Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm
Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming); Peter Gabriel, Billy Idol, Tom Petty, Iron Eyes Cody, Don Henley, Willie Nelson (vocals); Michael Landau (guitar, background vocals); Steve Stevens (guitar); Wayne Shorter (saxophone); Larry Klein (keyboards, bass, congas, programming, background vocals); Steven Lindsey (organ); Thomas Dolby (marimba); Manu Katche (drums, percussion, background vocals); Benjamin Orr, Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, Julie Last (background vocals). Mitchell's '80s work is often written off as too slickly produced, but that's too easy a generalization. There's a level of sophistication at work on this albumthat transcends any qualms about studio gloss. Ever the explorer, Mitchell never stopped exploring new sonic vistas, and here she ups the ante, utilizing '80s studio technology to create an ambient edge that suits her impressionistic lyrical and harmonic sensibilities. Sure, co-producer Larry Klein leans toward the smoother side of things when it comes to keyboard and backing vocal sounds, but that doesn't distort the painterly beauty of Mitchell's compositions. Synth pioneer Thomas Dolby is on hand to provide some inventive soundscapes, and the presence of Don Henley is countered by the vocal appearance of Tom Petty and Billy Idol on "Dancin' Clown." Complete Recordings, The (All 41 Recordings)
THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS includes a 48-page booklet with biographical notes, rare photos and a complete discography. Solo performer: Robert Johnson (vocals, guitar). Producer: Don Law. Compilation producers: Stephen LaVere, Frank Driggs. Recorded in San Antonio, Texas on November 23 & 26-27, 1936 and Dallas, Texas on June 19-20, 1937. Includes liner notes by Stephen LaVere, Keith Richards andEric Clapton. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Noted blues historian Robert Palmer has called him "the Mississippi Delta's first modern blues-man," and over the past 50 years Robert Johnson's influence has reached out from beyond the grave. Though his recording output numbers fewer than 30 different songs, Johnson's catalog has been a treasure trove picked clean by artists ranging from Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin and the Grateful Dead. The beauty of THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS lies in its utter simplicity. Johnson's reedy vocals, accompanied only by a steel-string guitar, evoke the very essence of the Deep South with its mystery and intrigue. It's easy to see where the myth of Johnson going down to the crossroads to make a Faustian pact with Lucifer was first sown; it can be heard within the confines of "Cross Road Blues" and "Hellhound On My Trail." While the sound of Johnson's recordings has a discernible hiss to it, the unadulterated emotion resonating in his voice goes straight to the marrow, making these sonic limitations seem like an afterthought. Burning The Hard City
Djam Karet: Gayle Ellett (guitar, keyboards, percussion, tapes); Mike Henderson (electric 6 & 12-string guitars, keyboards); Chuck Oken (keyboards, drums, programming); Henry J. Osborne (keyboards, bass, percussion). Recordedbetween July 1990 & April 1991. One super-duper barnstormer from the States' finest exponent of post-Pink Floyd space prog. This is a supremely gutsy noise. The guitars are scorched, the rhythms pungent, and the electronics bruising yet burnished with imaginative vigor. All four members of Djam Karet double on multiple instruments, but their individual accomplishments manage to form a stunningly cohesive whole. Gayle Ellett and Mike Henderson weave a tapestry of gnashing chords and delicate acoustics, intertwining these amidst Chuck Oken's authoritative drumming and Henry Osbourne's smelt-iron bass work. This stuff cooks. It's a veritable feast for your sound system--and an air-guitarist's dream. "Province 19: The Visage of War" is a roaring Viking battle that sees guitars careening about the parched landscape of an emasculated stereo field, burning their way through speaker fabric like a blowtorch through butter. "Feast of Ashes" commences with some spiky synth effects and jazzified percussion before the six-strings kick in to upset your middle-ear canals. Lest the unwary think is a bad case of death metal rearing its ugly head, think again. This is sophisticated, composed, truly progressive rock music from a band that means serious business. 30 By Ella [Remastered]
This 1999 reissue contains one bonus track. Personnel: Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Benny Carter (arranger, alto saxophone); Georgie Auld (tenor saxophone); Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet); Jimmy Jones (piano); John Collins (guitar); Bob West (bass); Panama Francis, Louis Bellson (drums). Producer: Dave Dexter. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California on May 28 & 29 and June 3, 1968. Includes liner notes by Dave Dexter. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Ron McMaster. Though 30 BY ELLA features, as advertised, 30 songs, the tracks are arranged in six lengthy medleys made up of five songs each. Listening to the CD, the conceit pays off beautifully. Ella Fitzgerald and her partner, alto saxophonist Benny Carter, put together these medleys with surprising wit and musical sophistication, two things vitally important for this kind of project, as any cabaret singer knows. The songs may seem oddly juxtaposed at first, but when you hear how beautifully the tearjerker "Try a Little Tenderness" segues into Duke Ellington's sly "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)," you'll wonder how Fitzgerald and Carter pull this off so effortlessly. Technically, this CD is 31 by Ella--a rendition of the popular novelty "Hawaiian WarChant" is a bonus track. SKU: 1018089

Standard Time Vol.3 (The Resolution Of Romance)
Personnel: Wynton Marsalis (vocals, trumpet); Ellis Marsalis (piano); Reginald Veal (bass); Herlin Riley (drums). Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch. Something a bit different for Marsalis brother Wynton: an all-standards and ballads album. This record is a tribute of sorts to the songs that jazzmen throughout history have interpreted with reverence and the twist of personal expression. The program consists of many classic Broadway and Tin Pan Alley tunes--many of which were part of the "songbooks" of Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday. The way Marsalis caresses the melody of "Where or When" (also covered by rockers Dave Edmunds and Dion and the Belmonts) would meet with Sinatra's approvaland make Clark Terry or Miles Davis envious. Marsalis also contributes originals, written in the "standard" style. "The Seductress," for example, could be an obscure, beautiful Duke Ellington ballad from the 1930s. This is a near-perfect jazz album, in which Marsalis tips his hat to the giants that have come before--both classic ballad players (Terry, Clifford Brown) and songwriters (Rodgers and Hart, Hoagy Carmichael). And it's a wonderful album to relax with, at that. SKU: 5068439

Live May 11 1968
H.P. Lovecraft: Tony Cavallari, Dave Michaels, Jerry McGeorge, Michael Tegza, George Edwards. Includes liner notes by Jeff Jarema. Digitally remastered by Bob Irwin. Utilisingan eclectic mix of folk, rock, and psychedelia, Chicago's H.P. Lovecraft came together in early 1967 under the creative guidance of George Edwards (vocals) and David Michaels (vocals/keyboards). One undistinguished single and a critically acclaimed debut album later, the band gravitated towards the "happening" San Francisco scene in the spring of 1968 and found fame (if not fortune) supporting the Bay Area rock luminaries of the day at Winterland and the Fillmore West. These live Fillmore tracks, however, prove that Lovecraft were more than just a bunch of hippie also-rans. Drawn mainly from that debut album, the material featured here includes both group compositions and works by revered singer-songwriters Fred Neil and Randy Newman. "I've Been Wrong Before" is a concise reading of a truly superior Newman song. "The White Ship," an eerie adaptation of a short story by H.P. Lovecraft (the author), and the extended traditional "Wayfaring Stranger" give the band a chance to stretch out a little. The solid dual lead vocals are outstanding throughout. A fascinating live document not released at the time, the album serves to cement H.P. Lovecraft's position at the top of the Frisco second division. SKU: 1032565

Charlie Parker At Storyville
Personnel: Charlie Parker (saxophone); Herb Pomeroy (trumpet); Red Garland, Sir Charles Thompson (piano); Billy Griggs, Jimmy Woode (bass); Roy Haynes, Kenny Clarke (drums). Recorded at Storyville, Boston, Massachusetts on September 22, 1953. Includes liner notes by Bob Porter and an interview with Charlie Parker by John McLellan. Recorded at two 1953 Boston club dates, AT STORYVILLE is an album of loose, energetic and mightily swinging music. The first half of the record, which features the great pianist Red Garland in his only recorded date with Parker, is slightly peppier than the later session. Garland is still developing his style here, and his playing has a certain suaveness and bounce that reflects the influence of swing era pianists like Nat "King" Cole. Parker is loose and fiery, pushing the band ahead with a stream of energetic, serpentine solos. On the second date, Bird's playing is somewhat more lyrical and subdued. He does seem to perk up on "Cool Blues,"however, perhaps spurred on by the punchy, immaculately phrased trumpet work of Herb Pomeroy. While some have suggested that Parker's talents were in decline in the '50s, AT STORYVILLE was recorded less than two years before Bird's death and clearly demonstrates he was still capable of playing with his typical humor, pure tone and flawless feel. Are You Passionate
Personnel includes: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, piano); Frank "Poncho" Sanpedro (vocals, guitar); Booker T. Jones (vocals, organ, vibraphone); Donald "Duck" Dunn (vocals, bass); Ralph Molina (vocals, drums); Pegi & Astrid Young (vocals); Tom Bray (trumpet); Billy Talbot (bass); Steve "Smokey" Potts (drums, bongos, tambourine). Producers: Neil Young, Booker T. Jones, Duck Dunn, Poncho Sampedro. Engineers include: Tim Mulligan, John Hanlon, Aaron Prellwitz. Recorded at The Site, Marin County, California and Toast, San Francisco, California. In combining members of his longtime band Crazy Horse and those of more recent accompanists Booker T. & the MG's, Neil Young effectively fuses the gritty guitar-rock of his salad days with churning soul grooves on AREYOU PASSIONATE? The '60s R&B influence is clear from the start, with opening cut "You're My Girl," which sounds like a cross between vintage Motown and one of Booker T.'s lost gems, all chirping organ and faux-Temptations backing vocals. Partially due to chronological circumstance, this album will probably come to be known to the larger world as the one that contains "Let's Roll." The song is Young's response to the World Trade Center attacks, the title coming from the reported call-to-arms of the passengers who brought down the plane targeted for the White House. In fact, ARE YOU PASSIONATE? is full of many more impressive tunes, not the least of which being "Going Home," which recalls Young/Crazy Horse's '70s work, the 3/4-time Otis Redding-style love ballad "When I Hold You in My Arms," and "Two Old Friends," perhaps the most striking tune, whose plea for tolerance rings truer and more open-hearted than "Let's Roll." As always, there's a boatload of Young's gloriously grungy guitar work to admire throughout the album as well. SKU: 1071181

Still Crazy After All These Years
Personnel: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar); Sivuca (vocals, accordion); Pete Carr, Joe Beck, Jerry Friedman, Hugh McCracken, John Tropea (electric guitar); Toots Thielmans (harmonica); Mike Brecker, Eddie Daniels, Phil Woods (saxophone); Leon Pendarvis, Richard Tee (piano); Bob James (electric piano); Barry Beckett, Ken Asher (keyboards); David Hood, Tony Levin, Gordon Edwards (bass); Roger Hawkins, Steve Gadd, Grady Tate (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion); Valerie Simpson, The Jessy Dixon Singers, The Chicago Community Choir (background vocals); Art Garfunkel, David Sanborn, Phoebe Snow,Patti Austin. Producers: Paul Simon, Phil Ramone, Art Garfunkel. STILL CRAZY marked the end of one era for Simon and pointed toward the beginning of another. Simon was always the kind of artist whose growth could be easily measured from album to album, as he progressed from and expanded upon his previous work. The songs here are the furthest logical extensions of the songwriting style he developed in the early '70s. The musical and lyrical sophistication of said style is at its apex; it was the best Paul Simon album possible at that time. From the brooding sexual disconsolation of "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" to the the barely veiled psychosis of the title track, STILL CRAZY is full of expertly crafted songs of neurosis and disaffection. Also at its peak is the Randy Newmanesque irony Simon was fond of practicing in the '70s, as on "You're Kind" and "Have A Good Time." Listeners must have thought there was nowhere left for Simon to go after this seeming creative peak. Little did they know, they hadn't heard nothin' yet. SKU: 1000141

Strictly Commercial (The Best Of Frank Zappa)
Full title: Strictly Commercial: The Best Of Frank Zappa. Personnel includes: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Flo & Eddie, Jean-Luc Ponty, Captain Beefheart, Steve Vai, The Mothers Of Invention, Lowell George, George Duke, Terry Bozzio, Aynsley Dunbar, Ike Willis, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Chester Thompson, Adrian Belew, Chad Wackerman, Moon Zappa. Producers: Frank Zappa, Tom Wilson. Compilation producer: Jill Christiansen. Recorded between 1966 and 1988. Includes liner notes by Terry Gilliam and Dan Oullette. Even though Zappa purists tend to loathe thissplendid 19-track compilation, there is no better introduction to the wild and wonderful world of Frank Zappa than STRICTLY COMMERCIAL. Throughout his long, celebrated career, Zappa essentially maintained two separate personas. At one end of the spectrum, he was a wicked satirist who performed such bizarre rock ditties as "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" and "Dancin' Fool." On the other end, he was a masterful composer and guitarist who created fascinating fusion instrumentals like "Peaches En Regalia" and even full-scale symphonic works. While you don't get any examples of Zappa's more elaborate musical pieces on STRICTLY COMMERCIAL, what you do get is track after track of clever, immaculately performed rock. Songs range from "Trouble Every Day," a 1966 blues-rock recording with The Mothers of Invention, to "Valley Girl," the 1982 hit single that Zappa recorded with his daughter Moon Unit on vocals. While the sheer volume of Zappa's work makes it impossible to include every career highpoint on a single disc collection, it's hard to imagine how you could create a better Zappa compilation than STRICTLY COMMERCIAL. 17 Dub Shots
Recorded at Jamaica Recording And Publishing Studio, Kingston, Jamaica. 17 DUB SHOTS FROM STUDIO ONE features dub versions of songs by artists including The SoundDimension, Jackie Mittoo & The Invaders, The Soul Agents, The Soul Vendors, The Heptones and others. 17 DUB SHOTS FROM STUDIO ONE is made up of warmly rendered cuts that demonstrate dub studio wizardry at its most tasteful. Warm echoes, cracks, and pops abound in source material that sounds as though it's of late-'60s/early-'70s vintage. The collection is also noteworthy for the wide range of source material over which the dubs have been created. The collection-opening "Starring Dub" relies on ephemeral washes of melody that recall the work of the electronically minded avatars of contemporary trance music. "Green Light" is one of the album's most memorable tracks--buried beneath a wash of reggae bleats is a funky vibraphone melody that sounds like something out a blaxploitation film. "Mr. Joe" almost sounds like a straight-ahead R&B cut, expect for the blaring echoes. There are bits of "Banana Walk" that are redolent of Indian music, while "Runnings" almost sounds like it has a foot in Martin Denny exotica. Perhaps what's best about this collection is one never knows what to expect next. SKU: 5089554

End Of Everything, The
Solo performer: Moby. Voodoo Child, Moby, released THE END OF EVERYTHING in England in 1996. Appearing in the U.S. the next year, it sported some changes and the moniker "Voodoo Child/Moby." Considering Moby's long association with the techno scene, the spare nature of this album may surprise some. It is an elegant, looping sound sculpture that can be either uplifting or profoundly sad for the listener. For Moby fanatics, the U.S. version features a remixed version of "Dog Heaven," as well as an extra minute-and-a-half of "Honest Love." It also replaces "Animal Sight" with "Reject." The music here--there are no vocals--consists largely of sparse electronics, ebbing and flowing in slow swells, and minimal beats. That said, itis a surprisingly engaging record. Of the three "Love" tracks, "Honest Love" is the most interesting (though "Patient Love" recalls some of the early synth work of New Order in a pleasantly nostalgic way), featuring piano, a windswept backdrop, and quietly jittering rhythms. "Slow Motion Suicide" is a slow, stately synthesized affair that suggests a pipe organ playing to distant, electronic birds. The last track, "Reject," is a stately continuation of that piece, gradually and almost imperceptibly slowing down over the course of its 18-minute length. SKU: 4129894

Big Boi And Dre Present...Outkast
Outkast: Big Boi, Dre. Additional personnel includes: Killer Mike. "The Whole World" (w/ Killer Mike) won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. While on the surface, Outkast's initial single, 1994's "Player's Ball," may have seemed like just another hip-hop-word-of-the-moment single, closer attention revealed the mushed-up, twister slang of the lyrics and the oddly droll angle on Yuletide packedinto a pop-rap single of gangstas at play. Thereafter, Big Boi and Dre produced three solid, but under-appreciated albums in the '90s, remaining on the periphery of stardom with the occasional hit, and stirring a bit of controversy with "Rosa Parks." While enough of a buzz had built by 2000, no one could have predicted the intensely beautiful chaos and disorder permeating STANKONIA. From the smooth rasp of "So Fresh, So Clean" to the dark, rising anger encased in a hook too good not to be the #1 single it was "Ms. Jackson," to the fury of drums, tongue-twisters and revival refrains on the brilliantly incomprehensible "B.O.B." BIG BOI & DRE PRESENT includes all aforementioned hits and will likely add a few to the Outkast legend as the duo somehow manages to expand its horizons further. Of particular note, "The Whole World" starts off in a vaudeville world replete with tympani before a singsong chorus gives way to hip-hop style, an alluring and starkly original work, as is most of Outkast's catalogue of which this compilation with three new tracks gives a perfect sampling. Master Of Puppets
MASTER OF PUPPETS was Metallica's last album with bass player Cliff Burton. Burton was killed in a traffic accident. He was replacedby Jason Newsted. Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Cliff Burton (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums). Recorded at Sweet Silence Studios, Copenhagen, Denmark from September through December, 1985. Metallica's irresistible rise to the top continued with this enigmatic 1986 album. A constant touring unit by this point, their combination of light and dark and their deft staccato delivery, especially on the title track, came brusquely through. Their ever-lengthening arrangements (three songs came in at over eight minutes), bolstered by the precise snap of Hetfield's vocals, testified to their undeniable power. The striding "Battery," the darkly lit "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," as well as the complex instrumental, "Orion," all gave powerful testament to their ever-developing skill and vision. SKU: 1004923

Waiting For The Sun
Also available with THE DOORS on 1 cassette. NOTES: The Doors: Jim Morrison (vocals); Robby Krieger (guitar); Ray Manzarek (keyboards); John Densmore (drums). Additional personnel: Leroy Vinegar (acoustic bass); Douglas Lubahn, Kerry Magness (electric bass). The Doors' third album showed the band in transition, even as "Hello, I Love You" became the Doors' second number-1 hit. The band's songs set Morrison's poetic and often bizarre lyrical imagery against Krieger'sbluesy guitar and the spiraling keyboards of Manzarek. Their chart success, however, alienated them from their original audience, who no longer considered them "underground" enough, while their concert audiences increasingly consisted of teenage girls, drawn by Morrison's sexy performing style. "Hello, I Love You" pushed them firmly into the rock mainstream. SKU: 5046549
