Beautiful Collision
Bic Runga's sophomore release follows on from her debutalbum 'Drive' which won her critical acclaim in her home country of New Zealand. 'Beautiful Collision' sees Runga expand her ethereal melodic sound which has seen comparisons drawn with such artists as Travis, David Gray and Dido. With this album being written in New York (as opposed to her home with 'Drive') Runga has a bigger sound on this album, confessing to being influenced by the sounds and weather of America. Avec Laudenum
Austin dreamweavers Adam Wiltzie and Brian McBride debuted on Belgium's eclectic Sub Rosa label with a work of ambient perfection. Using only guitars, tapes, and effects, the duo spins infinitely recursive soundscapes that rival the eternal-drone fabrications of La Monte Young and Phil Niblock. Far removed from formless drift or wallpaper-like ephemerality, Stars of theLid's tonal inventions unfurl slowly but with an undeniable sense of design and purpose. Ghost instrumentation--phantom woodwinds, massed spectral string sections--pervades the spellbinding AVEC LAUDENUM. These illusory orchestral colors, which shade and tint the three-part "Atomium" suite's patient, Fripp-like string strokings, are so well defined as to seem completely tangible. But, like the receding horizon of "Dust Breeding (1.316)+," they are merely mirages--auditory illusions conjured invoked through musical sleight of hand. The closing "I Will Surround You" is even more extraordinary, a single perfect note folded into a gorgeous, wordless expression of love, longing, and desire. SKU: 1083813

Robson, Justin Timberlake, Brian Kierulf, Josh Schwartz, Max Martin. Engineers include: Max Martin, Rami, Jamie Duncan. BRITNEY was nominated forthe 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal Album. "Overprotected" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Well, the question is no longer whether she's a little girl or a woman--Britney Spears has obviously been the latter for some time. The question now is how long she'll be able to pretend at keeping us guessing, and how long we'll pretend not to know the answer. With BRITNEY she continues the dance of corrupted youth and innocence to the delight of both her female fans and dirty old and young men everywhere. While it's by no means the best song on the album, the ballad "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" typifies her commercial appeal (interestingly, though she writes several songs here, this one was written for her). The songs that ring truest here are those penned by Spears herself, such as the Chic-influenced "Anticipating" and the R&B flavored "Lonely," which play down the innocent girl/tart predicament in favor of presumably more realistic scenarios such as checking out her lipstick in the former and relationship dilemmas in the latter. Elsewhere she convincingly reduces Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'N' Roll" to its bubblegum essentials, while her interpretation of main squeeze Justin Timberlake's "What It's Like to Be Me" is arguably BRITNEY's finest moment. I Love You...me
Full title: I Love You... Me. Personnel includes: Cherokee, Brian McKnight (vocals); Simple E (rap vocals); Myron McKinley (spoken vocals, various instruments); Caroline Ducout Do'rcines (spoken vocals); Jeff Danna (Spanish guitar); Angelo Earl (guitar, bass); Bill Daulton, G-Mack, Michael McDonald (guitar); Ronald Blake (trumpet); Bill Myers (piano); Billy Preston (organ); Mike Elizondo (acoustic & electric basses); Reggie Hamilton (acoustic bass); Andrew Gooche, Scott Cannady (bass); Cedric Anderson, Harvey Mason (drums); Taku Hirano (percussion); Anthony Nance (drum programming); Patrick Shevelin (scratches); Erika Sulpacio, Tim Owens, Wendy A. Williams, Josina Elder, Shariotte Gibson (background vocals). Producers: Cherokee, Myron McKinley, Anthony Nance, Angelo Earl. Recorded at Can Am Recorders, Tarzana, California; Pacifique Studios and Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California; Westlake Studios, Los Angeles, California. Combining R&B, jazz, hip-hop, blues and folk into a smartly packaged debut, Cherokee shows the world her skills as a singer, songwriter, musician and producer. I LOVE YOU...ME is an interesting album that takes the listener on a dynamic musical journey. Throughout this 11-song debut, Cherokee offers songs that sound like they've been ripped from her soul for the sake of telling a story to the listener. You'll hear influences from '60s and '70s soul to modern hip-hop--check out the piano work of the legendary Billy Preston on "My Queen." A bold lyricist, Cherokee takes an unflinching look at the notion of her own death on "While I'm Flyin'." Other tunes deserving of a close listen are "Oopsy Daisy," "Misty" and thejazzy "Blue Bottle Afta Shave." SKU: 5065587

Stigmata
Original score composed by Billy Corgan and Mike Garson. The STIGMATA soundtrack is a collection of seven songs by contemporary pop stars and over 40 minutes of instrumental music written by pianist Mike Garson and Smashing Pumpkins frontman BillyCorgan. Though Corgan receives most of the writing credits on the album, STIGMATA's strongest tracks are those that the pair wrote together. The first seven tracks include contributions from Chumbawamba, Remy Zero, David Bowie, and others. The two standout tracks in the group are Bjork's "All is Full of Love," and Massive Attack's "Inertia Creeps." The former is a particularly dramatic soundscape. Carson and Corgan wrote the music and lyrics for Natalie Imbruglia's "Identify," a song whose loose, acoustic-guitar-driven melody line and anthemic chorus make it seem a bit anomalous among the less structured offerings. The "distrbnce (after sckhausen)"/"reflect (pause)"/"orah" triptych is the strongest stretch of instrumental music that Corgan and Garson put forth. The captivating STIGMATA is recommended headphone fare. SKU: 1025394

All Of Me [Remastered]
Personnel: Johnny Hartman (vocals); Frank Hunter (conductor); Tony Ortega (alto saxophone); Jerome Richardson (tenor saxophone, flute); Lucky Thompson (tenor saxophone); Danny Bank (baritone saxophone); Ernie Royal, Howard McGhee (trumpet); Frank Rehak (trombone); Hank Jones (piano); Milt Hinton (bass); Osie Johnson (drums); Bethlehem Orchestra. Recorded in New York, New York in November 1956. Includes liner notes by Joe Quinn and Joseph F. Laredo. Digitally remastered by Tom Moulton and Greg Vaughn (Frankford Wayne Mastering Labs, New York, New York). For most jazz fans, the name Johnny Hartman is eternally linked to that of John Coltrane. That's because few collaborations between singer and instrumentalist have evr had the impact of their legendary Impulse! session. In fact, Coltrane felt that Hartman's voice most closely resembled his sound on the tenor saxophone. Still, for this great Chicago-born baritone (1929-1983), there was life before and after Trane. In some ways, his career paralleled that of another great jazz baritone and heartthrob--Billy Eckstine. Hartman, too, served an apprenticeship with the Earl Hines Orchestra, and between 1947 and '49 was the featured vocalist with the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band, before going out on his own, recording dates for Savoy, RCA and Mercury. Fans of JOHN COLTRANE AND JOHNNY HARTMAN will be pleasantly surprised by ALL OF ME, on which Hartman demonstrates his rich sonority, supple beat and elegant flair for big band charts. The album makes a convincing case for Hartman as both pop crooner and jazz swinger. Listen to the way he elongates the word "eternity" and then mentholates the final phrases of "I'll Follow You." Strings and oboe toll away mysteriously during his rich, romantic reading of the bridge to "I Concentrate On You"--you can practically see the red wine and checkered tablecloth through the candlelight. And the relaxed grace of his rhythmic paraphrases on "I Get A Kick Out Of You," "All Of Me" and "Blue Skies" betray aBasie-esque sense of phrasing worthy of the great Joe Williams. SKU: 1048123

Suicide
Suicide: Martin Rev, Allen Vega. Seven years after the duo's inception, Suicide's debut album finally sneaked out in 1977 on the coat tails of the nascent New York punk scene. If its aim had been to confuse, startle, or repulse, SUICIDE succeeded in spades. By the same token, if a part-time sculptor and avant-garde jazz musician form a two-chord synthesizer duo and call it Suicide, commercial considerations are presumably low on their list of priorities. SUICIDE was a record destined to have future journalists reaching for words like "seminal". Synth duos start here. SUICIDE's bleak, one-act plays of violence and sexual deviance, and that lo-fi monotone punctuated by sleazy groans and horrifying screams, still induce nervous tension despite the passing years. To hear Alan Vega, an Elvis caricature out of time, crooning "Girl" is unsettling enough. When he acts out the desperation of "Frankie Teardrop" over the strictly controlled minimalism of Martin Rev's grinding keyboard and time-bomb rhythm, you're guaranteed a listening experience quite unlike any other. Chips From The Chocolate Fireball
The Dukes Of Stratosphear: Sir John Johns, The Red Curtain, E.I.E.I. Owen. The Dukes are really XTC - they use this name when recording 60's influenced psychedelic music, a bit of a tribute and a bit tongue in cheek. This CD includes the 25 O'CLOCK EP and the album PSONIC PSUNSPOT. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is XTC on a holidayof sorts. Recording under the name of The Dukes of Stratosphear, they released an EP (25 O'CLOCK) and an LP (PSONIC PSUNSPOT), herein collected onto one CD. With alter-ego names in place and cloaked in packaging from the ripe era of psychedelic overload, many people didn't even know this was indeed XTC (which was the intent and a sort of goal of theirs), rather a lost nugget from the '60s. Every detail is appropriate to the times they were invoking, from the instruments and arrangements to the often trippy non-sequiturs in the lyrics. There's everything from political intrigue ("The Mole From The Ministry") to hallucinogenic love songs ("My Love Explodes"). This is no mere dalliance, these guys knew what they were doing. CHIPS FROM THE CHOCOLATE FIREBALL is a labor of love honoring the records Andy Partridge and company watched endlessly spin during their teenage years. SKU: 1059777

Can I Have My Money Back (The Best Of Gerry Rafferty)
This reissue contains 12 bonus tracks from Gerry Rafferty's first group, The Humblebums. Personnel includes: Gerry Rafferty (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Joe Egan (vocals); Roger Brown (acoustic & electric guitars); Alan Parker (electric guitar); Rod King (steel guitar); John Van Dernick (fiddle); Tom Parker (piano, harpsichord, harmonium, organ, keyboards); Gary Taylor (bass); Henry Spinetti (drums, percussion); Andrew Steele (drums); Hugh Murphy (tambourine, background vocals); Rab Noakes (background vocals). Engineers include: Jerry Boys, Robin Black, Gerald Chervin. Originally released on Transatlantic Records. Includes liner notes by Alan Robinson. Alltracks have been digitally remastered. Rafferty seems to have spent his life writing about his tribulations with the music business and the problems it caused with his relationships. This was the first of many albums, including those with Stealers Wheel, to address this subject. That should not cloud the enjoyment because some of his gentlest moments are here, such as 'Didn't I' and the lovely 'Mary Skeffington'. 'Sign On The Dotted Line', written with Joe Egan, is the first of the 'business' songs. Nowadays, 'Baker Street' pays the mortgage, but in the innocent times of 1971 Rafferty needed every record sale he could get. Sadly this underexposed gem of a record let him down. SKU: 1034193

Lament Configuration, The
Fourth album by Nevada metalcore band formerly signed to porn king Matt Zane's Inzane Records label. Barricades And Brick Walls
Personnel includes: Kasey Chambers (vocals, acoustic guitar); Camile Te Naha, (vocals); James Gillard (acoustic guitar); Dave Steel, Mark Punch (guitar); Kym Warner (mandolin); David Henry (cello); Jeff McCormick (bass); BJ Barker (drums); Senseel Desilva (percussion); The Living End, Paul Kelly, Matthew Ryan, Buddy Miller, Lucinda Williams. Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. Building on the out-of-left-field success of her debut THE CAPTAIN, Kasey Chambers kicks any thought of a sophomore jinx square in the teeth with BARRICADES & BRICKWALLS, yet another fine batch of songs steeped in the sounds of American roots music. The trappings of newfound fame and fortune find the twenty-something Aussie examining it from the inside out (the heartfelt "This Mountain") as well as taking a wistful look back at an innocent childhood spent in the rural Australian outback ("Nullabor Song"). Complementing her introspective lyrics is a raspy twang that fallssomewhere between Lucinda Williams (who appears on the high lonesome outing "On A Bad Day") and Iris Dement. All the better for Chambers to yodel her way through the jaunty, Hank Williams-inspired "I'm A Little Bit Lonesome" (featuring Buddy Miller's harmonies) and deliver a spot-on cover of Gram Parsons' "Still Feeling Blue." Other highlights include the rambling, Fred Eaglesmith-influenced "Runaway Train," jaunty rock & roll of "Crossfire" (with Aussie rockers The Living End) plus ethereal duets with Paul Kelly ("I Still Pray") and Matthew Ryan ("A Million Tears"). Chambers' heartfelt passion especially resonates on the moving hidden track "Ignorance," a rant against societal ills. SKU: 1072244

Bat Out Of Hell Vol.2 (Back Into Hell)
BAT OUT OF HELL II is the long-awaited sequel to 1977's BAT OUT OF HELL and reunites Meat Loaf with the creative team of writer/producer Jim Steinman and producer Todd Rundgren. Personnel: Meat Loaf, Mrs. Loud (vocals); Jeff Bova (various instruments); Tim Pierce, Eddie Martinez, Pat Thrall (guitar); Brian Meagher, Sr., Brian Meagher, Jr., Justin Meagher (bagpipes, drums); Lenny Pickett (saxophone); Roy Bittan (piano, keyboard, synthesizer, programming); Bill Payne (piano); Steve Buslowe (bass); Kenny Aronoff, Jimmy Bralower, Rick Marotta (drums); Kasim Sulton, Rory Dodd, Amy Goff, Elaine Goff, Jim Steinman, Cynthia Geary, Brett Cullen, Michelle Little, Robert Coron, Max Haskett, Curtis King, Todd Rundgren, Ellen Foley, Eric Troyer, Gunnar & Matthew Nelson (background vocals). Recorded at Ocean Way Recording, Los Angeles, California and The Power Station, New York, New York. "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" [by Jim Steinman] was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Song Of The Year." "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo." What a great idea: put Eddie and Jim Steinman back togetheragain. Write some songs that sound like the 25-million-selling Bat Out Of Hell and call it . . . For once, whoever conceived this marketing plan was absolutely spot on. The time was right and the songs, while not up to the famous parent, were good. The lead single, "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)," featured an expensive video using a Beauty And The Beast theme. It helped to sell the album, but no other track on the album had quite the same power. They all sounded like Steinman/Meat Loaf songs. SKU: 1001057

Lives In The Balance
Personnel: Jackson Browne (vocals, acoustic guitar, vocoder); Gary Myrick, Steve Lukather, Rick Vito, Danny Kortchmar, Waddy Wachtel, David Lindley, Kevin Dukes (guitar); Jorge Strunz (nylon string guitar); Phil Kenzie (alto saxophone); Jai Winding (piano, organ, synthesizer); Ian McClagen (organ); Bernie Larsen (Clavinet); Bill Payne, Craig Doerge (synthesizer); Jennifer Condos, Bob Glaub, Jorge Calderon, Phil Chen (bass); Ian Wallace, Russ Kunkel, Stan Lynch, Jim Keltner (drums); Hugo Pedroza (charango, tiple); Quique Cruz (zampona); Doug Haywood, Bonnie Raitt, Deborah Dobkin, Mindy Sterling, Kevin McCormick (background vocals). Recorded at Sunset Sound Factory and The Outpost, Los Angeles, California. Browne, usually the most introspective of singer-songwriters, looksoutward on this album, more or less for the first time. Here, his lyrical evocations of the Reagan-era U.S.A. are less than flattering. The title song in particular uses a stinging indictment of our then-policy in Latin America as a metaphor for a larger spiritual void, and the dub reggae drenched "Till I Go Down," is a sort of one-man call to revolution. Songs in Browne's more familiar L.A. folk rock mode include the romantic "In the Shape of a Heart," and "Candy," a poignant dysfunctional family love song that boasts one of his best choruses.
