TEXAS SWING is an appropriate title for the hard-driving roots music melange that is singer, songwriter, violinist, and axe-slinger extraordinaire Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's oeuvre. This album is a superlative compilation of tracks from two of Brown's early '80s sessions, the Grammy-winning ALRIGHT AGAIN. and the Grammy-nominated ONE MORE MILE.
Brown is backed by a hair-raising big band throughout. The powerhouse rhythm section and wildly swinging horn section lend fat backing to originals such as the rolling "Ain't That Dandy" and the funk-inflected "Dollar Got the Blues," as well as well-honed covers such as T Bone Walker's "Strollin' With Bones." In addition to his blistering guitar leads and rough and ragged vocals (which always sound like an incitement to have a good time, no matter what he's singing), Brown blows a mean harmonica, and saws a dazzling fiddle (check out "Baby Take It Easy"). It's impossible to go wrong with this 17-song selection from this musical legend.

In listening to Tina Turner's 2005 two-disc retrospective, ALL THE BEST, the term "pop legend" almost seems like an understatement. A huge swath of Turner's underrated 1990s work is included here, with overlooked gems (the harmony-soaked "I Don't Wanna Fight," the breezy "Whatever You Need") presented alongside many timeless Turner standards ("Private Dancer," "What's Love Got to Do with It").
Of course, the powerhouse singer's knack for interpreting songs and picking duet partners is equally represented. Turner tears up Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" in a live setting, runs through a killer reading of Al Green's seminal"Let's Stay Together," and pours herself into Ann Peebles's classic "I Can't Stand the Rain." As for singing partners, Turner rocks out with Bryan Adams on the sizzling "It's Only Love," goes bilingual with Italy's Eros Ramazzotti on the soulful nugget "Cose Della Vita," and teams with British rapper Estelle on 2004's vibrant "Open Arms." Most intriguing is her pairing with David Bowie, which finds the duo in a Jamaican frame of mind for Iggy Pop's "Tonight." Throughout this 33-track collection, Turner is dynamic and energetic, reinforcing her remarkably stellar reputation.

Both individually and as a group, the members of the Dave Weckl Band went through many changes during the making of the aptly titled TRANSITION. The most obvious differences are the replacement of Weckl's longtime keyboard cohort Jay Oliver with the talented Steve Weingart, and the subtraction of guitarist Buzzy Feiten. Weckl, too, makes a few adjustments in his approach this time around, adding a plethora of percussion instruments to his already formidable drum kit arsenal.
Musically, the group gets along just fine. Weckl's famed high-powered drumming is in its usual stellar form as he pulls off jaw-dropping feats of agility and speed. Weingart is a welcome addition, providing tasteful keyboard work throughout, and ably filling the roleof the lone harmonic backdrop with some impressive solo spots. Weckl's boyhood buddy Tom Kennedy returns on bass, fitting seamlessly into the leader's contemporary rhythms. Finally, the veteran Brandon Fields reprises his role as the melody man, punching out funky lines and blowing memorable solos. Highlights include the popping opener "Wake Up," the frenetic "Mild Hysteria," and the nicely sparse ballad "Passion."

Named after the street that Pop lived on for many years, AVENUE B overflows with the kind of introspection that one might expect to come after five decades of hard living. Songs such as "Miss Argentina," "Long Distance," and "Motorcycles" all address the fleeting nature of love. Elsewhere, "Corruption" finds Pop spewing acid over how life's dark side has seeped into his soul. Pop picks up the pace on a swirling cover of "Shakin'All Over" and "Ya Yo Habla Espanol," a track that sounds like Iggy fronting Santana. AVENUE B plays more like the soundtrack to the mosh pit of the mind than anything that might be tossed on for the pit at CBGBs.

There are lyrics on Nine Inch Nails' 1989 debut album which you wouldn't want your children to recite and Trent Reznor, good looks notwithstanding, is hardly the sort you'd invite round to meet your parents. On this Reznor's despair, self-loathing and anxiety are animated by a fearful barrage of bone-crunching industrial noise. Parts of "Something I Can Never Have," for example, could teach Motorhead a thing or two about the power riff. It's not all jet-propelled hate and fury, however, with variedproducers (Flood, Adrian Sherwood, Keith LeBlanc) all bringing something new to the table. And if Reznor's nihilism clouds proceedings, his vitriol nevertheless produces some spectacular moments - "Head Like A Hole," "Sin" and "Ring Finger" being prime examples.

After spending most of the '90s charting an independent course, Pearl Jam makes LIVE ON TWO LEGS its live debut after recording five studio albums. Recorded during a 1998tour, TWO LEGS is an excellent representation of PJ's mid-'90s material. The urgent "Corduroy" opens this record and from here, the band is firing on all cylinders. Eddie Vedder shreds his voice on the primal "Do The Evolution" but sounds almost bored as he introduces "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" before giving it as heartfelt reading as he did on the previous song "Daughter."
Former Soundgarden drummer and longtime friend-of-the-band Matt Cameron fills in behind the excellent interplay of guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard, particularly on "Even Flow," a song that still sounds fresh despite being the oldest one in the set. NO CODE's "Off He Goes" has an easy-going tempo and guitar phrasing reflecting the prior year spent recording and touring behind Neil Young. Young is given further props with a slightly turgid reading of his "F*ckin' Up." LIVE ON TWO LEGS doesn't break any new ground, but does reverberate with a passion for music that burns deep within the soul of Pearl Jam.

As far as debuts go, Drowning Pool displays hard-won skill; well crafted songs that touch on recurring themes of free thought and warn of blind faith in organized religion. VocalistDave Williams clearly comes from the Phil Anselmo (of Pantera) school, balancing throat-ripping ferocity with clean vocals, ruddering the dynamics of Drowning Pool in a dominant fashion. As far back as 1978, Elvis was paying homage to Bacharach, with a live version of "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" on the STIFFS LIVE album. When the two collaborated on "God Give Me Strength" (included here) for the film Grace of My Heart, they hit it off so well that they decided to write an entire album together, PAINTED FROM MEMORY being the glorious result. Bacharach and Costello are a natural fit; Costello has long been a proponent of extended melodic structures, irregular meter and sophisticated harmonies, on all of which Burt wrote the book. After Hal David, Bacharach never had another lyricist who could live up to his melodies-until now.
Bacharach's melodies and orchestrations here all hark back to his salad days of Dionne Warwick and Dusty Springfield. On "Toledo," he even employs that classic double-flugelhorn sound that is the trademark of his '60s work. The string arrangements are characteristically tart and catchy as hell. Reigned in by the pure pop of Bacharach's tunes, Costello abandons wordplay and extended metaphor, contributing the most straightforward lyrics of his career. Vocally, Elvis is in crooner mode, pushing his upper range and vibrato for all they're worth, investing every tune with palpable emotion.

McCARTNEY II, like it's titular predecessor a decade earlier, is all Paul. He handles all the instruments and vocals here, and even produced and engineered the album himself. That's pretty much where the comparison ends, though. While many of the cuts do have a light-hearted feel a la McCARTNEY, this is a much more song-oriented album, and is an unjustly overlooked entry in the McCartney catalogue.
The hit "Coming Up" is McCartney at his most infectious and ebullient. "Temporary Secretary" is a humorous, very British-sounding tune that bears more than a little resemblance to the work of McCartney's former band (no, not Wings). McCartney gets to showoff some bluesy guitar chops on the soulful "On The Way." Most importantly for as ballad-oriented as artist as McCartney, this album contains two of his most poignant '80s tunes, "Waterfalls" and "One of These Days."

This is the debut album by the singing Sprague Brothers--Frank plays guitar, and Chris the drums. This music is traceable straight back to Buddy Holly--influenced by the Merseybeat sound that he influenced--as well as to the Everly Brothers. Both Sprague brothers write; the songs are clearly part of a tradition, yet avoid falling into nostalgia. "Hardship" has the spare rocking and close harmony of the Everly's work, but is so exuberant that the song looks forward more than it looks back. Likewise, "She's Gonna Leave" evokes the earliest recordings of the Beatles but its verve is timeless. Guests on hand include Deke Dickerson, Randy Fuller (from the Bobby Fuller Four) and guitarist Eddie Angel (from Los Straitjackets).

This 1953-1956 compilation represents Chet Baker's early days recording in Los Angeles. The appellation "cool" has been ascribed to Baker because of his often understated, contemplative approach to jazz, but on THE BEST OF CHET BAKER PLAYS we hear a trumpeter who defies anysuch categorization.
Just as Miles Davis' BIRTH OF THE COOL is canted more towards bebop than the atmospheric, textural and reflective attributes so often associated with cool jazz, ...CHET BAKER PLAYS is more about tightly arranged, uptempo burning than midtempo cool. Of course, Baker's introspective ballad playing is also featured on tracks such as "Moonlight Becomes You" and "Darn that Dream." Overall, however, what makes Baker's conception so unique in his early years, is the light, yet crisp, feel he and his band mates employ. Whether playing bebop or cool, his approach is consistent and, most of all, innovative. In short, THE BEST OF CHET BAKER PLAYS shows Baker's adaptability as well as his versatility.

This one-disc compilation of 20 songs includes many classics: "I've Got You Under My Skin," "You Make Me Feel So Young," "The Lady Is a Tramp," In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning," and "One For My Baby (And One More For the Road)." The packaging is attractive (with some great photos of Sinatra) and the digital re-mastering was done right.
Also included are updated versions of songs Sinatra sang in his earlier years ("Oh! Look At Me Now," and "Night and Day"). While this CD is not all-inclusive--some of the more melancholy songs of these years are omitted--it's a collection that can be listened to again and again.

NATURAL BORN BOOGIE is a re-sequenced version of Humble Pie'sfirst two albums, SAFE AS YESTERDAY IS and TOWN AND COUNTRY, neither of which got much exposure in America. Success would come later, with the live album PERFORMANCE--ROCKIN' THE FILLMORE, in 1971.
The two albums were showcases for co-founders Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton, both refugees from teeny-bop bands whose relief at finally being able to play their own way initially masked the fact that their styles--Marriott the rowdy blues rocker, Frampton more introspective, with a penchant for acoustic instruments--were rather less compatible than they realized. As a result, the first album is heavy on Marriott's heavy guitar army approach, whereas the second, as its title suggests, has more of a Frampton-influenced pastoral quality.

Though tenor sax legend Gordon was living in Europe in the '60s (where jazz players were treated as artists rather than "entertainers," and where racism was less an issue), he would come back home to the USA to play and record. That's where TOWER comes in, where a producer with brains paired Gordon with the equally legendary tenor saxophonist James Moody on the album's easy-going yet spirited opener "Montmartre." No dueling saxes--just a sheer,for-the-fun-of-it blowing session on a Gordon original.
As a matter of fact, almost all of TOWER's tunes are Gordon originals--none of the usual standards. The exception is Mary Hopkin's '60s pop hit "Those Were the Days," to which Gordon gives a regal treatment, adding to the song's melancholy tone a thoughtful, pensive groove. The band are all masters of their instruments: piano legend Barry Harris, bassist Buster Williams (not well known when this album was originally released) and drummer Al "Tootie" Heath (brother of Percy and Jimmy). Down to earth, solid and swinging.

This is where Costello began to display the chameleonic tendencies that would serve him so well throughout his career. Abandoning snappy,"new wave"-associated rock for the first time, Elvis decided to visit Nashville and record his take on the country classics he loved so much. Enlisting the services of George Jones producer Billy Sherrill, Costello cloaked himself and the Attractions in countrypolitan trappings (including lush strings) for some distinctive version of country evergreens like "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down" and "Sweet Dreams." Only the punk-derived fervor of "Why Don't You Love Me Like You Used To Do" and the bar-room raunch of "Honey Hush" interrupt the elegant, emotional balladry. Costello also pays tribute to a more recent generation on aching covers of Gram Parsons' "I'm Your Toy" and "How Much I Lied." Ryko's bonus cuts sweeten the pot considerably, especially the live version of Leon Payne's self-explanatory "Psycho."
