Too Much Fun
The Holy Modal Rounders: PeterStampfel (vocals, guitar, banjo, madolin, fiddle); Steve Weber (vocals, guitar); Dave Reisch (vocals, bass); Don Rooke (slide guitar). After nearly two decades of not performing together, Holy Modal Rounders founders Steve Weber and Peter Stampfel reunited, playing shows and recording this 1999 release. Undaunted by changing times or their own increasing ages (Stampfel was sixty when this was recorded, Weber a few years behind), this is as riveting, raw and real as their first recordings from the early '60s. TOO MUCH FUN! is, like the group's other efforts, a mix of obscure and beloved covers and a few originals by the Rounders and/or their cohorts. Of the former, their are a handful of traditional numbers, as well as selections by Roy Acuff, Pee Wee King and Blind Willie Johnson. Among the latter are songs by each of the two members (including revisited versions of "Euphoria" and "Antoinette") and Michael Hurley's "Tea Song." Stampfel and Weber continue to imbue their performances with incredible spur-of-the-moment, flying-by-the-seat-of-their-pants honesty. This disc finds the Rounders as irresistible as ever. Misplaced Childhood [Remastered]
Marillion: Fish (vocals); Steve Rothery (guitar); Mark Kelly (keyboards);Pete Trewavas (bass); Ian Mosley (percussion). Recorded at Hansa Ton Studios, Berlin, Germany between March & May 1985. Includes liner notes by Robert Mead, Mark Wilkinson, Pete Trewavas, Mark Kelly, Steve Rothery. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew (1998, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). Marillion were at the forefront of the brief progressive rock revival of the 80s, and as such had to endure constant critical carping about their similarities to Genesis. Led at this stage of their career by Fish, they reached a creative and commercial peak with this 1985 release, a concept album based loosely around the singer's childhood. What saved the album from empty bombast was Marillion's sudden emergence as a skilled and melodic rock group, exemplified by the UK hit single "Kayleigh". While nothing else on the album was quite able to match this song, the rest is still worthy of re-investigation. SKU: 1001073

Sevas Tra [Digipak]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Contains an untitled hidden track following "Jonestown Tea." Otep: Otep Shamaya (vocals); Rob (guitar); Evil J (bass); Moke (drums). Otep instantly raises the bar on today's female-fronted metal band scene. Signed in the wake of some serious Ozzfest buzz (the band landed a coveted spot on the tour with no record deal), the California quartet makes acts such as Kittie or Snake River Conspiracy seem tame by comparison. The band's first full-length, SEVAS TRA packs a menacing groovecore punch. Part poet and part Barbie-doll growler, enchanting vocalist Otep Shamaya could easily give Corey Taylor (Slipknot) or Phil Anselmo (Pantera) a run for their money. Shamaya's self-proclaimed poeticism clearly suggests that the scary-sounding band name is a simple anagram. Otep's music is at times, crushing, anthemic, and venemously vengeful. Think Slayer-meets-RATM for "T.R.I.C," one of many brutal tracks, expertly produced by metal veteran Terry Date. "Posession" and "Blood Pigs" capture Pantera-like intensity with mountainous grooves. Recurring lyrical themes address empowerment ("Battle Ready"), politics ("Thots"), and especially the issue of abuses committed in what were once relationships oftrust ("Tortured"). "Jonestown Tea" contains a disturbing twist on the Oedipal section of the Doors' "The End.," while "Emptee" makes use of a haunting Nine Inch Nails vibe. The future of heavy music is suddenly much prettier with the release of SEVAS TRA. SKU: 1072597

Apple Venus Vol.1
XTC: Andy Partidge (vocals, guitar); Colin Moulding (vocals, bass). Additional personnel: Dave Gregory (guitar, piano, keyboards, background vocals); Guy Barker (trumpet, flugelhorn); Steve Sidwell (trumpet); Nick Davis, Haydn Bendall (keyboards); Prairie Prince (drums); London Session Orchestra. After an incredible seven-year absence from recording, XTC returned with an orchestra in tow. The intervening years found the band embroiled in legal problems and when they finally emerged to embark on this new work, theywere reduced to a duo. Guitarist Dave Gregory departed, leaving just founders and songwriters Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding. The orchestral settings which became the identity of this first volume create vast and often theatrical settings for the songs, which don't stray far from what one would expect from XTC (that is, when they choose not to rock). "River of Orchids" opens the album and announces their intentions as the arrangement slowly comes into view. Setting aside most worldly concerns for affairs of the heart, the album has a thematic unity that gives the whole thing the feel of a song cycle. Contributing only two songs to Partridge's nine, Moudling's "Frivolous Tonight" is a real gem, possessing a powerful beauty wrapped in hypnotic melancholia. SKU: 1000364

Daisies Of The Galaxy
Eels: E (vocals); Butch (drums). Addiional personnel includes: Jim Lang (conductor); Wayne Bergeron, Andy Martin, Chris Bleth (horns); Mickey Petralia (programming); Peter Buck, Grant Lee Phillips. Producers: E, Michael Simpson. Engineers include: Wally Gagel, Jim Lang, Michael Simpson. Recorded from March-May 1999. Having used ELECTRO-SHOCK BLUES as a dark musical therapy session in the wake of losing his mom and sister, Eels frontman E (aka Mark Oliver Everett) returned with a more optimistic follow-up,one steeped in gorgeous pop-craft. Utilizing a vocal style not unlike Beck's creaky delivery, E created songs marked by unblinking, Randy Newman-like observations, minus the sardonic edge. E touches on a range of subjects--he pays tribute to his late mom's love of winged creatures (the gently bouncy "I Like Birds"), sings of unrequited love (the heartbreaking "Jeannie's Diary") and bemoans the evils of advertising (the irresistible "Tiger in My Tank"). Like fellow pop savant Jon Brion, E calls upon a handful of modern-rock pals, including Peter Buck and Grant Lee Phillips, to season his idiosyncratic arrangements. Among the most engaging numbers are the Nilsson-inspired "It's a Motherf#&!@r," as well as the Vince Guaraldi-flavored "A Daisy Through Concrete" and "The Sound of Fear" The last of these is a classic straight out of the Phil Spector/Brian Wilson school of arranging. The hidden track, "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues," is an optimistic number that nicely ties up this great collection, which finds E emerging from the dark so that the healing can begin. SKU: 1029072

Vagabonds Of The Western World
VAGABONDS OF THE WESTERN WORLD is not only the last record that Thin Lizzy recorded as a trio, but an album that signaled the band's adoption of a more hard-rock sound and an abandonment of its prior harder-edged prog-rock approach. VAGABONDS also contained Thin Lizzy's breakthrough hit, a modern update of the traditional folk song "Whisky in the Jar." Once again turning to his Irish heritage, Phil Lynott reaches into Celtic mythology to create a wayfaring fictional character who traverses through a mystical world, a character who appears in the Hendrixian title track, and in the moody "Heroand the Madman." On the later, Lynott's spoken-word intro sounds not unlike something Jim Morrison might have written. When Lynott isn't relying upon magical beings for inspiration, his songs speak from the perspective of the perpetual outsider. Throughout the album, the band demonstrates its mastery of the blues ("Slow Blues," "Broken Dreams"), folk ("A Song For While I'm Away"), waltzes ("Randolph's Tango"), and Faces-like boogie ("Mama Nature Said.") The guitar-driven "Whisky in the Jar" may have been the album's hit, but "The Rocker," an anthem that became a precursor to the later success of JAILBREAK, is as hard-hitting as it gets. SKU: 1011245

Serendipity
Much like its namesake film, the SERENDIPITY soundtrack walks the tightrope of romantic notions without falling off into a pool of mawkish sentiment. This was musically accomplished by rounding up material from a number of critically acclaimed established artists and their equally promising younger peers. Representing the old guard are Shawn Colvin with a lush ode to pre-determined love ("When You Know"), Annie Lennox and her trip-hop soaked reading of a Bob Marley classic ("Waiting In Vain") and David Gray with a chiming instrumental ("January Rain"). The breadth of notable cuts also includes thelate Nick Drake's breathy "Northern Sky," Louis Armstrong's swinging "Cool Yule" and Chantal Kreviazuk's twangy "This Year." Other artists featured on this tastefully executed collection are Evan & Jaron (the heartfelt "The Distance"), Heather Nova (a simmering "Like Lovers Do") and newcomer Bap Kennedy (the jazzy "Moonlight Kiss"). SERENDIPITY turns out to be a welcome change from the usual banal musical normally culled for date movies. SKU: 1069228

Abandon
Deep Purple: Ian Gillan (vocals); Steve Morse (guitar); Jon Lord (organ, keyboards); Roger Glover (bass); Ian Paice (drums). Recorded at Greg Rike Studios, Altamonte Springs, Florida from 1997-98. ABANDON, the follow-up to PURPENDICULAR, marks guitarist Steve Morse's second appearance on a Deep Purple disc. Steve sounds more comfortable in the band, and continues to add his veteran touch in a powerful way. "Any Fule Kno That" is a funky little number, while "Almost Human" does indeed show Mr. Morse settling in and finding his groove with a rip-roaring solo. "Don't Make Me Happy" shows the boys taking a bluesy turn, while "Seventh Heaven" returns to the group's heavy, vintage style. "Fingers to the Bone" is a melodic number with an acoustic rhythm part. Jon Lord's fantastic keyboard solos accentuate tunes like "Jack Ruby" and "She Was," and his organ goes one-on-one with Morse's playing on "Evil Louie." "'69" is a jam that reminisces about the band's partying days in Britain. "Bludsucker" closes the album and features the unmistakable shrieking of lead throatIan Gillan. Revitalized with the addition of Steve Morse, ABANDON makes it less and less difficult to grasp that Ritchie Blackmore is no longer in the group. The band is tight and heavy, and the record is definitely worth a spin. SKU: 1006908

Machine
Static-X: Wayne Static (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming); Tripp Eisen (guitar); Tony Campos (bass, background vocals); Ken Jay (drums). Recorded at Studio 508, Los Angeles, California from October 2000-January 2001. The follow-up to Static-X's 1999 debut WISCONSIN DEATH TRIP finds the hard-hitting quartet continuing down the same industrial-flavored path of jackhammer tempi, leaden guitar crunch and crashing rhythms. Despite the amicable departure of guitarist Koichi Fukuda, former Dope axe- wielder Tripp Eisen does a fine job fitting in alongside founding membersWayne Static, Keny Jay, and Tony Campos. Working on the gloom and doom side of the tracks, Static-X keep things interesting with the kind of controlled chaos that makes for an interesting exercise in manipulating dynamics. This studio experimentation encompasses everything from an unholy alliance of ambient textures and choppy industrial-strength riffs ("Permanence") to electronic blips and tortuously drawn out sturm and drang that could double as the soundtrack to Armageddon ("A Dios Alma Perdido"). Elsewhere, sputtering electronics and vocalist Static's defiant howl drive the breakneck "This Is Not" while a more sinister aura grips the considerably less frantic "Cold." Not for the faint of heart, MACHINE churns up and spits out any thoughts of Static-X suffering from a sophomore jinx. SKU: 1061018

Best Of Sonny Rollins, The
Personnel include: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Clifford Brown (trumpet); Richie Powell, Thelonious Monk, Tommy Flanagan (piano); George Morrow (bass instrument); Art Blakey (drums); Modern Jazz Quartet. Liner Note Author: Ira Gitler. Recording information: Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey (1951 - 1956); Apex Studios, New York, New York. Though most everything Sonny Rollins recorded for Prestige between 1951 and 1956 is worth owning (those willing to take the plunge should purchase his COMPLETE PRESTIGE RECORDINGS), this 10-song collection is a fine introduction. In addition to representing his full, lush tone and frontal attack, these tracks display Rollins's kinetic rhythmic approach and brilliant harmonic conception; he often seems to be deconstructing tunes from the inside out. His signature tune, "St. Thomas," with its memorabletheme and snaking lead lines (not to mention Max Roach's infectious, Calypso-flavored polyrhythms), kicks off the disc in high gear. Rollins's Prestige dates were especially notable for their personnel, and this set does not disappoint on that count. Thelonious Monk sits in on a lovely reading of "More Than You Know," Clifford Brown contributes his legendary trumpet chops to "I Feel a Song Coming On," and two cuts from Rollins's collaboration with the Modern Jazz Quartet showcase Milt Jackson's shimmering vibraphone. The set closes with "Tenor Madness," which features Rollins going toe-to-toe with John Coltrane, backed by the rhythm section of Miles Davis's first quintet, and the results are nothing less than incendiary. This is a superb, if brief, overview of the saxophone giant's early work. SKU: 6582609

Light User Syndrome, The [Remastered]
TheFall include: Mark E. Smith, Brix Smith (vocals); Julia Nagle (keyboards). Includes liner notes by Daryl Easlea and John Peel. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Coming nearly two decades into the band's long and amazingly prolific career, 1996's LIGHT USERS SYNDROME is an excellent example of The Fall's '90s work. Though unfortunately lacking the presence of Mark E. Smith's ex-wife Brix, who had briefly rejoined the band for this album's predecessor, CEREBRAL CAUSTIC, LIGHT USERS SYNDROME nevertheless maintains some of that album's guitar-pop-oriented vibe. It is a welcome return to form for the band after the more electronic releases of the early '90s. The opening "D.I.Y. Meat" is one of Smith's best songs in ages, an impassioned rant about vegetarianism and politics, while the album ending "Secession Man" slyly quotes the Kinks. LIGHT USERS SYNDROME is a worthwhile starting point for neophyte fans daunted by The Fall's prodigious output. SKU: 1074445

All-American Rejects, The (UK Version)
The All-American Rejects: Tyson Ritter (vocals, bass); Nick Wheeler (guitar, keyboards, drums, programming). Recorded at Mission Sound and Headgear Studio, Brooklyn, New York. Tyson Ritter and Nick Wheeler, the two college-age clean-cut men who form the nexus of the All-American Rejects, have aknack for driving home a pop hook. Clearly weaned on power pop's history from the Beach Boys and Big Star to the Cars and Weezer and other more modern proponents, the Oklahoma outfit serves up gentle pop radiance with a hint of Replacements-style brashness on its self-titled debut. The All-American Rejects' songs capture a youthful simplicity without slipping into juvenile lyrics like many bands with a similar sound. There is an endearing innocence in tunes like "My Paper Heart" with its simple opening entreaty "please just don't play with me/my paper heart will bleed" over insistent acoustic guitar before a quiet storm replete with a tympani-sounding instrument. Ornate instrumentation abounds, but it augments the music, never seeming forced or out or place, likely a combination of prescience on the pair's part and the experienced hand of producer-engineer Tim O'Heir (Sebadoh, Superdrag, Possum Dixon). In fact, the album's hallmark is a bewitching, summery, infectious pop consistency. SKU: 1085773

12 X 5 [SACD] [Remastered]
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals); Keith Richards, Brian Jones (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Includes the original release liner notes by Andrew Loog Oldham. 12 X 5 includes material recorded by the Stones at Chicago's Chess Studios (home to the band's idols Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf) on their first US tour. Though this document of the group's early R&B period kicks off with a couple of covers from unsurprising sources (Chuck Berry's "Around and Around,") Mick and Keith waste little time in displaying their own compositional acumen. The acoustic-based, bluesy "Good Times, Bad Times" harkens back to even earlier, more seminal Stones influences than Berry, as does the instrumental "2120 South Michigan Avenue," where the blues-obsessed Jagger's harp is featured a la his hero Little Walter. The downbeat, Arthur Alexanderish "Congratulations" is an effective expression of romantic melancholy, complete with acoustic guitar solo. The slide guitar chords on "Grown Up Wrong" echo another early blues influence, Elmore James. The milestones on this album are two R&B covers to which the Stones take more than a rote approach, "It's All Over Now" and the majestic "Time Is On MySide," which they make completely their own.
