Decade
3 LPs on 2 CDs, recorded between 1966 and 1976. Personnel includes: Neil Young (vocals, guitar); Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash, Crazy Horse. Compilation producers: Neil Young, Tim Mulligan, David Briggs. Covering the years between 1966-1976, DECADE is a solid overview that shows off the many sides of the always iconoclastic Neil Young. Starting with Young's work in Buffalo Springfield, some of the nuggets include the psychedelic calliope that is "Down To The Wire" and the fuzz guitar/Motown-inspired "Mr. Soul." Throughout these ten years of recordings, Young constantly dug deep, touching on controversial topics be it his CSN&Y masterpiece about the student massacre at Kent State ("Ohio"), compositions dealing with the ups and downs of the drug culture ("Needle And The Damage Done," "Tonight's The Night") or history's dark chapters of racial injustice ("Cortez The Killer," "Southern Man"). Neil Young's choice of accompanists also allowed him to explore many different avenues. Crazy Horse provided the sonic wallopthat bore such fruit as "Like A Hurricane," whereas The Stray Gators provided the springboard for more countrycentric numbers like "Heart Of Gold" and "Harvest." Other welcome inclusions are "Star Of Bethlehem" and "Deep Forbidden Lake," from HOMEGROWN, the unreleased sequel to HARVEST. The solid material on this compilation and accompanying liner notes by Neil Young make this an essential part of any record collection. SKU: 4125172

My Conception [Remastered]
Personnel: Sonny Clark (piano); Hank Mobley, Clifford Jordan (tenor saxophone); Donald Byrd (trumpet); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Paul Chambers (bass); Pete La Roca, Art Blakey (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on December 8,1957 and March 29, 1959. Originally released on Blue Note (3056, 70093). Includes liner notes by Michael Cuscuna and Ben Sidran. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster. This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series. Pianist Sonny Clark enjoyed a rich recording career in the golden age of Blue Note. MY CONCEPTION is a combination of a 1959 session that included regulars Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey with a bonus session recorded two years earlier that featured guitarist Kenny Burrell. Clark's amazing dexterity is featured throughout as he trades hot licks with Mobley, Byrd, and Blakey in the first half and blues runs with Burrell and saxophonist Clifford Jordan in the second. As to be expected with this cast of legends, the performances from either session are pristine and swinging. The obvious contrasts between the two different ensembles allow for a comparison of Clark's subtle adaptations to his environs while maintaining his signature nimble style. This is especially evident on the tune shared by both sessions, "Minor Meeting." In the 1957 recording with Burrell and Jordan it is a relaxed swinger. In 1959, under the powerful hands of Blakey, et al, it became a fiery bopper. Taken as a whole, this is a valuable double-shot that offers more rewards than most. SKU: 1075470

Thug Misses [PA]
Khia brings it to the boys on this statementof intent, featuring the, um, assertive "My Neck, My Back (Lick It)," an explicit journey around her nether regions (whatever happened to the old-fashioned subtleties of "I Wanna Hot Dog For My Roll?"). And in case anyone was in any doubt about her credentials and status in the sometimes chaotic world of R&B, there's "F**k Dem Other Hoes," where she shows she can sling it with the best of her male contemporaries (whatever happened to "sisterhood is powerful"?). "The K-Wang" is, almost incidentally, a great dance track, but it's obvious that Khia's main objective on THUG MISSES is to bring it to the guys and beat them at their own game, a mission she accomplishes admirably. Silent Tongues
Solo performer: Cecil Taylor (piano). Recorded at the Montreal Jazz Festival, Montreal, Canada on July 2, 1974. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit technology. This is an astonishing piano concert. Cecil Taylor is at the height of his considerable pianistic and conceptual powers here, at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1974, and the audience is with him the whole way. It's a remarkable, historic recording. Taylor, by this time, had completely invented his own universal musical language. The first three compositions ("Abyss," "Petals & Filaments," and "Jitney") are flawless, gathering in intensity as Taylor, the psychic geologist, mines gold wherever he goes. The speed and density of his notes raise the listener's metabolic activity; it's like being on drugs. At times, listening to those flurries of clusters and diads are as terrifying as finding a bird trapped in a house. And there's a freakish element here as well --we are witnesses to a Promethean event: Cecil/Superman shaking chords from his fingers like a dog shaking water off of his back. After one climax, the audience cheers like they're at a rock concert. This hour-long performance is also notable for what it lacks: there are no conventional melodies, harmonies or grooves to speak of; no silences for more than one second; not much use of the pedal; no idiomatic piano patterns. And there is no sentimentality. Taylor sounds like he's trying to doaway with artifice altogether. SKU: 5051963

Berlin Cabaret Songs (German Version)
Personnel: Ute Lemper (vocals); Robert Ziegler (arranger, conductor); Jeff Cohen (piano); Matrix Ensemble. Recorded at CTS Studio 2, Wembley, London, England on January & February 1996. Includes liner notes by Peter Jelavich. The different photos on the English and German-language versions of Ute Lemper'sBERLIN CABARET SONGS are indicative of how differently these 18 songs come across in the two languages. The photo on the English album is sexy and vampy, while the photo on the German album is sexy and chilly. These songs were performed in the German cabarets of the '20s and early '30s, and while English speakers won't catch the explicit political subtext of these songs, like the defiantly gay "The Lavender Song" and "When the Special Girlfriend" (originally a duet by Marlene Dietrich and Margo Lion--Lemper sings both parts) and the female empowerment of "I Am a Vamp!," Lemper sings them with such passion, sly humor, and total commitment--complete with utterly authentic musical arrangements--that it becomes disturbingly clear why Hitler banned cabaret along with other art forms not in keeping with his totalitarianism. Let's Take It To The Stage
Funkadelic: Gary Shider (vocals, guitar); Bernie Worrell (vocals, keyboards); William "Bootsy" Collins, Cordell Mosson (vocals, bass); Calvin Simon (vocals, congas); George Clinton, Fuzzy Haskins, Grady Thomas (vocals); Michael Hampton, Eddie Hazel (guitar); Bill Nelson (bass); Tiki Fulwood (percussion); Ron Bykowski. Additional personnelincludes: Paul Warren, Reggie McBride, Frosty, Mello Garcia, Honeys, Denise Hurd, Gary "Mudbone" Cooper, Telma Hopkins, Joyce Vincent. Recorded at Hollywood Studios, Hollywood, California & United Sound, Detroit, Michigan. Despite it's misleading title, Funkadelic's LET'S TAKE IT TO THE STAGE is not a live album. This 1975 studio release is what many Funkadelic aficionados consider the band's last true rock-funk album, before Clinton and Co. concentrated entirely on more dance-based and radio-friendly material. It is also the first Parliament-Funkadelic release to prominently feature the talents of the groups' recently acquired bassist, the outrageous Bootsy Collins, whom many regard as the very embodiment of funk. LET'S TAKE IT TO THE STAGE also finds Parliament-Funkadelic on the verge of shedding its long-lived cult status and finally reaching wide spread commercial success. The title track, in which shots are taken at other popular '70s funk figures (such as Sly and even the Godfather of Soul, James Brown), gloriously displays the band's sense of humor. So do the sexually suggestive "No Head No Backstage Pass" and the album's party-anthem highlight, "Get Off Your Ass And Jam." Other top funk workouts include "Stuffs & Things," "Better By The Pound," "Good To Your Earhole," the more serene "Be My Beach," and the album-closing, largely instrumental "Atmosphere." LET'S TAKE IT TO THE STAGE continues Funkadelic's winning '70s streak. SKU: 5079010

Clear
Personnel: Carlton, River, Spikey Tee, Justin Warfield, Sinead O'Connor, Benjamin Zephaniah, Leslie Winer, Bernard Fowler, Bim Sherman (vocals); Skip McDonald (guitar, background vocals); Kenji Jammer (guitar); Dave Clayton (keyboards, samples, effects); Ivor Guest (keyboards, samples, programming); Adam Holden (bass, samples, programming); Doug Wimbish (bass, effects); Claudia Sarne (bass); Keith LeBlanc (drums, samples, programming); Danny Cummings, Jeff Scantlebury, Inder Goldfinger Matharu (percussion); Atticus Ross, Tim Simenon (samples, programming); Sista Joy (background vocals). Producers: Tim Simenon, Doug Wimbish, Keith LeBlanc. Recordedat Eastcote Studios, London, England. Tim Simenon's third record, CLEAR, is a stylistic hodgepodge that covers a lot of ground in a relatively short (49 minutes) span of time. Greatly altered from the U.K. version of the record, the U.S. one--which excises one track, "5ml Barrel," and provides alternate versions of three other tracks, including the amazing "Bug Powder Dust"--is a more stately affair that goes places that others in the trip-hop field rarely, if ever, venture. Incidentally, the U.K. version is different enough to warrant seeking out. Starting from a fairly laid-back vibe, Simenon infuses everything--from the reggae "Dark Heart," the near-ambient "One to One Religion," and the almost '70s adult contemporary of "Sandcastles"--with occasionally wiggly house beats, snatches of jazz, and a handful of genuinely odd sound effects. The standout track is "Bug Powder Dust," the second of Justin Warfield's guest raps (the first is "Brain Dead"). The track is a tripped-out (way out!), bass-driven collision between street rap and ambient with Warfield taking ideas from William Burroughs' NAKED LUNCH (note the album's similarity to the poster of the film version of that novel) and dropping more pop culture references than you can shake a stick at. Sign O' The Times (Original Soundtrack)
Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Lisa Coleman (vocals, sitar, wooden flute, keyboards); Sheila E. (vocals, percussion); Susannah, Jill Jones, Sheena Eastson, Camille (vocals); Wendy Melvoin (guitar, percussion, background vocals); Mico Weaver (guitar); Eric Leeds (saxophone); Atlanta Bliss (trumpet); Greg Brooks, Wally Safford, Jerome Benton, Gilbert D., Coke J., Todd H., Susan R., Mike S., Brad M., The Penguin (background vocals). Engineers: Susan Rogers, Coke Johnson, Prince. Principally recorded at Paisley Park, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Sunset Sound, Los Angeles, California. After an adventurous run through fields of Beatlesque psychedelia, Prince seemed ready to get back to the task of creating the epic that both his audience and adoring critics had been demanding since PURPLE RAIN. Originally put together as a three-LP opus titled CRYSTAL BALL (but pared down pre-release by the picky artist), SIGN O' THE TIMES wasn't exactly the historic merger of rock and R&B that the world had been expecting. Instead, it played like an ultimate mix-tape of Prince-ly styles--from grinding, house music-inspired funk ("Housequake") to idiosyncratic pieces of irresistibly sweet pop fare ("Starfish And Coffee"). Yet, the man's singular outlook could constantly be identified; and as varied as the music got, that outlook worked as a uniting factor. Abandoning the Revolution and returning to the one-man-band ethic made the overall sound of SIGN O' THE TIMES far more spare than recent efforts. Various members did make random contributions, and the entire group is featured on a lone live track (the driving extenda-groove, "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night"); but Prince seemed adamant about unshackling himself from the responsibilities of being a particular band's leader, and constructed an album that reflected his evolving musical vision, rather than the Revolution's signature sound. Though that sound still rears its head--particularly on "Play In The Sunshine"--on SIGN O' THE TIMES, it's only part of the picture. The other parts are as discombobulated as Prince the one-man-band had always been. Social relevance as a funky turn ("Sign O' The Times"), spiritual strength as heavy metal gospel ("The Cross"), and sex in every form and position possible were all moves Prince had already done, or at least hinted at.But never before had he delivered these moves with such maturity, or as such a complete package, which is why SIGN O' THE TIMES is undoubtedly among the apexes of Prince's career. Kill 'em All
Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Cliff Burton (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums). Originally released on Megaforce. Occasionally one album can be pinpointed as the turning point in a musical genre. KILL 'EM ALL is onesuch album and, boy, did the heavy metal genre need a transfusion of new blood. Herein trad metal was stripped of its late-70s pomposity and reduced to its base element of brutal sonic force. The rhythm section of Burton and Ulrich do a masterful job, as does rhythm guitar ace and vocalist James Hetfield, on a set that owes a debt to punk as much as to Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. The phantasmagorical allusions are still there in the lyrics, as are some long-winded guitar solos, but otherwise KILL 'EM ALL promised a creative rebirth for hard rock. SKU: 1004920

17.11.70
Personnel includes: Elton John (vocals, piano); Dee Murray (bass); Nigel Olsson (drums). Recorded live at A&R Recording Studios, New York, New York on November 17, 1970 for a live radio broadcast on WABC-FM, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by John Tobler. Digitally remastered by Tony Cousins (Metropolis Mastering, London, England). Recorded live on WABC-FM, 11-17-70 would become the fourth of John's records to simultaneously land in the Top 10, making him the first act to do so since The Beatles.Drawing mostly from his self-titled second album, John's set included a sweeping "Sixty Years On," a gospel-soaked reading of "Take Me To The Pilot" and a funked-up "Honky Tonk Women." Dee Murray and Nigel Olson's background vocals and solid rhythmic support on songs such as "Bad Side Of The Moon" and "Can I Put You On" made this a particularly potent trio that would set the stage for such groups as Ben Folds Five 25 years later. The centerpiece of this show was a roof-raising, 20-minute version of "Burn Down The Mission" that found John throwing in covers of Arthur Crudup's "My Baby Left Me" and The Beatles' "Get Back."
