As the title suggests, this is a collection of the venerable California hardcore band's early material, and as such it's a trifle derivative. The band wears its immediate influences--the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Ramones--on its sleeve here, and the tinny low-fi sound (emblematic of the D.I.Y. spirit of the early '80s) also makes MAINLINER something of a period piece. Still, one can hear hints of the far more original work to come, particularly on the slower, sort of EXILE ON MAINSTREET-goes-punk tracks like "Playpen." There's also a nice brash take on the Stones' "Under My Thumb," a song thatwould later turn up (in far more polished and effective form) as a hidden track on Social Distortion's 1996 WHITE LIGHT, WHITE HEAT, WHITE TRASH.

If you're assuming that Asia's 1999 release, ANTHOLOGY, is a best-of collection that features the original versions of the band's biggest hits, you're mistaken. Due to a court order obtained by original Asia singer/bassist John Wetton, the vocals for the songs he originally sang on had to be re-recorded (the vocal and bass duties on ANTHOLOGY are handled by John Payne).
This isn't to say that these re-recorded versions of such Asia prog-pop favorites as "Heat of the Moment," "The Heat Goes On," "Don't Cry," and "Go" won't be enjoyable for longtime fans. But newcomers will probably want to hear the original versions first (2000's THE VERY BEST OF ASIA being your bestbet).

This is a recording of Robyn Hitchcock and The Egyptians at the 1992 Cambridge Folk Festival. It's a fine snapshot of a band, which at that point had been playing together for the better part of a decade. The set draws from their later A&M albums, but also dips further back to "Egyptian Cream." The Egyptians prove a tight combo with an especially vigorous bass guitar player in Andy Metcalfe (who was also concurrently the keyboard player for Squeeze). Their vocal skills are nicely shown off here as well, and the often complex harmony parts of their studio albums are rendered perfectly live on stage. Though Hitchcock and his Egyptians never achieved significant commercial success, it's clear that the omission was purely the result of marketplace peculiarities, and no fault of this fine band.

Brad Mehldau's interaction with his trio was always as important an element of his '90s work as his own harmonic adventurousness. The first volume of ART OF THE TRIO puts the symbiotic relationship between Mehldau, drummer Jorge Rossy, and bassist Larry Grenadier under a microscope. The inner workings of this organism are as astonishing as they are inspirational. While Mehldau retains his delicate touch and Debussy-via-Bill Evans harmonic approach, his romanticism is less dewy-eyed here.
Hisversion of "Blame it on My Youth" (he would later acknowledge the influence of Chet Baker's take on this tune) is full of pointed, precisely executed runs that stand in sharp contrast to the composition's potential for romantic indulgence. Rossy and Grenadier interlock perfectly with Mehldau, matching him with rhythms that are more extension than underpinning. A simple, poignant reading of the Beatles' "Blackbird" reminds the listener that Mehldau is young enough to be Bill Evans's son, though artistically the two pianists are unquesionably peers.

Since 1984, The Red Hot Chili Peppers have combined a punk sensibility with a lavish devotion to funk and all its facets. Having already scaled the heights of platinum status after living in the land of obscurity, the Chili Peppers have released OUT IN L.A., a chapter of their lives from when they were still unknown. This collection is broken into four sections: remixes, live tracks, demo versions of existing material, and previously unreleased songs.
Remixes include a James Brown flavored "Higher Ground" and an extended take of "Hollywood" that just oozes grooves. Their live rendition of "CastlesMade Of Sand" stays true to Hendrix's original while demo versions of "Get Up And Jump" and "Green Heaven" show off the intense interplay between bassist Flea and late guitarist Hillel Slovak. The other major bond in the group is between vocalist Anthony Kiedis and Flea, who are the sole participants on the previously unreleased "What It Is." UNFORGETTABLE employs an impressive collection of musicians and arrangers, and through the power of songwriting perfection it effectively joins two generations, creating a moving and important musical document. Helmed by uber-producer Brendan O'Brien, the album retains Sweet's veiled cynicism, whether it's the self-loathing of "Sick Of Myself"or the feeling of abandonment in "Walk Out," a song whose point is point driven by O'Brien's insistent harpsichord playing. Sweet's desperation culminates in the semi-delusional vibe ebbing from "Lost My Mind": while Menck plays a constant militaristic cadence, Quine and Lloyd riff in and out of the song and O'Brien's mellotron pulses and oozes in a vortex that has Sweet's voice ebbing in and out of a fog.
While the scenery around this part of Sweet's psyche may seem familiar, the tight production and crack playing groove enough to shed some light on this darker side of town.

Although SAY YOU WILL is Fleetwood Mac's first album without longtime singer/songwriter/keyboardist Christine McVieas a full participant (she appears only as a guest musician), the album nevertheless harks back to the frothy sound of 1982's MIRAGE, if not the '70s L.A. studio-pop glory of RUMOURS. Singer/guitarist Lindsay Buckingham's production still boasts pleasing quirks aplenty ("Red Rover," "Murrow Turning Over in His Grave"), and his trademark acoustic fingerpicking licks underpin many of the tunes in a winning way. Buckingham and Stevie Nicks share the songwriting duties, and their writing and singing styles still mesh as well as they did in their pre-Mac days as Buckingham /Nicks. SAY YOU WILL manages to sound fresh without resorting to anything as embarrassing as grafting hip-hop rhythms or electronica effects onto the group's classic pop tunes, and though it all sounds far from dated, you probably wouldn't blink twice if told this was the lost, unreleased follow-up to MIRAGE.

Let's get one thing straight right off the bat; they're not the Pogues. The casual listener might be forgiven for making such a mistake, as Flogging Molly is clearly influenced by Shane McGowan's rabble-rousers, but beyond the combination of lyrical Irish folk with punky rock rhythms, Flogging Molly is a band with itsown identity. As the accordion, fiddle and banjo toss off traditional sounds steeped in Irish musical history, the slamming drums, raging guitar, and of course vocalist/songwriter Dave King's colorful tales present a forceful rock outfit. "What's Left of the Flag" shows Flogging Molly's political acumen, while "The Sun Never Shines (On Closed Doors)" takes on larger, more metaphysical subjects. But whether the septet, who wield pennywhistles and pipes as easily as Telecasters and Stratocasters, are playing the role of rowdies or reinventing the folk ballad with rocker fury, their emotional commitment is palpable and total.

Though BITCHES BREW has attained iconic status as one of the most important, progressive statements in post-bop jazz history, it's predecessor IN A SILENT WAY--though less widely acknowledged--was perhaps even more revolutionary for its dissolution of the songform-oriented cool jazz approach and introduction of electric instruments. This three-disc set, featuring all the material laid down in those vaunted 1969 sessions, is a revelatory sonic document that further illuminates the maverick genius of Miles Davis. In addition to the original SILENT WAY tracks as we know them, there are previously unheard compositions and alternate versions that shed new light on Miles's process. "The Ghetto Walk," for example, which was never released before in any form is a slow-burner that features some of new arrival John McLaughlin's most expansive, questing guitar work (partially due to Miles's penchant for springing new, unrehearsed material on his musicians). The shifting, kaleidoscopic keyboard work of Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Joe Zawinul (what a trio!), gives another undiscovered gem "Early Minor" a haunting, ethereal feel. Additionally, the full, unedited versions of tunes included on the original album give an idea of producer Teo Macero's groundbreaking cut-and-paste editing process. For anyone interested in the evolution of modern jazz, THE COMPLETE IN A SILENT WAY SESSIONS is an essential item.

Coming on the heels of Pollard's Matador release WAVED OUT and preceding a high-profile, Ric Ocasek- produced Guided by Voices album, KID MARINE might seem like a rush job by Luna Records to cash in on the Robert Pollard bandwagon. In fact, that's not the case at all. From the opening vocal layering of "Submarine Teams" it's clear that Pollard is back in familiar lo-fi territory. It is also apparent, as the lead vocals and crunching guitars commence, that the production values (or lack thereof) only enhance the mood of the proceedings.
Songs such as "Men Who Create Fright," "Far Out Crops," and "White Gloves Come Off" will no doubt be looked back upon with as much reverence as anything Pollard has ever written when--and if--he ever decides to step out of the rock & roll game. There's a haunting quality that creeps into KID MARINE that Pollard has hinted at previously, but never fully developed into a unifying sonic concept as he does here. One hopes that the album's subtitle "#1 in the Fading Captain Series," is not just aninside joke and that the captain will return very soon.
