Complete Vanguard Years
THE COMPLETE VANGUARD RECORDINGS contains CELEBRATIONS FOR A GREY DAY (1965)/ REFLECTIONS IN A CRYSTAL WIND (1965)/MEMORIES (1968) plus previously unissued performances from the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Personnel includes: Richard Farina (vocals, dulcimer); Mimi Farina(vocals, guitar, autoharp); Peter Schickele (arranger); Joan Baez, Peter Yarrow, Jean Ritchie (vocals, guitar); Bruce Langhorne (electric guitar, dulcimer, tambourine); John Hammond, Gyle Garahan (harmonica); Charlie Smalls (piano, electric piano, celeste); Russ Savakus (acoustic & electric basses); Felix Pappalardi (electric bass); Fritz Richmond (washtub bass); Alvin Rogers (drums). Producer: Richard Farina. Reissue producer: Tom Vickers. Recorded in New York, New York and live at the Newport Folk Festival, Newport, Rhode Island in 1965. Includes original liner notes by Richard Farina and reissue liner notes by Todd Everett. Digitally remastered by Jeff Zaraya. Though he's remembered by few other than '60s folk aficionados, Richard Farina was one of the most innovative singer-songwriters of the post-Beatles era. On a par with Dylan (in whose company he was often found in the '60s), Farina was one of the first to meld folk tradition with poetic lyrical imagery, not to mention folk and country forms with pop-rock arrangement/instrumentation. Playing dulcimer and accompanied by the high harmonies and acoustic guitar of his wife Mimi (younger sister of Joan Baez), Richard was one of the most important artists of the '60s folk boom, equally renowned for his literary work (his novel BEEN DOWN SO LONG IT LOOKS LIKE UP TO ME successfuly bridged the gap between the beats and the hippies). Richard's tragic death in 1966 ended the duo's career, but THE COMPLETE VANGUARD RECORDINGS is the definitive testament to the lasting value of their legacy, featuring every note the pair ever recorded. From the warm-hearted country lilt of "Pack up Your Sorrows" (later recorded by Johnny Cash) to the striking war imagery of "Bold Marauder," the songs on the Farinas' two albums offer some of the most distinctive, forward-looking "folk" music you'll hear. This set's third disc's first half features outtakes previously released as MEMORIES, many just as impressive as the original albums. The second half is a full live set from the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, where the pair's keening harmonies enliven some of the best songs from their albums. Listen and learn. SKU: 1073510

Hips And Makers
Personnel: Kristin Hersh (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Michael Stipe (vocal); Jane Scarpantoni (cello). Producers: Lenny Kaye, Kristin Hersh, Steve Rizzo. Recorded at Stable Sound, Portsmouth, Rhode Island. HIPS AND MAKERS is the first solo outing from Kristen Hersh, frontwoman and singer-songwriter of Throwing Muses, the seminal '80s alt-rock group. Whereas Muses records prove that Hersh can imbue her dark, singular vision with enough edgy sonic aggression to garner underground kudos, this disc explores her softer, more lyrical tendencies. The album is wholly acoustic, augmented throughout with bass, guitar overdubs, and tasteful string arrangements. Such instrumentation perfectly suits Hersh's web-like song structures and her gift for aching melodicism. As one expects from Hersh, the album is anything but soothing. Poetic, often highly metaphorical lyrics voiced in eerie refrains float through angular, spiraling chord progressions. "Your Ghost," a duet with R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, is a masterpiece of haunted love that lingers in the listener's brain like a dream. Such songs as "Sundrops" and "Me And My Charms" are charged with a fearful intensity, revealing the fine line between rage anddeep emotional pain. Part of Hersh's appeal is her ability to convey both despair and beauty. "Velvet Days," a love poem to her child and one of Hersh's loveliest songs, is a shining example of the latter. HIPS AND MAKERS is a fierce, moving, and beautiful collection of songs by a wonderful and often overlooked artist. SKU: 1007558

Introducing Brad Mehldau
Personnel: Brad Mehldau (piano); Christian McBride, Larry Grenadier (bass); Brian Blade, Jorge Rossy (drums). Recorded at Power Station, New York, New York on March 12 & April 3, 1995. When this young pianist burst onto the '90s jazz scene, he created quite a stir. Outside of free/avant-garde jazz, there hadn't been a piano player this strikingly distinctive for a long time. Mehldau's obvious forebears are people like Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett. Like them, he edges closer to the style of French impressionists such as Debussy than to any blues-based tradition. On such standards as "My Romance and "It Might as Well be Spring," Mehldau spins out gauzy harmonies and elegant melodic lines that venture far from the musical languageused to construct the tunes. Mehldau's interaction with his trio is an integral aspect of his work; drummer Jorge Rossy's endlessly percolating rhythms, based around intricate ride cymbal work, interlock seamlessly with Mehldau's panoramic playing and Larry Grenadier's knotty, forceful bass lines. INTRODUCING unleashed on the world the kind of artist that comes along only once per generation. SKU: 5023651

This beautifully packaged four-cd boxed set, complete with extensive liner notes, biographical information, and comprehensive lyric sheets, is an essential collection for any Billy Joel fan. The chronologically arranged material on THE COMPLETE HITS unfolds like a historical survey of the past 25 years, underscoring Joel's acute social awareness, which is especially evident on songs like "Leningrad" and "Allentown:" "Every child had a pretty good shot/To get at least as far as their old man got/But something happened on the way to that place/They threw an American flag in our face." Also prevalent are Joel's matchless romantic ballads, including "She's Got a Way" and "She's Always a Woman," and his unshakable pop hits like "Uptown Girl," and "Keeping the Faith." Billy Joel's songs are so consistently familiar that it's easy to forget how groundbreaking and distinctive his dynamic, piano-led arrangements were when he began his career; this collection accentuates the timeless, lasting nature of Joel's accomplishments. Duets
Personnel includes: Elton John (vocals, piano, keyboards); Stevie Wonder (various instruments, programming, background vocals); Nik Kershaw (various instruments); Marcella Detroit (vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboards); Chris Rea (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Bonnie Raitt (vocals, slide guitar); K.D. Lang, P.M. Dawn, Little Richard, Don Henley, Kiki Dee, Tammy Wynette, Gladys Knight, Rupaul, Paul Young, Leonard Cohen, George Michael (vocals); Don Potter (acoustic guitar); Dan Huff (electric guitar); Dean Parks (guitar, lap steel); Danny Jacob, Martin Bliss, Mike Thompson, Paul Jackson, Jr., Mark Goldenberg (guitar); Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Corrado Rustici (mandolin); Andy Hamilton, Plas Johnson (saxophone); Nathan East (bass). Producers include: Greg Penny, P.M. Dawn, Elton John, Don Henley, Narada Michael Walden. Engineers include: Van Arden, Stuart Epps, Gabe Veltri. It is a creditto Elton John's gregarious nature and artistic malleability that DUETS works on so many different levels despite having a line-up of partners that appear to have been picked by someone throwing darts at a list of names. Some appear to make sense whereas others seem unfathomable. It's only proper that EJ's first and most successful partner Kiki Dee returns on a lush remake of Cole Porter's "True Love," while drag superstar RuPaul kitschs it up in Dee's place during a high energy reading of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." Bonnie Raitt helps our hero take the standard "Love Letters" to church with some aid from Billy Preston's sanctified piano playing, whereas the faux countrypolitan pacing of "Born To Lose" works surprisingly well in accommodating both John's supple tenor and Leonard Cohen's low rumble of a voice. Elton John's solo singing is given excellent representation by "Duets For One," an amazingly upbeat song co-written with Squeeze's Chris Difford that features Chris Rea's twangy slide guitar. Rea does double-duty, getting his turn at the mike with John on the guitarist's self-penned "If You Were Me." SKU: 1000344

Almost Famous
ALMOST FAMOUS won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. Long before he became a world famous director, Cameron Crowe cut his teeth on the road as a teenage reporter for Rolling Stone magazine. In his fourth directorial role, Crowe uses this personal experience to create a fictional account of his real-life adventures. In co-producing the accompanying soundtrack with partner Danny Bramson, the acclaimed filmmaker loads up on '70s heavy hitters without going for obvious song choices. Classic rock fans can salivate over The Who ("Sparks"), Lynyrd Skynyrd ("Simple Man") and Rod Stewart ("EveryPicture Tells A Story") along with lesser-known names like Thunderclap Newman ("Something In The Air") and the Seeds ("Mr. Farmer"). One of Crowe's more notable feats was using a relationship with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant (dating back to his teen years) to convince them to license a Led Zep song ("That's The Way") to a soundtrack for the first time ever. Other treats include a 1972 live version of David Bowie covering "I'm Waiting For The Man" and the Beach Boys' 1971 psychedelic nugget "Feel Flows." Also included is wife Nancy Wilson's Donovan-like instrumental "Mr. Trumble" and cock-rock stomper "Fever Dog" by Stillwater, the fictional band at the center of ALMOST FAMOUS. SKU: 1047633

Compilation producer: Paul Williams. Engineers include: Al Schmitt, Dave Hassinger, Bob Simpson. Principally recorded at RCA Studios, Hollywood, California and live at the Harlem Square Club, Harlem, New York. Includes liner notes by Michael Hill. Digitally remastered by Bill Lacey. Although this collection's title makes a weighty claim, a tour through this rich box set makes it clear hear how Sam Cooke's fusion of gospel and pop laid the groundwork for such seminal soul artists as Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and more recently Prince and D'Angelo. This four-disc collection is divided by era and kicks off with Cooke's initial leap from gospel sensation to secular star. Alongside hits like "You Send Me" and "Only Sixteen" are more obscure cuts like "Desire Me" and "You Were Made for Me" that find Cooke managing to make staid, Mitch Miller-like vocal arrangements swing. Singles and album cuts from the RCA years (1960 to 1963) make up Discs Two and Three. Highlights include well-known classics ("Chain Gang," "Cupid"), Nat "King" Cole influenced saloon songs ("Out in the Cold Again"), and the occasional chestnut with religious roots ("Bring It on Home to Me"). Disc Four showcases the albums NIGHT BEAT and LIVE AT THE HARLEM SQUARE CLUB. Throughout these discs, Sam Cooke effortlessly tackles various musical genres including blues ("Little Red Rooster"), rock & roll ("Shake, Rattle & Roll"), folk ("Frankie and Johnny"), and standards ("Summertime"). Daybreaker
Personnel includes: Beth Orton (vocals, acoustic guitar); Ryan Adams (vocals, acoustic, electric & slide guitar, piano, bass); Emmylou Harris (vocals); Ted Barnes (acoustic guitar, mandolin); Smokey Hormel (electric guitar); Adam Peters, Oliver Kraus (cello); Jon Birdsong (trumpet); Vincent Chancey (French horn); Ben Watt (piano); Sean Read (keyboards); Ali Friend (bass); Will Blanchard, Matt Johnson (drums); Scott Minor (programming); The Wrecking Crew Orchestra, TheChemical Brothers. Producers: Victor Van Vugt, Ben Watt, Beth Orton, The Chemical Brothers. Though British singer-songwriter Beth Orton's arresting debut TRAILER PARK gained international attention for its striking blend of folk-pop and electronica, her subsequent work has found her scaling down the more electronic elements of her sound. In fact, her third album DAYBREAKER is her most organic outing to date. From sailing strings and twinkling piano to amber-toned acoustic bass and lightly brushed drums, the reference point here seems to be more Nick Drake's BRYTER LATER than anything by William Orbit. This is an exceedingly gentle outing, seldom rising above an artful murmur. Stylistically, there are a couple of brief sidesteps--"Anywhere" is driven by a light Brazilian rhythm, and the title track bears some low-key hip-hop inflections--but there's nothing on DAYBREAKER that should scare away fans of Sandy Denny or Linda Thompson. It's that very combination of old and new, Anne Briggs channeled through Paula Cole, that gives Orton her distinctive sound. SKU: 1073536

At the time of its 1980 release, HAIL had no American distribution and it was only briefly available as an import shortly after that. Thankfully, Heartbeat reissued this seminal album in 1994, at a time when Spear (a.k.a. Winston Rodney) was in the midst of a bountifully creative upswing. When Rodney entered Tuff Gong Studios to cut HAIL H.I.M., not only did he borrow St. Ann's Parish native Bob Marley's recording digs, but brought Marley's band the Wailers in as a backup band. The result is a warm-sounding record in which Spearcontinues delivering his message of Jah and Rastafari, starting with a picture of Emperor Haile Selsassie I on horseback that graces the album cover. When Spear isn't paying homage to the unifying concept of Pan-Africanism ("African Teacher," "African Postman," "Cry Blood Africans"), he's providing a musical history lesson by singing of both heroes ("Follow Marcus Garvey") and heels ("Columbus") buttressed by the Wailer's rich sound. This powerful collection deserves a place on the shelf next to anything by Marley or Peter Tosh. SKU: 1072718

Jazzmatazz Vol.3 (Streetsoul)
Personnel includes: Guru (spoken vocals, programming); Najee (flute); Donald Harrison (saxophone); "Diggity" Dave Patterson (keyboards, bass); Ahmir Thompson (keyboards, drums); Shaun Martin, James Poyser (keyboards); Dino "June Bug" Young, Bray Lon Lacy (bass); Geno Iglheari (drums); DJ Premier (programming, vinyl scratches); Victor Flowers (programming); Tammy Lucas (background vocals). Producers: Guru, DJ Scratch, DJ Premier, The Neptunes, Jay Dee. Engineers: Eric "IBO" Butler, Eddie Sancho, Cus. Includes liner notes by Amy Linden. Gangstarr's Guru has acquired some of the best talents in the business for the third in his Jazzmatazz Series. STREET SOUL is geared more towards hip-hop, displaying his renewed sense of purpose and determination to challenge all preconceived notions about the genre. Skip over one track on this release and you'll miss some serious musical talent such asHerbie Hancock on "Timeless," Isaac Hayes on the brooding "Night Vision," and The Roots' sparse percussion and mellow flow on "Lift Your Fist." "Certified" features the versatile stylings of newcomer Bilal, and a funky, feel-good beat from minimalist Jay Dee. The smoothed-out vocals of Erykah Badu and the mellow upright bass of "Plenty," Macy Gray's pouting petulance on "All I Said," and the lovely expressions of Kelis on "Supa Love" make this a release for everyone and every mood. With STREET SOUL, Guru takes hip-hop to another level, fusing it with R&B, soul, jazz and reggae. SKU: 1042984

Very Best Of The 5th Dimension, The
Between 1967 and 1973, the 5thDimension enjoyed 29 U.S. hit singles on the Soul City and Bell labels. This compilation selects all of their Top 40 hits (bar two live tracks) and tops up the running order with five lesser hits. Top-notch material by Jimmy Webb, Laura Nyro, Neil Sedaka and Bacharach & David is rendered as exquisite harmony pop by the vocal group and their producer Bones Howe. Although "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In" (from the musical "Hair") and Nyro's "Wedding Bell Blues" were the chart-toppers, Webb's "Up, Up And Away" is the archetypal 5th Dimension sound. That the songs still sound remarkably fresh is due to the avoidance of formulaic writing, with no one writer or team being allowed to dominate. From the first hit, tellingly a cover of the Mamas & The Papas' "Go Where You Wanna Go," via material by Tony Macaulay, Sloan & Barri, and Ashford & Simpson, the quality never diminishes.
