VH1 Storytellers
Some of the proceeds from this album benefit City Of Hope. Digitally remastered by Stephen Marcussen (Stephen Marcussen Mastering). Prompted by the success of the hugely popular cable series VH1 Storytellers, Interscope Records highlights selected songs from such legendary artists as David Bowie ("China Girl"), The Bee Gees ("How Deep Is Your Love") and James Taylor ("Mexico"). The 15 songs on VH1 STORYTELLERS are all vibrant performances. Though each song has its own story, tone, and feel, the seamless mix and wonderful performances from Dave Matthews Band ("Crash Into Me"), Jewel ("Who Will Save Your Soul"), and John Mellencamp ("Jack & Diane") transfix the listener from the start. Sheryl Crow's version of "Strong Enough" features Stevie Nicks, while Nicks herself performs a killer version of "Edge of Seventeen."VH1 STORYTELLERS also includes excellent songs from Elvis Costello ("Just A Memory"), Lisa Loeb ("Stay"), and Counting Crows ("Rain King"). America Town
Five For Fighting: John Ondrasik (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Nikki Harris (vocals); Greg Wattenberg, Bob Schneck (electric guitar); Ralph Ferris (violin, viola); Victor Lawrence (cello); Shane Keister (piano); Mark Montague, Sheldon Gomberg (bass); Dorian Crozier (drums, percussion); Robert Medici (drums). Engineers: Brian Scheuble, Gregg Wattenberg, Jack Joseph Puig. Recorded at Mad Dog Studios, Burbank, California and EMI Studios, Santa Monica, California. "Superman (It's Not Easy)" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. It's not difficult to see why Five For Fighting struck a chord with young American audiences. In their music one can hear a bit of Dave Matthews's vocal warmth, Tonic's pop sensibility, Train's melodic soulfulness, and Counting Crows' intensity. This is not to say that the ceaselessly infectious and hook-filled AMERICA TOWNis derivative. It's just that Five For Fighting are tapping into a gestalt of which they are as much a part as any of the aforementioned bands. They also happen to be quite good at plying their pop-rock trade; constructing enough classic melodies, memorable choruses, and gritty ruminations to hopelessly ensnare anyone enamored of folk-rock circa 2001. Hooks, warmth, charisma, what more could one reasonably ask for from a humble American rock band? SKU: 1072320

Stonedhenge [Remastered]
This is their third album, prepared for CD from the original master tapes. Ten Years After's third album is one of those artifacts that simply screams late '60s, which isto say its production is more than a little trippy, and it's also all over the stylistic map. "I Can't Live Without Lydia," for example, features keyboardist Chick Churchill making vaguely Brubeck-ian noises on up to four overdubbed pianos simultaneously. The next track, "Skoobly-Ooobly-Doobob," is a brief scat blues improvisation with guitar hero Alvin Lee playing and singing in unison, as Ric Lee's drums, just barely audible, putter about in both stereo channels seemingly at random. The album's centerpiece, of course, is "Hear Me Callin'," a sort of psychedelic take on John Lee Hooker-style blues complete with fashionable phasing effects (it was a substantial radio hit). However, true fans justifiably swear by the 55-second percussion version of "Three Blind Mice" that follows. SKU: 1074304

Tim McGraw And The Dancehall Doctors
Personnel: Tim McGraw (vocals); James Lowry (acoustic guitar); Darran Smith, Jonn Prestia, Byron Gallimore (electric guitar); Denny Hemingson (guitar, steel & baritone guitars, mellobar); Bob Minner (guitar, dobro); Dean Brown (mandolin, fiddle); Jelly Roll Johnson (harmonica); Steve Nathan (Wurlitzer piano); Jeff McMahon (keyboards); John Marcus (bass); Billy Mason (drums); David Dunkley (percussion); Chris Rodriguez, Kim Carnes, Don Henley, Greg Barnhill, Gene Miller, Timothy B. Schmit (background vocals). Producers: Byron Gallimore, Tim McGraw, Darran Smith. Tim McGraw has sold millions of records by shuttling between pleasantly cornpone neo-honky tonk and Mark Wills/John Michael Montgomery-style lite-pop balladry. With TIM MCGRAW AND THE DANCEHALL DOCTORS, however, the singer pulls off the wholly unexpected feat of creating an album so richly textured and boldly mature, it makes much of his earlier work seem silly by comparison. Completely absent are the usual drippy sentiments and good 'ol boy bluster; in their place are thoroughly adult themes and effortlessly soulful vocal performances. Like Waylon Jennings two decades earlier, McGraw makes his artistic breakthrough by recording with his touring band. Tracked in an old mansion a la LED ZEPPELIN IV, the disc has an energetic earthiness rarely achieved in contemporary country. The songs are, if not as instantly memorable as "Indian Outlaw," much more substantial, and the playing is exuberant throughout. Perhaps the most striking thing about the record, though, is its distinctly country-influenced (rather than country) feel. In fact, the album sounds like it would fit very nicely in the Eagles' catalog, right between ON THE BORDER and ONE OF THESE NIGHTS. Obviously, it'll take a few more records of similar quality for history to judge Tim McGraw in as favorable a light as Don Henley and crew. In the meantime, though, TIM MCGRAW AND THE DANCEHALL DOCTORS deserves to be hailed as one of the first albums by a Nashvillecountry artist to actually get rock right. SKU: 1077896

New Found Glory [ECD]
New Found Glory: Jordan Pundik (vocals); Chad Gilbert, Steve Klein (guitar); Ian Grushka (bass); Cyrus Bolooki (drums). Recorded at Elysian Fields Studios, Boca Raton, Florida. Thishigh-energy quartet performs Blink 182-style pop-punk that owes more of a sonic debt to Green Day than to first-generation types like the Buzzcocks, which means the accent here is on pop. As single-minded in their pursuit of this aesthetic as any great rock band should be, New Found Glory keep it exclusively fast and loud, never pausing for anything as transgressive as a ballad (the title of "Ballad For the Lost Romantics" notwithstanding); they don't even bother adding additional instruments to the arrangements. The guitar-bass-drums axis reigns unchallenged throughout the album. The only adornment is consistently spot-on vocal harmonies that add just the right amount of pop tinge to New Found Glory's relentlessly hard-charging tunes. SKU: 1067088

Panorama (Live At The Village Vanguard)
Personnel: Jim Hall (guitar); Greg Osby (alto saxophone); Art Farmer (flugelhorn); Slide Hampton (trombone);Kenny Barron, Geoff Keezer (piano); Scott Colley (bass); Terry Clarke (drums). Recorded live at The Village Vanguard, New York, New York from December 4-8, 1996. Includes liner notes by Devra Hall And Jim Hall. A musical adventurer, Jim Hall is always in search of unexplored territory. Thinking it would be both fun and challenging to play with a different special guest artist each night, he invited pianists Geoff Keezer and Kenny Barron, trombonist Slide Hampton, flugelhornist Art Farmer, and saxophonist Greg Osby to do just this with his trio at New York's famed Village Vanguard. While much is left to chance in the hands of these jazz innovators, the music bubbles with vitality and passion. Recorded live in 1996, Hall and company perform unique versions of "The Answer is Yes" and "Furnished Flats," among others. On the former, pianist Kenny Barron burns bold and fiery bebop riffs, while on the latter, the tenor player Greg Osby reaches down to the lowest note on his horn as he pushes the tonal boundaries of the blues. Essential Skeeter Davis, The
Personnel includes: Skeeter Davis, Betty Jack Davis (vocals); Bill Walker (conductor); Chet Atkins (guitar). Producers: Chet Atkins, Anita Kerr, Felton Jarvis, Ronny Light. Compilation producers: Paul Williams, Colin Escott. Engineers include: Bill Porter, Tommy Strong, Chuck Steitz. Recorded between May 1953 and January 1971. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. All tracks are stereo except track 1. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Davis' run of country hits covered a remarkable 20-year span, from the Davis Sisters' "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know" to the aptly titled early '70s track "I Can't Believe That it's Over." The single-disc THE ESSENTIAL SKEETER DAVIS does a solid job of encapsulating a career diverse and successful enough to merit a more comprehensive retrospective. ESSENTIAL shows the full-circle course of Davis' career, from her early country hits throughgirl-group pop and back again to country. Her 1962 surprise crossover hit "The End of the World" opened the door to pop radio, and Davis strode through it confidently with the harmony-drenched pop songs that make up the middle of this compilation. When the British invasion forever altered American pop radio, Davis returned to her country roots, scoring big with "What Does it Take (to Keep a Man Like You Satisfied)" and "Fuel to the Flame." Throughout, Davis' clear, innocent vocals remain a constant, as does the theme of heartbreak. Like the Everly Brothers, Davis exploits harmony to communicate the sweet sadness of longing and loss. The result is a splendid collection of country pop. SKU: 1000612

Blur
Blur: Damon Albarn (vocals, keyboards); Graham Coxon (guitar); Alex James (bass); Dave Rowntree (drums). Recorded in London, England and Iceland. It's okay, America, you can come out now! We don't sound like Duran Duran anymore! Me and the rest of the lads had us a meeting and decided it was time to give the eighties thing a bit of a rest. Don't worry, we didn't throw away all our fab analog synth gear, we just updated things a little. We moved out of that expensive umpteen-track studio and into our mate's mum's garage to get just the right feel for this one. We were so busy reinventing our sound that we didn't even have time to come up with a proper name for the album. What's in a name, though, as long as we've still got the pop hooks coming out our ears? We've been listening to some of that lo-fi Yank stuff and hanging out with some of the blokes from Stereolab in between reading all those fan mags that make up imaginary battles betweenus and Oasis, who care more about being the Beatles than we ever did. So the stage is set for our big American takeover. Now all we've got to do is get that bugger at the record company to stop calling our singer "dude." SKU: 1003293

Low On Ice [ECD]
This is and enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Recorded in 1995. Before he became the notorious princeof digital noise terror in Atari Teenage Riot, Alec Empire was an originator of a particularly individualistic form of modern electronica. LOW ON ICE, recorded while on tour with ATR, is one of Empire's quieter, more introspective sides. He draws on early Aphex Twin (minus the abrasiveness), some of Robert Babicz's minimal psychoacoustic experiments, Geir Jennsen in his Biosphere guise, and even Eno's early textures. The title track is the audio equivalent of a long trek across an arctic flow. Your body is running out of gas while machines putter out a faint pseudo-beat behind which a lo-fi repetitive figurine of a synth chord trudges. "Metal Dub" seems to take "Low on Ice" and submerge it in an echo chamber, snares drowning in an oily sea while electronic globules squirt queasily across the elongated stereo spectrum. Empire imparts upon the soul one seriously sharp chill. SKU: 1058314

Once Upon A Time [Remastered]
Simple Minds: Mel Gaynor (vocals, drums); Jim Kerr(vocals); Charlie Burchill (guitar); Michael MacNeil (piano, keyboards); John Giblin (bass). Additional personnel includes: Robin Clark (vocals). Recorded at Right Track Studios, New York and BEarsville Studios, Bearsville, New York. Simple Minds gained belated US chart success with "(Don't You) Forget About Me" and a distinctly transatlantic burr covered this, the ensuing album. Producers Jimmy Iovine and Bob Clearmountain sculpted an unambiguous sound where crowd-pleasing anthems invoked a genuine excitement. Loud, forthright and shorn of subtlety, ONCE UPON A TIME shows the group's core trio - Jim Kerr (vocals), Charlie Burchill (guitar) and Mick McNeil (keyboards) - working together with genuine empathy, while a revamped rhythm section underpins the material with sinewy precision. They combine to create what many consider to be Simple Minds' most exciting and exhilarating release. SKU: 1079035

Old Codes New Chaos
Were you expecting some sort of oddball Brazilian pop combo, what with a name like Fila Brazillia? Guess again! Steve Cobby, the man behind Fila and big cahona of U.K. down-tempo/trip-hop label Pork, pulls so many rabbits out of so many hats that every spin of the disc is another excursion into realms both magical and mysterious. OLD CODES is a collection of early-'90s singles, new recordings, and various ephemera from the Fila tape archives. The tracks are so brilliantly sequenced that one might never think that all theworks here are from wholly unrelated recording sessions; Cobby's sense of order is the prime component in the multi-colored Fila universe. Opening with the cooing maritime vocals and salty sea-air synths of "Mermaids," and rippling all the way through the glittering synth-funk of "The Light of Jesus" and the irresistible percolations of "Fila Funk," OLD CODES ranks as perhaps Cobby's best overall work. Forget any cliches being administered within the trip-hop cabal--Cobby's beats are the ones to beat. OLD CODES is catchy in the way that the best '60s spy-show themes are, and is sure to make both your frontal lobes and front toes quiver in elastic delight. SKU: 1060895

Producers: Andrew Lloyd Webber, Nigel Wright. 73 minutes of playing time, from a show that originally ran for some 15 to 20 minutes, means that this album must be a recording of a contemporary production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's biblical musical. In fact, it is from the highly successful 1991 London Palladium revival whichstarred Australian actor and pop star Jason Donovan as Joseph and Linzi Hateley as the Narrator. Donovan had a UK number 1 with 'Any Dream Will Do', and the album itself also topped the chart. Nine months after its release it was reported to have sold 500,000 copies. SKU: 3103702

Hall Of Fame
The Moody Blues: Justin Haywood, John Lodge, Graeme Edge, Ray Thomas. Additional personnel: Paul Bliss, Bias Boshell, Gordon Marshall (keyboards); Susan Shattock, Tracy Graham (background vocals); The World Festival Orchestra. Recorded live at The Royal Albert Hall, London, England on May 1, 2000. If you're not a fan of the original orchestral-rockers, you might wonder about the point of releasing yet another Moody Blues live disc with many of the same songs heard in other versions on previous albums. But hardcore Moody-heads won't worry about such matters--they'll simply delight at the opportunity tohear their heroes tackle a mixture of classics from their Mellotron-mania days ("Tuesday Afternoon," Legend of a Mind," and of course, the chestnut par excellence "Nights in White Satin"). The more recent material such as "Isn't Life Strange," and "Your Wildest Dreams" has proven the group to have a far longer shelf life than might have previously been expected. Assistance from the World Festival Orchestra adds to the proceedings' grandiose symphonic sweep. SKU: 1045680

Sickness, The [PA]
Disturbed: David Draiman (vocals); Dan Donegan (guitar); Fuzz (bass); Mike Wengren (drums, programming). Additional personnel: Frank De Lamora, Enrique Santiago (programming). Recorded at Groovemaster Studios, Chicago, Illinois. Disturbed's debut found the band crawling through themire of contemporary metal staples for a cohesive direction. The staccato primal scream that became the band's trademark helped break the single, "Down With The Sickness," in tandem with the song's Tool-meets-Pantera rhythmic complexities. From the rap metal grooves of "Voices" and "Stupify" to the neo-reggae vibe of "Violence Fetish," THE SICKNESS was a musical forecast of things to come for Disturbed. "Numb" found the band making a foray into more melodic and progressive territory, an approach they would further develop with 2002's BELIEVE. SKU: 1074216

Duke In Washington, The (Classic Live Recordings 1943-1962)
Full performer name: Duke Ellington And His Famous Orchestra. Personnel includes: Duke Ellington (leader, piano); Betty Roche, Kay Davis (vocals); Johnny Hodges, Otto Hardwick (alto saxophone); Jimmy Hamilton, Skippy Williams (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Al Sears, Paul Gonsalves (tenor saxophone); Harry Carney (baritone saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet); Ray Nance (trumpet, violin); Clark Terry, Willie Cook, Wallace Jones, Taft Jordon, Rex Stewart (trumpet); Joe Nanton, Wilbur DeParis, Lawrence Brown, Britt Woodman, Juan Tizol, Quentin Jackson (trombone); Fred Guy, Aaron Bell, Oscar Pettiford, Junior Ranglin, Jimmy Wood (bass); Sam Woodyard, Sonny Greer, Dave Black (drums). Principally recorded between December 8, 1943 & April 29, 1969 in Washington, D.C. Includes liner notes by Theodore R. Hudson. Digitally remastered by Jack Towers. This collection finds Duke Ellington and his orchestra in and around his birthplace of Washington D.C. from World War Two through the late 1960s. The recordings range from scratchy radio broadcast dates from military shows to grand concert performances at Howard University and even a moving solo selection from the Nixon White House. The listener is provided with a large swath of Ellington's greatness including rousing performances of Johnny Mercer's "G.I. Jive," "Happy-Go-Lucky Local,"and "Take the 'A' Train." Most selections are typically truncated, but the lone epic "(A Tone Parallel to) Harlem" also offers a taste of Ellington's magnificent command of the long form. As this collection illustrates, Duke and his men obviously saved something special for the nation's capital. SKU: 1036055

Enema Of The State [ECD]
Thisis an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Blink 182: Tom DeLonge (vocals, guitar); Mark Hoppus (vocals, bass); Travis Barker (drums). Additional personnel: Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (keyboards). Blink 182 embodies all the rock & roll verities, from savage, power chord-driven, guitar-bass-and-drums attack to a carefully cultivated tastelessness (see album title and cover art), bolstered by plenty of attitude (the abundance of tattoos doesn't hurt either). The band's post-Green Day pop-punk leaps out of the speakers with zero subtlety and maximum aggression. Guitars alternately blaze and chug over breakneck rhythms, while the vocal melodies pay homage to the time-honored pop hook tradition. Despite the band's four-on-the-floor approach, the arrangements are regulated by careful, radio-minded production for a more accessible sound. SKU: 5058297

Babylon By Bus [Remastered]
Bob Marley & The Wailers: Bob Marley (vocals, guitar); Junior Marvin, Al Anderson (guitar); Tyrone Downie (keyboards); Wire Lindo (organ, Clavinet); Aston "Familyman" Barrett (bass); Carlton Barrett (drums); Alvin "Seeco" Patterson (percussion). I Threes: Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffiths (background vocals). Producer: Chris Blackwell, Jack Nuber. Reissue producers: Bill Levenson, Maxine Stowe. Recorded live in Paris, France; Copenhagen, Denmark; London, England & Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Originally released on Island (11). Remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Capturing Bob Marley and the Wailers at their creative peak, BABYLON BY BUS is a righteously grooving collection of recordings from the group's 1978 European tour. An excellent companion to 1975's JAH LIVE, BABYLON BY BUS includes energetic versions of several tracks from the classic 1977 album EXODUS as well as a sprinkling of earlier material. The album is a textbook study in reggae's sultry rhythmic power, and the Barrett Brothers (Aston "Family Man" Barrett on bass and Carlton on drums) demonstrate throughout why they are regarded as one of the most influential rhythm sections of all time. Although the majority of Marley's material is intensely political, the music is so full of light, space and subtle dynamics that the worries of the world seem to be instantly replaced by an overwhelming urge to dance. Often audibly whippingthe crowd into a joyful frenzy, Marley and company present a fine example of live music- making at it's purest and most soulful. SKU: 1063777
