Live Live Live
Principally recorded live in Belgium in 1988. Includes liner notes by Bryan Adams. This generous concert recording from Bryan Adams's 1988 European concert tour captures the charismatic Canadian leading a solid band through all his hits in front of 50,000 rain-soaked, Adams-crazed Belgians. Nearly every monster hit is here, from early thunderous hits like "Cuts Like a Knife" and "Run to You," to more recent fare like "Into the Fire." Adams doesn't stray too far from the original songs in the live setting. Adams delivers his hits, whose punchy choruses make for crowd-pleasing concert fare. A seasoned performer, Adams knows when to let the audience take a chorus, and like many such recordings, LIVE! LIVE! LIVE! includes its share of sing-alongs. "Kids Wanna Rock," in which he inveighs against "computerized crap" and new wave haircuts, succinctlysums up the ethos of Adams and his legions of fans at the time. Whether he's sounding a John Cougar Mellencamp note on "Take Me Back," doing a rocked-up cover of "Walking After Midnight," or delivering aching power ballads like "Heaven," Adams is on top of his game and giving the people what they want. And you can't help but a get a vicarious rush from the crowd noise that greets the opening chords of "Run to You." SKU: 5070282

Tubular Bells Vol.2
Personnel includes: Mike Oldfield (various instruments); Vivian Stanshall (vocals); Sally Oldfield, The Pilt-Down Man. The 19-year old Oldfield played virtually everything on the mostly instrumental TUBULAR BELLS, which required hundreds of over-dubs in the recording process (2300 in total, according to Rolling Stone magazine). The effect he created, a densely layered, richly textured sound, put "minimalist" musical ideas in a pop music context, and was highly successful. TUBULAR BELLS was the first album to be released on the Virgin label. Excerpts from TUBULAR BELLS were used in the film "The Exorcist." A single version, sometimes called "Theme From The Exorcist" became atop-10 hit, and the album hit number-1 on the British album charts. SKU: 4122500

Ellington Suites, The
Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Cat Anderson, Clark Terry, Shorty Baker, Ray Nance, Cootie Williams, Mercer Ellington, Eddie Preston, Money Johnson, Johnny Coles (trumpet); Britt Woodman, Quentin Jackson, John Sanders, Vince Prudente, Chuck Connors, Booty Wood, Malcolm Taylor (trombone); Harold Minerve, Norris Turney, Paul Gonsalves, Harold Ashby, Harry Carney, Russ Andrews, Russell Procope, Johnny Hodges, Jimmy Hamilton (reeds); Wulf Freedman (electric bass); Joe Benjamin, Jimmy Woode (bass); Jimmy Johnson, Rufus Jones (drums). Recorded in New York, New York on February 25 and April 1 & 14, 1959, April 27, 1971, and October 5, 1972. Originally released on Pablo (2310-762). Includes liner notes by Stanley Dance. In 1959, Duke Ellington played at an arts festival in England and met Queen Elizabeth. So enchanted by Her Majesty was he that upon his return to America, Ellington composed the six-part "Queen's Suite." Ellington recorded one copy and sent it to the Queen, never intending it to be released commercially. The two other suites collected here were similarly composed for specific events rather than as commercial releases, but all three provide fascinating glimpses into the musical maturation of an American compositional giant. Beginning with the evocative "Sunset and the Mockingbird," inspired by a birdsong Ellington chanced to hear when in England, the suite's other sections also echo sounds and sights of the natural world: the northern lights, lightning bugs and frogs. Ellington wrote "The Goutelas Suite" to commemorate the renovation or a 13th century French chateau. The suite conveys the flurry of activity of the building process in the rousing "Get-With-Itness" and the majesty of the finished product in the shiveringly beautiful "Something." "The UWIS Suite," (shorthand for University of Wisconsin), was written during a 1972 Ellington Festival there. Its short middle section, "Klop," is Ellington's lone polka. SKU: 1016598

Far Beyond Driven
Pantera: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Dimebag Darrel (guitar); Rex (bass); Vinnie Paul (drums). Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. "I'm Broken" was nominated for Best Metal Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. Not since the last asteroid collision with planet Earth untold eons ago has there been a apocalyptic event to equal the musical Krakatoa that is Pantera's FAR BEYOND DRIVEN. Walking a stylistic line somewhere between the melodious crunch pop of Metallica and the punkish thrashorama of Helmet, Pantera channels their raging energy into songs that function as aural letterbombs from hell--designed to detonate in your face. Never have records quite as rude as FAR BEYOND DRIVEN (or Nine Inch Nail's THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL) broken out at #1 on the Top 200 of Billboard's pop charts. There must be a reason. Immerse yourself in the first single off of FAR BEYOND DRIVEN, the thrashing "I'm Broken," and you'll get a good idea as to the method behind Pantera's madness--and what makes them such trendsetters in the thermonuclear epoch after heavy metal, speed metal and thrash have run their course. The arrangement opens with a classic Led Zeppelin rifforama (almost a blues figure); then they ride along on a single chord over an odd, slightly spastic rhythm figure a la Helmet; finally they allow these conflicting notions of noize to collide in hyperspace, setting the stage for a pithy, pulverizing guitar orgasm by Dimebag Darrell that is blissfully melodic, almost in spite of itself. Or check out "Use My Third Arm," a terrifying journey into the world of police brutality. Vocalist Phillip Anselmo froths and rants like an enraged Electrolux, sucking in noise and spewing out hostility over Dimebag's jittery power-riffs. Drummer Vinnie Paul turns popular rhythm conventions on their head, letting the bass and guitar carry the carnage while choosing to spray short bursts of small arms fire in an arrhythmic fury like a deranged dixieland drummer. When Pantera finally tucks usall in with an affectionate cover of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan," it's as if they're trying to recollect a romantic folk song from some bygone era. As for the rest of FAR BEYOND DRIVEN...well, you want heavy--this is heavy. SKU: 3100536

Arbour Zena
Personnel: Keith Jarrett (piano); Martin Gutesha (conductor); Jan Garbarek (soprano & tenor saxophones); Charlie Haden (bass); Stuttgart Radio Symphony. Recordedat Studio Bauer, Ludwigsburg, Germany in October 1975. ARBOUR ZENA offers three Keith Jarrett compositions for orchestra, piano, bass, and saxophones. Jarrett had earlier shown his interest in contemporary classical composition, first with the ambitious IN THE LIGHT and then with LUMINESCENCE, the latter featuring strings rather than piano, laced with Jan Garbarek's saxophone improvisations. The string section here is drawn from the ranks of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. The scoring is subtle, with an emotive shimmering quality--after an extended piano break by Jarrett on "Runes," the strings emerge seemingly out of the piano itself. The meditative mood is sustained throughout the set. Charlie Haden's rich bass tone offers a nice contrast to Garbarek's crystalline timbre. SKU: 1012039

Silence
Blindside: Christian (vocals); Simon (guitar, background vocals); Tomas (bass); Marcus (drums). Additional personnel: Jamie Muhoberac, Howard Benson (keyboards). Recorded at Bay 7, Valley Village, California; Sparky Dark Studios, Calabasas, California. In the spirit of South African nu-metallists Seether, who sound for all the world like U.S.-born and bred heavy rockers, comes Blindside, who are from, of all places, Sweden. Sure, Swedish garage-rockers like the Hives had already made themselves known, but who would have guessed that such American-sounding nu-metal would originate in that part of the world as well? Turns out Blindside has enough of the heavy rock moves down cold to break through in America. No wonder--their razorblade guitars, hoarse, intense vocals, and jackhammer drums drive home a vision fully as intense as any oftheir hard-rock peers in any country. The sound of sonic chaos sometimes comes in the form of SILENCE. SKU: 1075728

Amos Lee
Personnel: Amos Lee (vocals, guitar); Adam Levy (guitar, background vocals); Kevin Breit (acoustic guitar, resonator guitar, mandolin); Nate Skiles (mandolin); H.S. Alexandra Leem (viola); Larry Gold (cello); Norah Jones (piano, Wurlitzer piano, background vocals); Devin Greenwood (Wurlitzer piano, Hammond b-3 organ, background vocals); Lee Alexander (bass guitar, drum); Chris Thomas, Jaron Olevsky (bass guitar); James Gadson, Fred Berman (drums, background vocals); Dan Rieser (drums). Recording information: The Magic Shop, New York, New York (2004); Sear Sound Studio, New York, New York (2004). There's no denying that Norah Jones's name isthrown around a lot regarding her labelmate Amos Lee's Blue Note debut. Lee gained renown through touring with her, and Jones and her band are heard lending a hand on the album. Other than a tendency to keep things on the quiet side, though, the comparisons pretty much stop there. Where Jones's piano-based music draws heavily from her love of jazz standards, Lee is another story altogether. His combination of low-key folk-rock and old-school R&B positions him as something of a Bill Withers for the 21st century. Indeed, his silky/soulful voice and emotive, acoustic-guitar-based songs reveal a strong Withers influence, something all too rare in contemporary pop music, R&B or otherwise. Tracks such as "Arms of a Woman" reveal Lee to be a dyed-in-the-wool romantic, but "Bottom of the Barrel" and others indicate his ability to step outside of love-song tropes for a well-rounded songwriting approach. Best Of Blur, The
Initial pressings of THE BEST OF included a live bonus disc. Blur: Damon Albarn (vocals, keyboards); Graham Coxon (guitar); Alex James (bass); Dave Rowntree (drums). Producers include: Stephen Street, William Orbit, Steve Lowell, Steve Power, Stephen Hague. Oasis may feature more prominently on the radar of mainstream American pop fans with their overt Beatle-isms, but quintessential Britpop band Blur ultimately took a much more interesting path throughout the '90s. This 18-track compilation skips around in tracing the band's origins as part of the Madchester movement ("There's No Other Way," "She's So High") through flirtations with Euro-funk ("Girls and Boys"), American indie rock ("Song 2"), and XTC-like pop ("For Tomorrow"). Although Damon Albarn's distinctively English-accented phrasing and Ray Davies-likepenchant for writing about distinctly English scenarios makes for brilliant pop songs like "Parklife" and "Country House," it also explains the disinterest of notoriously fickle American music fans. Other intriguing compositions featured here include a pair of tracks from 1999's criminally overlooked 13--the singalong chant "Tender," with its accompanying gospel choir, and the irresistibly jangly "Coffee and TV." Also recorded specifically for inclusion on this collection is the hypnotic "Music is My Radar," featuring plenty of harmonies, fuzz guitar, and a militaristic groove. The limited edition version of THE BEST OF features a second disc of 10 live tracks recorded at London's Wembley Arena in December 1999, during Blur's 10th Anniversary Singles Night Tour. La Luna
Personnel: Sarah Brightman (vocals, keyboards); Paul Bateman (conductor); Gunther Haas (guitar); Peter Murray, Frank Peterson, Jan-Eric Kohrs, Carsten Heusmann (keyboards); Trevor Barry (bass); Martin "Frosty" Beedle (drums); Gillian McDonagh (percussion); Princessa, Eve, English National Choir (background vocals). Engineers include: Michael Soltad, John Timperley, Colin Boland. Recorded at Angel Studios, London, England; Smecky Studios, Prague, Czech Republic; Centro Arteria, Milan, Italy; Nemo Studios, Hamburg, Germany; Timps Studio, Maidenhead. The word "angelic" almost seems an understatement when applied to the golden voice of Sarah Brightman. She makes Enya sound like Tom Waits, and LA LUNA is full of tunes that allow Brightman to freely weave her vocal magic. She moves convincingly through a number of styles here, the atmospheric soundscapes of the introductory "La Lune" giving way to the electronica-tinged "Winter in July," which in turn leads into a delicately updated arrangement of the British folk tune "Scarborough Fair," made popular in the '60s by Simon & Garfunkel. Thick washes of strings mate with electronic percussion on Brightman's version of the Procol Harum classic "A Whiter Shade of Pale." On "How Fair This Place," she shows off the impressive operatic chops that helped her to earn her diva stripes. Ultimately, whether she's sweetly subverting folk tunes, ably adapting classical material, or reigning like a pop princess over very contemporary arrangements, Brightman wields a voice that never fails to enchant. Songs In A Minor [ECD]
Personnel: Alicia Keys (vocals, various instruments, piano, keyboards); Jimmy Cozier (vocals): Gerald "G" Flowers, Arty White (guitar); Miri (violin); Isaac Hayes (Fender Rhodes piano); Brian Cox (keyboards); Richie Good (upright bass); Tim Shider, Vic Flowers, Rufus Jackson (electric bass); Norman Hedman (percussion); Kerry "Krucial" Brothers, Anthony Nance (programming); Cindy Mizelle, Tammy Saunders, Andricka Hall, Paul L. Green, Kandi B (background vocals). Producers: Jermaine Dupri, Brian McKnight, Alicia Keys, Kerry "Krucial" Brothers. Engineers include: Gerry Brown, Brian Frye, Kerry "Krucial" Brothers. Alicia Keys won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. SONGS IN A MINOR won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "Fallin'" won the 2002 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song. Picture RobertaFlack with hip-hop trimmings or D'Angelo coming at the world from a female perspective and you get an idea of the immense talent welling up from musical prodigy Alicia Keys. Blessed with a soulful voice, mature-beyond-her-years songwriting, and a classically trained command of piano, it's no wonder music mogul Clive Davis brought the 20-year old performer over from Arista as one of the flagship artists for his new label J Records. Keys displays impressive range on this primarily self-penned debut that finds her taking part in arranging and/or production on every cut, once again redeeming Davis's instincts. Besides the well-earned buzz for the gripping love-and-loathe single "Fallin'," Keys earns high marks for fusing rap beats and vintage Aretha on a confidently delivered cover of Prince's "How Come You Don't Call Me." Elsewhere, the native New Yorker's flow finds her traversing the same ground as early-'70s Stevie Wonder on the thought-provoking "The Life," while "Goodbye" proves to be the quintessential Quiet Storm kiss-off. Keys wraps up SONGS with a sanctified mix of stride piano, lush strings, and gospel-flavored back-up singers on "Lovin' U." SKU: 1070971

Faust IV
Includes linernotes by David Ilic. Widely acknowledged as one of Faust's finest works, IV finds these ground-breaking German proggies strutting their collective Euro-stuff on a collection of songs more varied and lighthearted than their previous releases. Starting off with the genre-defining "Krautrock," the band sets up sheets of electronic sound that bounce off each other endlessly, creating a kaleidoscopic feel, while the insistent beat conjures up images of great drooling beasts jumping incessantly up and down. The band steps outside of its comfort zone on "The Sad Skinhead," a loopy reggae sendup. Elsewhere there are quiet, acoustic moments amid the electronic frenzy. "Jennifer" and "It's A Bit Of A Pain," while maintaining the deconstructed feel of the other tunes, are downright poignant. SKU: 3104368

I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got
Personnel: Sinead O'Connor (vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards, percussion, programming); Dave Munday (acoustic guitar, piano); Andy Rourke (acoustic guitar, bass); Marco Pirroni (electric guitar); Steve Wickham (fiddle); Jah Wobble (bass); John Reynolds (drums). Recorded at S.T.S, Dublin, Ireland. This is the impassioned, creative breakthrough Sinead O'Connor was working toward with her extraordinary debut THE LION AND THE COBRA. Boldly combining O'Connor's hard-rock, alternative-rock, hip-hop and Celtic-folk influences, I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN'T GOT was widely heralded as one of the best albums of 1990. On it O'Connor proves herself a first-ratewriter, articulate, perceptive and penetrating. Her vocal magic is well under control, from tempestuous command to all-out fury; she shows that she is a world-class singer, way beyond the restrictions of being an alternative-rock diva. The obvious highlight among highlights is O'Connor's definitive rendition of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" (originally performed by The Family). Other remarkable songs here include "Black Boys On Mopeds," a political treatise on Britian's racial affairs, and "The Emperor's New Clothes," a pop-funk number in which O'Connor provides some anecdotal background for her seemingly strange behavior. There is not one disappointing track on this album. SKU: 1002692

Salty Dog...Plus, A [Remastered]
Personnel: Robin Trower (vocals, acoustic guitar, tambourine); Gary Brooker (vocals, 3-string guitar, recorder, harmonica, piano, celeste, bells, woods); Kellogs (bosun's whistle); Matthew Fisher (vocals, acoustic guitar, recorder, piano, organ, marimba); David Knights (bass); Barrie Wilson (drums, conga, tabla). Engineers: Ken Scott, Ian Stuart, Henry Lewy. Procol Harum, who reached an astounding peak with their 1967 debut, achieved further heights with each successive release up to A SALTY DOG, their third. This album mixes heartfelt singing with orchestral grandeur and an R&B-based rhythm section (B.J. Wilson is one of the great unsung drummers of the '60s and '70s). Theband easily and honestly moves from the symphonic mini-epic of the title track to the bluesy "The Milk of Human Kindness." The dual keyboards offer a regal sheen that is nicely punctuated by Robin Trower's guitar. Throughout, Gary Brooker's vocals are richly barbed and the perfect vehicle to deliver lyricist Keith Reid's literary verses. With the departure of organist Matthew Fisher, this was the last great recording by the original line-up of Procol Harum. This album is essential. SKU: 4125807

Wilco: Jeff Tweedy (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, bass); John Stirratt (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, organ, bass); Max Johnston (vocals, banjo, dobro, mandolin, fiddle); Ken Coomer (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Brian Henneman (vocals, guitar); Daniel Corrigan (vocals); Lloyd Maines (pedal steel guitar). Recorded at Easley Recording, Memphis, Tennessee. When Uncle Tupelo, the band that defined '90s alt-country, split into two camps, Jay Farrar's Son Volt took the relatively arty road while Jeff Tweedy upped the rock & roll grit quotient with Wilco. On Wilco's debut album, the band sounds righteously ragged, charging along behind Tweedy in a manner suggestive of the rootsier moments of the Stones and/or the Replacements. Theoccasional appearance of acoustic guitar, banjo or a 2/4 beat serves to remind us of Tweedy's roots. Still, A.M. has the sound of a band already well on their way to the gloriously chaotic rock & roll nirvana they would reach on the follow-up BEING THERE. SKU: 1005794
