Personnel includes: Winston "Burning Spear" Rodney (vocals); Earl "Chinna" Smith, Ranchie McClean, Brinsley Forde, Donald Kingsley, Donald Griffiths (guitar); Herman Marquis (alto saxophone); Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall (tenor saxophone); Bobby Ellis (trumpet); Vin Gordon (trombone); Rico Rodriguez,Dick Cuthell (horns); Earl Lindo, Bernard Harvey, Michael "Ibo" Cooper, Courtney Hemmings (keyboards); Robbie Shakespeare, Aston "Family Man" Barrett, George Oban (bass); Sly Dunbar, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Angus Gaye (drums). Recorded at Harry J Studio, Kingston, Jamaica. Originally released on Island (9556). Includes liner notes by David Katz. If Bob Marley was the populist spokesman of the Rastafarianism movement, then Burning Spear (Winston Rodney) was clearly, through his music, the intellectual spin doctor. His albums are gentle history lessons in black culture; they tend to inform rather than preach. This is one of a number of excellent albums built around his theme of Marcus Garvey, the great leader of the Back To Africa movement. Spear is surrounded by the finest session musicians in Jamaica, in addition to Sly and Robbie. In assembling a record collection there are always a few token Marley records included. At least one Burning Spear album should be made compulsory. SKU: 1084570

Beggar On A Beach Of Gold
Mike & The Mechanics: Paul Carrack (vocals, keyboards); Paul Young (vocals); Mike Rutherford (guitar, bass, keyboards); Peter Van Hooke (drums). Additional personnel: Clem Clempson (guitar); Adrian Lee, BA Robertson, Wix (keyboards); Gary Wallis, Andy Newmark (drums); Dale Newman (programming); Rich Mendelson, Dave Frangioni (programming); Tessa Niles, Katie Cassoon (background vocals). Producers: Christopher Neil, Mike Rutherford. Engineers: Paul Gomersall, Nick Davis. 1995's BEGGAR ON A BEACH OF GOLD is by far the most eclectic of Mike And The Mechanics' four studio albums. The group, led as always by singers Paul Young and Paul Carrack, stretches itself quite a bit over the course of these 13 songs. "Another Cup of Cup," which recalls Carrack's short-lived stint in Squeeze, is a highlight, as is the soulful "Over My Shoulder." "The Ghost of Sex and You," one of the few Mechanics songs that vaguely recalls Mike Rutherford's day job (Genesis), is an oddity. So are covers of the standard "I Believe (When I Fall in Love it Will Be Forever)"--really quitegood--and Smokey Robinson's "You Really Got a Hold on Me"--really quite terrible--and the AOR-styled title track. The high points outweigh the low, overall. SKU: 1005262

Mountains
Personnel: Mary Timony (vocals, various instruments); Christina Files (various instruments); Pee Wee Fist (euphonium); John McEntire (synthesizer, vibraphone); Ash Bowie (percussion). Recorded at 84K and Boston & Sonics, Charlestown, Massachusetts; Electrical Audio, Chicago, Illinois. Perhaps the most profound difference between Mary Timony's solo debut and her work with Helium lies in the former's sparseness. The songs' basic structures and tenor are the same, but where Helium's music overwhelms the listener with a torrent of sound, Timony's solo work strips the tunes down to their timeless folk roots. On MOUNTAINS, the songs feel tethered to the midst of the 16th Century, with Timony the traveling troubadour performing her poems of fantasy and despair. "Poison Moon" is a solid testament to this ageless quality, opening with wandering strings and curiously juxtaposed lyrics. "Painted Horses" questions whether Timony exists at all, as she plays lightly with distortion while meandering around a twisted, twisting love song."I Fire Myself" reveals her continued ability to turn reality inside out, in a tale created to crawl into your waking nightmares. She even successfully reprises an old Helium number, a pared-down "13 Bees" from the NO GUITARS EP. MOUNTAINS is a refreshingly subtle solo debut from one of the most prolific collaborators of the '90s. SKU: 1030761

Into The Great Wide Open
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Tom Petty (vocals, guitar, percussion); Mike Campbell (guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, keyboards, bass); Benmont Tench (accordion, piano); Howie Epstein (bass, background vocals); Stan Lynch (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Jeff Lynne (guitar, keyboards, bass, background vocals); Richard Tandy (synthesizer); Roger McGuinn (background vocals). Producers: Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Jeff Lynne. Recorded at Rumbo Recorders, Studio C, Canoga Park, California. Petty once represented the new wave of pop in the late 70s. There was an edge of punkiness to his music and that has served him well throughout his career. Very few stars as unassuming as Petty have courted all audiences and succeeded. This is a Jeff Lynne production, which would usually have had pundits making a heretic cross with their fingers. Fortunately, it was listened tofor what it was: an excellent album of Petty songs played by the best support band in the world. "Learning To Fly," for example, has a simple repeated four-chord pattern, F C Am G, and out of this Petty has woven the perfect pop song. One of many. SKU: 1001913

Lenny
Personnel: Lenny Kravitz (vocals, various instruments); Henry Hersch (string arranger, Hammond organ); Craig Ross (electric guitar, Hammond organ); David Baron (synthesizer). "Dig In" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. LENNY shows that Mr. Kravitz doesn't plan on stepping down from his pedestal atop the rock world any time soon. Following his 8X platinum GREATEST HITS package, Lenny's self-titled release is appropriately his most personal yet. The multi-talented Kravitz produced and wrote the album, and played most of the instruments himself. "Battlefield Of Love" has a cool, effortless vibe and an indelible, radio-friendly hook. "If I Could Fall In Love" and "A Million Miles Away" both feature strong vocals and effects-laden choruses. "Yesterday Is Gone (My Dear Kay)" is a sorrowful ballad that ranks amongst Kravitz's best. "Believe in Me" (with its effective acoustic guitar solo) and "Stillness Of Heart" (sporting an excellent stringarrangement) show off this craftsman's melodic songwriting skills. "God Save Us All" is a guaranteed arena anthem, while "Bank Robber Man" is an account of being falsely accused of a bank heist. LENNY makes its statement in a slightly more subtle fashion than Kravitz's previous efforts, but is no less soulful. SKU: 1067665

Best Of Hootie & The Blowfish, The (1993 Thru 2003)
Hootie & The Blowfish: Darius Rucker (vocals, guitar, dobro, percussion); Mark Bryan (guitar, mandolin, piano, percussion, background vocals); Dean Felber (piano, Clavinet, bass, background vocals); Jim "Soni" Sonefeld (piano, drums, percussion, loops, background vocals). Additional personnel: Patrick Warren (chamberlain); David Crosby (background vocals). Producers include: Don Gehman,Don Was, Pete Masitti, Spencer Proffer, Mark Williams. Compilation producers: Hootie & The Blowfish, Karen Ahmed. Recorded between 1994 & 2003. Includes liner notes by David Wild. Cinderella stories don't come much sweeter than the tale of Hootie & the Blowfish. An unassuming quartet that made their hay playing before college crowds, these Southern natives, led by soulful frontman Darius Rucker, seemingly came out of nowhere thanks to a solid grassroots operation and a devoted fanbase. THE BEST OF HOOTIE & THE BLOWFISH, though, contains the true key to the band's enormous, multi-platinum success--well-written songs packed with hooks, harmonies, and heartfelt sentiment. Among the originals sprinkled throughout this anthology is the anthemic breakout smash "Hold My Hand" (featuring vocal harmonies by David Crosby), uber-ballad "Let Her Cry," and the wistful, organ-drenched "Old Man & Me (When I Get to Heaven)." The band's later material also features the solid mix of Mark Bryan's twang-laced guitar playing and Rucker's deep croon that results in lesser-known nuggets such as the call-and-response "I Will Wait" and equally hook-filled "Space." Still fans at heart, Hootie and company also prove to be excellent interpreters of material by a wide range of idols, including Led Zeppelin ("Hey Hey What Can I Do"), Bill Withers ("Use Me"), and obscure Canadian rockers 54.40 ("I Go Blind"). Gumbo
Personnel: Dr. John (vocals, guitar, piano); Alvin Robinson (guitar, background vocals); Ken Klimak (guitar); Harold Battiste (clarinet, saxophone); Sidney George (harmonica, saxophone);Moe Bechamin (saxophone, background vocals); Lee Allen, David Lastie (saxophone); Melvin Lastie (cornet); Streamline (trombone); Ronnie Barron (piano, electric piano, organ, background vocals); Jimmy Calhoun (bass); Freddie Staehle (drums); Richard "Didimus" Washington (percussion); Shirley Goodman, Tami Lynn, Robbie Montgomery, Jessie Smith (background vocals). Recorded at Sound City Studio, Van Nuys, California. Originally released on Atco. Includes liner notes by Mac "Dr. John" Rebennack. After a series of albums which presented a unique mix of voodoo exotica and southern Louisiana funk grooves, Dr. John turned his sights on the rich heritage that informed his vision. The resultant GUMBO is a complete winner from start to finish. Opening with "Iko Iko," which dates from the early '50s, he celebrates many of the prime musical influences of his youth in New Orleans; standards from the Crescent City songbook, with nods to key players such as Professor Longhair, Lee Allen, Huey Smith, and Earl King. He even records his own 1960 tune "Somebody Changed the Lock," as well as "Mess Around" by Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun (originally written for and recorded by Ray Charles). Produced by the complementary team of Jerry Wexler and New Orleans' own Harold Battiste, the music is rife with potent grooves in support of topflight songs. This album is an essential. SKU: 3100938

And Now The Legacy Begins
Producers: Dream Warriors, Split Personality, Krush, Skad, Ron Nelson, Maximum 60. Recorded at Apache Studios and Bfp Studios, Toronto, Canada. Perhaps one of hip-hop's most overlooked LPs AND NOW THE LEGACY BEGINS was dismissed as "happy rap" by many listeners but garnered plenty of respect from other musical practitioners (they went on to collaborate with everybody from legendary Detroit jazzman Slim Gaillard to Gang Starr). The duo's first single "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style" hit somewhere between the abstraction of De La Soul and the goofiness of Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, effectively polarizing their audience into alterna-rap fans and hard-core skeptics. The albumdoes contain generous amounts of jazz-inflected grooves which anticipated the success of Digable Planets, Jazzmatazz and the entire acid jazz sub-genre (in fact it was a review of this album that occasioned the first usage of that term in the U.S. music press). However, a thorough listen reveals a whole range of darker tones. The title track even manages to make the synth hook from Tom Tom Club's "Genius Of Love" sound ominous, while lyrically, King Lou and Capital Q cobble together a highly individual vocabulary out of references to comic books, Star Wars and D&D to articulate their experiences coming up in Toronto's Jane & Finch housing projects. Parcel Of Rogues, A
1973's PARCEL OF ROGUES is one of Steeleye Span's best albums, representing the era when the group's balance between traditional English folk music and good ol' rock and roll was at its surest. Neither too rock for the folk purists nor too twee for the rockers, PARCEL OF ROGUES has charms to delight both camps. This is most clear on the opening track "One Misty Moisty Morning," one of Steeleye Span's finest songs. Maddy Prior's beautiful, clear voice mixes with the half-acoustic/half-electric arrangement seamlessly, and the song's haunting refrain becomes a actual pop hook by its second appearance. The album also features excellent vocals by Tim Hart and the band'sother members, including Peter Knight and Bob Johnson's excellent rendition of "Hares on the Mountain." The album's other highlight, "Alison Gross," is probably the closest thing to an all-out rock song the group ever recorded. SKU: 1002776

Cabbage Alley
The Meters: Arthur Neville (vocals, piano, organ, tambourine, cowbell); Leo Nocentelli (guitar, tambourine); George Porter Jr. (bass); Joseph Modeliste (drums, guiro, woodblock, cowbell). Additional personnel: Cyril Neville, Squirrel (congas). Producers: Allen Toussaint, Marshall Sehorn. Originally released on Reprise (2076). Includes liner notes by Bunny Matthews and Barry Hansen. When the Meters moved from their bankrupted indie label Josie to Warner Brothers for 1972's CABBAGE ALLEY, they shifted from funky instrumentals to soulful vocalizing. Leading the way to this new direction was guitarist Leo Nocentelli, who wrote or co-wrote most of these songs. True to Nocentelli's New Orleans origins, a spirit of jocular abandon winds its way throughout this album. Among the most notable examplesare the chugging and infectious "Soul Island," inspired by a tour of the Caribbean, and the mid-tempo grit of a dance theme called "Do the Dirt." Elsewhere, Nocentelli's compositions include the psychedelic soul of "Stay Away," and "The Flower Song," a romantic instrumental tailor-made for a candlelit dinner. Altering this carefree atmosphere are a pair of consciousness-raising tracks: "You've Got to Change (You've Got to Reform)," and the Band-like poignancy of "Lonesome and Unwanted People," featuring keyboardist Art Neville's soulful vocals. Neville's contributions also include his cover of Neil Young's "Birds," and a rewrite of Professor Longhair's "Hey Now Baby" that doubles as the rollicking title track. "Chug Chug Chug-A-Lug (Push and Shove) Parts I & II" has also been added as a bonus track for this reissue. SKU: 6466985
