Moodring
Personnel includes: Mya (vocals); Common (rap vocals); Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis (various instruments); Bobby Ross Avila (guitar, Wurlitzer piano, strings); Derek Scott (guitar); Jerry Hey, Gary Grant (horns); DJ Harper, Earl Fleming (keyboards); Alex Al (acoustic & electric basses); Eddie Cole (bass); Steve Ferrone (drums); Luis Conte (percussion); Missy Elliott, Katrina C. Willis (background vocals). Producers include: Ron Fair, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis. Young R&B siren Mya's voice first caught national attention with her song-stealing chorus on Pras's everpresent 1998 hit "Ghetto Superstar" from the movie "Bulworth." After that, it seemed the youthful singer with the dulcet, yet surprisingly acrobatic voice seemed to be everywhere; providing the hookfor the theme to "The Rugrats Movie," teaming with Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, and Pink on "Lady Marmalade," and releasing her own records, as well as making a memorable acting turn in the blockbuster CHICAGO. Mya's third record MOODRING reveals her cinematic connection to be no coincidence, as it's full of drama, from the theatrical vocal phrasing to the lush production. Despite a gentle countenance, Mya's no fading flower, asserting her intellectual and sexual prowess throughout the album, from the first track "My Love Is Like...Wo." Mya's brazen attitude is perfectly tempered by an engaging pop-R&B approach straight from the playbook of the Jacksons' vintage '80s work, the best balance coming on breezy tracks like "Sophisticated Lady" and "Late." All Is Dream
Mercury Rev: Jonathan (vocals, acoustic guitar); Grasshopper (guitar); Jeff (piano, drums); Dave (Mellotron, bass). Additional personnel includes: Mary Gavazzi Fridmann (vocals); Tony Visconti (string arranger); Jason Russo (guitar); Rex L. White (pedal steel guitar); Larry Packer (violin); Suzanne Thorpe (flute); Marc Guy (French horn); Justin Russo (Fender Rhodes piano); Joel Eckhaus (bowed saw). Producers: Dave Fridmann, Grasshopper, Jonathan, Jeff Mercel, Max Lichtenstein. Engineers include: Dave Fridmann, Grasshopper,Johnathan. Mercury Rev dismantles the classic definition of a rock band. Members of this collective music project have retained separate, independent lives, convening periodically to record majestic sound collages--truly brilliant pieces of art-rock that pilfer as much from Pink Floyd's progressive psychedelia as they do from Phil Spector's grand, intricate production techniques. ALL IS DREAM is vintage Mercury Rev. The proper sequel to 1998's DESERTER'S SONGS comes off as another epic soundtrack to a movie never made--a collection of musical scenes scraped from the subconscious that is best heard continuously from start to finish. The sonic flow is so seamless that no one song stands out, yet each is unique. "Nite and Fog" combines meandering keyboards with a soft, gorgeous backdrop of string accompaniment, while "Tides of the Moon" is driven by a thick, walking bass line and ghostly musical saw. Impressively, the album maintains a cohesive quality despite the vast instrumental diversity displayed from track to track. Held together by waves of orchestral outbursts and vocalist Jonathan Donahue's strangely comforting, child-like vocal style, ALL IS DREAM is a symphonic-psychedelic meditation of the highest order. Cabo Verde
Personnel includes: Cesaria Evora (vocals); Armando Tito (guitar, background vocals); Luis Ramos (guitar); Bau (10- & 12-string guitars, violin, cavaquinho); Osvaldo Dias "Vaiss" (12-string guitar, whistle, background vocals); Jacinto Pereira (cavaquinho); Vincent Segal (cello); Gerard Mendes (whistle); Pierre Gosseze (clarinet, flute); Luis Morais (clarinet); Jacques Bolognesi (accordion); Camille Soprane (soprano saxophone); James Carter (tenorsaxophone); Paulino Vieira (piano, 6- & 12-string guitars, bass, cavaquinho, background vocals); Nando Andrade, Chico Serra (piano); Ze Paris (acoustic bass); Fabrice Thompson (percussion). Principally recorded at Studios Davout, Studios Harry Son & Studios Gimmick, Paris, France. Includes liner notes by Anastasia Tsioulcas. CABO VERDE was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. Sure, Cesaria Evora has been the music press' world-music poster girl since her self-titled 1995 American debut, but this time, you've got to believe the hype. Evora is the undisputed queen of morna, the "Cape Verdean blues," and on CABO VERDE she continues to display her mastery of the musical tradition she grew up with. Though the album is littered with themes of loss, longing and regret, the arrangements create a lilting, uplifting contrast to the sadness and desperation of the lyrics, which are sung in Portuguese. There's not much percussion to speak of, but the syncopated acoustic guitar rhythms and lively violin riffs keep the mood upbeat even in the most disconsolate songs. Throughout, Evora's rich, warm vocals are full of emotion, but always tastefully understated. SKU: 5046218

So Jealous
Sophomore album from acoustic folkster-turned-radio rocker twin sisters follows up 2002's 'If It Was You'. Building on the Morissette-esque sound of that album, this time around they have added a trendy new wave sheen to their big hooks andradio-friendly choruses, bringing the style closer to the brash, super-slick mall-punk of Ashlee Simpson and Lindsey Lohan. Full Circle
Boyz II Men: Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman, Michael McCary. Additional personnel includes: Faith Evans. Producers include: Babyface, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis. There are certain verities in life that one can count on; the chilly winds of winter, the sizzling sun of summer, and the soothing sounds of Boyz II Men. These guys pretty much wrote the book on smooth, harmony-based soul in the post-Philly International era. For better or worse, they created the template a thousand boy bands, both black and white, would follow to overstuffed bank accounts. FULL CIRCLE finds the Boyz (who by 2002 were fully fledged men) playing to their strengths. There are no attempts here to play catch-up with any of the R&B stars that came on the scene since the Boyz first made their big splash. Though Faith Evans and Rob Jackson make guest appearances, and there is the occasional dollop of hip-hop flavor added to the arrangements, the overall approach here is quite rightly one of slow, romantic balladsfull of elegant, melodic hooks and lushly harmonized vocals. Those who've been following Boyz II Men from the start won't be put off by what they find here, and those just arriving to the party will doubtless be intrigued as well; perhaps that's what they mean by FULL CIRCLE. Cowboy Junkies: Margo Timmins (vocals); Michael Timmins (guitar); Alan Anton (bass); Peter Timmins (drums). Additional personnel: Jeff Bird (mandolin, electric mandolin, harmonica, 8-string bass, percussion); Linford Detweiler (piano, Wurlitzer piano, organ); Karin Bergquist (background vocals). Recorded at Chemical Sound and Beaconsfield Studios, Toronto, Canada from December 1999 to December 2000. You've got to hand it to the Cowboy Junkies for hanging in there as long as they have. For a band who arguably reached their commercial peak in 1988 with the seminal TRINITY SESSIONS, they've shown an impressive degree of fortitude, continually refining their sound, album after album. Showing the empathy for sonic Americana that made fellow Canadians like the Band into roots-rock heroes, the Junkies built their reputation on dreamy, soft-focus folk-rock with country overtones. Fifteen years after they began, OPEN finds the group in a place similar to where they started from, but just different enough to justify the long, hard road they've traveled. Gentle slices of deftly observed rootsiness are still the order of the day, but the fog lifts often enough to let some mid-tempo tunes with moderately biting guitar and forceful feel disrupt the languor. Most importantly, singer Margo Timmins still comes off like a cross between Sandy Denny and a less-Teutonic Nico; striking just the rightbalance between distance and emotion seems to be a consistent factor in the Cowboy Junkies sound. Can Delay 1968
Can: Malcolm Mooney (vocals); Michael Karoli (guitar); Irmin Schmidt (keyboards); Holger Czukay (bass); Jaki Leibzeit (drums). Recorded at Schloss Norvenich, Germany in 1968 & 1969. A ragged-but-right Can recorded the material found on DELAY before and after completing 1968's official debut, MONSTER MOVIE. Literally delayed, this important document of the band's beginnings was edited from archival tapes by bassist and co-founder Holger Czukay and didn't see release until 1981. It's a surprisingly strong collection that's redolent of the group's influences (Stooges, Hendrix, Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, perhaps the 13th Floor Elevators) and sheds light on Can's formative years. "Butterfly" kicks off DELAY in an immediately recognizable mode. Czukay, superb drummer Jaki Liebezeit, and guitarist Michael Karoli lock into a mesmerizing, maze-like groove while expatriate American artist Malcolm Mooney extemporizes a parched mantra about how "dying butterfly began to fly," and keyboardist Irmin Schmidt fills the spaces with dissonant, seesawing electronics. If possible, "Little Star of Bethlehem," a spoken/sung saunter through feedback-streaked Band of Gypsies territory, and the fragment "Pnoom" are even more art-damaged. Schmidt's synthesizers lend an appealingly woozy psychedelic glaze to "Thief," an ambitious number couched in Karoli's spindly, melodic phrasing. "Man Named Joe" is warped rockabilly with a falsetto scat and wheezy, harmonica-like synth. The irresistible "Nineteen Century Man" and "Uphill" mine an arty funk-punk groovebetween James Brown and Iggy Pop. SKU: 4133376

Disc One 1991-2001 (All Their Greatest Hits)
Barenaked Ladies: Ed Robertson (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Kevin Hearn (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards); Jim Creeggan (vocals, bass); Tyler Stewart (vocals, drums); Steven Page (vocals). Producers include: Jim Scott, Michael Phillip-Wojewoda, Don Was, Ben Mink, Susan Rogers. Includes liner notes by Howie Klein, Larry Le Blanc, and Steve Page. In the decade since Barenaked Ladies entered CFNY's "Modern Music Search" contest and waked away the recipients of the $100,000 grand prize (which financed their debut GORDON), have quietly gone from cult phenoms to international pop stars. Led by the double-barreled threat of singer-songwriters Steven Page and Ed Robertson, BNL have amassed an impressive canon of music packed with clever lyrics, an embarrassment of hooks and super-tight arrangements. DISC ONE: ALL THEIR GREATESTHITS serves as a treat for die-hards and casual fans alike with its mix of the familiar ("Pinch Me"), rare (an acoustic version of Bruce Cockburn's "Lovers In A Dangerous Time") and the newly recorded (the new wavey "It's Only Me (The Wizard of Magicland)"). Amid all this manna are true gems like the jaunty acoustic jangle of "Be My Yoko Ono", stream-of-conscious catchiness that defines "One Week" and live-favorite-turned-Lotto-theme song "If I Had $10000000. Elsewhere, Two of the Ladies' most poignant cuts - "Brian Wilson" and "What A Good Boy" - are represented with stellar in-concert versions. Fans of breezy, exuberant pop are also directed to the brassy "Enid" and runaway brilliance of the infectious "Falling For The First Time". SKU: 1068552

Elephant
Pele: Chris Rosenau, Matt Tennessen, Jon Mueller, Jon Minor. With enoughchops to burn and enough good sense not to, Pele is helping redefine the concept of the instrumental rock trio. This is gorgeous, mesmerizing post-rock. Tall chords (i.e., chords with a whole lotta notes) collide with gentle melodies and angular rhythms to create what is easily one of the best instrumental discs of the late '90s. Think of a more rockin', spastic Pat Metheny Group, circa 1976. And just like that group, Pele has the potential to spawn legions of imitators. SKU: 1041623

Harder They Come, The [Remastered]
The 2003 Deluxe Edition of THE HARDER THEY COME includes a bonus CD of early reggae tracks recorded between 1968 & 1972, rare photos and original artwork. Producers: Jimmy Cliff, Derrick Harriot, Leslie Kong, Byron Lee. Originally released on Mango SMSAS (7400). Includes liner notes by David Katz. The soundtrack to the groundbreaking film about Jamaican subcultures, this superb selection is also a synthesis of late 60s and early 70s reggae. Recordings by Jimmy Cliff, the movie's star, form the album's core and his contributions, notably 'Many Rivers To Cross', show his understated power to greateffect. An important figure in the development of reggae, Cliff at last secured deserved acclaim with this collection. His work is ably supported by 'Pressure Drop', one of the finest songs the Maytals ever recorded, while the Melodians and Slickers prove equally strong. The latter's 'Johnny Too Bad' perfectly encapsulates the film's plot, one that helped launch reggae into the international arena. SKU: 1065140

Someday My Prince Will Come
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Hank Mobley, John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Wynton Kelly (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Jimmy Cobb, Philly Joe Jones (drums). Recorded at 30th Street Studio, New York, New York on March 7, 20 & 21, 1961. Originally released on Columbia (8456). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler and Eddie Henderson. Digitally remastered by Teo Macero (CBS Records Studio, New York). This is part of the Columbia Jazz Masterpieces series. Recorded shortly after the blistering IN PERSON, FRIDAY/SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE BLACKHAWK, SAN FRANCISCO, VOLUMES 1 & 2 (but released first), SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME captures Miles Davis and his second great rhythm section at the peak of their collective interplay. By March 1961, the rhythm team of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb had attained a finger snapping level of relaxation and swing that was equal parts grits and grace (check out their soulful blues vamp on "Pfrancing"). They had become so attuned to each other during their tenure with Miles that they left in tandem to form the Wynton Kelly Trio--forcing Miles to search for new conscripts, precipitating his boldest period of exploration. Miles' had a penchant for turning offbeatstandards and show tunes into personal jazz classics, and certainly few songs have come to be as closely identified with an artist as "Someday My Prince Will Come." From the rhythm section's evocation of a clock striking midnight and Kelly's big band-styled comping, through Miles' famous muted rendition of the theme and the contrasting tenor styles of laid-back Hank Mobley and a testifying John Coltrane, this is a defining moment in the history of jazz and the pop song form. The title tune tends to overshadow the understated power of Miles' muted horn on such exceptional ballad performances as "Old Folks," "I Thought About You" and the trumpeter's own "Drad-Dog." But it's "Teo," an extra funky, Spanish flavored vamp (shades of "It Ain't Necessarily So") that elicits the most heat from each improviser, particularly Mr. Coltrane, only months away from his own epic Iberian "Ole." Opel
OPEL contains outtakes and previously-unreleased material from the sessions for the LPs THE MADCAP LAUGHS and BARRETT. Personnel includes: Syd Barrett (vocals, guitar); Mike Ratledge (organ), Hugh Hopper (bass); Robert Wyatt (drums). Producers: David Gilmor, Roger Waters, Peter Jenner, Malcolm Jones. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England between 1968 and 1970. Includes liner notes by Brian Hogg. Syd Barrett is primarily known amongst fans less as a musician and more of a doomed poet along the lines of Skip Spence or Brian Wilson--someone who talkedthe talk AND walked the walk. Unfortunately, what's usually lost amid the drug-casualty hoopla is exactly how talented the man was as a singer/songwriter. OPEL is a collection of alternate and rare material that Syd recorded without help from the other members of Pink Floyd (though band members did contribute to his other two official releases). Robert Wyatt and most of Soft Machine back Syd on some of OPEL's tracks, and while this lineup might lack the sympathetic touch of the Gilmour-directed material, OPEL is nonetheless a gem. Of particular interest are the spacier versions of "Octopus" (Here titled (Clowns and Jugglers") and "Wouldn't You Miss Me" (dubbed "Dark Globe" on this collection). A must for Barrett fans and the curious alike. SKU: 5064284

Big Hits Vol.1 (High Tide And Green Grass) [SACD] [Remastered]
Full title: Big Hits (High Tide And Green Grass). This is a Hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both Super Audio and regular CD players. The Rolling Stones: Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Mick Jagger (vocals); Brian Jones (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Recorded in London, England, Chicago, Illinois & Hollywood, California between 1963 & 1966. Like its 1969 second volume THROUGH THE PAST DARKLY, BIG HITS (HIGH TIDE & GREEN GRASS) is a fine collection of '60s Stones classics, but it's a rather bluesier one. This is exemplified by such rootsy tracks as the redefined Buddy Holly tune "Not Fade Away" and the R&B bounce of Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now." Not that the group's original songs were lacking in grit or attitude; the vituperative "Get Off My Cloud," delivered in Mick Jagger's best Sidcup dialect still sounds magnificent, as does Brian Jones's booming Vox pearl guitar on "The Last Time" and Keith Richards's opening chords to the aforementioned "Not Fade Away." This is a disc to behanded down to your children. SKU: 1076737

Burn The Incline
Vandermark 5: Ken Vandermark (tenor saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet); Dave Rempis (alto & tenor saxophones); Jeb Bishop (trombone, guitar); Kent Kessler (bass); Tim Mulvenna (drums). Recorded at Airwave Studios, Chicago, Illinois on December 9 & 10, 1999. The Vandermark 5 is a Chicago quintet led by saxophonist/composer/MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant winner Ken Vandermark, who might be termed a member of the post-Anthony Braxton generation of young jazz players. Vandermark's style encompasses the furthest reaches of jazz's avant-garde aswell as the swinging straight-ahead tradition, while absorbing edgy rock, contemporary classical, and funk influences. BURN THE INCLINE features a whirlwind of styles, yet comes across as uncompromisingly focused. "Late Night Wait Around" is a sparse, mysterious, noir-like tapestry featuring some tart, blues-tinged sax solos rich with the sounds of masters such as Sonny Criss and Frank Morgan. "Roulette" has a loping, semi-funk groove and tightly arranged, darting ensemble passages that recall Gil Evans, Carla Bley, and even Frank Zappa. "Accident Happening" and "Ground" feature stormy "outside" playing (think Roscoe Mitchell, John Zorn) yet are possessed with unsentimental passion and urgency. INCLINE is highly recommended for adventurous jazz (and rock) fans who crave audacious sounds that don't sacrifice accessibility. SKU: 1043582

Odds And Sods
Cassette available on MCA Special Products (1659). NOTES: ODDS AND SODS is a collection of outtakes and rarities from the 1960s through the early '70s, including "I'm The Face," recorded by The Who when they called themselves The High Numbers. The Who: Roger Daltrey (vocals); Pete Townshend (guitar, synthesizer, piano, vocals); John Entwistle (bass, brass, vocals); Keith Moon (drums, vocals). Additional personnel: Leslie West (guitar), Al Kooper (organ). Producers include: Kit Lambert, The Who, Chris Parmeinter, Peter Meaden. Reissue producer: Jon Astley. Originally released on MCA (2126) in October 1974. Includes liner notes by Pete Townshend and Chris Charlesworth. All tracks have been digitally remastered. ODDS AND SODS stands out a bit in the Who canon. The aptly titled 1974 collection features songs that, for one reason or another, didn't end up on their initial recordings. It's a mixed bag to be sure, one that includes pre-Who numbers like "I'm the Face," introspective and religious-themed pop ("Too Much of Anything," "Faith in Something Bigger"), and some inspired goofiness like the anti-smoking "Little Billy." Unlike a lot of out-takes collections, there are no clinkers here, and there are several gems. "Pure and Easy" from the aborted "Lighthouse" project, ranks with any of the great melodies Pete Townshend has written. The slowly building "Naked Eye," passionately sung in alternating verses by Daltrey and Townshend, ebbs and flows to an explosive climax. The most familiar tune here is probably "Long Live Rock", whose canny lyrics look back at the band's early days and boast, "We were the first band to vomit in the bar/and find the distance to the stage too far." A quirky collection that grows more appealing as time goes by. SKU: 1001277

Unforgettable Fire, The
U2: The Edge (vocals, guitar, piano); Bono (vocals); Adam Clayton (bass); Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums). Recorded at Slade Castle Co., Meath, Ireland and Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland. The title of this album was taken from an exhibition of paintings by survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It confirmed U2 as one ofa handful of bands able to tackle such vast and emotive subjects with dignity and musical integrity. There are few artists capable of writing about religion, war, race, the Irish problem and life with such ferocity and global commercial success. 'Pride (In The Name Of Love)', a hymn to Martin Luther King, was a worldwide hit, and almost every track is an anthem sung by millions. The production by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois was a taste of things to come. SKU: 1004874

Bubblegum
Personnel: Chris Goss (guitar); Wendy Rae Fowler (piano); David Catching (organ); Molly McGuire (bass guitar); Tracy Chisholm (tapes); Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin, Mark Lanegan, Aldo Struyf. Producers: Mark Lanegan; Chris Goss; Alain Johannes. In between the release of FIELD SONGS and its follow-up, BUBBLEGUM, former Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan sang for hard-rock heroes both old (a reunited MC5) and new (Queens of the Stone Age), gaining both fans and famous friends in the process. Thus, all eyes were on Lanegan for BUBBLEGUM, which features guest shots by everyone from PJ Harvey and Queens leader Josh Homme to Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses. Fortunately, all this attention doesn't seem to have fazed the sandpaper-voiced singer; despite the guest list, BUBBLEGUM is as dirty, gritty, and raw as anything in his catalog. While much of Lanegan's previous solo work is a mix of languid folk-rock, gutter blues, and the kind of grunge-mutated 1960s-psych influences that powered the Screaming Trees, BUBBLEGUM is lean, angular, and occasionally almost avant-garde. Simple, driving, Stooges-like riffs and rhythms abet minimalistic organ lines |
