Under A Blood Red Sky (Live)
U2: The Edge (vocals, guitar, piano); Bono (vocals); Adam Clayton (bass); Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums). Recorded live in Denver, Boston and West Germany on the 1983 "War" tour. By the time of this 1983 live EP, U2 had emerged as the socio-politically conscious, self-determined saviors of rock & roll, theirpassion, musical power and sheer youthful exuberance making them rock idols to countless young (and some not-so-young) fans. This live document shows the ability of the band (particulary the zealous, proselytic Bono) to fire up a crowd with their earnest, anthemic approach. Early U2 classics like "Gloria," "I Will Follow" and the rabble-rousing terrorism protest "Sunday Bloody Sunday" are neighbored with fun obscurities like "Party GIrl" (complete with endearingly awkward guitar solo) and the moody "The Electric Co." As a final gesture of solidarity with his audience/congregation, rock & roll preacher Bono engages them in a spiritually tinged singalong on "40." SKU: 1003290

Sleepless In Seattle
Producers: Jimmy Hilliard (tracks 1, 11); Tommy LiPuna; Frank Filipetti and Marty Paich; Denny Cordell; Marc Shaiman and Harry Connick, Jr.; Billy Sherrill; David Foster. Compilation producers: Marc Shaiman, Nicholas Meyers. Includes liner notes by Nora Ephron. Nowadays, when a director makes a film, the priority seems to lie as much in the managing of the movie's genesis as it is in creating a perfect soundtrack. While the script, the actors and the production values can establish a film's mood and direction, a well-sculpted soundtrack can seal that feeling, adding the final piece to a successful puzzle. When successful, soundtracks can even add an extra dimension to the finished project. The soundtrack to SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE is such a triumph, working precisely beacuse of the sustained, timeless romanticism of its collection of standards. This romantic film required an ageless repetoire. Thus, the songs that were chosen all bear a distinct lyrical and melodicfocus. The love story on the screen also demanded sentimentalism, so the producers went straight to the source--the movies--and brought back some of Hollywood's most endearing chestnuts. Great writers like Harry Ruby, Oscar Hammerstein, Hoagy Carmichael and Jule Styne are represented with an eclectic assortment of unique interpretations by the likes of Jimmy Durante, Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole. These standard-bearers are joined by current artists like Rickie Lee Jones, Joe Cocker and Celine Dion, who put their own stamp on some well-chosen classics--particularly Cocker, whose throaty take on "Blackbird" is a modern blues gem. These are all dinner and candlelight songs; tunes that either set a romantic mood, or are meant to transport the listener to another time. And with such well-crafted ballads as "When I Fall In Love," "As Time Goes By" and "Stardust," the soundtrack to SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE will either engender the listener's appreciation for the great songwriting talents of yesteryear, or send them looking for the phone number of that long-forgotten, special someone. Antidote, The
Fifth album from London trip-hop survivors who practically inventedthe now inescapable "chillout" genre with their 1998 release 'Big Calm'. Having lost singer Skye Edwards, whose mellifluous tones defined their sound, they have been forced to reinvent themselves. Recruiting a new vocalist in the shape of classically trained Daisy Martey (ex-Noonday Underground), and avant-garde sound artist Rob Mullender, they have recorded everything live to get a raw, immediate and psychedelic sound. Black Album, The (Acappella) [PA]
Personnel include: Jay-Z; Kayne West, Danee Doty, Vincent "Hum V" Bostic, Cedric The Entertainer. Producers: Just Blaze; Timbaland; Eminem; Rick Rubin. Prolific hip-hop superstar Jay-Z certainly knows how to capture attention and stay in the spotlight. From his brash declarations of being Notorious B.I.G.'s heir to repeatedly stoking the fire of a dangerous feud with Nas, the Brooklynite is certainly a master of stirring up controversy. However, while his unpredictable nature helps to keep eyes pointed in his direction, it's his lyrics that have earned him fame, along with the respect of many critics, fans, and fellow rappers. After the release of THE BLACK ALBUM--his powerful, supposedly final testament--Jay-Z returned to headlines without even trying. The record inspired a cult following in the world of underground remixers, who proceeded to "mash up" the album (sans license) by combining Jay-Z's vocals with music from pop and rock albums. In reaction to this phenomenon, Jay-Zcomes back with his over-the-counter THE BLACK ALBUM (ACAPPELLA), which presents the whole disc, minus the instrumentation. Taken alone, the cuts are intense on their own account, but the true treat for fans is the ability to play DJ with the album for their own enjoyment. SKU: 6556362

Best Of Jethro Tull Vol.2, The (Repeat)
Jethro Tull: Ian Anderson (vocals, flute, guitar, mandolin, alto & soprano saxophone); Martin Barre (guitar); John Evan (piano, Hammond organ, synthesizer, piano accordion); Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond, Glenn Cornick (bass); John Glascock(bass, background vocals); Clive Bunker, Barriemore Barlow (drums, percussion). Engineers: Robin Black, John Burns, Andy Johns. Recorded at Morgan Studios and Island Studios, London; The Maison Rouge Mobile Studio. After the success of M.U., a best-of collection that appeared in 1976, it was apparent that the public was more than willing to buy collections of previously released Jethro Tull songs. Since the band's studio records often consisted of sprawling epics like THICK AS A BRICK and A PASSION PLAY, the greatest-hits collections were considerably more accessible, offering abridged versions of their mini-epics without some of the more challenging (and lengthy) musical excursions. Thus, REPEAT includes the central chunk of the eight-minute "Minstrel in the Gallery," and single-length excerpts of "A Passion Play" and "Thick As a Brick." The set revisits some of the best of Tull's early records such as two fine songs from 1969's STAND UP which showcase the band's incredibly wide and idiosyncratic range. These are "Bouree," a lilting flute-driven romp based on a Bach theme and "A New Day Yesterday," an electric blues rave-up featuring Tull at its heaviest. One of the less obvious choices here is the dark title track from 1974's WAR CHILD. And rounding out the set is the very worthy "Glory Row," a previously unreleased bonus track. SKU: 1078198

Greendale
Includes a bonus DVD entitled LIVE AT VICAR STREET, which features a solo acoustic concert recording of the GREENDALE album. Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, harmonica, organ); Billy Talbot (vocals, bass); Ralph Molina (vocals, drums). The Mountainettes: Pegi Young, Nancy Hall, Twink Brewer, Sue Hall. Includes liner notes by Neil Young. Critics were sharply divided over this album, some hailing it as a masterpiece and some dismissing it as a tossed-off trifle. Longtime Young fans will notice right away that GREENDALE's raw, minimalistic sound and quirky songs hearken back to such gloriously off-kilter 1970s releases as ZUMA and TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. This is a "concept album," but it's one of the few instances in rock history where those words needn't send audiences fleeing in the opposite direction. Young's rare combination of deceptively effortless, organic narrative and unpredictable strangenesskeep things flowing, and there are valuable moments of humor sprinkled throughout to keep GREENDALE from getting weighed down. Crazy Horse guitarist Poncho Sampedro is absent, leaving Young backed only by the primal thump of Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina, but a number of the tunes stretch out to 10 minutes or more, forcing you to confront the transcendentally ragged simplicity and eloquence of Young's guitar and musical vision. Ultimately, the effect is not unlike that of latter-day Bob Dylan or Lou Reed--a veteran rock poet fully immersed in his idiom pushes its boundaries to meet his idiosyncratic needs, simultaneously confounding expectations and leaving deep footprints in the landscape of modern musical art. Send
Of all the bands to emerge from the late-1970s UK punk-rock explosion, Wire not only remained active nearly 30 years later, but the quartet also managed to retain its unique, vehement edge. Wire set itself apart from the angry young men of '77 by bringing an intellectual sensibility (and subtle, wry humor) to the loud, fast punk/indie ethos, with each album displaying marked musical progression. Released in 2003, SEND finds the group merging the stripped-down adrenaline rush of 1977's PINK FLAGwith the sleek electronic sounds of 1987's THE IDEAL COPY. The galvanizing "In the Art of Stopping" features a hypnotic swatch of melody amid hook-driven, manically grinding guitars, with the defining aspects of Wire's style--sardonic vocals, oblique yet witty lyrics, startling immediacy--still intact. The pounding, trance-like thunder of "Mr. Marx's Table" and "Nice Streets Above" even finds the ensemble absorbing techno and grindcore into its approach. While some long-lived bands are content to evoke or rework past glories, Wire proves that its only consistent trait is its uncompromising unpredictability. SKU: 1079588

Question Of Balance, A
Also available on cassette with TO OUR CHILDREN'S CHILDREN'S CHILDREN. NOTES: The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward, Mike Pinder, John Lodge, Ray Thomas, Graeme Edge. Includes liner notes by John Reed and an interview with The Moody Blues. Digitally remastered by Steven Fallone (PolyGram Studios). A beautifully remastered version of the Moodies' 1970 back-to-basics album (translation: they cut way back on the overdubs) with the original aural murk stripped away at last, and informative liner-note interviews with the band about the recording process. Standout tracks include the classic sort-of protest song"Question" and "It's Up to You," one of singer/guitarist Justin Hayward's most authoritatively wistful riff-rockers. The prettiest track is Ray Thomas's "And the Tide Rushes In," a psychedelic ballad of the sort that moved the Who's Pete Townshend to remark that the Moody Blues' albums were so gorgeously produced that listening to them was like "being in church." Greatest Hits
Personnel: Ice Cube, George Clinton, M.C. Ren, Dr. Dre, Mack 10, Ms. Toi, Das EFX, Westside Connection, Mr. Short Khop (rap vocals). Producers include: Ice Cube, D.J. Pooh, The Bomb Squad, Budda, Dutch. Recorded between 1990 & 2001. Ice Cube's ferocious frown is familiar now from multiple big and small screen appearances, but as this collection reminds us, he's still first and foremost the thinking street thug's rapper, one of the original gangstas. GREATEST HITS isn't sequenced chronologically, jumping frantically from 1998's "Pushing Weight" to 1994's "Check Yo Self" with its "Message" backing track, to 1990's furious Public Enemy-influenced "Jackin' For Beats" (Ice Cube's departure from P.E.'s rivals N.W.A. presaged his hooking up with the Bomb Squad, Public Enemy's production team). But though the patchwork song list makes a clear overview of Cube's career difficult, it also makes for some thrilling twists and turns, for instance between the rowdy, early-'90s "The Nigga Ya Love to Hate" to the equally tumultuous but more sophisticated "Late Night Hour,"recorded in 2001. What's obvious from even the most cursory overview of this set is Ice Cube's huge contribution to rap and hip-hop music, and over a decade's worth of unswerving dedication to putting his message across. Demolition
Personnel: Ryan Adams (vocals, electric guitar, guitar, harmonica, piano, synthesizer, bass, programming); Brad Rice (electric guitar); Bucky Baxter (guitar, pedal steel guitar, background vocals); John Paul Keith (guitar); Chris Stills (12 string acoustic guitar, background vocals); Greg Leisz (steel guitar, dobro); Bucky Baxter (pedal steel guitar); Michael Nord Andersson (dobro); Ethan Johns (ukelele, bass, drums); Svante Henryson (cello); Chris Stills (Hammond B-3 organ); Billy Mercer, Sheldon Gomberg (bass); BradPemberton (drums); Michael Blair (djembe); Juliana Raye (background vocals). Producers indlude: Ryan Adams, Frank Callari, Luke Lewis, Michael Blair, Ethan Johns. Recorded at Woodland and Javelina Studios, Nashville, Tennessee; Cello Studios, Hollywood, California and Nord Studio AB, Stockholm, Sweden between December 2000 and October 2001. As part of the prolific flow of material that found him releasing three albums in two years, ex-Whiskeytown frontman Ryan Adams continued to surf his wave of popularity with 2002's DEMOLITION, a baker's dozen worth of demos. Culled from five separate demo recording sessions, these songs find Adams all over the stylistic map indulging in some twangy, pedal-steel-soaked tendencies ("Hallelujah"), making like Paul Westerberg with a Byrds Jones ("Gimme A Sign"), and tucking into echoey ballads ("Dear Chicago"). Adams also delicately duets with fellow y'alternative stalwart Gillian Welch ("Tomorrow"), mixes it up with Dylan's pedal steel player Bucky Baxter ("Chin Up, Cheer Up"), and still manages to get the girls to swoon on solo-acoustic odes laced with plenty of yearning and a forlorn harmonica solo ("Desire"). Until Adams finds time to bang out another double album in-between touring, rubbing elbows with Elton John, and curing cancer, DEMOLITION makes a fine stopgap for both diehard and casual fans. Autumn Stone, The [Remastered]
Personnel: Steve Marriott (vocals, guitar); Ronnie Lane (guitar); Kenney Jones (drums); Ian McLagan (bass). The Small Faces' albums have been repackaged many times, and in greater number than their few original titles should allow. THE AUTUMNSTONE, however, is a bracing collection of odds and ends, hits, and live tracks that was released in 1969, following the departure of founder and frontman Steve Marriott. The title track alone is worth the price of admission, of a piece with the Small Faces' previous album, OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE. A few pieces are clearly unfinished ("Collibosher" is little more than an instrumental backing track), but even these show Marriott and Lane's songwriting prowess reaching new peaks. The five live numbers on THE AUTUMN STONE prove what England knew but America didn't discover until the band reemerged as The Faces--the Small Faces were a blistering performance outfit. They are a '60s band worth not only remembering but also celebrating. SKU: 1083097

Resolver
Personnel:Louise Post (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); Brian Liesegang (guitar, keyboards, bass, percussion, programming, background vocals); Kevin Tihista (guitar, bass, background vocals); Stephen Fitzpatrick, Scott Pazera (guitar); Eric Remschneider (cello); Suzanne Sokol (bass, background vocals); Jimmy Madla, Matt Walker (drums, percussion); Kelli Scott (drums); Scott Steiner, Chad Adams (programming). Engineers: Chad Adams, Brian Liesegang, Joe Barresi. Recorded in 1998 & 1999. Veruca Salt has successfully weathered its personnel crises and returns as strong and defiant as ever. Sole remaining founding member Louise Post has started afresh with a new label and a new band to orchestrate her musical vision; the result is RESOLVER. "The Same Person" opens gently with a mantra segueing into "Born Entertainer," featuring Post's trademark double-octave vocals and a clever Cheap Trick pun. Upbeat vocal harmonies contrast severely with the abrasive lyrics of "Best You Can Get," while the melancholy power-ballad "All Dressed Up" tells the tale of a woman trying to reinvent herself to please her lover, and finding the cause an empty and unrewarding one. "Used To Know Her" could pass for a lament over the departure of co-founder Nina Gordon. "Yeah Man" contrasts quiet verses with big, vocal harmony-heavy choruses, and "Disconnected" features Louise sounding desperately emotional, with lines such as "it's kind of scary when you're lover leaves you for a lucky star." While RESOLVER focuses on varying degrees of romantic discontent, Louise Post appears quite comfortable at the helm of a revitalized Veruca Salt. SKU: 1065683

Henry's Dream
Nick Cave& The Bad Seeds: Nick Cave (vocals, harmonica, keyboards); Mick Harvey (guitar, keyboards, vibraphone, drums); Blixa Bargeld (guitar); Conway Savage, Martin P. Casey (piano); Thomas Wydler (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Conway Savage (vocals); Dennis Karmazyn (cello); Bruce Dukov, Barbara Porter (violin). Engineers: Chuck Johnson, Cohen, Dave Cook. HENRY'S DREAM is perhaps the most fully realized of all Cave's albums. On it, he achieves the perfect balance between his lush, poetic sensibilities and his feral, unfettered rock & roll id. Most of the guitar work is acoustic, but there's no lack of momentum as the band drives harder than ever. Cave's grisly Cohenesque lyric talents are at their peak here. Each song is like a short horror story, or a rock equivalent of Rod Serling's NIGHT GALLERY. The unrelentingly gruesome imagery of tunes like "Papa Won't Leave You Henry" is hammered home even further by the pounding arrangements. Even when things settle down, as on the folkie ballad "Loom of the Land," there's a barely veiled undercurrent of danger in the air. HENRY'S DREAM is full of some of Cave's finest songcraft, making a case for him as the gloomy bard of '90s alt-rock. SKU: 1001819

Great Destroyer, The
Low: Alan Sparhawk, Mimi Parker, Zak Sally. Additional personnel: Dave Fridmann (keyboards); Gerry Beckley (background vocals). Low's seventh full-length album, THE GREAT DESTROYER, marks a literal departure for the Duluth, Minnesota trio, with the band leaving its longtime label, Kranky, in favor of uber-indie taste-makers, Sub Pop. The overall sound of the record reflects the transition, as Low hits new heights in both volume and aggression, particularly on the fuzzed-out "Monkey" and the swelling "Everybody's Song." During "On the Edge Of" and "When I Go Deaf," guitarist Alan Sparhawk unleashes gloriously distorted Neil Young-worthy leads, while "Broadway (So Many People)" balances amped-up rock with thegroup's trademark hushed melodies. Those looking for Low's renowned hypnotic "slowcore" sound will find it carefully mixed into different forms, with only "Silver Rider" clearly recalling the band's formative mid-1990s era. Like past Low releases, THE GREAT DESTROYER still uses Sparhawk's gorgeous vocal harmonies with drummer Mimi Parker as its centerpiece, but this is the only true constant here, making for a refreshingly dynamic album. For listeners who might have written Low off as a one-note band, this is the record that proves them wrong. SKU: 6582428

American Idiot (Parental Advisory) [PA]
The Berkley punk rock trio's follow up to 2000's 'Warning' album. Whereas 'Warning' was the band trying out a more acoustic led introverted approach, 'American Idiot' is a return to the Green Day sound of the early '90s - fast, vitriolic punk rock. The album also includes a deviation from form in the shape of the 9 minute long, five part 'JesusOf Surburbia'. SKU: 6572022

Cassette available on MCA (1592). Also available with CAN'T BUY A THRILL on 1 cassette. NOTES: Steely Dan: Walter Becker (vocals, harmonica, bass); DonaldFagen (vocals, acoustic & electric piano, synthesizer); Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (guitar, pedal steel guitar); Denny Dias (guitar); Jim Hodder (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Ben Benay (acoustic guitar); Rick Derringer (slide guitar); Lanny Morgan, Bill Perkins, Ernie Watts, John Rotella (saxophone); Victor Feldman (vibraphone, marimba, percussion); Ray Brown (acoustic bass); Sherlie Matthews, Myrna Matthews, Patricia Hall, David Palmer, Royce Jones, James Rolleston, Michael Fenelly (background vocals). Producer: Gary Katz. Reissue producers: Walter Becker, Donald Fagen. Principally recorded at Village Recorder, Santa Monica, California. Includes liner notes by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Digitally remastered by Walter Becker, Donald Fagen, Roger Nichols. Steely Dan were on a roll by the time this, their second album, was released. Already, they were the most critically favoured band of the 70s, and their star has never once dimmed. Prolific they were not, and quality not quantity was the order of the day. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter added some tough meat to their smooth vegetables. This is never better demonstated than on "My Old School." This track has a series of almost-false guitar endings that the listener begs not to finish, even though he/she was probably smoking funny cigarettes at the time. Similarly gorgeous are "The Boston Rag" and "King Of The World." SKU: 1002987
