No Come Down (B-Sides & Outtakes)
NO COME DOWN is a compilation of assorted alternate takes, live performances, acoustic versions, and B-sides previously unavailable in the United States. Since the Verve's first release in the early-'90s, the band quickly amassed a large number of non-album B-sides in its UK homeland. In the U.S., fewearly Verve singles were released, so a B-sides/rarities compilation, NO COME DOWN, was issued in 1994. While NO COME DOWN understandably doesn't have the thematic cohesiveness of the band's superb albums (A STORM IN HEAVEN, A NORTHERN SOUL, URBAN HYMNS), there are plenty of gems. Standouts include the album-opening title track, gorgeous acoustic versions of "Make It 'til Monday" and "Butterfly," a "USA mix" of "Blue," plus a long and winding live version of the epic "Gravity Grave." Boys Don't Cry
The Cure: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar); Michael Dempsey (vocals, bass); Lol Tolhurst (drums). Recorded at Morgan Studios, London, England in 1979. Inaugurating the shadowy gloom/blissful pop combination that became the Cure's trademark, BOYS DON'T CRY contains healthy portions of both, along with a dose of punk-fueled angst befitting the times in which it was recorded. Robert Smith reveals himself as an alarminglydeveloped songwriter--though he was still in his late teens when these songs were written, his compositional abilities are as impressive as the potential they reveal. The album produced a string of hits, several of which were to remain signature tunes for the group throughout their lengthy tenure in pop's upper strata. The title track, as touchingly naive and vulnerable a love song as one could ask for, is the album's best-known song. "Killing An Arab," based on a famous passage from "The Stranger," attracted controversy while it displayed Smith's burgeoning taste in exotic compositional textures. The gently bizarre "10:15 Saturday Night" is a calm study in dynamics, while "Jumping Someone Else's Train" is a cry for individuality, a sentiment truly at the heart of this and all the group's work. Lifeblood
Welsh politicos' seventh studio album follows 2001's 'Know Your Enemy' and the following year's greatest hits collection 'Forever Delayed'. Arguably the most pop orientated album they have ever recorded, 'Lifeblood' marks a sharp divergencefrom their earlier work, featuring lush, slickly-produced tracks with few guitars in sight. Produced in part by longtime David Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti, it includes the single 'The Love Of Richard Nixon'. SKU: 6574554

The Eagles: Bernie Leadon (vocals, guitar, steel guitar, banjo, mandolin); Joe Walsh (vocals, guitar, organ); Glen Frey (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Don Henley (vocals, guitar, drums, percussion); Don Felder (vocals, guitar); Randy Meisner, Timothy B. Schmit (vocals, bass). Additional personnel includes: John Corey, Timothy Drury (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Al Garth (violin, clarinet, saxophone); Gary Grimm (keyboards, percussion); Jay Oliver (keyboards); Scott Crago (drums, percussion); Jeremy Janeczko (percussion). Producers include: Glyn Johns, BillSzymczyk, Elliot Scheiner, Rob Jacobs, Jay Oliver. Includes a 40-page book with liner notes by Bill Szymczyk, David Wild, and Glen Frey. This four-disc box set takes the listener on a detailed tour of the Eagles' career. One of the most successful American groups of the '70s, the Eagles combined country-rock roots with the burgeoning L.A. soft-rock aesthetic that reigned in the U.S. at the time. The artfully arranged SELECTED WORKS moves from the early, earthy "Take it Easy" and "Already Gone" to the pure pop balladry of "The Best of My Love," "I Can't Tell You Why," and the roadhouse rock of "Heartache Tonight" and "Life in the Fast Lane." The unerringly infectious melodies and carefully constructed, tight-as-a-drum arrangements go a long way toward explaining why some regarded the Eagles as the "American Beatles." The live material included on the fourth disc offers an au natural glimpse of the band, revealing that they were solid even with all the studio polish stripped away. SKU: 1047013

No Looking Back
Personnel: Clarence"Gatemouth" Brown (vocals, guitar, fiddle); Michelle Shocked (vocals); Ron Harris, Tommy Moran (guitar); Bobby Campo (flute, trumpet, flugelhorn); Bill Samuel (alto & baritone saxophones); Dennis Taylor (tenor saxophone); Terry Townson (trumpet); John Touchy (trombone); Michael Holmes (piano, organ); Harold Floyd (acoustic & electric basses); Waldo LaTowsky (drums); Hound Dog Samuel (barking). Recorded at Ultrasonic Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana. Includes liner notes by Jim Nelson. Another installment from the cowboy-hatted, Firebird-sporting "Don't call me a bluesman" bluesman. Brown's correct in insisting that plays beyond the bounds of one genre, and he's been in the business long enough to hold forth on what he does and doesn't do. He learned about country music and fiddle tunes as a kid in Louisiana and fell under the spell of Texas style blues and swing music in the postwar years when T-Bone Walker was the man on electric guitar. Gate's T-Bone-influenced playing is also laced heavily with big-band style chord hits; the horn arrangements his band plays fit hand-in-glove with his guitar, as they are often worked out directly from his six-string parts. NO LOOKING BACK has plenty of straight-up blues, from the shuffling "My Own Prison" and the slow blues "Better Off With The Blues" to the uptempo "Digging New Ground" and "We're Outta Here." But he also cooks on Ellington's "C-Jam Blues," waxes country in a duet with Michelle Shocked, and plays some funky fiddle on the swampy instrumental "Stop Time." SKU: 1012230

Verve Remixed Vol.1 (UK Special Edition) [ECD]
Compilation producers: Dahlia Ambach, Jason Olaine. This compilation featuring remixes of tunes from the vaults of one of the premier '50s and '60s jazz labels varies in tone from the thumping house of the Dorfmeister Con Madrid reworking of Willie Bobo's "Spanish Grease" to the ethereal tones of Thievery Corporation's re-imagining of Astrud Gilberto's "Who Needs Forever?." Tricky performs his usual impenetrable sleight-of-hand on the Billie Holiday classic "Strange Fruit," giving the terrifying imagery of a Southern lynching an appropriately dark, disturbing feel, while in contrast Sarah Vaughan's "Summertime" is given a reggae bassline that percolates under the song's languid string arrangement. The brace of Nina Simone cuts ("Feelin' Good" and "See-Line Woman") are given the appropriate updated R&B treatment, while the other Billie Holiday track, "Don't Explain," treats the singer's voice as an adjunct to a musical experiment. Although some of the originals find themselves submerged beneath multi-layered waves of electronica, there's enough here of interest to make this an exploration wellworth investigating. SKU: 1072926

Live - In The City Of Light [Remastered]
This is a limited edition of 5,000 copies, packaged in a "miniature" replica of the original vinyl LP's sleeve. Simple Minds: Mel Gaynor (vocals, drums); Jim Kerr (vocals); Charlie Burchill (guitar); Michael MacNeil (piano, keyboards); John Giblin (bass). Additional personnel: Robin Clark (vocals); Lisa Germand (violin); Sue Hadjopoulos (percussion); Douglas Cowan (programming). Recorded live at LeZenith, Paris, France in August 1986. Recorded at the Paris Olympia during the 1986 ONCE UPON A TIME tour, the two-disc LIVE IN THE CITY OF LIGHT is a sprawling, sonically crystalline set detailing Simple Minds at their commercial peak. Many longtime fans of the band feel that their earliest albums, from 1979's LIFE IN A DAY through 1981's double SONSAND FASCINATION/SISTER FEELINGS CALL, are the Scottish group's best work, but other than a brief snippet of "Love Song" from 1980's EMPIRES AND DANCE in a medley, Jim Kerr and company ignore their early years entirely. All of these 14 lengthy tracks come from the band's more commercially successful period, covering 1982's NEW GOLD DREAM, 1984's SPARKLE IN THE RAIN and 1985's ONCE UPON A TIME, plus of course the hit single "Don't You (Forget About Me)." The performances are superb, but reworkings of earlier gems like "I Travel" would have been fascinating. SKU: 1079081

History Of The Grateful Dead Vol.1 (Bear's Choice)
Full title: History Of The Grateful Dead Vol. 1: Bear's Choice. The Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan (vocals, harmonica, organ, percussion); Phil Lesh (bass); Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart (drums). Additional personnel: Bill Graham (spoken vocals). Recorded live at Bill Graham's Fillmore East, New York on February 13 and 14, 1970. Released July 13, 1973; the Grateful Dead's ninth album. The album was mastered directly from Bear's stereo recordings. CD mastered by Joe Gastwirt. Includes liner notes by Bear. Released in July of 1973, BEAR'S CHOICE was the third of three consecutive live releases by the Dead. Culled from two legendary (among Deadheads anyway) concerts at the fabled Fillmore East in 1970, it is perhaps their most rustic album: the Dead unplugged. The band sounds genuinely off-hand, with spontaneous stage patter adding to the low-key ambiance. They sound like a bunch of guys just hanging out and making music. The set consists of seven songs, six of them covers. The fiery blues singing of Ron "Pigpen" McKernan is the highlight here. He sings on the 18-minute workout of Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightning," as well as Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle," which was later a hit for the Black Crowes. The earnest, country-tinged vocals of Bob Weir are featured on the Everly Brothers' "Wake Up Little Susie" and the plaintive folk number "Dark Hollow." Jerry Garcia takes an uncharacteristically low-key role here; but he does sing the spooky Appalachian ballad "All Around this World"and a moving rendition of the one Dead-penned song here, the elegiac "Black Peter." Fulfillingness First Finale [Remastered]
Personnel: Stevie Wonder (vocals, various instruments, piano); Michael Sembello (guitar); Sneaky Pete (pedal steel guitar); Reggie McBride, James Jamerson (bass); Bobbye Hall (bongos, congas); Rocky (congas);Paul Anka, The Jackson 5, The Persuasions, Lani Groves, Syreeta Wright, Shirley Brewer, Larry "Nastyee" Latimer, Jim Gilstrap, Denise Williams, Minnie Riperton (background vocals). Producer: Stevie Wonder. Reissue producer: Harry Weinger. Recorded at The Record Plant and Westlake Audio, Los Angeles, California and Media Sound, New York, New York. Originally released on Tamla (T332). Digitally remastered Kevin Reeves. While the phrase, "greatest album" is a useless distinction for the great Stevie Wonder, the material contained herein finds him at a pinnacle of his more introspective songwriting mode. Released between the chart-topping splendor of INNERVISIONS and the monumental SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, FULFULLINGNESS' FIRST FINALE has spare instrumentation and a particularly personal tone. From gospel-inflected affirmations to the funky classic, "Boogie On Reggae Woman," this music is spirited. Stevie sings out on a seamless array of love declarations ("Creepin") and social protestations ("You Haven't Done Nothin"). The melodies are simple and evocative, spiced with jazzy harmonies. Between his gentle clavinet work and his inspired synth romps, the man's got a great keyboard palette, and he surely knows how to use it. Throughout, Stevie provides excellent interplay between foreground and background, rounding out his vocal and keyboard flights with haunting overdubs. Perhaps most outstanding is the moving reverie, "Heaven Is," a hand-clapping groove on the divine. Let's face it -- few soulsters can be quite as mesmerizing as Stevie with a line like, "Love is so a-ma-zing." SKU: 1032189

Nativity In Black Vol.1 (A Tribute To Black Sabbath)
Producers: Biohazard, John "The Bastard" (track 1); White Zombie, Bryan Carlstrom (track 2); Max Norman (tracks 3, 10); Hypo Luxa (track 4); Terry Date, Chris Tsangarides (track 5); John Custer (track 6); Andy Wallace (track 7); Toby Wright (track 8); Rachel Bolan (track 9); William Shapland (track 11); Silver/Steele (track 12). Engineers: John Custer (track 6); Andy Wallace (track 7); Bruce Calder (track 9). Includes liner notes by Steffan Chirazi. All songs written by F. Iommi, T. Butler, W. Ward and J. Osbourne. Megadeth's "Paranoid" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Black Sabbath's reign over heavy metal is often imitated but never equaled. While other thug rockers of the late '60s relied on their blues backgrounds, Sabbath virtually invented heavy metal andits macabre subject matter. Today Black Sabbath is still monstrously influential. It's slipping out in the head-banging antics of Beavis & Butt-Head as they hum "Iron Man," or the no-frills riffing and drum massacres of most heavy metal bands. Without Black Sabbath, where would metal and hard rock be? With this in mind, NATIVITY IN BLACK: A TRIBUTE TO BLACK SABBATH evokes the spirit of the immortal Sabbath, and adds spice to even the hardest of today's metal and alternative acts as diverse as Ugly Kid Joe and Biohazard. From the gorgeous instrumentation of Sepultura's version of "Symptom Of The Universe," to the feedback-drenched "Children Of The Grave" as told by White Zombie, NATIVITY IN BLACK is a Sabbath-lover's treat. Quick One, A [Remastered]
The Who: Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar, cello, penny whistle); John Entwistle (vocals, trumpet, bass); Roger Daltrey (vocals, trombone); Keith Moon (drums). Producer: Kit Lambert. Reissue producer: Jon Astley. Principally recorded at IBC Studios, Pye Studios and Regent Sound, London, England in 1966. Tracks 1-10 originally released in the U.K. in 1966 as A QUICK ONE on Reaction (593002). Tracks 11-14 originally released in the U.K. in 1966 on the EP READY STEADY WHO! on Reaction (592001). Includes liner notes by Chris Stamp, the original release liner notes from READY STEADY WHO! by Francis Hitching and the original release liner notes from the U.S. album HAPPY JACK by Nick Jones. This 1995 reissue of A QUICK ONE includes the original British album along with four songs from the EP READY STEADY WHO!, three B-sides ("Doctor, Doctor," "I've Been Away" and "In The City") and three previously unreleased tracks. A QUICK ONE was first released in the U.S. in 1967 under the title HAPPY JACK, with the single "Happy Jack" replacing the British album track "Heatwave." A pivotal album in the early career of The Who, A QUICK ONE is the bridge between the band's original incarnation as a hard rockin' mod pop group and its subsequent, more ambitious, experimental phase. The album is also notable because it's centerpiece, "A Quick One, While He's Away," represents Pete Townshend's first attempt at "rock opera," a form which he and The Who would later perfect on TOMMY and QUADROPHENIA. The ten-minute track contains all the elements of the trademark Who style--complex arrangements and vocal harmonies, alternating heavy electric and light acoustic passages and a preoccupation with issues of morality and sexuality. Also interesting is the fact that A QUICK ONE includes, in addition to severalTownshend masterpieces, one Roger Daltrey tune and two excellent songs each from both John Entwistle and Keith Moon. The Entwistle-penned tracks ("Whiskey Man" and "Boris the Spider") are among his best and introduced fans for the first time to the virtuoso bassist's dark, twisted sense of humor. Although prior to A QUICK ONE's release The Who had several hit singles, it was this album that put the music world on notice that Townshend and crew were far more than simply a high energy rock & roll band. Acoustic Soul...A Change Is Gonna Come
Personnel includes: India Arie (vocals, acoustic guitar, bass, percussion); Bob Power (conductor); Blue Miller (acoustic & electrc guitars, programming); Marlene Rice, Kelly Hall-Tompkins (violin); Judeth Insel-Stack (viola); John Catchings, Nioka Workman (cello); Mark Batson (celeste, Fender Rhodes piano, organ, Mellotron, keyboards, synthesizer, drums, percussion, programming); Larry Goldings (Wurlitzer piano, organ); Tony Harrell (keyboards); Avery Johnson, Doug Kahan (bass); Steve Grossman (drums, percussion); Abe Fogle, Ralph Rolle (drums); Dave Spak, Terry MacMillan, Bashiri Johnson (percussion); Carlos Broady (programming); Kerisha Hicks, Tony Harrington, Joyce Simpson, Duane Covert (background vocals). Producers: India Arie, Kevin Haywood, Blue Miller, Bob Power, Mark Batson. Engineers: Mike Tocci, Kevin Haywood, Avery Johnson. India Arie was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. ACOUSTIC SOUL was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and for Best R&B Album. "Video" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year, for Song Of The Year, for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song. Cut from the same rootsy R&B cloth as Erykah Badhu, Atlanta-born India Arie's full-length debut after her first public emergence on Spike Lee's BAMBOOZLED soundtrack is a down-home affair, where acoustic guitars, live drums, and stand-up bass share space with more contemporary production devices. Arie's voice has an insinuating, seductive undertone that works its way into the listener'ssubconscious. Songs such as "Video" are both catchy and centered on a subtly feminist theme, proving that Arie is up to having her cake and eating it, too, while the unimpeachably sexy "Brown Skin" is quintessential bedroom mood music. Arie's debut promises much, and delivers even more. SKU: 1062763

Chieftains Vol.2
The Chieftans: SeanKeene, Martin Fay (fiddle); Michael Tubridy (flute, tin whistle, concertina); Paddy Moloney (tin whistle, Uilleann pipes); Sean Potts (tin whistle); Peadar Mercier (bodhran). Recorded in Edinburgh, Scotland in April 1969. Includes liner notes by Sean O Baoill. All tracks have been digitally remastered. The kind of musical expertise and virtuosity that fans have come to expect from later CDs is apparent even on this 1969 Chieftains sophomore release. The younger Chieftains play with the same kind of verve displayed in their later CDs. Highlights on CHIEFTAINS 2 include "Planxty George Brabazon" a piece that brings us to an early period in poetical Ireland, while "Bean an Fhir Rua" is a song whose many versions tell of the frustrated love of a traveling tailor for a married woman. Paddy Maloney's Uilleann pipe introduction is stately and sorrowful, but as the fiddles and tin whistle enter into the mix, the music gradually brightens, ultimately becoming altogether more hopeful. The Irish harp composer Carolan (1670-1738) wrote the words and music to this charming drinking song. SKU: 5066316

On The Border
The Eagles: Bernie Leadon (vocals, guitar, banjo, steel guitar); Glenn Frey (vocals, guitar, piano); Randy Meisner (vocals, bass); Don Henley (vocals, drums); Don Felder (electric guitar). Recorded at the Record Plant, Los Angeles, California; Olympic Studios, London, England. ON THE BORDER marked a point of transition for the Eagles, a halfway point between their original country-rock sound and the slick pop-rock they would later embrace. The arrival of guitarist Don Felder helped eventuate this shift, even as founding member/multi-instrumentalist Bernie Leadon found himself increasingly alienated by the move away from his rootsier orientation. "Midnight Flyer," the smash hit "Already Gone," and Leadon's "My Man," an elegy to Eagles influence Gram Parsons, are the remaining traces of the old sound. The title track finds the band flirting with the disco-funk sound they would pursue further on their subsequent album ONE OF THESE NIGHTS. "The Best of My Love" is the kind of flawlessly constructed '70s radio staple for which the term soft-rock was invented. The band's cover version of the Tom Waits ballad "Ol' 55" was perhaps the furthest from its origins any Waits composition wouldget until Rod Stewart took on "Downtown Train" many years later. Recorded at the Hit Factory, New York, New York; The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California; The Record Plant, Sausalito, California. Includes liner notes by Stevie Wonder All tracks have been digitally remastered. SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE is a milestone in Stevland Morris' career and a masterwork of American popular music. Released in 1976, this double LP spent 14 of its 80 charting weeks at number one. From his sharp commentaries on American social history and pro-peace supplications to some ofhis most intimate professions of love, witness Stevie Wonder at a prolific point in his career, casting his music further beyond R&B, funk, and disco than ever before. Present here are some of Stevie's greatest hits in their original context: the widely-sampled horn swirls of "Sir Duke," comical baby-noise-laced jamming of "Isn't She Lovely" and fiercely poetic declaration of "As" still shine as brightly as ever. Perhaps less well-known are tunes like, "Joy Inside My Tears," a slow, entrancing, synth-vamp on love's redemptive powers, or the fast-grooving funkout, "Black Man," a compelling salute to America's pioneers of color. The keyboard sounds are as varied as ever, the bass as waggish as Bootsy, the arrangements a consummate preparation of melody and harmony. KEY OF LIFE is an inspired work in which Stevie marvels at life's unexpected miracles. SKU: 1052116

Synchronicity [Remastered] [ECD]
The Police: Sting (vocals, bass); Andy Summers (vocals, guitar); Stewart Copeland (vocals, drums). Recorded at Air Studios, Montserrat and Le Studio, Quebec, Canada. Fancy knowing you were going to break up and yet be able to record and produce this masterpiece. The world domination of the Police was as calculated and planned as was their departure. Each of the intervening albums have something special but the power of tracks such as 'SynchronicityII', and the haunting quality of 'Every Breath You Take' (you really believe Sting when he says, 'I'll be watching you') give this record the edge. The only tracks less than brilliant are Summers' and Copeland's offerings, a fact of which they must all have been aware. They bowed out while they were still winning. SKU: 1085287

Killer
Alice Cooper: Alice Cooper (vocals); Michael Bruce (guitar, keyboards); Glen Buxton (guitar); Dennis Dunaway (bass); Neil Smith (drums). Recorded at RCA Studios, Chicago, Illinois. Alice Cooper's second release of 1971, KILLER, helped solidify the band's position as rock's most notorious, shocking, violent, sleazy and theatrical band of the day, serving as an obvious influence onsuch future rockers as Kiss, White Zombie, and Marilyn Manson. Cut from the same musical cloth as its predecessor LOVE IT TO DEATH, KILLER replaces the space-rock of their earlier releases with blaring hard rock. Also, the band successfully broadened its sound on KILLER by adding orchestrated sounds and synthesizers to the mix. Several tracks would become Alice Cooper staples, such as the vicious "Desperado" (which uses acoustic guitar and a string section to great effect), and the anthemic leadoff track "Under My Wheels," which Alice would later re-record with Guns N' Roses. Criticized and misconstrued at the time of the album's release, the eerie "Dead Babies" deals with child abuse--still disturbing stuff all these years later. One of Cooper's more progressive tunes, "Halo of Flies" is an eight-minute-plus highlight, consisting of several different sections, ditto the nearly-as-long closing title track. KILLER is classic Alice Cooper. SKU: 5045806

Ahead Of Their Time
Full performer name: Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention. Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Ian Underwood (alto saxophone, piano); Bunk Gardner (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Euclid James Motorhead Sherwood (baritone saxophone, tambourine); Jon Preston (electric piano); Roy Estrada (bass); Arthur Dyer Tripp III (drums, percussion); Jimmy Carl Black (drums). Additional personnel: The BBC Symphony Orchestra. Recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall, London, England in 1968. Although it wasn't released until 1993, AHEAD OF THEIR TIME is a live Zappa/Mothers of Invention recording taped on October 28, 1968, at the Royal Festival Hall in London. It was the final date of a lengthy European tour, and Zappa was asked to pick an opening act to warm up this particular show. Throughout the tour, Frank had been composing chamber music pieces in his free time in hotels and airports. So instead of hiring a band to open the show, Frank decided to use this time to his advantage. He hired members of the BBC Symphony to perform these pieces, while having Mothers members Ian Underwood, Bunk Gardner, and Arthur Dyer Tripp III act out a play over the music. Zappa realized he could record the performance, and possibly release it as his next album. For whatever reason, he was not happy with the results at the time, and the tapes of the show sat in a vault for years. Listening today, the performance is comparable to his subsequent play, 1971's UNCLE MEAT, since it's a combination of rock ("Let's Make the Water Turn Black," "Transylvania Boogie"), orchestra ("Prologue"), and theater ("Progress?"). New York
Personnel includes: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar); Mike Rathke (guitar); Rob Wasserman, Fred Maher (bass, drums); Moe Tucker (percussion); Dion DiMucci (background vocals). Recorded at Media Sound, New York, New York. Arguably the finest album of Reed's solo career,NEW YORK hails back to the days of the Velvets with its no-nonsense approach and unflinchingly sardonic lyrics. The difference is that there's a lifetime of learning in the songs here, and Reed had learned how to focus his incisive wit, sharpening his lyrical knife to a fine point with attacks on the NYPD, Jesse Jackson, right wing extremists and a host of others. An attractive development on NEW YORK is the way Reed deftly intermingles plain-spoken socio-political observations with inspired poetic flights, as on the street fable "Romeo Had Juliette." Reed proves to be an adept social critic on "Endless Cycle," which examines the cyclical nature of physical abuse with unerring precision, and the unlikely radio hit "Dirty Blvd.," where Reed takes a look at the disparity between haves and have-nots in his storied home town. On "Dimestore Mystery," a precursor to SONGS FOR DRELLA, he uses Andy Warhols death as a vehicle for musing on the human and the divine, and the mortality that separates the two. Mo Tucker's guest appearance on this track furthers the VU comparisons. After the Velvet Underground albums, NEW YORK is the essential Lou Reed work to own. SKU: 1011227

Freak Of Nature
Personnel includes: Anastacia, Faith Evans (vocals); Miklos Malek (various instruments); Eric Kupper (acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, bass, drums); Chieli Minucci (acoustic & electric guitars); Chris Camozzi (guitar); Joel Derouin, Becky Bunnell (violin); Roland Kata, Denyse Buffum (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Sharon Bryant, Audrey Wheeler, Nicole Renee (background vocals). Producers: Richie Jones, Ric Wake, Sam Watters, Louie Biancaniello. Sporting the cleavage-and-bare-midriff look that's requisite early-21st century pop femme-wear, the Berlin-transplanted, Brazilian-born blonde bombshell drops her sophomore album with all the subtlety of a Pamela Anderson video. While her vocals lack the is-she-or-isn't-she breathlessness of a Britney Spears or Mandy Moore (it's pretty obvious Anastacia isn't, and hasn't been for a while), she does project an unmistakable earthiness and raw sexuality, notably in the album's title track and "Why'd You Lie to Me?" both of which find her in a feisty mood. Pity the fool who'd even think about getting on her bad side. Anastacia channels Chaka Khan in the Brazilian-inflected rhythms of "Don't Cha Wanna" and shows her quieter, if no less uncompromising side, in "Overdue Goodbye" ("this is a message--pay attention...") which features perhaps the weirdest yet recorded pronunciation of "goodbye," but is nevertheless a charming excursion into Anastacia's gentler mode. With a couple of Celine-style ballads ("Hold On," "I Dreamed You") that also lighten the mood, FREAK OF NATURE is a well-rounded effort. SKU: 1068089

Smile (Songs From The Movies)
Personnel includes: Lyle Lovett (vocals); Keb' Mo (acoustic guitar); Ray Herndon, Dave Hungate, John Tropea, Mark Goldenberg (guitar); Dean Parks (electric guitar); Larry Campbell (pedal steel); Yuri Vodovoz, Ann Leathers, Laura Hamilton Donna Tecco, Nancy McAlhany, Jan Mullen, Abe Appleman, A. Maura Giannini (violin); Crystal Garner, Susan Pray, Maryhelen, Ewing Brennand (viola); Andy Snitzer (alto saxophone); Plas Johhson, Kenneth Hitchcock, Dave Tofani (tenor saxophone); Mark Isham, James Hynes, Jeff Kievit (trumpet); Michael Davis (trombone); Randy Newman (piano, harmonium); Matt Rollings, George Duke (piano); John Leftwich, Viktor Krauss, Abraham Loboriel (bass); Russ Kunkel, Kenny Malone, John Ferarro, Shawn Pelton (drums); Vaneese Thomas, Tawatha Agee (background vocals). Producers include: Lyle Lovett, Billy Williams, Matt Rollings, Don Was, Mark Isham. Recorded at Conway Studios and Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, California; House Of Therm, Nashville, Tennessee; Avatar and Right Track Studios, New York, New York. By 2003, fans of Lyle Lovett had grown hungry for any offerings from their hero, as his last album of newmaterial was 1996's THE ROAD TO ENSENADA. While awaiting the next batch of compositions from Lovett's witty pen, they'd been treated to a live album (LIVE IN TEXAS) and a double record featuring covers of tunes by other great Texan songwriters (STEP INSIDE THIS HOUSE). Taking a slighty different track, SMILE is a collection of songs the lanky Lovett recorded for various movie soundtracks over the previous 10 years or so. While Lovett obviously didn't pen such classics as "The Summer Wind," "Blue Skies," or the title track himself, he brings his signature laconic vocal style to the fore so convincingly that you'll find yourself campaigning for giving him honorary composer's credit.
