Summerteeth
Wilco: Jeff Tweedy (vocals, acoustic, electric, baritone, bowed, tremelo & 12-string guitars, harmonica, toy harp, synthesizer, bass, tambourine, claps); Jay Bennett (acoustic, baritone, E-bow, electric & lap steel guitars, banjo, tiple, piano, organ, Farfisa organ, keyboards, synthesizer, Moog synthesizer, slide bass, drums, bells, tambourine, percussion, claps, background vocals); John Stirratt (piano, bass, background vocals); Ken Coomer (drums, timpani). Additional personnel: Dave Crawford (trumpet); Leroy Bach (piano); Mark Greenberg (vibraphone). Engineers include: Larry Greenhill, Mike Hagler, Dave Trumfio. Moving beyond A.M.'s Uncle Tupelo-oriented country-rock, Wilco's double-length BEING THERE explored the sonic vistas of the Stones and Big Star. SUMMER TEETH takes things a step further. A loose, inspired masterwork of rootsy power-pop in the grand mid-'70s tradition, it's the greatest album Alex Chilton never made. With perfect pop melodies and a knack for throwing things askew via left-field sonic elements, this is as far from the country as Wilco could be. Jeff Tweedy's ragged-but-right voice is the essence of rock & roll--the travails detailed in the lyrics seem undeniably his own. Though his days of paying homage to Acuff-Rose seem longgone, Tweedy and his compatriots still sound engagingly organic on SUMMER TEETH. Even if they're closer to Badfinger after a few beers than to the post-Tupelo alt-country of Tweedy's former partner and Son Volt leader Jay Farrar, Wilco are still treading the same path they started years ago, obviously headed in the right direction. Moving Pictures
Inspired by "non-existing atmospheric disturbance" films, MOTION PICTURES is actually Czukay's quasi-sequel to MOVIES, his classic 1979 LP. Long recognized as perhaps the oddestand most adventurously minded member of Can, Czukay has created a broad solo catalogue of unfamiliar, adjunct music with a sorcerer's touch. Besides his trusty bass, Czukay has a fascination with--and a master's understanding of--the studio as instrument. His most provocative audio collages are designed via tape splicing, imaginative mixing, and (in the final stage) physical production. While not as cinematic in nature as MOVIES, MOVING PICTURES benefits from the more undeniably ethnic sensibilities of stalwart colleagues Jah Wobble, Jaki Liebezeit, Michael Karoli, and a gaggle of others. Czukay is the master technician, however. The arcane, Middle Eastern patina and atmospheric tones on "Radio in an Hourglass" are unmistakably devised by the same mysterious hand that dabbled with notions of sound on records with David Sylvian, Phew, and the seminal Can. Czukay remains a singular talent. SKU: 1079664

Buckshot Lefonque
Buckshot LeFonque includes: Maya Angelou, Betlemem Kiros, Tsige Metageshaic, Serlewowgel Solomon, Alexander Assefa, Uptown (vocals); Blackheart (vocals, programming); Branford Marsalis (soprano, alto & tenor saxophones, programming); Roy Hargrove, Chuck Findley (trumpet); Delfeayo Marsalis (trombone, piano); Matt Finders (trombone); Kenny Kirkland (piano, keyboards); Kevin Eubanks (acoustic guitar, slide guitar); David Barry, Ray Fuller, Nils Lofgren, Albert Collins (guitars); Robert Hurst (acoustic bass, bass); Darryl Jones, Victor Wooten, Larry Kimpel (bass); Jeff "Tain" Watts, Rob Hunter, Chuck Morris (drums); Mino Cinelu, Vicki Randle (percussion); DJ Premier (scratches, programming). Producers: DJ Premier, Branford Marsalis, Blackheart. Recorded at Sony Music Studio and Signet Sound Studio, Los Angeles, Califorina; Ocean Way Recording, Inc., Hollywood, California; The Process Recording Studios, Inc., Greensboro, North Carolina. Includes liner notes by Delfeayo Marsalis. All songs written or co-written by Branford Marsalis except "Mona Lisas (And Mad Hatters)" (E. John/B.Taupin), "Some Shit At 78 BPM (The Scratch Opera)" (C. Martin) and "Hotter Than Hot" (K. Campbell/W. Henry/M. Witter/C. Martin). For Branford Marsalis the challenge was not to bring jazz into hip hop--that's already been done. No, the challenge was to bring hip hop (among other forms) into jazz, to import the techniques, the poetry, the sounds and samples, and yet retain jazz's sense of swing; to create a music that did justice to both art forms, without patronizing either which, above all, emphasized the charm and grace of the songs. Employing the same pseudonym that Cannonball Adderley had used some 30 years earlier, Buckshot LeFonque is Branford Marsalis' attempt to fuse jazz, hip hop and other popular forms into a coherent style. Perhaps fuse is the wrong word; maybe we should say re-fuse or reconnect; as in acknowledging the common roots all American music shares, going back many generations. From the opening mood of "Buckshot Intro," with its smooth groove and funky turntable spinning, Marsalis' co-conspirator DJ Premier manages to ingratiate his programmed sources and samples smoothly into Branford's live aesthetic. On "Some Shit At 78 BPM" they bring samples of Ellington's "Anatomy Of A Murder" soundtrack to play inside a sardonic sound collage. The album's centerpiece, "Breakfast At Denny's" employs a similar approach over a riff with strong overtones of Dizzy Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts," as Branford's tenor leaps out of Earth's orbit. Superwolf (Limited Edition)
'Superwolf' is the firstcollaboration between Will Oldham and former Chavez and Zwan member Matt Sweeney. 10,000hz Legend
Air: Nicolas Godin, JB Dunckel. Additional personnel includes: Beck (vocals, harmonica, keyboards); Justin Meldal-Johnsen (vocals, bass); Sugar, Yumiko, Lisa Papineau, Jean Croc, Corky Hale, Jason Falkner, Ken Andrews, Barbara Cohen (vocals); Julia Sarr, Olyza (harp); Elin Carlson (whistle); Brian Reitzell (drums, programming); Roger Joseph Manning Jr (programming). Recorded in Paris, France and Los Angeles, California. Before this album, the last full-length offering from French duo Air was the soundtrack to the Virgin Suicides. That effort marked so much expansion on and progression from its predecessor (Air's debut MOON SAFARI) that a further push up the mountain seemed a logical expectation for 10,000 HZ. Instead, Air chose to jump off the mountain into a strange, forbidding ravine. You'll find neither the pure electro-pop hooks of MOON SAFARI nor the elegant, surreal majesty of VIRGIN SUICIDES here. Instead, the Air boys offer an insular record thick with ironic self-regard and tongue-in-cheek humor. Beck isa guest here, and his voice and pomo-slacker sensibility blend right in, but for the most part, Air lets the synthesizers and vocoders take center stage. Listening to 10,000 HZ LEGEND is somewhat akin to sitting in a bar and getting hit on by an android; in fact there's actually some Barry White-style bedroom talk filtered through electronic processing early on in the album. How far you're willing to go with these Gallic pop-bots probably depends on how far they've taken you in the past. SKU: 1059580

Autumn (Special Edition) [ECD]
Full title: Autumn (Windham Hill 25th Anniversary Edition). This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Solo performer: George Winston (piano). Producers: William Ackerman, George Winston, Howard Johnston, Cathy Econom. Engineers: Hans Soper, Russell Bond, Howard Johnston. Principally recorded on June 19-20, 1980. Includes liner notes by George Winston. AUTUMN was superstar new age pianist George Winston's first album tosell more than 1,000,000 copies. Listening to these spare, emotionally rich pieces, it's easy to understand why. But it's also clear what sets Winston apart from the hordes of other new age piano soloists: an insistent--occasionally even jarring--gothic sensibility that informs his music. Like many of his albums, AUTUMN found its inspiration in the seasonal changes wrought upon the Montana landscape that Winston calls home. Though it might be easy to pigeonhole a composition like "Woods" as easy listening, a more careful examination reveals a darker--daresay even sinister--underside, one more informed by Birnam Wood than by Hundred Acre Wood. "Stars" may bring forth images of cloud-free starlit skies, but its stirring emotionalism yearns for something more, making it difficult for a listener not to contemplate the infinitesimally small stature of human existence within an infinitely vast universe. With producers like Diamond D and Tha Alkaholiks' E-Swift at the helm, the tracks are unique, offering glimpses of real creativity. AT THE SPEED OF LIFE breaks new ground in hip-hop: Xzibit incorporates classical music in the single "Paparazzi,"while the emotion-filled "Foundation," an open letter to the Xzibit's son, features the actual cries of the rapper's baby. Brain Drain
The Ramones: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); Dee Dee Ramone (vocals, bass); Marky Ramone (drums). Producers: Bill Laswell, Jean Beauvoir, Daniel Rey. Most people ignore the Ramones' later work for one reason or another. The most likely reason is that the boys themselves play relatively few post-1979 songs in concert. In the case of BRAIN DRAIN this turns out to be a mistake, as it's the album most evocative of the classic Ramones sound since SUBTERRANEAN JUNGLE. "Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight)" and the cover of "Palisades Park" are so lavishly produced that they could havebeen outtakes from the Phil Spector sessions (though minus the negative karma that accompanied that time period). "Don't Bust My Chops" finds the Ramones revisiting the crunchy guitar sound of the mid-'80s albums, only with better hooks this time around. "Zero Zero UFO" returns the boys to familiar goofball territory and "All Screwed Up" keeps them there. BRAIN DRAIN also contains an actual bona-fide almost-hit single in "Pet Sematary," a song written for the Steven King film. SKU: 5048661

Everything To Everyone
Barenaked Ladies: Kevin Hearn (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, mandolin, accordion, piano, organ, keyboards, vibraphone, saw); Ed Robertson, Steven Page (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Jim Creegan (vocals, double-acoustic bass, electric bass); Tyler Stewart (vocals, drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Blue Man Group (percussion). Recorded at Royaltone Studios, North Hollywood, California between April & June 2003. With EVERYTHING TO EVERYONE being Barenaked Ladies first post-9/11 album, it's no surprise that these clown princes of pop infused a bit of a somber edge into their usual brand of humor-laced music. Among the lighter topics addressed are rampant consumerism (a quirkily paced "Shopping"), the incessant quest to be number one at everything (the raucous "Second Best"), and even the media-driven world of fame and fortune in which BNL reside (a harmony-drenched "Celebrity"). As always, co-vocalists Steven Page and Ed Robertson provide quitethe potent one-two pop punch, and there are times when the Ladies can go from XTC-informed ditties ("Unfinished") to jittery '80s new wave-flavored nuggets complete with wooshing synths ("Maybe Katie".) As an added bonus, limited edition versions of EVERYTHING TO EVERYONE contain acoustic versions of "Another Postcard," "Maybe Katie," and "Second Best" that are just as delectable as their plugged-in counterparts. Alternative Hits
Chelsea's second album, known as NO ESCAPE upon its original 1980 US release, bears an apt title. Not alternative in the sense of the musical genre, the songs on ALTERNATIVE HITS are largelyre-recordings, often very different, of Chelsea's earlier singles. The album was produced by Kit Lambert, the Who's original manager/producer, a rather odd choice considering that the Who's early singles don't seem to have been the influence on Chelsea's blunt, choppy, often strident punk rock that they were on the Jam or even the Sex Pistols. Many of these new recordings, particularly "No Escape," sound less edgy than the original single versions, and Gene October's harsh voice doesn't always blend terribly well with the poppier backing. But ALTERNATIVE HITS is an interesting experiment by a band not often regarded for its experimental spirit. SKU: 4111668

Best Of Arlo Guthrie, The
Tracks recorded between 1967 and 1976. Woody Guthrie's son Arlo successfully made a name for himself with a body ofwork that falls under the shadow of his father only peripherally. Beginning as a sort of comic troubadour, Arlo laid out a persona that was all his own with "Alice's Restaurant Masacree." He followed his debut album with another in a similar vein--ARLO, which yielded "Motorcycle (Significance Of The Pickle)." This was followed by a series of smartly written, arranged and produced albums which benefited from great players (Ry Cooder, Doug Dillard, Richie Hayward, Chris Ethridge, and Clarence White, among others) and sympathetic producers (including Lenny Waronker and Van Dyke Parks). The remainder of his works for Warner Brothers (now all reissued on his own Rising Son Records) were a quietly dazzling array of warm, inventive ensemble playing and superb songwriting. Though primarily popular as whole albums, there were a couple of notable hits, including "Coming Into Los Angeles" and "City Of New Orleans." This collection features some of the finest songs of his career. SKU: 1009374

Aion
Dead Can Dance: Lisa Gerrard, Brendan Perry (vocals, various instruments). The music of Dead Can Dance has long been a favorite of the "Goth" crowd; however, AION is really the first one of the band's records that can actually be called Gothic in the classic, renaissance sense. Arguably Dead Can Dance's most successful record, it contains the band's most consistent set of songs since SPLEEN AND IDEAL. Widening their view to encompass more of the ancient world than with earlier records, Dead Can Dance explore styles from Northern Europe ("The Song of the Sibyl") to the Middle East ("Radharc"), with stops along the way at a number of other surprising locations. The fact that it is based on a 16th-century Catalan chant notwithstanding, portions of "The Song of the Sibyl" are eerily reminiscent of the experimental side of David Bowie's LOW. Standouts include "Saltarello,"which was adapted from a 14th-century Italian dance and played on bagpipes, drums, and tambourine; "Fortune Presents Gifts Not According to the Book," where even Brendan Perry's English-language vocals sound ancient; and "Wilderness," an a cappella song with a multi-tracked vocal by Lisa Gerrard. AION makes for great late-night listening, though it is the kind of music that is barbed enough to demand your attention. SKU: 1054111

Additional personnel includes: Bud Shank (piccolo, flute, alto flute, alto saxophone); Ken Balzell (trumpet); Frank Rosolino, Tom Shepard (trombone); Jay Spell (piano); Marilyn Scott, Alice Thompson, Bootche Anderson, Pepper Watkins, David Bartlett, Ron Beck, Frank Biner, Roger Rifkind (background vocals). Producers include: David Rubinson, Ron Capone, Tower Of Power, Emilio Castillo, Steve Cropper. Compilation producers: Emilio Castillo, Michelle Zarin, Stephen "Doc" Kupka, Gary Peterson, David McLees. Engineers include: David Rubinson, Ron Capone, Jim Gaines. Recorded between 1971 and 1998. Includes liner notes by Kevin Phinney. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch (DigiPrep). Over its 30-plus year existence, Oakland's Tower Of Power has established itself as the premiere bastion of true soul and funk in modern music. This ANTHOLOGY represents the best cuts from the group's long and storied history. Although founders Emilio Castillo and Stephen "Doc" Kupka have weathered almost as many personnel changes as years the band has survived, they have always stuck to their original brand of "funkifized" soul with emphasis on their world-famous horn section. With no signs of slowing down, it is evident that the milestone represented by this collection is only one of many more to come. From the early days of hits like "What is Hip" and "Down to the Nightclub," to later favorites like "Soul With a Capital 'S'" and "So I Got to Groove," Tower Of Power has never apologized for its unabashed continuation of the funk of James Brown. Added to this mix are the moving ballads like "You're Still a Young Man" and "Willing to Learn" that grabbed an even wider audience of R&B lovers. Other favorites included in this mammoth set are the ultra-funky "Soul Vaccination," the signature instrumental "Oakland Stroke," and the instant party classic "Souled Out." SKU: 1044146

Seal IV
Personnel includes: Seal (vocals, guitar, bass); Chris Bruce (guitar, bass); Tim Pierce, Gus Isadore, Tim Cansfield (guitar); Pete Murray (piano, keyboards); Mark Baston (keyboards, programming); Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards);Ian Thomas, Earl Harvin (drums); Luis Jardim (percussion); Alan Griffiths (programming); Tessa Niles (background vocals). All set to record what would become SEAL IV, the album's namesake ended up tossing a large number of tracks and returned to his London hometown to start anew after living in Los Angeles for 12 years. The result is a dozen songs with a gritty texture that better reflect the Paddington-born native's affinity for soul and reggae more so than prior work. Blessed with a burnished vocal style, Seal uses it to great effect whether he's growling out the intro to irresistible numbers like the swaggering "Waiting for You" or sounding like a cross between Teddy Pendergrass and Bobby Womack on the party invitation "Get It Together." Longtime producer Trevor Horn keeps a steady hand on the rudder, executing a concise balance of lush orchestral arrangements and ethereal keyboards on songs ranging from the ambient lovemaking invitation "Heavenly...(Good Feeling)" or the can't-miss slow jam "Don't Make Me Wait." Seal's considerabletalents find him bouncing between sweeping epics such as the heavenly "Love's Divine" and snappier fare like "Let Me Roll," where this prim and proper Brit gets to strike a good-natured, faux b-boy pose.
