King Of The Blues
Personnel includes: B.B. King (vocals, guitar); Al Kooper (various instruments, guitar); Trade Martin (various instruments, background vocals); Jerry Williams (various instruments); Steve Cropper (guitar); Joseph Malignaggi, Ethel Abelson, Ann Barsk, Maura Giannini, Anthony Posk, Carmel Malignaggi (violin); Robert Magnuson (alto & tenor saxophone); Ronald Cuber (baritone saxophone); Lou Marini, Tom Scott, Marty Grebb (saxophone); Alan Rubin (trumpet, reeds); James Pugli (trombone); The Muscle Shoals Horns (horns); Carson Whitsett (keyboards); Ray Griffin (bass); James Robinson (drums); Rodney Kelly, Jimmy Hotz (programming); Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, The Jim Gilstrap Singers (background vocals). Producers include: Jerry Williams, Al Kooper, Trade Martin, Frederick Knight. Engineers include: Chris Green, Richard "Fast Fingers" McIntosh, Rick Delana. KING OF THE BLUES was an attempt to contemporize B.B. King by smoothing off all the edges of his sound and using lots of synthesizers along with a number of well-known names to help accomplish this goal. Half of the songs were produced by noted '80s songwriter Jerry Williams who brought in plenty of drum machines and guests like Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks and Steve Cropper on songs such as "Can't Get Enough" and "Standing On The Edge." Williams even frees King up from Lucille down to focus his great vocals on "You've Become A Habit To Me" by handling all the programming andkeyboards himself. The legendary Al Kooper drops in as a producer/multi-instrumentalist on "Let's Straighten It Out" and a radically rearranged version of "Drowning In The Sea Of Love." King does end up cutting loose, slicing through the slick production of "Lay Another Log On The Fire" by squeezing out some particularly tasty licks and adding some swing to the vocal chorus of "Business With My Baby Tonight." Fair Weather Johnson
Hootie & The Blowfish: Darius Rucker (vocals, guitar, dobro); Mark Bryan (guitar, mandolin, piano, background vocals); Jim "Soni" Sonefeld (piano, drums, percussion, background vocals); Dean Felber (bass, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Lili Haydn (violin, viola); Michael Severens (cello); Peter Holsapple (accordion, piano, Hammond organ); John Nau (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Randy Guss (tambourine); Nanci Griffith & Band, Dean Dinning, Glen Phillips & Band (background vocals); Cary. Recorded at The Site, Marin County, California. Includes liner notes by Mark Bryan, Dean Felber, Darius Rucker, Jim "Soni" Sonefeld & Paul Graham. An air of melancholy and isolation hangs over Hootie & The Blowfish's second major-label album. A similar air hangs over many follow-ups to whopping commercial succeses like Hootie's CRACKED REAR VIEW. But this South Carolina foursome is both too smart to follow that tired path in which stardom begets ennui, and a few miles on the road beget resentment and resignation. The darkness in their existential-pop love songs derives not from the world without, but from souls within. Meanwhile, they craft R&B-soaked folk-rock with the confidence of a band that's as popular as they wanna be. Propelled both inward and onward by their fame, they continue to cast for sad fish with happyish hooks. The prevalent sound of FAIRWEATHER JOHNSON is dark folk-rock, with jangly guitars and melodies rooted in '60s rock. The country-gospel swing of "So Strange," awash in the sound of a Hammond organ, sounds like vintage Rolling Stones; "Silly Little Pop Song," which isn't silly at all, is Beatlesque down to an ooh-la-la-la backing chorus. The song structures themselves are also dizzyingly '60s-ish, many clockingin at three and a half minutes or less. But the band's tangle of Southern roots separates this from any other classic-rock homage. On the gorgeous "Earth Stopped Cold At Dawn," they invite country singer Nanci Griffith to join them in a country-rock ballad that could pass for acoustic R.E.M.; "Fool" is nearly Cajun (with an accordion played by former R.E.M. sideman Peter Holsapple); and "She Crawls Away" bounces to an island beat. The arrangements cannily and cleanly incorporate cellos, violins and even a mandolin. They're topped and set off by Darius Rucker's nearly reckless vocal performance. Alternately slurring phrases and spitting them out with venomous love, Rucker's voice abandons reason in favor of pure emotion, as if to parry away the complaints that Hootie's art was based on craft alone. Reflections [Remastered]
Contains bonus tracks. Personnel: Jerry Garcia (vocals, guitar, organ, percussion, chimes); Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Keith Godchaux (piano, tack piano, electric piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Larry Knechtel (piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Nicky Hopkins (piano); John Kahn (Clavinet, organ, synthesizer, vibraphone, bass guitar); Phil Lesh (bass guitar); Mickey Hart (drums, percussion); Ron Tutt, Bill Kreutzmann (drums); Donna Jean Godchaux (background vocals). Recording information: His Masters Wheels, San Francisco, California (10/1975 - 11/1975). All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Nextto his solo debut, GARCIA, Jerry Garcia's REFLECTIONS is probably the strongest album the Grateful Dead's leading light made under his own name. It doesn't hurt that he's got the Dead backing him on half the tracks, but a band made up of both pals and studio vets stands up just as impressively on the rest. Aside from the cover tunes (including a transcendent take on Allen Toussaint's "I'll Take a Melody," where Garcia mixes magically with pianist Nicky Hopkins), almost everything here found its way into the Dead's live shows. The heartrending country ballad "It Must Have Been the Roses" and the gentle, gospel-tinged "Comes a Time" remain two of the most affecting songs to ever emerge from the Dead camp. Bonus tracks, including spirited versions of the Elvis Presley chestnut "Mystery Train" and the Hank Williams classic "You Win Again," further illuminate the head Dead man's eclectic roots. Fragile [Remastered]
Yes: Steve Howe (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Chris Squire (vocals, bass); Jon Anderson (vocals); Rick Wakeman (piano, electric pianos, organ, harpsichord, Mellotron, synthesizer); Bill Bruford (drums, percussion). Recorded at Advision Studios, London, England in September 1971. Originally released on Atlantic (19132). All tracks have been digitally remastered. This marked the period when Yes left the planet and took up residence on one of artist Roger Dean's far-off lands. The musical transition is apparent with longer instrumental passages taking over from the three-minute song format. Lengthy pieces open and close the album, and both songs have become Yes chestnuts. "Heart Of The Sunrise" and "Roundabout" are strong tracks musically, with the latter winning out asbeing more accessible. Without detracting from Anderson, Howe, Bruford and Wakeman, Chris Squire's bass playing is superlative throughout. SKU: 1079864

Austin Powers: Goldmember [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files as well as the video for the song "Daddy Wasn't There." Everybody's favorite British man of mystery hits the silver screen yet again in the inevitable third installment of Mike Myers's fortune-generating AUSTIN POWERS series. This time around, the swinging '60s hero is partying like it's 1975, and the soundtrack accomodates the stylistic shift. There's only one period classic, Earth Wind & Fire's "Shining Star." The rest of the album features contemporary artists nodding to mid-'70s pop, as DJ Paul Oakenfold delivers the era-referencing "1975," Dr. Dre remixes the Rolling Stones' disco moves on "Miss You," (which admittedly overshoots the aforementioned target date a bit), and Soul Hooligan teams with Diana King for a funked-up version of ELO's "Evil Woman." In a clever nod to the film's utilization of Michael Caine as Austin's father, former Bangle Susanna Hoffs closes the disc with her take on the theme song from Caine's smash '60sfilm ALFIE. Traditional Sufi Qawwalis Vol.4
Full title: Traditional Sufi Qawwalis-Live In London Vol. IV. Recorded live in London, England on December 14, 1989. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was the greatest qawwali singer of his generation as well as the most famous. In 1989, Ali Khan and his ensemble gave a unique performance at the Kufa Gallery, in London, England under the auspices of the Sama Performing Arts Network (SPAN). The qawwalis were sung in a traditional format and in a distinctly classical idiom. The full concert is available on four CDs, this being the fourth installment. All three tracks on this CD maintain a similar style. The impact of vigorous hand clapping, both repetitive and forceful, tends to produce a trance-like state in the listener. In addition, Ali Khan's powerful tenor voice makes this music simplyawe-inspiring. Although it's a highly religious and devotional form of expression, outsiders and lay persons alike nonetheless can appreciate qawwali music. Its practitioners create an atmosphere that is truly rapturous and transcendental. The highlight of this album is probably "Traditional Qawwali in Ragas Marwa & Bhatiyar" a stirring piece that sings praises to the Islamic prophet Mohammed. SKU: 1016829

Friend Or Foe
Adam Ant's first record without his back-up band The Ants proved to be his strongest album to date, as well as his mainstream commercial breakthrough. Keeping only guitarist Marco Pirroni on hand, Ant seriously backed off on the campy pirate/Indian/tribal-drumming motif that marked his earlier releases. The advent of MTV proved to be fortuitous for the dashing singer. His breakthrough single, "Goody Two Shoes," and its accompanying video got brought Ant a much larger American audience and introduced the libidinous side of the singer, a facet which was to become more pronounced in later releases. Elsewhere, the album chugs along with a heavy backbeat and piping horns, giving "Friend or Foe," "Place in the Country," and "Crackpot History and the Right to Lie" a percolating feel. Pirroni's 50's style twang guitar is a complementary counterpoint to Ant's British pop stance. "Here Comes the Grump" and"Made of Money" both benefit from his reverb-drenched guitar lines. The latter features a multi-part acapella section, a first for Ant. SKU: 1045161

Double Wide
Personnel: Uncle Kracker (rap vocals); Kid Rock (guitar, programming, turntables, background vocals); Kenny Olson, Jason Krause (guitar); Lynn Owsely (pedal steel guitar); James Montgomery (harmonica); Jimmie Bones (keyboards, background vocals); Michael Bradford (bass, programming, background vocals); Stefanie Eulinberg (drums). Kid Rock plays the Dr. Dre role as his protege Uncle Kracker is unleashed upon the music world with DOUBLE WIDE. The album opens with a skit in which Rock gives career and "health" advice to a seemingly humble Uncle Kracker, and melts into a world of live instrumentation, old school hip-hop rhyming, andvery hot beats. "Better Days" has Uncle Cracker doing his best ZZ Top/Billy Gibbons, with bluesy, gravelly vocalizing. "Follow Me" has a neo-funky shuffle that evokes bands such as The Getaway People and The Push Stars, while "Heaven" mixes East Coast-inspired beats with a country-flavored chorus that's catchy as hell. "Steaks & Shrimp" offers old-school posturing and rhyming while "Who's Your Uncle?" is surely Uncle Cracker's "Bawitdaba," and his mission statement of domination is clear. "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" features instantly likeable pop choruses and "Aces & 8's" oddly combines techno influences with a C&W flavor. DOUBLE WIDE will most likely take Uncle Cracker from the trailer park to the big stages. SKU: 1061472

Sing The Sorrow
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. A.F.I.: Davey Havok (vocals); Jade Puget (guitar); Hunter (bass); Adam Carson (drums). Recorded at Cello Studios, Los Angeles, California. With its major label debut SING THE SORROW, AFI (aka A Fire Inside), has made the leap from being strictly hardcore punk denizens to a more complex outfit dabbling in goth guitar textures and a soaring sound. WithNirvana/Smashing Pumpkins producer Butch Vig and Green Day/Rancid knob-twirler Jerry Finn manning the board, this transition ends up being a smooth one. Swirling synths, disembodied harmonies and the Tool-like bashing of drummer Adam Carson help the foreboding "Miseria Cantare" set a mood closer to Dead Can Dance than the Dead Kennedys. Although "Death of Season" predominantly rides a hardcore vibe, the most obvious indicators that this ain't your older brother's punk rock are "The Leaving Song Pt. II," with its sing-along-chorus and pounding rhythm, the dark Cult-like rocker "Bleed Black," and "This Celluloid Dream," a charged anthem of vulnerability. Further indications that AFI successfully straddles the worlds of mainstream acceptance and street credibility are radio-friendly songs like "The Leaving Song" and "The Great Disappointment" featuring Jade Puget's melodic riffing and Davey Havok's heartfelt crooning. This Bay Area quartet seals the innovative SING THE SORROW with "Girl's Not Grey," a perfect pop-punk song that rides along on catchy, chanting harmonies and churning guitar. SKU: 1080942

Tales From Topographic Oceans
Yes: Jon Anderson (vocals); Steve Howe (vocals, guitar); Chris Squire (vocals, bass); Rick Wakeman (keyboards); Alan White (drums). Recorded at Morgan Studios, London, England. Digitally remastered by Joe Gastwirt. For prog rock's detractors, TALES is the genre's nadir. For admirers it's an artistic pinnacle. Whichever camp you're in, it's hard to deny the sheer chutzpah necessary to undertake this sprawling epic. Though broken up into four sections, TALES greeted 1973 listeners as a single composition spread across four sides of a double album. This wasunprecedented in the world of mainstream rock. For the band, it was the closest they would ever come to a true fusion of classical structures and themes with rock-oriented instrumentation and sensibilities. The lyrics are typically elliptical and spiritually oriented, and many a bad trip was probably launched by trying to interpret them. The real pleasure of this album lies in the elaborately textured, harmonically sophisticated interaction between keyboardist Rick Wakeman, guitarist Steve Howe and highly melodic bassist Chris Squire. All three were at the peak of their instrumental prowess on TALES, and listening to them interact is like watching a fine athlete excelling at his chosen sport. SKU: 1011756

Big Generator
Yes: Trevor Rabin (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Chris Squire (vocals, bass); Jon Anderson (vocals); Tony Kaye (keyboards); Alan White (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: James Zavala (harmonica, horns); Lee R. Thornberg, Nick Lane, Greg Smith (horns). Engineers: Paul De Villiers, Alan Goldberg. Producers: Trevor Rabin, Trevor Horn, Yes. With 1987's BIG GENERATOR, Yes continued in the synthesizer-laden, production-heavy mode that had made the band's comeback album, 90125, such a success. While some diehard fans found this era of Yes to be in contrast to the band's previous classically influenced art rock, this incarnation of the band had plenty of the strong musicianship and fantastical imagination that had propelled the group to legendary status in the '70s. Indeed, producer Trevor Horn and the band succeeded in creating an intriguing sonic landscape that only Yes could conceive. At first listen, songs like the opening "Rhythm of Love," with its ethereal choir introduction and rocking riffs, may seem superficial, but the soaring vocals of Jon Anderson and the inventive orchestration of Rabin make it well worth the effort. Likewise, the disc's title track is the heaviest groove the group ever produced. The song also has enough unusual twists and turns to raise even the most stoic eyebrow. The mysterious "Shoot High Aim Low" and "Final Eyes" offer many stunning wonders that uphold the tradition of Yes' music beautifully. Finally, Anderson's superior performance on the closing "Holy Lamb"leaves listeners with plenty to relish. SKU: 1009401

Synchronicity [SACD] [Digipak]
The Police: Andy Summers (vocals, guitar); Sting (vocals, bass); Stewart Copeland (vocals, drums). Recorded at Air Studios, Montserrat, West Indies and Le Studio, Quebec, Canada. Voted Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in the '83 Grammys, SYNCHRONICITY was the fifth in a string of successes for The Police. The single "Every Breath You Take," also earning a Grammy, was written by Sting in ten minutes in a middle-of-the-night inspiration, after which he went back to sleep. Fancy knowing you were going to break upand yet be able to record and produce this masterpiece. The world domination of the Police was as calculated and planned as was their departure. Each of the intervening albums have something special but the power of tracks such as 'Synchronicity II', and the haunting quality of 'Every Breath You Take' (you really believe Sting when he says, 'I'll be watching you') give this record the edge. The only tracks less than brilliant are Summers' and Copeland's offerings, a fact of which they must all have been aware. They bowed out while they were still winning. SKU: 1079815

Riding With The King
Personnel: Eric Clapton, B.B. King (vocals, guitar); Doyle Bramhall II (guitar, background vocals); Andy Fairweather-Low, Jimmie Vaughan (guitar); Joe Sample (piano, Wurlitzer piano); Tim Carmon (organ); Nathan East (bass); Steve Gadd (drums); Paul Waller (programming); Susannah Melvoin, Wendy Melvoin (background vocals). RIDING WITH THE KING won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. Although EricClapton and B.B. King's 30-plus years friendship originated during a chance meeting and subsequent jam session at New York City's Caf' Au Go Go in 1967, the idea for a collaborative album only crystallized during the sessions for King's 1997 album DEUCES WILD. The resulting record, 2000's RIDING WITH THE KING, is a stellar event thanks to a wealth of rich material and a solid supporting cast including Jimmie Vaughan, Joe Sample and Steve Gadd. B.B. King's extensive catalog provides a wellspring of inspiration, including signature songs such as the smoldering "Three O' Clock Blues," alongside lesser-known numbers like the ribald shuffle "Days Of Old," and the LIVE AT THE REGAL chestnut "Help The Poor." Elsewhere, King and Clapton look to guitarist Big Bill Broonzy (an acoustic "Key to the Highway") and Chicago pianist Maceo Merriweather (the slow-rolling "Worried Life Blues") for inspiration. Even the non-blues numbers are delivered with a rich subtlety befitting these guitar icons' consummate musicianship. John Hiatt's title track becomes a mid-tempo exchange between old friends, while their honeyed vocals on the standard "Come Rain or Come Shine" are worthy of Ray Charles' 1959 version. SKU: 1034031

Home Again
New Edition: Johnny Gill (vocals, acoustic guitar); Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, Mike Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell (vocals). Additional personnel: Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Dinky Bingham, Stan Jones (various instruments); Mike Scott (guitar); Caroline Daws, Brenda Mickens, Helen Foli, Dick Massman, Laurie Hippen, Julia Persitz, Andrea Een, Liz Sobieski (violin); Alice Preves, Hasan Sumen (viola); Josh Koestenbaum, Laura Sewell (cello); Greg Hippen(acoustic bass); Edwin Nicholas (keyboards, drums, programming); Stokely (percussion); Alex Richbourg, Jeff Taylor (drum programming). Producers include: Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Silky, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Chucky Thompson, Jermaine Dupri. The inevitable reunion of one of the 1980s' biggest pop groups was a long time in the making. The seeds were sown in 1991, when solo stars Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant joined their three former bandmates, who had found stardom as Bell Biv DeVoe, on a version of the BBD single "Word To The Mutha" (on WBBD - BOOT CITY! THE REMIX ALBUM). The results were overwhelming, and demand for a full-fledged reunion began. Now, eight years after the last New Edition album, the band is back HOME AGAIN. Much has changed in pop music since the group's 1983 debut, but somehow New Edition seems to stay current, and get better, with each album. The ballads are more mature now; "One More Day" sounds like Babyface-style soul. "Hit Me Off" is HOME AGAIN's Candy Girl-Cool It Now-Count Me Out-If It Isn't Love pop song, and it has a new jack swing to it--not too hip-hoppy, but just enough to keep up with the times. Whether it be Johnny's strong, gospel-influenced vocals, Ralph's soft-toned harmonies or Bobby's crooning, each member adds his own flavor to this band's recipe, and the combined talent makes this reunion truly delicious.
