You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol.2 (The Helsinki Tapes)
Full title: You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 2: The Helsinki Concert. Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Napoleon Murphy Brock (saxophone), George Duke (keyboards); Ruth Underwood (vibraphone, marimba, percussion); Tom Fowler (bass); Chester Thompson (drums). Recorded live in Helsinki, Finland on September 22, 1974. Subtitled "The Helsinki Concert," YOU CAN'T DO THAT ONSTAGE ANYMORE VOL. 2 was recorded in Finland in '74. It's the same band as heard on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE, which was released a couple weeks prior to this concert. However, with another yearof roadwork under their collective belt, the band's turn-on-a-dime quotient is cranked up quite a bit. Hearing the differences in the five songs which are found on both releases offers a telling glimpse into the growth of this crack sextet. Their familiarity with the material allowed them to internalize the complex blueprints and really flourish as ensemble players. As they shift effortlessly from dense thirty-second note call and response games to orchestral landscapes, it's possible to forget that there are only six musicians running the train. Among Zappa's audience, this band rightly remains one of the most cherished of his post-Mothers ensembles. This two-hour set allows one the luxury of hear the true shape of one performance. Clueless
Compilation producers: Karyn Rachtman, Tim Devine. The soundtrack of CLUELESS--a teens-in-Beverly Hills comedy that is actress Alicia Silverstone's graduation from Aerosmith video babe to young Hollywood starlet--may be full of alterna-rock superstars, but is quite relaxed about it. The collection's shoot-from-the-hip attitude allows artists to escape their stage personas, glutton themselves on cover songs or just remix themselves silly. And while the faux spontaneity of the covers gets a little dry at times, CLUELESS also provides some out-and-out surprises. Eschewing grunge's moroseness, the compilation is centered around good old-fashioned guitar-pop for the mind, and varied grooves for the body. Supergrass sing about the joys of youth, Radioheadgo acoustic, and Ian Broudie's Lightning Seeds come up with the brighter-than-the blue-sky "Change," the kind of catchy, jangly, McCartney-esque power-popper that Broudie seems able to write at will. For the dance-floor, the remix of Luscious Jackson's "Here" illuminates the disco strobe, the Beasties set a frenzied mosh tempo, and Coolio does his Cali G-funk thang. SKU: 1000731

Live At The BBC
LIVE AT THE BBC is a 2-CD set containing 69 live tracks, all of which are previously unreleased. Also included is a 48-page booklet with track-by-track annotations and essays by Derek Taylor and Kevin Howlett. The Beatles: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr. Producers include: Bryant Marriott, Bernie Andrews, Terry Henebery, Ian Grant, Ron Belchier. Compilation producer: George Martin. Recorded live between 1962 and 1965. Includes liner notes by Derek Taylor & Kevin Howlett. Digitally remastered by George Martin. LIVE AT THE BBC was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Historical Album. Although the guitars are often electric, LIVE AT THE BBC is, essentially, the Beatles Unplugged--yanked out of the recording studio, gathered around a few microphones and encouraged to show off their raw craft, naked voices and rock'n'roll roots. MTV didn't exist in the early '60s, but the BBC did, and between March 1962 and June 1965 (a period that spans their first four albums and takes them from the simplicity of "Love Me Do" to the complexities of "Ticket To Ride") the Beatles performed 52 times on England's national radio network. Although they had honed their craft in British and German rock clubs, the Beatles were mostly known as a studio band, and the radio shows served as a sort of behind-the-curtains glimpse of the studio wizards. Most of these performances are covers of early rock, pop and country songs, and the scope of them is wider and deeper than the covers the Beatles put on their albums. There are obvious influences--Chuck Berry, Elvis and Little Richard rockers, and traditional pop ballads--along with lesser-known pop footholds that hint at how/wherethe Beatles bridged the gap between rock's teen-age years and its adulthood. They covered soul singer Arthur Alexander only once on their original records ("Anna"), but twice here, and the combination of R&B drive and complex pop changes that fuels both "Soldier Of Love" and "A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues" gives away one of the primary sources of Beatles style. John Lennon's vocal on "I Just Don't Understand," an Ann-Margret pop song, foreshadows the downbeat folk-rock with which the Beatles made their mark in the mid-'60s. A baker's dozen of Lennon/McCartney originals are spread through the set, including one, a jangly folk-rocker titled "I'll Be On My Way," that they never recorded. The John-Paul-George harmonies are in full bloom, as is the Beatlesque sense of humor. There's one terribly obvious overdub, but the rest of LIVE AT THE BBC sounds like rock'n'roll's greatest living-room sessions. SKU: 5060339

The Greatest Hits 1985-1996
Simply Red includes: Mick Hucknall (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Bootsy Collins, Lenny Castro, The Fugees. Producers include: Simply Red, Mick Hucknall, Stewart Levine, Alex Sadkin. Recorded between 1987 and 1995. This career-spanning set includes Simply Red's two No. 1 hits, "If You Don't Know Me By Now" and "Holding Back The Years," along with lesser-known selections from the band's admirable catalog of soulful pop music. Simply Red's songs are well-executed and emotive, with structures softly resting upon a foundation of jazz, reggae and soul. Mick Hucknell's rich, spirited vocals, reminiscent of Otis Redding, hold the pieces together. Over the years, Simply Red has had instrumental assistance from the likes of reggae tricksters Sly & Robbie and funkmeister Bootsy Collins. Such collaborations have led to easygoing songs held up by sharp musicianship. GREATESTHITS provides example after example of classic pop form. SKU: 1006306

Mash Out Posse
With MOP's more gangsta-rap side expressed on their recent 'Marxmen Cinema' project, their 'Mash Out Posse' alter-ego allows the hip-hop duo to further their metal/rap crossover sound. Following in the footsteps of acts like the X-Ecutioners and Cypress Hill and encouraged by the success of the band's own rap/rock hit single 'Ante Up' they merge hip-hop and crunk beats with metal riffs. The album includes reworkings of Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man'. ('Conquerors') and BeastieBoys' 'No Sleep Till Brooklyn' ('Hilltop Flava') SKU: 6563871

Viva Roxy Music (Live)
Roxy Music: Bryan Ferry (vocals, keyboards); Phil Manzanera (guitar); Eddie Jobson (violin, keyboards, synthesizer); Andrew Mackay (oboe, saxophone); John Wetton (bass); Paul Thompson (drums). Additional personnel: John Gustafson, Rick Wills, Sal Maida (bass); The Sirens (background vocals). Engineers include: John Punter, Rhett Davies, Bill Pierce. Recorded at the Apollo, Glasgow, Scotland in November 1973; The CityHall, Newcastle, England in November 1974; The Empire Pool, Wembley, England in October 1975. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Assembled from three live shows three years apart, VIVA! ROXY MUSIC suffers a little from murky sound, but features uniformly inspired performances. Violinist Edwin Jobson gets his first real chances to shine on "Out of the Blue" (originally appearing on COUNTRY LIFE) and a ten and a half minute version of "If There is Something" (from ROXY MUSIC). "Pyjamarama," the band's second single, ups the funk groove of the original considerably, and to good effect. "Both Ends Burning" comes very close to outstripping the studio version, remaking the song in a faster and more furious mold. The last two tracks, however, are simply stunning. For the first, a version of "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" that doubles the length of the original, the live production is perfect for the song's sparse desolation. Interestingly, Bryan Ferry's creepy, highly mannered vocal in this song was copied almost exactly a few years later by the vocalists of the Gothic rock movement. The last track, "Do the Strand," comes across as a frenzied locomotive accentuated by Andrew Mackay's saxophone. It also features the band performing brief excerpts of tango and waltz. Not many live albums are as essential as this. SKU: 6421534

Musicality
Salako: Luke Barwell, David Langdale, Thomas Spencer, James Waudby, Marissa Claughan, Martin Jones, John Taylor. Recorded in New Yorkshire, England on November 1998 and March 1999. Imagine... You're sharing a picnic with friends. The sunshine is bathingthe world in a hazy glow (or maybe you've had a little too much of that home-made elderberry wine). Anyway, you hear music--a perfect soundtrack. Fluttering flutes hover across chiming acoustic guitars. In the distance, an earnest string quartet pairs off with a cheap drum machine. Melodies leap out of unexpected places while soothing voices whisper in your ear. The hills are alive with the sound of MUSICALITY. Salako approached its second album like a science project, setting up equipment in odd locations (beaches, kitchens, churches), but the result is far from clinical. This is a warm, evocative record. MUSICALITY at first appears to be a grab-bag of jumbled ideas, but slowly unfolds into a magical sound picture. Sesame Street-style jauntiness abounds on "Devil's Feet Lullaby," whilst God makes an appearance on the contagious waltz "Look Left." Following in the footsteps of experimental pioneers like Brian Wilson, Salako is a sonic explorer sailing in uncharted waters. SKU: 4130696

Gershwin's World
Personnel includes: Herbie Hancock (piano, organ); Stevie Wonder (vocals, harmonica); Kathleen Battle, Joni Mitchell (vocals); Wayne Shorter, James Carter (soprano & tenor saxophones); Kenny Garrett (alto saxophone); Eddie Henderson (trumpet); Charles Curtis (cello); Chick Corea (piano); Bakithi Kumalo (guitar, bass); Marlon Graves (guitar, percussion); Ira Coleman, Alex Al (bass); Terri LyneCarrington (drums); Massamba Diop (talking drum); Madou Dembelle (djembe); Cyro Baptista, Bireyma Guiye, Cheik Mbaye (percussion); Robert Sadin (programming); Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Engineers include: Rob Eaton, Clark Germain, Todd Whitelock. Recorded in March, April and June 1998. Includes liner notes by Robert Sadin. GERSHWIN'S WORLD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. "St. Louis Blues" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s). The epitome of a 20th Century musician, Herbie Hancock has always traversed wildly divergent stylistic paths, finding his way easily into jazz, funk, fusion, dance-pop and more. His ability to make valid individual statements in all these genres is part of what makes his compositions and performances so rich. So it doesn't seem at all incongrous for Hancock to interpret the work of George Gershwin, redefining much of the Gershwin canon in the process (with assistance from some world-class compatriots). Hancock's stated aim for GERSHWIN'S WORLD is to get inside the pieces, illustrating their essence rather than knocking off rote versions of these standards. Towards that end, "St. Louis Blues" is transmogrified by the soulful vocals and funky chromatic harmonica of Stevie Wonder; "It Ain't Necessarily So" becomes an ominous, angular jazz vamp, with saxmen James Carter and Kenny Garret trading arch, sly interjections. Another genre-buster, Joni Mitchell, makes a case for a potential career as a jazz vocalist via her performance on "The Man I Love" and "Summertime." SKU: 1001675

Secret Messages [Remastered]
Electric Light Orchestra: Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer, bass, percussion); Richard Tandy (harmonica, piano, synthesizer); Kelly Groucutt (bass, background vocals); Bev Bevan (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Mik Kaminski (violin); Dave Morgan (background vocals). Producer: Jeff Lynne. Reissue producerds: Jeff Lynne, Al Quaglieri. Recorded at Wisselord Studios, Hilversum, Holland. Includes liner notes by Jeff Lynne. All tracks have been digitally remastered. In the early '80s, another wave of backward-masking hysteria hit the national scene, with unfounded claims that popular rock bands intentionally hid Satanic messages in their records. ELO had already been hit with this rumor for a song on their album ELDORADO, and on the following album's "Fire on High," Jeff Lynne deliberately placed an obvious backwards message. Because the initial prank worked so well, Lynne did not only did it again in this album's opening--the message is simply the album's title--but named the album in honor of the hysteria. SECRET MESSAGES proves that Lynne's artistic vision, like his sense of humor, was undimmed. Tracks like the psychedelically tinged "Loser Gone Wild" and the delicate "Bluebird" are as strong as anything he'd previously done, and the rockabillyish "Rock and Roll Is King" even pays tribute to the '50s-influenced style of hisformer bandmate Roy Wood. American Recordings
Solo performer: Johnny Cash (vocals, acoustic guitar). Includes liner notes by Johnny Cash. AMERICAN RECORDINGS won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Johnny Cash is back and better than ever. The legendary Man In Black is now recording for a modern rock label, and is being produced by hard-core rap/rock guru Rick Rubin--and the results are startling. Spare and stripped to the bone, AMERICAN RECORDINGS is Johnny Cash at his artistic zenith. An original acoustic ballad, the opening "Delia's Gone" is a watershed accomplishment. Wryly capturing the art of the death ballad, it presents a thoroughly textured dramatic piece, both horrifying and humorous. The same can be said for Cash's droll reading of Loudon Wainwright's "The Man Who Could Not Cry." An extremely religious man, Johnny includes several songs dealing with themes of redemption, righteousness and spiritual salvation. Sandwiched between those two songs is a character-rich, eclectic collection of material by writers like Leonard Cohen, British rocker/ex-son-in-law Nick Lowe, Tom Waits, death-metal god Glenn Danzig, and Cash himself. With his resounding baritone--which is in the best form of his long career--and restricted guitar technique, Cash is the centerpiece, creating a sound that is uniquely American--proud,solitary, nearly broken, yet defiant. Johnny Cash, alone with a single guitar, is commanding in his dry, unencumbered intensity. AMERICAN RECORDINGS reaffirms his unique musical prowess, and presents his glorious shadowy skills to a new generation. SKU: 1072099

Didn't See Me Coming
Personnel includes: Keith Sweat (vocals); T-Boz, David Hollister (vocals); Bobby Crawford, Andrew Lane (keyboards, programming); Ronald Linton, Stringz, Ol' Skool, Ki Ki, Dee Dee, Raybone, Jamilla Franklin, Karmel, Tre P (background vocals). Producers include: Keith Sweat, Steve Stone, Bobby Crawford, Rodney Jerkins, Andrew Lane. Engineers: Eric Scholtzer, Karl Heilborn, Jeff Vereb. Recorded at Gotham City Studios, Chicago, Illinois; The Sweat Shop, Atlanta,Georgia; Stone Recording, Chicago, Illinois; PNK Hideout, Atlanta, Georgia; Enterprise Studios, North Hollywood, California. R&B heartthrob Keith Sweat had been incorporating rappers' contributions into his songs for some time before this album, but never so forcefully as this. From the outset, its plain that this isn't just modern day quiet-storm music; the opening cut finds Busta Rhymes and Rah Digga underlining its carnality in no uncertain terms, while rapper Stringz strongly represents the female side of the story on "Whatcha Like." While some cuts on I DIDN'T SEE ME COMING are in the luxuriant, silk-sheets R&B style Sweat's fans are accustomed to, much of the album is occupied by percolating, in-your-face hip-hop production. In the end, this outing can provide a soundtrack to both a party night out and a steamy night in. SKU: 1047719

Svengali
Personnel: Gil Evans (conductor, acoustic & electric pianos); Trevor Koehler (soprano & baritone saxophones, flute); David Sanborn (alto saxophone); Billy Harper (tenor saxophone, flute); Howard Johnson (baritone saxophone, flugelhorn, tuba); Tex Allen, Hannibal Marvin Peterson, Richard Williams (trumpet); Sharon Freeman, Peter Levin (French horn); Joseph Daley (trombone, tuba); David Horowitz (synthesizer); Ted Dunbar (guitar); Herb Bushler (electric bass); Bruce Ditmas (drums); Susan Evans (percussion). Producers: Kenneth Noland, Gil Evans. Reissue producers: Donald Elfman, Naomi Yoshii. Recorded at Trinity Church and Philharmonic Hall, New York, New York in 1973. Includes liner notes by Maria Schneider. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Rescued from obscurity and the collectors' shops, the once-rare 1973 SVENGALI (Gil Evans' name scrambled) is back in print. Gil Evans emerged toward the end of the big band era as a composer and arranger, and collaborated withMiles Davis for several albums in the early 1960s (QUIET NIGHTS, SKETCHES OF SPAIN). Like Miles, Evans did not stand still musically and borrowed from jazz's outer limits as well as the progressive/experimental rock and electronic music of the late '60s/early '70s. The results sometimes sound like Frank Zappa (circa 1968-71) jamming with the Duke Ellington Orchestra on Mars in the year 2010: swinging, yet daring, electric, searing and probing. The Evans band featured players who would go on to be leaders in their own right: David Sanborn, Billy Harper (who contributes two tunes) and Hannibal Marvin Peterson. This is an important album in the history of both big band jazz and fusion. SKU: 6279288

With Fifty Italian Strings
Personnel includes: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet). Recorded in Milan, Italy in October 1959. Originally released on Jazzland (921). Includes liner notes by Peter Drew. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). If you're a romantic with a yenfor lush and dreamy music, WITH FIFTY ITALIAN STRINGS is the album for you. Chet Baker's trumpet soliloquizes over the aforementioned strings in carefree yet deliberate phrases. His voice glides smoothly and effortlessly over the legato accompaniment, while the arrangements are never too dense, weighty or dramatic. Very few jazz musicians have the ability to capture love and loss like Baker. On "Goodbye," the music becomes a slow dirge, with the trumpeter leading the procession; it's as if he's eulogizing his own heartbreak with sudden flourishes and tearful long tones. However, the pangs of love are best represented on "Deep In a Dream," where Baker likens his loneliness to a cigarette burning his fingers. "My hand doesn't hurt, but there's pain in my heart," he croons. WITH FIFTY ITALIAN STRINGS features Baker in a tranquil and cozy setting. Midtempo tunes such as "The Song Is You," round out the album with blissful, sunny lyrics. Saxophones, trombones, harp, flute and oboe also add color to the set's texture and mood. SKU: 4129992

Turn Ons
Turn On includes: Tim Gane, Sean O'Hagan. Turn On is a collaboration between Stereolab's Tim Gane and the High Llamas' Sean O'Hagan, with Stereolab drummer Andy Ramsay also on board. Though O'Hagan was a member of Stereolab for several years and has contributed in varying levels to the group's albums since, TURN ON is the first opportunity he and Gane have had to write together. As on High Llamas' records, all 11 of the tracks segue, and O'Hagan's trademark nods to pop history are all present and accounted for. Otherwise, the strictly instrumental TURN ON is mostly structured around Gane's patented drones and sound-for-sound's-sake tone poems. Laetitia Sadier'sadds wordless vocals on the wonderful "RU Tenone," the most tuneful song here. The project's (ironically?) bland name and stark cover art might suggest to casual observers that TURN ON is just more faceless electronica. But O'Hagan and Gane's immense pop gifts assure that there's much more going on here than just hypnosis. SKU: 4125622

Greatest Hits
Personnel includes: Dionne Warwick, Jeffrey Osborne, Elton John, Luther Vandross, Gladys Knight, The Spinners, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Mathis. Producers include: Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer-Sager, Barry Gibb, Karl Richardson, Albhy Galuten. This collection contains 3 new songs. Dionne Warwick's GREATEST HITS 1979-1990 is a welcome recapitulation of a spotty but often impressive period in the singer's career, which had been resuscitated by Arista head Clive Davis, who wasmasterminding the blossoming career of Warwick's cousin Whitney Houston at the same time. Warwick's voice, still outstanding two decades after her first hit, is what lifts these tracks above the pedestrian. The first cut, a version of Carole Bayer Sager's "That's What Friends Are For" was recorded with Elton John, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Wonder as the music industry's first high-profile AIDS benefit single. It's the album's best-known track, along with the hit "I'll Never Love This Way Again." SKU: 1013865
