The young R&B thrush Ashanti makes an impressive showing on her self-titled debut album. Unlike manyof her peers, Ashanti doesn't resort to vocal histrionics; this siren is more concerned with communicating the emotion of a song than showing off her chops. In fact, the reigning mood on this disc is a gauzy, slow-burn feel that makes the most of Ashanti's sensual, low-key style. Often she seems to be whispering right into your ear. Though there's an undercurrent of hip-hop-influenced production, that simmering, late-night feel remains consistent through the torch ballad "Foolish" (when will these spurned lovers learn?), the considerably less tortured "Happy," and the irresistible come-on of "Movies." Perhaps most telling of all, however, is the closing track "Thank You," which affords us the opportunity to hear Ashanti sing unaccompanied, revealing in plain sight the considerable pipes whose strength she tastefully downplays to fine effect throughout ASHANTI.

Named after Hawkins' 1939 proto-bebop classic, this legendary collection proves why Hawkins is considered by many the finest tenor ever. Picking up his career after a stint alongside Louis Armstrong in Fletcher Henderson's big band and five years in prewar Europe, BODY AND SOUL focuses on Hawkins' essential small group sides of the '40s. Here the former swing enthusiast helped create bebop with the helpof future jazz icons Benny Carter, J.J. Johnson, Zoot Sims and Max Roach. From "Meet Doctor Foo" to "Angel Face," Hawkins transforms standards like "My Blue Heaven" into something startlingly new and creates originals like "Bouncing With Bean" that would go on to influenced an entire generation of players. The mid-'50s orchestral sessions that end the album show Hawkins' eagerness to bring bebop's structures into new arenas, and the lovely, string-laden remake of the title track indicates that the experiment was a success.

The risk that Phil Collins took in displaying painful lyrics at an obviously harrowing time could have been taken as self-indulgence, but 18 years on this album is still seen as his best andmost assured. The Genesis drummer displayed dynamic arrangements ('In The Air Tonight'), melancholy piano ('You Know What I Mean') and Philadelphia soul ('I Missed Again'), and wrapped up with a cover of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' at which even John Lennon would have tipped his hat. After this album Collins embarked on an extraordinarily busy career that included a rejuvenated Genesis, film roles and huge solo success. This will always be the album closest to his heart, with the paint pot on the piano.

During the writing and shooting of Jim Jarmusch's DEAD MAN, a surreal spiritual journey through the old West starring Johnny Depp, he listened continually to the music of Neil Young, dreaming of tapping the artist to provide the film's soundtrack. Fate smiled on Jarmusch (and the rest of us) when Young agreed. Performing solo, Young recorded a series of moody, introspective instrumental pieces for the film, centered mostly around his distinctive electric guitar sound, but also utilizing pump organ and piano. The music evokes the hazy, unreal atmosphere of the film, as DEAD MAN's examination of the essential strangenessof nature is a longtime Young theme. Bits of dialogue from the film are interspersed throughout, but are poetic enough to enchance, rather than interrupt, the flow.

Sultry, moody and hypnotic, Khan's electronic soundscapes draw listeners in and envelopthem in lustrous sheets of sound. Khan is adept at creating a wide variety of sonic textures via synths and samplers, but no matter how many shimmering layers of sound come and go in these arrangements, an agreeable sense of space is maintained.
While Khan is capable of whipping up engrossing all-instrumental tracks powered by low-key hip-hop beats, he's not afraid to add a vocalist to the mix. Singer Julee Cruise lends her appropriately understated talents to the quietly trippy "Body Dump" and "Nowhere." For the most part, though, it's Khan's show, and he delivers the goods with ingenuity and sensuality.

Let us all be thankful that Ozzy's retirement didn't stick. It supposedly lasted for three days, after which he got bored and started working on this project. Heavy, riff-intensive tunes, progressive song structures and a little psychedelia give OZZMOSIS a definite Sabbath flavor. Ozzy must have been in touch with whatever inspired early classics like PARANOID and MASTERS OF REALITY. Witness the extremely chunky "Thunder Underground," which can stand up next to "Sweet Leaf" and "Symptom Of The Universe" as an archetype of hard rock. The trippy guitar in "Ghost Behind My Eyes" and "Denial" are not some young Ozzy-wannabe going for a retro sound--this man was there, "Planet Caravan"ing.
Still, this heavy metal daddy in touch with his roots is also hip to the genre's latest sound. OZZMOSIS has a live, up-front feeling, thanks to producer Michael Beinhorn (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden). Zakk Wylde's huge, raw guitar also plays a major role. He provides scorching solos, lush textures and juicy fills with a muscular tone and minimal effects--the perfect complements to Osbourne's songwriting.
But more important than the raging guitars and the big sound is attitude. Ozzy's spunk has indeed rejected retirement. His songs still spew biting commentary at whoever will listen. "Your bulls**t culture licking can't stop the deathwatch ticking/You're only mortal after all," he warns on "Thunder Underground." Ozzy himself may not be immortal, but OZZMOSIS sounds like it is.

Bad Company
The cinematic pairing of respected British thespian Anthony Hopkins and irreverent American comedian Chris Rock in BAD COMPANY might seem like an incongruous one, but the combination of styles on the soundtrack seems more of a no-brainer. The disc focuses on infectious hip-hop that bypasses gangsta and thug posturing in favor of a celebratory feel (Ali with St. Lunatics on "Breathe In, Breathe Out") and a progressive bent (Outkast's "Bombs Over Baghdad"). The upfront energy of tracks like these is offsetby a block of smooth, romantic R&B that arrives right in the middle of the album to provide a perfect breather. On this end, Jagged Edge offers some silky harmonies on "All Out of Love," while Blu Cantrell intones some heartfelt emotions on "It's Killing Me (In My Mind)." Things are capped off with an instrumental piece from composer Trevor Rabin. No, the ex-Yes guitarist isn't dabbling in hip-hop; his "BMBBO" moves from orchestral washes to Miami Vice-style percolating synths and drum machines, lending the disc an evocative exit theme.

With IN A SILENT WAY, the elements of popular music, blues and electronics that had been implicit in Miles Davis' previous recordings now came center stage, and the trumpeter never looked back again. IN A SILENT WAY is Miles' BIRTH OF THE COOL/MILES AHEAD/KIND OF BLUE for the rock generation.
Gone are the rhythmic and harmonic trappings of bebop. In their place, Miles conjures a hypnotic, subliminal dance pulse and an airy, celestial drone of electric keyboards. Miles fell in love with the bell tones and flute-like textures of Fender/Rhodes electric pianos, and in the hands of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul (who doubles on organ), they create layer upon layer of choral texture, in great reverberant washes of color and counterpoint.
The juxtaposition of groove and impressionistic drone movements creates the innertension in each of the extended pieces--Miles' "Shhh/Peaceful" and Zawinul's "In A Silent Way/It's About Time." Newcomer John McLaughlin's lyric, sitar-like guitar sets a serene mood on "Shhh," as bassist Dave Holland and drummer Williams essay a pulsating vamp. Miles' open horn is nuanced and graceful, combining long notes and cracked speech-like tones into one of his classic melodic statements, followed by McLaughlin's dancing figures and Wayne Shorter's chanting soprano. The title tune is a dark, dreamy, aquatic tone poem that breaks into an irresistable blues vamp. IN A SILENT WAY is one of Miles most sublimely beautiful, enduring creations.

Some folks were mighty surprised when virtuoso jazz guitarist Bill Frisell announced a "country project" back in 1995. This disc is the result, and it's a stunning accomplishment, especially from a man who claimed "never to have liked" country music. Of course, NASHVILLE is not "country music" by any current definition of the term. No cryin' in the beer here. Instead, Frisell uses his enormous talent as an instrumentalist to explore the textures and nuances of traditional American musical styles. "Gimme A Holler," the disc's opening track, is a perfect example of his vision; delicate and trance-like in a natural, unassuming way. The whole disc, in fact, is an extremely soothing listening experience. Even the faster numbers,like the up-tempo banjo rag "Go Jake," have a sense of control and discipline about them. You get the sense that this man knows exactly what it is he wants to get across.

The debut of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers came at a crucial time in American rock & roll history. Punk hadn't hit yet, and bloated rock dinosaurs like Bad Company and their ilk were still making life miserable for real rock & rollers. All the first generation roots-rock bands were gone. Petty's appearance marked the return of pure, unpretentious rock & roll that wasn't afraid to wear its '60s influences on its sleeve. The band's eponymous first album is full of Byrdsian ringing guitars, Dylan/McGuinn-style drawling vocals and pure pop hooks of the kind that hadn't been heard since the first Big Star album (and how many people heard Big Star at the time?). Petty also proved himself to be a world class pop songsmith oninstant classics like "American Girl" and "Breakdown."

Chicago-born love man Donell Jones's third album is a smooth collection of breathy, pleading vocals and bedroom-oriented lyrics that, given the right circumstances, could potentially lead to a mini baby boom or at least a sharp spike in the sales of scented candles and Cristal Champagne. Starting out with the quirky "Still," whose jaunty rhythms conceal a tale of good love going bad, and continuing with the old school beats of "Put Me Down," Jones assumes the persona of pleading suitor, but by the time the silky smooth keyboard figures of "You Know That I Love You" are drifting out of the speakers, he's ready to claim his place in the group of love men that includes Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and Luther Vandross, to name but a few. Jones's tremulous vocals and LIFE GOES ON's contemporary hip-hop production values, including several acoustic-based cuts such as the elegant "Comeback," all but guarantee that he'll be successful.
