Verve Remixed Vol.2
Encouraged by the success of the first VERVE REMIXED album, the techno-friendly souls at Verve have once again opened up their vaults to electronica artists. This time around, the Funky Lowlives kick things off with Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca," a minimal yet urgent rendition of the classic, replete with occasional synthesizer washes and driving percussion. Felix Da Housecat gives Nina Simone a fittingly decadent house treatment on "Sinnerman," while the Gotan Project takes a more subtle accordion-driven approach on Sarah Vaughan's saucy "Whatever Lola Wants." Other standout tracks include Layo & Bushwacka's dreamy remix of Ella Fitzgerald's "Angel Eyes," Fila Brazillia's sunny version of Cal Tjader's "Soul Sauce," Dan the Automator's funky side of WillieBobo's "Fried Neckbones and Some Home Fries," and Koop's surprisingly traditional version of Astrud Gilberto's "Here's That Rainy Day." While these re-workings are obviously dance-floor oriented, the brilliance of the original recordings always manages to shine through, making the collection appealing to both club kids and jazz fans. My Way
Arranged and conducted by Don Costa. Arranger Don Costa's style, simultaneously modern and classic, was the sparkplug of Sinatra's late-'60s/early '70s releases, and MY WAY is the album that raised the bar for the recordings that followed. Throughout, Sinatra shows off so many different sides of his talent that it's hard to get past the admiration of his diversity, beyond which there's awhole separate level of enjoyment to be had in the individual performances. On Ray Charles's "Hallelujah, I Love Her So" he's eminently soulful and swinging. He plumbs the depths of his soul for the bittersweet touch of "Yesterday" and Jacques Brel's "If You Go Away." Sinatra delivers his manifesto on the epic title track, in which he looks back on a life of determined individualism with both pride and a harsh sense of reality. SKU: 4112735

Steady Groovin'
Personnel: John Scofield (guitar); Eddie Harris, Billy Drewes, Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Howard Johnson (baritone saxophone, tuba, bass clarinet); Randy Brecker (trumpet, flugelhorn); John Clark (French horn); Jim Pugh, Steve Turre (trombone); Larry Goldings (organ); Bill Frisell (guitar); Dennis Irwin, Charlie Haden, Marc Johnson (bass); Bill Stewart, Idris Muhammad, Jack DeJohnette, Joey Baron (drums); Don Alias (percussion). Producers: John Scofield, Peter Erskine, Steve Swallow, Lee Townsend, Don Grolnick. Compilation producer: Eli Wolf. Recorded atthe Power Station, New York, New York between November 1989 and June 1995. Includes liner notes by Eli Wolf. Digitally remastered by Odea Murphy (Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California). Where most musicians would normally move into a gentler style as they age, John Scofield chooses to dig deeper into the funk with each passing year. STEADY GROOVIN' is a collection of some of Sco's funkier cuts from his time on the Blue Note label. Featured along with the guitarist's signature twang are other contemporary masters like organist Larry Goldings, saxophonists Joe Lovano, the late Eddie Harris, trombonist Steve Turre, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Idris Muhammad. Although Scofield frequently dots his sessions with equal amounts of swinging blowouts and reflective ballads, it is the grungy soul-jazz numbers like "Do Like Eddie" or the Miles-esque "Big Top" that always seems to bring out the guitarist's most memorable performances. Also included is the almost comical "Camp Out," Scofield's energized take on the "Hello Mudda, Hello Faddaa" novelty classic. Whether he's issuing lingering blues-inflected solos or laying out a chicken-pecking rhythmic background, Scofield shows just why he gets better, funkier, and hipper with each tick of the clock. Nothing Is Easy (Live At The Isle Of Wight 1970)
The legendary 1970 Isle of Wight festival is sometimes thought of as England's Woodstock. Alongside such strange bedfellows as Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, and Tiny Tim, Jethro Tullput on a raucous, energetic stage performance captured here on NOTHING IS EASY. Even through their loudly amplified, festival-sized sound, the true Tull hallmarks are here, including Ian Anderson's haunting, minstrel-esque flute lines ("Bouree") and folky, acoustic guitar-driven compositions, which touch on weighty themes ("My God"). There is an energetic raggedness to the playing here that seems strangely out of keeping with the meticulous, art-rock constructions usually associated with Tull. But the raw, churning energy works creates magic charm, with Martin Barre's crunching electric guitar and Clive Bunker's thunderous drumming surging to the fore. In fact, Tull are at their best in this performance on "Dharma for One," which merges blasts of hard-hitting rock noise with Anderson's incantatory vocals and lyrical ruminations on intellectual and spiritual themes. In addition to capturing Jethro Tull's contribution to the Isle of Wight festival for posterity, NOTHING IS EASY is a vivid snapshot of one of the '70s most revered prog-rock bands in their fiery youth. Beach Boys' Party/Stack-o-tracks [Remastered]
2 LPs on 1 CD: PARTY (1965)/STACK-O-TRACKS (1968). BEACH BOYS' PARTY! was recorded as a studio jam. STACK-O-TRACKS contains instrumental versions of Beach Boys songs. Reissue producer: Mark Linett. Includes liner notes by David Leaf. Digitally remastered using HDCD technology. BEACH BOYS' PARTY: Engineer: Chuck Britz. Originally released on Capitol (MAS/DMAS-2398). STACK-O-TRACKS: Originally released on Capitol (DKAO-2893). The quotes around the word "Live" in the sub-title give the game away--the Beach Boys recorded BEACH BOYS' PARTY! over a couple of days at Western Studio 2 to buy some time for the band to make PET SOUNDS, which PARTY bafflingly ended up outselling. It's of interest as much for the choice of material as for the somewhat forced goofery. There are a couple of Beatles songs, an Everly Brothers hit, a nod in the direction of Phil Spector, and such '60s kegger faves as "Hully Gully" and "Alley Oop," in addition to the album's big hit, "Barbara Ann." Ultimately it's a fascinating glimpse inside the collective mind of the band at its ease, laying bare its influences, its somewhat more irritating tics (read: Mike Love), and occasionally its transcendent beauty, in the form of the aforementioned Everlys song "Devoted to You" andSpector's "There's No Other (Like My Baby)." Its companion STACK O' TRACKS is a compilation of the instrumental backing tracks from the band's middle period, which basically means you either get to listen to the nuts and bolts of some of the best pop songs ever recorded, or have a hell of a karaoke party. Or both. SKU: 1058977

Stratosfear
Tangerine Dream: Edgar Froese (6 & 12-string guitars, harmonica, piano, Mellotron, Moog synthesizer, bass); Chris Franke (Mellotron, harpsichord, organ, Moog synthesizer, percussion, loop); Peter Baumann (electric piano, Mellotron, Moog synthesizer, programming). Recorded at Audio Studios, Berlin, Germany in August 1976. One of Tangerine Dream's earliest and most classic recordings, STRATOSFEAR's Mellotron-soaked melodies have not only found their way into samplers and DJ repertoires worldwide--the band have also even revisited the album's plangent themes in their successive soundtrack compositions, such as RISKY BUSINESS. In 1976, the band (Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, and Peter Baumann) was still creating music as imagistic, fantastic and phantasmagorical as its accompanying track titles ("The Big Sleep in Search of Hades," "3 AM At the Border of the Marsh from Okefenokee"). The vast washes of Moog, Mellotron, rhythm computers, and Fender Rhodes piano that grace "3 AM" still sound like they originated from the seventh circle of Hell. Their sheer alien-ness seems to bespeak music made not of this earth. The title track's hovering, extraterrestrial sequencer hypno-pulse continues to resonate in today's electronica. SKU: 4127687

DJ Kicks (Mixed By The Stereo MC's)
This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Stereo MC's. Fans of the Stereo MC's who have been waiting since 1992 for a follow-up album to their brilliant and acclaimed CONNECTED may be somewhat disappointed to discover that this is a mix compilation. Our only advice to them is: don'tbe. Here you will find a jewel box of beats and breaks, and in amongst them two original tracks by the Stereos themselves. The mix opens with what sounds like a recording of a child at a yard sale before launching auspiciously into "Moon Trek" by the Mike Theodore Orchestra from 1977--a funky and dramatic overture to the blend of hip-hop from both sides of the Atlantic, with and without rapping. The old school rap is represented by Kool G Rap & DJ Polo's "Road To The Riches" and the Disco Four's "Do It, Do It" while the more avant-garde material from the UK comes in the form of the Herbaliser and Red Snapper. If you are a confessed "beathead," then there is a plethora of styles here, all united by big, phat beats, so effectively used by the MC's in their own productions. So, while you're waiting to be "re-connected," get DJ KICKS. SKU: 1030453

There Will Be A Light
Full performer name: Ben Harper/Blind Boys Of Alabama. Harper/Blind Boys Of Alabama: Ben Harper (vocals, guitar); Clarence Fountain, Jimmy Carter, George Scott, Tracy Pierce, Bobby Butler, Ricky McKinnie, Joey Williams (vocals). Additional personnel: Jason Yates, Marc Ford, Michael Ward, Juan Nelson, Leon Mobley, Oliver Charles, Rock Deadrick. Recording information: 01/25/2004 - 03/15/2004. This collaboration between Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama draws heavily from blues and gospel traditions. Many of the songs on THERE WILL BE A LIGHT, particularly "Take My Hand" and "Mother Pray," are highly devotional. However, unlike many of the spiritual records on the market, this album is musically diverse and non-formulaic. And, despite the finely wrought production, Harper retains an earthy, organic feel throughout this intimate outing, which relies more on subtlety and nuance than blatant preaching. THERE WILL BE A LIGHT also emulates Depression-era blues very well. "11th Commandment" and "Well Well Well" feature Harper's slide guitar, and his soulful playing harks back to the work of Robert Johnson and Elmore James. Unlike some revivalists, Harper shows that he understands--and has internalized--the Delta blues and gospel traditions. Ofcourse, one can't overstate the contribution the Blind Boys of Alabama bring to this album. Their passionate harmonies add warmth and grace to each and every song. SKU: 6573794

Dynamic Duo, The [Remastered]
This is a special 20-bit digital master of the original tapes. Personnel: Jimmy Smith (organ); Wes Montgomery (guitar); Oliver Nelson (conductor); Jerry Dodgion (alto saxophone, clarinet, flute); Bob Ashton (tenor saxophone, clarinet, flute, alto flute); Phil Woods, Danny Bank (baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, flute, alto flute); Clark Terry (trumpet, flugelhorn); Jimmy Maxwell, Joe Newman, Ernie Royal (trumpet); Jimmy Cleveland, Quinten Jackson, Melba Liston (trombone); Tony Studd, Dick Hixson (bass trombone); Jerome Richardson (clarinet, alto & tenor flutes); Richard Davis (bass); Grady Tate (drums); Ray Barretto (conga, jingle bells). Recorded at Van Gelder Recording Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on September 21, 23 & 28 1966. Includes liner notes by Michael Ullman. This is part of Verve's Master Edition series. Oliver Nelson arranged and conducted the tunes for this album; his three big-band charts essentially consist of a few heavy choruses up front, after which the horns get out of the way so Jimmy and Wes can do their their thing. Montgomery and Smith also do two quartet numbers with Grady Tate on drums and Ray Barretto on congas. As a result, there's plenty of real jazz here, unlike some other Creed Taylor-produced Montgomery records. In retrospect, it's surprising that this this meeting of the masters didn't happen sooner, as Montgomery and Smith were remarkably similar in some ways. Each man was considered a pioneer whose blinding technique defied all preconceptions of what was possible on his instrument. Moreover, each tempered a dizzying capacity for note-perfect bebop with a healthy shot of the blues. Montgomery's insistent riffing behind Smith's solo on "Down By the Riverside" is a case in point, as is his own impeccably constructed solo on the blues "James and Wes." At moments like these one can't help but wonder what anyone thought an extra fourteen horns could possibly add to this session. SKU: 5071537

Standards
Personnel: Lee Morgan (trumpet); James Spaulding (alto saxophone, flute); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); Herbie Hancock (piano); Ron Carter (bass); Mickey Roker (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producers: Bob Belden, David Weiss. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on January 13, 1967. Includes liner notes by David Weiss. It's hard to picture Lee Morgan daintily stepping through the changes to cocktail-hour versions of "My Funny Valentine" or "Misty." Fortunately, that's not what he's doing here. A lot of thought went into this session, which nevertheless remained in the Blue Note vaults from the time of its recording in 1967 until 1998. Duke Pearson's arrangements play Morgan's trumpet off of a reed section of James Spaulding, Wayne Shorter and Pepper Adams, which is in turn supported by the no-slouch rhythm section of Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Mickey Roker. Morgan and Pearson may not have had Miles Davis' capacityto bring Broadway tunes into the jazz repertoire for good, but they did succeed in choosing songs of various vintages that had not yet been played to death, including "Somewhere" from West Side Story, and a then-current pop hit, Tim Hardin's "If I Were A Carpenter." No need to cringe--there are plenty of great jazz artists who should only be lucky enough to have made a record this hip while drawing on contemporary material. SKU: 1007587

Live...with A Little Help From Our Friends Vol.1
Gov't Mule:Warren Haynes (vocals, guitar); Allen Woody (bass); Matt Abts (drums). Additional personnel includes: Derek Trucks, Chuck Leavell, Bernie Worrell, Marc Ford, Randall Bramblett, Jimmy Herring. Recorded live at The Roxy, Atlanta, Georgia on December 31, 1998. A bad-ass among bad-asses, former Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes shook the pillars of Atlanta's Roxy with Gov't Mule at this New Year's show. Presented on LIVE are two discs worth of highlights, with guest appearances by such firebrands as Jimmy Herring, Bernie Worrell and Chuck Leavell. Who other than these boys would do such powerful renditions of Black Sabbath, Elmore James, Neil Young and Coltrane tunes all in the same night Midnight is rung in with the Sabbath doomsday classic, "War Pigs." The Mule pays tribute by closely following the original sound. "Mr. Big" proves to be particularly ferocious here, with Marc Ford pouring molten guitar all around. Warren comes out as the filthy-good slide player he is on "Look On Yonder Wall," with boogie piano by Leavell. Mr. Worrell holds church with his double-organ intro to Warren's own "Soulshine." Allen Woody's bass playing is dexterous throughout, a fine complement to Matt Abts' dead-on kit-bashing. This is torch-bearing hard rock to make Granny smile real big. SKU: 1056920
