Sailing The Seas Of Cheese
Primus: Les Claypool (vocals, bass); Larry "Ler" LaLonde (guitar); Tim "Herb" Alexander (drums). Additional personnel: Tom Waits (vocals); Mike Bordin, Butt House. Primus' major label debut (and third release overall), 1991's SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE had a long chart life, eventually being Primus' first release to go gold and break the band to a wider audience. Basssist/singer Les Claypool's bizarre sense of humor runs rampant through out--igniting such tracks as the stomping "Here Come the Bastards," the "Full Metal Jacket"-esque "Sgt. Baker," the explosive "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver," and the long and winding "Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers." Also featured was a new version of "Tommy the Cat," featuring Tom Waits on vocals. Regrettably, SAILING THESEAS OF CHEESE was Primus' last truly classic release. SKU: 5070542

Robert Johnson Songbook/Hot Foot Powder
Peter Green Splinter Group: Peter Green (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Nigel Watson (vocals, guitar); Roger Cotton (guitar, piano); Brian Bull (guitar); Pete Stroud (acoustic bass guitar); Larry Tolfree (drums). Additional personnel: Honeyboy Edwards, Hubert Sumlin, Joe Louis Walker, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy (guitar); Dr. John (piano). Producers: Roger Cotton; Peter Green; Nigel Watson. Recording information: Roundel Studio, Kent, England. Robert Johnson, revered by many as the greatest of bluesmen, gets a second makeover here by Peter Green, rightly considered one of the best blues guitar players ever and, like Johnson, at one time or another shrouded in his fair share of mystery and speculation. Together with a clutch of veteran blues musicians, Green,Nigel Watson and the Splinter Group pay 13 loving tributes to Delta bluesman Johnson whose compositions have graced the repertoire of rock and blues bands ever since Clapton first tried to flag a ride down at the crossroads in 1968. Green takes most of the vocals with Watson singing lead on just four tracks including the frantic "Preachin' Blues" and the doom-laden "Hellhound On My Trail" (once recorded in 1968 by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac). Dr. John helps out on "From Four Until Late" with some trademark barrelhouse piano. That's him too swinging behind a foot-tapping version of "They're Red Hot." A worthy follow-up to the much acclaimed ROBERT JOHNSON SONGBOOK, HOT FOOT POWDER (incidentally a voodoo spell ingredient mentioned in "Hellhound ") shows the Splinter Group paying another sincere tribute to one of the most influential blues artists of all time SKU: 1086334

Albemarle Sound, The
The Ladybug Transistor: Gary Olson, Jeffrey Rush Baron, Jennifer Baron, Sasha Bell, San Fadyl, Mike Barrett. Additional personnel: Claudia Chopek (violin); Michell Schifferele-Marzulli (cello); Paula Henderson (baritone saxophone); Joe Ben Plummer (saxophone). By borrowing from the classic conceptual pop albums of the late sixties for their latest offering, Brooklyn's Ladybug Transistor have ended up crafting a late-20th century gem that will most certainly be remembered as one of 1999's most outstanding releases. With housemate Bill Wells helping out behind the boards, the backing tracks of THE ALBERMARLE SOUND could easily be mistaken for lost PETSOUNDS instrumentals. The variety of instruments, all utilized in a contained, precise manner, are so perfectly chosen that it's easy let the sounds slip past without truly appreciating each song's construction. Horns, strings, and Jeffrey Baron's wide-ranging guitar work combine to create a lush, sprawling background for singer Gary Olson's double-layered, crooning vocals. The real star of this disc, however, is Sasha Bell, whose piano and keyboard work (not to mention harmonies) shifts with each tempo change and elevates the album to a new plateau. Not a conceptual record in the literal sense, the abundant lyrical references to various forms of water keeps the album loosely unified with a vocabulary of images. The result of this imagery, when combined with the soothing melodies and timeless production value, is an uplifting, hopeful record appropriate for any mood. SKU: 1072630

This Is Hip (The Best Of John Lee Hooker)
This compilation features John Lee Hooker's influential recordings for the Vee Jay label. Personnel includes: John Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar); Eddie Taylor, Lefty Bates (guitar); Hank Crosby (tenor saxophone); George Washington, Everett McCrary (bass); Tom Whitehead, Richard Johnson, Earl Phillips, Jimmy Turner (drums). Recorded in Chicago, Illinois between 1955 and 1964. Includes liner notes by John Collis. This disc features some of Hooker's finest material from the late '50s and early '60s, recorded for Chicago's VeeJay label. The VeeJay execs tried to get Hooker to appeal to the burgeoning rock & roll audience by putting him in the studio with a hard-hitting electric band. The results are a million miles from the alienating gloss that marred Hooker's '80s and '90s crossover efforts. The musicians enhance the raw, primal quality of Hooker's blues. Consequently, these sessions feature some of Hooker's most enduring tunes, like "Maudie" and "Dimples." While Hooker's solo works are probably his most transcendent, this disc offers some of his finest band recordings. SKU: 4124661

Innocents, The
Erasure: Andy Bell (vocals); Vince Clarke (various instruments). The Kickhorns: Roddy Lorimer, Tim Sanders, Simon Clark, Steve Sidwell (brass). Additional personnel: Caron Wheeler, Naomi Osborne, Jane Ayre (background vocals). Producers: Stephen Hague, Dave Jacob, Erasure. Erasure's third album, 1988's THE INNOCENTS, features the US breakthrough hits "A Little Respect," and "Chains of Love," and is a welcome departure for the duo. With this release, Vince Clarkeand Andy Bell move away from the strictly-synthesized Hi-NRG dance-pop of their earlier albums, adding horns and gospel-tinged backing vocals for a more soulful, organic sound, while maintaining the disco vitality of earlier albums like WONDERLAND or THE CIRCUS. Bell's lyrics are more overt in their social commentary, as on "Phantom Bride" and "A Little Respect," and he pointedly leaves the original gender references intact in the CD-only cover of Tina Turner's classic "River Deep, Mountain High." However, the duo is still capable of camp silliness like "Sixty-Five Thousand" and "Yahoo!" giving the album a balanced sensibility. THE INNOCENTS ranks with 1989's WILD! and 1994's I SAY I SAY I SAY as one of Erasure's best albums. SKU: 1031729

Animal House [PA]
Personnel includes: Angie Martinez, Lil' Mo, Sacario, N.O.R.E., Missy Elliot, Tony Sunshine, Petey Pablo, Keon Bryce. Producers include: Buckwild, Dirty Swift, Cool & Dre, Salaam "The Chameleon", Ant Boogie. Think of Angie Martinez as the hip-hop Laura Cantrell, an influential DJ so deeply entrenched in her chosen scene that she decided to jump to the other side of the fence, becoming a highly regarded recording artist. When the hostof New York's Hot 97 debuted in 2001 with UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL, it was plain that she had something of her own to offer to the hip-hop world. Like its predecessor, ANIMAL HOUSE features a bevy of Martinez's famous friends, but her own voice and style are front and center throughout. Martinez's no-nonsense rhyming is ably supported by constantly surprising and inventive production, as on the emphasis track "If I Could Go," which mixes a Latin-inflected guitar line with synths that resemble nothing so much as the Microsoft e-mail alert tones. Fat Joe, Kelis, and others add their personal touches to the album, but it's Martinez who shines the brightest here. SKU: 1074496

Swing Low Sweet Cadillac
Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet); James Moody (alto & tenor saxophones, flute); Mike Longo (piano); Frank Schifano (electric bass); Candy Finch (drums). Producer: Bob Thiele. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded live at Memory Lane, Los Angeles, California on May 25 & 26, 1967. Originally released on Impulse! (9149). Includes liner notes by George Hoefer. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios). SWING LOW, SWEET CADILLAC is one of the most popular and enduring of Dizzy Gillespie's many recordings, a live session from 1967 with his working band of the moment, featuring the great James Moody on both alto and tenor saxophones, as well as flute. By 1967 Dizzy had added a keyboardist with a Fender Rhodes electric piano, and a Fender bass to his rhythm section. Frank Schifano's vamping ostinatos on the extended blowing of "Kush" lend an Afro-Cuban funk feeling to the groove, pointing out just how much contemporary jazzand R&B owes to Gillespie's Latin breakthroughs of the '40s. Of course for all the surface similarities, rock and funk bands of that time weren't employing such complex harmonic devices. In addition, there's another rollicking Latin excursion on "Mas Que Nada (Pow, Pow, Pow)," the sweet shuffling blues "Bye," and a curiously refreshing ballad, "Something In Your Smile" (from the movie "Doctor Doolittle"). But the title tune is the centerpiece, with its Chano Pozo-like opening chants, its humorous take off on the call-and-response of the old spirituals, and a righteous boogaloo backbeat to fire up the trumpet-tenor exchanges. It is precisely this balance between good-natured fun and fiery, uncompromising musical intelligence that makes SWING LOW, SWEET CADILLAC such a classic. SKU: 1019311

Joy Of A Toy [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Kevin Ayers (vocals); Paul Buckmaster (cello); Paul Minns (oboe); David Bedford (piano); Mike Ratledge (keyboards); Hugh Hopper, Jeff Clyne (bass); Robert Wyatt, Rob Tait (drums); Jean, Mary, Cyrille Ayers, Sean Murphy (background vocals). Ayers left the Soft Machine for a solo career when his basic pop leanings appeared at odds with theintense jazz/rock of his former colleagues. This album was a cult favourite at the end of the 60s for no reason other than that Ayers was well liked because he was ever so slightly mad. Take a look and listen at the content of this album: 'Song For Insane Times', 'Eleanor's Cake (Which Ate Her)' and 'Stop This Train (Again Doing It)'. Through the haze of quirkiness there is a strong light melodic feel to much of the music, and Ayers did possess a heartbreaker voice that prompted one woman to state, 'he is the sexiest man in the world'. Soul Mining [Remastered]
The The: Matt Johnson (vocals, keyboards, percussion, loops); Anne Stephenson (violin); Martin McCarrick (cello); Paul Boyle (fiddle); Jools Holland (piano); Jools Holland (piano); Thomas Leer (synthesizer); Jeremy Meek, Camelle G. Hinds (bass); Andy Duncan, Zeke Manyika (drums); Jim Thirlwell (sticks & tins). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Three years after his debut album (BURNING BLUE SOUL released in 1981), Matt Johnson resurrected the name The The, under which he had recorded an early single called "Controversial Subject," and unleashed SOUL MINING on the world. This was a far more polished affair than its predecessor, and also a more powerful statement of purpose. Johnson's mission is to explore the seedier underbelly of his own psyche, which is "crippled by guilt and blinded by sense" (according to the album's opening track). Elsewhere, he addresses everything that is wrong with society, from consumerism to easy morality, but never repetitively and always with a slinky hook (often provided by the bass guitar). Highlights include "Uncertain Smile," featuring a subtle string section and a prominent, barreling piano, the album's title track, with an eerie guitar line and pulsing xylophone, and all nine-and-a-half minutes of the disturbingly funky "Giant." The best track, however, is "This Is the Day," adeceptively cheerful sounding song, complete with accordion, that takes a lyric like "this is the day your life will surely change" and makes the listener aware that these changes are unlikely to be good ones. Joan Baez Vol.1 [Remastered]
The 2001 remastered edition of Joan Baez's first LP features bonus tracks and new cover art as well as a replica of the original cover and liner notes. Personnel: Joan Baez (vocals, guitar); Fred Hellerman (guitar). Producer: Maynard Solomon. Reissue producer: Mark Spector. Originally released on Vanguard (9078). Includes original liner notes by Maynard Solomon and reissue liner notes by Arthur Levy. Digitally remastered by Jeff Zaraya. This is part of Vanguard's Original Master series. In retrospect, Joan Baez's 1960 debut doesn't sound like the work of a person who would go on to be proclaimed the queen of folk music, but on the other hand, Bob Dylan's first album doesn't sound like he'd be named the king, either. A plainly-produced, live-sounding voice and guitar album--Fred Hellerman plays second guitar on a handful of tracks--featuring a repertoire of traditional folk songs, VOLUME 1 doesn't sound that different from the debuts of Carolyn Hester, Judy Collins or any number of other female folk singers who first gained prominence around this time. (In fact, Baez's less famous sister Mimi Farina clearly has the better voice of the two.) However, VOLUME 1 is a fine example of traditional folk as it was presented in the coffeehouses of Cambridge and Greenwich Village in the late '50sand early '60s. SKU: 1069143

Personnel: Archer Prewitt (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, mellotron, percussion); Nora O'Connor, Kelly Hogan (vocals); Ben Utley, Matt Clark, Ted Cho (guitar); Susan Voelz (violin); Alison Chesley (cello); Paul Mertens (flute, bass harmonica, saxophone); Dave Max Crawford (piano, organ, synthesizer, harpischord, brass); Mark Greenberg (bass, stylophone, vibraphone); Noel Kupersmith (upright bass); Steve Goulding, Chris Manfrin(drums). Recorded at The King Size Sound Laboratories and Mayfair Recording, Chicago, Illinois. Due to Archer Prewitt's membership in the Sea and Cake, one might be tempted to consign him to the experimental/avant pigeonhole of post-rock, but nothing could be further from the truth. Turns out Prewitt's a dyed-in-the-wool popster, and he's never shown it more than on THREE. Lush, layered production wafts in on clouds of floating keyboards and succulent strings, with a quiet elegance that would make Eric Matthews (remember him?) grimace with jealousy. Sure, there are more rocking moments, as on the churning guitar intro of "Tear Me All Away," but much of THREE finds Prewitt channeling his inner Brian Wilson to delightfully sunny effect. It doesn't hurt that he's got the cream of the Chicago indie vanguard (Kelly Hogan, Steve Goulding, etc.) helping him out, but in the end you've got to hand it to Prewitt for his pure pop songwriting and sparkling sonic vision. Jazz Profile
Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Sahib Shihab, Lou Donaldson, Danny Quebec West (alto saxophone); Lucky Thompson, John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Kenny Dorham, Idrees Sulieman, George Taitt (trumpet); Al McKibbon,Nelson Boyd, Ahmed Abdul-Malik, Gene Ramey, Bob Paige (bass); Art Blakey, Max Roach, Roy Haynes (drums). Compilation producer: John Ephland. Engineers include: Doug Hawkins, Juanita (Naima) Coltrane. Recorded between 1947 and 1958. Includes liner notes by John Ephland. This is part of Blue Note's Jazz Profile series. Pianist Thelonious Sphere Monk brought a unique rhythmic and compositional sensibility to jazz, bridging the bop revolution of the late '40s and the free jazz experiments of Albert Ayler and others in the '60s. Where Ellington was absorbing the influence of classical music, Monk seemed to be fonder of dissonant 20th century European composers. This excellent, chronologically sequenced 15-track compilation of Monk's late-'40s and -'50s work for Blue Note Records focuses on Monk's small group settings, where he's most often in the company of legendary bop drummer Art Blakey and bassist Gene Ramsey. The collection's highlights include two tracks from a legendary date at the Five Spot Cafe with John Coltrane as part of Monk's quartet, "Crepuscule With Nellie" and Monk's signature piece, "Epistrophy." These performances, like this entire collection, are essential. SKU: 1077164

Forest, The
THE FOREST is an orchestral recording in 10 parts. Personnel includes: David Byrne, Geno Lechner, Linda Harmon, Randy Crenshaw, Scottie Haskell, William New, Bobbie Page (vocals); Hitoshi Ishikaba, Sid Sharp, Sid Page, Susann Widmer, Marcus Honegger, James Getzoff, Sam Boghossian, Dan Neufield (violin); Paul Fenton, Dorle Sommer, Robert Becker (viola); Helmut Menzler, David Shamban, Larry Corbett (cello); Robert Zollitsch (zither); Camilla Hoitenga, Miriam Sosewitz (flute); Don Markese (clarinet, bass clarinet); John Clarke (oboe); Jimmie Haskell (accordion); Freider Steinle, Stuart Blumberg (trumpet);Samuel Thiel, Steve Durnin (French horn); Christian Pitius (piano, organ, celesta); Ursula Meyer, Alan Broadbent (piano); Johannes Beer, Alan Estes, Bernie Dresel (percussion). Engineers: Andy Waterman, Mark Wolfson, Edu Meyer. Recorded at Entourage Studios, North Hollywood, California and Hansa Tonstudios, Berlin, Germany. An unexpected--and to many at the time, off-putting--sidestep from the Brazilian music which had entranced David Byrne for close to a half-decade, 1991's THE FOREST sounds rather like a bid to be seen as a serious composer. Based on the Sumerian epic of Gilgamesh, the earliest known narrative story, THE FOREST is a foray into 19th century Romanticism. Less a symphony than a tone poem, complete with occasional vocal passages from Byrne and others, THE FOREST combines traditional orchestral arrangements with such relatively odd (for classical-style music) instruments as accordion and zither. Listened to free of the preconceptions aroused by Byrne's other work, THE FOREST is an interesting and occasionally lovely experiment. SKU: 1070659

Fast And The Furious Vol.1, The
THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS is a film about L.A. street gangs who use souped-up hot rod races as a means of settling their rivalry. Accordingly, the movie's soundtrack is full of contemporary urban music that accurately reflects the relentless action and quick pace that define the film. Ja Rule, who even makes a brief onscreen appearance, offers "The Furious," which utilizes his trademark raw, gritty rapping style to good effect. No less esteemed a figure than Faith Evans drops in with the funky, melodic, pop-friendly "The Good Life." Along the way, everyone from R&B star R. Kelly to hard-hitting rapper Scarface drops into add their signature sound to this soundtrack, which stands up as fine hip-hop/R&B album regardless of its connection to the film. SKU: 7914099

Chariots Of Fire (Original Soundtrack) [Remastered]
Original score composed and performed by Vangelis. Recorded at Nemo Studios, London, England. While onlyserious film buffs are likely to recall Hugh Hudson's role as the director of the Oscar-winning CHARIOTS OF FIRE, the Greek composer Vangelis became, and remained, a household name with his soundtrack for the 1981 film. At the time, the theme song was parodied as being excessively saccharin. Indeed, with titles such as "Five Rings" and "100 Metres," the album wears its Olympian heart on its sleeve. Nonetheless, CHARIOTS OF FIRE is often a brooding work, and if the prevailing memory of this album is one of slow-motion runners and heady triumph, Vangelis's synthesizer work often conveys a sense of isolation and lost glory.
