Pretzel Logic [Remastered]
Cassette available on MCA (1593). NOTES: Personnel includes: Donald Fagen (vocals, keyboards); Walter Becker (guitar, bass); Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Denny Diaz, Dean Parks (guitar); Tim Schmidt, Victor Feldman (marimba); Michael Omartian (keyboards); Chuck Rainey (bass); Jim Gordon, Jeff Porcaro (drums). Recorded at the Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. Includes 1999 liner notes by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were session musicians and staff songwriters prior to founding Steely Dan in 1972. Their highly inventive music relied on a synthesis of styles, heard to perfection on this, theirthird album. Jazz, baion-based R&B and sumptuous west coast pop were fused together to create a sound greater than the sum of its parts and one that was uniquely "Steely Dan." Crafted session musicians brought a technical excellence to the set, but the strength of the duo's vision ensured that sterility did not supplant inspiration. Gorgeous melodies interweave with expertise to create a sumptuous tapestry satisfying head and heart. SKU: 1017779

Chain Gang Of Love
Debut full-length from Danish garage-rock duo follows their 'WhipIt On' mini-album. Inspired by Bob Dylan, Sonic Youth, the Jesus & Mary Chain and the Velvet Underground, they display a studied, pointed cool and minimalist, raw style. Whilst darker in tone than most of their contemporaries, the songs on this record are slightly more upbeat as they have stopped writing everything in B flat minor and changed into the "happier" key of B flat major. Includes liner notes by Chris Willman, Walter Becker & Donald Fagen. Digitally remastered by Glenn Meadows (Masterphonics, Nashville, Tennessee). For fans of the legendary Steely Dan, this four-disc box set is a dream come true. CITIZEN STEELY DAN 1972-1980 contains every track (plus one rare demo) from every album by the ultra-creative team of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. The accompanying book is stuffed full of rare photos, cover art, album reviews and other info you never thought you'd see about these reclusive artisans. Tales of Fagen and Becker's infamous marathon recording sessions and intense working environment aside, the results of their efforts are spectacular. All the hits are here, of course, but it is the massive amount of additional material that makes this set so special. The deep soul of "Dirty Work" from CAN'T BUY A THRILL or the funk of "Your Gold Teeth" from COUNTDOWN TO ECSTASY are just a couple of early examples of their craftsmanship. The unique performance of Duke Ellington's "East St. Louis Toodle-oo" followed by "Parker's Band" from the sensational PRETZEL LOGIC reveal the source of the jazz influence that permeatedFagen & Becker's work. The later material from ROYAL SCAM, AJA and GAUCHO takes on a sheen of refinement and it, like the rest of their art, is best enjoyed in its entirety. SKU: 3102931

Urban Hymns
URBAN HYMNS contains a hidden track after "Come On." The Verve: Richard Ashcroft (vocals, guitar); Simon Tong (guitar, keyboards); Nick McCabe (guitar); Simon Jones (bass); Peter Salisbury (drums). Additional personnel: Mel Wesson, Paul Taylor (programming). Producers: Andrew Loog Oldham, Youth, The Verve, Chris Potter. "Bitter Sweet Symphony" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or A Group With Vocal and BestRock Song. On URBAN HYMNS The Verve continues to widen the creative spectrum of psychedelic Britrock. The Verve exhibits a great deal of musical depth as they blanket "Bitter Sweet Symphony" with a full string section, employ acoustic guitars to evoke the simple, Carpenters-ish sentiments of "Sonnet" and "The Drugs Don't Work," and utilize heavily processed guitars on "Weeping Willow." Whether exploring the loud or soft extremes of their dynamic range, the band aspires to classic songwriting, tastefully incorporating retro sensibilities with sweet-sounding hooks that yield a tranquil, pastoral beauty. Remembering Bud Powell
Personnel: Chick Corea (piano); Kenny Garrett (alto saxophone); Joshua Redman (tenor saxophone); Wallace Roney (trumpet); Christian McBride (bass); Roy Haynes (drums). Recorded at Mad Hatter Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Tony Cohan and Chick Corea. REMEMBERING BUD POWELL was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group. This is a truly unique disc in the canon of legendary pianist Chick Corea. REMEMBERING BUD POWELL is not the run-of-the-mill tribute album where less than memorable performances of rehashed standards constitute an homage to Bird, Dizzy or Miles. This is a project of considerable forethought and dedication. Corea has assembled a stunning group of performers including saxophonists Kenny Garrett and Joshua Redman, trumpeter Wallace Roney, bass phenom Christian McBride and bebop pioneer Roy Haynes on drums. Together they form a powerful unit that masterfully executes a rousing commendation of the musical brilliance of the great bop pianist. Corea's rhythmic piano style lends itself well to Powell's complex compositions like the swinging opener "Bouncin' With Bud." Haynes punches and jabs the horn line on a frantically exciting reading of "Willow Grove." Corea's reflective solo intro to "Dusk In Sandi" recalls Powell's often forgotten lyricalside. Turning back to straight bebop, Powell's "Oblivion" and later "Tempus Fugit" give the band an intense workout. Of special note, Corea's own "Bud Powell" is a radiant piece that captures Powell's rhythmic flair while gliding through a beautifully cascading harmonic progression. SKU: 1008701

Greatest Hits (Easy Listening For Intergalactic Travel)
Full title: Greatest Hits: Easy Listening For Intergalactic Travel. Recorded between 1956 & 1973. Includes liner notes by Jerry Gordon. Sun Ra never had any actual hits, but this compilation affords the unfamiliar with an easy and wondrousway into his dauntingly vast output. The dozen-and-a-half selections are drawn from what is considered to be his peak period, 1956-1973. It was certainly his most prolific time. The set touches on 15 different albums, a couple singles, and one number from the soundtrack to SPACE IS THE PLACE. The collection is accurately subtitled "Easy Listening For Intergalactic Travel." Sun Ra's music can indeed be otherworldly, and these particular selections are among his most friendly (though it could be argued his music was never unfriendly; it just made serious demands on listeners--in exchange for hefty sonic rewards). This set is ideal for those already familiar with Sun Ra, as it contains favorites of many fans. From post-bop rollicks to stomping, swinging forays that make connections to his early work with Fletcher Henderson, to group chants, ballads, and ethereal landscapes, this is an essential collection. Thug World Order (Parental Advisory) [PA]
Personnel includes: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, LaReece, 3LW, Felecia, Avant. Producers include: L.T. Hutton, Rico Wade, The Platinum Brothers, Armando Colon, DJ U-Neek. Since the mid-'90s, Cleveland's own Bone Thugs N Harmony have been perpetrating their own peculiar, wildly successful brand of accessible thug rap. THUG WORLD ORDER seems to intensify the stylistic schizophrenia inherent in the Midwestern quartet's mixture of gangsta attitude and infectious hooks. On the one hand, there's a snippet of the group's late mentor Eazy-E testifying to the reality of the thug life depicted in the Bone Thugs' lyrics. On the other hand, there's the sweet, chiming sound of R&B sirens 3LW on "Get Up & Get It," which also boasts an undeniably positive message. And any group that can maintain a street-real image while conspicuously sampling Phil Collins ("Home") hasgot to have something going on. The rapid-fire vocal delivery that's always been a trademark is present here as well, of course, ensuring that longtime fans will remain on board for the THUG WORLD ORDER. SKU: 1075153

"Don't Speak" was nominated for 1998 Grammys for Song Of The Year and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. No Doubt's members cite a strange variety of musical influences: Kiss, Prince and Madness, to name a few. And it's easy to imagine that their hometown itself, Anaheim, California (home to Disneyland), may have played a part in forming the band's schizophrenic, high-energy sound, which took TRAGIC KINGDOM, the band's second album, on a slow, steady ride up the pop charts. It finally hit No. 1 in December 1996, 14 months after it was released. This is ska-punk-new wave-dance music, with instrumentation ranging from hardcore guitar to mellow, reggae-style horns. Singer Gwen Stefani's voice is by turns peppy, almost adolescent ("Spiderwebs") and emotionally wailing; she can sound a lot like Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano ("Just A Girl"). When Stefani sings, "I'm just a girl, little ol' me/Don't let me out of your sight," she does so without a hint of girlishness; her voice is all attitude, with a warbling edge of melodrama. For the most part, these are happy songs, though No Doubt do get philosophical on"Different People": "Once in a while I sit back/And think about the planet/Most of the time I trip on it/To kick back and think of how massive it all is/And how many others are on it." Alien Love Secrets
Personnel: Steve Vai (guitar, bass, programming); Julian Vai (vocals); Tommy Mars (organ); Deen Castronovo (drums). All songs written by Steve Vai. "Tender Surrender" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. ALIEN LOVE SECRETS, which was once the name of Steve Vai's music/philosophy/advice column in a popular guitar magazine, screams open with a big, low, slinky, heavy and hairy groove. "Bad Horsie," which begins the disc, mixes strange sounds, tasteful fretboard acrobatics and a frightful lowness emanating from Vai's bottom 7th string. There is a rambunctious energy here reminiscent of the musical duel at the end of the film CROSSROADS, where Vai played the Devil's guitar prodigy. Rock guitar fans will not be disappointed with the seven mostly instrumental escapades--many are altogether hummable, each bearing Vai's unmistakable personality and living up to his reputation for fantastic expression. The set is varied enough that each piece is drastically different, complete unto itself and yet completely Vai. The myriad of various voices andemotions he can conjure from six or seven strings, and a few signal processors, is impressive. Aside from someone's momentary interjection ("Shut up! We know you can play!"), the only human vocals present are on "Ya-Yo Gakk," one of the cooler songs on ALIEN LOVE SECRETS, which features musical gibberish eloquently expressed by Steve's child, Julian. The effect is a successful mix of the goofy with the sublime. SKU: 1000600

Good Morning Spider
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Sparklehorse: Mark Linkous (vocals, guitar, piano, Wurlitzer piano, optigan, samples). Additional personnel: Sofie Michalitsianos (vocals, cello); Vic Chesnutt (spoken vocals); David Lowery (guitar, bass, drum machine); Stephen McCarthy (pedal steel guitar); Melissa Moore (violin); Paul Watson (cornet); Johnny Hott (piano, drums); Scott Minor (harmonium, drums). Even more inventive than the brilliant VIVADIXIE..., GOOD MORNING SPIDER is the sound of a man who quite literally died and lived to tell about it. Before recording the album, Sparklehorse singer/songwriter Mark Linkous flatlined for two minutes in a London hospital, an experience reflected in the lyrics of the lullaby-like "Saint Mary" where he sings, "Blanket me, sweet nurse, and keep me from burnin'. I must get back to the woods, dear girls. I must get back to the woods." True to his word, Linkous returns with startling urgency, taking his quirky rural aesthetic to further extremes, as evidenced on the aggressive distortion-filled album opener, "Pig," and in the hushed sleepiness of "All Night Home." The head 'horse briefly ventures into poppier territory with the catchy chorus of "Sick of Goodbyes," but most songs are far stranger creatures like the lush "Painbirds" and the fuzzed-out "Ghost of His Smile," which employ an eclectic array of arrangements and instrumentation. It's rare that an album of such wide scope can hold itself together, but with GOOD MORNING SPIDER, Linkous has triumphantly crafted a cohesive sound-collage of both fierce vitality and astonishing beauty. Toys In The Attic
Also available on CD on Master Sound/Legacy [7464 52857] with deluxe packaging. NOTES: Aerosmith: StevenTyler (vocals, harmonica, keyboards, percussion); Joe Perry (acoustic guitar, slide guitar, percussion, background vocals); Tom Hamilton (guitar, bass); Brad Whitford (guitar); Joey Kramer (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Scott Cushnie (piano); Jay Messina (bass marimba). Recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York. A truly inventive Aerosmith album, still suffused with a gloriously raspy sense of the blues, but quietly evocative in its timbre and approach. It showed Tyler working out lyrics that were so much more than simple cars and girls fodder, 'Adam's Apple' theorizing that creation could quite possibly have occurred with an alien mothership landing on earth and setting the wheels of the human race in motion. 'Sweet Emotion' throbbed slowly into life, 'Big Ten Inch Record', a salty R&B work-out, while 'You See Me Crying' was heightened and given body by a warm orchestration. A clear steeple of great work amid a skyline of repeating successes. SKU: 1003299

Illinois Concert, The
Personnel: Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, flute, bass clarinet); Herbie Hancock (piano); Eddie Khan (bass); J.C. Moses (drums). Recorded live at the University of Illinois, Champaign, Illinois on March 10, 1963. Reeds player/composer/arranger Eric Dolphy was, in the early '60s, in the vanguard of the free jazz movement, yet his music was not as "out" as thatof some of his contemporaries. Dolphy played alto sax, flute, and bass clarinet in a free, more vocalized manner, but over more or less standard chord changes. THE ILLINOIS CONCERT, previously unreleased, is a noteworthy addition to Dolphy's impressive body of work. Recorded live at the University of Illinois in 1963, this album captures him with a sympathetic, creative, and thoughtfully swinging rhythm section, as well as, on the last two tunes, the University's brass ensemble and big band. Herbie Hancock's lyrical piano is somewhat Monk-like and drummer J.C. Moses is busy, buoyant and powerful. Here, Dolphy's alto playing points towards jazz's future without compromising swing or warmth. SKU: 1024976

Talking Timbuktu
Personnel: Ali Farka Toure (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, 6-string banjo, njarka, percussion), Ry Cooder (acoustic & electric guitars, electric slide guitar, electric mando-guitar, cumbus, mbira, marimba, tamboura, mandolin, bass, samples); Oumar Toure (vocals, congas, bongos); Hamma Sankare (vocals, calabash); Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown (electric guitar, viola); John Patitucci (acoustic bass, bass); Jim Keltner (drums). Recorded at Ocean Way Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California in September, 1993. Includes liner notes by Nick Gold. TALKING TIMBUKTU won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. By the time your average listeners get around to the slow, elemental backbeat of "Ai Du," all of their preconceptions about chickens and eggs, roots and fruits or bluesmen and griots have been blurred and obscured by the enchanting music that makes up TALKING TIMBUKTU. It's all in there: the droning traditional timbres of Mali in Ali Farka Toure's guitar; the deep, mysterious incantations of the Mississippi delta blues in Ry Cooder's slide work; the soulful backwoods moan of "Gatemouth" Brown's viola; the percolating rhythms of Hamma Sankare and Oumar Toure; and the earthy resonant dance of drummer Jim Keltner and bassist John Patitucci. "Ai Du" sums out to something not unlike the blues or West African music...but it's something else again--like some pan-ethnic folk music for the 21st century. That's because TALKING TIMBUKTU is an epic cross-cultural super-session that capturesthe deepest spirit of music and transports it across ethnic and stylistic boundaries without demeaning the gift-giver or the gift. Ali Farka Toure's blissful melodic lines do not adhere to traditional blues form, but rather suggest a kind of pre-blues music of African origins. On a tune such as "Soukora" Toure pours out his heart to his lover, as he and Cooder playfully circle each other with bell-like chords and ornaments that sound like a curtain of electric pearls, while Toure's more vivid attack on "Amandral" echoes phrases evocative of John Lee Hooker. In truth, TALKING TIMBUKTU resists easy description. It is exquisite, mysterious music. SKU: 1013649

Personnel: Eliane Elias (piano); Bob Brookmeyer (conductor, valve trombone). Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra includes: Nicolai Schultz (soprano & alto saxophones, flute, alto flute); Michael Hove (soprano & alto saxophones, flute, clarinet); Uffe Markussen (soprano & tenor saxophones, clarinet, bass clarinet); Tomas Franck (soprano & tenor saxophones, clarinet); Benny Rosenfeld, Jesper Riis, Palle Bolvig (trumpet, flugelhorn); Vincent Nilsson, Steen Hansen (trombone, baritone horn); Kjeld Ipsen (trombone); Axel Windfeld (bass trombone, tuba); Klaus Lohrer (bass trombone); Nikolaj Bentzon (keyboards, synthesizer); Anders "Chico" Lindvall (guitar); Thomas Ovesen (acoustic & electric basses); Jonas Johansen (drums); Ethan Weisgard (percussion). Recorded at Studio 3, Broadcast House, Copenhagen, Denmark from February 23-26, 1997. Includes liner notes by Peter H. Larsen. IMPULSIVE! was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. This collaboration betweenvalve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, Brazilian pianist-composer Eliane Elias, and the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra is superb. The arrangements by Bob Brookmeyer bring out the best in both the music and the musicians. Whether it's the funky rhythms of "Just Kiddin'" or the lush wash of chords we hear on the ballad "One Side of You," this album is packed with great writing and riveting performances. We hear virtuosic soloing throughout. In fact, if there's anyone out there who is still suspicious of European jazz musicians, this record will convince you otherwise. Elias and Brookmeyer share the soloing on "So In Love," each soliloquizing eloquently atop the delicate swing of the rhythm section. Other selections such as "Moments" and "The Time is Now" feature hot improvs by the members of the orchestra, namely trumpeter Henrik Bolberg Pederson, bassist Thomas Ovesen and drummer Jonas Johansen. It adds up to an excellent, well-rounded effort by all involved. SKU: 1067929
