vocalist David Baker sing-speaks Komputer's techno-pop fascination with Bill Gates, automation, and geography in the same Vocoder-inflected monotone ol' Ralf H. soldered onto many a surging power plant beat.
Granted, Komputer might not have the crackling inventiveness laid down by its Krautrock ancestors. Yet THE WORLD OF TOMORROW, Komputer's debut album exudes not only a quaint charm but also a fairly sharp predilection for melody and an obvious taste for metallic digi-rhythms. The caressing buzz-and-bop of "Looking Down on London" and "Valentina" twirls the lobes a notchor two, and "Komputer Pop" is simply, well, ravishing sequencer bubble-gum nonstop. Until the 'Werk plugs into the network again, list Komputer at the top of your hit parade for endless doppelgangin' pleasure.

In 1980, after almost single-handedly inventing the "Goth" genrewith their debut single, "Bela Lugosi's Dead," Bauhaus recorded IN THE FLAT FIELD for England's influential 4AD label. This CD retains the rather original album's rather daring cover art (a nude male figure) but adds eight tracks from early singles (though not "Belaa," unfortunately) to the 4AD issue's nine. IN THE FLAT FIELD is classic and influential, a deadly combination.
Though Bauhaus may be labeled as "Goth," the pealing feedback that opens the disc ("Dark Entries") and the anguished howl in the first line of "Double Dare" ("I dare you to be real!") prove that they arrive with the same punk rock pedigree as many of their contemporaries. Peter Murphy's vocals very nearly dominate the proceedings. By turns, he declaims, wails, and sings-even speaking in tongues on "Stigmata Martyr." His lyrics draw from popular culture, from Greek mythology, and from everything in between. The rhythm section of brothers David Jay (bass) and Kevin Haskins (drums) provides a flexible but extremely forceful backbone to Daniel Ash's squalling, often distorted, guitar sound. Make no mistake. This is a rock record-and one of the best, at that.

Though 1970 brought LOADED and (relative) commercial success for the Velvets, it also saw the beginning of their decline. Apparent commercial concessions and interpersonal tensions had already begun to tear the band apart at the seams. Their real peak came the year before, when--finding themselves halfway between artiness and pop pursuits--they dived headlong into amphetamine-fueled, minimalist-influenced proto-punk. The European influence had lessened with the departure of John Cale, allowing the VU to become a pure rock & roll band of unprecedented fervor.
From the strung-out stomp of "Waiting For My Man" to the churning, perversely repetitious rhythms of "What Goes On" and the ironically revelatory "I'm Beginning To See The Light" the band blares away with such determinism it sounds like they're trying to bore a hole through the bottom of the stage. This live recording sees the fruition of their structural collectivist ethic; there are essentially no solos or improvisations, and yet they jamon the progressions of many of the songs for several minutes, allowing minute changes in dynamics to substitute for melodic/harmonic explorations. One of the finest live albums you'll hear, this is rock at its purest and most functional.

Public Enemy springs back into action with this album, which doubles as the soundtrack to Spike Lee's film. Reuniting the original Bomb Squad production team of Hank & Keith Shocklee, Eric Sadler and Gary G-Wiz with Flavor Flav, Professor Griff and Terminator X makes for an impressive mix of styles and songs.In classic Public Enemy fashion, sampling is timely and well used.
The title cut features a sample from the Buffalo Springfield classic "For What It's Worth," as well as a newly recorded performance from Steven Stills. As such, it is Public Enemy's most radio friendly, commercial song to date. "Unstoppable" is a collaboration between PE and KRS-One. Producer Gary G-Wiz brings the two most pioneering rappers in history together for the first time on his underground head-banger. On "House of the Rising Sun," producer Kerwin Young makes clever use of a sample from The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again." On the surface, HE GOT GAME is a soundtrack, but closer inspection reveals a classic PE album.

Sure, he's mellowed someover the years. He'd probably have been dead a long time ago if he didn't. Sure he's singing songs with French titles ("N'oubliez Jamais") amid lush string and horn arrangements. But he's still Joe Cocker, damn it. He still knows how to pick a cover tune, too. This time around it's not "With A Little Help From My Friends" or "The Letter" that he recasts into a new, soulful image, but Bob Marley's "Could You Be Loved" and Squeeze's "Loving You Tonight," which seem tailor-made for the Cocker treatment. He's backed on ACROSS FROM MIDNIGHT by an impressive set of studio stalwarts as well, including longtime piano man Chris Stainton and Uberdrummer Kenny Aronoff.
