CSN
Crosby, Stills & Nash: David Crosby (vocals, acoustic guitar); Stephen Stills (vocals, guitar, piano, timbales); Graham Nash (vocals, piano, harmonica). Additional personnel: Joe Vitale (piano, organ, flute, drums, tympani, vibes, percussion); Craig Doerge (piano); Tim Drummond, Gerald Johnson, George Perry (bass); Russ Kunkel (drums, congas); Ray Barretto (congas). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Arguably the last great Crosby Stills and Nash album, CSN was recorded before drugs and interpersonal squabbles wreaked irreparable damage to the group. This creative swan song is probably the trio's darkest, most introspective record, full of soul-searching ballads that detail the questions these men were asking themselves and each other about their livesat the time. In true democratic fashion, all three members are well-represented by their contributions here. Nash provides one of his most memorable tunes, the elliptical minor-key ballad "Just A Song Before I Go," which contributes nicely to the moody feel of the record. Stills' "Fair Game" is an effective, Latin-tinged song about rejection and revenge. Crosby is at his best on the piano-based "Anything At All," a darkly humorous tune full of self-doubt and self-effacement, all the more poignant for its naked honesty. SKU: 1009830

ESP [Remastered]
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Herbie Hancock (piano); Ron Carter (acoustic bass); Tony Williams (drums). Producer: Irving Townshend. Reissue producer: Mike Berniker. Recorded at Columbia Studios, Los Angeles, California from January 20-22, 1965. Originally released on Columbia (9150). Includes liner notes by BobBelden. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technologyby Mark Wilder and Rob Schwarz (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). As Miles Davis' music evolved in the early '60s, he worked through aspects of his old repertoire, show tunes and the music of Gil Evans with a series of transitional bands, whose members dated from the late '50s on up. As he gradually assembled his dream band, the music began to take on a more modernist perspective, but it wasn't until he added saxophonist Wayne Shorter that this quintet finally gelled. E.S.P. marks the beginning of the quintet's collective evolution toward a new brand of modernism: freely inflected, with plenty of room for collective interplay, but still deeply rooted in chordal harmony and swing. After working with Hank Mobley, George Coleman and Sam Rivers, Miles finally got his man when Wayne Shorter left the Jazz Messengers to begin a five year stint with the trumpeter in 1964. The moody impressionistic chords Shorter penned to open "Iris" signal a new texture and harmonic palette for Miles' band, and his serpentine melodic invention, as epitomized by the title cut, acted as a creative catalyst for the entire band. Shorter went on to become the band's de facto musical director, but on E.S.P. Davis, Hancock and Carter all make significant contributions. "Eighty-One" presages Miles' growing interest in funky, blues-based materials, while "Agitation" features an evocative intro by 19-year old Tony Williams, already moving beyond simple choruses into layers of meter and texture, and followed by Davis, Shorter and Hancock's own jittery coiled solos. Summer In The City (Live In New York)
Personnel: Joe Jackson (vocals, piano); Graham Maby (vocals, bass); Gary Burke (drums). Recorded live in New York, New York in August 1999. Joe Jackson has proven himself to be a label-defying artist. Emerging from the early '80s "New Wave/Angry Young Man" milieu, Jackson has consistently pushed the boundaries of pop music. He's run the gamut of pop: from brisk, tuneful rock & roll, to sophisticated jazz/classic American Songbook fusion, to symphonic forms. Here, Jackson gets back to basics, just his vocals and piano, bass and drums, but retains his trademark wit, urbanity and intelligence. He wrings Dobie Gray's '60s hit "The In Crowd" for all it's worth, complete with delicious blues-drenched, swinging piano, then segues into 1989's sardonic "Down to London." He wows the crowd with new reflective versions of his old favorites ("Be My Number Two," "It's Different For Girls") and enthusiastic versions of choice covers (The Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer In the City," a wistful vocal version of " Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo"). SUMMER has a full yetuncluttered sound, thoroughly professional yet relaxed--as if this trio were playing after-hours in a club for a select group of friends. SKU: 1032785

Rancid
Rancid: Tim Armstrong, Lars Frederiksen (vocals, guitar); Matt Freeman (vocals, bass); Brett Reed (drums). You don't have to be a Rancid fan to acknowledge that the band lives and dies by the punk ethic of playing every note like it's going to be its last. You'll find one hundred and ten percent attitude and music that's as honest as you can get on RANCID (not to be confused with the band's self-titled 1993 release). RANCID finds the band leaning away from its previous ska tendencies, and throwing itself head first into a full-on punk rock onslaught that should have fans of the early Clashseeking out the nearest mosh pit. "Let Me Go" has a chorus that sticks to you like peanut butter on the gums, while "I Am Forever" captures the essence and raw power of The Descendents. There's barely a pause between the 22 blistering tracks here, and it's clear the band intended it that way. "Rwanda" and "Radio Havana" offer huge sing-along choruses, while "Antennas" is unarguably the most melodic track in the set. But don't think that Rancid's getting soft; amid these glorious melodic moments, there's more than enough hardcore here to piss off your whole neighborhood. SKU: 1039018

Night At Red Rocks, A (Deluxe Edition)
Full title: A Night At Red Rocks With The Colorado Symphony Orchestra: Deluxe Edition. This deluxe edition features, for the first time, the entire unedited live performance of the concert. Includes a 28-pagecolor booklet. The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward, John Lodge, Ray Thomas, Graeme Edge. Addditional personnel includes: Larry Baird (arranger, conductor); Bias Boshell, Paul Bliss (keyboards); Gordon Marshall (drums, percussion); The Colorado Symphony Orchestra. Recorded live at Red Rocks Amphitheater, Denver, Colorado on September 9, 1992. Includes liner notes by Bill DeYoung. This 1992 live recording represents the closing of a circle. Life for the post-Denny Laine Moodies began with the orchestrated rock of DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED, as prog-rock history was made. 25 years later, with decades of hit albums behind them, the band finds itself once again backed by an orchestra for A NIGHT AT RED ROCKS. With both Mike Pinder and Patrick Moraz long gone, the group is down to a quartet here, augmented by session musicians and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. The 1969 live recording CAUGHT LIVE proved that the band never needed an orchestra to reproduce its lush sound, but it certainly doesn't hurt. The marriage of the Moodies' progressive pop-rock with the Colorado Symphony's elegant accompaniment seems a natural one. With as many hits as the band had behind them by this time, it's hard for the show to be full of anything else. The twist is that the set is still almost equally divided between pre- and post-comeback hits. SKU: 1081813

I Feel Like Singing Today
Full performer name: Jim Lauderdale/Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys. Personnel: Jim Lauderdale, Ralph Stanley, Ralph Stanley II (vocals, guitar); James Price (vocals, fiddle, mandolin); Jack Cooke (vocals); James Alan Shelton (guitar); Steve Sparkman (banjo). Producer: Jim Lauderdale & TheClinch Mountain Boys. Recorded at Maggard Sound Studio, Big Stone Gap, Virgina. I FEEL LIKE SINGING TODAY was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. An unlikely combination? A leading light of the alternative country/"Americana" scene making an album with a man who is, after Bill Monroe, the greatest of all bluegrass singer/musicians? Not really, when one considers the alt-country scene reaches further back to the roots than mainstream country, and Stanley, while staunchly sticking by bluegrass, has been receptive to working with younger musicians. (Bob Dylan considers his recording a duet with Stanley a highlight of his career.) Essentially, FEEL LIKE SINGING is Lauderdale adapting his earthy style to Stanley's traditional bluegrass sound, as opposed to Stanley adapting to Lauderdale's eclectic style. But that's fine, as Lauderdale sounds perfectly natural, his deep, worldly drawl melding beautifully with Stanley's soulful high lonesome tenor. He contributes several originals, many of which sound like they could have been written in the '40s, except for "Highway Through My Home," which deals with the cost of "progress." Many songs are devout (but not preachy or judgmental) gospel, like the Lauderdale originals "Like Him" and "Another Sinner's Prayer," and the standard "This World Is Not My Home." SKU: 1025977

Boyz II Men II
Boyz II Men: Shawn Stockman, Michael S. McCary, Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris (vocals). Additional personnel: Tamara Spinner (vocals); Troy Taylor, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis (various instruments); Babyface (guitar, synthesizer); Peter Moore, Shanon (guitar); William Henderson, Mark Cargill (violin); Kevan Torfeh (cello); Tim Kelley (keyboards, bass, drums); Bob Robinson (piano, keyboards); Reggie Hamilton (acoustic & electric basses); Rayford Griffin (drums, programming). Producers include: Dallas Austin, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, L.A. Reid, Tony Rich. II won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, and "I'll Make Love To You" won Grammys for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "I'll Make Love To You" was also nominated for Record Of The Year. Philadelphia's Boyz II Men are a vocal quartet steeped in a number of R&B and soul traditions. Not only do they have the sizable legacy of soul singers from the City of Brotherly Love to draw on for inspiration, they've also surpassed mentors Bell Biv Devoe as the premier Pop/R&B act in the land, filling the shoes of such dapper hit-makers as New Edition and The Jacksons. For II, their long-awaited sophomore effort, Boyz II Men (Shawn Stockman, Michael McCary, Nathan and Wanya Morris) rightfully abstained from fiddling with their distinctive vocal sound. Consequently, their harmonic interplay has never seemed more polished. Not only do they kindle soulful flames under pureromantic ballads like "I'll Make Love To You," but they are able to stake a claim to the Beatles' "Yesterday" by placing their own distinct vocal stamp on it. They can also just as easily kick their harmonies onto the dance floor. The Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis produced "All Around The World," with its funky French intro and Daddy-O samples, is a testament to that. The track also serves as further proof that in today's world of pop craftsmanship, Boyz II Men have all the bases covered. SKU: 1001043

Life With The Lions (Unfinished Music No.2)
Full title: Unfinished Music #2: Life With The Lions. Personnel: John Lennon (acoustic guitar); Yoko Ono (vocals); John Tchicai (saxophone); John Stevens (percussion); Mal Evans. Reissue producers: Yoko Ono, Rob Stevens. Recorded live at Lady Mitchell Hall, Cambridge, England on March 2, 1969 and at Queen Charlotte Hospital, London, England on November 4 & 25, 1968. This album, subtitled UNFINISHED MUSIC NO. 2, is linked to its predecessor (TWO VIRGINS: UNFINISHED MUSIC NO. 1) by name only. Though both offer recordings that found John Lennon happily stepping into the avant-garde world of his paramour, this album departs from the sound collage approach of their debut and instead offers a range of real time recordings. The improvisational 26-minute "Cambridge 1969" is from a live performance and primarily features Yoko Ono's vocals and Lennon's feedback guitar. Four subsequent pieces (originally comprising side two of the album) were recorded at the Queen Charlotte Hospital in London. Yoko occupied a room there at a critical juncture in a difficult pregnancy (ultimately suffering a miscarriage) and John took up on the floor beside her. This documents their desire to draw poetry and emotional resonance from their life together as well as to make art from their surroundings. The five minutes of "Baby's Heartbeat" followed by the "Two Minutes Silence" may not be a riveting traditional listening experience, but itis conceptually moving. SKU: 1000578

Best Of Sonny Rollins, The
Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Donald Byrd (trumpet); J.J. Johnson (trombone); Wynton Kelly, Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk (piano); Gene Ramey, Paul Chambers, Doug Watkins, Wilbur Ware (bass); Max Roach, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Compilation producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded in Hackensack, New Jersey between December 16, 1956 and September 22, 1957; live at the Village Vanguard, New York, New York on November 3, 1957. All tracks are mono unless otherwise specified. The sidemen (Horace Silver, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Wilbur Ware, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones...) and the time period (1957) should give listeners an idea what to expect. There are a few standards, one tune each by Miles and Monk, and four Rollins originals. Of these, "Decision" is textbook Blue Note hard bop, a sneaky half-time stroll in a minor key. "Why Don't I" has the tenor and the trombone (J.J. Johnson) hitting boppish accents on the head before falling into straight-ahead blowing. "Striver's Row," is a tenor/bass/drums trio recorded live at the Village Vanguard, and finds Rollins utterly shredding thechord changes, which are not unrelated to Charlie Parker's "Confirmation." "Sonnymoon For Two," also from the Vanguard, is a simple but enduring riff on the blues. Usually one expects a "best of" collection to look superficially at several years of an artist's work. But in this case the vicissitudes of careers and record contracts leave us with a particularly captivating look at the breadth of one musician's output over a period of less than a year. SKU: 1004835

Hard Promises [Remastered]
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Tom Petty (vocals, guitar, piano, bass); Benmont Tench (vocals, piano, organ); Stan Lynch (vocals, drums); Mike Campbell (guitar, auto-harp, accordion, harmonium, bass); Ron Blair (bass). Additional personnel: Stevie Nicks (vocals); A. Bugs Weidel (piano); Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Phil Jones (percussion). Recorded at Sound City and Cherokee, Van Nuys, California; Goodnight, Los Angeles, California. Digitally remastered by Joe Gastwirt (OceanView Digital Mastering, Los Angeles, California). This is where Petty's Dylan influence begins to rear its head. He made his name as an all-American, Byrds-inspired rock & roller, but on HARD PROMISES Petty began to explore a more reflective style, leaning on the softerside of his folk-rock roots. This is no NEBRASKA-there are plenty of spirited rockers and classy pop tunes-but Petty does sound like he's been spending some time with BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME. There are sharply observed character studies of hard-luck and no-luck guys ("Something Big," "Nightwatchman"), urgent power-pop declarations of romantic desperation ("A Thing About You") and even some light-hearted socio-cultural observations ("King's Road"). HARD PROMISES is Petty's first step towards the eclecticism that would mark his later work, and it's easily his most underrated album. SKU: 1057317

Another Time Another Place
Personnel: Bryan Ferry (vocals, harmonica, organ, keyboards); John Porter, David O'List (guitar); John Wetton (fiddle, bass); Ruan O'Lochlainn (alto saxophone); Chris Mercer (tenor saxophone); Henry Lowther (trumpet); Chris Pyne (trombone); Paul Thompson (drums); Vicki Brown, Helen Chappelle, Barry St. John, Liza Strike (background vocals). Recorded in 1974. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. He's got them old foppish fin-de-siecle ennui blues again, mama. Ferry's second solo album is, rather explicitly, These Foolish Things Part Deux, at least conceptually. Once again, he covers--make that radically re-invents--a wildly eclectic bunch of songs, from "You Are My Sunshine" to Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World." The results are still somewhat variable, given Ferry's vocal limitations, but the songs here seem more suited to his traditional mien of lounge lizard angst, and on balance ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE is probably superior to its predecessor. For example, Ferry's take on Dobie Gray's"The In Crowd" makes that song's undercurrent of aggression palpable in a far more believable way than Gray's deliberately likeable original. Other high points include a commendably unsentimental version of Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away," which works its way to a big, honking R&B finale, and a surprisingly touching C&W-like version of the aforementioned "You Are My Sunshine." Nine Maidens, The
The cover of JohnRenbourn's THE NINE MAIDENS--a white background with a photo of standing stones at sunrise--looks like it belongs on an ECM avant-jazz or Windham Hill new age release. Frankly, the contents could pass on either label's roster. The strictly instrumental solo-acoustic guitar pieces on THE NINE MAIDENS are Renbourn at his least traditional. To varying extents, Renbourn's previous solo records have all introduced jazz and world music elements into early music and traditional British folk. But Renbourn's playing on THE NINE MAIDENS owes at least as much in spots to Django Reinhardt as it does to Davey Graham. Even strictly traditional material like the closing title suite has a remarkably jazzy quality, and the dazzling "Variations on My Lady Carey's Dompe" is simply staggering in its complexity. Fantastic material, beautifully played. SKU: 6579869

Rock Bottom
This 1974 release was Robert Wyatt's first album after his accident: a fall from a window that left him a paraplegic. Over the years he has eloquently expressed how that accident saved his life as an artist, forcing him to reconsider his approach to music. Already a composer and singer of remarkable character (important previous works include the first three albums by his band Soft Machine), Wyatt shifted his role as a traditional trap-kit drummer to playing an assortment of tabletop percussion,as well as keyboards. Wyatt also has the advantage of working with highly sympathetic players, including, among others, Hugh Hopper, Fred Frith and Gary Windo. These musicians effectively create a highly personal world that seems to perfectly articulate Wyatt's musical vision. Gorgeous and evocative, Wyatt's music is practically a genre unto itself. Listen Like Thieves
INXS: Kirk Pengilly (vocals, guitar, saxophone); Michael Hutchence (vocals); Andrew Farriss (guitar, keyboards); Tim Farriss (guitar, synthesizer); Garry Gary Beers (bass); Jon Farriss (drums). Additional personnel: Ray Cooper (percussion); Ann O'Dell (string arrangement). Recorded at Rhinoceros Studios, Sydney, Australia. SHABOOH SHOOBAH and THE SWING may have produced college radio hits like "The One Thing" and "The Original Sin," but it took 1985's LISTEN LIKE THIEVES for INXS to make a true commercial breakthrough in the US. The album leads off with three killer singles, the still-remarkable whiplash dance swagger of "What You Need" and the more anthemic rockers "Listen Like Thieves" and "This Time." On the first of those in particular, singer Michael Hutchence finally perfects the postmodern Mick Jagger vibe he'd been trying to achieve since 1980's INXS, and the band was rewarded with a substantiallylarger American audience, a commercial gain solidified on the next album, 1987's mega-platinum KICK. LISTEN LIKE THIEVES didn't reach that level of marketplace success because the songwriting quality dips a bit after that impressive opening stretch, but it's nonetheless a fine commercial pop album. Puttin' On The Style (The Greatest Hits Of Lonnie Donegan)
The impact of American folk, blues, and rock & roll on the British music scene of the 1960s is inestimable. One of the catalysts of this musical transference was Lonnie Donegan, whose hopped-up, folky sound, which came to be known as "skiffle," inspired legions of youngsters to form their own bands. Donegan adapted American folk and country tunes to his acoustic guitar, but backed himself with a bassist, washboard player, and drummer. The result was a rootsy, propulsive sound that brought the simplicity offolk together with the driving rhythms of up-tempo bluegrass and rockabilly. PUTTIN' ON THE STYLE: THE GREATEST HITS, with its generous, well-selected 25 tracks, is the definitive Donegan collection. Arranged chronologically, the set begins with his 1955 version of Leadbelly's "Rock Island Line" and includes traditional songs ("Tom Dooley," "Michael Row the Boat"), early country (the Carter Family's "My Dixie Darling"), and Woodie Guthrie tunes ("Gamblin' Man"), among others. Unlike anything heard in Britain at the time, Donegan's raucous, energetic sound influenced the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, and the Beatles (John Lennon's first band, the Quarrymen, played skiffle). Donegan was England's first rock & roll star, and for this reason alone THE GREATEST HITS receives historical and musical honors. SKU: 1080589
