Art And Soul
Personnel: Renee Rosnes (piano); Dianne Reeves (vocals); Scott Colley (bass); Billy Drummond (drums); Richard Bona (djembe, udu, rainstick, shaker, percussion). Recorded at Bear Track Studios, Suffern, New York from February 16-18, 1999. Includes liner notes by Renee Rosnes. Renee Rosnes is a Canadian-born jazz pianist whose inspired and inspiring presence has graced the live performances and recordings of Out Of The Blue, J.J. Johnson, and Joe Henderson. She has a lyrical but fierce hard-bop style that's adaptable yet distinctive. On this, her sixth album for Blue Note, she stretches beyond the hard-bop milieu (that far too many young players can get stuck in) to create a challenging yet friendly set of modern acoustic jazz. The album starts off with an almost manic version of the Ornette Colemanclassic "Blues Connotation," then eases into a melodious, gospel-charged take on the Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends." Jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves sings on Wayne Shorter's "Ancient Footprints," which is given a rousing, summery treatment with both African and Latin overtones. The album, which was produced by Rosnes, closes with an entrancing interpretation of "Children's Song No. 3," by classical composer Bela Bartok. Throughout, Rosnes' playing is nimble, surging, warm, and thoughtful, as she plays melodically without ever using technique for its own sake. Recommended! SKU: 1025292

Whaler
Personnel: Sophie B. Hawkins (vocals, keyboards, percussion, programming); Peter Vettese (keyboards); Stephen Lipson (bass, programming); Neil Conti (drums); Louis Jardim (percussion). Recorded at Sophie's Tugboat Palace, New York and The Aquarium, London, England. WHALER is an auspicious sophomore effort for songwriter Sophie B. Hawkins, as this multi-dimensional artist begins to transcend her complex influences, while growing into a stylistic sphere all herown. WHALER signals a richer, more pop-oriented production, in which waves of multi-tracked voices and grand synthesizer flourishes frame Hawkins' voice in rich, romantic colors, echoing her concern with the vagaries and varieties of sensuality. With its swirling synths, dense production values and echoes of rap, "Right Beside You" is a quintessential power ballad. "The Ballad Of Sleeping Beauty" and "Did We Not Choose Each Other" explore Hawkins' mystic take on relationships, while "Don't Don't Tell Me No," "I Need Nothing Else" and "Sometimes I See" employ varied ethnic rhythms, percussive background vocals and doo wop harmonies to frame her tales of sensual obsession in girl group sentiment. And in the tradition of her big breakthrough hit "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover," there's its upbeat, reggae cousin "Let Me Love You Up," complete with cajun accordion flourishes. SKU: 1000258

Bali - Music From The Morning Of The World
2 LPs on 1 CD: THE BALINESE GAMELAN/KETJAK: THE MONKEY CHANT. Includes liner notes by David Lewiston. This is part of the Electra/Nonesuch Explorer Series. MUSIC FROM THE MORNING OF THE WORLD is a landmark among world music recordings. Gamelan, the dominant style of Balinese music, is the disc's primary focus. The various strains of gamelan collected here are intended for ritualistic dance, festivals, and performance in Hindu temples. The Gamelan orchestra-which consists of 25 xylophone-like bronze-keyed gangsas, the reong (a set of 12 tuned gongs), tjeng-tjengs (cymbals), drums, and flutes- creates dynamic, densely textured soundscapes. The instrumentation is as evocative and exotic as the sounds it produces, conjuring a shifting, pulsing sonic environment. To Western ears, this music may sound kaleidoscopic, charming, seductive--or even slightly menacing. Several cuts also feature singing or Balinese chanting--as on the beautiful, unearthly "Lullaby." The real reason to buy this disc however, is the inclusion of the Ketjak, or "The Ramayana Monkey Chant." The Ketjak, a re-enactment of the battle described in the epic RAMAYANA, is an exorcism that drives out evil withdance and incantation. Performed here by an enormous multi-part male chorus, the piece contains passages of unbelievable rhythmic complexity and intensity. If only for this one track, MUSIC FROM is required listening for anyone with even a passing interest in world music. SKU: 1082577

Eliminator
ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (guitar, vocals); Dusty Hill (bass, synthesizers, vocals); Frank Beard (drums, percussion). ELIMINATOR, with its churning guitars and synthesizer hooks, was on the album charts for over a year, and had hits with "Sharp Dressed Man," "Gimme All Your Lovin'" and "Legs." The album and its accompanying videos were ubiquitous in 1983, on televisionZZ Top was seen on MTV, "St. Elsewhere," even on the Tonight show. 1983 was the year Z.Z. Top went from being everyone's favourite bar-room boogie band to international superstars. Graced with mind-boggling and incredibly photogenic beards, a very neat trilogy of sexy videos and a collective ear for a quite distinct and highly stylized, if somewhat grizzled blues/pop, the sudden enormity of their success seems in retrospect like no real surprise. MTV had never quite seen the like and the attention given to the excellent 'Gimme All Your Lovin'' single was quickly repeated for both 'Sharp-Dressed Man' and the quite irreverent 'Legs'. It still sounds fresh, innovative and fun today. in the wake of many imitators. SKU: 1004730

Sound Of '65/There's A Bond Between Us [Remastered]
2 LPs on 1 CD: THE SOUND OF '65 (1965)/THERE'S A BOND BETWEEN US (1965). Graham Bond Organization: Graham Bond (vocals, alto saxophone, Hammond B-3 organ, Mellotron); Jack Bruce (vocals, acoustic & electric basses); Dick Heckstall-Smith (tenor saxophone); Ginger Baker (drums). Includes liner notes by Harry Shapiro. Like his contemporary Alexis Korner, Graham Bond is one of the unsung heroes of the early-'60s UK R&B scene. Both led groups that incubated talent which would later mature and eclipse their own groundbreaking efforts. With Bond it was his rhythm section, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce, who later became two-thirds of Cream. Both of the organist's albums included here offer an intriguing snapshot of this fertile period in Britain when jazz and blues coexisted quite happily. Bond was a firm fan of Ray Charles, which extended to both his choice of material ("What'd I Say") and also his approach. A talented player himself (both organ and alto sax) as well as a vocalist, Bond was generous in showcasing his sidemen ("Dick's Instrumental" for tenor player Dick Heckstall-Smith) and tended to pepper the staple Beat group repertoire with his owncompositions. "Camels and Elephants" is an early example of both Ginger Baker's composing and drum solo style. "Hoochie Coochie Man" replaces the malevolence of Muddy Waters's version with something altogether jazzier and as such is the perfect introduction to Bond. SKU: 1044162

No Secrets
Personnel: Carly Simon (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Mick Jagger, Paul & Linda McCartney, James Taylor (vocals); Paul Keough (acoustic guitar); Lowell George (slide guitar); Bobby Keyes (tenor saxophone); Peter Robinson (acoustic piano); Bill Payne (organ); Kirby Johnson (electric piano); Dave Henshaw (synthesizer); Klaus Voorman (bass); Andy Newmark, Jim Gordon (drums); Ray Cooper (congas); Richard Perry (percussion);Liza Strike, Vicki Johnson, Bonnie Bramlett, Doris Troy (background vocals). Recorded at Trident Studios, London, England from September to October 1972. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Carly Simon's third album, 1972's NO SECRETS, was her best-selling release ever, thanks to the inclusion of the huge hit single "You're So Vain." Speculation persists over the identity of the person so deftly skewered in this song (Simon's been quoted as saying that while there's elements of various people in the lyrics, "there's nothing there that isn't true of Warren Beatty"), to such an extent that the excellence of the rest of the album is often overlooked. Besides the gospel-tinged hit "The Right Thing to Do" and a moving tribute to the Carter Family, "We Have No Secrets" is a confessional delight, and "Waited So Long" and James Taylor's "Night Owl" are two of the most rocking songs Simon ever recorded. Exquisitely produced and smartly sequenced, NO SECRETS has just the right balance of slick studio polish and soulful rough edges to make this a classic of '70s singer-songwriter pop. SKU: 1001940

A portrait of the artist as hit singles machine, SHAKING THE TREE features Peter Gabriel's most commercial post-Genesis material in one convenient package. Every cut is superb, and the dazzling track list includes "Solsbury Hill," still rock's most eloquent resignation speech, the anti-apartheid classic "Biko," the magisterial "Don't Give Up" with Kate Bush, the MTV friendly "Shock the Monkey" and "Sledgehammer," among others. Critical carping about whether this package is representative of his oeuvre as a whole is beside the point. This is, clearly, the Peter Gabriel album you'd most want to play at a party. SKU: 1082960

Infinity/Escape/Frontiers
Originally released as three separate albums, ESCAPE, FRONTIERS and INFINITY. ESCAPE: Journey: Steve Perry (vocals); Jonathan Cain (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Neil Schon (guitar, background vocals); Ross Valory (bass, background vocals); Steve Smith (drums). Producers: Mike Stone, Kevin Elson. Engineer: Wally Buck. Recorded at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California. Engineer: Mike Stone. Recorded at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California. INFINITY: Journey: Steve Perry (vocals); Neal Schon (guitar); Gregg Rolie (keyboards); Ross Valory (bass); Aynsley Dunbar (drums). Producer: Roy Thomas Baker. The 1998 specially-priced box set ESCAPE/FRONTIERS/INFINITY contains three of Journey's best-known albums. If you're curious about the state of early-'80s rock radio, all three releases are a virtual lesson in the true meaning of "arena rock." While the albums include some of Journey's biggest hits ("Don't Stop Believin'," "Open Arms," "Separate Ways," "Wheel in the Sky," "Faithfully," etc.), there are also plenty of strong tracks that were never issued as singles-- "Stone in Love," "Chain Reaction," etc. If you're a newcomer to Journey and want to dig deeper than its 1988 GREATEST HITS release, ESCAPE/FRONTIERS/INFINITY is highly recommended. At the time of ROCKABILLY BLUES's release in 2001, Sleepy LaBeef was not only, at six foot seven, the tallest living Sun rockabilly star, but by far the best. LaBeef's music just keeps getting better and better as he ages. This collection of previously unreleased '80s Rounder recordings emphasizes his blues side, with definitive performances of Muddy Waters' "Mannish Boy" (uniquely suited to LaBeef's sonorous baritone), Jimmy Reed's "Bright Lights, Big City," and Sonny Boy Williamson's "Bottle Up and Go." Rock and country ringers include blistering versions of two Little Richard classics and a revival of "Make Room for the Blues" by rockabilly cult figure Skeets McDonald. This is roadhouse music of the highest order. SKU: 1056105

Anarchy
Producers include: Teamstas, DJ Scratch, Jay D, Shock, Swizz Beatz. "Fire" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video. Busta Rhymes is an artist who never seems to forget how to make a hit record. His fifth solo album ANARCHY displays more of that infallibility, and further proves that the New York-native's longevity in hip-hop is well deserved. On the first single, "Get Outta Here," Busta employs the same style of kiddie chorus that blew up Jay-Z's "Hard Knock Life." The song is calmer than his previous leadoff singles, but don't fret;the follow-up, "Fire," brings the heat as only Busta can. With production by Rockwilder, Swizz Beatz, and others, Busta Rhymes' ANARCHY may easily become another classic. SKU: 1036000

Resurrection
Halford: Rob Halford (vocals); Mike Chlasciak, Patrick Lachman (guitar); Ray Riendeau (bass); Bobby Jarzombeck (drums). Additional personnel: Bruce Dickinson (vocals); Ed Ross (keyboards); Pete Parada (drums). Engineers include: Billy Bowers, Roy Z, Bill Cooper. Recorded at SoundCity, Van Nuys, California; Silver Cloud, Burbank, California; American Recording, Calabasas, California; Bauhaus Studios, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Here the ex- Judas Priest banshee gives the fans what they've been craving for nearly a decade--a return to his classic metal roots. After the brutal metal of FIGHT and the industrial experimentation of TWO, Rob Halford seems to have finally purged himself and is once again delivering the goods. The thunderous title track heralds the finest material he's come up with since Judas Priest's DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH. "Silent Screams" utilizes the songwriting talents of Alice Cooper and Union producer Bob Marlette for a killer tune that features Halford's lower register dubbed over his famously piercing high notes, to mighty effect. "Made in Hell" tells of the birth of Halford's addiction to metal music, and his subsequent worldwide spreading of the gospel, while "The One You Love to Hate" has him paired with Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson, reason alone to purchase this album. (The two came together through Roy Z, who produced RESURRECTION as well as three of Dickinson's solo efforts.) Whatever career missteps Rob Halford may have made in the alternative-drenched '90s, with RESURRECTION he's redeemed himself. Get the leather and spiked bracelets out of the closet. SKU: 1039881

Fear Of A Black Planet
Public Enemy: Chuck D [Carlton Ridenhour]; Flavor Flav (vocals); Terminator X (scratches); Professor Griff, Brother James I, Agent Attitude, James Bomb, Brother Mike. Additional personnel: Ice Cube, Big Daddy Kane (vocals); Branford Marsalis (saxophone); Paul Shabazz (programming); Wizard K-Jee (scratches). Engineers include: Rod Hui, Chris Shaw, Kirk Yano. Recorded at Greene Street Recording, New York, New York; The Music Palace, West Hempstead and Spectrum City Studios, Long Island, New York. If Public Enemy's two previous albums had ruffled feathers, Fear Of A Black Planet set out its stall to exploit mainstream fears. Again, the title spoke volumes. This time they raged just as hard, but theirpolitical consciousness had grown. Professor Griff had been ejected from the band for his anti-Semitic stance, and much of the album's atmosphere is created by the bunker mentality of resultant clashes with the press. The siege mentality only underscores the group's hard-nosed, cut-and-paste sample technique and the eloquence of Chuck D. 'Fight The Power' still bites harder than just about any other track in rap's history. SKU: 1000232

Very Best Of Elvis Costello & The Attractions, The
Full title: The Very Best Of Elvis Costello & The Attractions (1977-86). Producers include: Nick Lowe, Billy Sherrill, Geoff Emerick, Clive Langer, Alan Winstanley. This definitive collection offers the most penetrating overview available of Costello's work with the Attractions. Costello's early albums changed the face of pop music by harnessing punk's energy to a leaner, more incisive aesthetic that included pop hooks, virtually inventing new wave in the process. While the Attractions didn't appear until Costello's second album, his debut's moving, unsentimental ballad "Alison" nevertheless remains one of his most loved songs. The sound tightened up when the Attractions appeared, as evidenced by the angular, reggae-influenced "(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea" and the Dylan-meets-Johnny-Rotten anthem of the disillusioned, "Pump It Up." Elvis moved further afield in thefollowing years, from the lush, almost baroque pop of ARMED FORCES' "Accidents Will Happen" to the heartbreaking ballad "Good Year For The Roses," from EC's C&W album ALMOST BLUE. "Everyday I Write the Book" is as close as any mere mortal will ever come to writing a Smokey Robinson tune. True to Costello's jittery, neurotic image, things close out on an obsessive note with "I Want You," an unsettling tale of uncontrolled desire. The depth of Costello's oeuvre is too vast to be captured on one disc, but this one comes mighty close. SKU: 1009471

ONoffON
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Track 9 is a silent track used to separate the album into 2 sets. Mission Of Burma: Roger Miller (vocals, guitar); Clint Conley (vocals, bass); Peter Prescott (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Bob Weston (tape loops). Recorded in October and December 2003. Mission Of Burma: Roger Miller (vocals, guitar, strings, keyboards, percussion); Clint Conley (vocals, guitar, bass guitar); Peter Prescott (vocals, synthesizer, drums, percussion, electronics). Additional personnel: Tanya Donelly, Wounded World Singers (vocals); Christian Frederickson (viola); Eve Miller (cello); Bob Weston (loops). Recording information: 10/2003 - 12/2003. Mission of Burma's second full-length album is a major surprise for two key reasons. First of all, it's downright shocking that the revered Boston post-punk band even attempted to follow up their 1982 debut--more than 20 years later. Second, the record is stunningly good. Starting off their reunion disc with the furious sounds of "The Setup," the band (sans original member/tape manipulator Martin Swope, here replaced by Shellac's Bob Weston) confidently lunges forward, with Roger Miller's razor-sharp guitars and distinctive vocals leading the group on a rhythmic workout. Proving that Mission of Burma is a democratic enterprise, bassist/vocalist Clint Conley commandeers the blazing "Hunt Again," while drummer Peter Prescott contributes "The Enthusiast," another showcase for the band's nearly telepathic instrumental synergy. Fellow Bostonian Tanya Donnelly (Throwing Muses/Belly) sings on the dynamic "Falling," but the unexpected flourishes don't stop there; "Nicotine Bomb," the album's most unusual track, sounds like a hoedown thrown by the Dead Kennedys. Throughout ONOFFON, Mission of Burma's energy never relents, easily putting bands half their age to shame. SKU: 6555054

History Of Rock, The
Personnel: Kid Rock (vocals, turntables); Jimmy Bones (vocals, keyboards); Joe C. (vocals); Kenny Olson, Jason Krause (guitar); Mike Bradford (bass); Stefanie Eulinberg (drums). "American Bad Ass" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. Now a veteran of the rap/rock game, Kid Rock's HISTORY... includes tunes from his out of print albums THE POLYFUZE METHOD (1993) and EARLY MORNIN' STONED PIMP (1996), plus old demos and two new tracks. (The early material has been re-recorded because the master tapes are missing.) Either way, the songs here are strong enough to hold up on their own, while showing the roots of a talented artist. On "American Bad Ass," Kid proudly proclaims his influences (AC/DC, Limp Bizkit, Korn, The Stones, Grandmaster Flash and David Allan Coe, among others). Over a Metallica "Sad But True" sample, Kid also proclaims his seven-times-platinum status (after 1998's DEVIL WITHOUT A CAUSE). A straight rap tune, "I Wanna Go Back" has Rock reminiscing and wishing he could change some of his early mistakes, while "Born 2 Be A Hick" is a 50's style rocker, where he proudly displays his trailer park roots. HISTORY... may not be as strong an album as DEVIL..., but his hip hop skills, a formidable band, and great hooks still make it a mandatory listen for fans of this genre. SKU: 1032787

It's Magic (Her Early Years At Warner Bros.) [Remastered]
Full title: It's Magic: Doris Day's Early Days At Warner Bros. Personnel includes: Doris Day, The Page Cavanaugh Trio, Oscar Levant, The Pied Pipers, Jack Carson, Mel Blanc, Dennis Morgan, The Ernie Felice Quartet, Ray Heindorf, The Warner Bros. Studio Orchestra. Compilation producer: George Feltenstein. Includes liner notes by Joseph Lanza and Rudy Behlmer. Doris Day's early films provide little opportunity for her to exhibit any emotional depth; they're romantic comedies that ironically she would be reprising 10 years later in movies like"Pillow Talk." She sings on these early films, though, and it's this that makes them worthwhile. On IT'S MAGIC, the cream of the movie is skimmed and neatly presented minus the dated dialogue. Day's vocals are the timeless element, displaying an emotional gravity and sensuality in startling contrast to the rest of the film. From comic routines like "Someone Like You," and rhythm numbers like "Tic Tic Tic," to ballads such as "It's Magic," Doris Day brings relief to an otherwise flat landscape. SKU: 1074918

Superfly (Original Soundtrack)
Personnel includes: Curtis Mayfield (vocals, guitar); Johnny Pate (arranger, conductor). Recorded at RCA Studios, Chicago, Illinois and Bell Sound Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway. As leader of the Impressions, Curtis Mayfield brought a lyricism to soul music. As a solo artist he chronicled society's travails and "street" culture, which in turn inspired SUPERFLY, the soundtrack to one of the era's most popular "blaxploitation" movies. Mayfield's gift for combining light melody with simple, but chilling, wordplay ensured that the album stood up on its own terms without visual images, and its lynchpin selection, "Freddy's Dead," was a million-selling singlein its own right. Sympathetic but not sentimental, SUPERFLY set new standards for soul music. SKU: 1057658

Let's Get Killed
Personnel includes: David Holmes; Rodney Yates, Deflon Sallahr (vocals); Keith Tenniswood (guitar, vibraphone); Paul Noble (guitar, bass); Gem (guitar); The London Session orchestra (strings, brass); Daphne Tragaki, Steve Corley (keyboards). Producers: David Holmes, Richie Fermie, Tim Goldsworthy. Engineers include: Keith Tenniswood, Gary Burns, John Brough. Irish DJ David Holmes' second album, LET'S GET KILLED, provides the perfect link between his first and third albums, THIS FILM'S CRAP LET'S SLASH THE SEATS and ESSENTIAL 98/01. The first is a brilliant reinterpretation of the "cinematic" potential of ambient and techno styles, and the thirdexplores just how adaptable existing pieces of music are in the hands of DJ. Musically, LET'S GET KILLED features the expansive, visual qualities of the first record as well as early versions of redefined "found" samples-ambient sounds from the streets and bars of New York-upon which the third album is based. The seven-and-a-half-minute title track, built around a tough-guy bar narrative describing a fight, features a slow-building beat just off-kilter enough to be disorienting. Delfon Sallahr contributes rapped vocals to "Head Rush on Lafayette," possibly via answering machine. "Rodney Yates" is a curious combination of sounds that suggests a fusion of acid and lounge styles. Holmes' version of dub reggae on "Slasher's Revenge" morphs into an Ennio Morricone-like western score. The best track is probably "Radio 7," a kinetic, house take on the well-known theme music from the James Bond films. SKU: 1006981

Invisible Invasion, The (Limited Edition)
'The Invisible Invasion' is the third proper album by Liverpudlian psychedelic rockers The Coral. Whilst the album displays much of the wilful eclecticism of their previous releases, this time around it is the song writing rather than the sonic adventure that shines through, mixing influences such as BobDylan and Love with the bands own individual 'Cosmic Scouse' sound. Includes the single 'In The Morning'. SKU: 6591874

Sounds Of The Satellites
Personnel includes: Margaret Fiedler (vocals). Laika's follow-up to SILVER APPLES OF THE MOON is a delectable sonic eclipse of that record's Stereolab-isms and post-Krautrock sensibilities. But SOUNDS OF THE SATELLITES isn't retro or copyist: Laika mixes, moulds and melts layers of analog sound into a sublime potpourri that recalls mid-period Cluster, the aforementioned Stereolab, and early-'80s British synthpop. "Out of Sight and Snowblind" has the identifiable feel of indie-rockers (Laika arose out of the ashes of the Can-referencing Moonshake) who have fallen in love with electronics and exotica, and are milking their Moogs with unbridled enthusiasm and naive delight. A bubbling froth of tin canbeats, oozy synth peals and filtered organ curls, the track recalls the contemplative, twilight electro sonnets of bands that flourished on period labels such as C'est La Mort and 4AD (think M1-Alternative, early Moev, Blue Blue Blue and Insides). Laika trade in on numerous styles; rarely are they stationary, tripping on a quasi-hip-hop shuffle ("Almost Sleeping", "Prairie Dog") or percolating synth sambas ("Starry Night"). Sheer aural ecstasy. SKU: 1010192
