Echoes (The Best Of Pink Floyd)
Pink Floyd: Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Richard Wright, Syd Barrett. Producers inlcude: Pink Floyd, Michael Kamen, Bob Ezrin, Joe Boyd, Norman Smith. Compilation producer: James Guthrie, Pink Floyd. Digitally remastered by James Guthrie. Through their long history, Pink Floyd moved through psychedelia, prog-rock, space-rock, and more, emerging as a pioneer in all of those styles. This two-disc compilation takes on the formidable task of creating a definitive Floyd collection. Though there's no chronological running order to give a sense of the group's development, there are plenty of key tracks from all the eras of Pink Floyd's career. We're given a healthy dose of material from the band's psychedelic '60s period, when they were spearheaded by the ultimate acid-damaged genius Syd Barrett (the loopy "Bike," the otherworldly "Astronomy Domine"). The most overtly progressive tendencies of '70s Floyd are aired on the glorious epic "Echoes," whose suite-like construction shows off both the band's technical facility and orchestration skills. Naturally, there are some cuts from the band's watershed album DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, one of the best-selling LPs of all time (the gospel-tinged "The Great Gig in the Sky," the near-funky capitalist plaint "Money"). Hardcore Floyd fans might object to the number of songs from the post-Roger Waters era, but even these less-celebrated tunes work in the overall historical context. While it's easy to quibble about the absence of various Floyd favorites (no "Interstellar Overdrive?"), there's so muchcrucial music on this collection that it's impossible to come away from it without a strong sense of what Pink Floyd such an important band. 25 Greatest Hot Fives And Hot Sevens, The (Original Mono Recordings 1926-1928)
Personnel: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet, cornet); Don Redman (vocals, alto saxophone, clarinet); Earl Hines (vocals, piano, celesta); Mancy Cara (vocals, banjo); May Alix (vocals); Jimmy Strong (tenor saxophone, clarinet); FredRobinson, Kid Ory, John Thomas (trombone); Johnny Dodds (clarinet); Lil Hardin Armstrong (piano); Johnny St. Cyr, Dave Wilborn (guitar, banjo); Lonnie Johnson (guitar); Pete Briggs (brass bass); Baby Dodds, Zutty Singleton (drums). Recorded in Chicago, Illinois between February 26, 1926 & December 12, 1928. Includes liner notes by Ray Crick. There are so many "greatest of" Armstrong compilations that the instinctive reaction upon seeing another is to roll the eyes. But HOT FIVES AND HOT SEVENS is truly outstanding. Concentrating solely on Armstrong's earliest work (before he became more of an entertainer than an artist), these revolutionary 1926-1928 sides find Satch at his innovative best, blazing new, and utterly unique trails into the world of modern music. Work from his Hot Fives group, like "Cornet Chop Suey," and "Heebie Jeebies" (featuring the first recorded scat vocal), alternates with such classic ragtime rave-ups las "Struttin' With Some Barbecue" and "Potato Head Blues." Armstrong's trumpet is like a beacon of light and, on such tracks as "I'm Not Rough" and "St. James Infirmary," his vocals are full of warmth, humor, rhythmic innovation, and a tinge of melancholy. The untouched original mono recordings make for a thoroughly pleasurable and genuine listening experience--with remarkably strong fidelity. In short, these are some of the best and most important recordings in the history of jazz. This "greatest" compilation lives up its claim. SKU: 1018680

Early Years Vol.1, The
Recorded in Los Angeles, California between July & December 1971. While it's a fascinating, ultimately satisfying listen, THE EARLY YEARS provides reassuring proof that Waits didn't start out as a genius. These 1971 demos of a 21-year-old Waits show a huge talent still in an embryonic state. All the elements of his artistry were solidly in place; the blues, jazz and beat poetry influences, the Hoagy Carmichael/Irving Berlin compositional sensibility, but they were only just beginning to gel. A couple of these tunes wouldturn up in revamped versions on Waits' 1973 debut, but most are transitional pieces that never would have seen the light of day, had Bizarre/Straight not delved into its archives. Waits neophytes should probably start with the official releases, but hardcore fans will be fascinating by this opportunity to see a world-class artist in a developmental stage. SKU: 1013353

Best Of Johnny Cash, The
Also available in a 3-pack with BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS and BITTER TEARS: BALLADS OF AMERICAN INDIANS. Personnel includes: Johnny Cash (vocals); Luther Perkins (guitar); Marshall Grant (bass); The Carter Family. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Includes original release liner notes by Joe Goldberg. A Johnny Cash best-of is a dubious proposition, as the singer/songwriter has turned out so many aesthetically and commercially successful tunes over the years that one would need several volumes to really do justice to such a project. RING OF FIRE does a fair job, though, spotlighting some of Cash's more spiritual and historical tunes in addition to his more mainstream country songs. Naturally, things kick off with the title tune, which was actually composed by Cash's wife June, and is one of Cash's most memorable (and ominous) recordings. Cash the strong, silent loner is presented on the exquisitely crafted "I Still MissSomeone," a transcendent ballad of heartbreak and disaffection. The spiritual side is represented by "Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)," and "Peace in the Valley," which are delivered with unparalleled conviction. Cash's avid interest in U.S. history is evidenced by tunes like "Remember The Alamo," where he shows his gift for bringing past events to life with vitality and style. SKU: 4123266

Hell Freezes Over
The Eagles: Don Felder (guitar, vocals); Glenn Frey(guitar, piano, keyboards, vocals); Joe Walsh (guitar, organ, vocals); Timothy B. Schmit (bass, vocals); Don Henley (drums, percussion, vocals). Additional personnel: Jay Oliver (keyboards); Timothy Drury (keyboards, vocals); John Corey (keyboards, guitar, vocals); Gary Grimm, Stan Lynch, Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Scott Crago (percussion, drums). Producers: Eagles, Elliot Scheiner, Rob Jacobs, Stan Lynch. Engineers: Rob Jacobs, Elliot Scheiner. Recorded at Warner Burbank Studios, Burbank, California; The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California; Sounds Interchange, Toronto, Canada. Includes liner notes by Sal Manna. HELL FREEZES OVER features four new studio tracks along with live material from the Eagles' return concert on MTV. "Love Will Keep Us Alive" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, and "Hotel California" was nominated for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. HELL FREEZES OVER was nominated for Best Pop Album. In a disappointing year of virtual reality performances, the Eagles' highly touted tour of America was a triumphant affirmation of enduring pop values, from a band that literally wrote the stylistic book on the singer-songwriter/rock'n'roll synthesis during the '70s. And as a band member jokes in a droll intro to their live set, "For the record, we never broke up, we just took a 14 year vacation." So now we have one of the most anticipated reunions in rock history. Certainly the internal pressures which tore the band apart haven't been papered over, judging from post-tour statements. From the outgrowth of all that creative tension is a remarkably tight live set, and a four-song prologue of new Eagles material, all as fresh and melodious as the originals. Not surprisingly, the strongest of the new tunes, "Get Over It" and "Learn To Be Still," come from collaborations involving Don Henley. The latter a dark folkish ballad offering reassurance in the face of life's small, bitter defeats, the former a four-on-the-floor, chicken fried rocker which decries the self-victimization of Americans. And their live rendition of classic tunes really hold up: all are brimming over with elements of country, R&B and blues, sedate, funky grooves, seamless five-part harmonies and sweet soaring guitar solos and duets--all the sounds and flourishes which add up to the Eagles trademark California rock. This Way [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Jewel (vocals, acoustic guitar); John Willis, B. James Lowry (acoustic guitar); Dann Huff, Jerry McPherson, Kenny Greeenberg (electric guitar); Jonathan Yudkin (mandolin, cello); The Nashville String Machine (strings); George Tidwell (trumpet); Tim Akers, Steve Nathan (keyboards); Jimmie Sloas (bass); Chris McHugh, Steve Brewster (drums); Eric Darken (percussion); Tedd T. (programming); Chris Rodriguez, Gene Miller, Bekka Bramlett (background vocals); Josh Freese. Recorded at Emerald Entertainment and Ocean Way Nashville, Tennessee; The Sound Kitchen, Franklin, Tennessee. The first three songs on Jewel Kilcher's first new album after a long layoff (her previous release was a 1999 Christmas album) embrace country, alternative rock, and a kind of John Cougar Mellencamp rock/country. She finds her own voice five songs in, with the tour de force "Do You Want to Play?" whose smart lyrics combined with a killer chorus are an immediate highlight of this self-assured collection. "Jesus Loves You" is a thoughtful meditation on consumerism that also manages to include the sassy couplet "It's not what I can do for anybody/It's what their body can do for me," underlining the singer's confident way with her subject matter. "Till We Run Out of Road" is that rock & roll staple, the road song, but she returns to form with "Everyone Needs Someone Sometime," a self-explanatory examination in which the singer's smart storytelling skills are on full display. With the inclusion of a couple of solo acoustic live tracks showcasing Jewel's raw talent and its firm rock backbone underlaying her maturing vocals, THIS WAY is a confident return to formfrom a singer many had previously written off as a one-hit wonder. City High (Expanded Version) [ECD]
City High: Robby Pardlo, Claudette Ortiz, Ryan Toby. Producers include: Salaam Remi, Wyclef Jean, Vidal Davis, Jerry "Wonder" Duplessis, Andre Harris. Engineers include: Serge "Sergical" Tsai, Robby Pardlo, Vidal Davis. "What Would You Do" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. With Wyclef Jean as one the executive producers, sonic resonance and resourcefulness is a given on CITY HIGH. What this two-guys-and-a-girl trio brings to the table as an essential asset is a vocal blend that capably mixes hip-hop and R&B while maintaining a soulfulness that's both commercially accessible and aesthetically substantive. While the mellow vibe and subtle groove that's the major undercurrent of most of these songs goes down easily, CITY HIGH isn't just smooth-sounding fluff. Lyrically speaking, there's something happening as well. A good example is "Why," where the protagonist has the presence of mind to ask his partner thetrenchant question "If we can't get along, what's the point in getting it on?" And any group that dedicates a tune ("Song For You") to late R&B great Donny Hathaway has got to have its head in the right place. SKU: 1065272

Legacy Vol.3, The (Why You Shouldn't Cry)
This is a collection of previously unreleased Chet Baker recordings made between 1979 and 1987, plus a tribute track recorded in 1993. Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet); Lillias White (vocals); Lee Konitz (alto saxophone); Wolfgang Lackerschmid (vibraphone, gong); Donald Johnston (piano); Larry Coryell, Nicola Stilo (guitar); Buster Williams, Gunter Lenz, Ron McClure (bass); Tony Williams, Jeff Hirshfield (drums). Recorded at Tonstudio Zuckerfabrik, Stuttgart, Germany on January 8 & 9 and in November 1979; Studio Loya, Bischofsmais, Germany from August 26-28, 1987; Systems Two, Brooklyn, New York in August 1993. Includes liner notes by Hans-Jurgen Schaal and Carol Baker. Digitally remastered by Wolfgang Meyscheider. These are among the last studio recordings of the late, legendary jazz trumpeter Chet Baker, recorded in Germany in 1979 and 1987. Featured prominently is the vibraphone playing of Wolfgang Lackerschid, who became a friend and something of a musical soulmate to Baker while in Europe. These performances arein duo, trio, quartet and quintet contexts, with Baker's trumpet commanding (though not monopolizing) center stage. His playing, heard today, is still haunting and beautiful--the epitome of grace and "cool." Baker attains empathy with a somewhat unlikely group: Tony Williams (who in the '60s played with Miles Davis), Buster Williams and Larry Coryell (one of the fathers of jazz-rock fusion). As a bonus, there is "Chet's Ballad (Why Shouldn't You Cry)," a posthumous tribute tune featuring Lee Konitz and the voice of Lillas White, recorded in 1993. All in all, a lovely disc--invaluable to Baker fans and those who want to check out one of jazz's best players and most unusual characters (see the documentary film "Let's Get Lost.") Two thumbs way up. SKU: 1046271

Baby Breeze
This 1999 reissue contains five bonus tracks not included on the original release. Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, flugelhorn); Frank Strozier (alto saxophone, flute); Phil Urso (tenor saxophone); Bob James, Hal Galper, Bobby Scott (piano); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Michael Fleming (bass); Charlie Rice (drums). Producer: Bobby Scott. Reissue producers: Bryan Koniarz, Jerry Rappaport. Recorded at A&R Studios, New York, New York on November 14 & 20, 1964. Originally released on Limelight (86003). Includes liner notes by Chet Baker and Dan Morgenstern. Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (PolyGram Studios). This is part of Verve's Verve By Request series. After a five year European sojourn (including time in an Italian jail) cool jazz trumpeter Chet Baker returnedto the States in good form to record this unusual date for the Limelight label in 1964. For starters, he was playing flugelhorn, an instrument he'd recently acquired to replace a stolen trumpet in France. Secondly, the date was produced by Bobby Scott, the English composer of "A Taste Of Honey," included here as a bonus track. Baker sings the folk-like melody with conviction, accompanied only by Scott himself on piano. In fact, Baker's plaintive vocals on this tune and others like Mel Torme's "Born To be Blue" and Ray Noble's "The Touch Of Your Lips" represent his best singing on record in a decade. The session is smartly divided between these minimally accompanied vocals--the understated guitarist Kenny Burrell makes a welcome appearance on some--and straight-ahead instrumentals with full combo including the fine altoist Frank Strozier. The rich-toned flugelhorn suits Baker's characteristic lyricism and he negotiates pianist Hal Galper's originals with aplomb. SKU: 1002638

Nearly a decade in the making, this 4 CD package is everything an Alicephile could want. Demos, unreleased tracks, alternate takes, live material, and pre-Alice are all here. All the artist's eras are covered in depth. Cooper completists will marvel at the 1965-1967 tunes (pre-Alice groups The Spiders and The Nazz). This is followed by mandatory classics such as "Eighteen," "School's Out," "Billion Dollar Babies" and "Under My Wheels" (another version also appears with Axl, Slash and Izzy from Guns n' Roses). "I Love The Dead," and "Cold Ethyl" also flesh out the 70's era material. The glam metal explosion in the 80's helped resurge Alice's career, as "He's Back (The Man Behind The Mask)" and "Poison" introduced Cooper to a new generation. Guest appearances by Ozzy Osbourne, Nicki Sixx, Rob Zombie and Chris Cornell round out the 90's. THE LIFE is a must for Cooper diehards, and is recommended for everyone else. SKU: 5068250

Let Go [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Avril Lavigne (vocals, guitar); Evan Taubenfeld (guitar); Mark Spicoluk (bass); Matthew Brann (drums). Producers: Clif Magness, The Matrix, Curt Frasca, Peter Zizzo. Avril Lavigne was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. LET GO was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. "Complicated" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Song Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "Sk8er Boi" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Headstrong and fiercely independent, 17-year-old Avril Lavigne makes a huge splash with her debut LET GO, a collection of confessional songs with attitude reminiscent of fellow prodigy/Canuck Alanis Morissette. Collaborating with producer/songwriter Clif Magness, Lavigne avoids the credibility pitfalls plaguing the brigade of bubble-gum divas that ruled the charts in the late '90s and early millennium by penning her own material. Blessed with a voice that makes her sound ten years older, the self-professed tomboy assuredly asserts herself in relationships (the sing-along breakout hit "Complicated"),admits to emotional vulnerability (a stark "Naked"), and delivers a breezy summation of her life and dreams (the pop manna "My World"). Aided by a simple three-piece back-up band Lavigne and her stellar debut could very well end up picking up where Alanis and JAGGED LITTLE PILL left off. SKU: 1073625
