Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life, The
Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar, synthesizers); Ike Willis, Mike Keneally (guitar, synthesizers); Kurt McGettrick (contrabass clarinet, baritone & bass saxophones); Paul Carman (soprano, alto & baritone saxophones); Albert Wing (tenor saxophone); Walt Fowler (trumpet, flugelhorn, synthesizers); Bruce Fowler (trombone); Scott Thunes (Mini-Moog synthesizer, electric bass); Bobby Martin (keyboards); Chad Wackerman (drums, percussion). Digitally remastered by Bob Stone (1993). Recorded live in 1988. One of three collections from the 1988 world tour, THE BEST BAND YOU NEVER HEARD IN YOUR LIFE is a portrait of one of Zappa's most accomplished bands. Unfortunately, this band self-destructed in mid-tour and never completed their scheduled appearances. Hence, the title stands for the fans that couldn't see this amazing group live. The vocals of Ike Willis and Mike Keneally, the rhythmic acrobatics of Chad Wakerman, Ed Mann and Scott Thunes, the powerfulhorn section including the Fowler brothers, keyboardist/vocalist Bobby Martin--it all adds up to one of the most musically agile bands Zappa ever commanded. There are the usual Zappa favorites on disc one with "Cosmic Debris" and "Zomby Woof." The band also gets to flex its muscles on the instrumentals "Zoot Allures" and "Sofa 1#." Disc two captures all the zany behavior that could be preserved on tape as bizarre covers of "Purple Haze" and "Sunshine Of Your Love" start things off. Snippets of "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," "The Godfather Theme" and "Bonanza" escalate into a diatribe by right-wing character Brother A. West and several songs denouncing televangelist Jimmy Swaggart. The finale of "Stairway To Heaven" ties everything back together in grand Zappa style. SKU: 3100729

Sun Ra & His Arkestra: Sun Ra (chant vocals, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ, ARP synthesizer, Mini-Moog synthesizer, bells); James Jacson (chant vocals, flute, oboe, bassoon); Marshall Allen (alto saxophone, flute, oboe); John Gilmore (tenor saxophone); Danny Thompson (baritone saxophone, flute); Julian Pressley (baritone saxophone); Michael Ray, Eddie Gale (trumpet); Disco Kid, Dale Williams (guitar); Richard Williams (bass); Artaukatune (congas, timpani); Lugman Ali, Michael Anderson (percussion). Reissue producer: Jerry Gordon. Recorded at Blank Tapes Studios, New York, New York on July 17, 1978. Includes liner notes by John Diliberto and Tom Buchler. All tracks have been digitally remastered. By the time this album was recorded in 1978, Sun Ra and his Arkestra had been living in Philadelphia for a decade. They journeyed to New York City to record this project for the Philly Jazz Label. The rhythmic bearing of the music, as well as Sun Ra's use of a FenderRhodes electric piano (especially on the nine-and-a-half minute "Twin Stars Of Thence"), align this music with some of the post-BITCHES BREW releases by Miles Davis. Ra even brought along two electric guitarists for the date, Dale Williams and Disco Kid. As late '70s fusion-flavored jazz goes, this stands up extremely well, with its rhythmic sensibilities harking back with gusto to earlier decades in the century. The album closer is the chant-filled "There Are Other Worlds (They Have Not Told You Of)"--11 minutes of ever-undulating and gently propulsive groove. Ra's piano playing is gorgeously ethereal on this number. SKU: 1044935

Endless Harmony
The re-release of this CD features new packaging but contains the same tracks as the original. All tracks are previously unreleased except for "Surfer Girl" and "Endless Harmony." The Beach Boys include: Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Bruce Johnston, Al Jardine, Mike Love, Blondie Chaplin, Ricky Fataar (vocals, various instruments). Additional personnel includes: Ron Altbach (vocals); Jerry Donahue (guitar); Rick Henn, Daryl Dragon (piano); Carlos Munoz (keyboards); Van Dyke Parks (sound effects). Producers include: Brian Wilson, Rick Henn, The Beach Boys, Bruce Johnson, Carl Wilson. Compilation producer: Alan Boyd. Recorded in 1963-1980. Includes liner notes by Brad Elliott. Digitally remastered by Dan Hirsch (DigiPrep). The aptly titled ENDLESS HARMONY is a delightful, at times even giddy hybrid--equal parts "best of", "unplugged" recording, live album and rarities collection--by that most American of groups, The Beach Boys. Brian Wilson penned some of pop music's biggest hits as well as producing the band in his own lush and tasteful interpretation of Phil Spector's "wall of sound." Many of these deep, luxurious tunes ("God Only Knows," "California Girls," "Darlin'," "Help Me Rhonda" and the pocket symphony "GoodVibrations") are included here in alternate versions. For a glimpse into the Beach Boys' hectic days of early touring there is a five-song medley of their surfin' smashes taken from a campus concert. A peek behind the scenes into the band's creative process is afforded with demos and snippets of "Break Away," "Heroes and Villains" and "I'm In Great Shape," the latter two tunes originally slated for release on the most famous rock album that never really was, SMILE. The Beach Boys are a world unto themselves, firmly rooted in pop music tradition but at their best, virtually inimitable. Yet their world is an embracing one, and ENDLESS HARMONY is evidence of the group's good humor, boundless ambition and timeless quality. SKU: 6547400

Half Hour Of Power
Sum 41: Bizzy D., Hot Chocolate (vocals, guitar); Cone (bass); Stevo 32 (drums). Before these pop-punkers made their way onto the album charts by way of 2001's ALL KILLER NO FILLER, they released the aptly entitled HALF HOUR OF POWER. Though this disc is occupied by the same post-GREEN DAY sound that would soon bring the band fame, HALF HOUR opens up with a satirical heavy metal instrumental, showcasing the sense of humor that's one of SUM 41's most valuable assets. The band'sother assets, hummable melodies that ride atop a bed of churning guitars and pounding drums, and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of youthful energy, are present throughout this release. From "Machine Gun" to "Another Time Around," Sum 41 manages to be both pithy and powerful, leavening their punk attack with just the right amount of pop sweetness (well, relative sweetness anyway). Elton John [Remastered]
The 1996 reissue of ELTON JOHN includes three songs that were not on the original album: "Bad Side Of The Moon" (originally the B-side to the "Border Song" single), and both sides of the "Grey Seal"/"Rock N Roll Madonna" single. This is an earlier version of "Grey Seal" than on the GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD album. The album has been digitally remastered by the original producer, Gus Dudgeon, using original master tapes and digital processing equipment at 20-bit resolution. According to Dudgeon (ICE newsletter, January 1996), the results are "100% better" than the two previous American CD issues. Personnel includes: Elton John (vocals, piano, harpsichord); Paul Buckmaster (arranger, cello); Clive Hicks (acoustic guitar, guitar, 12-string guitar); Frank Clark (acoustic guitar, acoustic bass); Colin Green (guitar, Spanish guitar); Caleb Quaye, Roland Harker, Alan Parker (guitar); Skaila Kanga (harp); Brian Dee (organ); Diana Lewis (Moog synthesizer); Dave Richmond, Alan Weighll, Les Hurdie (bass); Barry Morgan, Terry Cox (drums); Dennis Lopez, Tex Navarra (percussion); Barbara Moore, Madeline Bell, Leslie Duncan, Kay Garner, Tony Burrows, Tony Hazzard, Roger Cook (background vocals). Originally released on MCA. Includes liner notes by John Tobler and Gus Dudgeon. This is part of Rocket's Elton John: The Classic Years series. Elton John's second album was his first to be released in the U.S., and the difference between it and its predecessor, EMPTY SKY, is palpable and immediate. ELTON JOHN opens with "Your Song," a halting ballad that is one of the most moving love songs in the modern pop canon, and goes on to include such memorable cuts as the haunting "Sixty Years On" and the proto-Elton rocker "Take Me To The Pilot." It was after hearing the demo for "Your Song" that Steve Brown, the song-plugger who produced the first album, suggested John find a proper producer for the follow-up. Thus began John's fruitful association with Gus Dudgeon and arranger Paul Buckmaster (who'd previously collaborated on David Bowie's "Space Oddity"). On ELTON JOHN, they came up with a spare orchestral sound that surrounds the singer and his piano with dashes of both classical and rock guitar, synthesizers, carefully arranged drums and searing strings. This wasn't all-out pop yet, but rather a striking and singular brand offolk-rock. "Take Me To The Pilot" shows flashes of John's rocking future ("Bennie And The Jets" descended from it), and "No Shoe Strings On Louise" is Rolling Stonesy country-rock that nearly anticipates EXILE ON MAIN STREET. More typical for this session is "I Need You To Turn To," another love song that finds lyricist Bernie Taupin in an unusually direct mode, and features a beautiful harpsichord melody from John. Greatest Hits (+DVD)
This first single disc overview of Neil Young's eclectic career concentrates on the Canadian artist's 1970's output. In addition, the first three tracks are culled from 1969's 'Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere' - and the 1969 CSN&Y hit-single 'Ohio'is included. Young's 1980's material is represented by the politically charged 'Rockin' In The Free World'; whilst 1992's 'Harvest Moon' is the only track to be taken from the following decade. This bonus DVD includes the whole album in "super-saturated DVD-stereo" as well as two music videos and lyrics for each track. SKU: 6575745

I
The Magnetic Fields: Stephin Merritt (vocals, various instruments); John Woo (guitar, banjo); Sam Davol (cello); Claudia Gonson (piano, drums). The Magnetic Fields: John Woo (guitar, banjo, sitar); Sam Davol (cello); Claudia Gonson (piano, harpsichord, drums, percussion, background vocals). Engineers: Charles Newman; Ravi Krishnaswami. Recording information: 1998 - 2004. Five years after the lauded triple-album 69 LOVE SONGS, Stephin Merritt once again dons his Magnetic Fields hat for I, his second release on Warner's Nonesuch imprint (his first being the PIECES OF April soundtrack, released under his own name). Like LOVE SONGS, I has a consistent theme--in this case, each song begins with the letter "I" and features lead vocals by Merritt (who's known for farming out singing chores). This narrative, confessional setting allows Merritt to present some of his most intimate and wry compositions, such as the string-laden "I Don't Believe You," thepiano-driven "I Thought You Were My Boyfriend," and the Victorian "In an Operetta." Although I largely sticks to its predecessor's romantic lyrical focus, its sound is notably different, particularly in its lack of synthesizers. By utilizing mostly acoustic instruments and leaving behind the cold sheen of electronics, Merritt makes his remarkable songwriting skills that much more apparent, resulting in one of the finest albums of his prolific career. Vagabond Heart
Personnel includes: Rod Stewart (vocals); Waddy Wachtel, Paul Jackson Jr., Steve Lukather, Tim Pierce, Robin Le Mesurier, Jeff Golub, Dan Huff (guitar); Kevin Weed (bagpipes); Rick Braun (trumpet); David Paich, Patrick Leonard, Chuck Kentis, Richard Cottle, Kevin Savigar (keyboards); Steve Lindsey, Khris Kellow, Steve Porcaro (synthesizer); Bernard Edwards, Carmine Rojas, Neil Stubenhouse (bass); Jeff Porcaro, Tony Brock, John Robinson, Rave Calmer, Jim Keltner (drums); Louis Conte, Chris Trujillo, Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Angela Winbush, The Waters, Joe Turano, John Batdorf, Randel Crenshaw, Gary Falcone, Roger Freeland, Garry Cook, Lionel Conway, Arnols Stiefel and Robert Jackson (background vocals). Producers include: Bernard Edwards, Trevor Horn, Patrick Leonard, Lenny Waronker, Richard Perry. Recorded at Cherokee Studio, Conway Studio and Sarm Studio, London, England. When Rod Stewart released his eighteenth album VAGABOND HEART, he'd hit a few milestones in his personal life. In addition to getting hitched to model Rachel Hunter, Stewart was faced with the passing of his father. The choice of material on this record found Rod the Mod looking back at his life and career through the power of song. The bagpipes on the drinking-song ambiance of "Rhythm Of My Heart" was an obvious nod to his Scottish heritage, and the cheeriness of "The Motown Song" found Stewart harmonizing (appropriately enough) with the Temptations, expressing his fondness for the R&B of his youth. Covers of Robbie Robertson's "Broken Arrow," Van Morrison's "Have I Told You Lately" andthe Philly soul ballad "You Are Everything" gave the normally ribald singer a chance to express his sentimental side, no doubt prompted by his recent marriage. In going back to the past, Stewart made a wise choice in getting Tina Turner to play Tammy Terrell to his Marvin Gaye, as the two go toe-to-toe in an extremely fun reading of "It Takes Two." Ming
MING is considered, along with HOME, the seminal David Murray Octet recording. The 25-year old Murray leads an ace group through a thrilling tour of hard bop, free-form, and ballads. Murray and his players (Henry Threadgill, Anthony Davis, and Wilbur Morris to name a few of the heavyweights) deftly illustrate that the entire legacy of jazz is avant-garde in nature. The high-octane "The Fast Life" introduces complex group arrangements over Murray's masterful phrasingon the tenor saxophone. The title track, a ballad dedicated to Murray's wife, boasts elegant trombone playing by George Lewis while "Dewey's Circle" has some truly amazing ensemble improvisation. MING is the meeting point at which the avant-garde collides with melody and tradition to make a simply classic jazz recording. SKU: 1036172

Slim Shady LP, The (Clean Version)
Personnel includes: Eminem, Kristie Abete Swift, Dina Rae (vocals); Richard "Segal" Huredia (spoken vocals); Jeff Bass (various instruments); Mel-Man, DJ Head, Denine Porter (drum programming); Paul "Bunyan" Rosenberg, Zoe Winkler, Marky Bass, Aristotle, Royce Da 5-9. Producers include: Dr. Dre, M. Mathers, Marky Bass, Jeff Bass, Mel Man. Engineers include: Blumpy, Aaron Lepley, Alan Mason. THE SLIM SHADY LP won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "My Name Is" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. You'll need a well-developed sense of humor to fully appreciate the debut of Eminem a.k.a. Slim Shady. Produced by hip-hop super-producer Dr. Dre and released on Dre's Aftermath Records, the album features an infectious lead single, "My Name Is," a winning mixture of alternative rock and rap. One listen will have you hooked on the chorus, but future plays will reveal the lyrical gymnastics that Eminem kicks out so effortlessly. Obsessed with fantasies of sex, violence, drugs and a generaldepraved indifference to life itself, Eminem's alter ego Slim Shady is constantly involved in a battle of good vs. evil leavened by a high degree of irony. You'll need a few listens to absorb everything that Eminem is about lyrically. SLIM SHADY might offend the faint-hearted, but that's probably Eminem's intention. SKU: 1004674

What's The 411
Personnel: Mary J. Blige (vocals); Grand Puba, Busta Rhymes (rap vocals); Devante Swing, Darryl Pearson (various instruments); Dave "Jam" Hall (keyboards, drums); Mark C. Rooney (keyboards, background vocals); Mark Morales, Gordon "Fresh Gordon" Pickett (drum programming); Terri Robinson, Billy Lawrence, Tabitha Brace (background vocals); Sean "Puffy" Combs, Darryl Pearson, Kool DJ Red Alert, Christopher Williams, Jamie Brown, Eric Shurman, Andre Harrell, Maceo, DJ Clark Kent, Kurt Juice, Little Shawn, C.L. Smooth, K-Ci Hailey. Producers include: Dave "Jam" Hall, Devante Swing, Mark Morales, Mark C. Rooney, Sean "Puffy" Combs. Engineers include: David Kennedy, Tony Maserati, Mike Fonda. The opening track 'Leave A Message' is an immediately intriguing hook for the listener. A series of answering machine messages overa funky drum beat does not fail, even though most callers insist on saying 'peace' instead of 'goodbye' at the end of every call. The artist first appears on track two, and stays in control throughout an album of high-quality urban R&B/soul. Highly commercial, yet it never sinks to the blandness of some other 90s female pop acts. Tracks such as 'Real Love' lend more to the best of Aretha Franklin pop flirtations than to 90s R&B. Blige is Aretha's heir apparent. SKU: 1006234

Peach Orchard, The/In Order To Survive
Full performer name: William Parker/In Order To Survive. William Parker/In Order To Survive: William Parker (bass); Rob Brown (alto saxophone); Cooper-Moore (piano); Susie Ibarra (drums). Recorded at Context, Knitting Factory & Alterknit in 1997 & 1998. THE PEACH ORCHARD is a vibrant live album from perhaps the most beloved free jazz group of the late '90s. It was at this time that bassist William Parker came into his own as a bandleader and composer. While the Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra showcased Parker's vision for large ensemble sound, In Order To Survive displayed his equally strong small jazz combo concepts. In pieces like "Thot," "Three Clay Pots," and the group's theme "In Order to Survive (We Must Keep Hope Alive)," the group moves readily from highly addictive vamps and grooves to extended sections of free meter improvisation, presenting a living history of jazzin the process. Alto saxophonist Rob Brown, fully featured throughout, is one of the most intensely inventive and expressive improvisers of the present day. On the title track, his keening wails vividly evoke the cries of the Navajo people as the U.S. Army--brought to life by the rhythm section's relentless drive--razes their land. THE PEACH ORCHARD is an incredibly rich document, and essential to anyone interested in the lifeblood that flowed through the NYC jazz scene during this time. SKU: 1023235

Greatest Kiss
1996 was the year that dreams came true for die-hard Kiss fans. The original quartet reunited and donned make-up for a lucrative tour to go along with their UNPLUGGED record and a live compilation. GREATEST KISS, a collection of their biggest hits, keeps the cash registers ringing. Throughout the first years of the band'ssuccess, Kiss were not unlike their fans (except for the make-up)...kids from the street who dreamed of rock stardom. Not surprisingly, sex and rebellion were popular topics for the rock & roll masses. Whether the subject was groupies ("Plaster Caster", "Do You Love Me"), streetwalkers ("Strutter") or youthful anthems ("Flaming Youth," "Rock And Roll All Nite"), these simple yet effective songs affected everyone from Nirvana and The Melvins to Garth Brooks and Lenny Kravitz.
