Underwater Sunlight
Tangerine Dream: Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, Paul Haslinger. Recorded at The Dream Studios, Berlin, Germany. Includes liner notes by Jonathan Miller. UNDERWATER SUNLIGHT is the second Tangerine Dream record with a clearly defined central theme-in this case, the ocean. (Their first concept album was the studio predecessor, LE PARC). One may speculate that the band's concurrent and successful soundtrack work inspired their newfound interestin making cinematic records. The song cycle opens with the two-part meditation "Song of the Whale," featuring digitally-produced "acoustic" guitars. This epic captures the feeling of the sun rising over the sea, the play of waves over the sand, and the gentle rollicking and deep moan of the eponymous mammal. Each of the succeeding tracks recreates an element of the hydrosphere: dancing dolphins, manta rays, scuba diving. Perhaps the most impressive track is the closing "Underwater Twilight," wherein lulling synths create the effect of sun-dappled waters, eventually giving way to an urgent, roiling tide. If you can't get to the beach, UNDERWATER SUNLIGHT will take you there. SKU: 1080023

Voodoo
Personnel includes: D'Angelo (vocals, various instruments, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums); Method Man, Redman, Q Tip (vocals); Charlie Hunter, Raphael Saadiq, (guitar, bass); C. Edward Alford, Mike Campbell (guitar); Roy Hargrove (trumpet, flugelhorn, horns); James Payser (keyboards); Pino Palladino (bass); Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson (drums); Giovanni Midalgo (congas); DJ Premier (programming). Producers: D'Angelo, DJ Premier, Raphael Saadiq. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York. VOODOO won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. The song was also nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. When D'Angelo popped on the scene in '97 with his critical and commercial breakthrough BROWN SUGAR, he brought a gush of refreshing air to the musty world of soulful, sensual R&B. When VOODOO was released, little in the R&B world had changed, as the same stale, color-by-numbers vocals sung over the simplest of beats--ripped off from Teddy Riley or Timbaland--dominated the genre. But once again, the singer/songwriter (for that's what he is) dropped a dose of energy into the soul planet with his invigorating, jazzy, funky, constantly metamorphosing sophomore effort. While much of VOODOO is not entirely original, D'Angelo does wear his influenceson his sleeve, particularly those of Prince and Marvin Gaye. D'Angelo does so many things well that by the time he is finished, it's hard to question whether his sound is his own or an exacting mesh of all that's come before. Truly it doesn't matter, for VOODOO is so endearingly crafty and knee-weakeningly seductive, it's practically impossible to close your heart to it. From the free-jazzy, trippy old-school-dragged-through-the-blues muck of "Devil's Pie" to the straightforward torch singing of "Untitled," VOODOO mesmerizes and hypnotizes with soul both familiar and brand new. A tasty treat. SKU: 1028456

Modulate [ECD]
Solo performer: Bob Mould (vocals, various instruments). Recorded at Granny 6, New York, New York and Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York. Bob Mould's fifth solo album, and his first after a four-year self-imposed retirement (during which he worked as a writer and script supervisor for World Championship Wrestling), is about as big a change as his first solo album, 1989's delicate and introspective WORKBOOK, had been from his days in Husker Du. This is to say that although MODULATE sounds quite different on a casual first listen, further exploration reveals that Mould's familiar themes and singular writing and performing style are present and accounted for. The difference on MODULATE is that for the first time in his career, Mould introduces synthesizers and other electronic instruments into his music. Although the album was initially touted as Mould's foray into full-blown electronica, the electronics are actually rather sparingly applied; only a couple of tracks, most notably the opening "180 Rain," do away with the guitars entirely. Most of the rest of the songs, particularly the moving "Author's Lament," would be right at home on any of Mould's previous solo records. MODULATE is at heart not unlike Neil Young's TRANS: an album that isless of a stylistic sidestep than it initially appears. SKU: 1072613

Tellin' Stories
The Charlatans U.K.: Rob Collins (vocals, keyboards); Tim Burgess (vocals); Mark Collins (guitar); Martin Blunt (bass); Jon Brookes (drums); Dave Charles (percussion). Additional personnel: Martin Duffy (keyboards). Producers: Charlatans U.K., Dave Charles, Ric Peet. Recorded at Monnow Valley Studios, Rockfield Studios, Wales. One UK indie band to have well and truly lasted the course, the Charlatans are now seen as old lags of a new scene. With this, their mostsuccessful album to date, they lifted themselves from a pit of despair after the tragic death of keyboard player Rob Collins. Tragic and ironic because Collins gave their sound an original edge with his full-sounding Hammond organ. His replacement to complete the recording of this album was Martin Duffy from Primal Scream. Excellent songs such as "North Country Boy" and "How High" are minor classics and the final instrumental doodle, "Rob's Theme," is a fitting tribute to Collins. SKU: 1000078

My Xperience Vol.1
Personnel includes: Rodney "Bounty Killer" Price, Fugees, Busta Rhymes, Raekwon, Jeru The Damaja, Dennis Brown, Barrington Levy, Junior Reid, Beenie Man, Anthony Malvo, Red Rose, Richie Stephens (vocals); Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Lloyd "Gitsy" Willis, Reggae Jesus (various instruments). Producers include: Sly & Robbie, Wyclef & Lauryn Hill, Rodney "Bounty Killer" Price. Engineers include: Wyclef, The RZA, 4th Disciple, Troy Hightower. In the rough-and-tumble '90s, Bounty Killer (along with nemesis Beenie Man) was one of the premier DJs to emerge from the hard-core dancehall scene. MY XPERIENCE is Bounty Killer's impressive 1996 compilation of hot Jamaican singles that feature him alongside a boatload of guest artists. The lines between hip-hop and reggae seem blurred as some of rap's biggest stars appear including Jeru Da Damaja ("Suicide or Murder"), Raekwon ("War Face [Ask fi War] Remix") and The Fugees (the ambitious "Hip Hopera [`Mr. Punk']"). Bounty Killer's huge appeal always stemmed from songs that combined slack lyrics and hard-core depictions of street life. The album's "Gun Down" and "Guns & Roses" (with Anthony Malvo and Red Rose) follow in that style. For MY XPERIENCE, he also includes colorful covers (Michael Sembello's "Maniac," featuring Richie Stephens) and draws from the moral underpinnings of roots reggae ("The Lord is my Light & Salvation," "Seek God"). Reid also appears with hip-hop madman Busta Rhymes on the beat-heavy "Believe it or Not," a track that is surpassed only by Bounty Killer's monumental "Revolution III," which features Beenie Man and reggae legend Dennis Brown. Here'S The Deal
Liquid Soul: Mars Williams (sopranino, soprano, alto & tenor saxophones, wood flute, toys); Simone, Dirty MF, Brian "MCB" Quarles (vocals); Ron Haynes (trumpet); John Janowiak (trombone); Chris "Hambone" Cameron (keyboards); Tom Sanchez (guitar); Rick Showalter (bass); Dan Leali (drums); Newt Cole (percussion); DJ Ajax (turntables). Recorded at Rax Trax & Studiochicago, Chicago, Illinois. HERE'S THE DEAL was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Funk is a dish best served live, and although Liquid Soul's third album HERE'S THE DEAL is a mix of concert performances and studio cuts, the irresistible grooves conjured up bythis Chicago collective remain a constant throughout. Led by saxophonist Mars Williams, Liquid Soul work from a funk base augmented by plenty of jazz, hip-hop, and rock. Rapper MCB rides a rambunctious rhythm throughout "Sure Fire One," while Nina Simone's daughter Simone adds sultry vocals to the erotic slow jam "Dysfunction," and the brassy, scratch-laden "Stop By Monie's." Other studio cuts worth mentioning are the blaxploitation-flavored "Sex Tablet," and the quirky swing of "Rocket Scientist," guided by Tony Sanchez's fluid rhythm guitar playing. The live cuts find Liquid Soul raising the bar considerably, as they unleash a furious Caribbean-infused rhythmic attack on the Dizzy Gillespie tribute "The Diz" and give Miles Davis' "All Blues" a booty-shaking makeover. Elsewhere, atonal chords spice up the dark grooves of "Donkey Punch," while the chicken-scratch guitar and locomotive bass lines of "Spam Sucker" turn it into a theme for an imaginary '70s cop show. Cobra And Phases Group Play Voltage In The Milky Night
Full title: Cobra & Phases Group Play Voltage In The Milky Night. Stereolab includes: Laetitia Sadier (vocals); Tim Gane (guitar). After an ear-pricking opening ("Fuses") peppered with hints of Art Ensemble of Chicago-like percussive free jazz, it's business as usual for Stereolab. For 1997's DOTS AND LOOPS, the group took cues from Mouse on Mars and Tortoise and assembled its distinctive synth whooshes and intricate but perfectly polished pop via hard-disc. COBRA brings performance back into play, with post-production duties split between High Llamas maestro Sean O'Hagan and Chicago avant-garde poster boys Jim O'Rourke and John McEntire. Stereolab makes their job easy by providing some of its most ambitious, sophisticated, yet unfailingly poppy compositions yet. A few more shockers in line with "Fuses" would have been welcome, but myriad small surprises and instantly addictive melodies substitute for the usual more startling changes in direction. "Italian Shoes/Continuum" stirs up Stereolab's space age Moog-music to a Euro prog-rock frenzy. The vibe-alicious "The Free Design" pays tribute to the baroque choral-pop of the lost '70s legends. On such marathon excursions as "Blue Milk" and "Caleidoscopic Gaze," Stereolab packs ideas--not to mention funky analog workouts, subtle breakbeats, and chiming guitars--into every turn. Throughout, wall-to-wall counterpoint harmonies, Sadier/Gane's classy Continental songcraft, punchy horns, and O'Rourke's slightly woozy string arrangements make for an endlessly enchanting 75 minutes. Sweetnighter
Weather Report includes: Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Miroslav Vitous, Dom Um Romao, Eric Gravatt, Maruga, Andrew White III, Herschel Dwellingham. Includes liner notes by John Ephland. Weather Report's third album is a clearly defined move into Latin and Brazilian motifs, wah-wah guitar, andsynthesizer funk. Mainmen Zawinul and Shorter recruited new percussionists for SWEETNIGHTER, whose well-traveled talents helped to augment the band's already beefy sound. Compositionally, Weather Report was never tighter. There's a tense wait for the suppressed funk of "Boogie Woogie Waltz" to finally take off, but when it does, with Vitous' bass a fault line of deep groove, Zawinul's electronics mapping out the terrain, and Shorter's sax spewing torrents of hellfire, the release is breathtaking. The climax here is an ecstatic rush of blitzkrieg re-bop. "125th Street Congress" could be Miles Davis' ON THE CORNER part two, sly funk smeared across the greasy keys of Zawinul's synthesizers and Shorter's horns. Go gentle into this SWEETNIGHTER--you won't want to come down when it's all over. SKU: 1011428

They Were Wrong So We Drowned [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Liars: Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill, Julian Gross. The 2002 full-length debut of Brooklyn's Liars was one of the rallying cries of the punk-funk/post-punk revival, where the stylings of Gang of Four, A Certain Ratio, Pop Group, et al, fed the fires of a new generationalso including the Rapture, Radio 4, Moving Units, and others. Concerned about pigeonholing, the Liars subsequently did a rapid about-face, jettisoning their rhythm section, adding Julian Gross to the lineup, and dropping the dance-rock sound. In the place of their old format, the band dives headfirst into an experimental approach full of dizzying effects and often-harsh electronics that dance around unconventional song structures. To mix things up even further, THEY WERE WRONG, SO WE DROWNED is in fact a concept album about the myth of the German Witches of Brocken (hence the weird, spooky lyrics throughout). Challenging both themselves and their audience with a bracing brand of what might be described as avant-garde art-rock, the Liars up the ante with panache on their second album. SKU: 6549484

Paris 1919
Personnel includes: John Cale (vocals, piano); Lowell George (guitar); Wilton Felder (bass); Richie Hayward (drums); UCLA Student Orchestra. Recorded at Sunwest Studios, Los Angeles, California. PARIS 1919 is considered by many critics (and Cale fans) to be his best. Released in 1973, 1919 was recorded in Los Angeles with members of Little Feat, Wilton Felder and the UCLA Orchestra, and stands as one of the best "rock/classical" fusions, mainly because Cale (who is a classically-trained musician) avoids the heavy-handed pomp and pretensions that besiege so much "art-rock." He also manages to maintain the qualities of tunefulness and whimsy. His lyrics are absurdist/Dadaist-style poetry and word play, sung in a plaintive, unaffected, almost choirboy style. The songs have a longing, haunted feel to them-"Half Past France" is a perfect distillation of the musings that often accompany late-night travel. Throughout, the usual rock instrumentation is colored andcaressed by exquisite pedal steel guitar, French horn, harmonium and strings. Cale remembers to rock out, too: "Macbeth" is a dense, driving, Move-styled take on the Shakespeare play, complete with raving, keening slide guitar and thundering drums. PARIS 1919 stands as one of the "lost" classic rock albums of the 1970s. SKU: 1010002

Concert Sinatra, The
Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle (conductor, arranger). Includes liner notes by Lawrence D. Stewart. Digitally remastered by Lee Hershberg. Recorded in 1963 between the ultra-swinging SINATRA-BASIE and SINATRA'S SINATRA, THE CONCERT SINATRA is a short, richly musical set of classic theatre songs, some of which ("Ol' Man River," the "Soliloquy" from CAROUSEL, "Bewitched" from PAL JOEY ) were milestones in Sinatra's earlier career. Here arranger Nelson Riddle is allowed to work with a large symphony orchestra and the results once more are a textbook example of fine orchestration. The formal settings do not prevent Riddle from handling this potentially "heavy" material with his characteristically deft touch. For instance, Sinatra/Riddle's sure reading of the epic "Ol' Man River" is far superior tothe over-the-top Alex Stordahl-arranged '40s version. Sinatra is in fine voice throughout; no evidence here of the increasingly rough delivery which came to characterize his '60s output. The classiest of the Reprise albums. SKU: 1009425

Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus
Personnel: Charles Mingus (piano, bass); Jerome Richardson (soprano & baritone saxophones); Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, flute); Charles Mariano (alto saxophone); Dick Hafer (tenor saxophone, flute); Booker Ervin (tenor saxophone); Eddie Preston, Richard Williams, Rolf Ericson (trumpets); Britt Woodman, Quentin Jackson (trombones); Don Butterfield (tuba); Jaki Byard (piano); Jay Berliner (guitar); Walter Perkins, Dannie Richmond (drums). Recorded January 20 and September 20, 1963. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson. For bassist/composer Charles Mingus, many of the leading edge trends of the late '50s-early '60s did not significantly alter his musical outlook--an outlook he had been nurturing since the 1940s when he first made his mark as Baron Mingus. "Mingus, The Composer" was Charlie Parker's affectionate commission forthe Californian bassist, who first made waves with "Mingus Fingers" for Lionel Hampton's big band in 1948. As a result, when Miles came along with fresh notions of modality, Mingus could point to his own decade-long work with pedal point. Likewise, when Ornette Coleman introduced his free form, non-chordal approach to blues and modern jazz, Mingus responded with his legendary Booker Ervin/Eric Dolphy/Ted Curson/Dannie Richmond ensemble (MINGUS AT ANTIBES), extending on ideas he'd been developing for years ("Pithecanthropus Erectus"). Part of what makes MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS such a rich, enduring, listening experience is in the way it delineates the major themes and streams in Mingus' writing, and all of his idiomatic gestures and tonal colors. The rough-hewn polyphony of "II B.S." (a kissing cousin of "Haitian Fight Song") is driven along by the composer's indomitable, thrusting bass line, reflecting the experience of early New Orleans ensembles. Multiple voices syncopate to create a rich melodic fabric and ferocious rhythmic intensity, spotlighting the sanctified tenor voice of Booker Ervin. On his own "I X Love" and a brilliant cover of Ellington's "Mood Indigo," Mingus displays a genius for film noir textures and elaborate timbral contrasts worthy of the Duke. "Celia" also begins with Ellingtonian plumage, but in its use of contrasting tempos and wildly divergent reed and brass voicings (from tuba and baritone sax on up to flutes and oboes) Mingus zeroes in on his own particular brand of emotional turbulence. In a corresponding mode, there's his rocking arrangement of "Better Get Hit In Yo' Soul," with its fleet 6/8 pulse, old time hosannas and the roaring commentary of an unruly congregation. Equally famous is Mingus' tender portrayal of Lester Young on "Goodbye Porkpie Hat," with its piping reeds, moaning brass and signature Ervin solo. Mingus announces "Hora Decubitus" with some resounding double-stops, before launching into a fierce display of swing and ensemble interplay, culminating in some Eric Dolphy fireworks. And in a remarkable coda to the original SKU: 1019712

Mirrors
Personnel: Joe Chambers (vibraphone, drums); Vincent Herring (soprano, alto & tenor saxophones); Eddie Henderson (trumpet); Mulgrew Miller (piano); Ira Coleman (bass). Recorded at SoundOn Sound, New York, New York on July 7 & 8, 1998. Includes liner notes by Michael Cuscuna. After a too-long absence on the recording scene, drummer/composer Joe Chambers returned with MIRRORS. Chambers contributed his fine drumming and compositions to many '60s Blue Note jazz classics (especially with Bobby Hutcherson) and made some excellent albums as a leader (for the Muse label) that have stood the test of time. On MIRRORS, Chambers assembles a mix of veterans and younger players for a nearly flawless set that recalls the classic Blue Note sound of the mid-'60s, without coming off as a nostalgic knock-off. The playing is crisp, inspired, restrained and bright (especially Eddie Henderson's) and the tunes are varied and memorable. Though the music has its roots in '60s jazz, MIRRORS is not limited by its sense of tradition, nor does it ignore everything that has happened since. It's down-to-earth yet thoughtful mainstream jazz of the highest order. SKU: 5072261

Afro Celt Sound System Vol.2 (Release)
Afro Celt Sound System: N'Faly Kouyate (vocals, kora, balafon); Larla O Lionaird (vocals); Simon Emmerson (guitar, keyboards, programming); James McNally (accordion, keyboards, whistle, bodhran); Myrdhin (Celtic harp); Martin Russell (keyboards, programming); Moussa Sissokho (talking drum, djembe). Additional personnel: Sinead O'Connor, Ashley Maher (vocals); Ronan Browne, Michael McGoldrick (Uilleann pipes); Nigel Eaton (hurdy gurdy); Youth (bass); Johnny Kalsi (dhol drums); Ron Aslan (programming). Recorded at Sonic Innovation, London, England. VOLUME 2: RELEASE was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. Afro Celt Sound System started as a fairly nebulous, if noble, idea--bring together anassortment of European and African musicians and hope to come up with a result greater than the sum of the project's parts. The idea paid off, and the progress of the band may be measured by its confidence in moving well beyond its initial premise. With its second album, RELEASE, the group coalesces around the talents of seven Irish and African performers and more prominent dance beats. Sinead O'Connor provides a haunting vocal element on the title track, while "Even in My Dreams" sets an angelic harp against an initial trip-hop sequence. SKU: 1000381

Best Of George Harrison, The
Personnel includes: George Harrison, John Lennon (vocals, guitar); Paul McCartney (vocals, bass); Eric Clapton (guitar); Billy Preston (keyboards); Ringo Starr (drums). Producers: George Harrison, George Martin, Phil Spector. As evidenced on THE BEST OF GEORGE HARRISON, the Quiet Beatle did well in his little corner of Fab Fourdom despite being in the considerable shadow of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The first seven songs on this collection point to Harrison's substantial contributions to the band, with "Taxman," "Here Comes The Sun" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" being some of the more notable Harrison compositions. "Something" was the only song Harrison wrote for the Beatles that became a hit and ended up being covered by a number of artists including Frank Sinatra (who mistakenly credited it to Lennon/McCartney). Having been one of the first rock musicians to experiment with and embrace Easternculture invariably bore a heavy influence on Harrison's music, most notably on his early solo work. "My Sweet Lord" and "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)" with their messages of spiritual tranquility both topped the charts while "What Is Life" landed in the top 10. Harrison's commitment to the East resulted in a pair of 1972 charity concerts at Madison Square Garden for the people of Bangladesh from which the single "Bangla-Desh" peaked at 23 and earned more money for this personal crusade. Shrek
Original score composed by Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell. SHREK was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For A Motion Picture, TelevisionOr Other Visual Media. Much like music, cartoons are a universal medium that appeals to kids of all ages. With that concept in mind, Dreamworks has cobbled together a broad range of pop for the soundtrack to the computer-animated fairytale SHREK. Smashmouth checks in twice with the 1999 hit "All Star" and a dub-flavored cover of The Monkees' "I'm A Believer." Guilty pleasures abound, whether it's Leslie Carter (sister of Aaron and Backstreeter Nick) and her use of percolating beats and scratches on the cotton-candy "Like Wow!" or the Baha Men blowing away their potential one-hit wonder status with the infectious party chant "Best Years Of Our Lives." The scale also slides to the sophisticated side of the spectrum as evidenced by Rufus Wainwright's gorgeous rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and E's quirky "My Beloved Monster." Other highlights include Halfcocked's pogo-worthy version of Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation" and The Proclaimers' jaunty late-'80s nugget "I'm On My Way." SHREK proves cartoons and music are two pleasures you never get too old to enjoy. SKU: 1062026

Normal For Bridgwater
Personnel: Peter Bruntnell (vocals, guitar, banjo); James Walbourne (guitar, banjo, Hammond B-3 organ, background vocals); GeorgeHoward (guitar, banjo, mandolin); Eric Heywood (pedal steel guitar); Tim Obetz (dobro); Dave Boquist (fiddle); Peter Linnane (piano); Peter Noone (bass, shaker, background vocals); Michael Clews (drums, tambourine); Betsy Nichols (background vocals). Recorded at Zippah Studios, Brookline, Massachusetts. This is the third release by British singer-songwriter Peter Bruntnell. The album's title makes reference to the English town of Bridgwater, in Somerset, also known as the cider-drinking capitol of the country. A local doctor reportedly would list his patients as "normal for Bridgwater" in their medical histories. The core quartet is a rough-and-tumble outfit that perfectly fits Bruntnell's songs. They're joined by a range of guests, adding dobro, pedal steel, fiddle and a few other flourishes. The music is brethren to the alt-country music scene, sharing a reverence for such key forebears as Gram Parsons. The songs are beautifully crafted, with the gorgeous and evocative "N.F.B." being the title song of sorts. Bruntnell's voice is gentle, yet can be forceful when needed. Background vocals add lushness when appropriate, and producer George Howard succeeded in creating a warm atmosphere throughout. SKU: 3100234

Mulligan & Baker - Carnegie Hall Concert Vol.1 & 2
CARNEGIE HALL CONCERT is a compilation of material from the original CTI releases: "Carnegie Hall Concerts, Volume 1 & 2". Personnel includes: Chet Baker (trumpet); Gerry Mulligan (saxophone); Dave Samuels (vibraphone); Bob James (keyboards); John Scofield (guitar); Ron Carter (bass); Harvey Mason (drums). This 1974 release finds Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker together in a live setting. The two jazz paragons hadn't worked together in 10 years, but from the first downbeat it's evident that they still possess the musicalrapport they'd developed as young men. Taking the West Coast by storm 22 years earlier with their famed pianoless quartet, Mulligan and Baker had the keen ability to work almost as one performer. This is clearly evident on "Bernie's Tune," where they trade licks on the tune's bridge in articulate, fluid gestures, almost as one player. Despite their substance abuse, Baker and Mulligan grew as improvisers over many years performing on concert stages and in jazz clubs. This album is testament to their ability to adapt and embrace modern jazz stylings. When they hark back to their roots on compositions such as "My Funny Valentine" and "Line For Lyons," they play with a kind of casual, relaxed swing indicative of the '50s cool jazz feel they helped create. Wet From Birth
The pale young men from Omaha, Nebraska known as the Faint have always been more than happy to revive the 1980s, an era when MTV showed actual music videos, for songs full of synthesizer dance beats. WET FROM BIRTH brings in heavier-than-usual punk/goth vibrations, as if Trent Reznor suddenly started playing keys for Depeche Mode. The lyrics have also evolved from previous sex-obsessed notions to deep, disturbing ruminations, made all the odder by their dance-floor-ready frameworks. The rude-boy-style jump-up "I Disappear" opens with Joel Petersen's bass line sounding so wonderfully distorted you worry his amp won't make it halfway through the first chorus, as vocalist Todd Baechle laments about the crippling nature of self-consciousness. "Dropkick the Pinks" takes a dive into the basement for '80s punk, with little sister's Duran Duran album still audible from upstairs. Deliciously dated anthemic guitar riffs enliven "Birth," wherein Todd sings his sticky, pain-wracked remembrances of exiting the womb, as brother Clark bashes the drums. Each song jumps around between retro-rock,dark New Wave, electroclash, and emo-punk, all the while staying more or less danceable, further proof there must be something weird in the Omaha water (Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst was once a Faint member).
