Inflammable Material [PA]
Stiff Little Fingers came roaring out of Northern Ireland in 1979 with a ferocity and sense of black humor that could only have come from growing up in a war zone. While other contemporaries (such as the Undertones) tried theirbest to rise above the conflict in pop's embrace, Stiff Little Fingers chose to address the daily indignities and injustices head-on. Aggressive punk anthems such as "Wasted Life," which rejects violence as a solution, and the call-to-arms "Alternative Ulster," which envisions the creation of a new social order, are based in SLF's political awareness. INFLAMMABLE MATERIAL is among the most powerful political albums in punk rock history. Besides the government and military, the band tackles record company shenanigans on "Rough Trade," and the difficulty in loving someone from the wrong side of the fence, as in "Barbed Wire Love." Either way, Stiff Little Fingers managed to make even the worst scenarios come alive with black humor and gleefully guttural vocals. An oft neglected punk classic and a must for all serious students of the genre. SKU: 1078202

All Is Dream
Mercury Rev: Jonathan (vocals, acoustic guitar); Grasshopper (guitar); Jeff (piano, drums); Dave (Mellotron, bass). Additional personnel includes: Mary Gavazzi Fridmann (vocals); Tony Visconti (string arranger); Jason Russo (guitar); Rex L. White (pedal steel guitar); Larry Packer (violin); Suzanne Thorpe (flute); Marc Guy (French horn); Justin Russo (Fender Rhodes piano); Joel Eckhaus (bowed saw). Producers: Dave Fridmann, Grasshopper, Jonathan, Jeff Mercel, Max Lichtenstein. Engineers include: Dave Fridmann, Grasshopper, Johnathan. Mercury Rev dismantles the classic definition of a rock band. Members of this collective music project have retained separate, independent lives, convening periodically to record majestic sound collages--truly brilliant pieces of art-rock that pilfer as much from Pink Floyd's progressive psychedelia as they do from Phil Spector's grand, intricate production techniques. ALL IS DREAM is vintage Mercury Rev. The proper sequel to 1998's DESERTER'S SONGS comes off as another epic soundtrack to a movie never made--a collection of musical scenes scraped from the subconscious that is best heard continuously from start to finish. The sonic flow is so seamless that no one song stands out, yet each is unique. "Nite and Fog" combines meandering keyboards with a soft, gorgeous backdrop of string accompaniment, while "Tides of the Moon" is driven by a thick, walking bass line and ghostly musical saw. Impressively, the album maintains a cohesive quality despite the vast instrumental diversity displayed from track to track. Held together by waves of orchestral outbursts and vocalist Jonathan Donahue's strangely comforting, child-like vocal style, ALL IS DREAM is a symphonic-psychedelic meditation of the highest order. America
America: GerryBeckley (vocals, 6- & 12-string acoustic & electric guitars, piano, bass, chimes); Dewey Bunnell (vocals, 6- & 12-string acoustic guitars); Dan Peek (vocals, 12-string acoustic & 6-string electric guitars, piano). Additional personnel: Dave Lindley (electric & steel guitars); Dave Atwood, Kim Haworth (drums); Ray Cooper (percussion). Producers: Ian Samwell, Jeff Dexter, America. Recorded at Trident Studios & Morgan Studios, London, England. America's debut album is a classic case of being in the right place at the right time--a world where the noisier sounds of '60s rock had given way to the gentler strains of James Taylor and Crosby, Stills and Nash. America's particular gift was to combine Taylor's singer/songwriter esthetic with CSN's ripe harmonies, and their own unerring ear for a commercial hook. Which is why this album's "A Horse with No Name," and to a lesser degree "Sandman," despite a certain lyrical incoherence, were all over the radio in 1972. Though AMERICA's overall air of pastoral hippiedom ensures that it remains very much of its time, it's still well crafted enough to remain a good listen. SKU: 1006892

Let It Rain
Personnel includes: Tracy Chapman (vocals, guitar, electric guitar, electric banjo, clarinet, bass); Joe Gore (electric guitar, ukelele, piano); Greg Leisz (electric pedal steel, baritone guitar, dobro); Matt Brubeck (cello); Patrick Warren (accordion, tac piano); Patrick Warren (piano, organ, keyboards); Michael Webster (piano, vibraphone); Larry Taylor (upright bass); John Parish (bass); Joey Waronker (drums, tambourine, shaker, sound effects); Jeanie Tracy(background vocals). Recorded at The Paint Studios, Sausalito, California. Tracey Chapman's sixth album continues her tradition of immaculately crafted, self-effacing, deceptively low-key songs that consistently get to the root of things. That the most commercial track here ("Say Hallelujah") is about a funeral speaks volumes about Chapman's songwriting approach. "The bucket is kicked/The body is gone" she sings prosaically; "Eternal rest for the weary/Mourners party tonight." It's a catchy song that manages to retain its optimism despite its mortal subject. With LET IT RAIN Chapman seems to be settling in to an acceptance of her cult status after her initial success with "Fast Car" and the later "Give Me One Reason." This is high-quality songwriting in a natural setting. There are few flashy production tricks save a vocal effect or two, and no visible straining after a hit in evidence. Her emotions are laid bare time and again on tracks such as "In the Dark," with its confessional ambience, while "Hard Wired" is as close to a diatribe as Chapman gets, its subject the invasion of privacy in the name of commerce. LET IT RAIN is a hard-nosed, no-nonsense collection in a deceptively fragile setting. SKU: 1075787

Sticky Fingers
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals); Keith Richards,Mick Taylor (guitar, background vocals); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel: Ry Cooder (slide guitar); Paul Buckmaster (strings); Bobby Keys (saxophone); Jim Price (trumpet); Nicky Hopkins, Ian Stewart, Jim Dickinson, Jack Nitzche (piano); Billy Preston (organ); Rocky Dijon (congas); Jimmy Miller (percussion). Engineers include: Andy Johns, Jimmy Johnson, Glyn Johns. Recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, Muscle Shoals, Alabama and Olympic Studios, London, England. Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (Gateway Sound Studios). Sounding subdued, or at least more wary than most Stones albums, STICKY FINGERS' 1971 release betrayed the difficulties the band members were enduring. From Mick's breakup with the emotionally troubled Marianne Faithfull, to Keith's concern about his newborn son Marlon, the band found themselves re-evaluating their lives, and this depth of emotion made its way into the album. Be it in the terrifyingly spare "Sister Morphine" and "Moonlight Mile," or the near-dangerous electrified "Can't You Hear Me Knocking," the songs on STICKY FINGERS are anything but innocent. The lineup on this album solidified with Mick Taylor in place as a second guitarist. Recorded partially in the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama, the Stones were flirting with the blues, but adding a Southern soul flavor. Much of STICKY FINGERS is this tasteful mixture of blues and soul. Added to the brew are the spicy horn arrangements of saxophonist Bobby Keys and trumpet player Jim Price. The use of horns in the Stones' repertoire seemed inevitable--when they kick in during "Brown Sugar" and "Bitch," it's as if Keith's guitar is rebirthed in brass. STICKY FINGERS proved that the endless summer of the 1960s was over, but that the Stones would rock just as hard in the following decade. SKU: 4127137

Horrible Truth About Burma, The
This 1997 reissue includes 4 previously unreleased bonus tracks. Mission Of Burma had been a staggeringly loud live band, and when guitarist Roger Miller's tinnitus reached a dangerous level, the band had to call it quits, though not before one last tour. Recorded at various shows during that final tour, THE HORRIBLE TRUTH ABOUT BURMA is a posthumous collection of Mission Of Burma classics. Opening with a blistering version of the band's classic "That's When I Reach for My Revolver" (one of the four bonus tracks added to the Ryko re-issue), it's clear that Burma intended to go out with a bang. The track, along with several others, is played at breakneck speed and what must have been ear-splitting volume. Collectors should note that, despite radically altering the album running order, the Ryko version has been remastered, so that the sound quality is extraordinarily crisp, volume notwithstanding. Other standouts include "Tremolo," duringwhich the importance of Martin Swope's tape manipulations is made abundantly clear, absolutely scorching versions of "Go Fun, Burn Man" and the Stooges' "1970," and "Blackboard," highlighting Miller's scratchy, jagged guitar playing. An essential punk rock document. SKU: 1072001

Tiki Bar Is Open, The
John Hiatt & The Goners: John Hiatt (vocals, acoustic, electric & 12-string guitars, mandolin, harmonica, piano, harmonium); Sonny Landreth (acoustic, electric, 12-string & slide guitars, E-bow, background vocals); Dave Ranson (acoustic & electric basses); Kenneth Blevins (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Jay Joyce(guitar, keyboards, loops); Dave Bianco (piano); Julie Miller, New Reflections Men's Choir (background vocals). It's hard to imagine how singer-songwriter par excellence John Hiatt manages to keep churning out album after album of carefully wrought, emotionally loaded material. It must be that Nashville-derived work ethic tempered by a touch of mad genius. Whatever Hiatt's secret, we can all rejoice in the fact that THE TIKI BAR IS OPEN offers another batch of fine songs, sung in that patented sandpaper-soul voice. Hiatt's crack band, including guitar ace Sonny Landreth, chugs along spiritedly, supporting an amalgam of rock, country, blues, and R&B distinguished by Hiatt's plainspoken-but-trenchant lyrics. From the bluesy, violent scenarios presented in "I Know a Place" to the existential drinking song that is the title track, Hiatt is in fine form. To his credit, his inspiration doesn't flag towards the end of the album either. The last two songs are possibly the most impressive; "Come Home to You" is a touching troubled-relationship ballad that contains the sage line "there's no man so wicked he cannot come home, nor so good he passes each test." The closer "Farther Stars" is a genre-hopping affair that trails off with a long and surprisingly effective neo-psychedelic (.) jam on the order of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows." Just goes to show that you never know what to expect from a professional expectation-tweaker like Hiatt. SKU: 1064393

100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong... (The Premiere Collection/+DVD) [Digipak]
Full title: 100,000,000Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong... This release includes a bonus DVD. Bon Jovi: Richie Sambora, Jon Bon Jovi (vocals, guitar); Hugh McDonald (bass guitar); Tico Torres (drums); Alec John Such. Additional personnel include: Dave Stewart, Eric Bazilian, Garo Yellin, Jerry Cohen, Joe Perry, Kenny Aronoff, Lance Quinn, Mark Hudson, Pino Palladino, Shawn Pelton, Kurt Johnston, Rick Valenti, Jeff Kazee, Carol Brooks, Bobby Bandiera. Producers: Pat Leonard; Andy Johns; Jon Bon Jovi; Richie Sambora Compilation Producer: Obie O'Brien. Liner Note Authors: Pierre Robert; Jon Bon Jovi. To commemorate both the band's two-decade mark in the music industry and the selling of 100 million records, Bon Jovi culled together this four-CD/one-DVD collection. An homage to Elvis Presley, both in the title and cover concept (with each group member wearing a gold lame outfit), this set pays tribute to Bon Jovi's fans, many of whose written testimonials are sprinkled throughout the accompanying photo-packed booklet. Jon Bon Jovi also contributes explanations of specific songs and his own thoughts about the band's 20-year journey. Most importantly, the 50 tracks that make up the audio portion of FANS reinforce how this New Jersey outfit has managed to survive in a fickle market for so long--a wealth of well-written tunes built on a foundation of great hooks, heartfelt sentiment, and well-honed musicianship. There's plenty to sift through here, including demos of much-loved favorites ("Someday I'll Be Saturday Night"), soundtrack contributions ("Edge of a Broken Heart") and solid international B-sides ("Ordinary People"). Most impressive is the above-average amount of previously unreleased fare (including lead-vocal performances from each band member). The DVD is filled with rare archival material, including interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, making the set essential for Bon Jovi's millions of fans. SKU: 6576043

From There To Here (Greatest Hits)
Lonestar: Richie, Keech, Dean, Michael. Additional personnel includes: Matt Rollings (keyboards). Producers: Dann Huff, Don Cook, Wally Wilson. In the realm of country music, self-contained groups have never been the most common denizens of the charts, the format being much more sympathetic to solo artists and duos. However, like Alabama, Sawyer Brown, and a handful others, Lonestar has persevered to become one of the most successful acts on the country scene. This disc, a collection of their most popular songs, stands as a monument to that success. It's filled to the brim with tightly arranged, expertly performed tunes that mix country, pop, and rock while maintaining just the right amount of twang. Lonestar's not afraid of a little bar-room boogie, as on "You Walked In," or a bit of post-Eagles country pop ("Everything's Changed"). However, they're also proficient in the power-ballad area, as exemplified on picture-perfect radio bait like "Amazed," "I'm Already There" (which in anotherera could have been an Air Supply hit), and the previously unreleased, spiritually oriented "I Pray."
