"Good Times, Bad Times," from the band's 1969 debut, thunderously ushers in the era known as acid rock. "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is a fine example of the group's equally vital acoustic side. The Britpop quartet Kula Shaker appears to have raided the closets of its favorite bands in the making of its debut album. K contains a bluesy, retro ambience very much like The Stone Roses and Primal Scream. The full-throttled guitars sound like those of Oasis. And a hefty dose of Hindu mysticism runs rampant throughout--a la Cornershop.
But Kula Shaker manages to make something original of all those borrowed parts. Rising above its influences, Kula Shaker creates a niche of Britpopin which transcendence is the goal. Amidst the blues-drenched guitars and the Hindi chanting, the band is hard at work building something spiritual and sensual. Kula Shaker isn't afraid of a tamboura, using the exotic instrument on several tracks. Nor is it afraid to be linked with the Grateful Dead, eulogizing that band in the track "Grateful When You're Dead/Jerry Was There." But Kula Shaker is no freewheeling "jam" band; there's a precision to the musicianship on this record that cannot be ignored.

This second helping from the sessions that produced the preceding KID A will probably strike close listeners as a bit more structured, though it'llbe difficult to determine whether that's simply because the peregrinations of the last album have prepared them for the trips to the outer limits taken here. Those expecting a U2-like return to tuneful, anthemic guitar-rock will have their hopes dashed upon a rock of colorful electronic experimentation and moody, studio-enhanced madness.
The piano-based "Pyramid Song" and the Martian-gospel-choir ballad "You and Whose Army?" might placate verse-chorus-verse traditionalists slightly, but the sampler-in-a-trash-compactor "Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors" and the pointillistic ambience of "Hunting Bears" attest to Radiohead's continued nonconformist tendencies. AMNESIAC opens with the claustrophobic, synth-bedecked "Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box" and closes with the Dixieland funeral march "Life in a Glass House." Along the way, the band engages in the kind of fearless, pretension-risking (but highly successful) sonic experimentation that made a cultural artifact out of SGT. PEPPER. There are less apt comparisons.

A live album released concurrently with a DVD video of the same concert, SEVEN WORLDS COLLIDE documents a one-time-only set bringing Neil Finn together with friends and acolytes including brother Tim, son Liam, and fans Lisa Germano, Johnny Marr, and Eddie Vedder. The latter turns in a surprisingly credible version of the Split Enz classic "Stuff and Nonsense." All the participants get their turns in the spotlight, with Germano's "Paper Doll" and her haunted duet "Turn and Run" among the highest points.
As always, Neil and Tim sound best when singing together, and the siblings take the majority of the vocals, both on theirown songs and on unexpected choices like the Smiths' "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out," capturing the deadpan humor of the original. Other highlights include a lovely version of the Finn brothers' collaboration "Angels Heap" and a Vedder-led rip through the manic "I See Red" that's the only rocker of the night. At times, the star of the show blends a little too unobtrusively into the background, but overall, SEVEN WORLDS is that rarity, a live album that's often as interesting as the original studio recordings.

With the help of DJ extraodinaire Pete Tong, they've assembled another impressive collection, this one tilted more exclusively toward the electronic.
There is no filler here. Underworld contributes the steady roll and cheerfullyhypnotic beat of "8 Ball," which easily stands with the best of their work. The production work and songwriting of William Orbit greatly improves the dance-lite grooves of All Saints, giving their "Pure Shores" a gorgeous, spectacularly spacious sound that nicely offsets the vocals. Mory Kante's "Yeke Yeke" is a bright, pulsing dance classic-to-be. Also of note is New Order's "Brutal," which is just that--vicious slashes of guitar over a shuffling beat. The album closes unexpectedly, with a monologue by the film's star, Leonardo DiCaprio.

These two 1960 releases offer an ingenious mixture--swinging Latin rhythms popular in the late '50s and early '60s, and the rhythmical perfection of Peggy Lee. When these songs were recorded, Lee was already the toast of the world. Having proved herself early on in the Benny Goodman orchestra she then started writing her own songs, raked in hit after hit, and became a celebrated actress. It seems appropriate that the selection of songs from OLE ALA LEE! should be favorites from themusical theater.
Songs like "On the Street Where You Live" & "I Could Have Danced All Night" from "My Fair Lady" are romantic concoctions of tempo and vocal artistry. "Come Dance With Me" is an invitation that can't be refused; like all the songs on this package, it'll sweep you off your feet.

Because it was released between 1975's proto-ambient DISCREET MUSIC and 1979's similarly-titled AMBIENT 1: MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS, 1978's MUSIC FOR FILMS is often mistakenly lumped in with Brian Eno's ambient releases. However, while MUSIC FOR FILMS shares some of the facets of Eno's ambient music, particularly in the lack of vocals, the structure of the album precludes its description as an ambient release. While Eno's definition of ambient music focuses on the extended length of pieces and their meditative content, the 18 tracks on MUSICFOR FILM are very brief--only one reaches four minutes and half are under two--and they cover an appropriately cinematic range of moods, from tranquility to fear. At times, Eno and his collaborators, including Fred Frith, Phil Collins, and John Cale, recall such soundtrack composers as Bernard Herrmann and Nino Rota, but MUSIC FOR FILMS is quintessential Eno.
